Feather your Nest Friday, 16th August, 2024.

The big news around here is that last night it rained.  It was the most rain we have had in a long time which was 18mil  (72 points, ish.)   By many standards this isn't a lot but with things being desperate it is a lot here.    It started about 8pm and it was so exciting I had the window open listening and did not sleep much because I kept wanting to know if it was still going.     Now as I write it has started again.  To say I am grateful is a big understatement.   Please God, let it continue.

This week I used up some more veggies.  This time I did two trays of roast pumpkin, carrots and potatoes.  This tray was for Chloe's family.  Somehow such a simple thing as roast veggies is always good and could be used in many ways.

A little while ago I bought the wooden farm and sheep yards from a man near by.   This time he made a carpark!  Well,  I bought it from him as it is entirely different and just beautiful.

I figure things like this should last a few generations!

Picking this up involved a drive to a little town where the thrift store is absolutely gorgeous.   I just made the most it it,  had a coffee at the cafe, a chat with the lovely lady in the shop (it is her husband who makes the toys) and browsed.  Oh, and I also offloaded some donations!

For ages one of my planned crafts has been to make candles inside beautiful crystal containers.   I just lacked enough crystal.  This idea is on Cath's blog homeamongthegumtrees.com  Once a year Cath makes a you tube video (The Cheapskates Club) where she shows everything she made for the Christmas present cupboard for the year.  I look forward to this episode so much!   For me I think the candles will be a next year gift project as most of this years presents are already made.  But I was so happy as nothing cost more than $2.

I also got some kids books,  a beautiful quilting book,  a chicken chalk board and an egg cooker!

AND skincare, obviously brand new unsealed... including Clarins.  Who gives away this stuff!?

None of there were more than $2 either.

So I was very happy and it was also fun!   So here I will add... we have to have a break and have some fun.   Everyone is under pressure and everyone seems to have worries.  It has been so grim with farmers around our state,  also interstate.   When we can get some time out,  do something lovely, we must do it!

It had been a while since I drove out amongst the cows (since my interactions with them have been mostly driving them off the lawn!)  I thought they may even have forgotten about apples.  But no.  They remembered.

Excuse the cow slobber.  I need to get out there often now so they are super tame as there are calves coming in October!   If the cows are super friendly I can get right next to the calves and it is so beautiful!   They then have no fear either!

I am plodding away at my blanket...  quite slowly.  If I get to evening too tired not much gets done!

There are signs of Spring everywhere.  Two weeks to go... but we want it to hold off a little and get some more rain first!

I am going to try and get photos of the road sides to show you as mainly everything is yellow. Wattle is the main flower now and it is yellow everywhere.  It is quite amazing.  We kind of take it for granted but I have now appreciated how the burst of intense colour is so hopeful and cheerful.

I mended some bedding for Chloe.

The chicks I had been growing up are now in the second main hen house.  So now I have 15 hens in one house and  7 hens and one rooster in the other.

I think on Sunday I am getting eggs that I can incubate...  I will be turning on the incubator tomorrow and setting it up.   This would give me Spring chickens! haha!   There is a family I have in mind to give some hens to.   Plus you can never have too many!

The grass catcher on the mower now collects so much chicken feed.  Putting all the catchings to good use has really been fantastic.   The hens scratch around this and eat for days.  Chickens are another way to add happiness to life.   They are so enthusiastic it is beautiful.

I hope to listen to rain again tonight.  That would be perfect.  No one comes here to be dragged down a pit of doom lol and I always try to keep going and be encouraging.. but I have to say sometimes stress gets me.   One thing I do every single night before I go to sleep is to list (not written, counted on fingers...) ten things that I am grateful for about the day.   Even on an absolute rubbish day I have always managed to still come up with ten.   Sometimes I keep going and come up with many more!   So I say.... 1.  It rained!  Thank you Lord.  2.  I went to prayer group and met someone new, thank you Lord, 3. I added to my pantry, thank you Lord .... and so on.    This is a good way for me to end the day and really helps me go to sleep happy!   Sometimes we don't even realise some of the ways we were blessed until we actually stop and consider!    Looking back over the week is a similar thing.   I can see there were many good things.   I hope the same for you! xxx

  1. Hello Annabel and Bluebirds,
Annabel what a lovely week you have had. Your Op Shop finds are wonderful. Isn't it amazing how God blesses us and cheers us up with these little surprises.
I love how the cows are so docile and friendly.

I though I had a slow week till I looked back on it. Many accomplishments on husband's side. We were able to get the rims on our car all fixed for free, the dealer we purchased the car from months ago paid for it.
My husband has been on a run of getting the outside equipment repaired, and so far has both mowers fixed. We have drainage problems and it was a surprise to see the landscaper here a week early to start work on drainage and a wall. God is good!
I was able to do a deep cleaning of both floors in our home and started cleaning my medical pantry.
I crocheted more wash cloths and facial scrubbies, then have moved on for a change in pace to making an afghan for my living room for upcoming winter. God is good because it looks like I may not even have to purchase any extra yarn.

We found markdowns at the grocery store, from bakery to grocery, I always pray when we walk into a store to find bargains to help our pantry.

I have been baking and even made my husband breakfast 3 days in a row. he's the cook in the house, I am the baker, but I thought he needed a break. He enjoyed the blueberry muffins, frittata and fruit salad I had made.

When we look back on our weeks we can see so many things to be thankful for, the hard time will then disappear into the background.

May all Bluebirds have a blessed and wonderful week ahead.

  4. The man who crafts the lovely toys is very talented. What a wonderful keepsake.
It has been very hot this summer here. We have has rains on and off, which is unusual and a true blessing. Even so, we still water daily, so our water bill has been high. We have a lot of fruit growing, so John makes sure it gets plenty of water.
Next week, I need to process all the currants that are in the refrigerator waiting to become jam. Our apples ripened a month early, so they need picked, also. The elderberries won't be ready until next month.
We got a few plums this year, but nothing to write home about. The Saskatoon blueberries produced, however, the birds got many of them through the spaces in the netting.
May God abundantly bless all of you.

    1. Dear Glenda, Thank you! I am glad you got some rain and some fruit, even if the birds got some. I am not sure if you collect rain water for the garden? One inch is enough to go a long way to filling my tanks and this keeps me in water and much of the garden. Still hoping for more but I am very grateful for the last couple of days. Now I have blossoms on fruit trees! I have some nets to sew for some of the smaller trees that I think will fruit this year. With much love Annabel.xxx

  5. Dear Annabel, Thankyou for today's a lovely encouraging post. The blanket you are working on is just beautiful. I am happy for you getting the rain. We are hoping for some in my corner of Australia tomorrow. I have been working on lowering the stress levels in my house too. I loved seeing your opp shop finds. I had a miracle opp shop experience last Saturday. I will try explain how truly amazing it was. As a background - I love Christmas and in particular decorating my Christmas tree. I have made a conscious effort to really enjoy the process of decorating it over the last few years to try bring some Christmas magic back to my house. So for the last few years I have bought "new" decorations for the tree and now I really do have enough and told myself I can only buy one or two new ones this year and they have to be really special. In an effort to distract and relax last week I was looking through Ebay and just letting myself admire decorations with no intention to buy. I came across ornaments made by a company called Department 56. This is an American company. Maybe the American Bluebirds know of them. They make a lot of houses/village scenes and also one of their Artists makes ornaments called Snowbabies. She has done so for 30 years. Each year the Snowbabies are different and then they get retired etc. I was loving looking at them, I find them really cute. Some of the second hand ones I saw were reasonably priced but postage from America is really high - over $75 mostly. So I just admired and forgot about them.....now.........drum roll. Saturday I went to an opp shop in a very small town nearby. There was a green box. It said Department 56. My brain was like....mmm what is that, why does that sound familiar? On opening the box - there was a Snowbaby ornament! The crazy thing was I still debated whether to get it or not, as it was $15. I got it home - it was all dusty but cleaned up perfectly, with it's cute handpainted face. I looked up the website and was able to watch the Artist called Kristi Jensen Pierro and her process of making them. They also have a retired part of the website and I was able to see it was called "I'm making snowballs" and was the fourth design she ever did, made in1986. I was super excited. It was so great and I thanked God for allowing me to have so much fun. It will be my table centre piece at Christmas. So far I haven't seen any Snowbabies for sale in Australia on any site. Maybe someone bought it in America as a gift and it ended up in my local Opp Shop - for me - three days after admiring them on Ebay. AMAZING! and so much FUN! Love Clare

I just looked up the snowbabies... now I realise I have seen them before online but not in real life. Did you see the price of them!!? They are just gorgeous. How exciting for you! I 100% agree with you that decorating for Christmas and making it special is very uplifting! I will determine to do that this year although I already have some anxiety about it because of Andy. But he would want us to celebrate. Anyway I will work on that. Have a beautiful weekend Clare, with love Annabel.xxx

  6. Dear Annabel,

You are truly a blessing; your words here are more encouraging than you'll ever know! It sounds like you picked up some really good finds while op shopping, and your blanket is coming along beautifully. (It looks fabulous against the flower garden backdrop!)

It has been a week of ups and downs, here. Sometimes it sure feels like one step forward, three steps back! But you are spot on, listing the "Thank you, Lord" items sure helps put things in perspective and brightens everything up. Right now I am mainly grateful for two new kitties...a mama and her 5 month old "baby"...just what I needed for company around here! (And the mice better watch out! Ha, ha!)

A lot of days are we just keep afloat and others we might get something extra achieved but if we go to bed at night and everyone is fed and well then it was a successful day! With lots of love Annabel.xxx

  8. Dear Annabel and Bluebirds all over the world. This was a very nice and positive post here, and I am smiling while reading because me too, at the end of the day, I am counting on fingers the things I managed get done, the blesings and the thanks, and it is always more than ten. 1. Fed the animals 2. Gathered rainwater and watered the plants, 3. Defrost the freezer and prepare meal for the next day, etc......we are alike even thousands of miles apart. I love the crochet blanket and the wood craft parking lot, what a talents. Also, loved the cows and the candles making project. I always love the idea of constant learning new things, like "when was the last time you did something for the first time?". I have bad and good news but I choose to see the positive side. The worst news is my great magnificent rooster Philip is gone - we have found him dead early in the morning when we went feeding them before work. No warning sign, no stress, nothing different at all. I cried and we burried him near his girls and thankfully, all the chickens are all right. Both my son and my husband had minor surgeries to remove birthmarks from the skin but thankfully, both are all right after biopsy. I did put away some things for the #everylittlebitcountschallenge but did not succed every day. In stead, I add to that my own version as every little bit that I do counts, like good price I have found on the shopping day, defrost and organise the freezer and started adding green beans, roasted eggplants and different meat I purchased on sale, etc. Right now I dehydrate a bunch of tomatoes - almost every day I harvest them from the garden, along with thyme, mint, calendula flowers and nettles. We have very hot weather and no rain, but the aplles and the grapes enjoy that. This year the harvest will begin much earlier, they are almost ripe ( that means almost a month earlier then usual). A good news is, we have found a natural lake that was cleaned and very good for swimming near our town, 20 minutes driving. It is on the ground where the old salt mines were for centuries and the water is a bit salty, which is very good for my husbands muscles and bones pain. So, as you said Annabel, sometimes a break is good, and once or twice a week we go there for two-three hours, for a swim, surrounded by hills, green trees, wild ducks and silence. And it is for free, so big pleasures don't have to break the wallet. A big hug to everyone, and I invite you all to the lake, in Laura_s_world from Romania

That is very odd about the Rooster. Mysterious as you could tell if he was injured... On the upside your hens are ok thank goodness!
Also it is very good both your husband and sons biopsies were ok! I very much like your thinking on the every day do something... as it is all adding in the right direction! I think I will do this! Mentally these things help me! In the garden I could do this, each day something... as soon it will be spring! I just love the sound of the lake! And if you head off with a picnic it would be a beautiful outing. I do believe the salty soak is very good. I think this sounds so awesome! I hope you are having a good week and all the hens continue to be fine! With much love Annabel.xxx

  9. We have some vintage toys like an airport and a farm and last weekend when the three teenaged grandchildren were here they had all of them out and played! I loved that they still had fun with those toys! In my Mom's last year when she had dementia so bad and would cry every time I talked t her on the phone I would ask her to tell me something good that happened that day. She would stop crying and think and any small thing she could come up with completely changed her focus. Counting our blessings is that powerful!

This week, I used your chicken pot pie method to make three meals of chicken filling. For dinner that night, we used the pie filling and put chicken flavored stuffing on top for casserole. Two pies were put into the freezer with regular pie crust! After watching the Cheapskate Club video, I grocery shopped and spent less than half of normal costs. I was buying a few convenience foods that I cut out, and plan to cut out more. In their place, I want to learn more recipes to bake for my guys, too! I made savory scones this week, and they were a hit with Husband and two boys at home.
You have me thinking of Christmas this year, as our budget needs to stretch a little further. I plan to give my four children digital copies of the family photos, perhaps with a framed one. I'll be looking at other ideas for the young adults in my life!

  12. Hi Annabel
What a pleasing week you had, the wooden toys are amazing, they will last for years. Lovely to get the skincare too, it reminds me so much of my late Mum to see the Clarins, she always used it and had beautiful skin. I do exactly the same at the end of the day, count my blessings and say thank you. It calms my mind and stops it whirling, ready for sleep.
I have added to our winter food by blanching lots of home grown runner beans and frozen them in 2 portion packs. The tomatoes are doing well now and I am able to keep picking lots of flowers for the house. We also pulled celery, spring onions and I used my first bulb of garlic. We have it all drying in the potting shed.
My husband was given a few packets of unusual shortbread flavours at a volunteer working party and also a small promotional reuseable water bottle, just the right size to go in a tote bag when out and about.
I seized the opportunity to buy two new cotton dresses on a deal and a pair of trousers reduced price ready for autumn. I wear my clothes for many years, they go from 'best' to 'second best' to 'wear around the house only' to cleaning cloths!
A daughter received a necklace some years ago as a gift and didn't think it suited her so gave it to me recently. It was rather short so I took it to a craft fair and a lady who makes jewellery kindly lengthened it with some sterling silver chain and only charged me £5 for the chain and her labour. Bargain!

Lovely cotton dresses are really nice, also cool. Cotton has become expensive so now I look at cotton clothing in the thrift stores... and inspect it... thinking of cutting into fat quarters! Great idea to lengthen the necklace! Very clever! I hope this week is going well for you! With love Annabel.xxx

  13. Hello Annabel,

I’m so glad you received rain! It sounds like you had a lovely week. Every Saturday morning when I wake up and read your post over a cup of tea, I am encouraged and motivated! It’s the kickstart I need to my weekend and week!

Last Saturday was a fine sunny day, but we knew rain was coming and big rain! So I spent the entire day in the garden, doing a myriad of chores and then I got out the pressure washer and washed down several paths that were getting slippery from moss etc, I can report I was very sore and sorry on Sunday!

The predicted rain came, low areas and creeks flooded, but we were safe and dry 🙏 I spent this inside time rearranging two rooms in the house to make the spaces more fit for purpose. We now have a clean (almost organised) home office area and the second room is storage for music and sewing supplies. I was a bit sore after moving all that furniture around too! 😂

The rain continued on Monday so I donned my gum boots and umbrella and spread rooster booster, blood and bone and rock minerals under my orchard trees! No need to water in!!

I’ve kept baking our bread each week, and it is so much cheaper and nicer than commercial bread that I don’t think I can go back nor do I want to!

That day I also made Wendy’s muesli bars, oh they are the best! The closest I’ve ever made to shop bought, but no questionable ingredients, and cheaper!

I also filled the dehydrator with grated onions, carrots and celery (they have all been very inexpensive at the moment) and when they were dry I whizzed them in my food processor to make veggie powder. I’ve never made this before, but I got the idea of Jess from 3 rivers homestead. I’ve been experimenting with putting it in any dish I think will benefit.

After all that it was back to “work” on Thursday and Friday! Ha!

Have a lovely week everyone. From Cheryl 🐦

Well done on the onions, carrots and celery! Good idea while the prices are right for sure. Veggie powder is like powdered stock or vitamins or both! Certain colour veggie powders can colour pasta if you were to handmade some... think green or pink!
Glad you stayed dry and no flooding! I did laugh about going back to work Thursday. Sometimes it's a holiday to go back to work haha! With love Annabel.xxx

Congratulations to everyone on the op shop finds and frugal accomplishments.😊 Love your homemade toy. Wish I lived closer, I would buy one too.

My week was productive. We are harvesting tomatoes from the garden. And the kids and I picked apples at my m-i-l's. So wonderful to have fresh herbs to put into meals and tomato sauce. We were gifted some sweet corn on the cob.
My husband had some driving work. My second daughter moved to college. She and her roommate are perfect for each other. Classes begin Monday. We are all so excited for her.

  17. This week I had gotten a bit depressed, having heard a news report that first frightened me then made me realize that we cannot plan for all things no matter how hard we try. I determined that one thing I must do is to make a gratitude list every single day. I do write mine out. It's also a good way to track answered prayers...Anyway, that was my solution to turning my own attitude around once more. I did this during a very difficult financial spell years ago and it was life changing. So I know it will work!

I have been trying to participate a little in the 3RiversHomestead challenge. I do not have a garden but I managed to put up three jars of apple butter and plum jam last week from fruit that was looking less than nice but oh how delicious it tasted once it was cooked.
While I was organizing the freezer I realized I'd put up a good bit of frozen peaches and blueberries. Now I'm excited to see what the next flush of seasonal items will help me do in my pantry! I kept in mind that #everybitcounts, even small amounts if it was saved for later.

It seemed like every meal I made expanded to way more than I'd anticipated, too. We'll finish up leftovers this weekend.

I have a lovely recipe for enchiladas Annabel that uses pumpkin. The original recipe calls for one can of pumpkin which would be 15ounces, a jalapeno, and a medium onion seasoned with cumin and chili powder. Then you add in 1 cup of broth or water and cook this mixture on the stove top until it's thick and velvety. Add 1/2 this mixture to one 1 cup cooked, dried mashed beans (I used black beans as I have loads that need to be used up), along with 1 1/2 cups of cooked chicken. Add 1 cup shredded cheese. Place 1/3 cup of the mixture in a small 6in diameter tortilla.
Then thin the remaining pumpkin sauce with another 1/2 cup of broth and pour that over the rolled tortillas and sprinkle with a bit more cheese. This is a lovely dish, so velvety and flavorful, much more so than you'd think and a lovely way to use pumpkin.

    2. Dear Terri, I am glad you conquered the depression. To be honest I have seen news reports that scare me very much, recently. I like that you are writing down things and you managed to get the feelings under control. From this we can certainly see how anyone might be overwhelmed and how we can "fall into a hole" thats how I put it!
Adding to your shelves with preserves plus working on the freezer were both great! Thank you so much for the recipe with the pumpkin! With lots of love, Annabel.xxx

What a lovely post! It made me feel good all over. I am very thankful in my prayers but it had not occurred to me to count off 10 things of thankfulness--the little things that are sometimes forgotten but make such a difference in life. Thank you.

This week I canned 18 pints of dry beans. I had several unopened packages of beans that were getting quite elderly (like pre-Covid). One of the jars didn't seal because I got the the band on crooked, so we ate that jar for Taco Thursday. They were delicious! It isn't necessary to presoak the beans. It was much easier than cooking 3 different kinds of beans and freezing them.

Thank you to all of the Bluebirds that have posted. Just wondering why a rooster would need a booster, LOL.

  19. Thanking God for your rain. As farmers, we never take rain for granted. This year we are finally out of our past 2 year drought. The crops look so nice and green, even if the prices are terrible.
    Lily is adorable!
I know you have probably shared your pattern for the crocheted blanket but could you share it again in your next post. I think I'd like to start one this fall myself. The blues are so pretty.
Finally, I try to remember to thank Father God every night for my blessings from the day. He is so good to us!
Praying for you as you continue on your journey in this life. *hug*

    1. Dear Kay, Yes, I was raised to never complain about rain! And that the sound of rain on the roof = happiness. But prices are another story. I am glad you have had a good season though.
I will have to try and find the name of this stitch or write it up. Ive been doing this one a while. I thought it was called Pineapple stitch but when I looked it up that wasn't right! Thank you for your prayers I really appreciate prayer. With love Annabel.xxx

  20. Hi Annabel and Bluebirds

What a beautiful week you have had Annabel.
Today is the first time in weeks that I have been able to get up and move myself as I have had a dreaded flu bug that went to my chest. The Dr said "rest" not that easy with DD14 and Mum to look after but was grateful when DP was home and took over. I was also grateful that DD14 could get dinners and that we had a freezer stash of dinners that I could take out each morning and DD14 could just reheat for us.
The other week at work we ran out of gas BBQ bottles and every so often the company has said this will happen, they will delay delivery of them in hope of not running out of gas supply. It is a concern as the house we currently rent has big gas bottles.
Today was an early start as DD14 went on an excursion so school by 7.30am and home around 3.30 -4pm. I have washed 2 loads and caught up on some computer work and will now have a rest for the remainder of the day. I will cook extra savoury mince tonight so that I can start to restock the freezer.

    Have a wonderful week
    Take Care

    1. Dear Aly,
Thank you! I am so sorry you have been so sick! I hope you are doing better now. When the girls were young I used to get terrible migraines. Well I could do nothing. In later years I realised in those times the girls learned to do a lot of things and that was a good thing. So they were quite young when I heard them chopping carrots at about 4 o'clock in the afternoon as they were allowing two hours to make dinner!
I am wondering if you could get a spare gas bottle and rotate it through. That does sound like a bit of a concern. Australia... with so much gas and here we are. It is so good that you had frozen meals and now you can begin restocking! I do hope you are better! With love, Annabel.xxx
