Feather your Nest Friday, 10th July, 2026.

Well... here we go again.  It was another epic week of produce.   Maybe a record breaker.  πŸ˜Š

I continued to use things that came in and made up a batch of Lemon Butter.   Tom filled a sponge and once it was topped with whipped cream he had a desert for his family.

He also took home a jar of Lemon Butter for on toast in the morning.  So that was ten lemons put to good use.

But the star of the week was the orange.   Last week we had picked oranges and asked the man if we could come back with a ladder....  and lived to tell the tale....

My friends tall husband and our long ladder saved the day.

My friend and I had prepared our trades/gifts for the man.   He was most happy.  I think we may have sewn up the deal for the future.  He threw in a pumpkin!

I took Jam and Broccoli seedlings.

Today we went back with lumps of steel.  Yes steel.

It ended up being 120 kilos.  (More than 240 pounds.)  And plenty were left on the tree for others.

I call this success!

So far we have shared with the church family today and with St Vinnies yesterday.

Every day I am juicing.  Every time I go to Chloe's I take juice.  Chloe gives back the empty for a new full one.

Next week I will make orange cakes and lemon cakes.

I picked more broccoli in the garden and also took some for a lady at Mass today.   This is ganging up on me so I will need to cook some or make soup.

I potted up stacks more Broccoli seedlings and took some of those to church as well and another tray to the swap tables.  I have so many I will do this again next week.  Gosh they went over well, so did the oranges!

There is another lady at church whole loves nice books to read. She has the same taste as Mum.  So when Mum finishes a book I take it to this lady... which equals about three a week.   She then passed them on to her sister and they both get som much joy out of them!

This wee was sunny almost every day.  Water is laying in the paddocks from last week.  So this sun is making everything grow!  It is wonderful.  Tomorrow the rain gets going again but we all have backloads of vitamin D all week and boatloads of vitamin C thanks to oranges!

In the op shop I found a big box of embroidery threads.   Some for hand sewing but most machine reels.  The entire collection was $3.

I knew this stuff is expensive and grabbed it.
AND I got a brand new thermal cooker for $10.  I thought with electricity becoming a big issue this could be a very good thing to have.   Now I need to study the book.

I found a sweet little jug some fabric plus my friend gave me the most gorgeous fabric ever!

Last week my kitchen Island arrived.... it is now put together and in the kitchen... next I need to settle it in and set it up.  I love it!

If you have been following along you will know on the first day of the war in the Middle East I decided to put my head down and work on my pantry and preparedness and put up any food that came my way.  From that day to this (Feb 28 - ) produce has come at me like meteors.  I came home from an outing and this pumpkin was sitting on my veranda rail.  Like a calling card I knew who would have left it.

I was also given a bag of onions.

So this week it wasn't less,  due to it being mid winter and all... it was MORE.    AND a man arrived late afternoon to stay the weekend in the cabin....  he came with a huge heavy box of vegetables...  It is dark now and I was unpacking groceries from the ute and I have not even unpacked this box to see what is in it!   But it is another 10 or 15 kilos of veggies!  I will take some photos of it tomorrow as I wash and sort everything.  I am excited to do this but I have reached my limit for today!

I am now up to hundreds of kilos of free food and all I did was hear God say "don't look over your shoulder" and to get on with my work.  So that is what I have done all these weeks and still this is the  case.  I would never have though this possible.

In my old blog (The bluebirds are Nesting) I shared how I first began my pantry.  I started with a weekly budget of $8 which I turned into $16 by buying things that were on half price specials.  After a year it was absolutely amazing how many supplies I had!

Currently Patsy at A Working Pantry  is having a $5 a week pantry building challenge.   You can absolutely build a deep pantry with a small amount.  And a challenge is fun so I am in!  A Working Pantry challenge.     I will post there weekly how I did.  The time to start a deep pantry is five years ago but failing that it is now.   I am still learning  so much that I can immediately implement from Urban QLD Homestead. She had four videos this week I can use!  Right now!   There is more to do than hours in the day but if I write myself a list I seem to get a lot more of it done.

Tonight Chloe gave me a tray of Parsley seedlings.  I will pot them up to gift and trade when they grow up a bit.  Then I think I will get back to cotton wash cloths as they were a great trade item.

Next week I have a lot of apples that need using.  I've had hints to make more apple crumbles!  I like that idea so I will see how many I can get!

I hope it was a good week for you.  My thoughts are on stewardship.... wise investments (on many levels) and how there is so much joy in small things.

Tomorrow we celebrate Chase's birthday.  He will be four.  Before that I plan to sleep in!  xxxx

  1. Dear Annabel,

You were right… I did laugh when I saw just how many oranges you came home with! 🍊 What an incredible harvest.

What really stood out to me though wasn’t just the amount of produce, but the way it continues to flow from one person to another. I loved reading about the oranges, broccoli seedlings, books and all the little trades and gifts. There is something so lovely about seeing good things shared rather than simply stored away.

Your thoughts on stewardship really resonated with me too. I think there is so much joy in using what we have well and then passing some of it on to bless others.

I hope you enjoy a well-earned sleep in, and happy birthday to Chase! xox

    1. Thank you Stephanie! We go to Mass with little boxes. Many are elderly and I am the "young one" haha. I snuggle eggs amongst whatever I have. Elderly pensioners are not doing well with the cost of food as you would know. They are excited over anything from the farm. I have many more broccoli seedlings to pot up and they are growing fast. I had a totally restful weekend... and back on deck for Monday. Have a really good week! Love Annabel.xxx

  2. Annabel, what a lovely and productive week you have had. A true blessing with the oranges, I do believe the gentleman will trade with you in the future.
So glad everything is growing well. Your garden and orchard have to look beautiful. Happy birthday to Chase, he will be having his visits with grandma, like Tom soon.

We have had a busy week, it seems to have just disappeared. I baked lemon blueberry bread from fruit in frig and made sweetened condensed milk rolls. Since we have had high heat here our meals have been salads and wraps.

I am still working on granny squares, haven't made them in 2 days because we have been to busy with other things. Husband decided to change out the cheap wire shelves in a pantry with plywood, 75 inches long by 20 inches deep shelving, which meant emptying it, painting, building the shelves and then reorganizing. We are donating so much we ran out of boxes and had to use shopping bags. We also finally tossed a lot of saved plastic containers. So things look so much better. We also now definitely know what we have and what we need.
We will be starting my spice shelves next that is 5 foot tall, 8 foot long and 1 1/2 ft deep. So things will be more organized and categorized now. Our pantries will be in such better shape. A lot of work though as I know Annabel definitely knows.

We need to get our homes in order, so what we can to stock our pantries and pray.

    2. Dear Rosanne, A great week! Your pantry will be in much better shape and a big empty out and re arrange is a fair job but worth it. I have found I have less than I thought I did in some areas because there was non food things like plastic ware... and when I got rid of that I have more room to stock up.
Have a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx

  3. Happy birthday, Chase!

Annabel, it was a pleasure reading your words and, as ussual, I pick up some good ideas from you. I will look up th pantry challenge, I take strength from all of you.

I harvest something from the garden and the chicks and duck every day - it feels such a beautiful life. Also, we ride the local market for good prices and localy grow or heirloom vegetables/fruits. I take home all the bruised or not good for sale product and my chickens throw a party.

These days I would like to have 27 hours a day to be able to finish all my projects.
I have an order to make a few pillow cases so my sewing machine comes out to work. Thinking of my grandmother, she was doing that kind of things for other neighbours.

Wishing you all a nice weekend and see you next time.

    2. Dear Laura, I am so glad you can get hold of the produce for your chickens! This is valuable! And harvesting and bringing in eggs each day is beautiful!. I know you would put everything to good use and appreciate it.
Probably you have completed the pillow cases by now... it is great you have orders. Have a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx

  4. One time our pastor asked the congregation do you give thanks every time you eat?
He said most of us don’t know what it is like to go hungry ( real hunger ).
He reminded us that all throughout history there has been want. Famines , Wars, Droughts , Blockades, Starvation, Pestilence, Economic Collapse.
He reminded us how before we open our mouth to eat we should have thanksgiving on our lips. He said gently never take your daily bread for granted, it can disappear so quickly, even in this modern time.
That has stuck with me. It is so wonderful to see you take these resources and turn around and bless people with it.
I believe people are seeing that true wealth is Hearth and Home . A table full of food to share and family and friends to enjoy it with. Heartwarming to see younger generation wanting to return to the land.
Your Broccoli is absolutely gorgeous by the way.

  5. Dear Annabel,
I'm always amazed at how blessed you are with produce the minute you get a new gadget. Like when you bought your freeze dryer, then boom!
Well done on the oranges. Tom's cake looks great.
I agree with Stephanie on how there seems to be a domino effect in giving in your life. Even when you share with us, we learn from each other and give to those near us.

My week began with a 4 am opossum attack on my chickens. Fortunately, only one hen was hurt. And that was with just scratches on her face. My eldest son is staying with us and was available to help me. The opossum did meet it's end.

I'm enjoying a new to me YouTube channel: Becoming a Farmgirl. She really challenged me to eat up older items in my pantry. I made some amazing quinoa bowls with canned chicken, kidney beans, rice and salad greens. Now I have chocolate peppermint bark setting up in the freezer. It is using up some old candy canes. 😜

Another way I saved $: homemade snacks to go. My son, Connor, and I made energy balls for him to take with him to wrestling camp. His teammates loved them, as well. Smoothies, and iced coffee for other travelers in the household.

My daughter, Phoebe and I traveled to watch Connor's exhibition matches at the conclusion of camp.
The long drive was shortened by her reading aloud to me a family favorite book (The Mysterious Benedict Society).
My son had outgrown some cargo pants. He now has 3 "new" pair of cargo shorts. I also completed some mending. And some jean scraps quickly became a hot pad.
I enjoyed a quick shop at the thrift store for a queen sized bed sheet. While there I found a ball of wool yarn and a ball of cotton yarn for dish cloths. And a DVD for my husband and one for my eldest son. Phoebe found a lepord print coat to spend her allowance on. 😁

Hope all Bluebirds safe and busy.
    Happy birthday to Chase!

    1. Dear Leslie, You are right!! Remember when I got all those jars and I said well God must be going to send me a lot of produce? Now I have the citrus juicer it just works all the time. Now lemons are coming at me!
Sorry I am a week late replying. Today, Sunday, I am catching up!
Connor would have loved taking the energy alls to camp.
Becoming a farm girl sounds familiar to me.. I will go check her out!
I am sorry about the attack on the chickens! Hearing the noise though saved them! Thankfully! I have lost chickens to foxes and it's terrible. Have a fantastic new week! With love Annabel.xxx

  6. Dear Annabel,

First off, Happy Birthday to Chase!!! Your Tom is getting to be quite the pastry chef! Ha, ha.

I am absolutely amazed at the sheer volume of produce you keep receiving...mostly for free! And all that you pass on to others...what a blessing on both ends, so to speak! I've been working like crazy with my head down all this week, too. In fact, I've hardly turned on the computer at all, and it's amazing how much you can get done that way! Ha, ha. My garden is finally all in, after we were gone for a week during prime planting time in June. It's a bit late, but we have a long Fall, so it should be ok. Everything is growing great guns, as we are having nice, sunny, hot weather. I'm also doing some massive decluttering, so that is making me feel really great, too.

Can't wait to see what you've been up to next week! xx Jen in NS

This week it looks like more free produce will come in the form of lemons. Well there is a lot I can do with lemons. But Im still working on oranges and now the last of the apples.
Have a good new week... With much love Annabel.xxx

  8. Dear Annabel, that story about the oranges is beautiful. I just love how you swapped wonderful things and then it didn’t end there- the oranges benefitted your family and community. I love hearing about all your produce coming in. I also love that you get those seedlings planted and shared. All that gardening and produce makes me happy. Happy birthday to Chase! I’m looking forward to reading about his adventures on the farm. Our little dog cost a fortune at the vet this week. Lucky we had money aside for a rainy day. It has been school holidays here. My bike was broken but my husband fixed it for $30! He is clever. Now we can go on bike rides again. I’ve got a tonne of bananas to use up. I’m dehydrating a lot now. I’ll freeze a lot. I’ll give away a few bunches and some I’ll turn into banana cakes. It’s cool to see how far they can go. Unfortunately I haven’t had much time to garden. However, I do plan on crocheting a little this afternoon. Lots of love, Bridget

  9. Wow1 you really have been blessed. I am hoping to move out in to the 'country
next year where things are easier to barter for and with. My dauguter has a place on 5 acres and I am (hopefully) going to be able to put a tiny house out there. I want to have a small container garden area and some fruit trees. There is already a Mulberry bush/tree so that is something.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well the man has a forge and he uses steel to make things. And I have a farm dump with various metals that have accumulated over the years including steel. The man was very happy to get some steel as he melts it and crafts things. My friends husband was talking to him and thats how this came about. So that was a surprising trade!

  12. Hi Annabel
I hope Chase had a lovely birthday. Tom's cake looked so good.
The oranges are sunshine aren't they, the juice looks so refreshing. What a good find on the thread and fabric, you will make good use of them I'm sure.
Life is very much about the garden at the moment. We have picked blackcurrants and frozen some, lettuce, basil, courgettes, spring onions and potatoes. We have shared some with neighbours too.
We have harvested the shallots, onions and garlic and they are spread in the sun to dry before we store them.
I've cut seed heads and allium to dry for winter arrangements in the house and we have planted out seedlings of cosmos and nasturtiums. We've taken cuttings of plants we want to propagate, potted on seedlings and cleared a bed of spent annuals ready to plant up for autumn flowers . I cut big ornamental cardoon heads for the house and took a bouquet of flowers to a friend. I'm sorry if this sounds like a gardening manual but growing and storing our own food is central to our lives and the government can't tax it! We feel like the prudent ants storing up food for the winter.
I made a low sugar malt loaf for the family.
Our son in law gifted us some sea fish he had caught and prepared them for us for the freezer.
At a charity fundraiser I won a voucher for 2 people to have Sunday lunch at a local pub restaurant, a bottle of wine I will gift to family and some nice coffee I will give to the food bank.
I sorted through books I have read and sold some online to a book reseller.
First aid 'pantry' to the rescue again, this time medication we had on hand to treat our dog for a minor ailment. Our daughter is a vet so we knew what the minor problem was and what to do.
I hope all Bluebirds are finding opportunities to feather their nests.

    1. Dear Penny, Sorry to be late with my reply. Wow what a great week. I love how you balance produce and flowers. The fish for your freezer!! The Sunday lunch and wine!! Big bonuses to your week! How handy your daughter is a vet! Sparkie had something in her eye recently. It was really bothering her. So I treated her like a human and used an eye cup of water and repeatedly washed her eye out. Well it worked! I would say you are stilll in the thick of harvesting and gardening. Having so much to harvest is wonderful but also because you put the work into it to get to this point! With much love Annabel.xxx
