Back to basics. What is a good day?

Earlier today I was at Chloe's.  She had three children sleeping and was baking.   Today is a glorious sunny Autumn day.  It really is just lovely.  The boys had been out with Dad doing farm work which is basically all they want to do!  Dinner was planned.   When the girls were little this is what I considered a good day.

Now that I am trying to find a new routine I am thinking about what a good day is for me.  I think I am beginning to find it.  Yesterday was mostly restful and I had my diary out and planned the week. This Monday morning I got the house vacuumed and the floors mopped.  Then I did some deep cleaning in the bedroom and got the sheets in the washing machine.   While they were washing I watered my herbs and veggies then I fed chickens, watered goats, fed dogs and so on.  I soaked in the beautiful sunshine.

I went on to get the linen back on the bed then mid afternoon as my energy is running low I sat and did some Bible study.    Now I have some chicken cooking to make a good sized pasta sauce I call (after my friend)  Hilde's pasta.   Chicken, garlic, onion, cream cheese, spinach and cream.   It is really good!  While my chicken is cooking I got some other cleaning done in the kitchen.

My floors look and smell clean which is so nice.  So this is where I jump in and say I am so happy with this gorgeous day and clean floors.  I am so happy with fresh linen.   😊

When someone asks you "what have you been doing?" do you feel pressure to come up with something more magnificent than "I washed my linen and floors and made pasta for dinner"....  I know much of my life I have felt that my happiness with things like well fed children, lunch boxes packed,  my veggie garden going well...  are not the stuff of a thrilling story and I should be able to come up with something like "I just returned from Paris."    This makes me laugh as Black Cockatoos just flew past the window... which is to me much more exciting than a trip.   Seriously if I can finish off the day with a soak in the bath I will say this was a very good day.

Philippians 4 says whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, what ever is admirable... to think on these things.   Because of what I have been reading, what I have been watching and because of prayer and good plans... my mind has been absolutely filled with good things.   My photos of Andy in good and healthy times make me feel happy.  I feel quite at peace.   The friend I mentioned, who lost her husband in similar circumstances, ... she also said to me she feels at peace.   And it is visible in her.  She has a peace that is beyond normal understanding.   After weeks of shock,  grief, mental torture, nightmares... this place is really heavenly.

Because of Andy I watched The Chosen and now I have run out of episodes to watch (until more is released.)  I have some sermons he was watching and as I think of the names of the preachers he liked the most I have written them down.   At one stage I remember telling him that although they are old to try watching Billy Graham sermons.   He did and he loved them!   I have been watching testimonies of some of the actors and crew of The Chosen who have given their lives to God as a result of being involved.  These have been beautiful too.   I really like Phil Robinson... so I might watch The Blind.  If you have any good Bible studies,  Christian movies, series... please share.  I know my mind works in such a way that it needs to be fully occupied on goodness.   If you don't care for Billy Graham or Phil Robinson that is ok... just don't watch them!

I have a friend who has lost her eyesight.  She can see but not much.  None the less she has the most sparkly happy eyes I have ever seen.  She is just joyful.  And it seems like she is always joyful!  I want to be like her.

If you feel happiness and contentment because you added to the pantry,  grew something,  preserved something, made something.... or because your babies ate dinner and are tucked up in bed or the soup turned out well...  these are wonderful things.   With gratitude we do appreciate them so much.

There is a lot to be said about basics.  Like buying basic ingredients for the pantry.  Ingredients give you many options, as Cath says.    Simple meals are honestly just as good as fancy ones.  Basic ingredients do not have a list of crazy chemicals and numbers... a tomato is just a tomato.  Hopefully.     A tray of brownies is just as good (if not better) than an expensive basket of store bough Easter chocolates.    Or a chocolate cake...  or anything that you are good with baking.    I even love my basic dogs.  They are not an expensive breed or anything they are just mutts that needed a home.  I am happy with my old kitchen and fifty year old stove.   Actually more than happy I love them!

Do you know people who just suck the joy right out of you?  Don't let anyone steal your joy!  Determine they cannot.  This is not to say we don't give company to the lonely,  sympathy to the grieving etc...  it is about the people that are always glum no matter what.  They would complain if they won the lottery.  They complain it is a nice day.  They complain about everything.   Do you sometimes come away from somewhere or someone and you think "why am I feeling so bad?" because you actually don't have anything in particular to feel bad about. You just caught it from someone lol.

We can't be content and joyful all the time (I am grateful I feel it at all)  but keeping a gratitude journal and keeping my mind on good things and learning is helping me heaps.   I have many things to add to my grateful list tonight.

I promise next week to have a basics post on something money saving that we can make. xxx

  1. What a beautiful post.
I'm thankful you shared it with all of us.
The world has become a greedy, self centered, self aggrandizing place.
People have no peace in their lives.
They are constantly in search of the next expensive thrill. There is much to give thanks for

A roof over your head, family and friends, a good meal.

  2. I couldn’t agree more Annabel. I love the simple pleasures of a vase full of freshly cut flowers from the garden, fruit and veggies growing, home cooked meals, the satisfaction of having done some deep cleaning, a plant in flower, these all float my boat!! You are such an inspiration Annabel, you are doing so well, my best wishes to you and your familyxxx

  4. Annabel, you are finding your new path and doing it so well.
Part of being joyful is being content. If one is not content, there is no joy. Our world today keeps shoving the idea we need more, we need new, we need the best.
I prefer to sit out in my sun room and watch the deer or turkey in my backyard than going on elaborate vacations. God gives us such beauty in our world, we just need to slow down and see it all.
Being joyful of our accomplishments is so important if just for the sake of self esteem. Even if it is cleaning our home, creating something, growing something. Even just finding a bargain at the store. We need to celebrate what God has helped us do.

I love seeing my house all clean and smelling clean, it is as satisfying as possible, I think of how God feels when He washes away our sins. He is probably standing there smiling.

Prayers your new path in life goes well, Love.

  5. Dear Annabel, oh gosh I LOVED this so much. Thank you for bringing so much joy to others; even when you are going through the hardest of times. What an angel you are. I couldn't quite believe this post. Sometimes I find it hard to believe what people are doing around me....and it's all 'normal'. I hate going to the hair dresser and being asked, what have you been up to? Overseas trips are normal for my son's classmates (8 years old!). So are capital city trips and big concerts. I reflected on what was a great day when I was a kid....a trip to the beach with my Mum and Dad and dog, a bbq at the beach, riding my bike in the street and having a homemade roll, talking to Mum and having a milo, reading a book with a cozy blanket, spaghetti, followed by ice cream. But I sometimes lose all of this as an adult and feel like I am constantly at misstep with people my own age. I feel like I don't fit in. Thank you for this post, because I must focus on the words from Philippians 4. This is what I need to pray on, and you are right it is what I need to keep focused on. I will re-read this in the next few days and will take notes, thank you. You have given me such sunshine and when I couldn't see it, thank you. Lots of love, Bridget

  6. Annabel, thank you! Up well before dawn in the Arizona mountains, reading this post as I waited for the coffee to finish brewing, your words and pictures provided a beautiful start to a good day. Such simple inspiration. We have a fresh layer of snow on the ground. It's so very quiet. Even the roosters are still sleeping. You've given me so many good things to think about today and remain in my prayers. --Elise

  8. For the past several months, I have gotten up early so I can spend time listening and studying with John MacArthur of Grace to You Church; GTY.org. His sermons are amazing as he studies each book of the New Testament and several Prophetic books from the Old, one verse at a time. I have learned so much.
My daily prayer is for a hungering and thristing for His word, for help in living my life according to His will. He has answered those prayers by guiding me to your site so I can journey with you as you study, learn and praise Him.
It took me years before I finally understood that my son was right where he had to be. He was a believer as a child. I'm so glad you have that comfort also, knowing Andy is with our Lord.
This world has become a crazy place but studying the book of Revelation gives me peace knowing our Lord is in complete control. Linda

  9. Dear Annabel,
I am so happy to read this post and to feel the peace and contentment that emanates from your soul. Our only source of true peace is Hashem and Yeshua. All else does not compare. Your advice about contentment, gratitude, joy and setting a "good day" goal to reach is very wise.
The world and, often, people we have to be around bombard us with negativity. For many people isolation is their only escape.
For others, they count it all joy, knowing Hashem has a purpose for all things in our life. Our growth is contingent on learning lessons; sometimes, very painful lessons, for sure.
Sending you a big hug and much love,
    Glenda

  10. I am so glad to read that you are finding joy. It is such a comfort to read your posts and comments and know that I am not alone. Simple joys, family, friends, pets, nature, garden etc keep my husband and I happy. We can't compete with people who have the biggest new cars, exotic holidays etc. If they think we are dull that's tough! Our values are different from theirs and we will continue to live our happy low key lives.
Thank you again for sharing Annabel.

  12. Hi Annabel, thank you for such a lovely and inspirational post. I am so glad you are finding peace and joy in the things you are doing each day. Some days will be better than others, but all days are a gift, at least that's what I'm feeling lately. Health issues sometimes keep me from accomplishing "great things", but then, it's the simple, normal and mundane tasks that keep life flowing smoothly, right? Since the beginning of the year, I've been going to bed earlier (10:30 pm) and rising earlier (6:30 am) to spend time in Bible study and prayer. It's been a good thing. Some authors I've also enjoyed this past year have been Billy Graham, Charles Stanley, David Jeremiah, and Max Lucado. There are lots of YouTubes for each, too. (Charles Stanley passed last year, but his organization InTouch Ministries continues his work. ) I'm filling my mind with better things to combat all the negativity that bombards us daily. I appreciate all the lovely things you and the other Bluebirds share, too! Much love to you, Annabel!

I have a piece of paper on my fridge where I wrote out "A joyful spirit is the result of a grateful heart"to remind me to be thankful for the good things in my life when I get down and it always works. One of the things that I am especially thankful for is your blog, you are always so willing to share your wisdom, common sense and emotions about the things you go through, thank you. Here in Canada we have a Christian T.V. channel called The Miracle Channel,it also has a channel called CORCO that you can get on youtube. You might also be able to get The Pure Flix channel on the internet in Australia.

  14. I think this is a very important post on basics!!! Finding joy in the everyday is so necessary because what would we be like if we only went from peak to peak? The ordinary fills in the space between those peaks and are actually what makes life beautiful! ❤️❤️

  16. My friend posted this on Facebook and I love it. When I was going to Bible college, I worked in the kitchen. I was on the potato peeling squad. If we asked the head cook if we had to peel potatoes that day, she'd smile sweetly and say, "No, you GET to peel potatoes today." So the following generates to my very soul. : 0)

    How Gratitude Changes Everything
Instead of saying, "I have to," start your day with, "I get to."
    I get to exercise,
I get to see my friends & family
I get to tell someone I love them.
I get to eat good food.
I get to work and earn money.
I get to experience new things.
I get to make someone's day better.

    It's all about perspective.

  18. Another wonderful post Annabel. I make a nice hot cup of coffee when I see you have blogged & I sit down with it & read your post - this makes me grateful that I can do this simple thing. When I was going through a period of deep grief last year a friend bought me a really plain & simple, but pretty journal ... she told me to write 3 things each day that I am grateful for. It make me really look at things differently. I would be pegging out the washing & instead of my head spinning with all the chores I had to do, I would look up & think Oh how blue the sky is today. Or I would listen to the birdsong. I think they call it living in the moment but I just call it being grateful for what we have.
Regarding the folk that can just drain the pure joy out of anything brings me to mind of a verse I saw somewhere that said .... instead of worrying if the glass is half full or half empty, just be grateful that you have a glass & that there is something in it!!! Very true words. Wishing you a contentment filled week dear Annabel x0x

  19. I love your ideas of a good day. This week is spring break for our schools, and my son is at Disneyworld with the marching band. So many of the other parents went along. I'm happy for them, but we were not financially able to go. My husband and I have enjoyed being home alone together (the first time this has EVER happened, in the 20 years we've had kids). Many people were shocked when they found out we weren't going, but I just said we couldn't afford it and we're looking forward to spending time together at home. Last night we sat outside with the chickens, and tonight my daughter came home from college to spend the evening with us. We are loving every minute!
We enjoyed watching The Chosen as well. We've also watched some Drive Through History which is not a fictional story but very fascinating. My husband listens to a Christian podcast by Greg Laurie each day. It gives him such a positive outlook on the day. He used to watch old Billy Graham sermons, too. I'm grateful that my husband is a godly man. Even if the messages teach different doctrine or Biblical perspective than we believe, it's still uplifting and good to think on the Lord.

  21. Many good mentions on preachers and teachers already. I really like my Bible app on my phone. It can read the Bible to you, you can read the words yourself, and it has a multitude of Bible studies you can do. If I wake up in the night, one comfort is to program God's Word to read aloud for awhile.

  22. I have people I know who travel widely, spend easily who ask me what I have been up to and I feel like I should come up with something magnificent too! Then I am annoyed at myself as I have no need to feel this way as I am very happy and content. I love this post as I can related to the sentiment so well. Much love to you and thank you for posting this.

  24. Dear Annabel, such a beautiful post. I call Chloe a miracle worker! I get too caught up in worldly expectations and get myself so confused at times. Your posts help me so much - I wish I could print your whole blog. For me seeing washing drying on the line, getting it back off and all folded neatly away in one day is a good day. Just this evening a very beautiful blue kingfisher crashed into my window - luckily he was just stunned. I picked him up in a towel and sat him on a table on the verandah and was very grateful to see him fly off half an hour later. Today I am also very grateful to have turned the corner and feel my fuzzy head dissolve after a week of covid. Love Clare

  25. Lovely post! Practicing gratefulness is a very basic skill.
I so needed to hear your reminder to not let some people "steal your joy". I thought of that song we learned as children, This Little Light of Mine. "Won't let Satan blow it out, I'm gonna let it shine..."
I told my husband how thankful I am for all we have. Especially our children, they are so good to us and each other. God gave me a bonus, this week, to add to my gratitude list: 6 chicks that I hatched. The incubator was a birthday gift from my 15yr old. Spending her hard-earned $ on me!
Thanks for blessing us, Bluebirds, Annabel. You are sharing the results of our prayers!

  26. Dear Annabel,

What a beautiful post. I am so happy to hear that St. Paul's advice is working so much good in your life!! I need to take his words seriously, too! Just look at the result!

I love to listen to our Christian radio station throughout my day. I am not in love with the music style (contemporary), but for the most part the lyrics are great...certainly better than mainstream radio! But I love to listen to all the teaching programs and sermons that they air each day. Some of them have been mentioned already in previous comments, but I also really enjoy Back to the Bible Canada with Dr. John Neufeld, Encounter the Truth with Jonathan Griffiths, and Truth for Life with Alistair Begg. All of these are truly biblically based and I enjoy the Bible exposition and teaching that arises. They are all available online.

I love the photo of your gorgeous flower bed with the rocks that Andy placed there for you. Beautiful.

    Lots of love to you,

I pray for you often Annabel.

When my Nana and grad dad and aunty were alive being in their small house or on the balcony with a beautiful set table and simple soup and salad made my heart sing ! Now their gone I feel so depressed and it's hard to say that. I am trying to find joy in the small things. My dog brings me joy ! Love Sonia

  31. Dear Annabel,

This is a wonderful post - very uplifting and to me a beautiful example of being the light in the world. I needed to read this today!

This is a very small recommendation but I love Bible Verse of the Day. I can get to it on my phone wherever I am, whatever time of day (very important lately) and have a daily devotional. There is a new verse, a minister's thoughts on the verse, and a prayer each day. It has really brought me some comfort and given me important things to think about.

  32. Dear Annabel,
So thankful to read how you are going, all you achieve; and how you keep stepping through your days. Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability. Your quiet attempt to keep focused on what truly matters and order your days accordingly, is a huge encouragement to me. Even so, grief is grief: Don't be hard on yourself for being tired or "lost" at times. God is ever present with His sustaining love.
I have had many people question the validity of my "at home" life. I've been blessed to live this way for 40+ years. Comments sting at times.
Presently, I'm trying to master GF Sourdough baking and pickling techniques to extend the fridge life of veggies.
Psalm 91 is a favourite to meditate on. When I'm away from home I sleep with my Bible open at that place. A great comfort.

  33. I enjoyed your post! What a breath of fresh air! I have been listening to Dr. Charles Stanley for over 20 years. He did pass away a couple of years ago but the In Touch ministry program is online, and they have a 24 hour, 7 day a week radio ministry that I still listen to as well as video messages. He has taught me more than anyone in my life ever has. Many nights I listen to his teaching through the night, many of his lessons I remember from difficult times I have known.
Billy Graham is an excellent preacher. His lessons are sound. I am glad you are being encouraged through good teaching. That is such a blessing. As you are to so many of us. Ann Austin

  34. I really needed to hear this message today. I often find myself allowing my husband who has Parkinsons/dementia steal my joy. This weekend, I stopped my chores and said a quick prayer and found that I was able to enjoy the weekend. I really have to focus constantly to keep from having my husband drain me of my energy and joy. I have to remind myself he is not doing it on purpose- it is the disease and not him. I also remind myself I am grateful he is still with me.
    Thank you so very much!!

My youngest son is home from hospital and although he has a serious condition which is not curable he is alive, and I thank the Lord every day. A good day here is the when the dishes are done, beds are made ready for the evening and the animals and humans are fed a home cooked meal. God is good!

Thank you also for the recommendations and I love reading other Bluebirds testimonies.

If you want 2 more good Pastors to watch on YT, one is Alistair Begg (Scottish pastor who has a church in Cleveland OH, USA) and my personal pastor, Jesse Randolph of Indian Hills Community Church in Lincoln NE. Both have sound teaching from God's word.
