Feather your Nest Friday, 8th, 2021.

I didn't have a good week.   So this was a do- what -I could- to -get -through -it -week.

Andy has been in hospital TWICE.  I had to call an ambulance on the weekend.  I wasn't well either but nothing serious and not covid!   He came home for one night and needed to go back to hospital.

Andy is coming home again tomorrow.  And he is doing well and quite cheerful tonight.  I am just tired and my nerves are frayed.

Several of my friends also had absolute shockers this week.  I hope no one else has been in a bad way. Although saying that I can't turn on the TV without distress so maybe it was one of those weeks!?

In between everything I still had some successes and so have something to report!  And that makes me feel better too.  When we didn't get everything done it is good to look at what we did.   When I am sick or a wreck (lol) and can't DO I plan.  I make lists.  Study something on You Tube.   I have mastered the art of setting myself up in bed, watching You Tube on my lap top and crocheting.   It's pretty good.  Some of the time I will sit and learn a new crochet pattern this way.   It's very nice.  Add a cup of tea!  Mum does this. She is the master of knitting in bed.

We started the year off in a big way on The Tuesday Afternoon Club.    Last year crafting, baking, gardening (and more) together really helped us through lockdowns and stress.   We had a lot of fun.  We filled our gift cupboards, stocked our pantries and expanded our gardens.  This year I have added the "Put it to Good Use Challenge".   We all have resources.  Maybe a cupboard of craft supplies, fabric or yarn.  Maybe a fruit tree or something that grows locally that could be useful.   Time to put it all to good use.   Make all your Birthday and Christmas presents from supplies you have!   I have some other goals like to keep building up my trading/bartering.   But mainly to put things to good use.   Take every opportunity!

I began with deciding to put all my odd balls of cotton to good use and make wash cloths as well as learn a bunch of new stitches at the same time.  My aim is at least one a week and then bundle them into stacks of three and tie them up nicely.

My other put it to good use challenge currently involves zucchini!  They are coming in now and are lovely.

I am picking a couple a day.  It is so nice to be harvesting!

Another thing I can put to good use is my Parsley Seed.  Each year now I collect loads of seed heads.  I go out with scissors and clip away.

I let it dry out a bit more then package it up into tiny paper bags.  It grows so well.  This makes a little gift.  It fits in a posted card.  And I replant some rows for the next year.    Being able to pick parsley anytime and even big bunches to give away is lovely.  It is also very good for the chickens.  The goat gets some too!

I am excited because I am getting a new clothes line.  I had the most beautiful one at my old house.  This one here I always have felt was grimy and old.  I wiped it down a million times but still felt this way.   It is going and I am getting a new one.  I made a new peg bag to celebrate the upgrade.

Some of my week was planning for sure.  One of my earlier plans was to make fabric gift bags.  I saw a great sale of lovely Christmas fabrics.  Mum is mad keen on these.   The fabric arrived today and I love it!

Having things you are looking forward to is a good thing!  Projects lined up are very nice!

I was also blessed with some supplies!  6 huge buckets.  12 beautiful bottle with screw top lids.   AND a huge wooden box,  like the one I made a cubby house from.  This one is taller.  It COULD be goat house, chicken house, lamb/calf shelter... mmm I am thinking about it.   First I need to paint it with some outdoor sealer and then I will decide.

I have some more letters from Laine!   So I will be posting these over the next couple of weeks.

How did you build up your home, pantry, garden this week?   Australia is having lots of border closures and lock downs. I know other countries are too. I thought about posting photos of our local supermarket.  I won't bother as you have all seem empty shelves.   Fresh produce has been the worst of it.  I have seen this two weeks in a row.   Some dairy was missing like cream.   Build your pantry.

Have a lovely weekend.  We all need a rest! xxx

  1. Dear Annabel,
I’m sorry you’ve had a tough week and I pray your husband is much better now. It’s not pleasant when our loved one is unwell.
I love your crocheted face flannel and saw it also on the Tuesday Club. I’m wondering if you could share where that pattern is from. I don’t watch much tv however when I do I like to be crocheting or knitting and would really like to try that pattern.
My week has been satisfying as I have accomplished much in the kitchen and also my sewing is progressing well. Our garden is thriving like yours and I try and preserve a little each day. I have also made 3 lots of bone broth which will keep use going for awhile. I love your idea of popping a little bag of parsley seeds in with a card. It’s those little touches that make receiving a card so special.
Have a lovely and a much better week.
    Blessings Gail.

    1. Dear Gail, Thank you so much. Things are much better now.
I posted the patten links in the club. I will try to find it and tag you there. It is really easy too. Keeping up with the garden by preserving something each day is a wonderful way to do it. It adds up so much! I am amazed at all the little things that can go in a card. I keep trying to expand that list! Thank you Gail. With love Annabel.xxx

  2. So sorry to hear Andy hasn't been well!! It sounds like it has been a very stressful time for you Annabel. I hope Andy is on the mend now. I know I feel frustrated when I can't achieve things on my 'to do' list. It is always nice to be able to strike things off as being accomplished. You have coped with the situation very well Annabel, and I wouldn't expect anything less! Go gently into the new week Annabel, take care, Bless you all, Robyn S.A xx

    1. Dear Robyn!
I love your words, “Go gently into the new week....”! One encouraging sentence can really help someone who needs it!

I understand the frustration of the slowness of working through a list of tasks. I am now thinking of such things as being like a jigsaw puzzle. We can’t just push through all projects. They can take time and skill. I think it is better to just enjoy the experience, and, from that, maybe the list will shrink faster! Haha!! ..... Actually, I think I ought to use this time to sing and pray as I go. So many friends need our prayers.

      Thank you for your comment!

  4. I'm so sorry about your week! I hope all are feeling better.

I think of Laine's letter, Busy as a Backwards Bee, I think it is. About listing accomplishments as an alternative to crossing out items on a list. That's what your post reminded me of, Annabel. Looking to what you got done over what you didn't. Bravo!!

I found some shelf stable whipping cream at Trader Joe's here in the US. Not a long shelf life, but I still grabbed a couple. I hate it when I need cream for a recipe and don't have it. This will solve that problem.

I just finished organizing my Christmas list for this year! I write things in as I find or make them. Plus extras for last minute.

    Enjoy your week!

  5. Dear Annabel,

I am so sorry to hear that it has been a tough week for you guys. I'm glad to hear that Andy is feeling a little better and is coming home...hopefully to stay!!! I also hope you are feeling better, too. It's amazing how not having your normal health level affects your daily life so much, isn't it? Even lower energy bites into not only productivity but a positive outlook, at least for me.

I love the sounds of your new "challenge" on your Tuesday Afternoon Club. Great idea. I love the stitch you show on the washcloth above, and what a great idea for gifts! I have been working on a pair of gloves and matching cowl for me, and am hoping to get those done this coming week. Tomorrow we are doing the final clean up of all things Christmas, so that will feel nice to have things tidy and back in order.

Wishing you a better week and can't wait to see what you've been up to on your next post!

I am getting my sewing room more together than it was, we put 2 shelving units in it and I was able to empty 3 totes of fabric to the shelves . It's so nice to be able to see what I have now. So much to do for the coming months. I have some canning I want to do in the next week, sweet potatoes and regular potatoes so as not to waste them. On another note the world is not the same place anymore, it's so disturbing. Be safe and God Bless.

  7. Hi Annabel
I’m so sorry you had such a rough week, it must have been so frightening. Poor Andy, that’s great that he’s feeling better. I hope he is able to rest well at home and fully recover. You too!

The wash cloths are a great idea, and you have lovely colours to use. I am very much on board with your use what you have challenge. I have so many patterns and planned projects that I have the supplies for already and I’ve discovered that it actually stresses me out. So I am making a real effort to use things up and only buy supplies if they are absolutely essential to finish something off. I started the year with a cross stitch pattern I bought in 2018. I’ve substituted colours using a great online tool that tells you similar dmc colours to the one you need and I am absolutely loving how it’s turning out. So I’m feeling very inspired!

I’ve been doing some major clearing out as well, starting with kids rooms. There have been quite a few clothes, toys, books, bedding etc outgrown recently so we’ve given some to friends and have many bags to take to the op shop. This will be a long term project, but one that I know will be of huge benefit. I find clearing out physical stuff helps me clear some mental space as well!

I hope you are able to have a genuinely relaxing weekend, it sounds like you both need it! This has been a difficult week for so many people, thinking of you all xx

  10. Hi Annabelle, I am sorry Andy was in the hospital again and pray he will be well. It is great to read another post by you and the ones by Laine in these times. As you know our country is a mess right now and if I would choose a word for the year which I don't know if I have ever done it would be the word "trust". Trust in the Lord. The material you received is so pretty and the Peg bag you made is as well. I have been propped up in bed with the computer before but need to put those needles beside me and make better use of my time. I have a Christmas Hexagon table topper I am sewing on now and have all the piece now cut out to start sewing on the tumbler baby quilt. I hope to try to make my first frittata today! I have ask before but checked a couple of times and didn't see an answer so will ask again if you don't mind. Two messages came in one right after the other on messenger from you asking if there was any thing the Bluebirds could pray for us about. I just thought it was strange the way they came in with the same message immediately one right after the other and wanted to see if they were legit or a hack. I am washing sheets now and our daughter is coming over later to put them back on the beds due to it being hard on our arms and backs. Family is wonderful. It is so great the way you can barter and find things. I don't seem to be able to do much of this but like reading about yours. Thank you for sharing. Nancy

  12. I am sorry that Andy has been s sick. It is a horrible time to have your husband in the hospital. Were you able to visit or is it on lock down? Your dishcloths are beautiful.

Of course you know of our horrible week in America. Right now the future looks bleak and all we can do is pray because there is nothing else. left. I cannot imagine things being okay here for a long, long time. But, like our middle son told me, we still have our good neighbors that we can depend on if we need them, we still have our home and an income and we still have friends and our church. We spent time with friends this week reading scripture and praying and that was the bright spot. As long as we can meet once a week we will do so and if not we can meet online.

In our area the grocery deals have returned so we have been stocking up and hauling it home and storing it away because there is talk of a 100 day hard lockdown coming soon. It has been so long since we had these grocery deals that it seems unreal to get supplies for so little and even free.

I will be praying for Andy and for you as his caregiver. Much love, Lana

  15. So sorry to hear Andy's been in hospital on top of all the other stuff! Bless your weary heart. It IS fun learning a new skill from YouTube. I laugh at myself finally learning to make light, fluffy, edible biscuits (not scones or cookies) at age 60! LOL! And gravy from scratch....Fun projects going on around here lately like organizing and sorting all my card-making supplies: cardstock, acrylic stamps, rubber stamps, stamp pads, embellishments, you get the idea - all in their proper places and labeled. Oh, that's heaven for me ;). Seemed like everything I touched got re-organized the other day...the hall medicine pantry, kitchen spice back-ups, shelves in the kitchen pantry, etc...

Well I couldn't live without one now, they make hanging clothes faster and taking them off faster too. I LOVE the one you made. We visited my parents this week and had a productive visit - we got their back fence up and a few jobs done that were worrying them. I also managed to do two jars of refrigerated pickles yesterday. I am so hoping they work and that my people love them as I have cucumbers everywhere. Hang in there Annabel. Love Clare

  19. Annabel even your down time is productive. Your ability to push through and continue to create amazes me. Do remember that you have used up a lot of your adrenaline lately and that this needs to be paid back.
I have been working on an old Singer Treadle Sewing Machine. I have owned this since 1986 and used to sew leather on it. Then along came kids, the machine was packed away in it's cabinet, and it was used as a side table. I am so surprised at how well preserved she is. Through the internet I have dated her to 1921. She was built in Scotland. I have named her Irene, after Kim's MIL who used to work in the factory and possibly even worked on this machine. Irene is currently waiting for a new drive belt and then will be put to work.
I am at the half way point on crocheting two baby cardigans. I have to wait now until more supplies arrive. One of these jackets is for my niece expecting in May and the other is for my daughter, expecting in June. The sewing room is full of material and patterns suitable for little people.
It's been unusually cool and overcast with some passing coastal showers. There isnt a lot in the rain gauge but I will take anything that is offered. My garden is booming and today the plan is to get some more seeds in. Once this cool damp weather passes, I have no doubt that the heat and humidity will return with a bang! I am taking full advantage of the damp followed by the heat by getting the seeds in now. I am hoping to get another crop of zucchini and button squash, green runner beans, sweet corn and lettuce. The fruit fly are prolific this year even with baits everywhere full of them. I wont be putting in any tomatoes for a while. Everything else is bagged as soon as the fruit starts to form. My garden is full of little chiffon bags on the small veg. It looks funny but works.
    Life is good.

This is such a strange season here, too, and currently cool and overcast, thankfully. For the first time, I am actually harvesting peaches, since our unusually cool spring largely beat the fruit flies!
I am sure that it is purpose that keeps Annabel going under duress! She’s a good Aussie, I think!

I have been making Christmas tree decorations, of all things - in January. I watched the Christmas edition of ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’ and one of their projects was to make a simple tree decoration. I have had lots of fun using things from my stash and each one is better than the one before. I am improving.
I belong to a crochet group and we give each other small handmade gifts at Christmas so I have mine all ready to go - 11 months early.
I am now making more to sell at our local CWA Christmas Fare. I think I will display them on a tree branch. Most of the sewing is done by hand so I can sit under the cool fan and watch a bit of tv while I sew.

  23. Dear Annabel and Beautiful Bluebirds!!

One of the ladies that I do gardening work with was commenting that she and her friends had been having a rough time lately. That included me! haha!! It is a strange season.

If I skip all of the challenges, there are some fun stories to share! ......

With Dad as my chauffeur, we were travelling in to town when we saw gates on the footpath! We needed gates! As it turned out, a lady was already claiming the small gates, and that was fine. Dad mentioned that we were actually looking for a big gate for fencing the home paddock for the sheep, anyway. The family that was working there asked what we were looking for, and then took us to see a large gate in the back yard! It was perfect! It was given to us! They also offered us a large metal bin for storing sheep feed in! They actually offered them!! It was amazing to us, and timely!

Then, the family explained to us that they were clearing out the house. They had previously tried selling things, but now had a small shed of items that they were taking to the op shop, and we were welcome to take anything that we could use! ..... Annabel, there were new brand name bed sheets, which I took! There was an electric citrus juicer that Dad will use! There was a box of glassware and dessert forks which I was allowed to take to sort through, being able to take the rest to an op shop! It was there that I discovered these beautiful curvy knives along with dainty forks! I was dismayed when Mum informed me that they are fish knives! Haha!! .... There is a timber case for knitting needles, too! I could see that the owner of these items loved cakes (hence the sets of new cake forks!) and gardens!!

We also had some forced down time, so stewed some of my first peach harvest, and started a beautiful puzzle featuring a timber rocking chair, a patchwork quilt, baskets ........ with an irregular-shaped border!

We must remember that these times when we need the Almighty’s help for everything are a gift. This is all that matters.

He is already booked in for a hospital stay next time he is back home and we will have our fingers crossed that these results don’t mean further hospitalisation. He has two separate issues.
I love your crochet work. It is a skill I don’t have. Putting things to use is a thought I will embrace this year. After weeks of upheaval due to builders, visitors, a wedding, Christmas and hubby being back on holidays ,I am finally home alone with time to think and plan my year. Time to restock the pantry first, make a health and exercise plan, move on the things we no longer need and find the time to create. Creativity is so good for our well being, whatever form it takes.

  26. Dear Annabel,
I'm so sorry to hear that your dear husband had to spend time in the hospital this week. I'm praying that you are both on the mend. My dad though he had the flu after Christmas, but then it turned out to be Covid. He was in the hospital a couple of days, but is now home. I can't visit due to distance and avoiding my family's exposure. Of course, this week in American has been horrible as you well know.
Crocheting in bed would be relaxing. I need to try doing it there sometimes. We can only do want we can do. I'm currently making a list of winter project, both essential and fun. Mostly it's been essential, so I need to find a little balance during this heart of winter.
The Christmas fabrics and your new clothes pin bag are lovely. Hope this week is an improvement.
    Blessings, Laura

  27. I’m so sorry to hear about Andy being in hospital I hope he is ok now. It must have been an awful week as you rarely complain, I hope things improve for you both this week. Trust you to find a way to keep productive even when you are down! You are a real inspiration!!

I didn’t do much to build up my home this week or since Christmas really, but Christmas is over, new year is over and our camping trip is over so I really feel like I can roll up my sleeves and start the year now. I’m going to spend the next half hour planning the coming week and see what I can achieve.

    Take care Annabel ❤️

  29. So sorry to hear about Andy. My family will be praying for you both! I pray that you had a special birthday. I turned 50 on the 9th. Boy, did the Lord bless me with lovely gifts and several small get-togethers. My eldest son said it was about time was celebrated properly. ;)

Thanks for staying positive despite your week. You sure are a blessing to so many, Annabel.

  30. Dear Annabel

I do hope that Andy & you are both on the mend now. It is so difficult and draining running back and forth to hospital at the best of times but in such dreaded circumstances the way things are.

I think it was a horrid week all round last week. We arrived home from our holiday and I fell sick that night with a chest infection and spent so much time in bed. We woke to the news that Greater Brisbane was headed into a 3 day lockdown and as we had been in the area we took ourselves off to be tested for Covid with Negative results coming back but still asked to be mindful of the lockdown and mask rules. DP went to get some groceries abiding by the rules but lots of bare shelves here I think due to the way peoples minds work when they hear the words "lockdown" and the weather was also a factor as it was raining when we arrived back and has been for a week solid. DP was unable to return to work due to the lockdown which was fine with his boss as he then requested some "smoked sausages" on his return as he had been missing his morning tea.

The problem I have found is getting into a Dr as this is the second chest infection I have had since December. The surgery will not see anyone with any symptoms even with a negative test, including anyone with asthma. I do believe this is taking things a little too far but do understand. They will not issue a script without you being seen....um so I am confused. They told me to present to Emergency and be checked there. I think this is wrong on there behalf as Emergency is for emergencies not for getting a script for antibiotics. The testing staff told me to go to the Dr....who do you believe? DD10 has an appointment to see the dentist next week so this morning I rang to cancel the appointment due to us needing to wear masks and having been in an area of concern, well they are accepting us and have just asked that we abide by wearing masks in the surgery and DD10 can take off whilst the dentist is work as they will be wearing masks. Fully understand how people get confused.

Your new peg bag and your material are just gorgeous and I am looking forward to seeing what you make with the material.

As we are staying home mostly (except for appointments) we have been making things from a new cookbook I got on a pre sale with an ebook. Yesterday we made wraps for lunch and the meatballs for dinner and both were approved by DD10.

We have been doing jigsaw puzzles, watching movies, cleaning for house inspection next week, packing away what Christmas items we had out, and DD10 got a new "Make & Play" book for Christmas which I got on a pre sale last year with an ebook so I went through and got different containers, ingredients etc so we have made some moisturising bars and some wobbly jelly soap as well as melting putty. Lot's to keep us going.

Love the fact that you were able to crochet whilst you and Andy were unwell. Sometimes I think that the universe is telling us to take a pause on life and re assess what it important in life.

    Take Care & Thank you
    Love Aly xxx
