A new month! And for us the last weeks of winter have arrived. We had several days that felt like early spring and there are signs everywhere... blossoms on all the fruit trees and wattle flowering. I have enjoyed winter so much and hope to make the most of the last of it. I am thinking now of planting and have determined to try quite a few new things and try and not re do the things that did not work last year. I had more and success with veggie gardening in raised beds and big containers and will continue on with what was working.
We cannot buy GreenStalk planters here unless we are prepared to pay over $1000 each. Last year I bought small stack planters but they are only an eighth of the size of a GreenStalk and they are ok for some herbs but just not big enough overall. I have found an Aussie company making something bigger and similar to GreenStalks and I ordered two. When they arrive I will set them up and report what I think. These will be for various lettuces and salad greens.
I did a heap of work on my fridge and put all my "keep veggies fresh" containers into work. I also have a pattern and design for some veggie bags that are three layers of cotton that you keep damp... when I make those up I will test them and report on how they go!
Tiredness really got me this week so I got more sewing and less big things done. I made up Gumnut 2 and 3! Now I am enjoying them. I am using only fabrics and trims I have and just need to buy stuffing and eyes. Each one is different and I have a few more cut out. The one I am working on now is a pink and floral girl Koala with a flocked leaf and pansy decoration. So it is really fun.
When there is less light in the evenings (and I can't see what the heck I am doing) I crochet! I love that too. I think having something you really enjoy to work on is so good.
My use it up baking took care of a dozen oranges. I made two huge Orange cakes. This recipe is on my old blog The Bluebirds are Nesting and called Winter Sunshine Cake. It can be make up as muffins. I think it maybe should be called Vitamin C cake as each took 6 oranges and lots of eggs too!
I used the very last orange juice to make the icing.
My other baking was a couple of trays of Tuna Mornay.
I have reviewed my seed collection and have a couple of types of pumpkin seeds drying on the kitchen window shelf. In the garden my celery, silverbeet, parsley and spinach are all growing.
I wish I had written down last year what happened with my celery. I know I planted it in winter and in Spring and into Summer it was a mile high and I harvested continually huge bunches. I just hope this year it works out the same!
In the pots and raised beds there are loads of little self sown seedlings coming up. These are Parsley...
In another spot I have hundreds of tiny baby cherry tomatoes. When they grow a bit I will move some around to empty pots and spaces. They know it is nearly Spring and it's their big chance!
I kept on working on my cupboards and organising. Today I gave Chloe the royal tour and I thought wow for all that work I don't have a lot to show. (Although I am still admiring my shelves and fridge!) You kind of have to see the before to appreciate the after! BUT I much better know what I have, how many I have, where things are located .. and I created a lot of space. When I cleaned on top of the fridges and freezers I found a huge tin that was empty. Fill those empty containers! I washed it up and now it is full of bags of flour.
On marketplace I saw a huge and ornate old cupboard. Like all my dreams come true in a cupboard! I made an inquiry and next thing I had a deal! This is going to be an ordeal for Andy and whoever else I can rope in to help as it is enormous. I am going to use it as a storage cupboard/extended pantry/utility cupboard or some combination of these. So my plans for next week are shaping up... filling the new garden containers, shifting seedlings, filling my new cupboard...
In our news we had more financial warnings such as "RBA's major warning of economic carnage" and I really noticed a big increase in social media posts where people were asking for help and advice on how they could get through the week with the ingredients they had. Some had no pantry at all to draw from. A pantry is more important than a holiday, more important than a party, more important than the weekly lotto ticket or coffee!
How did you build up your home, garden or pantry this week? We love to hear!
Thank you to everyone for the amazing comments on the Nana post on Tuesday. We came up with so many things to use leftovers and waste nothing! xxx
Gumnut pattern... it is available in the files section of this group
Animal Rescue Craft Guild. We printed the patten A4 but I found it very fiddly to make so now I make a bigger version which is so much easier! xxx
I just love those koalas a great present for little ones, even I would love one. Did you have a pattern you followed. I would definitely love to make one.x
ReplyDeleteI have posted a link into the post now for the Koala pattern. xxx
DeleteDo you have a pattern for the koalas I’d love to make them too
ReplyDeleteYes I have posted the link now in the post.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteThe Gumnuts are so darling. You are such a talented lady.
Not much new to report as far as productivity. I did continue on sorting through old magazines and books and donated quite a lot. I started on the cookbooks, but got sidetracked reading recipes. Can anyone relate or is it just me?
I still have much left to do, but some health issues are deterring me right now. Monday, our grand daughter, who is headed to college, asked to come spend the day with us and we are thrilled. She is such a blessing. All our grandchildren bless us.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
Love and hugs,
Glenda
Dear Glenda, Thank you so much. I am so glad you get to spend a day with your Grand daughter! I know you will just love that. I also just keep the pages I want of a magazine and most cook books. I have only half a dozen whole cook books. I hope you have a good new week! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI was so glad of my pantry when Covid hit and things disappeared overnight from the shops. I know that some people really do live hand to mouth, but anyone who has a chance to put anything by 'just in case' should do so.
ReplyDeleteDear Tracy, I am still amazed how fast things happened, how fast things disappeared! I have never seen anything like it before in my life. I had a couple of hundred masks when masks were completely unavailable too. Each week I work on my pantry! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteHello Annabel and Bluebird Friends,
ReplyDeleteI love the Koala babies! Some lucky children will hug them all day long (or maybe all night long...) You are so talented!
In your part of the world Spring is around the corner and that will bring you the wonderful energy to take care of plants.
We started to feel Autumn is around the corner, although the heat is unbearable some days. But you know, the slight shift of the light, the golden sunsets, the different songs of birds and crickets and the harvest, of course.
I am not very happy about my agricultural result or the fruits from the orchard, it is less then I expected, and is a good lesson to not rely on one thing only. Somehow corn, potatoes and beans are not producing well and the apple trees and the cherry trees had zero fruits. I am waiting for the rest of the plants (the grapes and the tomatoes are wonderful). I still have lots of dehydrated apples in the cellar from last year. And I am lucky to have a fresh local market - I have bought green beans at a good price at the end of a day, I went after work and the seller wanted to go home so good price it was.
From the first of August I record on a notebook every day what I put away, like Jessica*s #everybitcountschallenge. From more raspberry leaves and mint for winter teas to cat food or green beans in the dehydrator, every thing is put away for harder days. I also made a batch of sour cherry liqueur and one of blueberry liqueur. It will be good for winter holidays and also as gifts. I won*t put pictures as I am the odd one anyway - all I hear around me is ^*where do you go on vacation? Greece? Turkey? Italy? - Oh, nowhere?! ^*
On the first of August we always celebrate our very first date (28 years ago this year), only this time our son took us out for an ice cream and we bought got presents from him, summer shoes for his dad and cute summer sandals for me. Now that was a big and unexpected surprise. Life is made of little precious moments!
Enjoy the weekend, have fun and make the most of it. Lots of love from Laura_s_world from Romania
How beautiful of your son! Congratulations on your Anniversary. Love Lily
DeleteThank you very much Lily. He is a teenager and he is proud of his summer job money. Have a nice weekend! Love from far away, Laura
DeleteDear Laura,
DeleteWe both can feel the change in the air. When I lived nearer some markets I used to go half an hour before closing time. It seemed odd, I was going in when everyone was coming out. But oh my goodness I used to get boxes snacks boxes of amazing deals, as you say they just didnt want to take stuff home again and the very last they got rid of by grouping things into one box for an incredible deal and things like this. So if you can go these times it might be amazing what you can get.
I love Jessicas everybitcountschallenge and the whole idea of it! It is great to record what you did each day. The liqueur sounds amazing!
This is so beautiful that your son took you out and made a celebration for you! That is just lovely! With much love Annabel.xxx
This week my quilting business has kept me busy- 10 quilts I’ve quilted up for clients in less than 10 days! While this isn’t building up my pantry directly, it IS bringing in a tidy side income that make it easier to pay for some home repairs and pantry building!
ReplyDeleteI made a chocolate zucchini cake using garden zucchini I shredded. I had clearanced pie crust dough in my fridge, so I made 6 individual Turkey pot pies (using leftover frozen Thanksgiving Turkey). I kept 2 pot pies for Dave & me and packed up the other 4 into recycled takeaway and grocery containers, packed up 3 cartons with 4 slices of the cake and 3 cartons with homegrown tomatoes and off we went! We delivered 1 package of pot pie, cake and tomatoes to a widow who was recovering from heart surgery, 1 package with 2 pot pies, cake and toms to a couple where husband has ongoing debilitating health problem and the last pack to a recently widowed friend. Each drop off was unannounced. We spent about an hour visiting at each of the 3 stops. And we were overwhelmed at how abundantly blessed we are to have enough and to share!
I froze more strawberries and jalapeños. Made a delicious cold pasta salad using diced ham from freezer and other bits of dressing and veg to use up things I had. It’s been fun seeing just how many things we can make with our pantry.
All in all, a good week!
Gardenpat in Ohio
Dear Pat, Oh goodness, a quilt a day is a lot! Business is booming! I think a side gig is so good and yes it benefits every area of the budget really.
DeleteYour produce, baking and delivery service sounds just beautiful. I am sure you helped and cheered up each recipient. That was a busy and wonderful week! With love Annabel.xxx
I am excited to see your new cupboard!
ReplyDeleteI am seeing so many on social media asking for food or where the food banks are located. There are also perfectly able bodied people on street corners begging. It seems society has forgotten how to take care of themselves or has lost the will to do so. They are only seeking what they need for today and are not motivated to look toward the future. This is sad and will not improve if people are not made to stand on their own feet and take care of themselves like they did before Covid.
We had some delicious meals using up what was in the fridge. It is amazing what a few small amounts of produce can become. Our huge deal at the grocery store was six one a half pound packages of bacon for $3.35 each! One day we had a nice lunch out and ice cream after for a total of $3.85 which is how we roll around here!
Enjoy your weekend!
This was Lana. Hubby went to the dump today and the lady next to him offered him three boxes of canning jars! Thank you!
DeleteDear Lana, This is funny as I am just reading what you have said and I have just written a post on exactly this. Great deal on the bacon. And yes we can make really good meals with a. bit of this and that and be inventive. I am saying yes yes yes to everything you said! With love Annabel.xxx
Deletedear annabel, those koalas are so cute done up in velvet. i am trying to get our granddaughter to make some of those crocheted flowers. she crochets beanies for orphanages and i thought they would go well on them. here in southern pa. we are blessed to have so many farms and farmers markets and discount groceries. i really try to take advantage of them to help stock up, plus my garden. yesterday we canned green beans and today we are picking up 150 ears of corn to freeze. guess what i'll be doing the rest of the day and tomorrow? it is starting to get dry here again. hopefully we'll get some more rain in the comming days. hope your week goes well. enjoyed the post on using up what you have. i even did this as a teen, we would get hand-me down clothes from friends and i would take them apart and make something new. it was fun. blessings to you all. bonnie
ReplyDeleteDear Bonnie, Thank you so much! You might team up with your granddaughter like Mum and I do... she makes the hats, I do the flowers and sew them on. They do make the girls hats very sweet. Pom poms are an option for the boys ones.
DeleteGood job on the beans! And all that corn! That is amazing! You are possibly still working on that! Have a great new week to you too! With love Annabel.xxx
“A pantry is more important than a holiday, more important than a party, more important than the weekly lotto ticket or coffee!” THIS!
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes we have to get our priorities straight! xxx
DeleteI LOVE your koalas. I do wish you would open a store. I think it would do very well.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Anne that I very kind. If I was to open a store I couldn't continue the blog or help with my Grandchildren or about a thousand other things but it is a nice compliment! xxx
DeleteDear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteHello again from Florida!
Well I certainly envy your bonanza of free seedlings! There is such promise in seeds and seedlings! I just get giddy when some seedings really take off! This year it was first snapdragons and after that, moss roses (portulacas) that have been spectacular! From seed!!!! Still blooming but getting mealy bugs that only deadheading will do! But so beautiful !! I’m so proud of myself! Still too hot to really plant just yet.
Found out all electrical in utility room done wrong by handyman in the past. Must get It completely rewired at $$$. Terrible timing but at least we have an empty credit card to put it on!
Groceries still crazy but lots of BOGO’s! You just have to watch! Was shocked by sweet corn at .89 an ear! Luckily it was BOGO but no thanks!! Also Starfruit (do you grow that in AU?) are $2.89 EACH!! Shameful!! Even the printing paper over $10.00/ream!! But shank ham @ .99/lb and 80% ground beef @ $3.99 lb.
Your koalas are so cute! And that orange cake with chocolate sauce drizzled over! Yum!! And I can’t wait to see your new cupboard! Perhaps it has some fancy edging?? Victorian, maybe! But still a dream!
Used to have China’s Forbidden City on my bucket list but now it’s a day with you, Op shopping and one of your cakes, tea, and conversation!! What fun ! (for me!)
All our best to all the Bluebirds and to you, dear Annabel,
With Love,
Rick and Donna
XOXOXOXO
Dear Rick and Donna,
DeleteI have been looking after the seedlings as it has been sunny so Im watering them and shifting some as they are too thick. Filling lots of pot. Well done on the beautiful Snapdragons! I love the colours of them.
Great there are deals around. Rick stock that pantry!! Like you never have before!
Well you are on the right track about the cupboard! So much so I had to laugh! It is arriving shortly... a big job to move, Andy has a friend helping him and they have two trailers!
Thank you re my Koalas and cakes. Yes we could have a very fine time op shopping and having afternoon tea! Thanks so much, with love Annabel.xxx
I just love your Gumnut Koalas! So cute and they look easy to make. Thank you for sharing. This post reminded me that I need to clean out my fridge too, and especially my freezer! No telling what treasures are in there LOL
ReplyDeleteDear Kathy,
DeleteThank you! The fridge needs constant attention. It is so nice when done though! I am also working on freezers. Chest freezers are quite hard to keep track of what ends up at the bottom! I am trying to rotate through them! Have a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
ReplyDeleteHello Annabel and everyone,
Oh Annabel, those koalas are so cute! I just love them. It astonishes me that the Greenstalk planters are so expensive where you are. I hope you have great luck with the Aussie version you ordered. Mine has made a huge difference in what I am able to grow and in my success rate. Your cake also looks delicious. We are the same this week, with furniture finds - a lady in a neighboring town has a gorgeous hutch that I am hoping to bring home next weekend for more storage! Fingers crossed it works out.
It has been a quieter week here, too - both at home and at work. My husband is doing a lot better this week! Super thankful for this and for all the prayers and good wishes for him. Finally I've caught up on the usual things (laundry, housecleaning, floors), and did a couple of small cooking sessions (chicken broth, apple slice, spaghetti sauce). My cuttings got potted up and are doing beautifully (apple mint, spearmint, and basil, a few of each), so I've started some more. The fridge and bathrooms got a deep clean, and I did a little shopping trip to the farm store to purchase some seeds on a great sale - some flowers and herbs for next year, though I may do a planter with chives this year still. Lots of flowers on my melon plants and we are harvesting squash now. Yesterday I made a batch of soaps (lavender, rose, and citrus) for the gift cupboard, and some pretty gift tags. One Christmas cross-stitch was finished, and I've put a few stitches in another bee-themed piece.
The seals on two of the sidelights on our rear bay window have begun to fail, probably from the heat - they are about 14 years old, so have had a good useful life. A local contractor came out to give an estimate on replacement for that and also one to extend the patio to give me some more level growing space for containers (our yard has a slope and we also have buried utility lines, which is convenient, but limits where I can dig). He has done beautiful work for us in the past and it will be nice to have repairs made and some more room for plants.
Numerous times I have been so grateful to have our pantry and freezers, and the wisdom of all of you ladies to draw on. Even a little bit helps! It all adds up.
I hope everyone has a good weekend.
<3
Kathy
Dear Kathy, You are one of the people making want the GreenStalks so much! Becky on Acre Homestead, she had hers looking incredible too! I am waiting for my Aussie substitutes and hoping!
DeleteWe are on the same page with the storage! A hutch would be great! Right now I am waiting for Andy and his friend to get here with the cupboard! Then I can assess the new space I have!
I am so glad to her your husband has been doing well! That is so nice to hear!
it is really handy you have someone you have used before the you trust to do the work for you on the window and patio. The way you have kept your freezer well stocked I know this has helped when the weeks have been much more difficult. You have done a great job with that. Even a quieter week for you is still a very productive one! With much love Annabel.xxx
The koalas are so cute. Yes, I’m anxious to know how your veggie bag work out for you. I am getting a box of peaches to can tomorrow. I love home canned peaches and also getting a dozen corn on the cob so I’ll be freezing those. Went to the supermarket the other day and was able to get canned peas for $.69 a can and it was a great brand. So stocked up on some for winter. My neighbor is bringing me fresh tomatoes, squash and hot peppers from her garden. I’m not much into eating fresh tomatoes but I liked cooked tomatoes so I’m freezing them for winter.
ReplyDeleteTake care bluebirds. Love reading what everyone is preserving and crafting.
Thank you! I just love peaches too! Also the corn and the tinned peas are get to get! The lovely veggies from your neighbour will give you lots of possibilities too. Thank you so much! xxx
DeleteI’m loving the family of Gumnuts! Beautiful work Annabel. The orange cakes looks delicious too. I always wish I had taken ‘before pictures’ when doing jobs like cleaning cupboards! Nobody seems to appreciate them cleaned quite as much as I do lol. Good luck to Andy with your new cupboard!!
ReplyDeleteMy big achievement of the week was moving a bed out of our house and giving it to a friend who is setting up a new house. It was like a puzzle trying to fit it all in to my vehicle, but I managed and drove it over to her. She was really happy with it and we were happy to give it so it was a win-win. I’m really working at finding better homes for things we no longer need. I dropped six boxes of things at an op shop, and spoke to a mum from school whose daughter I younger than mine and from now on I’ll give any clothing hand me downs to her.
I had such great luck with school uniform this week. I bought five items for $14 including shipping. The shipping was more than the items! When they arrived the seller had also included two more pairs of shorts. I was blown away. So each item cost less than $2. It will literally save us hundreds of dollars.
I hope you have a relaxing weekend, can’t wait to see the new members of the gumnut family next week!
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen,
DeleteThank you! I took before photos and a video of the cabin/little house we fixed up. It was so gross it was scary to go in. Yikes that was bad! But my cupboards well... they are a challenge too!
It sounds like your friend was very happy to get that bed. Also to meet someone to pass down clothing to. As I read this I thought I bet now you will also be given things and have good finds and you did! You did incredibly on the school uniforms! That is actually amazing!
Have a good new week Jen! With love Annabel.xxx
Gum nuts are adorable. Your orange cake looks so yummy So right about the pantry. Covid should have taught us all that.
ReplyDeleteWe had week of grand son,
Mr 6 this week. He is very nice and sweet. Fortunately he loved playing with his 3 yr old cousin. And picking the tomatoes and peppers that were ripe. I hope to can more this weekend when cooler temps prevail!! Last couple of days have had me crocheting hot pads (6) for daughter s job- case manager at health facility. her town of 25000 had the highest number of homeless in the state earlier this year, many of her clients fit that category. . She is flooded with teaching people to cook basics, how to do laundry, how to buy groceries in a budget, etc. . The increase in food prices is a serious concern for her clients so she is very aware. The facility also houses a food bank and clothing / household center as people are in great need. She has cleaned out her house always reminding me we are so fortunate many are in need of the basics. She pressed me for more hot pads and dish towels. No more yarn or batting type fabric for centers.
SO. Got on social media made a group of old friends near where our daughter lives (we live 5 hours away now) and asked for help for any household items , clothing and especially kitchen linens We are planning a trip out that way in a couple of weeks. Looks like we ll need to take a pickup those friends are responding Keep us motivated and enjoy planting a garden
I just love how you put the word out and got such a great response! I am happy there are people wanting to learn cooking washing etc. People who want to learn are great to work with. People who dont want to learn ... they are hard to work with! It sounds like your Grandson had a lovely visit! I hope your daughter is inundated with useful and helpful items and maybe some other forms of help as well!xxx
DeleteLove your koalas, Annabel!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jill!xxx
DeleteYour stuffed koalas are so adorable!
ReplyDeleteWishing you well on your seedlings and new cupboard. Thanks for the challenge of using up every bit.
I made yogurt, chicken broth, fresh baked goods. We enjoyed free zucchini, cucumbers, banana peppers, and melons from gardeners or farmers that had too much. Also gifted with a tremendous bag of spinach. My basil is doing well and I will make pesto tomorrow. I found a yogurt bagel recipe on Instagram. The family loves them! I try to add a bit of fresh ground wheat to each batch.
We also put our house on the market in hopes of moving to a safer area. We continue with our adoption but have hit some snags as our caseworker had a loss. So we will be assigned to a new caseworker. Still waiting to meet our girl!
Blessings to all,
Leslie (Ohio)
Dear Leslie,
DeleteAll that produce sounds just beautiful! I hope you will get a very good price for your house and find something just right for your family. How old will your little girl be? How exciting! Yet each day must seem like forever. I hope the new case worker will get things moving for you. With much love Annabel.xxx
I had time on my hands this week and took moments to organize and sort my pantry, then my deep freeze. I take time every Sunday to sit down in front of the fridge and take account of what we have in there and then make plans for eating it up! This week I noted that the excess of all the vegetables my son gave us from school lunch program were taking up a lot of space. I flash froze the baby carrots and ended up with a gallon bag in the freezer. I took packets of broccoli and blanched them. My grandson decided he wanted apples and I was happy I'd dug about and found six or seven in the fridge that I didn't realize were there.
ReplyDeleteI went into the grocery store and they had marked down some items that were beyond the 'best by' date. Those dates don't bother me on most basic goods. Boxes of rice for instance. Rice is good for years! The seasoning packets inside are what really might expire. Enchilada sauce in cans. I got what I wanted and brought home to help stock my pantry.
I made a whole roasted chicken and made up three meals easy peasy with enough leftovers to feed us three or four more times!
Most of my focus these days is on foods, with four in house the concern of feeding a family is always on my mind.
I walked outdoors this evening and looked over my little potted garden. I have tomatoes on four plants once again, the bell pepper are growing and the potatoes I'd planted. I have blooms on the egg plants. The herbs are going well. Next week I hope to plant some things for fall harvest: beans, beets, etc.
I replaced a potted plant on my porch with another. I love petunias but this last plant never formed a proper seed head. I noted that the white one I just bought does and I am collecting seeds for resowing. I have to get out in the yard and start collecting seeds from various flowers.
My daughter was in a store I visit infrequently and called to ask if I wanted anything. I had her check for 25 pound bags of flour and got her to pick up a couple. If she goes back anytime this month, I have two more empty buckets and can easily store more.
News reports here for crop failures that will lead to higher prices: peaches. The south was hit hard with a 90% loss of peach crops. Peaches are grown all over many US states but they are one of the main agricultural crops here in our area and up into South Carolina so we've felt that one hard.
Another blogger is reporting that news sources near her have said we might see an increase in flour and rice costs, sugar exports due to overseas sources not having fertilizers and crops.
In news that concerns me, our president has encouraged EPA to put hard restrictions on HFCs which is the fluid that helps Air conditioners stay cool. It will increase the cost of this by four or five times so that something that typically ran about $300 will now cost over $1000. They are targetting furnaces next...It almost feels we are being told that we too can live as communist Russians were forced to live. Freezing in winter and baking in summer.
Thanks for sharing Terri. You've encouraged me to go ahead and order my flour and sugar!
DeleteJesse in PA
Dear Terri, Great job and using things up and on the good deals. The dates on some things are so ridiculous. But they cause us to find some good markdowns!
DeleteTerri it I also here... gas appliances are targeted... they want everything to become electric while at the same time telling us we have shortages of electricity. Also the prices are shocking. So people might have electric but not be able to afford to use it. As far as I can see "we" as in ordinary people do not deserve heating, cooling, transportation... and it is widespread. However those with super yachts and private jets they can do no wrong lol. Communism is the right word I do believe.
Good job on the flour. Your garden sounds like it is going well. Everything we do adds up! With much love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, Gumnut 2 and Gumnut 3 are adorable. This week I had purchased a box of crumbed chicken tenders half price. (I missed the word "spicy" on the box). Oh dear, too too hot, very unenjoyable. Even made the nice vegies taste bad. I was disappointed. After reading your Nana use everything up post a thought popped into my head. I baked the remaining chicken tenders still in the freezer, I pulled all the crumbs off and cut the chicken into little bits. I got parsley from the garden and a sweet corn can from the pantry and some left over beans from the fridge and - Voila! I was so happy that it produced a very yummy chicken soup. While in the garden I saw and picked some rhubarb and stewed some with apple. My MIL had sent us home with some homemade cookies that she didn't want to eat as they were bland (she had missed an ingredient), I used them crumbled up over the top. I felt really proud of myself. The kitchen is not my easiest place so thankyou for the inspiration. Love to everyone for a good week,
ReplyDeleteClare
Dear Clare,
DeleteThank you! I was thinking straight away knock the crumbs off or dip them in yoghurt! Good job! I dont like anything too spicy either!
Great work on re purposing the biscuits! A crumb is a good idea! You did very well! The rhubarb and apple sound beautiful too! With love Annabel.xxx
Annabel thank you for the link to the Gumnut pattern. I also downloaded a couple of their crochet patterns. I have a lot going on right now so the crochet will have to wait a few weeks before I attempt them.
ReplyDeleteI am now the childcare provider for my daughters two boys, three days a week. Due to interest rate rises she has had to go back to work sooner than she expected. She is lucky enough to be able to do her 15 hours of work per week, at home. The pay for these hours pays their mortgage which really helps out. I get home both exhausted and am so grateful that I can assist. It is also a lot of fun playing all day with a 2yr old and a 4 month old.
At home I have a garden that is continuously providing us with lots of delicious veg for the table. The fluffy butt girls are giving us between 5 and 6 eggs per day. These provide meals and baking requirements for us, for family and for trading with friends and neighbours. I have planted more seeds and seedlings as I am pulling out veg that is coming to the end of its life. The fluffy butts see me in the garden and cluck their little heads off in the hope that I will toss something into their yard. No waste here.
In the sewing department I have completed one beach bag for one of the Grandies for Christmas. Each evening I continue to knitting a jumper for the youngest Grandson for his Birthday next year. I have half a sleeve to go and then it will be time to block the pieces and sew together.
It's Mum's 80th this week. I am taking down all the ingredients for a nice dinner and a chocolate mud cake with strawberries and cream for her Birthday Cake. She has some medical issues that are causing worry and depression. I am hoping that a visit and a bit of spoiling will lift her spirits.
Between an overnight visit to Mums, 3hrs away, and 3 days looking after the boys, I dont see much beyond the basics happening here at home. Bluey had a fall this week, and whilst he didnt do too much damage to himself, he is feeling sore and not able to do a lot. He is improving everyday so will be fine to leave at home when I head off to Mum's.
I hope everyone has a quiet and productive week ahead. Life is super busy good.
Dear Jane, I am sorry to hear that Bluey has had a fall. That just been scary for both of you. You’re a wonderful mother and grandmother to help care for the boys. This will help your daughter so much. My mum has helped me and I do not think there’s a better gift. I love what you are doing for your Mum’s birthday. Love Lily
DeleteSo sorry that Bluey took a tumble ! Hoping the soreness will leave him quickly, with no lasting ill effects! You are an amazing lady to take care of everyone the way you do, it is wonderful you are able to help your daughter work to pay her mortgage. Hope your Mum is lifted up by her cake and your attention. I always enjoy your sharing and get so many ideas from your posts! Bless you Jane!

Dear Jane, Your help with the boys is a big contribution and I can imagine you would be tired with everything else you do. But it is important work!
DeleteFive or six eggs a day is just fantastic. So are the things you are harvesting from the garden. I hope your Mum has a beautiful Birthday, I know you will make sure she does. Chocolate mud cake and strawberries sounds lovely. And I hope Bluey is feeling better each day and thank goodness he wasn't hurt badly and nothing was broken!
Safe travels! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, I love, love, love your koalas. They are beautiful and I’m starting to think I have never outgrown my love for soft toys and dolls. They are so sweet. I am looking forward to hearing about your planter. What a great idea about a new storage hutch. I think we have space for one of them…it’s a brilliant idea, thank you. We have had not an easy few weeks, with DH having some health worries (he will be ok) but we have some changes to make. This will leave me less time, but the basics will get done as will some crocheting. Plus mother, daughter and wife roles completed. That’s probably the most important. Dh is great with the garden and we have been eating well with our cucumbers and corn and rocket. I’ve picked nearly 20 passion fruit in the past couple of days. These will be eaten with yogurt for breakfast and made into a cheesecake. I bought a new dress, top, tshirts and sandals for the kids and a handmade soft toy for $15 love Lily
ReplyDeleteDear Lily,
DeleteThank you so much! I hope the health changes will help your husband. It is tough to make changes!
The garden is sounding fantastic! Passion fruit and yoghurt and cheesecake sounds amazing! Great deals on the clothing and sandals too! Have a good new week! Love Annabel.xxx
I'm wondering if anyone has had luck with seed saving Bok Choy seeds? My plants went to seed and I'd love to save them for next year's garden.
