Feather your Nest Friday, 10th December, 2021.

It was a full week!  First I want to thank so many of you who shared experiences and tips re living with Covid and being ill with it.   I got so much useful and practical information.  Thank you so much.

This week I got on with using the produce I was given last week.  I still have some to go and the weekend is going to see me make a lot with Bananas!   We enjoyed the most delicious pineapple I have ever eaten, a ton of salads and good things.

This week my Bantam hen was due to hatch chicks.  With my record at two I hoped she would beat it!  Nothing happened on day 21.  Nope, nothing.  Nothing happened on day 22...  and I was thinking how she had been sitting for three weeks all for nothing!   But then I checked one more time...

Oh!!   I was thinking at this stage please please let there be more than two!!

I should have stayed away and had patience but I didn't.   It became an hourly "I'll just check on the chickens..."

Chicks started to appear and I could hear chip chip chip.  If you zoom in the egg on the bottom right has a crack... I could hear and see a little beak chip chip chipping away.     So exciting!!

This went on for hours until we had 15.  FIFTEEN.   Not two!   Oh my goodness I was so excited you would think I sat on them myself for three weeks!

Meanwhile...   my neighbour Mignon was packing up having sold her farm.  She keeps giving me things she thinks I might like.  This time fabric dyes and more velvet!   But she didn't stop there.

Every visit to Mignon's one of her dogs comes to me and sticks to me like glue.  She looks at me with "I love you, I love you, did I mention I love you?"  looks.   So I know this dog and she knows me.   You can tell where this is going.    Moving into town there are rules and Mignon has more dogs than you are meant to have.  And all her dogs are older, from 11 up to 15 or 16.    It is not easy to re home older dogs.

So guess who came home with me.  Zackie.

She loves going in the car.   She was happy to get in and come with me.    Scout and Molly weren't too sure.   We made a place for Zackie to sleep and be her own.

In the morning Andy let her out and mid morning he came inside and said Zackie is gone!    I went outside and called and looked around and yep no trace.   I got into the car and drove over to Mignon's farm.   It isn't a long drive maybe 6 or 7 kilometres.

As I drove in the driveway there was Mignon and as I opened the car door guess who came bounding up to meet me?  Zackie.  She did good time getting there!   So we repeated the entire process, she jumped in my car again and back we came!

Now she is settled in.   She is a very lovely natured dog.  I am giving her eggs every day as her coat isn't shiny.  I will soon fix that.

I had good luck at an op shop.  I found lovely jars full of soaps,  thick ornate velvet,  several fabric remnants and a puzzle for the girls.

Mum came over and I made a simple apple cake.

My big cook up for the week was baking a ham.  I made a rice salad and we have enjoyed this so much.   I gave Chloe a meal of ham, salads and fresh sliced pineapple.

I bottled up my Coffee Liqueur for Christmas gifts.  I had some really good heavy bottles to use.

It is delicious!

I continued on wash cloths.  The soaps from the op shop are in lovely colours and the idea is to pair a soap with a cloth for next years operation Christmas boxes.

I made more cleaning cloths for the gift cupboard.

And I completed two bags, also for gifts.

Some days I sewed five minutes, some days half an hour.  It just really adds up!

We topped up a raised garden bed with compost.   The tomatoes are doing really well and I will be picking tomatoes really soon.

Yesterday I set about my morning routine.  I had chicken feed and scraps in hand and as I approached the hen house with the chicks I saw a mess and that a fox had tried to get in.  It had dug around the hen house and under.   It had not succeeded but it didn't matter seven of my tiny chicks were dead.  I just felt sick.  Just heartbroken.  Seriously yesterday was just bad.

I realise now I am very lucky to still have the hen and eight chicks left.   We fixed up the damage and now the chicks are managing to go up the ramp into the enclosed hen house that I can shut tight at night.    I should have done this in the first place or not let them down on to the ground part of the coop.    A terrible price to pay for this mistake.

I am also now leaving Scout out overnight on patrol.   I hope we will be ok now.

With the other hen and her two chicks this gives me ten chicks.    And another hen is sitting on eggs.   Although she is the unreliable and mentally confused hen who I have given another chance.  I guess I better not get my hopes up there too much!

It was a week of wins and losses but overall increase.   It is just getting dark now, the chickens are locked inside for the night.  Scout is on duty.

Someone I like a lot (and who's Bible studies I adore) is Phil Robertson.  He posted this week...

"The weapons we fight with are not weapons of the world.  On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to God."

2 Corinthians 10. 4-5

Well it seems to me there is a giant ballet of good vs evil going on.   I guess there always has been but this last couple of years it seems amplified, accelerated... to me anyway.  But when I read those words!    We need not worry.  We just need faith and to be busy with what we can do and pray over the rest.

I hope it was a good week for you. How did you build up your nest, get ahead, add to your pantry?  We love to hear! xxx

  1. Annabelle your cleaning cloths look great. May I ask what you are using as the backing? ( the rough side I mean).

    2. Dear Sharyn and Gigi, Thank you! I am using microfibre. I bought big packs of them in different colours on eBay. So the cleaning side is good for windows, glass, surfaces ... anything. You could use flandlelet/flannel also. As long as it is absorbent. Then the top is just a cotton print. I hope this helps! Love Annabel.xxx

  2. Annabel,
My you have had a week of ups and downs, I am so sorry the fox caused you losing your chicks but happy to hear you didn't lose all. Large lesson learned there, (((HUGS)))
Your house had to smell amazing all week with all your cooking.
I love that you took your neighbor's dog in as family. I know she will fit right in very soon, she looks adorable.

I had a full week and it slipped by so fast.
We did make it to the grocery store and purchased $112 for $52, so I felt good. My pantry received a number of items and we did get some chocolate truffles for Christmas. I am noticing pricing increase weekly here. There are bare spaces on shelves and not only the sale items are missing.
I also received a $10 Kohl's cash to use at the store and a 25% off coupon, so I did make husband stop there, I was able to get 2 pair of slacks that would have regularly run me $32 for only $7.48 total, less than what I would pay at a thrift store. I needed new slacks that fit for the winter.

I was able to get the first floor of the house deep cleaned also, I love doing this right before Christmas so the house is perfect for decorating. I have the family room done and living room and dining room, today I will put my tree up on second floor landing with my old family ornaments. Husband will bring tree from shed to put on front porch and on Saturday we will set up family tree in family room. So a very Christmas filled week.

Prayers for all to follow the Light of Our Lord and look to him for guidance.
    Love,
    Rosanne

  3. Hi Annabel and everyone,

Annabel, I love seeing your new chicks and the lovely Zackie; I am so sorry that you lost some, too. Your crafts look so beautiful!

Annabel, I love reading your blogs every week and they help me so much. I've been absent commenting for a few weeks because my husband had surgery and it was go-go-go here for a while. He is just fine and recovering well, and this was a needed procedure for something that has been causing him problems for some time, so we are super thankful. It is amazing how time flies and there is so much to do with this kind of thing - and also how helpful medical and food pantries are during these times. I used both of ours so much, to make things he felt like eating and pull out fresh ice packs for swelling and extra pillows and blankets for comfort - taking a page out of your book years ago is why we have all those things! Also super thankful we both have a generous paid leave at work, so I could just stay home with him until he was cleared to go back.

This week I made turkey broth and chicken broth in my crock pots, a few loaves of sandwich bread and pumpkin bread, and bought some more bed linens at a very good price. Next week I am hoping to do a stock up for some pantry things we used and baking supplies that are good prices this month. And start the holiday cookie baking!

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

    1. Dear Kathy,
I am so glad your husband has done well and even back to work! Thank you for your kind words! I am just happy hearing how your medial and food pantry was ready. I am always saying it but making hay while the sun shines works! In easy times it is simple to build up the medical pantry and the food pantry. It is better than money in the bank. Then in harder times they are there helping so much.
Wonderful you had two broths going in two slow cookers! Also great to stock up on bed linens on sale. It is good to grab the baking items on sale too. I hope that after Christmas we get sale items... often then after New Years Day we get more. I will be checking the turkeys each time I am in town as sometimes they go on sale after Christmas as they want the space for something else. One thing I am thinking is to make sure I have freezer space incase of any chunky finds!
I hope you have a good new week. I am having a think and plan today. With love Annabel.xxx

  4. The chicks are so sweet Annabel! I’m so sorry that you lost some to the fox. That must have been such a horrible discovery. So much sewing! This is something I really need to work on next year, this year I’ve made only a few face masks and that’s it. And when I did I remembered how fun it is to sew. So I need to get back into it.

Ham is so nice to have on hand. And with a good salad it is the perfect meal for hot days. I love pineapple too!
You are one of very few people I know who goes to their neighbours and comes back with a dog lol.

We were very fortunate this week, a friend gave us over 2kg of fresh fish which was absolutely beautiful. I had to cut the fillets into steaks because they were so big. We were also gifted some grocery vouchers which were totally unexpected but so appreciated.

I finished the baby blanket I was knitting for the teacher at my children’s school. I was so pleased with how it turned out and she loved it.

Two of my kids have finished for the year and the rest will finish by Tuesday. I’m so excited, everyone is ready for the break!

    Have a lovely weekend

    1. Dear Jen,
Ha ha you really made me laugh. Some of the things I get up to I think how am I going to explain this to Andy?! Anyway Zackie is working out so well. She is very quiet but if someone comes up the driveway she lets us know.
Pineapples are a good price here at the moment. I worked out slabs of fresh pineapple are really a great ham stretcher and delicious.
I think God is looking after you Jen as you have had food coming in like this! 2 k of fresh fish is just beautiful! And grocery vouchers!! Amazing! I know you will make great use on these... I hope you find good deals and can double their value! (if I get a voucher I try and get half price items so I double the money. But once I had a $50 voucher and I hung on to it and there was a clearance of shampoos and conditioners in our supermarket. Some normally were up to $20 each and were out for $1. I turned that voucher into over $300 of goods, I think that was a personal best! )
I think the teacher would have been very touched by your gift.
Enjoy the holidays. Lucy said to me the girls were desperately tired and I remembered how tired they were by end of year. The break is needed by everyone. With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Dear Annabel, I know those feelings of loss in the chook pen a (just yesterday one of my little frizzle ladies died and I am not sure why). I am sorry about the loss of your chickens. The survivors are gorgeous and I know you will get a lot of joy from them. I think letting Scout patrol at night is a great idea. You are very nice to take in Zackie. She looks like a happy dog. My week sped by in a whirl of cleaning jobs, appointments and end of school term days. I still managed to make a few more dish cloths, clean out the fire and make a trip to my mothers with a car packed full. I am up early making a Toblerone cheesecake for a Christmas party later in the day. My apricots are ripening and despite another overly busy week coming up I am determined not to waste one of those fruits. I will be getting out my Fowlers jars tomorrow. Take Care Bluebirds, love Clare

  7. Annabel, I am so sorry for the loss of your chickens. I know that feeling all too well. Seems like the minute we let our guard down there is some predator ready to take advantage. I also have a bantam hen sitting on ten eggs and just hoping to get several new chicks. She was so flighty last time and only stayed in her broody mode until the first baby hatched out. It seems like such a waste, but I saw on Youtube that the older eggs not hatched can be buried in your garden as fertilizer. The ultimate "use-it-up" idea I think.

I feel bad as I've not contributed a thing here lately. My husband and I continue to have health issues and have had a job just keeping up with the basic stuff. We are trying to adjust to our limitations and face the fact that this may be our new normal. I refuse to give in or give up! I managed to get 21 bowl cozies sewn up to go with the other things I have gathered through the year for family gift giving. It's a great feeling to have it all together and today I start wrapping. We are expecting a cold front tomorrow and there are still plants that need protecting. My lemon tree and loquat tree are blooming and that has me a bit concerned. Today I am dehydrating some onions, apples, and a variety of peppers. Also trying to dry sharp cheddar cheese into powder for the first time. Going by instructions from a youtuber. So far, I'm seeing a greasy yellow blob. I will report on this experiment at a later date!

Annabel, your new dog should be a great addition to your menagerie. I love the way you take things in stride! I'm to the point I want a dog but just waiting for the right opportunity. I so agree about the good and evil playing out before us. So sad to see our countries in turmoil. We have to keep our faith and find comfort knowing we are on the right side and doing all we can to be ready for whatever! Christmas blessings to all of you!

    1. Dear Pam,
I have a dilly hen on eggs that will most likely be no good and if so I also will busy them as garden fertiliser! I learned this on Self Sufficient me on you tube and have done it ever since.
I am sorry you are both having health issues. No dont give up! I hope you can find something that helps. Often there are helps it is just a matter of finding them. I have had amazing things happen with my health just by eliminating wheat for instance. Which I would never have guessed could even help me. But it was a miracle for me. So I pray something helps you.
You got 21 bowl cosies made! That is a lot! They are great gifts!
Your dehydrating sounds fantastic and I will look forward to hearing how the cheese goes.
I hope the right dog comes your way! A good dog is just wonderful. I should stop collecting more though!
Christmas blessings to you Pam! It is not long now! With love Annabel.xxx

    2. Thank you so much for your encouragement! In the matter of health, with us, it's all about age I think (I'm 80) and different body parts simply wearing out. Every time we turn around something else needs to be patched up :-). We have good doctors
and try to eat right. I admire you for having the courage to eliminate wheat! I might give that a try even though bread is way up there on my favorites list. Oh, my husband just discovered Self Sufficient Me and we both love his vlog! Thanks again for all the good you do in this place!

  8. Annabel sorry to hear you lost some of your beautiful chicks :( it is heartbreaking but at the same time so glad some of the little ones survived.

I love that you have a beautiful new dog and so happy you gave the elder dog a new home and she does look content :). The washcloths, cleaning cloths, baking and coffee liquor look divine.

Not sure if you have heard about the AdBlue shortage that is a diesel additive used in modern trucks to minimise emissions. It is made from urea which there is a shortage of and some trucks can run without it but most of the modern ones cannot. The government has secured a supply of of enough processed urea until February but after that transportation of goods could be further affected. As we also know a lot of people are having trouble also getting truck parts to repair their trucks too so it is looking dicey.

DH has been quite sick for the last month with a recurring bout of Q Fever so not a lot done as I have been looking after him. We did however get a lot of organisation done in the home, a backlog of laundry as we have had so much rain and also added quite substantially to our grocery stockpile and are almost where we would like to be.

Our Vicky challenge added up to $270.55 in savings last week :) .

    Purchases -
    - I saved $20 off my WW grocery shop using a promo code.
    - Saved $250.65 by buying spam, mouthwash, vitamins and coca cola on specials.
    - We have been building up our grocery stockpile by taking advantage of a 2 x points promo at Woolworths which will give us money off our grocery shops sooner with Rewards points.

    In the kitchen-
    - Cooked all meals from scratch.

    In the gardens -
    - I pruned all but 2 shrubs in the gardens surrounding the home.
    - DH has been mowing and whipper snipping constantly to keep up with the long grass as it has rained so much here.
    - Our rainwater tanks are full :) .
    - On days it wasn't raining we trench composted scraps in the vegetable gardens and weeded both them and the chook pen.
    - Whilst in the chook pen we took stock of the fact that we will have to replace some of the posts of the chook pen and do some other work in there to get it ready for chickens. We have the replacement posts already here from the demolition of the grape yard vineyard at the back of the property and more wire if we need it too.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead :) .

    1. Dear Lorna,
I am sorry DH has been sick. I hope he is getting better.
Thank you for your comments on the adblue. I am trying to learn more on this as I know of the shortage and with Australia's long distances and reliance on trucking this could be big. I have heard there is a modification that can be done but it is highly illegal. So I dont know what they will do. This week I will learn more as my brothers are farmers, one is a cropper... so I know of both shortages on parts and also new machinery ie harvesters... ordered but not coming. So there are many layers here... that could even see crops not harvested. Another shortage is belts that are in harvesters... if one belt goes everything stops and no one can get replacements.. The mind boggles what this could mean...
It is good to hear you have full rain water tanks! When the tanks fill I put on washing and take a big bath!
I am so glad you are getting chickens! They will provide you with so much! (Plus joy!)
Have a good new week and I hope DH is feeling better. With love Annabel.xxx

  10. So lovely to hear about your brood and all your gifts! Sorry to hear about your chicks.

My internet was down yesterday, and so I couldn't share about my week. But you know what? It was a blessing in disguise! The Lord gave me such a precious time with my husband on a short trip to an Amish store. Then a busy day today. I was blessed to get caught up on my bread baking. I also refilled all my jars in my pantry and even added a few. How nice it is to go from one task to the next in a state of contentment. I haven't calculated my savings this week but I'm sure it is allot. But to spend my time profitably by preparing delicious and healthy food for my family, And to mend and alter clothing (and linens) with care, is such a joy!
    Blessings to all!

    1. Dear Leslie,
I would love to go to an Amish store. That would be so interesting to me. A very nice outing!
Full pantry jars and lots of bread baked sound good to me. I also like mending! At the moment I dont have mending but I do have small alterations and I love how a few minutes hemming something or a small change put it into use. Contentment is a wonderful thing. It is funny as I have often felt that I SHOULD want things that I dont want. haha if that makes sense. Like I should want to go on a cruise. But I dont I cant think of anything worse. I should want to go to parties and go overseas. But I hate crowds and I hate plane travel and air ports. I would truly rather be out in the gum tress with my cows! I am content! I understand your happiness at work done, full jars and a lovely outing! It sounds perfect to me! With love Annabel.xxx

  11. Just a thought here about the dog. A vet. once told us to be careful adopting older dogs esp. around young children because the dogs personality is 'set' and can be unpredictable. We did it anyway and had a bad experience. Just want you and your family to be safe. The ears look Doberman...not sure.

    1. Dear Carole,
Well little chicks are really tiny and pretty delicate. The panic and mayhem of being terrorised is enough to kill them, be squashed by the hen ... a fox can get into a shed of chickens and kill hundreds without touching most. I really hate them because often they kill things for fun and dont eat a thing. Now each night I make sure each chick is locked up in the little wooden house and not out in the run... so far so good. I hope this explains... Love Annabel.xxx

  13. Annabel I thought I had written a comment but it looks like I forgot to hit enter. Oops.
I am so sorry for the loss of all those little balls of clucky fluffiness. It's great that you have some left. Now they can all get up off the ground you should have good success in growing them up. Our girls are still in the teenage years and have yet to start laying. I am hoping they will be laying in the next couple of weeks.
My Mum was feeling left out of the various Christmas celebrations, so she has invited herself and Dad to come and stay with us. There had been other plans in place but these were deemed 'not enough'. Oh well two more wont be too hard, and we do have the bed in the caravan available. I just need to clean the van out for them. I will add that job to the growing list.
Now my folks will be here for Christmas, we dont have enough table settings. I decided that I would make three more placemats, just for the Grandies. I have one finished and two more to go. Tilly has decided these will live at Granny's, for when they all come to have Christmas here. I love this idea.
The little girls and I have been doing a few Christmas craft activities. We almost have everything finished for them to make up little packages for their other Grandma, Uncle and Aunty. We have a bit more painting to do to get the wrapping paper finished as well. It's just so windy that the paper blows away. Hopefully we can get this all finished off tomorrow morning and posted the next day.
It has been hot, humid, windy and the air full of pollen here. I have been hiding out inside as much as I can to keep the severity of my asthma to a minimum. I am so looking forward to not having to think about breathing.
I love the sewing that you are getting done. It is all so pretty and practical.
