Feather your Nest Friday, 15th November, 2024.

It has been a big week.   I left off last week with a new calf,  number thirteen and an orphan.  She was frighteningly skinny.   Now and then she would drink but mostly not.  That left two choices,  let her refuse and die or force feed her.   There was no time to let her come around to the idea.  So you already know what I did.  I spent hours coaxing her and forcing milk into her.  It was calf wrangling.  My back has been so sore to sleep I've taken pain killers.  But FINALLY on day six she drank more or less with no wrestling.  On day seven she just drank the whole bottle up morning and night!  And was wagging her tail.  On day eight she walked over to me to start drinking... and as of yesterday now she is waiting at the gate wondering how much longer can I possibly be!?   She is still thin but not ghostly as she was.  I think I am winning!  Never ever give up!

In between all of this I got on with a lot of projects.   I got my dried fruit soaking over night and then made up my Christmas cakes.

Mum gave me half a bottle of Brandy so that is what I used!

The cakes are all gifts.   I have not wrapped them yet.

The most urgent use it up project involved Bananas.  I used nine and make four cakes.  The peels all went into my veggie garden beds.

Two were gluten free.  They got thick lemon icing.  One was frozen, one fed helpers, one was for Mum and this one, below, I sent to Chloe.  As it was still warm I sent the icing in a bowl ready to put on top.

I am collecting twenty eggs a day.  The cakes used some.  I am supplying everyone.  Recently I got so far ahead that I was able to donate ten dozen to a friend who re trains and re homes dogs.  She has saved so many.  I was so happy to be able to do that!

But then the next day....

So even though I used 15 in the Christmas cakes and another 8 in the banana cakes I then made Lemon Butter and used another 9.   Because after Bananas and eggs the next need to use up thing was lemons!

I froze several jars and made up little jar deserts for Chloe's family.  Two bigger and two little.

I filled the freeze drier with lemon slices.

These turn out really well.

I labelled my Vanilla Extract for giving.

Also my Coffee Liqueur which I may or may not have tested.

I used a freezer meal beef and veggie pie plus the jar deserts to deliver a meal to Chloe.

I planted three different types of tomato seedlings,  heaps of basil,  more zucchinis, capsicums and cucumbers.   My bath tub and trough planters are going pretty well.   Room was made for new things by filling some additional pots and pulling out really spent silverbeet and celery.  This all was quite a lot and fed the goats and chickens.  They all demolished it.  Then beds and pots were topped up with compost so each was filled up well.

I had a row of pots with Ficus trees along the front of the house.  They were not looking good because I think they get too much harsh weather.  So my helpers moved them up to the deck for me.  I hope with more shelter and more water they thrive again.  In the same way (kind of) a Lemon tree that is not doing well in a pot was moved into the orchard and I hope now it will take off. You have to try.  You can see when something is just not going to make it!

The second or third day I had Justice it started spitting with rain.   My helpers used the tractor to give her a little shed of her own.  Andy turned this tank into a little house.  It was sitting in another paddock so it was simple to just pick it up and move it into place.  Well, for Tim anyway!  You can't see it here but the other side had a lovely mesh door and latch.   Once in place some hay went in.

I was not sure if she would get up and walk around enough to find it and go in.  But it was set up nicely.
Also we added her own trough which is a big old cast iron pot.   These are great because they cannot be knocked over.

That evening,  just as it was getting dark,  I went for a walk (in my nightie and slippers) to check on Justice.  I couldn't see her!  When I got close enough I found she had put herself to bed in her new little house!  I thought this was the cutest thing!  😊

The next development is she liked it so much she didn't come out for two days.

Then as she began to drink properly she started to get out and about.

I shoved my latest lot of wildflowers into a canning jar ready to go into my "shop."  (Pantry room.)

I have to include this photo of Chase and Lilly! 💗

When I bought my seedlings I got several punnets for Tom as they were called Tommy Toes.   And he loves little tomatoes.   Chloe helped him plant them and he was super happy about it.   The next day he was convinced they had grown.

Does this child look like a small farmer to you?

I got a new phone as I had smashed my phone (along with my tooth but in unrelated incidences!) and my tooth is fixed as well.  I hope I am done smashing things.

Tomorrow I am pretending not to be home.  I soaked in an Epsom Salt bath.  I will get up in the morning and wearing my nightie (and cloke of invisibility)  feed Justice at breakfast then come back to bed for a while.

I hope you had a good week, full of opportunities and goodness!  How did you feather your nest this week?xxx

  1. Annabel and Dear Bluebirds,
Annabel what an extremely long and productive week you have had. Justice looks so adorable. So happy you had the makeshift shed for her to live in from the rain.
Your grandchildren are adorable, they look so happy. I think you have the makings of a great farmer there.
Your cooking looks amazing and delicious.

I had a slow week at home as we traveled for 3 days, 8 hours drives for 2 days. I crocheted a few squares during the drive when it wasn't raining. I am sort of a co-pilot to keep eyes on traffic for husband.

I did pray to be blessed when I go to 2 thrift stores in the city we were going to. I needed winter tops and summer dresses. It is amazing how the Lord blesses us in these little ways. I was able to find some clothes at 1/2 off, 15% off others for seniors and others for $0.99 each. I had a hard decision spending a little over $5 for a sweater, though it was long and warm. I wore it to dinner that night. I came home with dresses, tops, a divided oven dish and a pastry scraper, plus a large roll of Christmas ribbon (which I will use as a garland on one tree).

Following you and using produce I have I will be roasting a pumpkin we purchased for decoration for Halloween. Hoping to save some of the seeds to plant next Spring.

Annabel, your lemon cakes make me want to use my lemons for a cake now. Love how you use everything up so well.

    1. Dear Rosanne, Yes travelling sure takes a lot of time out of a week but you had such good finds at the thrift stores it was worth it! I only got a scraper less than two years ago now it is my most used tool. I loved the divided dish too.
I always buy good ribbons as well!
Using the pumpkin was really great. I love pumpkin. Lemons are so good. So much potential. Have a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx

  3. Dear Annabel, half time reading I was prepared to write I just love Justice (I really do!) but then the picture of your grandkids appeared and now I write I just love your grandkids! They are wonderful! With my son, we were playing The game of patience - in little pots we were planting seedlings and wait with patience. It was his job to water and supervise - the biger the joy when somethinappeared and bloomed or rippen in his pots. Now he mostly plant fruit trees and berry bushes.

We woke up to snow on Wednesday, but in the weekend all the Autumn chores were done - the mint pots, dahlia tubers and gladioli bulbs down in the cellar, all the flowers pots arranged in the house, the flower garden and the garden cleaned and put to sleep over winter, the winery and orchard taken care of. It is cold and dark when I leave the house in the morning and when I come home in the afternoon. My second job is more demanding from now until Christmas so all my energy is there.

    1. Dear Laura, It is such a lot of work for you to put away and protect the garden before the freezing conditions. We dont have any of this and I am just staggered by what is needed each season. Well done on getting all these chores done!
It is hard when it is dark to get up! Plus dark when you come home! Please take care of yourself while doing the second job during this busy time. I hope your chickens will keep laying as long as possible! With much love Annabel.xxx

  5. This is a special time of year to read your blogposts. While I’m heading into winter, there’s snow on the ground today, you’re in the gardening honeymoon. Things are starting to grow fresh with possibilities and you’re not tired of weeding yet! I see your beautiful garden and start making plans for next season. I enjoy living vicariously :) I think next years plan is going to include some sort of grasshopper protection. They were everywhere this year. It seemed almost biblical. Mel inUS

    1. @Mel in US Love the phrase Gardening Honeymoon. What a perfect was to describe the eager energy of spring gardening! Here in NW WA state, we had an early frost in September and October was warm and wet - I am amazed at how many things started growing again - pumpkin vines have put on 4 inches, geraniums are blooming again and I have large fat, but still white strawberries! ~Lace Faerie

    2. Dear Mel, Grasshoppers are terrible. We have experienced plagues although not recently thankfully. I could only cover some things with nets. I would dread that happening again!
The rain has helped things look bright and perky. I need to do some work though before the next wind storm. I need some wind breaks for that new area. I think winter is the rest from it all. And planning time! With love and thanks, Annabel.xxx

  6. Hello Annabel (and everyone),

It is wonderful that your little calf is improving and willing to eat now! All of your beautiful cooking and gifts look so good, Annabel. It's so nice to see Tom and Lily - and the love! I hope everything is ok with your tooth now.

This week was a wild one at work, so I just tried to do one extra thing each day. A baking day to use up some bananas (banana bread with cranberries), a little batch cooking (chicken and veggies), a dinner with Dad, a trip to Aldi, a morning cleaning up some fall leaves, and a day to clean out the fridge (and the kitchen). I put a few rows into a knitted shawl and wrapped my first few Christmas gifts. This weekend I'm hoping to do a pantry stock-up trip to the price club, get my bulbs in the ground, and have some crafting time.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Here many bulbs go first into the crisper section of the fridge so they think they had cold weather. I did this with tulips and it worked! Where you have actual cold weather!
So nice you could have dinner with your Dad and get some presents wrapped! You are doing so well. With much love Annabel.xxx

  7. Enjoy your day of rest Annabel, I’d say you deserve it after such a big week!

I’m so glad you persevered with Justice and were able to get her to drink 💜

All your baking looks beautiful! And such a great way to use your abundance of eggs! I have a good recipe that I made this week for a frittata that uses 12 eggs, so that is another good use for them too! It sounds like you achieved quite a lot in your garden as well! The photo of Chase and Lily is adorable and yes…young Tom is a farmer in the making for sure!!

I had a good week, the usual housework was done of course, bathrooms cleaned, washing, meals, groceries, but I also did a huge clean up and sort of my fridge and pantry. Hubby repaired a hinge on our fridge and that sparked a whole cleaning frenzy, but it was something I had wanted to do for some time and I’m so happy now it’s done, everything is neat, in jars and labelled and it looks pretty too!

I made yogurt from scratch again, I baked 10 bread rolls for the freezer. They will be hamburgers for tonight’s dinner and I made the fruit mince pie filing, its flavours are mingling in the fridge until I can make time to make the pies!

Thursday and Friday I worked at paid employment and whammo here we are another week over!! It goes so quick!

I’m going to focus on Christmas shopping this week, starting with a local craft market today!

Have a lovely week Bluebirds 🪺 From Cheryl

    1. Dear Cheryl, You were busy! I hope you enjoyed the market and also go ideas! I love markets for ideas and also to see prices on things. Also I like to support people who are making/producing stuff. I think a 12 egg frittata would be very versatile and good. Also nice for taking to work. I am getting the hint to do my fridge because of what you did and also Kathy cleaned her fridge. Mine is mainly messy and needs organising but it is so nice to open a clean and organised fridge.
Thank you re the babies and small farmer! With much love Annabel.xxx

  9. Dear Annabel, goodness Lily Ida little dolly! She’s so sweet. And Chase’s hair is beautiful. I love how Justice loved her new home and how Andy had made it. You have had a big week. I was feeling overwhelmed by the world and the world news and picked up my Bible. Then I realised the only thing I need to believe in is God! The rest I can forget. It is just noise to distract. Christmas cakes are such a wonderful gift! I love lemon butter, oh it’s my favourite. I think any food gifts are important now as people may be cutting back on things in their grocery budget. I am determined to find new ways of stretching meals. Lots of love, Bridget

Yes I thought how Andy made the door and frame for this little house and how much Justice loves it. I hope your new week goes very well! With love Annabel.xxx

  10. Hi Annabel
What a busy, good week. Your persistence with Justice seems to be paying off, hope improvement continues. Your cooking is a blessing to your family, what a nice photo of the children. You made good use of all your resources and increased the store cupboard. I laughed about staying in your nightie and pretending you're not at home!
I also did some cooking to help out my daughter and SIL while they're tired with the new baby and baked a coffee and walnut sponge cake for floral group. I made soup from homegrown butternut squash and put in the freezer for'one of those days' and gave a couple of squash to our window cleaner as he did us a favour. I planted up eight pots with flower bulbs to give as Christmas gifts and also potted up winter flowering bulbs for us to have in the house.
I've bought more Christmas goodies at good prices.
Hope all Bluebirds have a good week.

  11. I finished up my Christmas food shopping taking advantage of sales. I do sisdes for Christmas someone else does the meats. I am actually going back one more time because.....i am trying my hand at cranberry juice today! (and they are on sale 2 for $4). I am going to try blueberry cranberry juice and just plain cranberry juice. I FINALLY broke down and bought myself a steam canner! Next big purchase will be a 'canner' canner. I am scared to death of tha one though. But in these times....Anyway, I am excited to try the juices and jams and pickles!

  12. A little farmer indeed!!! Oh Tom, you are such a handsome young farmer!!
Annabel, I do think God has given you an adventurous spirit, and that shows in your grandchildren, your cattle (I still remember young Laffie back in the day), your idea for a pantry/shop (LOVE that!), and all your productivity. God bless you my friend!! xxxx
My biggest thing this past week was to find room to expand our pantry. The house is small, with only two built in cupboards - our bedroom wardrobe (which is already half full of supplies), and the linen cupboard (half full of supplies for our home apothecary, preserving etc) - so I found some 'under the bed' plastic tubs and decided to store all my preserving jars and the various equipment that goes with them, in two of the tubs. In the third I'm storing soaps, shampoo, cleaning items etc. This has given me more space to add to our pantry supplies. Very satisfied.

    Replies
    1. Dear Jenny, Thank you so much! I love that you have the under bed storage. Truly that is a lot of useful space. It is kind of exciting to find space. I decided to have a huge old wardrobe on the back veranda. We put some shelves in it. Things that are not affected by heat go in there ie my tins, foil trays, plastic containers, jars, paper towel... This cupboard actually looks nice. So also I have a cupboard on the front veranda! This one holds egg cartons, outdoor type cleaning produces, car cleaning stuff, garden sprays and stuff like that. In my lounge room I have two cabinets that are antique and pretty, I painted them white and distressed them. No one ever asks what is in them! In one are all my spices and mixes like cream of chicken mix etc. In the other I have all canning jars full of sugar, salt, pasta, rice... So all this is in plain sight in my lounge room. Where there is room for a cabinet this is a possibility. On Frugal Queen in France I saw she has high up shelves in her laundry all lined up with her laundry products. A whole shelf in the laundry was a good idea and then a shelf above the door frame in the bathroom and toilet for toilet paper as no one even notices that space or ever uses it. Maybe we should both do a blog post on this!
It is so nice you remember Laffie being a baby and when she arrived here in the back of a car, sent by my Dad! And so my collection began! Only today I fed her cut up apples and she has a beautiful baby.
God Bless you too and I hope the week is full of goodness! With love Annabel.xxx

  13. Dear Annabel,
So glad you persevered to feed Justice. Congratulations. Your grandchildren are all so adorable! I love it when you share photos of them. Your cakes are all so lovely. Glad you have so much prepared for Christmas. Well done!
I had a good week of preparing my home. Due to my husband's declining health, I will be returning to the workforce. So like Laura and Kathy, I will have much to balance.
So glad to have gleaned so much inspiration and encouragement for the last 10(?) years!! I am thankful to know of Laine's celebration of life service coming up. I gained a lot of knowledge from her 17 years ago. So much of what she shared and what you have been sharing, Annabel.

    1. Dear Leslie, I am really sorry about your husbands health. I hope things can improve for him. I know you are always busy and it will take a lot to manage working outside the home as well. With such a big change get everyone one in on how to make it work and take up new roles. This is not a bad thing. I remember when my kids were young I got frequent terrible migraines where I couldn't even move. Well the girls learned to do a lot of things because of those days where normally I would do everything. So maybe there was a blessing in there as they had to step up and I had to step down. When we need help there is a learning opportunity in there. I will be watching Laine's service, live I hope I have to figure out the time difference. I gained so much wisdom from her also! 14. With Patsi's class over on the Tuesday Afternoon site I've been doing a lot of deep thinking. No actions much yet, just what I am personally able to do right now but I have been thinking and want to work out a doable plan.

Our week went really well last week. We had rain which was needed here. And it began to act as though it were really fall. I've thoroughly enjoyed the change into the proper season at last!

Over the last couple of weeks I have mostly cooked at home, made some new shams for my bedroom, baked breads and desserts, and have been combing the budget for places to cut in the next year. I emptied all the leftovers in the fridge into a pot to make soup (and it was GOOD), then planned a weeks meals with no need to purchase a thing.

I feel, compared to you, I've done absolutely nothing much, lol, but my life is different than yours and the season we are in is the opposite as well. But we are continuing.

    1. Dear Terri, From your blog I have seen before that you sew beautifully. I think if you list goals from the class then you can put them into action as you can and come up with solutions. I am glad you had rain. We had some too and it is so helpful. All your cooking sounds so good and using up your left overs. I think you did a lot! Autumn is certainly different to Spring and the type of work to do. We only have a couple of weeks and we will be going into summer which is the most difficult season here. But Spring itself has been really nice. How much I get done. has a lot to do with the weather for sure. Have a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
