Feather your Nest Friday, 16th October, 2026.

Hello everyone.  We made it to another Friday!  My Grandchildren are all back to school.   Everyone is healing.  I am very grateful. Thank you to everyone who prayed and for your kind messages.

My downfall is I did not reply to comments last week.  I am really sorry because I appreciate your comments and kindness so much and usually I reply to all or almost all.    But each break I got this last week I slept.   It is as though I could not sleep enough and I slept like a log.  Then at night, no problem, I slept like a log again.   And this was very healing and calmed my nervous system down a lot.   I began to feel much better.  I do apologise though.

We have had some true Spring days and I have flowers!   Getting a garden really going form nothing and in sand took a few years.  But now I have lots of flowers in my garden beds.

I wanted to continue to sew even if just a little bit.  So... I started some pot holders for my own kitchen as mine are pretty worn out.  I dug through all my trims and ribbons and found a braid that matched these.

I also did some more for the gift cupboard.  This trim is very old.   But it matches!    I am thinking.very much on how we can have supplies and resources...  we just need to do the nextt step to turn them into assets.

For Mum I made afternoon tea and sent her home with scones.

I made back to school treat boxes for my older Grandchildren and Honey Gingerbread so they had one tin each.   Plus Butter chicken, raita,  lasagne and spaghetti.

In the garden I have been picking bunches of broccolini.   I have never grown this before.  It was an accident as I had expired seeds which were sold for sprouting.  I threw them in a couple of garden beds and did not expect them to come up.
Not caring and not expecting anything is key to making every single one come up.   I then began to thin them out by potting them up and sharing them.

Chloe got a lot of them.    So we are both harvesting broccolini.     Tom considered them his plants as he did most of the planting.

Now they are harvesting he eats them up and insists everyone eat every last trace since there was a lot of work to get to this point.   So next thing Chloe had him in charge of cooking them.  Great success and my best success on seeds ever!

I have a huge amount of broccolini leaves and many are going to the chooks but I plan to turn some into green power too.

It was a special day so the kids made pavlova (with Mum) too.

The boys came over yesterday.    We harvested a whole heap of celery....

And a whole lot of Silverbeet.

Some with holes and snails went to the chooks so they got a big feed too.

The boys collected the eggs and fed the chickens.

We collected some big sticks to use as new perches.

A couple of weeks ago Tom asked if he could have an old roller.   I don't think it had rolled or moved in twenty years.   So I said sure and my helpers used the tractor and trailer and Tom took it home.  😊

This week he got to roll something!!

It was a  pad for a little garden shed.   Never has a boy rolled something so happily (or for so long) as this.  I asked him how long did he roll that thing for?   He said "about eight hours."

Lots of sunshine was enjoyed.   And the cows are in the driveway eating down the jungle and having a wonderful time.

On Chloe's track I saw a pair of Echidnas but I was not quick enough to get both in the photo... one went back into the grass.   But they poke along and are so sweet.

Since some ready made meals came out of the freezer I have freezer space.  Today I went to the butcher.  I stood and looked in the window.   I had ideas.  But it was $187 for a beef roast.  Other ideas did not seem to work out much better.  So I walked away.

There are stressed people everywhere.  People in need.  The lady at the supermarket check out (who is always cheerful) was crying.  I asked her was there anything I could do to help and she shook her head unable to speak.   My friend noticed the same thing.

But also...we went to Mass and were showered in love and took eggs and books.... Mum passes the books she reads on to a lady and I take her two or three a week.   She lights up every time!

My seedlings are doing well.  This sunshine will do them good.

So overall it was a much better week.  Once again I was told to read Psalm 91 every night before bed.  I am bad with numbers but I knew it!  And that is very good advice and I intend to make this my new habit.xxx

  1. Annabel, what a full and amazing week you have had. I am so very happy to hear all your family is n the mend, prayers for all.
I love how the boys love getting involved with all the work on the farm and are learning so much.
Prayers for you dear, it sounds like the sleep has helped you, sometimes our bodies tell us just what we need.

We have had a full week here. It flew by. Between doctor visits and blood work we were out of the house quite a bit. We took advantage of that and added in some errands.
We had little bits of this and that leftover in the frig, so a tiny bit of cooked carrots and a half of a sweet potato became muffins. There was less than a cup of mashed potatoes leftover from 2 dinners so those were transformed into 2 loaves of bread. Oh the house smelled so good. There were 2 ripe bananas frozen and another one over ripe so those became cookies. We made one rotisserie chicken last 3 dinners and made chicken salad for 2 lunches. I forgot to save the bones for broth.

We are in winter prep mode here, linens has been changed over to flannels, blankets all washed in our family room and one added into a car. We took advantage of a very good sale on tires and replaced tires on on car for safety sake during the winter.
We used gift cards on that purchase and on our grocery purchase to save as the gift cards were free. $80 on the tires and $40 on the groceries, we still have one more card for $65.

We are sitting waiting on the birth of our first great granddaughter, Our grandson's fiance will be induced this morning at 8am. Praying for a safe delivery for both Mom and baby.

  4. Greeetings, Annabel... so glad to hear everyone is on the mend, that you've been able to rest up. and what a beautiful garden! Broccolini is a favorite of mine; it's so much more tender than regular broccoli (also a favorite since I was a tiny girl).

Your meat prices there are... WOW! I can't imagine. We've been eating down freezer meat for a few months and it was time to restock, so I went to the local butcher for his "Bovine Bundle"--5 large roasts, 14 steaks, and 10 lb. ground beef for $365, 10% off with cash payment, all certified Angus. Boneless skinless chicken thighs and pork loin roasts were BOGO. The chest freezer is full again. Prices here are coming down. Eggs are staying stable at $1.49 dozen or $2.49 for 18 count. Dairy and produce are also seeing good deals. Praying the trend continues and spreads.

What a joy it is to see what your grandchildren are up to each week. Tom may grow up to be a farmer. He'll certainly be a good cook, too. Beautiful pictures--as always. I just love your cows.

    Have a blessed week ahead,
    Elise in AZ's White Mountains

    1. Dear Elise, You did great on the meat! Eggs here are $8 to $15 a dozen! Tom has already decided he's a farmer. I doubt there will be any changing his mind. Thank you for your kind words!! With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Hi Annabel
No apologies needed for not replying to comments, no one would have expected you to! Glad you've been getting sleep and the family are healing.
Tom has so many future careers to consider, chef, gardener, farmer to name a few. Goodness, the cost of beef! I thought it was expensive in the UK but that's crazy.
    Your pot holders are lovely.
We are living in Tomatoville . I keep picking, saucing, freezing etc and they keep coming. I have to remind myself sometimes not to moan about it. We gave tomatoes and a squash to a friend in return for figs and gave frozen gooseberries and blackcurrants to another friend. We've eaten squash, tomatoes, aubergine, cucumber, potatoes, green peppers, chilli and cooking apples from the garden.
I cut flowers for a bouquet for a friend, for church and for an arrangement we did at floral group. I have also foraged berries etc from the hedgerows.
Today I planted spring bulbs - tulips, narcissus and alliums.
I have had some good shopping deals- money off vests for my granddaughter, shoes for me in a sale and money off vouchers for eggs and butter. I found a deal on chicken thighs and sausages and instead of freezing them straightaway I cooked them all up,then shredded some of the chicken and froze it and made a bumper chicken curry with the rest.
I've started buying toys and dry goods I will need at Christmas. I keep a list in my bag to remind me of what I need.
My husband used free wood to make another small boot rack to keep things tidy.
Hope we all have a quiet, peaceful week.

    1. Dear Penny, Thank you so much. I would love to be in tomatoville. I hope to be maybe in about 6 weeks! I love your trading and gifts of flowers.
You had great shopping too. And cooking the chicken and getting it to the next step is good too. I kind of plan to do that this week as I bought chicken and am going to make up trays of enchiladas and freeze those.
I love the things your husband makes and I think of the plant supports he builds and all the sticks I have... but I think they are made of willow. Anyway I love them and admire them! He could start a business with those!!
I hope much more still comes in before the very end of the harvest. With much love Annabel.xxx

  6. "...we just need to do the next step to turn them into assets."

My husband and I have started to look at our things as assets or potential assets. It's a much more positive way to look at all the things in our home. So we ask ourselves questions like is this an asset or potential asset or if so is it worth repairing or keeping? I know I feel much more blessed when I think of things as assets! Surprisingly, looking at my fabric stash as an asset has been motivating me to sew more!

    1. Dear Margaret, Thank you! Currently... I am in this mode.... I have branches of Bay Leaves from Mums tree. I have dried them in vases. They are an asset waiting to happen. I am putting some in tins for my pantry and filling little window bags with 20 each for the Christmas gift cupboard. Then they are a huge asset as they are expensive to buy. I will show on Friday! But so many things we could do something with... even the pinecones in the driveway or whatever is around us. The fabric stash is most certainly a huge asset! With much love Annabel.xxx

    2. My son and his wife recently bought a new home that was fully furnished. They inventoried what was there and kept what they wanted, then moved in their own furniture. Much of the excess went to their former home, which is now leased, to fill gaps. They, too, began to look at their possessions as assets. They sold a pool table from the new house, refrigerator, lawnmower, etc.

They are big into skiing and mountain biking. My son works in the ski industry and gets unbelievable deals on equipment. He'll buy a set of skis, for example, ski on them for one season and sell them the next year for as much (or more) than he paid for them. He says the trick for the best price on sporting equipment is to advertise in specialized magazines, vs. Marketplace and other local advertising. They sold the pool table, refrigerator, etc., on Marketplace. The buyer for the pool table had to disassemble and haul it out--and they got $500. My son wanted it out and was on the verge of taking it apart with a chainsaw LOL.

  8. Dear Annabel, I am so very glad your grandchildren are healing and back to school. I am also glad you used your spare moments to sleep and heal yourself. I can safely say that none of us Bluebirds expected replies with the news you had had. I myself had a really down day yesterday (bit over myself and waiting to heal) , I couldn't manage to do anything so took myself off to bed for the afternoon. I feel much better today. Not a lot of feathering of my nest has been happening lately, however in the theme off every little thing helps I used a grabber stick to collect pine cones that had fallen from our tree in our drive way where they were getting run over and flattened, they are now safely in a basket to use as next Winter fire starters. The fresh air did me good too. Also this week I had one chicken hatch from a rogue hen sitting on loads of eggs but no others hatched. And a dear cousin visited with a delivery of a beautiful white hydrangea, lots of sprouted sunflower seedlings and cucumber seedlings for me which my husband helped me plant. It was very thoughtful of her. I love hearing about your grandchildren. Tom with the roller is such a great farm boy story. He will be a resourceful young man, as will all your grandchildren. I so don't like the trend of people complaining about their children and then teenagers not doing anything when they as parents never taught them anything or helped them lean into life by exposing them to different interests. I feel it is why a lot of teenagers seem depressed. Love to all the Bluebirds, Clare

    1. Dear Clare, Well I can agree with you that on a bad day like that bed is a fair enough solution and you have been an absolute trooper through A LOT! I love to collect pinecones! They are so good and like decorations in baskets. But in winter they are valuable fire starters. My trees out the back produce giant sized ones but also many of the cockatoos get them. But I collect some every time I walk to the chook house. I also sometimes get one random chicken hatch! I wish I could get a whole 12 or something!! The hydrangea will be just right for some of your sheltered areas out the back! Lovely. I am not good at sunflowers but as soon as the cows are out I am going to plant some and hope for the best! Clare I think we have to teach the kids to be capable and be proud of their work! And we never stop learning all our lives. I love to teach them a new thing. I remember things Nana taught me and think of her when I do them! I hope you are feeling heaps better. With love Annabel.xxx

  9. Dear Annabel, it is great news everyone is back to school and your grandchildren are recovering well. A routine is a good thing and it always feels good to be back in it. I am so happy you rested and slept instead of replying. Seeing your grandchildren on the farm is so precious. That broccolini looks delicious! Your photos are beautiful. Lots of love, Bridget

  10. Dear Annabel,
So thankful that Harper, Scarlett, and Sidney are recovering well.
Love all your hot pads. I intend to make some that resemble pies.

Thanks for sharing "Tom's adventures and conquests". 😁
So exciting to see your grands growing and learning.

My week has been full of baking, harvesting and canning tomatoes, and prepping a box of yellow peppers for the freezer. As I am job hunting again, I am a driver for 2 young doctors. One is from India and the other from Pakistan. They are also paying me to teach them to drive. Such fun! I am really enjoying getting to know these young women.
Life has been very hard with my husband. We remain separated. He has been in the hospital twice in the last 4 weeks. He has had some serious blood clots in his lungs. And our first marriage counseling session did not go well, either.

Going to go rake leaves and bake cookies with my youngest daughter.
    Blessings to all Bluebirds,
    Leslie (OH)

I love your job! How interesting!! I am sure you are a great teacher!! I bet they love you!
Leslie thank you for sharing what you have about your husband. I know that you have been very faithful in doing the right thing. And you give marriage counselling a big try even if it does not go well I know you are trying. Also when someone is sick... this is even more complicated but we can be kind and compassionate in ways that we can do... and I am sure you are. I am praying for you I think you are fantastic for all you do and keep going you are inspiring to me. With much love Annabel.xxx
