We have just over a week of winter left. It has rained gently all week but also there are signs of Spring. My garden is flowering which seems strange when it is so dark outside!
This week I started a new pram blanket using left overs from Lily's. I got out all my wool to see what I have and what looks nice together. A friend gave me loads of cream wool in 8 ply (a while ago) and I want to make the most of this. So this was the first colour scheme to start me off.
d
As I dug and found more I discovered I have a heap of violets-purples and plums that look gorgeous together... so now I am speeding a long because I am excited about the next thing! 😊
I continued on with the #everybitcountschallenge although I need to do some posting on Instagram and catch up there. Overall it has been motivating and I have found information that I can really use. It is fantastic to have those "WHY didn't I ever think of that moments!?" Sometimes we are sitting on a gold mine and don't even know it!
At the moment my eggs are my goldmine and I got to work. First I made another round of Lemon Butter.
This was good as Lemons are my second biggest thing to use up. For Chloe I took a sponge cake, a jar of lemon butter and a container of whipped cream. I saw the boys can assemble it as last time I took it over in the car all put together and it slid like a glacier.... and looked like a ski slope. 🙄
I froze eggs and then popped them out into snap lock bags.
Because eggs are so nutritious they are so valuable. I want my Grandkids having plenty of eggs. So I combined help from Mum and Stephanie to make up brioche egg and bacon rolls. I decided to do this first as I know for sure my Grandsons will devour them.
Stephanie's tip was to do the eggs in the pie maker as then they are perfectly neat a round and nothing sticks. This worked a treat!
I think an egg on top of a muffin, crumpet, in toasted sandwiches... any of these would be good. Good for ourselves on an "I just can't cook night."
When they cooled I wrapped them in non stick paper.
Then they went into the fridge overnight.
Then into plastic bags and into the freezer.
I hope to make a slightly different variety next week.
As I was going away overnight I knew a piece of cut pumpkin should be dealt with... so I cut it up and froze it.
Also I had some capsicums and I chopped and froze those.
We had a sunny day and the troughs that were moved last week were filled with lovely compost. One more step closer to planting.
To add to this today I was given three very large metal containers. Each will hold a huge amount of soil. These are going to be added to my container garden.
They are very heavy and already have good drainage. Lucky I have a huge compost pile. I also found I have cucumbers seeds so I think these might work.
I completed the baby boy pram rug. I almost told Sparkie off for sitting on it then realised what is the point? She has been snuggled up to me the whole time I made it. 🤷
My first wool patchwork rug top is together. Now for a flannelette backing and binding.
The next one is blues and greys.
When I returned home from my trip I had a car loa of thistles and Agave's again. These are all doing my garden a lot of good. They look like instant success!
I also used the trip. (which was to go to the dentist) to go to Aldi and Coles and stock up.
The very last produce from the men in the cabin was freeze dried. I made the most of absolutely everything!
Sparkie thinks it's her duty to accompany while I am still typing.
Haha! Our work here is done. I think it was a good week mainly achieved by the keep at it and every bit counts method.
"She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." Prof 31. 27. I love all of Proverbs. It is a collection of successes in one sentence. If you have never read the Bible I think it is a good place to start as you can read three lines and be wiser just like that!
Did you find any ways to get ahead this week? I hope so. Even a few extra cans in the pantry are worth celebrating. And oh my goodness I decided I better give Chrsitmass some serious thought too and start a plan! xxx
Annabel,
ReplyDeleteWhat a full week you have had, new planters, new plants and good shopping. You have put up an amazing amount of produce, so happy you are adding to your pantries. The baby blanket is so pretty and the model is perfect, she looks so proud as if she crocheted it.
We had a slower week this week. We did have a whole house water filter added. Which showed a problem we didn't even know we had. The water pressure valve wasn't working. We had water coming in at 130psi, it is suppose to come in at 40 to 60, anything higher causes leaks in pipes and damages appliances. Needless to say we had it replaced. It will save on needing repairs later. If its not one thing, it's another. Though knowing things are in good repair is a good feeling.
We lucked into a good amount of reduced meats to add to our freezer. We stopped that that store for cream for coffee, we found ground beef marked down, pork tenderloins, burgers and breakfast sausage. We were happy finding these bargains.
We are continuing to prepare for winter up here. Soon summer will be ending and really snow can happen anytime in Fall. We still have projects on the list, though we are checking them off. We feel an urgency this year.
I am continuing to work on my library/craft room, finding items I had even forgotten about. My gift pantry has expanded with items i made and put in different areas are now all together. I even sat and put my embroidery floss on flat cardboard bobbins and into a case with dividers, I filled 3 cases, now everything is organized better in those categories. I am cleaning slowly and thoroughly. Husband was even surprised with all the donations I had lined up for us to take to thrift stores.
It's been a slow, though good week of accomplishments here. With season changing here I am also starting my deep cleaning of rooms in the house. It is good to sit back and see a room sparkle.
Prayers for all bluebirds.
Dear Rosanne, A water filter is a good thing. They put all sorts of stuff in the tap water these days.
DeleteWell done on the organising, finding things for the gift cupboard and also donating. I love finding things for the gift cupboard!
It is great you found good markdowns too! They are harder to find now. Have a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Your blankets are beautiful, Annabel! Love the color combinations for each of them! I also love that Sparkie is beside you as you make them. Makes me smile. And as always, you've been very busy! Yes, eggs are now considered a super food. Do you save and freeze the egg whites when you make lemon butter? Those breakfast sandwiches cost a lot if you buy them vs. making your own. I used to make sausage and egg biscuits (American biscuits) and freeze them for quick breakfasts when my sons were growing up.
ReplyDeleteOne of the benefits of doing something each day to ensure an abundance of food is if you get sick, there's no need to go out to a store. I've learned this well in the past month that involved an ambulance and night at the ER with CT scans done. And there's still plenty of food stored. I use see through, air tight bins in the chest freezer that have handles on them; everything is sorted by type in those bins. Being well stocked has been a huge blessing! To you and all the Bluebirds, be sure to take care of yourselves. As we get older it's easier to get run down. Just a reminder with the holidays almost around the corner... the "ber" months are busy months. Prayers for all. --Elise in the AZ mountains
Dear Elise, Thank you so much! My lemon butter is made with 10 whole eggs.
DeleteHaving emergency meals is just essential. And a pantry that will see us through anything. You are right... I am thinking about Christmas and planning and doing a few things. Once it is September it is full on I always think! Have a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
What a week! It amazes me how much handiwork you do in a week, and it is all so beautiful and practical.
ReplyDeleteI got a shock when you said only a week or so until Spring! I mean I knew what date it was but I just hadn’t thought it through. Yikes Winter went fast! I saw fruit mince pies at Coles this week 🙄
I love proverbs too. So much wisdom 🙏
That Sparky is adorable!
I must turn my thoughts to the spring garden very soon. Sooner than I realised apparently 😂
Have a lovely week Annabel and bluebirds
From Cheryl 🪺
Dear Cheryl, Yes Spring is so close now. Our climates are pretty different... I am planning but it will be a whole month before I can really think about planting anything. It would be warmer there. I could still get a frost.
DeleteIn the evening I crochet for four hours or so. It's amazing how this adds up! But if someone is here for a cup of tea or whatever I will crochet and talk. :) Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Lovely afghans, Annabel! Well done on the lemon curd. Nice that you have 2 (?) freezers stocked with egg and bacon rolls. And getting ahead on the preserving before you depart for your trip is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThose agave plants are huge! Do you plan to harvest the juices?
After returning from my vacation, I set the house right, and caught up on laundry. I had an amazing time, but it is good to be home.
I baked loaves of sandwich bread, chocolate beet muffins, and tortillas.
So nice to make tortillas again.
I'm cleaning high places in my house that sometimes get overlooked.
While I was away, Ohio had lots of rain. Sadly, I lost all my blackberries. Which was a ton! But I am thankful that my tomatoes are large. Just praying they ripen quickly. 😊
Now that the rain has stopped, I must seal my laundry room roof with roofing tar. That will be an interesting task!
I popped a lot of food into the freezer before I traveled. Now I can delve into it and make simple meals.
I continue to clear out the food in the freezer before buying new.
Have a wonderful week, Bluebirds. And thank you, Annabel for all you do!
Love, Leslie (Ohio)
Dear Leslie, At the place in Adelaide there are Agaves 10x this size if only I could bring them home! No I just have them as they look lovely and cope with tough conditions. They fill in all my spaces for free.
DeleteWell I have I have four freezers then three fridge freezers. I have a ready meals freezer, a meat freezer a fruit freezer etc so at least I know where most things are.
I hope you have help on sealing the roof! I hope the tomatoes ripen.. Vicky is also in Ohio and said hers are slow to ripen... but even if they are 3/4 ripe they will be ok. Being big is a bonus! With much love Annabel.xxx
Hi Annabel
ReplyDeleteYour various blankets are looking so good, I particularly like the greens etc of the boys blanket, clearly Sparkie likes it too! The egg and bacon muffins will be so handy and tasty for you and the family. Good convenient food, a winner!
I found a nice new T shirt for me for £3 in a charity shop and another book for me. This is a new charity shop and the prices are very reasonable.
I found deals on dark chocolate and a curry sauce we like, no preservatives , nasties etc so I stocked up.
I used overripe bananas to make a banana loaf cake.
I gave a friend cucumbers and she gave me figs and quails eggs.
I bought some lovely reconditioned wooden toys at our local agricultural show for my granddaughter. They are stored away for her birthday in October and Christmas.
The garden gave us sweetcorn cobs, aubergine, onions, tomatoes, courgettes, cucumber, potatoes, runner beans, basil and mint. I filled several vases with flowers.
I plan to freeze some more of the abundance this week, the news is full of bad weather coming this autumn and winter and as well as saving money we can stay home and eat well without having to brave floods etc. I also need to apply my preparedness brain to other areas but more of that another time! I am learning from you Annabel and other readers all the time.
Penny in the UK
Dear Penny, I love that you have a friend with quail and I love your trade! Chocolate is getting expensive so it is a good thing to stock up on.
DeleteWhat a lovely harvest you are getting!! A good variety. Yes you will be preparing for winter. I am concerned about people that need heating oil due to the high price.... and possible shortages. The more you are prepared for winter the better. Thanks for your kind words Penny! Have a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
You have been very busy and gained such good results. I really like the colour ways of your blankets. You have given me inspiration for the winter
ReplyDeleteIt’s been a week when everything didn’t go to plan.
On Saturday my daughter, my son in law and grandson were here to try to clear our garage of mostly car parts and engines . Our hobby once was hot rods and engines of all kinds but 25 years ago parkinsons came to visit us and slowly got worse.Work stopped .
It was a good thing they were here as hubby had a fall. The men both 6 foot eight of them lifted hubby up and my daughter cleaned and dressed the wounds, At eighty I couldn’t have managed it myself, it would have been an ambulance call. Most of it recycled on Trash nothing or freecycle. The rest went to the scrap yard. The garage is clear a few weeks and they will attempt to clear the heavy machinery from the work shop.
The rest of the week was uneventful thank goodness. I picked 7lb of grape , they are in the freezer ready to juice. 2lb of plums for jam.and approximately 1lb of raspberries . I am also picking french beans. The potatoes were lifted a while ago as they had died down. The beetroot is still hanging in there I will pull it soon. I also have 2 pomegranate on the bush .I think this is the worst harvest I have ever had ,We now have a hosepipe ban and haven’t had rain for more than 50 days.
I am amassing the ingredients for the mincemeat fo mince pies as the focus moves from the garden to the kitchen, with jam ,juice , mincemeat, sauerkraut and beetroot to preserve. Also Christmas pudding to make.
I really must try to contribute more often, keep safe everyone
Chris
Dear Chris, Oh I am sorry your husband fell. I am so glad you had helpers and they were there to assist. I hope some of the machinery can be sold or some collector wants things. What a great hobby you had back in those days.
DeleteYou have beautiful produce! I am hearing so much about drought and water restrictions. I know how awful that is. Drought is depressing for sure.
Very good on the dried fruit etc. I am doing that too! I want everything on hand for my fruit cakes and Christmas cooking. I hope your husband is ok. I am sorry he has Parkinsons. My Grandpa had it. So that is personal to me. I am glad you have a lovely helpful family! With much love Annabel.xxx
I love all the things you do and share to be a successful homemaker!.................Nancy
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Nancy! Have a good new week! xxx
Deletehello annabel, this week was good for you in many ways, love all your crochet projects. i have been busy embroidering a pillow top for a christmas gift and finished piecing a quilt top with gingerbread men for my middle daughter. now it's time to hunker down and start filling the canning shelves. wen to a farm market near gettysburg and got tomatoes , plums and cukes for sauce, and jam and pickles. our garden did not do very well this year, so we had to go the farm market route this year. we are very fortunate to have many farms and orchards around us. so many people are oblivious to the times we are living in and fail to have back-up plans for taking care of their families. a good site i follow is "gathering basket homestead". these ladies are full of super inspiration. enjoy ;-) bonnie in southern pa.
ReplyDeleteDear Bonnie, Well done on being on to Christmas gifts and using the local farms around you to fill your jars. It is really good you live surrounded by alternative sources too. Thank you I will be checking out Gathering Basket Homestead tonight! It sounds right up my alley! Before our eyes things are less and less per week and more expensive, a huge standoff is taking place in the Middle East, fuel is up and up but many do not see how this matters. Some countries (ie England) are warning people of coming food shortages. I know to keep going, keep putting up and keep my hands busy as that calms the mind too! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteYou’ve certainly shown how much can be achieved by simply keeping at it. I love seeing all the wool projects coming together, and the finished pram rug is beautiful.
I was happy to see the pie-maker eggs worked so well for the brioche rolls too. They look like such a handy thing to have in the freezer.
The Proverbs verse really resonated with me. Its meaning fits so closely with how I think about caring for a home - paying attention to what we have, using it well and doing the steady work that supports the household. It also made me think of Proverbs 13:11, “whoever gathers little by little makes it grow.” That seems to fit the Every Bit Counts idea so well too.
Have a lovely weekend.xox
Dear Stephanie, I dont think I will ever cook an egg another way! Proverbs absolutely is beautiful to read. All the words I love, diligence, prudence, busy hands, all the industry and wisdom. It is timeless. A wise woman builds her house... that is one I think on and a foolish woman tears down her house with her own hands. This is so true.
DeleteA little each day works for me in so many areas. The amount of crochet Im getting done has kind of had a domino effect of ideas! Thank you because you've inspired me a lot. With much love Annabel.xxx
You always amaze with how much you accomplish! Love the crocheted blankets and the patchwork quilt.
ReplyDeleteWe are heading into Fall now - it has been a very hot Summer and it is still hot by any standards but the air feels cooler and it is certainly a lot darker in the mornings already. I did a tidy up and small re-org in the pantry last weekend and it is a lot easier to see what I have and what I need. Payday is next week and I have a small list already for priorities. I always buy fresh flour, baking powder and yeast after a hot Summer but I'll wait for another couple of weeks before buying those items.
Ground beef (from Australia) was on sale this week so I picked up an extra couple of pounds and will pick up a couple more on payday. Peaches are also on sale again this week and peaches from Niagara are amazing so I am freezing some and enjoying eating the rest. I will pick up another container full on the way home from church on Sunday. Peppers (capsicums) are a good price at the moment so I plan on freezing another tray of those tomorrow. They will be much appreciated come the Winter when the prices get to be ridiculous.
The plan for this next week is to use up all the bits & pieces in my fridge/freezer to make some more room. There are a few things that need using up before freezer burn becomes an issue. Some wraps or personal pizzas (made with Naan bread) will be on the menu over the next couple of days. I do not want to waste anything these days.
Have a wonderful week everyone.
I am so happy you bought Aussie beef! It is good! You have given me an idea. I have used flat breads for pizza bases but not Naan bread. I think that would be a more pizza base like texture! I am going to try this!! Genius! xxxx
DeleteAll your blankets are lovely! And the produce continues to come in! You're making good use of it too! It's so fun to read about your adventures in homemaking! I agree that Proverbs is full of good wisdom. I read the one each day that corresponds with the day of the month. What good reading!
ReplyDeleteMy week has been full of making and cleaning. I got my kitchen decluttered and cleaned well this week. And I'm relearning how to knit. I think I may have it down, but I also know I have lots to learn still! I'm tucking meals in the freezer too as I make extra!
Many blessings to you and the Bluebirds!
Stacy in Virginia
Dear Stacy, Thank you! I hope the knitting is going well! I am 100% sure knitting is good for the brain and soothing. And productive! Well done on all your kitchen work. Also good on the freezer meals!
DeleteI had not thought of Proverbs being a verse a day for a month! Wow I will do this for September... truly think over one verse each day for the day. Yesterday (Tuesday) I had MORE produce come in. I have never had a winter like it. I wish I knew how many kilos of free food came in since that day I felt to not look over my shoulder but put my head down and work. Some mind blowing amount and great variety too! Amazing.
Many thanks! With love Annabel.xxx
Lovely pictures, Annabel, as always. This past week I canned 7 pints green beans, 5 half pints of cherry berry jam, and 7 quarts vegetable soup. I also made 2 cups of seasoned breadcrumbs and dried more basil and parsley. I will be canning more spaghetti sauce this week. I hope all the bluebirds have a wonderful week! Marley in the Mountains
ReplyDeleteDear Marley, That was a wondeful effort for the week. Great things added to your shelves. Spaghetti sauce will be fantastic too. I like the idea of seasoned breadcrumbs.... I also have Parsley to dry but Basil.. I have to wait until summer. I love both these herbs. I hope this week is going well too as we are mid way now! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel, well done on the beautiful blankets. The lemon butter looks delicious. The bacon and egg rolls are a wonderful idea. I love Sparkie on the blanket. I like your new garden, it will be able to grow a lot! I’ve been under the weather this week. So have been trying to rest when possible. Lots of love, Bridget
ReplyDeleteDear Bridge, I really hope you are feeling better and got some rest. For your boys.... I cant recommend the pie maker to cook eggs perfectly for most uses. Just amazing. Especially if your chooks are laying and I hope they are.
DeleteHave a good week, we are mid way already! With love Annabel.xxx
