Feather your Nest Friday, 29th November, 2024.

It is almost DECEMBER.   Goodness.  It has been go, go,  go here.  I did however absorb some of your kind comments and tips on how to conserve energy.   I have worked into my day some sit down and take a break, cup of tea and some crochet even.

I kept working on the cotton wash cloths.  The you tube channel I follow is called Creative Grandma.   I have tried out three of her wash cloth patterns so far because you don't have to read a pattern you just follow along.   They are very fun and uplifting to make!  And using all my odds and ends that I have kept over the years.  I will never stop saying how being busy with your hands helps have a happy heart!

Overall I do better if I can just stay home and get my work done.   But when I go to town I try and have a good list so I don't need to go back for at least a week.   Over the weekend I travelled to see Harper in her first ever dance concert.   So on the way home I did my errands and shopping,  picked up seedlings and so much more!  (Aldi, Bunnings, Kmart, Woodland and Woolworths.)  But the highlight was time with my daughters family and seeing Harper out the front on the stage performing because she was the most shy child I could not even imagine her ever going to school!
Mum also understood this and she suggested we get her flowers for after the performance (ballerina style) and she loved it and understood it was a way of saying congratulations!

Here we are in the carpark,  after her costumes were taken off.   It was a really happy day and Scarlett and Sidney were so excited and loved every moment of the concert.

Of course while I was gone I needed a baby sitter (calf sitter) for Justice.   Andrew and Tim each took a shift.  Justice couldn't care less who gives her the bottle as long as she gets it.   Andrew brought his Grandson and they checked out the cows,  fed Justice,  had a ride on the flying fox and a ride on the tractor.  His beautiful little Grandson thought this was all pretty good!

It was a week of progress and we had rain.  The first actual decent rain of the year.  We had an inch then a little more the next day.   This is for us just fantastic.   I had already planted the seedlings I got in town and everything just looked wonderful.   Family and friends were all comparing how much rain we got as it was so exciting.

My zucchinis and pumpkins (and everything else too) looked so happy and everything grew visibly over several days.

I picked my first zucchini as I wanted to add it to my spaghetti sauce.  I had planned to make a big pot of sauce and see how many Lasagnes I could make.

This looks dramatic but once it is all cooked down you don't know it's there.   The answer to how many Lasagnes I could get was six!

One,  a medium one that would serve four,  has been given to Andrew.   It was a trade.  My goats always knock over their water.  I was saying if only we had another bath tub that we could turn into a trough.  Andrew said he had one!  When I asked how much did he want for it he said nothing.  So I said how about a Lasagne?

Ta dah!  Now try as they might they cannot knock over the water and it fills itself up!   What a deal.  😊

The goats, as most of you know, live on an old tennis court.  It used to be fashionable for farmhouses to have a tennis court as Chloe's house as one too. She has geese, ducks and chooks in hers.   I thought about calling my goats names like Andre and Roger.   When the girls were little they told their teacher about Nanas goats.  Apparently the teacher asked where do the goats live?  And the reply was "the tennis court" which I thought was very funny and the teacher probably was wondering what the heck!

So Justice... I didn't think she was eating enough grass and she was sitting in her little house too much.  She should be grazing.  So... my helpers made a makeshift fence around my pumpkin and zucchini patch and I took her into the orchard.  This is a bigger area with a lot more grass.  She likes it.

In Autumn I had the first experience of not having enough grass in the paddocks for my cows.  Most people in the state (and wider)  had the same problem.  Every hay bale sold out.  I decided this year as soon as farmers were cutting hay I would buy some.   It felt like an enormous commitment but also an insurance policy.   And so the hay arrived.

I was actually ridiculously excited!

Some is in dry storage so that if it is not needed it will be there the next year.  Some (which will be used first)  has been put to work as a windbreak in the orchard around my veggie patch.

On a windy hot day this protection will be so good!

It is a Great Wall of hay.  I am so happy with this!

My blue egg laying chicken put in an extra effort and laid the bluest egg ever.   The egg on the left is the normal blue... suddenly we have wear your sunglasses blue.  😎

An absolute prize winner!

I worked on Christmas mail and wrapping.  My present cupboard has just been the best ever.  Even when I think I forgot someone I can come up with gifts.

Finally...

I packaged up Parsley seed I saved.  These grow so well.  I am all about gifts that fit in a regular card and envelope too.  So now I have started a new collection.

I am trying to transform my dining room table from a wrapping station to a nice Christmas setting.   The first of December has always been my day to decorate.  I am not buying anything just bringing out the pretty and sparkly things.

I would love to hear how you built up your nest this week.   I did not get much done on my "shop/pantry" but if I can have success with the summer garden this will be an enormous advantage.  Also... the pouring rain did not damage the fruit trees at all.  All the fruit looks beautiful and growing.  I actually think that netting the fruit trees also somewhat protects them from wind.   They are kind of contained.  Well I am hopeful!

Have a great weekend... and conserve some energy.xxx

  1. Dear Annabel,

I’m so glad to hear you had some decent rain, it’s so precious!

I think it’s very wise to get a truck load of hay, but then I would expect nothing less from you! To be prepared for all scenarios is your mantra, and it it is wise beyond measure. That is probably the greatest thing you have taught me 🙏

Your big blue egg is absolutely beautiful 🪺 ☺️

I harvested jalapeños from my garden this week and made a few jars of cowboy Candy. We have quite a bit of cowboy Candy in the cupboard at the moment, so I think I’ll give this batch as Christmas gifts.

I said last week I was going to let my Bazil go to seed, but I couldn’t help myself, and I harvested some more and made another batch of pesto for the freezer, it’s just so hard not to use it up LOL

I did a bit more Christmas shopping. I really loathe shopping, so small and often is the only way I can deal with it all! I get there eventually!

Finally I did a really deep clean of our lounge room in preparation for Christmas. I enlisted my grown up boys to help me! We moved lounges from the walls and cleaned skirting boards and air conditioner filters, it was quick with the help I had and it looks, feels and smells so much better LOL

    Have a lovely week bluebirds!

    Love from Cheryl 💜

    1. Dear Cheryl, Thank you for your very kind words. It felt daunting to get the hay but once it was coming I was so excited.
I think the Pesto is a good idea. It keeps so well frozen and it so good. Store bought is nothing the same.
I am over the shops and buy just about everything online. Mind you when it is quiet I will browse a shop for ideas and to check what they are charging for things etc. But people lose their minds when it is busy and I dont really enjoy it!
Nice work on the deep clean. I love how fresh things feel with even a bit of a move around. The jars of Cowboy candy would be good gifts. Also the Pesto. You had a really good week! With love Annabel.xxx

  4. Annabel, what a full week you have had. It is such a great view seeing how well Justice is doing. The garden looks amazing.
I know Harper had to be so happy seeing you in the audience and the flowers you purchased for her are beautiful. I am so happy you were able to attend the performance.

Here we had a week of prepping for Thanksgiving, as we are having 2 meals, one on Thanksgiving and one on Sunday as a few had to work. I had used up some old apples to make an apple crisp, so on Thanksgiving we only had pumpkin pie and I will bake an apple pie for Sunday's dinner. I used up some leftover corn making corn muffins. So I was a bit in the use it up mode. I was also able to crochet edging around a few squares which in itself made me feel accomplished. I had crocheted a kitchen set for a friend and got that mailed off. Finished off all my Christmas cards and sent them off. So I feel a bit ahead of the game.
This week will be Christmas decorating. I have 3 trees to put up, husband will put the one on the front porch and the decorations out there. I need to set up the one in sun room and husband will help with the one in family room. I asked for another tree to go on the landing on second floor, I want to be able to hang my family ornament on it, but seeing the price of trees, we decided to wait till after Christmas for a good sale.

The year is coming to a close soon and it is our busy month with our 30th anniversary, husband's birthday and Christmas 2 times over. It is a month full of joy.

    1. Dear Rosanne, Your thanksgiving plans and menu sound so good. Having two celebrations is even better. As you know I love the left overs and would cook all day to have several days of leftovers! I love turkey and it is really a once a year thing here.
I cannot imagine having three trees! I do love them but I have never seen anyone have multiple trees here. The Church had a beautiful tree fully decorated on Sunday and it was glorious. Putting up and taking down a tree is a big job! You have a busy month coming up. I love Advent it is the most beautiful time of year! With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Dear Annabel,

First of all, Congratulation for Sweet Harper! She is a beautiful little Star!

I repeat myself, I know, but I have to say - Your World is Beautiful.
I loved all the pictures, Justice, your plans, your plants, and the bluest blue egg.
    You did accomplish a lot!

My week was an extremely busy one at work, especially Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Luckily at home I am always protected, and Tuesday is the day when my son provides the dinner, so it was a nice meal and brought me so much joy.

It is still cold, dark and wet weather wise but the saddest part is the social turbulences in the society. We have three weeks of elections this nov-december. Last Sunday we had elections for the president and, BIG surprise, a nazy proRussian person that noboy heard about came out in first position. It is the result of Russia *s intervention on social media, some of the priests from different Churches and the naivity of some that believe many nice words without questioning. Every evening since then, students, young people all over the country, journalist, teachers are out in the streets protesting for hours. The last time that this happened was 35 years ago, in December 1989, when Ceausescu was taken down after shootings and killing people on the streets. Most of the people I know are shocked, the newspapers from Europe / United States were writing about and now we have a decision to recount all the votes, which could get worse.

My biggest fear is the war and the limitations, dark and hunger we had before. Women had almost no rigths and you could not say anything against them without facing jail time without trials, children were thrown out of universities if the parents, uncles or bigger brothers were put in jail or if they succed to run in another country. It was FEAR all over.

For the next two weeks I will be walking on ants, no sleep without nightmares.

To balance this I enjoy time with my son and husband, play with the dogs and talk to the chickens and ducks (they are so happy greeting me in the morning).

Kindness can be a good strategy too, and so I finished a present for a baby girl (my coleague at work will be a Granny in December). I loved that it made me feel good. (Pictures on Instagram) .

Sending love from very far away. Laura_s_world from Romania

PS. Penny in UK, thank you for thinking of me. Hope the joy of holidays and maybe, some sun light, will come very soon for us, in northern emisphere.

    2. Dear Laura, I saw the beautiful gift for the baby! Just lovely. Your friend at work would be so thrilled.
Your observations and comparisons to the past are deeply worrying. What you have already lived though is hard to even imagine. I can only think that being highly aware and knowing when to just stay put and not go on the streets at all if possible.... and avoid danger to the best you can. I will also search for updates as our news would tell us nothing but if I search Romania news I will get some info I hope. On a wider level I am watching Europe and world events and it is all escalation.
Your son cooking dinner once a week is a lovely thing! I hope you can get some rest this weekend. I dont know if that is possible but I hope and to enjoy the lovely things at home and in the garden. I am praying for your families safety! With much love Annabel.xxx

    1. Dear Nancy, Thank you so much! It maybe your weather or season but I leave a bit of parsley alone for the seeds and it looks like it is dying off.... but you just leave it and seed heads appear. They will be so heavy with seeds it is amazing! Once they are brown I pick them and let them dry a bit longer before packaging. You get thousands! I dont know if that will help! 7. My husband passed peacefully on Nov. 26 and I was with him. He had been asleep since Friday but I think he knew I was there. This was 29 days after being diagnosed with cancer, so we had time to say good-bye and he did not linger. A true blessing, altho ugh it's hard to feel there are any blessings to it right now. (Well, there are, but it doesn't feel that way).

I didn't mean to hijack the thread last week and I don't mean to do it now. No need to comment. I know how the Bluebirds take care of each other in thoughts and prayer and that is enough for me right now. Thank you to all.

  8. Well done Harper! We did the flower bit when my niece had her first skating exhibition and she was thrilled - it makes it extra special for them.

That egg is amazing! And Justice is making wonderful progress!

You are battling heat and a lack of rain while we are awaiting the first snowfall of Winter. There is a 40% chance of snow over the weekend here in Toronto but it shouldn't be much. Toronto is on the north shore of Lake Ontario and it helps to protect us - but as winds go over the lake they pick up moisture, hit the southern shore which is the US (Buffalo) and then dumps all that moisture - which is now snow - on them. The US news from the Northeast has been on all afternoon as they are expecting 3 to 5 feet!!!! They are used to it however, and so far not even a big football game has been postponed - they are diehard fans in Buffalo!

I am writing my first Christmas cards this evening - Canada Post is on strike so cards will need to be handed out this year and online cards sent to those I won't see in person. After church on Sunday I will start to decorate my little tree and get the other few things out. I won't put them on display until later in the week as I intend doing a deep clean before a lot of company on the 7th. I also need to get my two types of vanilla essence into the gift bottles as I will be starting to give them to friends.

I stopped by IKEA this morning as I needed some more plates and cutlery - forgot about it being Black Friday but it was amazingly quiet so I was in and out in no time with just what I wanted - no extras!

Hope some more rain heads your way this week!

I just love your post this week. So many lovely and good things to appreciate. Harper is getting so big! Congratulations to her on her dance performance. I bet she loved you were there and the flowers are lovely.
Justice is adorable! Haha your feeding a calf and I'm feeding a possum. It doesn't bother my chickens and they eat ticks and things too. I can't help but feel sorry for it when I seen it eating cold, wet scraps of chicken food. It's not the same one as before though.
The blue egg is amazing! I have blue layers, but haven't gotten one that color of blue wow!
It's cold here now with snow, but luckily we got the winter rye in and the garlic planted already because we figured winter would be different this year. I've been working on pot holders and hot pads for gifts and when I get a few done I'll switch to matching tea towels.
I too live by the motto happy hands, happy heart. And am also learning to take breaks that just go go go all the time isn't always good.
I had a bin in the pantry that I kept forgetting to go through but knew it contained pantry items. Well! I thought I had used the last of my stored rice this year canning hot rice, but the bin had about 40 pounds of rice in it so now I can take rice back off my stock up list. I haven't bought rice in about 10 years truthfully.
We had Thanksgiving and it was nice. Quiet, but nice. Nothing will go to waste. I like that I won't have to cook for a few days. Haha I'm a piggy around this time of year. Stuffing, cake, cookies not healthy, but my big butt will appreciate it haha.
Anyway I hope you and all bluebirds have a fantastic week.
    XOXO

  10. Happy December Annabel and everyone!

I just love the picture of Harper! It sounds like a beautiful concert and that was such a great idea to give her flowers - very grown up and special!

We had a bit of a crazy week with lots of us getting sick early on, but finishing with a birthday which was lots of fun. And washing. So much washing lol.

I checked out the celebration cakes at the supermarket the other day and the cheapest was $50. A basic cake, decorated with icing and sprinkles. It definitely looked nice, and I’m sure it tasted good too. But it was a great reminder to me of how much home baking saves, whether it’s a birthday cake or just fill the tins baking. It put me in the mood to do some Christmas baking!

I hope everyone enjoys the lead up to Christmas, I just love the weeks before! I’ll probably come up with loads of new recipes to try, things to make etc and then end up making the old faithfuls anyway lol. I’ll enjoy the process anyway!!

    1. Dear Jen, I am glad you are all better. Baking saves a fortune. The one bargain we can get is giant slabs of plain sponge cake. They can be inexpensive and then we decorate them. But as for decorated/layered cakes, muffins etc and things like pies, pasties and sausage rolls oh my goodness they are expensive now.
Everyone appreciates foodie gifts. Even there you have to watch the price of ingredients. My friend does caramel popcorn and it is so good but is so cheap to make! Biscuits are pretty good. Also once its school holidays your older ones are probably keen to make things so put them to work lol
As we count down to Christmas I need to make these decisions myself! With love Annabel.xxx

Mostly I buy sets of 100 then I re package them to sets of ten as gifts. But also I package seeds as gifts as well as pictured. Either are good gardener gifts. Temu also have them and an amazing choice of sweet little envelopes and packets. xxx

  12. So happy to hear about the dance recital. How special she must have felt receiving the flowers! My first thought at seeing the blue egg was how beautiful it would be for use in Easter decorations. Have you tried piercing the ends and blowing out the yolk and white, then drying it for preservation? My grandmother used to color some uncooked eggs around Easter and then blow out the insides, thread them with a thin ribbon or embroidery yarn and then hang them on some of the bushes outside of their front door.
