Feather your Nest Friday, 20th November 2020.

This week proved how fast things can change.  Last week I don't think our state had any Corona Virus cases.  Early in the week there were twenty cases and on Wednesday Mum rang me and said "Turn on the TV!"  The Premier was announcing a whole state lockdown beginning at midnight.  People had until 12 am to get where they wanted to be.  So there was a mass scramble of people heading home or wherever they wanted to spend the next six days in lockdown. It reminded me of Cinderella.   Be home by midnight!

The lock down included no school, shops (except essential ie fuel, chemist, groceries) offices, events... all funerals and weddings cancelled...

The next thing people descended on the grocery stores to the extent that even in many country towns the police attended for crowd control.   The stores were emptied very fast.  Our local store was bedlam apparently.

My plans had included a trip to the city so that was off.   What was so dramatic was the speed all this happened.   Some people had been waiting months to go to see family in Western Australia and finally that state just opened.  There were people in the air on the way only to be turned back to South Australia. People were crying at airports.   On the border near my daughters place the police have been camped for months.  They were there enforcing the rule that no one from Victoria could cross.  Now they are in the same place and have turned around in the opposite direction and no one can go the other way!   I am the only one who finds this ironic... or something?   Maybe there is no actual word invented yet that covers this?

So the week was re arranged.  I got on with other stuff.   I had roses to dry so I hung up little bunches around the kitchen...

I have projects in mind for these.

I finally finished a blanket I have been making for Sidney.

It is pure wool (Bendigo Woollen Mills) and single bed size.  I hope he gets many years of warmth from it.

Next I have one for Thomas to make.

Last week I made a big batch of Sausage Rolls.  This week it was Pasties.   I make quite large meal size ones.  They are packed with veggies so they are a meal on their own and they freeze well.  This fed everyone including Chloe and Luke and I froze lots.  It is nice to have easy meals in the freezer.   Actually when we were locked down I considered how many meals I had.   This is why we prepare!

All the things we do to get ahead add up!   While many people panicked we did not need to.  I checked in with the girls and both were fine without going to the shops.   Lucy heard the police were at her store and people were going crazy.  I said you do not ever want to be out in those circumstances and especially not with children!   Stay home!   And they were fine.
Actually this week led to many moments and some questions.   "Mum,  how long do you think we need to be prepared for?"   And down to a discussion on salads that can be made from canned goods and garden odds and sods?    It was a week to review how we are.   We were asked to wear masks outside the home.   We all had plenty of masks on hand in in the car.    I went to the cupboard and got out masks made ahead and ready to give out.

I was able to post masks to a couple of people who needed them.  So I am back on the mask making.

Mum gave me some meat for the dog, dry dog biscuits and a lot of food for the chooks.

I salvaged an old cage that I thought would be perfect for Bantams and chickens.  (Hopeful thoughts.)

Just to add interest to the week we also had terrible high winds and heat which revived a bushfire from a week ago. Once again we were in blanket of smoke and on alert.  Mum was packed and ready to evacuate to give you an idea of how things were.  I said earlier in the year that I am sure people (world wide) probably have crisis fatigue.  If that wasn't true before it is now.

But we came thorough the week and pretty well.  I was watering the garden three times a day to keep things going, especially my tomatoes.  So far the all look fine.

I felt happy that my weeks plans could go bottoms up and I was completely happy and content to stay home instead.  I decided to sew, write Christmas Cards,  wrap presents and cook.   In fact it was lovely.   I loved that I could give masks to people who needed them.    If you have not made masks and can sew a stitch then make as many as you can.  They could save a life.  They could help your family, reassure someone, bless someone.   If you don't need them now then have them ready incase you have a week like this where everything changes in a blink.

And speaking of changing in a blink... now our lockdown ends tomorrow as someone told a story to contact tracers that was a lot of baloney.  Tomorrow is Saturday so many people would have had weddings cancelled.  Because one person lied.

Along with masks I decided to make an extra effort to write letters.  I can't write a lot but I wrote a couple.  My thinking is that we need to do extra things to add joy and happiness.   I wrote two in cards I made.   One has chicken pictures from a magazine and the other is a picture I found of actual "making hay while the sun shines!"  How good is that!?

How did you build up your home, feather your nest, add to your pantry or garden this week?   Are you working on Christmas and if you are in the US you might be working on Thanksgiving celebrations?   I feel that these special times are so important.  I am working a little each day towards Christmas.

I have already THREE more letters from Laine!  I will post one over the weekend or on Monday.   If you know any followers of Laine's Letters would you please tell them that Laine is writing again?

Have a lovely weekend.xxx

  1. That is amazing that one wrong and deceitful person could make that change to your area. 20 cases in our state we would be dancing the jig and celebrating. We have thousands each day in each state here in the U.S. Sad.
You would sure think people would have learned after round 1 to be prepared and after the fires. I just don't understand people who take no steps to be prepared for anything.
    Please stay safe and heathly.

    1. Thank you Cheryl. This person stopped 1.6 million people! I thought since the virus arrival earlier in the year everyone would have masks... but no.
I know the numbers are mind boggling too. We now have 25 known cases I the state. While many places would be thrilled with this it is bad here. One thing is we are a population spread out a lot. That probably helps. This week was a lesson on how fast things can change and to be ready! With love Annabel.xxx

  3. The whole world seems to have lost it's mind! The US is still in a mess because of the election and that just feels up in the air everyday. Our Daughter had their tickets home for Christmas cancelled by the airline in Germany so they won't be coming home for a visit; Our son and his wife are afraid to travel so cancelled coming for Thanksgiving. Friends will come and eat with us and she will do the side dishes.

In the midst of it all though is JOY at the birth of another granddaughter. This is the baby who tried to be born at twenty weeks and only by prayer hung on until 39 weeks! The doctor has been amazed. She is strong and healthy and not a tiny preemie as we though she might be but eight pounds and five ounces! God is so good!

    1. Dear Lana,
Well yes. I have to agree. I am very sad for you about your daughter and families trip. I hope soon they can re book and get there. But I really understand your disappointment.
Congratulations on your new Grand daughter! This is amazing to get from twenty weeks to thirty nine! Every single extra day is precious and makes a difference! This is just wonderful! This is truly something to celebrate! With love, Annabel.xxx

  4. How sad that one person caused fear and chaos in your area. Yes, here in the US the cases just keep rising. I don't understand what the big deal is with wearing masks... treat it as the new jewelry
The county in my state below us just went to purple yesterday... very frightening.
Have everything needed for Thanksgiving and starting to think about Christmas decorating right after. That will cheer things up inside and out when the weather is dreary. Your drying roses are just beautiful Blessings, Laura

    1. Dear Laura, I had not even heard of purple level until this week. I am glad you have what you need for Thanksgiving. I am thinking the same thing, that Christmas decorating and creating that atmosphere is what we need. Adding joy to the home! Stay safe there. With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Dear Annabel,

I don't even know what to say. It's all such a crazy whirlwind. Like you say, things change so fast!!! I don't know. I have this feeling that even when the coronavirus scare is over, we won't be free from a lockdown mindset in the minds of the government, for whatever happens to crop up in the future that would benefit (for them) from crowd control. The precedent is set, unfortunately. I am happy to be proven wrong in the future, but it's hard not to be a little pessimistic/wary at the moment. But these are thoughts I have in my worst moments, and most of the time I concentrate on the good, lovely, pure...and think joyful thoughts, as He is in control. And as you say, steps in the right direction are those that spread kindness and thoughtfulness to others, including around our own homes. Our circle of control is perhaps small, when we think in terms of world events, but the ripples echo outwards for untold reverberating effects for good!!!

The blanket you crocheted for Sidney is GORGEOUS. A great pattern and color that can grow along with him. The pictures you took of your roses are just gorgeous, too...I can smell them from here!

Almost done all of my Christmas shopping. My hubby is the hardest to prepare for, so I have a few things left to organize for him. We have to go into the city at the end of November to drop off some items for Missions to Seafarers, and I hope that will be the last time we will go to the city before Christmas. I hate crowds, and it is starting to get busy. I think some panic buying is starting, which, combined with Christmas buying, is not going to be a pretty scene!!!

I pray for a reduced bushfire season for you this year...last year was so horrific; it would be nice to have a bit of a break from so much crisis!!!

Thank you for continuing to put up such encouraging posts.

    Lots of love,

    Jen in NS

    1. Dear Jen,
Your aren't wrong. On even our mainstream news I hear the terms "The Great Reset". "One world order" and "the dark winter" ... before this was not on mainstream media but it has been the last few weeks. Yes God is in control. We know this was coming through scripture. But truthfully I didn't think in my life time.
With your beautiful work I feel honoured you liked the blanket.
I also do not like crowds and they are no longer a good idea anyway. It is lovely what you make for this mission.
Yes we would love a break from fires! 2020 has been the year that just keeps on giving. (Im rolling my eyes here..)
Many thanks Jen, With love Annabel.xxx

  7. Dear Annabel (and Beautiful Bluebirds!!),

There is one part of your post that made me laugh! ......

“So the week was re arranged. I got on with other stuff. I had roses to dry so I hung up little bunches around the kitchen...”

I love the Australian sense of humour, particularly responses when under duress!! haha!! Haha!!

I love that you have your signature pinks and softness in your photographs, too!! They are very therapeutic to the eyes!!

For me, building up my life has been about difficult times steering us closer to the Almighty’s direction for us. I actually think that we can do better in the darker times, because then we can be more focussed on the great Shepherd who walks before us, if we ask Him. Getting on with practising my music is also part of this! Praising the Almighty has a powerful effect for us, no matter where we are.

Yet again, my paid work has been mainly gardening!! Haha!! I weed and feed and mulch ..... and prune a little ...... and weed and mulch ...... and prune and shelter plants from the heat, and dig soil and ...... Haha!! I love it!! People just need help out there!

I find that there is a need for purpose in people, and what a lift it gives for everyone to search people out and lend a helping hand! I find that sharing some tiramisu from Aldi is also pretty useful, and economical!! haha!!

    I love your work!!

I am glad you have gardening paid work. And I agree that difficulties have us focusing on God much more. This is true.
God gives us that purpose. There is so much need and things to do. With love, Annabel.xxx

  8. Not only was that person deceitful and caused such harm to so many, they have also gotten away with it as they cannot be prosecuted under current laws! Natural justice/karma or whatever you like to call it will descend on this person.
We too have had the heat, high winds and smoke from bushfires. The fire is on Fraser Island, just off our coast. My asthma and allergies meds have been my first best friends. I set my little mobile cooler with air purifier up in the sewing room. Cobber dog and I are spending a lot of time up there in the cool and breathable air. The winds have changed overnight and the smoke is no longer hanging around. Time to air the house out and wash the smoke smell out of the household linens.
This week I felted another pumpkin and made another fabric covered rope basket. These two go together and will be gifted to Mum for Christmas. The felted pumpkin is a large pincushion that I will put pins in, and the basket has fluted edges to place quilting clips on.
Bluey and I have been planning a new garden bed, where the chooks temporary accommodation was. We have missed the optimal planting time and have decided to plant a green manure crop instead. This will give the soil(sand) a boost, add mulch and compost. By the time the green manure crop has been through it's growing cycle we will be back to our optimal planting time.
I have been given a Grandie request for a Granny Cardi made out of Rapunzel fabric. The DIL sent me the fabric. Now to get that made.
    Life is good.

    1. It’s nice to read your report over here, Jane! I think the first comments that I ever read of yours were along the lines of old-fashioned passionfruit cordial!! ...... I think that mobile coolers are just the thing for some people; I bought one for my Dad! I also found that we can buy cooling mats for pets from Bunnings. Well, two cooling mats together might make a cool place for Dad to sleep, too! Haha!! .....Now you have chooks!!

    2. Dear Jane,
This person will not win any popularity awards but the odd way the world works now they will probably end up on Dancing with the Stars.
You are going great with your felting. I really liked the pumpkin! And I love the rope baskets!
You have inspired me on the dresses. I have two little ones cut up. I hope sewn up tomorrow. You will approve of the fabric I will show you when I am done. Mum used to sew little dresses when I had Chloe. Little cool cotton dresses. I still have every one!
I need to look for Rapunzel fabric as this is a strong theme here also! We both lived in smoke this week. You still got loads done! With love,

  9. What a week for you in SA! What a year in general!!
Your preparedness is certainly paying off big time, and a lesson for us all.

I deep cleaned my kitchen this week, it has been something I have been wanting to do for simply ages, but never seemed to make the time to do, probably because it is such a big job. I took everything out of the cupboards, cleaned everything inside and out, decluttered and rearranged it all again, it took me 2 full days, and I still haven't quite finished, and all in the heat and humidity that has crept into the Northern Rivers this past week, I literally had sweat running down my front and back! Ugh! But it is done now, it is clean and sparkling, and ready for Christmas :)

This coming week, I plan to do all my Christmas baking, I'm really looking forward to it, and it will be a huge preparedness job done.

I don't watch the news, so I didn't hear about the person who lied about their Covid exposure, I will have to read about it online. What a stupid and selfish thing to do. There's no accounting for some people's actions is there?

Anyway have a good week Annabel, I look forward as usual to next weeks post.

  10. I look forward to your posts every week. Your blanket is beautiful and I love all your roses and food you have cooked ahead. So sorry that you had to go through that ordeal about the covid and now the fires. I hope they will be under control soon and you won't have to go through what you went through before. We are in red alert here now with the covid and the hospital is full. I try to be careful and pray we don't get it and am concerned about the mess our country is in but God is in control. Is there a place where we can read Laine's old letters? I am looking forward to her new one. Nancy

  11. What a crazy week you have all had! I read in the papers this morning about that idiot who caused your latest lockdown - how disgraceful that he can't be prosecuted for something!

Good to read that you and your family are so well prepared - I never doubted it for a moment! I cannot believe that people are still so ill-prepared after all this time!

Toronto is going back into lockdown as of one minute past midnight Monday morning - so no doubt the shops will be packed this weekend. I will not be joining them. My pantry and small fridge/freezer are stocked and I went to the shops a couple of times this past week to pick up dairy and fresh fruit & veg as I could see the writing on the wall. I am picking up a new laptop from the office on Tuesday morning and then I'll be able to work from home a lot more easily. I'll only go into the office maybe every couple of weeks to do things that I can't do from home.

As always your craft work is gorgeous - those beautiful roses and the lovely knitted throw - you are very talented!

I do hope that the fires are nowhere near as scary as last year - that is the last thing any of you need. I will pray for rain and that you all get a reprieve from that anxiety.

    Have a good week.

  12. I don't comment often, but I do look forward to your posts every Friday! You are a dear and such an inspiration. I live in Florida, USA. Did not know about your lockdown; but I have been avoiding the news since our election ended. Too upsetting.

I am not crafty, but do have a very deep pantry. My local store had NO toilet paper or paper towels yesterday. I did not need them; I am fully stocked. But, it was upsetting to see. Also, just a few boxes of Kleenex tissue as well.

We are 73 and 77 so are basically isolating except for grocery. We do take drives on occasion just to see some scenery! Many people we know do not believe in the masks or avoiding crowds, so we avoid those people!!!

They say a vaccine is right around the corner...how do you and people in Australia feel about getting the vaccine? My hubby and I are leery...

Take care and carry on! Sending hugs from afar...

    1. You are wise to be careful. Taking a drive is a nice way to get out at low risk. Well personally I am also very leery as you say. No vaccine has ever been developed so fast. I will be more leery if they try and force it on people which I am expecting. We will see!
I have many friends in the US and I feel sorry things are upsetting you but I understand it. Everyone is worried and upset as far as I can see.
Having our home as our sanctuary is important and it sounds like you are doing that. With love Annabel.xxx

  13. Dear Annabel, Continual preparedness is the new order of the day. I have to remind myself to stay prepared because our state's 0 cases statis feels nice and after a while inspires a false sense of security. I had a few hours in town yesterday while DD was at her first attend-able birthday party this year, it was held over the border in a neighboring state who have a few more freedoms - she had a great time. Despite the heat of the day I managed to finish my Christmas shopping. It feels very good. I am glad I have done what I have done as last week and the one to come have suddenly become overly busy and I won't have time to do anything. Our town has come alive again with visitors and is once again busy and a bit too crowded. My plan, especially this year, is to be able to stay out of town as much as possible through December. Love Clare

    1. Dear Clare,
I am so glad your daughter could have such a nice time out! It is great you have done all your Christmas shopping! Yes we had 0 cases then now we have I think 26 or something a week later... with the lock down in between. So it can all change in a blink. It is good to be prepared for so many reasons and also avoid the crowds, rush and even panic.
I dont like shopping in December either. I dont like queues or crowds even in the best of times. Have a good new week Clare, with love Annabel.xxx

  14. Glad to hear Laine's writing again.
I have been ill for 2 weeks. Not covid. I had a terrible infection in my cancer side breast that lead to emergency surgery to remove the implant and the infection. I am now homebound for 2 weeks.
