Feather your Nest Friday, 20th December, 2024.

It has been a week of getting ready for Christmas! There is a lot of joy in catching up with people and giving.  Also I think thanking people who were helpful and supportive through the year (and that includes so many of you) is lovely.  Life can fly by but when we stop and think about our Christmas list and all we have to be grateful for we realise there are people who need to be thanked.

I am going to have to not overthink this post so I will keep this bit short... but Andy and Dad both absolutely LOVED Christmas.  Andy said last Christmas was "the best Christmas ever."  I am so glad it was.  All December I felt the same thing which was to appreciate everything and every moment.  To make the most of it all.  And I did.

A lot of us have had losses, health problems and a hard year.  We need Christmas more than ever though, not less.  So I hope we all have some of those truly special - remember forever - moments.  The best way to do this is to appreciate what Christmas is really about, the gift we have been given,  and to be the miracle someone is praying for.

I have really noticed that even the smallest kindness has a big impact.   Thanks to the present cupboard and working away on little gifts all year I love to be able to give something to someone who doesn't expect it!  I think people are amazed someone even thought of them honestly.

I made my annual Coconut Ice.   Most were wrapped with pink ribbon and rosebuds but a few were tied up with string for the men.  Some went into gift hampers.

Some has been saved to go onto a desert platter I am making up tomorrow.

Also I made shortbread.

This tin is traveling with me tomorrow.  It is our Christmas with Lucy and her family!

The plain square ones were for a man and they went into a tin I saved from last year.

I had a heap of really big and very ripe lemons.  I made lemon cordial... this keeps eight weeks in the fridge.  This is for family so I didn't even soak off the labels!   Everyone saves me bottles and jars which is so helpful!  It is really delicious.  I used 22 big lemons.

Reading one of my favourite blogs it hit me how a picture truly does say a thousand words.   If you would like to see what I mean see this post Jennifer of Elephantz  The picture was her shelves full of jars with fabric covers.  That photo just said  "I love my home.  I am one happy and contented woman" to me.   It hit me as so beautiful.   All my Proverbs Women images came to mind.  So I thought I must realise a photo of something homely can be very heartwarming and inspiring.

I decided to email Jennifer to tell her my thoughts.  In the longe room I already had a parcel from her waiting for Christmas.   She replied to me to open the parcel!

In the parcel there were four of the jar covers!  haha!  She thought to make me some BEFORE I saw them!  That is the same as being gifted something before you knew you wanted it!  😊

The garden is producing!  I have my baby pumpkins.  I love them so much.

Despite some hot days and having to throw a wet towel over them my cucumbers are looking good!

I have been picking cucumbers then someone also gave me some!

I am making Nanas tomato, onion and zucchini pie as always for Christmas Day.  Actually a couple.  This will use a few.  Then I think Zucchini slice and I will process some to freeze and freeze dry.

Sonja reminded me about zoodles.... instead of noodles... so I will be using them this way too!

Tom did almost all the work on this cake.  He was so proud.  He added the "snow" on top.

I have my new 2025 planner and even two new pens to write in it.  Thinking over the year and making plans for the new year is one of my favourite things.

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas.  What have you been doing this week?  Did making things during the year help you be ready?  And what have you been baking or preserving?   Food gifts seem to be a massive hit.  When you see the price of things in the shops you can figure out why!

Thank you all for being with me all year.xxx

  2. Annabel, yes there's so much you can do with zucchini ! I also forgot once I posted you I've seen people hull out the middle and make "boats" stuff with tuna and rice, or rice or whatever meat you desire , and sprinkle with cheese and bake. You could also make zucchini crisps of you dried them ! Zoodles are awesome if you're watching weight like me with your delicious meat sauce ! So full of goodness for kids ! Even us adults, we all could do with more veggies ! Fritters are lovely too with some fetta cheese like a pikelet almost a savoury treat for grand kids or workers. Your coconut slice looks lovely. You have many beautiful memories of Andy and your dad. You were lucky to have such awesome men in your life. Many people never have that ! I know your Christmas table will be just beautiful as you are ! Much love , Sonia in Sydney

  3. Buying presents is very minimal in our family. I've been baking cinnamon rolls and gifting them away. People are always so surprised, appreciative and thankful for them. It brings me joy to see how pleased they are. Gifts don't have to be expensive. Happy Christmas!

  4. Hi Annabel
The coconut ice looks so good! It's beautifully wrapped too. I like to save tins to reuse and the one you used for shortbread is beautiful.
I hope you have a lovely Christmas celebration with Lucy and her family.
A daughter came home for a few days leave and she will be back at Christmas. Her help was wonderful, we decorated the tree and house together, finished some shopping and met my other daughter and grand daughter for a lovely festive look around a Christmas display and then lunch. She even made a batch of gingerbread men for my husband and I, he was very happy!
I made two big pans of soup this week, carrot and tomato and butternut squash., using up tomatoes preserved from the summer. Also baked more mince pies.
I have made fabric gift bags over the years and spent a nice afternoon putting all the gifts in bags and writing the homemade labels. This afternoon I went out foraging for teasels, holly and ivy and I have put a little glue on the teasel heads and sprinkled a little gold glitter on them.
Tomorrow I help decorate our church ready for the Carol service on Sunday and greenery left over will be made into a wreath for our door.
The guest beds are made up, a quick dust around and they will be ready.
I hope you have a lovely time with family and friends and Happy Christmas to all Bluebirds who celebrate it.
    Big hugs.

  5. Merry Christmas,
I hope you have a great season. Enjoy your visit with Lucy and family.
I always look so forward to your posts and the motivation I receive.
I am so thankful I put up so many freezer, canned and gifts in the cupboard. This past week was totally dedicated to being an Elf and Christmas shopping for our village…children in need…..21 children /6 families will receive 2-3 toys, a set of clothes, a jacket, a family game with food goods to make a Turkey dinner …..limited choices at the local town but managed with all now wrapped, packaged into large sacks for each family. Plus a day at the food pantry. We are delivering local gifts to neighbors, and sending out a few cards today. Hoping to slow down a bit , it is a wonderful season

  6. Merry Christmas Annabel! I love the pictures of your coconut ice. I don’t know if you remember, but one year I tried to make it. Despite you very clearly saying the consistency should be like play dough, I made it far too runny and it ended up being like a coconut ice dip 😂 It was still delicious, but certainly lacking in presentation!!

We travelled for an early Christmas last weekend. It was nice, we caught up with lots of people. Very nice to come home before the mad rush as well. It’s just us for Christmas Day, so it will be relaxed. My theory is to just make our favourite things to eat, whether they’re festive foods or not.

I hope everyone has a lovely Christmas, so many have had a challenging year. I hope you feel peace and joy through the holiday season.

    1. Dear Jen, It is probably a good thing being off the roads and being done with the catch up with everyone but it sounds very nice! It just occurred to me that coconut ice could be rolled into balls and rolled in coconut for a completely different look. Mine went rock hard in the fridge and to cut it I had to leave it out for a little while. If you ever make it again just go for a bit firmer and plenty of refrigerator time.
I hope you have a very happy Christmas! I know the meal on your table will be delicious! With love Annabel.xxx

  9. Merry Christmas Annabel to you and all your family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting on your blog every week. You are so inspiring to me. Your posts motivate me to do better and to be better, even though I am very much still a work in progress. Each week I look forward to hearing about your achievements in the home and garden, and it really does motivate me! That is your gift to us 🙏

I feel a little funny about Christmas this year, it doesn’t feel quite the same having no children at school, but it also feels slower and calmer and that is good! Also I’m not going overboard with anything this year. No excess of presents or food. I’m keeping it small and simple. Perhaps Cath has had an influence it really is just one day in the year, albeit a very special one 😊

To all the bluebirds whose comments I often read. I feel like I “know” you too. May you all have a very happy and blessed Christmas 🪺🐦

  13. Your presentations skills are amazing, Annabel. And I think your planner's cover is absolutely perfect for you! Isn't starting out a new planner the best?

I've been hard at my Christmas baking list, including butter, mincemeat, and cranberry streusel tarts, making and applying marzipan to the tops of our fruitcakes, making a batch of citron melon preserves, Nanaimo bars (a Canadian must), and both smoked and spicy Asian almonds for gifts (and snacking around the games table next week). It's getting closer! This year has been strange and I have not been prepared enough for presents, so I hope to rectify that situation next year!

We had a mail strike here for about a month, and many people were saying that this year a lot of Christmas cards from friends that live within driving distance were being delivered by hand, which meant a nice visit and "chin wag"...and comments about how much they were enjoying people just stopping by and having a visit...something that is so rare these days. That's a wonderful way to spread Christmas to those are that are close enough! It's strange to think how starved so many of us are for even a "chat over the fence" with a neighbor in these days. That said, I am grateful for this online space with like-minded friends! Merry, merry Christmas to you and your family, Annabel, and to all Bluebirders around the globe!

    1. Dear Jen, Your kitchen sounds like it has been a hive of activity! All sounds beautiful. I heard a lot about the strike and that it lasted so long a lot of people found new ways which probably did the postal service no favours. I know other years you did a lot of knitting, sewing and embroidery for gifts. I am starting next week on re filling my cupboard which is now very depleted! I too love that we can use the internet for good! The places we can have friends is amazing! Thanks so much Jen, with love Annabel.xxx

  15. Merry Christmas dear! I hope you enjoy every single bit of the Christmas holidays ahead.
I have been busy this week. I've been just longing to give a gift to someone. My children will be getting their favorite Christmas cookie and Carrot Cake. One child mentioned at Thanksgiving that he wasn't making stuffing/dressing as he is the only one who likes it. A daughter wanted a Carrot Cake at Thanksgiving but I was too busy to make one and told her I'd make it at Christmas. The son-in-law has been asking me to give him a recipe I made when daughter was postpartum. So I'm making him a casserole with the recipe attached.
I've promised myself that next year I shall make every effort to buy something for the grands for Christmas every month as I see things on sale and have folks in mind. Right now there are loads of things on deep sale as clearance for the holiday already.

  18. The holly's up, the house is all bright.
The tree is ready, the candles alight.
    –Carl August Peter Cornelius (1824–74)

From The Daily Almanac, resonates with me very much. Our Christmas tree is up and the most beautiful ever (although I say that every year) and the house smells wonderful of natural green fir tree. I have a wonderful Christmas feeling already, and I feel gratitude for that - I can enjoy a peaceful loving holiday, with little joys.

One of them was on Saturday evening when my husband and I went to a classical music concert. We were happy, listening to all the clasics, Straus, Bizzet, carols, etc. On our wedding 26 years ago we were waltzing on Strauss*s Blue Danube!

Thank you, Annabel, for all you do here on blogland, all your posts bring me joy, knowledge and motivation, and thanks to all Bluebirds - I feel we are all friends - sending my warmest thoughts for Christmas and may the New Year bring to you all Hope, Peace, Health and Harmony!
