Feather your Nest Friday, 19th June, 2026.

It was a very busy week.  It seems like a year since last Friday but I often say that!   There has been more rain which is so good.

My produce this week was mainly from my own garden!  I harvested a basket of Parsley. It had been rained on over and over and so fresh.

While I was picking this I could see a whole big bed of Parsley seed has come up and is doing really well.

I got four trays into the freeze drier and repeated that the next day.

I gave some to Chloe and added the rest to my pantry.

As I worked I saved the stems to freeze for my next batch of stock.

Also from my own garden I harvested some Broccoli.  I am so happy with it and have many more harvests to go!

Last week I mentioned purchasing a citrus juicer.  Oh my goodness I feel like a dill because this is a complete game changer and you also get more juice per fruit.   It is so quick!  If only I bought this a decade ago!

I juiced all the lemons in the kitchen and filled a one litre bottle.

Then I went into the garden and picked some more.

I know of a very full lemon tree to raid yet... but now my ambition is to get hold of lots of oranges. I think more mid to late winter will be the time as our state is really good for citrus trees.

I cut up pumpkin and three sweet potatoes that needed using.   This lot became soup.

I was given a beautiful basket of baby butternuts.  These are small enough to cut in half and roast them just like that.

Remember when I ordered Lamb scraps from the store and they sent me a roast?  Well I ordered again and they sent me lamb shanks.  I decided to freeze one and make one into bone broth.   The broth then became the base of Ike's first pumpkin puree.

The next day I used the bone broth and pumpkin but added the meat.   So this batch will follow the last.   Then he will be on his meat and veggies.  😊

I also took over a tray of frozen apple baby food.  So now he has variety.  He opens his mouth like a bird and his arms and legs go like an egg beater with excitement.

I made more apple crumbles.   I stopped putting the crumble on to take a photo of how simple I make these....  just slices, sprinkle of sugar, sprinkle of cinnamon....  cover well with a crumble.... butter, brown sugar, flour, muesli, cereal... whatever you have.  Taste it... if it tastes nice is will be good.

I got messages of appreciation anyway!

From the freezer I grabbed six litres, which I think is 1.5 gallons, of cream.   I thawed it out and made butter in four sessions.   I did weigh it and I got 3 kilos.... or 6.6 pounds of butter.

Plus a big jug of buttermilk.   Right now this is all in loaf pans in the fridge and tomorrow I need to slice, wrap and freeze it.   I looked up butter in our local store and it worked out to be $57 worth!    This was free as I traded for the cream with something else that was also free. 😎

I got to cut out more wool squares.  I only have a couple of pieces to cut up.  Then I will begin planning a lay out and sewing!   It is all beautiful pure wool.  A couple of pieces had holes.  Sparkie has new blankets!

My helper was here and it was sunny for a while that day.  The chooks got some spent broccoli plants and weeds.

I started using my bonus upright freezer in the shed.   This is where my butter will go when I get it wrapped up.   The rest will be fruit and veggies.   Taking out the tray of apples and the jugs of cream made some room in my chest freezer.

The fruit trees were pruned.  Tom is up in the cage helping.  Prune in June is how I remember!

The broccoli seeds that I planted came up.  A lot of them!  I don't know if they will actually grow to full size and produce but I hope so!   I will need to move and share some but I will wait until they are a little bigger to do that.

I did a grocery order again and you guessed it I ordered the lamb scraps.  This time I got three large lamb forequarter chops.  Beautiful.  These will give me three meals.  It's like a lamb lottery!

This bird comes for morning tea and lunch on the deck outside.   He is a little like a cartoon character.   Even while I was sitting at the table he was happy to pinch someone else's lunch.

My you tube for the week is -

Self sufficient Me.  He is really good.  I keep learning from him.  Very Australian!   Also funny.  This episode is motivation to get producing!

I worked every day on my pantry and home organisation.  You wouldn't think it possible to be working on a pantry this long!  It paints a grim picture of what it must have been like in the first place.  I am getting somewhere though and it is far far more organised.  I will keep going next week.

The stove in this house is sixty years old and I love it.  But fewer and fewer things are working.  I am thinking of facing up to getting a new stove.  So I am looking and considering.  But I am thinking if anything else stops working I am kind of in trouble.

When you are organising you find things.  And it has a domino effect that means you end up working on another area.  But it is wet and the fire is going... this is good weather for cooking and working on these projects.

How did you build up your nest this week?  Keep your eyes turned on to the "seeing opportunities" setting. xxx

  1. Annabel, what an amazing week you have had and your little helper is the best, he will make some girl an amazing husband.
I am so happy you purchased the citrus juicer, it is a time saver and hand saver. I have an attachment for my kitchenaid.
Ike has to be thrilled with all the new foods for him. Everything homemade and delicious.
I can't wait to see the wool blanket when completed.

Here my week slipped away on me. Truly I have no idea where it went. I have been using up all the little bits of food making new meals. I used up the blueberries in frig for blueberry crumble. Little bits of leftovers went on a pizza and others went on salads. Husband even added some to an omelet.
I had finished my baby set with hat, booties and blanket, so now I am working on a larger blanket, in a traditional granny square, I am using 2 strands of yarn throughout to make it warmer, again with yarn out of my stash. To give you a hint, I found the yarn at thrift stores with original sales tag on, some were 2/$1.00 Most of the yarn has sparkly treads running through it.
We are continuing working on keeping our pantry stocked with sale and reduced items. Husband hadn't looked at the back side of my list and had to go back into store to pick those items up. Just those items would have ran $12 and he paid $4, so worth going back in.
Summer is here and we are trying our best to keep the air conditioning off with the rise in utility costs, shades pulled down on sunny days and ceiling fans going. They are warning of another increase soon.
    Prayers for all Bluebirds!

    1. Dear Rosanne, You have made lots of beautiful baby things! Keeping the house comfortable in the hat is a big issue. I am guessing the basement would be the coolest room. The weeks are going fast I agree! With love Annabel.xxx

  2. Dear Annabel, so much accomplished in one week, and with Tom, a great helper! I wonder what a good life he will have, with all his knowledge he picks up now, half as a play time, half serious and proud?? I wish him all the best in life!!!!
I like your new friend, the cute bird. And the wool squares look exceptionally good.

Summer is here, we have beautiful weather, with rain, too. The garden is thriving and is a pleasure to work in it every day (after office time, from 8 till 17 five times a week) -This week I made pizza twice, with leftovers from the fridge that needed used up.. It was a succes, and both my boys took it as lunch next day to work.
    - I pick strawberries from my little strawberry patch and made a few jars of jam. Next will be the red and black currants.
-I planted some gifted cherry tomatoes for which I gave back a dozen eggs and, because it was too much just for me I gave half of the cherry tomatoes to my cousin who is building up a nice vegetable garden for the firts time and she gave me kitchen scraps for my chickens and some leftovers for the kitties. A whole circle ...
    - My husband fenced a new small garden patch planted with zuchini and buttersqash - it is growing nicely, the chickens, ducks or dogs can*t go inside and the new baby plants look nice and happy. It is programed to be food for the chickens and ducks for winter.
    - I have finished the knitted jumper but I got an order for another one.
    - On Saturday I have worked on two pieces of cloth from my wardrobe and made them like new. The skirt was a bit too short and I crocheted a granny square edge to it and now it is comfortable to wear at my age (knee high) and a dress I was gifted needed a bit of pretification - I also crocheted a lace around the base with green silk - now it has a bit of a classy touch, ready for wearing at the office on hot summer days.
    - To the person who buys as many eggs as I can spare I gifted a pound of wallnuts , peeled and ready for cakes.
    - I dyed my hair on my own, as usual, at home, saving a ton of money. I add this because my work coleagues are talking about the high prices they have to pay each time they go to their hairdresser. I smile and don*t say anything because I was a bit belitled about that frugality but it is by choice. Also, my manicure and pedicure are made by me at home, the traditional way. Growing up in a household full of gracious women, I was taught all kind of feminine tricks to use in hard times. During the dark times of the communism everything was grey - the clothes, the hair, the faces, the shoes and the atmosphere. And then My Grandmother, who was a good seemstress, My Aunt, who was a good crocheter and My Mother, who was a good knitter they were the colour, the common sense, the different, the elegance with the little you could afford. They taught me and my 3 cousins to make do and to turn to golden every little scrap. I love them for that and miss them a lot. Imagine what good advice I can hear from them now......

Sending lots of smiles, hugs and good wishes from far away,

    2. Dear Laura, What a beautiful post. I love the trading and I thought yes I love to come home with food for animals as much as humans. The way you added crochet to the skirt and crochet trim to the dress... these sounds so good and I want to see. I will check to see if you put them on instagram! Otherwise I beg you to send me photos!
I colour my hair too. Your description of communist days of everything being grey this image made me think of terrible things like the depression, concentration camps and war. Your hair is stunning and suits you so well. To be well groomed does not have to be costly! Also the power of some lipstick... this makes me thing of after the war and the depression how everyone went for colour like celebration! Your garden is sounding very successful! I hope it produces and produces. The Strawberry jam and pizza sound delicious! I loved reading all of this! With love Annabel.xxx

  3. Annabelle. Your weekly posts are a breath of fresh air in a smoggy world. Thank you! ♥️
Regarding your desire to replace your kitchen stove I must tell you that here in the US new electric stoves are nothing but junk! Oven temperatures vary to even 50 degrees above set point or they refuse to come back up to 350 after quickly inserting a tray of cookies. I have tried two different brands. I learned that the control boards are all made by one of three companies and used in every brand no matter the price. Right now I monitor my stove with an external temperature gauge so I can open the door if it starts approaching “burn the house down” temperature!! It is impossible to bake anything with yeast. Bread comes out doughy in the middle but plenty dark on the outside. So my advice to anyone thinking of upgrading would be if at all possible pay what it takes to fix your old range. And read the reviews. (I don’t know if you want to mention the two brands I’ve had trouble with but if so I will say that the first was GE and the second Whirlpool. )
It is very discouraging. And I don’t want one of those crazy wifi ones that seem to be the big thing now. No thank you! Just looking for an old reliable. Anyway, I wanted to pass on this warning. Buyer beware Much love,
    Vicky

    1. Dear Vicky, Thank you! I know how new appliances aren't what they were. If I buy a stove it ill be one that lasts another 50 years. I have a few in mind.
Anything connected to the wifi is out for sure! I hate renovations and have to face getting the bathroom done... but that is next!
Thank you for the info! With much love Annabel.xxx

    2. Not that there's anything wrong with wanting a new stove, especially if the old one is getting dicey, but I vote for fixing the old one, even if it costs as much as a new stove. The new ones are so much less reliable, and fixing the old one is probably a matter of replacing a few parts and, at worst, having the wiring replaced. Incidentally, those old electric stoves are worth plenty on the used market, and yours appears to be immaculate.

I haven't done much on the food front except for using more prepared foods. I am cooking at home, though. Last week I found ground beef (mince) for under $4 lb and I bought 3.5 lbs (which is nothing compared to what I would buy when my husband was alive and my daughter lived at home). I pattied it out into 1/4 lb patties, froze on a cookie sheet and transferred to a plastic bag for the freezer. Now I can easily make myself a hamburger or use more than one for a recipe requiring more meat. They also thaw quickly, which is a nice bonus.

I have shrunk another 1/2 inch due to osteoporosis that is now in remission. I used to be 5 foot 4 and now I am 5 feet even. I even have to take up pants that are Petite sizing! After paying for alterations for a few difficult things, I'm back to hemming my own. Big $aving.

My boyfriend (actually an old one and we have reconnected) is coming for the 4th of July and I've started cleaning my house already. Made good progress yesterday but my back hurts a lot today.

I, too, am amazed by how much you accomplish each week, same for the rest of the Bluebirds. Laura, especially, seems unstoppable. I really admire productivity! Best wishes to all of you!

    4. I have gotten interested in baseball again (my husband did not enjoy watching sports and he controlled the remote LOL). I am following the Seattle Mariners and so far I have seen about 60 of their games (yes, 60!). I really debated buying a TV sports package for $99 to watch but I did and it was well worth the money. There are 162 games in a baseball season. That's only 61 cents per game! I would rather be in the grandstands but I see a LOT more at home in full color on a large screen TV. Sometimes I make a hotdog and popcorn and pretend I'm at the ballpark! And, of course--baseball being notoriously superstitious--I wear my lucky earrings for every game. Go, Mariners!

    5. Dear Maxine, I think that is very good value for watching all those games. That’s very cheap entertainment. I actually enjoy watching sport too (never used to!) but I can crochet at the same time, so it’s a win. Well done on making your life happy again as much as possible. Love, Bridget

    6. Maxine, A lot of people do get shorter as they age. 4 inches is a lot though! It would affect how your clothes fit for sure! I am very glad you have interests and your life is full! I am so glad for you! With love Annabel.xxx

  4. Dear Annabel,
Well done on the parsley and butter. Whew! You got so much. Amazing how you were guided to work on that freezer and now you have room for your butter. You made such good use of your broth and squash. It is so lovely of you to make up baby food for Chloe to use for Ike. Of course, we got to give a shout out to your helpers. :)
The bird does look like something out of Looney Tunes.

I have been feathering my nest with free herbs. My 2nd daughter is house-sitting for her professor. He has mint and thyme growing in his front flower bed. Knowing that the more I harvest, the more his plant will flourish, I snip some stems every time I stop by to see her. I am slowly filling jars with dried thyme, making mint teas and syrup, and enjoying thyme on my roast chicken.

The kids had an orthodontist visit Wednesday. On the way home, we stopped at our favorite thrift store. Many items were 50% off. I found a lovely blouse, a pr. of jeans, a cork board to organize the side of the fridge, 4 magazines, and a pr. of Converse sneakers for my youngest son. I also found a dvd of a movie that my husband likes and a new tin of tea. He opened his Father's Day gift early so we could have our Thursday movie night and cups of tea.

I received some quick oats from my bartering friend. So I made energy balls that have been a real hit! A pair of worn beige jeans are now becoming a skirt. I have been happy with my other two skirts. I found a great tutorial online to sew jeans into skirts.
My new favorite You Tuber is Marion's World. She shows all kinds of ways to use up fabric scraps and learn new skills.

My garden is doing well. I'm anxious for our blackberries to fully ripen.
    Blessings to all the Bluebirds,

  5. Hello Annabel,

Your produce looks amazing! In particular your broccoli! My broccoli was small and leggy and bolted to flower, very disappointing after so much effort and time. I love your juicer, the colour is very you! Glad it’s made life easier ☺️ I wish we were neighbours I have loads of oranges ready to pick, we could trade!!! What a great trade and subsequent use of the cream. Butter is so expensive as is cream, your trade worked out very well. I used to see cream marked down a lot but not these days, I think people are getting wiser and have learned how to use it/freeze it so everyone grabs it now when they see it reduced in price.

I had my first cleaning client this week (my new job) a lovely lady I worked my backside off for an hour and a half actually worked 20 mins longer to get the while job done at no extra pay, and by the time I factored in drive time (1hr return trip) and fuel I was working for $19/hr! I hadn’t thought about all those things when I signed up, but I’m wiser now and will try and only get clients in my immediate area. You live and learn! But there was no stress like there was in nursing, the money was triple but it isn’t worth it to me anymore.

I made 7 jars of marmalade this week from homegrown mandarins. I tried to sell them to local friends on FB but to no avail. Never mind they will make great gifts.

    Take care everyone.

  7. Dear Annabel, after my surgery was postponed the day before scheduled this week I have had to "pivot" and refocus. I looked at my list that I had put aside until after recovery and will continue working through that this weekend. I woke up with a few specific ideas this morning including wrangling my recipes.
My mother in law visited yesterday and gave me the most perfect, beautiful and thoughtful gift. It is an old wheelbarrow that she planted a little garden in with a solar light and solar fountain and little figurines to put outside the window where she knew I was going to be recovering and if I was in hospital yesterday I would have come home to the surprise. It is so beautiful. I wondered why she was towing a horse float. She also bought a meal with her and we had a lovely visit.
Your post is beautiful too. I really love the photo of the parsley in the basket.

But it is amazing you have gone one and decided to do things now instead of waiting for recovery. I love a plan B! And your mother in law is very kind. For everyone reading... Clares MIL did the most amazing gift and I am going to feature it on next weeks post. It is inspirational! I hope they reschedule you soon and that in the meantime you get things done that make you feel really good to have out of the way! With much love Annabel.xxx

  8. Annabel, the wool squares make me so happy. I can’t wait to see them come together. The broccoli look huge! What a lovely and busy week you’ve had.

Our weeks as we head towards the end of the school term are so busy. We have two weeks to go, and at this point there is a bit of just hanging in there. I am already thinking of ways to make next term smoother, but for now I’m sticking to the basics. I am pleased to have continued making all meals at home, the cost of even the cheapest takeaways is so expensive now. Not to mention they’re not always that good, or filling.

I did a stocktake of food in the freezer today (that helps me feel organised!), and I think I’ve got to a point where I have enough meat that I can be very selective about price. That makes me happy, I want to be able to stock up when I find a good deal, but not feel forced to pay high prices because we’ve run out. So long as I continue to add when I get the opportunity I’m content with the level of food we have.

No crafting here which is a bit sad, but I can’t wait to get into some over the holiday break.

    Wishing everyone a lovely weekend

    1. Dear Jen, It is really good to reach that point... where you check out prices and only buy when there is a truly good deal. Then buy big!
I have found takeaways somehow aren't what they used to be. Shrinkflation has hit everything. Plus for a few people it soon adds up to a huge price. You have done a great job managing the meals and I can understand you would be tired and acting for the holidays! End of term I think the kids are tired too. I am hoping to have the girls the second eek of their holidays... I better check the calendar! With much love Annabel.xxx
