Feather your Nest Friday, 4th November, 2022.
The week was a rollercoaster and we arrived in November! To me once it is November it is practically Christmas. I am so glad I got my cakes made and a lot of my gifts ready.
My very first batch is going to be Celery. I have three Celery patches in containers and it is going to seed. It has produced so much. I never harvested the whole head I just kept on cutting around the outside and it went on and on. Now it is finishing up but I can harvest a lot of good Celery still. Most of it is over a metre high.
This is a little boy. He crosses his paws and hangs on. It just melts my heart. Since being on the farm and actually having sheep I realised a lot about the Bible verses re the Shepherd and the sheep. If one is missing you are out there looking for that missing sheep! I actually found out what that felt like. Well, that was very illuminating. The love of an animal, especially a baby, is just so beautiful. They love you with their whole little hearts. 💗
I started the week with a big list of gaols. The freeze drier arrived! Then my work bench arrived! Andy took the trailer into town to pick them up. He had instructions to come home on the sealed road (the long way) and not the dirt bumpy road because I was worried... imagining some fiddly bit of freeze drying technology would shake loose and it would all go wrong.
The space was ready for the stainless steel bench to be set up. This alone was exciting as now I have a place for my appliances and I could get my dehydrator out of my pantry. But one step at a time... first the bench went in then the Freeze Drier was unpacked. I was so nervous about it hoping that it had made it here all in one piece. Lots came with the Freeze drier to get me going... from Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers to replacement oil and oil filter and so on. Once we were set up I was so excited.
I was very lucky a friend was here and he helped me figure out the technical stuff. It wasn't that bad but connecting the pump and what not were things I was a bit worried about. He is the kind of guy that actually enjoys putting stuff together.
We ran our test run and everything was fine.
Now I have trays of bread freeze drying which you do to remove any residue smells from manufacture. I am then ready to start preserving!
So the fun will begin! I am not one for naming "things" but the computer screen asks for a name. I considered this I named my freeze drier Becky. Watching Acre Homestead and seeing Becky use her freeze drier so much was a big factor in making this decision. Also if my freeze drier is anywhere near as hard working as Becky I will get amazing value from it. So Becky it is. I must comment on Acre Homestead and tell Becky this!
As you can see I have Lettuce finishing up as well and Thyme to harvest.
In other developments... by now you know I attract animals. Specifically orphan animals. This week I took on five orphan puppies. They were four weeks and three days old. There are mixed emotions with orphans. It is sad and distressing and it is rewarding and beautiful. If you are not successful it is just all awful. On Wednesday I had no time to get ready and take five babies. Andy and our friend set up a large puppy play pen enclosure with old carpet for the floor. I had milk formula in my animal pantry. Actually I also had bowls, blankets etc as well. I cannot tell you how often my animal pantry has saved the day. And so it began. Bedlam.
So far they are doing well.
Today I am more confident as the puppies are playing and messing around. They follow me along in hilarious drunken walking to go to the toilet on the lawn. They are as good as gold. They are smart too.
Each one gets cuddled and kissed. They are so sooky and cuddle up and make little nosies and smell like puppies... Like there is a beautiful (human) baby smell there is a beautiful puppy smell. I hope everyone in the world knows it as it is just yummy. Seriously they crack me up they are so mushy. Look at that little face.
Between the puppies and finding them homes it has been pretty hectic.
What else..
My stack planters are going pretty well. There are mainly lettuces and herbs in them.
I went and inspected the fruit trees. Both pear trees are covered in HUNDREDS of tiny baby pears!
Next week we will net these trees. The apple tree is not far behind as it just finished flowering.
I harvested more Broccoli.
The Guinea Fowl chicks (keets) were promoted to the outside world. They love it, I saw them sunbathing today!
I picked the hugest thistles for the chickens.
The pumpkins and zucchini plants have taken off and look good.
I have had zucchini look good before and never get any actual zucchini to pick but I am hopeful!
The ducklings are now "teenagers" and loving mud puddles.
So that was my week. I have a freeze drier, a great set up, more room in my pantry, five puppies and loads of produce to harvest!
I am really tired. I need a good nights sleep. Tomorrow Mum and I are heading south to see my daughter and her family. I am looking forward to the whole day!
How did you build up your nest this week? I love to hear. Wherever we are, whatever season we are in, our industry at home makes a big difference! xxx
We are truly half-way around the world from each other, but your posts make me feel like you are right next door. Thank you for being such an encouragement and example to all of us.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much MamaHen! It is just wonderful having friends in different countries, we are all really working together! xxx
DeleteI wish I was near, those puppies are adorable. It's nice to see another season when our leaves are almost gone here. Here, Fall has been beautiful though. I do wish for my garden back with the high price of produce though but we are figuring out ways around those high prices.
ReplyDeleteI love that set up you have for your appliances. Believe me my mind was racing thinking could I do that. LOL.
Dear Vickie, The high prices are really hitting us all it seems. Anyway we can grow ourselves is a big bonus. I just love Autumn is is my favourite season. I am loving having appliances out of cupboards... now I need to re arrange those since they are a mess. But it is progress! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteFor some reason I can't find the comment box? (Hi Vickie!:-) So, I hope it's okay to jump in on Vickie's note.
DeleteI wondered if you have ever used the netting before? We used it in our apple tree and I found a Blue Jay had his foot tangled in it. Thankfully he hadn't been there too long. So, now we have 2 fake large plastic owls. Honestly, no birds in our yard except a few hummers.
The whole week is so exciting Annabelle. I would love a freeze drier and your preparation room is making me green with envy. And the pups! What can I say! I know I don’t have to say it but enjoy yourself. It’s like Christmas has come early!
ReplyDeleteDear Sharyn,
DeleteThank you! Yes it is a bit like Christmas came early. On all fronts! There are not enough hours in the day is my main problem! Have a good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Annabel you are such a marvel! I loved all your stories from the week. The puppies are just precious and I love how the Lord has shown His great love for you through creatures. I feel the same. I hope the freeze drier is a smashing success. Here we're deep in apple season so I have been able to purchase seconds for $7.50 a half bushel. I've figured a half bushel is about 7 quarts of applesauce. I also plan to dehydrate some. Here we hear rumblings of no more diesel fuel but I guess we will see. We are doing our best with what we have! Blessings on you all. Love from Pennsylvania, Jesse
ReplyDeleteDear Jesse, Thank you so much! I love apple season. Here I pick a lot of roadside apples... apples are so useful and versatile. I dehydrated a lot of apples at the end of summer and they have been fantastic. I did enough apple puree for the year too which I really like. I am hearing about rail and diesel issues... I hope not but keep you're ears and ears open! With much love Annabel.xx
DeleteNice set up there. I would never have the room for a set up like that. Nice. Puppies are precious!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cheryl. I didnt think I had room but any spare room or dining area or anything is fair game. I dont know why I didnt have this re arrange sooner. But I am very lucky to have this space. The puppies are doing well! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteYou had a very busy week. I am so happy that your new freeze dryer arrived safely and you are pleased with it. The new table looks perfect for the appliances and freeze dryer.
The puppies are adorable. You have a heart of gold and that is a true blessing. It is a shame that some people don't follow the Bible on caring for the animals. There are, by far, too many heartless people these days. You are a light that shines brightly in a very dark world, my friend.
Our garden is finished for the year. We got four inches of snow yesterday and it is 27 degrees F here this morning. I am rather tired this year, so glad we can move on toward winter.
I canned pickled beets from an Amish recipe on an Amish blog. They were the best pickled beets I have ever eaten. Normally, I find them too acidic. This recipe is a perfect balance between vinegar and sweet.
I, also, finished dehydrating the pansies and calendula for skin creams and shampoo's this winter. The lavender was still blooming on Wednesday, when it was 60 degrees F, so I cut the remainder of that and dried it, also.
Have a very blessed weekend.
Much love,
Glenda
Dear Glenda, Thank you so much. You did so well with the garden and getting it all in before the snow. I love pickled beets! In summer that is something that we have pretty often.
DeleteThe Pansies and Calendula will be beautiful to have. Pansies are one of my favourite flowers. They are like happy faces. Lavender is lovely to have as well.
The puppies are doing well, cheeky and playing. So far so good. I just love them to bits.
I have my freeze drier loaded with that celery... some stalks were so long! The food processor made this all much easier and the slices consistent.... which will help with even drying. Having my first batch in makes me happy! Have a very good new week! With much love Annabel.xxx
What a beautiful set up you have put together for all your equipment! I love those stainless steel tables and yours makes everything so beautiful. Those puppies have the most adorable faces and I know what you mean about puppy smell! Have a lovely time with the grands today!
ReplyDeleteDear Lana, Thank you so much! Just today the puppies eyes have turned blue. I am amazed! I did have a beautiful time with my grandchildren and Mum and daughter. I hope you have a good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI just love opening my computer and seeing a new blog from you! Thank you for the puppy and duck photos, it must be amazing to help all these little ones grow up! Congratulations on your new freeze drier! And your stainless steel bench, oh my while I don’t yet want a freeze dried I sure would love that bench…but I don’t have any space for it! I use a long counter in the laundry room for my bread machine, instant pot and microwave. Now that I write that, I see I do have a bench already! Thanks again for your news and photos ;). Hilogene in Az
ReplyDeleteDear Hilogene,
DeleteThank you! I really like the sound of your laundry set up. A long counter is so useful and you have a good set up. It is about using the spaces we have the best we can! I know that having things out and ready to go will make them used much more. Have a good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Hello Annabel and lovely puppies. I adore them and I think the last image with the sweet face, big heart and darling hug is a keeper! Pleeeeaaaassssee
ReplyDeleteI love dogs, they are my fav. things in the world, and when in doubt I always say to myself Be the person your dog thinks you are!
Your week was grand - a lot of good things happening in the kitchen from now on - congratulations for your purchase. The ducklings grow so fast but they must be very funny - I wonder how one can do other chores than just stay, watch and play with such toys at home......
We had a good week, have been harvesting the grapes and it was amazing to work, talk and plan just the three of us under the yellow leaves, the purple fruits, golden rays of sunsets, kitten playing, dogs running and crows noises in the distance. I see beauty all around in this wonderful autumn. Now the homemade red wine is doing its magic in big barrels. Still processing quinces and have some more killos in the cellar even after I gifted to whomever want quinces(not many because there is work attached to them). We also made pickled cabbage or sauerkraut and I pickled some semi hot peppers stuffed with raw cabbage - it will be delicious.
Have a nice weekend and fun time with Mum and the girls. With much love, Laura_s_world from Romania
Dear Laura,
DeleteYour grape harvesting sounds like a fun and beautiful time! The wine sounds fantastic and I just love Quinces. Nothing has the scent of Quinces. You are EXACTLY right... the way I usually end up with Quinces is because others dont want to do the work. But really they are not much work. I scrub them and put them in the slow cooker then go from there. The cabbage and peppers sound great too. You did a lot! A good variety also! I adore the puppies and they have done well. Three are going to homes tomorrow! With much love Annabel.xxx
What an exciting development, I love your new workbench and the freeze dryer will pay for itself in no time, the amount of quality food you will be able to have on hand in a very small space will be phenomenal, better than superannuation seriously. I love how it has a name, you will be able to freeze a lot of your eggs too.
ReplyDeleteWhat’s your secret with celery growing, I’ve tried a few times and it’s slow and bitter, I must be doing something wrong , I’ve seriously had more but very modest success from growing from the leftover base planted from my store bought, but mostly leaves but I love those in cooking. Your puppies are so cute 🥰 , been too long since we’ve had a dog must get one for my old age, I have a cat but she is moody and I’m sure I see me having a fall in the future with cats , they seriously want to run in front of me all the time.
Do you spray your fruit trees? I have a peacherine tree choc full of fruit,it’s a dwarf variety but very nice harvest last year, my apples were dreadful last year , they looked good but were dry and sort of blighted inside, I’m new to this fruit growing, hopefully for better this year although everything is slower this year as it’s still strangely cool for where I live.
Looking forward to seeing all you do with your freeze dryer, you may just have to start you own YouTube channel Annabel. Enjoy your visit to your daughter.
Thank you so much. Already the freeze drier is working hard and I am amazed! And excited. Yes I must do some eggs...
DeleteThe only things with the celery were: in my large planters not the ground. Pretty decent soil. A handful of blood and bone per plant at planting. I had no proviso experience with it and we had a cool spring. I had planted it sometime in winter... but we dont get it very cold here.
I thin a dog is valuable. Even as a security measure.
No so far we have never sprayed fruit trees. Just water and pruning. It is strangely cool here and has been for the last two years.
Tomorrow I will have a report on the freeze drier and what Ive been doing. I am loving it! Thank you for your kind words. I am having time and energy issues... although currently the puppies take a lot of work. Otherwise a you tube chenille would be really fun! With love Annabel.xxx
What a week!!
ReplyDeleteI know you will get so much use out of your freeze dryer, it will pay for itself in no time! I love the space you have created for all your handmaidens, it looks so clean and organised.
Oh my those puppies! Talk about cuteness overload!!
Reading your post today and all the going on’s it made me realise just how farm girl you have become! All the animals, the gardens, the fruit trees! All your hard work has created a true homestead, and a busy beautiful life. Well done.
Dear Cheryl, Thank you so much. A homestead is what I wanted and we have it now. From fruit trees and chickens to my preserving set up! I love it!
DeleteIt has been another busy week and the freeze drier has been working hard! Many thanks, with love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel thank you for writing your blog. I have had a lot going on lately, mostly small things, but it has felt quite stressful. It is a haven to 'come here' to the blog. Thank you. I love, love, love your freeze drier set up. I am excited!! I love how it is set up on the stainless steel workbench, it looks so professional and I just know it will be well-used. I am excited to hear of your reports! I love your puppies....they are adorable. I love how that one is giving you a cuddle. My dog holds on like that, seeing their love gives me so much happiness. I love how you care for animals. Your produce is amazing. I love being out in the garden. We have had rain, it is lovely. I am going to make some Christmas gift bags on the sewing machine this weekend. lots of love, Lily
ReplyDeleteDear Lily,
DeleteThank you for such kind words. I hope things have been easier for you this week. Small stresses do add up and can feel like a lot.
I hope you enjoyed your time sewing. I find sewing/crafting very therapeutic! The puppies are going so well and three go to homes tomorrow! With much love Annabel.xxx
Congratulations on the new tool and celery harvest! Now I know why you needed a table. I've seen Jessica's on a cart, not realizing how big it was.
ReplyDeleteWow! You really have your hands full with animals. Those pups are adorable! They should be easy to sell. My daughter is a rabbit breeder and rehomes other people's bunnies too. It is helps pay for the feed costs for the ones we keep.
My kids and I enjoyed a trip to a local park picking crabapples. I have been making crabapple jelly this week. Yum! We enjoyed homemade bagels Thursday. It has been so long since I made them. Nothing like rising prices to prod one to get creative. I look at these challenging times as helping me with my homemaking skills.
Blessings to all you bluebirds,
Leslie
Dear Leslie,
DeleteI have found homes for the puppies so that has gone well. Yes I have had my hands full! It has been both beautiful and chaotic!
How great to be Abel to pick crab apples! Also I love bagels! Homemade and fresh like that would be so delicious! I think these are the things that save so much money at the same time as being like a treat.
Thanks so much Leslie, With love Annabel.xxx
I can't wait to see your finished freeze-dried products, and then how you use them. I think it would be fun to experiment. Are there things that can't be freeze-dried? Oh my, those puppies are too cute! You are right, they do have a puppy smell, kittens do too. So busy you are but I know you are having fun!
ReplyDeleteDear Kathy, Im not sure yet what you cant freeze dry. Maybe really high fat items but you can freeze dry meat and eggs. I am loving the puppies and they are so cuddly. I will have quite a bit to show in Fridays post as the freeze drier has been running continuously! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteSo good you could get a freeze dryer! Love the puppies. Wondering how often you water your greenstalk if it doesn't rain? Last Dr appointment was discouraging. She is giving me 6 more weeks to see if it will heal and if not then surgery so asking for prayers for healing please. Love reading your report each week. If I had not broken my arm I think I could have gotten more of the celery I grew from the grocery store dried but thankful I had got some done! Nancy
ReplyDeleteDear Nancy, I hope your arm will heal! Rest and take everything you can like vitamin C and I wonder if calcium would help?
DeleteI water the stack planters all over at first but once established only from the top as it filters down all the layers. So they are super easy to manage. I will pray for your arm, please do rest it and rest generally as rest certainly helps the body to heal in my opinion. With much love Annabel.xxx
I'm so excited to see you got your freeze drier. I love the stainless worktable you have it sitting on, too.
ReplyDeleteI've been clearing out the town house and what a lot of work that has been. However I also benefitted in that I've found all sorts of things I've missed and forgot my daughter had borrowed, lol. She also gifted me things from her pantry that she simply doesn't use, and I emptied out the fridge and freezer of things she didn't want to pack and take with her. It came out to about two shopping bags worth of food and my budget was very blessed by it!
I am awaiting my daughter in law to run over with a whole deer they had processed for us. We pay the processing fee, but they do the hunting hauling, etc. and it's so much less expensive than ground beef! It is such a blessing to have this meat to go into my freezer.
And here she comes...Off I go. Love the puppies!!
Dear Terri, Wow your pantry really did well this week! All the things from your daughters fridge and pantry then all the venison! We use venison and it is good meat. That is fantastic! It is a busy time labelling and getting everything in the freezer but so worth it. Im glad you had so many bonuses this week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteAnnabel, I want one of those pups, LOL! How adorable they are!
ReplyDeleteThere have been some decent sales and prices (notice I did not say "good") but the quantities have mostly been limited to 4-6 of things I prefer to buy by the case. Still, the holes in my pantry have been filling nicely. The big 12 Hour Baking Sale was Thursday and I stocked up. There are still some things I need, but I am generally pleased with what I've been able to buy in the last 3-4 weeks.
EXCEPT that I am having to rearrange my entire longterm pantry, and it is quite a job! It's also super hard on my back, but I'm getting it done. The one consolation is that it is going to be better organized.
Best wishes to all of the Bluebirds, and I'm looking forward to Annabel's report on the freeze dryer.
--Maxine
Dear Maxine,
DeleteHaving just been rearranging so much myself I know what it is like o move so much stuff! But you do end up so much better organised. So I hope that is going well for you!
I am so glad that you have been able to stock up and I love the sound of he baking sale!
I will have a fair bit to show on Friday... the freeze drier has been going steadily and I am learning. And I am having a lot of fun! The puppies are keeping me busy too. They all have homes to go to, I will be a bit sad but also I will be able to feel I got them off to a good start! with much love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, that set up of yours is truly inspiring! You definitely have a gift for gardening and preserving your harvest. Those puppies made me melt. How sad that they are orphans, but how lucky they are to have found you. Blessings to you, Jennie🐾🖤🐾🖤
ReplyDeleteDear Jennie, Thank you! I have more fails than successes with gardening but I am persistent. I just keep planting and some things work out. The celery sure worked out. I am good at tomatoes... spinach... now I have containers I am ok at lettuces. I just keep trying. The puppies are doing very well which is a big relief! Thank you so much, with love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel
ReplyDeleteCuteness overload or what....those gorgeous puppies.
Well the first week of November was a write off for me due to being unwell. However I have made up for things in the last few days. The Christmas cakes have been made (2 batches 1 for us and gifts and 1 batch for our neighbour)
I have finished sewing the pockets on the 2 advent calendars that I am making for gifts and I will continue with some sewing today.
I agree that November is practically Christmas cause there are decorations everywhere you go. I have made a list of things needing to be done for Christmas and my goal is to spend at least 10 to 30 minutes on something every day. Yesterday I spent 30 minutes on getting a Christmas Diamond Dotz finished and things on the list are labelling the envelopes for Christmas cards, writing the cards, putting photos in the albums for DD12 and DNiece, shopping for gift cards and putting up a few decorations to enjoy whilst we are home with a few more items on the list to do.
Hope everyone is having a wonderful week
Take Care
Aly xxx
Dear Aly,
DeleteI am so sorry you weren't well. I hope you are ok now. Well done on the cakes. What a lovely gift for your neighbour.
The advent calendars will be wonderful gifts. It is a good idea doing a little towards Christmas every day. I have been trying to do that as well. This stops it from being overwhelming later. This week the puppies took up a lot of time and Im a bit off track!
I love that you do photo albums. Printed photos are a must. People reply on "the cloud" and will eventually have nothing. For this reason we print the favourite and important photos and they make great gifts.
It has been another big week! With love Annabel.xxx
