Feather your Nest Friday, 22nd May, 2026.

This week has gone very fast and so has the month of May.  Too fast.

The first thing I worked on was the last of the pears I was given.  I lost a couple because I was too slow, so that was it,  I cooked and pureed all of the rest for baby food.

The next thing to attend to were quinces.  They don't keep that well past a point they begin to get spots inside them, even in the fridge.

I used a new to me recipe where you have equal amounts of  (by weight) quinces and sugar,  cover with water and cook for four hours.   No cutting up,  just giving them a good wash first.

After four hours (on a gentle boil) they looked ruby like this...

Then this all was strained and with the joule of two lemons I boiled it again.  It turned into a beautiful jelly.

I cut a few quinces in half and baked them.  This tray went to Chloe.  They are really delicious.

So after all this I only have one or two quinces left, which I will cook for myself.

While at Mum's I picked some Bay Leaves and added them to my produce stand. 😊

My cook up was sausage rolls.  I froze a lot.

Also I cooked a lot of pork chops and stewed apples....   this dish was delicious.   The one pictured went to Chloe's.   Another dozen apples were used up.

We are coming into colder and wetter weather.  It is time to clean up all the boots.    I made up this recipe.

It is one part beeswax,  one part cocoa butter and three parts oil.   My oil was some macadamia, some castor and some avocado as these oil bottles all had a bit in them so I used those.   By happy accident the avocado oil made the mix green which I think looks nice!   This mix is just gently heated, stirred and poured into tins.

Once set it is like a balm.
I made up several sets of polishing cloths (flannelette) and tied them up.

When Tom came we sat out the front and I asked him to take one boot off.   His boots look like they have been around the block a few times.  😊
I showed him how (and explained why)  you have to condition leather.

Over time (from the thrift store) I've accumulated old shoe brushes.  I chose the smallest one for him and after the boot was conditioned we added a blob of vaseline to get a shinier finish.   He thought this was great.

We were fussy, getting into the stitching as this is where water leaks into your socks!

Then I asked him to take the other boot off and let's see how they compare.

Well, the difference was huge!  He was impressed.  So we got the next one sorted out.
Over the weekend I will do the same to all of my boots. They come up looking like new.

After this I said let's go light a fire.  Currently this was my biggest burn heap... you can see Tom standing there so you have a size guide.

I chose yesterday as there was no wind at all.

During the year I save boxes of paper and lint etc and I lit a fire at each end then we sat in the ute and watched it take off and the fires meet in the middle.

That was about mid afternoon yesterday.  Now, tonight,  more than 30 hours later it is still going.

In the thrift store I picked up some beautiful shirts for the boys, all brand new.

And two cotton sheets covered in ballerinas!

In the supermarket I got two free cookware items which went into my gift cupboard.

Ike is overjoyed since he realised he can drive.  He seriously looks a lot like my youngest brother.

Now I have caught up, to about level, with produce I have been able to slow down slightly.   I have plans....  apple strudel and and lemon butter will be next.

Rain is meant to be on the way.  We need a downpour.   So hoping for that!   The fire is going and I am nested in for the night!

Thank you for all of the blog and you tube suggestions.  Thanks to you all I have found some new ones to follow.   Now I will mention...  some I have on my home page as blogs I follow and have mentioned many times.   Different times you feel like different things.   For crochet and a happy small family, simple living I like Home Tea Knits.  She would be very helpful if you live in England as she gets so much free stuff and shows you how.   Frugal Queen in France is good especially for budgeting and also how to quilt and sew very inexpensively through recycling fabrics.  If you want to know what the heck is going on with the world Neil McCoy Ward is good and over the years he has been extremely accurate.   For a sweet family and little kids and babies Living the life you love is lovely. Farmhouse on Boone and Our Oily house... for big families and cooking.  For mass cooking and preserving Acre Homestead.  Especially when she cooks with her Mum! For baking -Mary Berry. For encouragement and money saving Frugal Money Saver.   That will do for this week!  I am watching every episode now of Farmers Wife Homestead and Urban QLD Homestead and learning sooo much from them!  They are just great.

Today I had some good finds...  but I need to wash things up and sort it all out tomorrow!

How did you build up your nest this week?  I hope opportunities came your way. I hope you found ways to bless others too. xxx

    1. Thanks so much Sharlene! I saw leather conditioner for a lounge for $90! Leather is wonderful for coming up so well and looking amazing. We just have to look after it! I am finding this is a good gift for anyone with horses (for saddles) or anyone who wears boots... which around here is pretty much everyone! xxx

  2. What a busy week Annabel, no wonder time is flying, you likely pass yourself in the kitchen coming back LOL

We did a thing this week that has been on my mind for a while. We have ordered a good quality battery powered lawn mower. This is my way of thinking ahead. It’s one less thing that will require fuel and the batteries will be charged by solar power. It should arrive next Thursday and I’m looking forward to seeing how it performs.

I acquired a free pallet and hubby screwed it to the wall in my shed and now all my star pickets and tomato stakes are upright and not sliding down onto the floor anymore. Of course this led to a bit of shed tidy too!

Have a great week everyone. Keep planning and preparing and looking for opportunities!

    1. The pallets idea is really good Cheryl! And I had no idea you could even get a solar powered mower. Brilliant. I know there are solar power power packs.... and different batteries can be charged for hand tools and stuff like that. This is good thinking! I am going to look into this! Thank you!xxx

    2. Just to clarify the mower runs on a big battery exactly like the power tools and the battery is charged on a charger which plugs into electricity. When I said that it charges on solar I meant our house has solar power so using little to no mains electricity to charge the battery. I wasn’t very clear in my comment so I hope that makes sense 😊 We are just trying to get away from relying on fuel wherever we can.

  3. Annabel, what a blessed and beautiful week you have had.
Tom is such a great little helper and Ike looks adorable in his vehicle. Chloe should be so proud of her children, I know you are as a Grandma.
Your produce that you have received and picked has turned into such beautiful items for your pantry.
My husband and I did a run to Walmart for a few essential that are more affordable there. My pantry is happy with all we added.
I spent the week working outside trimming bushes and when it became to hot out there i came in and did housework. The outside is starting to look decent. We purchased hanging pots for our front porch and while I was in PT husband purchased a plant for on the table out there. I like making the house look welcoming.
We hit a good sale on some produce and took advantage, cherries were $2.99, watermelon $3.99 and corn was 10/$2.00, all a blessing as most produce has gotten so expensive.

I have been busy trying to get my home in order, inside and out. I have the same feeling Annabel has and that little voice inside keeps saying to get things in order and do all we are able to, to keep our pantry stocked the best to our ability.

    1. Dear Rosanne, I am really jealous about the cherries. It would be $20 a pound here more or less. That was very cheap on the corn too! I hope you have more good finds this week! With much love Annabel.xxx

  4. It amazes me how many wonderful finds you get. I used to be able to find good deals here as well. Garage Sales were great for that. They have fallen by the wayside since FB Marketplace . People tend to just sell things one at a time now online.
The Thrift Stores used to have wonderful deals on clothes , good quality . Now people resell the good stuff online . I don’t really look anymore. One of my neighbors was moving out of state and I got some nice glass bake wear for cheap.
The leather conditioner is lovely. I just purchased a very small container off Amazon for $13 US dollars . I throughly enjoy the weekly updates . Thank you for all the time you put into your blog.

    1. Dear Lynd, Thank yo so much! In a lot of areas the thrift stores are no good anymore. But in the country towns there are still some thankfully. I cant get to too many garage sales because of distance but I should check if there are any on a Sunday as I got to town then. Mostly they are on Saturdays! I love glass bakeware. It has been a challenge lately to get more lasagne type dishes. (Always run out.) Thank you for your kind words! With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Dear Annabel, I have read your words with a smile on my face. You are a very pleasant part of my week. I am grateful for your posts, not to mention the knowledge I got from here and meeting/reading the other sweet Bluebirds.

Due to a new-ish toxic boss and not very good days at my office ( I have been working here since 2004 and he is the third generation of the same family running the business, but he is extra very mean to all the people) + all the bad news around the world I decided to concentrate on the nice and simple things, like family, kitties, the unconditional love of smiling dogs, hennies laying eggs, the ducks following me in the garden, handmade things, peace and God*s words.

In the garden the potatoes, beans, cellery, parsley, onions, garlic, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, sunflower and nasturtiums are doing really well. I plan to plant some more tomatoes. I gave away some peppermint plants and I will receive cherry tomatoes for them. Everywhere we have flowers now.

I started a needlepoint with the birth of Jesus in the barn, which I sew only outside in good light being very finely - it will be done untill Christmas, I promise. I knit in the evenings another cardigan for sale and I started some quilting blocks, using up my husband*s old shirts, because I want to mend some good beddings that need some attention.
Annabel, I have sent you on Instagram a short reel about the most simple way to make a quilt block I use. I did not know how to post it here but it is from the net. If you know how to put it up.....

These times I use up everything I have. I mend many clothing, like jumpers and skirts, I add to the gift cupboard small pieces of dolls clothes or small gift textile bags.

Thank you for everything. Sending all the best from far away, Laura_s_world from Romania

    2. Dear Laura, Sorry I am behind from last week. Tonight I will check this out on instagram thank you so much. I am very sorry about your new boss. That is really terrible especially when times are already hard, he is making a mistake to treat people this way.
I very much like the sound of your new stitching! I am glad you have nice evenings of knitting and quilting and good things. I think good fabric/yarn/cottons are all valuable things to save. In great times no one takes any notice but now these things are very hight prices. With much love Annabel.xxx

  6. I haven't built up my nest, but I am renovating part of it - my bathroom. I've never had any major work done on this house I've lived in for 27 years. I'm having a tub-to-shower conversion done. Me and my wallet are astounded at how expensive building materials are, although I did get an extremely good deal on tile. I am not a Do-It-Yourselfer, I'm a Pay-Someone-Elser. This project is very stressful so far and they haven't even started lol. What I really want is to show a picture and tell them just make it happen!

  7. Ike looks so happy in his vehicle! The difference in the boots is amazing, Tom will be wanting to polish everyone’s boots. Great find with the brand new shirts.

I baked ginger cupcakes, a chocolate slice and self-crusting quiche for a staff morning tea this week. Leftovers were used in lunchboxes.

I bought glass containers with bamboo lids for storage of leftovers, and this has made them easier to find so they get used quickly. The fridge has been a bit of a mess lately, this week I used up 8 jars or bottles with tiny bits of leftover mayo/sauce etc in them. It’s so much easier to sort out when there is less in it!

We’ve had clear days all week, so all washing has been hung outside.

    Have a lovely weekend everyone

  9. Hi Annabel
Yes, it is my husband who weaves the willow structures, such a saving for us.
Tom's boot came up really well, such a good thing to teach children to do. It brought back memories of my father meticulously 'feeding' his leather shoes etc.
Love the ballerina sheets! You had some great finds this week.
I made several jars of redcurrant jelly this week. I love that redcurrants reach setting point so quickly. I made a low sugar malt loaf and rhubarb fool too.
I mended a pyjama jacket and trousers for my husband.
I cut lots of flowers for the house and used some garden herbs in cooking.
I washed a big woollen blanket and hung it to dry in the sun.
We donated lots of plants we've propagated to a church fundraiser. I pricked out, potted up and planted out lots of seedlings. I cleared and rationalised one greenhouse, we have so many plants and pots in them. I cleared and replanted several big garden pots with annual flowers.
I found a good deal on a big pack of chicken breasts and batch cooked 'marry me chicken' and froze some.
It's been a busy week and I was so grateful for a choice of single serve frozen meals I've cooked previously, my husband and I could choose everyday and heat them through at the end of tiring days. Now I need to restock.
The upside of trying not to spend money on petrol is that I'm getting plenty done at home and enjoying it.
Best wishes for a good week to Bluebirds.

    1. Dear Penny, I wish you were nearby as I would commission your husband! Your redcurrant jelly would be gorgeous and so pretty. I bet your plants sold well at the church sale. That is fantastic.
Well done on the chicken cook up. All my life Ive heard of Marry me Chicken and have never made it. I am going to have to investigate how it's actually made.
Having the meals to grab in the evening is priceless. I am hoping to re build my supply too next week with some lasagnes cut into serving sizes.
I find it very true for myself the more Im home the more I am on to of things, get stuff one and its good.
As always you did a lot! With love Annabel.xxx

  10. It is Memorial Day weekend here in the U.S. What is missing this year are the terrific sales on hot dogs, burgers, ribs, mayo, catsup, mustard, barbecue sauce, soda, baked beans, corn on the cob, melons, and chips (crisps) and ice cream that we typically see. There are sales, but not Memorial Day prices from the past. More like normal cyclical sales prices, not the hurry and stock up it's Memorial Day as I might have done in the past. It makes me curious if the July 4th sales (in about six weeks) or Labor Day sales (about 8 weeks after the July holiday) will be any better. It used to be that I stocked for the year on the condiments and could freeze meats from the summer sales for the year ahead.
But on the other hand, I noted gas prices had dropped a little here so that was a good thing.
I had to run a lot of errands last week, so I combined several into each of two days. I have two more tasks to attend to next week, possibly three and then I am done with all that I personally can do with John's end of life business. I'm very grateful that so far all of the medical bills for him have come in and were low balance so I have been able to pay them off right away. I am sure there are more to come but hopefully they too will prove to be doable.
My son blessed me with offerings from his garden, two large zucchini. I've already made my way through one. He told me yesterday he also has lettuces, so I hope to get some tomorrow afternoon.
I continue to sort through John's things and often find something I needed or was thinking I might ought to buy.
I've been working in the yard, working in the house and running so many errands that I have been worn out each night and fall to sleep early. I am not complaining over that. I have had lifelong sleep issues so to any time I have a cycle of being able to sleep, I am so pleased!
I've cooked all my own meals and am slowly making my way through the larger supplies I'd put aside for two or a family meal. When I start to get low, I plan to replenish but put away in quantities for just one! I am finding that now I'm on my own, I am less inclined to want the leftovers of large cook-ups.

    1. I hope I'm posting this below Terri Cheney. Terri, I found exactly the same thing on Memorial Day "sales." I've always relied on Memorial Day for a year's worth of mayo, mustard, catsup, BQ sauce and pickles, but not this year. I ended up buying absolutely nothing! Not one store in my area had ground beef at sale prices. Can you imagine that? I'm hoping for better prices for the 4th of July, but in my experience the best prices have been for Memorial Day.

    2. While we dont have Memorial Day I understand holiday sales. After holidays/occasions some deals are usually there. Certain times to stock on on certain things. In recent times these have been thin on the ground here too. Thank you Maxine for sharing the same.Cooking for one is an adjustment but basically I still cook for two or more and keep one meal for later or freeze. I never have to cook every night yay! Lovely you had the zucchini to work on. Im glad you are eating and doing well! With much love Annabel.xxx

  11. Annabel you got so much done this week. I am sure Chloe is so grateful for the lovely purees for the babies and wonderful meals you cook for her. The quince jelly would be so lovely and the colour magnificent. I love your boot balm too and doesn't it make Tom's boots come up wonderfully and that and the polishing cloths would make wonderful gifts. Thank you for the boot balm recipe too.

We have been concentrating on decluttering, cleaning and organising in the sheds and have now finished deep cleaning the tank stand garden shed and the tool shed. We emptied everything out, swept it, pressure cleaned it, dusted and wiped over all the tools and garden equipment in there and put them all back. In the process we have filled up 4 wheelie bins with old cardboard, equipment that had stopped working and lots more. We sorted through everything and have quite a few hand tools, metal grinding discs, window glaziers rubber, curtain rod brackets, whipper snipper wire brushes and lots of other bits and pieces to take down to the trading post to sell. I still have to package all the items and hopefully send them down on Wednesday. We also pressure cleaned the back patio cement floor and cleaned everything out there and some paths around the side of the home.

Everything now looks clean tidy and organised again and we have at estimate 20% or more less in all the sheds. That is fairly much all we have had time to do as the tool shed alone took 4 days on the days we were home to complete, and a day to clean out the tank stand shed.

Hope everyone has had a wonderfully frugal week.

    Lorna.

  12. Annabel,
I love the ballerina sheets. And the cooking pots for your gift trunk will make great gifts.
I also think teaching Tom to condition his leather boots is a great skill and Ike is just adorable!
Homemade baby food is the best!
I'm still waiting to plant. I will do my best to have a good garden this year, but it's not starting off very good.
I've made a few dollars hemming pants for a friend of my husband and have done lots of cookie baking.
I added baking powder to an expired cake mix because often the leavening goes caput and it works perfectly. I also added pudding and sour cream to the batter that I needed to use up.
I used the last of the refrigerator pickles I canned last year, there was just a few slices left in the jar so I used them in my salad and the pickling liquid is just vinegar, water, salt, garlic and dill so I poured it on my salad instead of dressing and tossed in some extra dill. Delicious!
Your pork chops have reminded me that I haven't made stuffed pork chops for awhile so I'm putting them on the list. I will be able to use the dried bread cubes I have in the pantry for the stuffing part.
I just been doing this and that for now, how boring! Haha.
