Feather your Nest Friday, 24th October, 2025.
It is just me or do you think this year has gone by really fast? It is almost November! My lists have sub lists!
There is a lot to remember so I will start with today. It was a beautiful day and I took several dozen eggs into town and came home with spring onion plants, radishes, broad beans and there was also free rhubarb! The swap tables are amazing!
In the thrift store I found a whole set of Debbie Meyer green boxes. These are not common in Australia but I bought some once when I was searching for containers that keep fresh produce fresh for longer. The set I got today would be about $100 here. And produce season is around the corner. I need to give them a good wash but this is awesome! (I paid $5 for them.)
Earlier in the week I got free lemons! After making a big lot of Lemon Butter and using some up... more arrived!
This week was Toms 5th Birthday.
As usual Chloe made a beautiful cake, although most of her kitchen was ripped out. But she still had an oven...
This was a gorgeous afternoon. Lily wore her new best dress. 😊
Everyone scoffed good food and took home leftovers!
Things are going well in the garden. We had both sunshine and rain.
I got three new fruit trees to fill some spaces in the orchard. They are apricot, quince and plum.
Over the weekend it is meant to rain. This would be great!!
I finally completed another quilt block and I am into another which I absolutely love and can't wait to finish!
At least I am back on track!
Tom had his afternoon of activities while the little ones sleep.
Due to Chloe's kitchen situation we made the dinner. The first was meat balls, cherry tomatoes and chopped capsicum. (Then pasta sauce over the top.) Tom did it all and was in charge of the cheese topping hence... a lot of cheese!
I got dinner for a few nights too!
Then he made jar deserts which were the lemon butter, whipped cream, a meringue and strawberries. He chopped a lot of strawberries! I resisted urges to tidy them up as he felt like such a legend make the WHOLE meal and a special desert for each family member.
Chloe said at dinner time he was very proud to have made everything. At this point she had no sink... so this all was a big help!
I went through the present cupboard some more. I have a whole heap of these chicken kitchen towels to match up with dish cloths. They are in four chicken designs. Lucky I have a number of chicken loving friends!
Now I need to make a list of all the names with what I have and what I still need. I am not to the bottom of the present cupboard yet... but close. I made more than I thought! And the cooking hasn't started yet!
Every year fruit cakes become some of my gifts. It might be fruit cakes tied up with a kitchen towel....
So that is my week. Lots of lovely things I am grateful for.
How did you build up your nest this week? It all counts, big and small. Christmas goes so much better for me when I start early. This is why we begin in January!
Have a restful weekend, we are all working hard and need to recharge! xxxx

Dear Annabel
ReplyDeleteI had the shock of realising my lovely local bakery will start stocking fruit mince pies the week after the (Big Adelaide Christmas) pageant so that’s Christmas in the next breath ! As it’s still cool and rainy it doesn’t feel like Christmas is so close by.
The grandchildren certainly all enjoyed the birthday celebrations, and Lily looks wonderful in her best dress. The colour perfectly matches her eyes.
Enjoy the rain !
Kate
Oh, my goodness, five already! And such a precocious young man, making a whole dinner for his family! You have beautiful grandchildren, Annabel.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your encouragement and gentle reminders. I've kept a gift stash for many years. Much of it will go to a local charity this year that provides Christmas gifts for seniors who are alone. I need to come up with ideas for the men. Hmm...
Elise (in Arizona's White Mountains)
Dear Elise, it is so wonderful of you to think of older people at Christmas. That is very kind.
DeleteThat Tom is such a big helper!
ReplyDeleteYour letters are so positive and encouraging. I am working on trying to tidy up the courtyard garden for winter. The colors of the surrounding trees are so pretty in the fall. God is the best artist don't you think!........Nancy
ReplyDeleteTom's cake is amazing! I shared the pic with my husband as he's been a huge LEgo fan for some 60 years!! I love the base. Such a unique look.
ReplyDeleteAnd you can send Tom over to make us dinner and dessert anytime! He sure is getting lots of life lessons that are going to make him quite popular among the ladies!! And he really seems to enjoy everything. What a kid! All 3 of Chloe's kids are just beautiful and how special to spend time with great grandmum.
As usual, I love to hear about all you do. Love your quilt square!
Happy Birthday To Tom!
ReplyDeleteDear Annabel, what a lovely post. Full of sunshine and good things. I have had a great week too for a variety of reasons. One of my successes was in the garden. Last year I grew a celery from the celery bottom of a store bought whole celery that I literally just plonked in a vegie box. It grew into a lovely huge celery, we ate some of it and then due to my health - it went to seed. This weekend as I was showing my sister around my very untidy vegie patch I noticed lots and lots and lots of baby celeries growing all over the ground between the vegie boxes. So one day this week I took the time to weed two boxes and I planted 30 baby celeries. My daughter was visiting my parents so she took them 14 to put in their garden. There are still more that I will offer to neighbors. This time I will try to utilize them all by dehydrating any we don't eat - just like Annabel :) Love Clare
Hi Annabel
ReplyDeleteSorry I haven't commented for a while, should be back on track now after a couple of weeks struggling with a nasty cold.
Tom is such a great helper and I love his cheery face. What a gem. Love Lily's dress too and all your homemade gifts, it's inspirational.
I forget what I've posted so if I repeat myself please forgive!
Still picking tomatoes from the greenhouses, kale, leeks, carrots and lettuce and cooking apples. Flowers too.
I won yet another beautiful arrangement from floral group and a client of my husband's sent home a big bunch of dahlias for me.
Lots of cooking going on including a lamb hotpot for several meals and a big Dundee cake for my husband's birthday. I continue to buy a couple of things every week towards Christmas to spread the cost.
I have been decluttering our clothes and assessing the gaps. I found two lovely new with tags jumpers in the charity shop for me and have put all my autumn/ winter outfits together in colours on the rail so I can put things together easily. Our family gives each other suggestions for Christmas presents (small surprises are welcome too!) so we don't waste money and there are a couple of gaps ( nighties for me) which can go on my list.
My husband has been replacing a fence and gate in our garden and has secured our boundary very neatly and we haven't had to pay for labour.
Aldi and Lidl put their wooden toys on sale for Christmas and both my daughters and I, in different areas, were on the doorstep sharpish to pick up the good buys. My granddaughter received some things for her birthday together with clothing her Mum asked for and we have all got toys put aside for Christmas. Love a good buy!
Best wishes to you Annabel and all Bluebirds.

Dear Annabel, happy birthday to Tom! It looks like an amazing celebration. I love the cake, Chloe has such talent! I love Lily’s dress, it looks beautiful on her. Blue suits your Mum too. Chase has beautiful hair! I think it’s lovely Tom cooked dinner and made dessert. I feel like I have blinked and this year has gone past. Lots of love, Bridget
