Feather your Nest Friday, 27th December, 2024.

I hope you had a beautiful Christmas!  I had a bit of anxiety the days before...  unsure how I would do.  But I had so many blessings over two perfect days that I just felt very grateful.

Christmas no 1 was last Saturday at Lucy's.   Since it is a two hour trip Mum and I took containers of things we had made and assembled a desert platter when we got there.  I even took my favourite big plate!

The kids really like having the choices and selecting.  Leftovers were out back into containers for treats over the next days.

Lucy had the table looking so pretty and the kids had helped.  Sidney was very proud about it.

The roses were from the garden.

It was just a happy happy day.  Mum and I have no trouble yakking for four car hours.  😊

Then we had Christmas Day Christmas with Chloe's family.    It was another perfect day.

It was Lily's first Christmas.  Chloe made cards with the kids on the front...

For the meal I made the stuffing in rectangle individual muffin pans so they looked like bricks lol but neat to serve.  I made extra so spare meals could be plated up.

Also Nana's tomato pie.  I make this every year in honour of Nana L.   I have posted the recipe before.  As I made it though I thought mmm this could be used in other ways.   Last week I showed that I had a heap of Zucchinis.  So I fried up about six big onions then a heap of zucchini.

When this gets some caramelisation going on I add tomatoes,  pepper and oregano.

When ready to serve it looks like this...

It is covered in torn up bread and cheese and baked until golden.  I made myself a small one which I ate at home with some steak one night and left over turkey another.   But it could just be baked without the bread.....  and poured over pasta and it would be beautiful.  And it would go a long long way!

This ... is similar to this dish I also made this week.  It was apparently once a Tin Tok sensation.   You slap a piece of Feta into a dish,  surround it with any combination/amount of onion,  tomatoes, zucchini, capsicum etc and bake it.

Bake this and top it with fresh basil or oregano... and serve over spaghetti.... you can add any other cheese too...  more is more with cheese!   I made this because I have a lot of cherry tomatoes and this uses them up a big lot at a time.

Back to Christmas!

Chloe provided foil trays and everyone took home dinner.  This was so nice.  It was another beautiful meal.

Mum always makes the pudding.   Tom declared this was the best one ever! (forever is 4 years for him lol)

But I agree it was!

It was a beautiful day.  Over both days everyone was very happy and the kids were all so excited and sparkly.  Just joy.

Mum gave me the gift of a heap of baskets to go on top of my pantry cupboards in "the shop."

They fit just perfect and imagine what I can store in these!

The rest of the zucchini I processed and froze.  Some is still in the fridge to make pasta sauce in a few days time.   But all these were frozen...

I am getting plenty of eggs...

I made a trade.  This might not look like a thing of beauty BUT to me it is!

These are huge.  They were troughs.   But to me they are garden beds!  I traded the use of my cabin for ten days for several of these.  haha this is a different trade!  It is a tractor job to move them.  AND I have plenty of compost to fill them immediately!   I am so excited!

Yesterday I left the cows come into the driveway to graze.  This is quite a big area which includes up around the chook yard and hay shed where there is quite a bit of grass, even some green grass.    In a few days it will be all mowed and a better firebreak and the cows think it's great.

At the same time Justice turned 8 weeks old and I began to wean her to one bottle a day.  She wasn't too happy but she was talking to the cows who were right next to her yard now.  This morning she was not waiting for her bottle in her normal spot.   I got there and no sign of her.  So I called out loudly... then louder "Justice where the heck are you?"   Then I heard a moo in the distance.  Yep, she had escaped to go hang out with the rest of the gang.  But I called again and she came galloping up the driveway to meet me at the gate.  She drank her bottle then turned around and galloped back to the cows.  Well,  fine.   So I hope she hears me again tomorrow morning or is waiting.  😊

See how she looks good, after she was so little and frail now she is full on and breaking out of the paddock!

I was given cherries and lemons.

My last lot of chicks are now point of lay.  I moved the hens into the hen house and I got seven hens and two roosters.  That is amazing and they are lovely!  My year of building up my hens has resulted in a great variety and different coloured eggs... and some young ones that are not quite laying yet. I should be set for several years.

Today I went into town.   I picked up all next years wrapping paper for 75c and quite a few deals.  The best was I bought three frozen turkeys!   For me this is the best price in years... which is $4 a kilo.   That is about half what I think is a good price.  So roast turkey dinners in winter will be beautiful especially as the kids love it,  they all love a roast.   I can plate up so many meals from each one.   My head was in the freezer rearranging things to get everything I found safely stored.  So it was worth the trip and a good day!

I really hope your were blessed this Christmas.
This is the last post for 2024 and I have big plans for the new year.   Different times call for different actions.  I think I will post new years day to get the ball rolling.  But for now I am thinking over the year and making some decisions for the next.

How did you celebrate, build up your home or pantry or garden this week?  We love to hear!xxx

  1. I am glad you had a nice time with your family Annabel. I am in "reflection and planning mode" right now, and I know you will understand what I mean by that. I don't want to "float down the stream this year" (which is my default setting, because I'm basically lazy) I want to be...I need to be...intentional next year...I've had a feeling for some months that something big is going to happen in 2025. I don't know if it's good or bad...or if it's my personal circumstances or a world event...but as sure as I know the sun will rise in the morning something is coming...a change...and I need to get (and keep) my ducks in order. On that note I look forward to your posts each and every week. They keep me on track and motivated! Take care dear Annabel xxx From Cheryl

    1. Dear Cheryl, We have a few days to enjoy reflecting and planning but I write down the plan.and begin Jan 1. As it has turned out one of my first projects will be getting these cement tanks into position, filled and planted because we still have enough summer to actually end up with crops from them! But I have the feeling as Ive continued to have. I think we are going to see a nuclear event personally. Yes I think a big event and change is coming. Over the weekend the communication and power lines were cut again this time cutting off Estonia and I think Lithuania? The mainstream news says nothing. Anyway the gist is this isn't looking good. So maybe if I share my plan we can work together. Also I will start to make things for my 2025 present cupboard as well of course! Have a very Happy New Year and break! With love Annabel.xxx

  2. Dear Annabel

I’m very glad you had two lovely Christmases when your expectations were elsewhere. The wonder of six excited grandchildren is a force of nature.

Well done with cooking and processing your harvests of tomatoes and zucchinis. Could be a long season with another 3 months at least! 😉

Your Mother is looking very fit, your extra meals and company are a big blessing to her.

Lovely to see sweet Justice looking for her own tribe, you probably really don’t want a fully grown cow sleeping outside the back door.
    Love
    Kate

  3. Annabel, and Dear Bluebirds, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Annabel, your Christmases both look so lovely, the children all had to be so excited. It had to be so much fun watching their excitement. They are all growing so much. I love seeing how happy they all look.
Justice, I believe is going to be a handful, it is good that she is making friends with the other cows. Your new planters are great, what a wonderful way to add to your garden, kudos to your wise trade. I love the baskets your Mum found for you.

We had a wonderful Christmas and it was so much fun seeing all be excited over the gifts we purchased, all were necessities ad it was great seeing how they were accepted. The girls even told my son it was their best Christmas. We purchased all new bed pillows, coffee. Son received sneakers, girls received sweaters, ear muffs and other things.

We were truly blessed with a wonderful ham meal and all were able to take leftovers home.
Waiting for the New Year and praying for all to be blessed.

Thank you for posting during this busy time. Everything is just so lovely! I have baked 3 batches of fruitcakes, using your recipe. This is my fourth year, and I think I’ve finally perfected the process. The cakes are so good and everyone I’ve gifted has just raved and raved. Thank you! I have learned so much from you. I’m always saying, “Oh, I learned that from my friend in Australia.” Have a wonderful New Year! Blessings from the Midwest, USA.

  7. What a lovely holiday you had! Your mum's outfit is so darling, I just love her dress and her necklace. Very classy. We had a good, simple Christmas. Many of our gifts to each other (our two grown girls and one son-in-law) were thrifted and hand-picked so it made them extra special. We had an easy potluck brunch, opened gifts and then husband and I went back home and took a nap. I have been canceling renewals before year end. These are ones I had thought were "necessary" and now realized I can live just as easily without them. We've switched our dogs to a less expensive but better (per the vet) dog food so that's helping the budget. I'd like to see how I can add some meat sales items to my tiny freezer space and still have room for other things. It's a challenge. But that's my goal for right now.

    1. Dear Sonia, It is wonderful your Mum is so fit and well! Your Christmas meal sounds beautiful! And to get a turkey breast roll for $10 now you are set for more beautiful meals. No the eggs look different but all taste the same. At least like... I feel farm fresh eggs taste different to many supermarket eggs but this has improved as many chicken farms now have the chickens get some greens and run around. Happy New Year Sonia! With much love Annabel.xxx

  9. I'm so glad you navigated the holidays successfully Annabel, your anxiety was completely understandable. The photos of your families together is so precious. A take home dinner in a foil tray must have been a boon.
We have had a wonderful time with our family and first grand child, what a joy. Our village Carol Service is always lovely, this year the three kings bought gold, Frankenstein and myrrh ( one of the children muddled their words) which made the congregation chuckle.
I love the leftovers , you don't have to think about what to cook for several days and I will freeze some meat too. We were given a beautiful ' tower' of four different cheeses so I will freeze some too and we can enjoy it in the New Year.
We gratefully received thoughtful gifts, I love practical things like cosy socks, warm bobble hats, pretty scarves, a new wash bag etc. We have been blessed in so many ways.
I too have plans for 2025 and I look forward to hearing yours Annabel.
I also look forward to sharing gifting and nesting ideas from Bluebirds around the world.

I can't wait to see what the new year brings for everyone.

    1. Thanks Vicky! This is actually a young man from America who has saved up to come stay with neighbours and experience Australia but they are short on space. I can hear Justice mooing so she has come back to the gate! Yay!xxx

  11. I haven't been in a store since end of Thanksgiving...So I guess that is my big savings! I wanted to take time off for the holidays and have done so by using up some of the older entrees I'd made earlier in the year and froze.
For Christmas gifts, I gave food items. My son in law got a favorite casserole dish I make along with the recipe. My son got a pan of stuffing/dressing and my daughter in law and daughter got carrot cake with their grandmother's secret frosting on top. And everyone got a box of homemade cookies. These gifts went over well with the adults. The children were less than impressed, lol, so next year I shall have something they can unwrap.
We had a lovely restful holiday watching old holiday films and enjoying our favorite holiday foods and cookies. The tree remained as simple as it was from the outset since I could never find the right tree topper for it.
All in all it was one of the best holidays we've had in ages. Everyone is healthy, happy and settled. That alone is everything!
Merry Christmas and may your New Year be a lovely lovely year!
