Feather your Nest Friday, 3rd April, 2026. Happy Easter!

This week has been a continuation of last week!  Thankfully with a weekend in between.

So I will jump right in...

My basil was ready for another trim... this was the fourth harvest and better than the first tree.  I left some growing for other recipes.

I made up a huge batch of Pesto.  One container is for my younger daughter Lucy as she will he here tomorrow.   We are having an Easter Saturday brunch.   My goal (or one of them) is to send her home with a meal, eggs, pesto and whatever if left from our hot cross buns,  scones and jam and cream etc.

Somehow I ended up with a kitchen of preserving/freeze drying/jam making/candied figs and chocolate and they were all sticky...  and to this I added getting ready for tomorrow.  I can't count how many times I cleaned up the kitchen only to be back to square one!  I just worked on one thing and then another.   But also I had this feeling.  My original "feeling" goes all the way back to the end of 2016 and I decided to act on it in January 2017.  That is a decade ago!   This feeling was in my stomach and in my bones that I should build a pantry and we should become more self reliant but for a reason... because of something coming.  Ignoring it didn't work.

My whole blog pretty much covers what I did next. It led to us getting out of the city and building a whole new life.

In Jan 2020 that feeling was stronger (and we all know how that turned out) but I never once thought THIS is what I've been preparing for.  If anything there were a lot of lessons in it but we jus kept going.
Fast forward to now...  it has been the same conviction and we put so much effort into everything from water to a trustworthy community.   But on Monday and Tuesday I felt different.  I was going, going, going and the feeling was keep going,  don't look over my shoulder, don't look up just keep going.
I could see myself in my minds eye looking over my left shoulder and felt don't do that!  Don't look back! It made me think of Lot's wife!
So some of you will think wow that is a weird overshare.  But there will be others that understand.

So get on with it I did.

If you remember last week I was given the big box of produce.

I freeze dried celery first.  Half a celery = one jar.   One of these went to Mum's pantry.

Then cabbage was next.

While these were going I turned the big cauliflower and most of the broccoli into two large cauliflower cheese bakes.

Then I did red cabbage...

My friend gave me seedlings and I got these planted.   My broccoli and celery are growing well too.

I have almost ripe pears in the fridge to get to.   But also Chloe's fig tree was covered in ready to pick fruit.

This tree is huge!  Well there are no lengths we won't go to...  the boys made up a cage to be lifted by the low loader so they could pick the top of the tree.  Me,  I stayed on the ground and worked my way around what I could reach.

Maybe the theme of the week is sticky but buckets full of huge fat purple figs were harvested.  We can do this all again in a couple of weeks as there are still lots of green ones!

Then...

I got some in the slow cooker to make jam...

Another lot made fig paste.

I put blanched almonds into the jam.  This is beautiful.  My Dad and I used to compete to get the almonds.

Also I candied figs and dried them out to dip in chocolate.  They become chewy and delicious.

Tom helped me dip the candied figs in chocolate.  We had chocolate from here to next week.  I forgot photos of these but they will be on the table tomorrow so I will try and take one.

Last night there was a huge moon.  I think it was the Strawberry Moon?   It was amazing!

Chloe is also on the job and expanding a new veggie garden.  Today was a big day over there.  And a day of Autumn sunshine. The kids had a beautiful day too.

Ike is two months old.  He really has grown and I think he just wants to get into the action with the big kids.

So that was my week.  I am hoping tomorrow will be great fun for the kids,  delicious for the adults and lovely family time.  Mum and I will have all Grandkids/GreatGrandkids at once.  ðŸ˜Š

How did you build up your nest this week?   How are you managing fuel and food prices?    What are you doing differently?   Tomorrow we give the kids all warm winter pyjamas...  not a lot spent on chocolate but more on something that will last the whole winter.  Remember it is Autumn here in Australia!

I will do a few more things in the kitchen and then call it a night!xxx

It’s been a while since I commented here but we have also felt the push to increase our larder while also realistically streamline and share excess with friends/ family.
I found BL chicken breast in 4-1/2 to 5 pound packages (about 2 Kilos each) for $3.50 each on Flashfood so I bought the 12 packages they had on offer. 9 of those packages went to friends/family and I just pressure canned 21 pint jars of chicken chunks for us.

Then I found strawberries for 45 cents/pound and bought all 19 that were on offer. I put 2 pounds in fridge for eating fresh and dehydrated the rest.
Same thing happened with apples! I found a box on offer with Flashfood that had 5 three pound bags (15 pounds total) for a total of $3! (20 cents/pound) I used my “handmaiden” that peels, slices and cores the apples in one effort as I turn the hand crank. I also dehydrated those apple slices!
I found butter on sale at a local shop for $1.99/pound so I bought 12 more for us.
In the meantime, I realized that I had more grain (wheat) than we needed for the 2 of us so I gifted about 350 pounds to 4 of my younger friends so they could build up their food supply while we gained room to add more variety to our pantry.

And our little flock of chickens are giving us 7 - 8 eggs every single day! (Between 4 and 4-1/2 dozen)! This gives us a continuing supply of eggs plus enough to share with friends who don’t have this blessing.

Prices are rising here, to be sure, but I’m still finding lots of “opportunities” to stock up what we normally use at exceptionally good prices on a regular basis as well as to share with others!

    We have been truly blessed.

    1. Dear Pat, Flashfood is the best thing ever! Also like s surprise what you might get! You were kept busy as it all came in! I have watched with close interest all developments this week and the ceasefire doesn't sounds like its going too well. I keep doing all I can too but your bargains beat mine! But God is good and there are different ways and means and opportunities. Last night I was offered cream. Of course I said yes! So I will get butter... in a different way!
Your chickens have been amazing. Being able to bless others with eggs is so good. You got a lot added to your shelves and helped your family and others! With love Annabel.xxx

  3. Dear Annabel, what beautiful photos. Seeing the photos of your beautiful grandchildren smiling and in the outdoors makes me so happy. I love that you are having an Easter brunch tomorrow. How special. I think you have done an amazing job with the produce, it would be great to see those jars lined up. I have the same feeling. I never know if I am doing enough, but I must just keep going and keep trying. I think our bikes will be handy and also ensuring all left overs are used up. I am really trying to focus on the little things, like switching off lights, using up the one last piece of ham in the fridge, wearing out the shoes until they fall apart; making-do, I guess. Lots of love, Bridget Happy Easter.

    1. Dear Bridge, Thank you! Yes I think having bikes is a great thing. Having baskets or some kind of carrying system too... so you could go pick thing sup from the store etc would be good. All the little things add up. Bridge it truly works to pray before shopping and to look everywhere like marketplace and even to let people are work know you love fruit for making jam etc. There are still people who dont pick their own fruit! Pounce on any opportunity even ones you are afraid to ask... but ask and you shall receive!
It is lovely weather and we had some rain and a lot going on this week! But it's going so fast! With much love Annabel.xxx

  4. I have been tidying my garden as we have had some nice sunny days. My fruit trees are flowering, my onions and shallots have over-wintered well and my husband bought some seed potatoes a couple of days ago. I intend to get those planted this week, along with some tomato and leafy salad seeds. I have plenty of herbs in the garden and split a large clump of chives this week as they had become over-crowded.
We are lucky to be retired, so can choose carefully when to use the car for errands and are trying to combine them to reduce our car use even further. I feel so sorry for those who have to commute to work as fuel prices seem to be going higher and higher.

    1. Dear Tracy, Your garden is blossoming literally! Yes being able to think and plan how and when to use the car is a big help. I know people who now may not be able to continue jobs and apprenticeships... unless they can sleep over at work or nearby as the cost is too great. Big changes. I have cut out a trip this week and last and stayed home but my friend has picked up my order as she is in town anyway. We are all adapting in some way. This week is zooming by! 6. Anabelle, I share your urgency to be prepared, not only for my husband and me but for those in my life that do not see or feel it.
I was given lots of tomato plants to give away (I have enough started) and gave them to Amish neighbors and another English (Amish name for non Amish) friend. Michelle has a freeze drier and invited me to come see her set up. I've debated getting one as I will be 78 this summer, but have decided to look and and then make a decision. I'm definitely a prepper, a watcher and if we don't need the food, others I love will, or church family.
You are an incredible doer and your encouragement is so appreciated.
I wish you and yours a most blessed Easter. He has Risen, Hallelujah, Amen.

    1. Thank you so much! And thank you for telling me your feeling and what you are doing. Well I think that if you can afford it and you have produce to work with then you will have an awfully good time with a freeze drier. I also feel preparing for others is vital... I can do without but Im not having my Grandkids do without and there are older people are church already finding it tough... so if I can help them I will. You go for it. You are not old... talk to me in your 90s then I will say maybe slow down loL! xxx

  9. Dear Annabelle, thank you for sharing. What you described as a feeling is actually much more significant. That inner knowing, inner leading, is the discernment and wisdom and leading of the Holy Spirit. So many are experiencing the same quiet but clear urgency.

I am not a medical provider nor a licensed herbalist, In addition to food, I believe it is important to have a basic knowledge of simple herbs and basic herbal remedies that can be used for fevers, colds and flu, ward off a virus, cuts, scrapes, burns, etc. as well as strong first aid skills and a well thought out first aid chest.

In the last couple of years, We have seen massive flooding here in the US where communities were cut off due to bridges and roads being destroyed. They weren't getting out and help was slow getting to them for different reasons. The people had to help themselves. I read that in some remote mountain areas supplies were finally hauled in by mules.

We have seen prescriptions delayed at the pharmacy due to computer glitches, supply shortages etc., even the pharmacist being out sick with no backup pharmacist available.

If someone needed an antibiotic urgently for something like a UTI, tooth infection or ear infection, and had to wait 24 or 48 hours to get started on an antibiotic, that would be miserable and the infection would be getting worse. Better to have the right things on hand as emergency backup.

If there is illness from a virus, most doctors offices and clinics tell you that there is nothing to do but to ride it out let it run it's course, but there are many herbs that are strong anti-virals.

Collecting simple herbal books is essential in case the Internet or i-phone can't be used to look up information.

There is always new wisdom understanding to be gleaned if we set our mind to it. We need to study carefully and make notes, but if a person feels led of the Lord to grow herbs or buy them, and learn more, as well as refreshing or learning more about first aid, it is another strong layer of protection against the uncertainties of living in the end times. Obviously precautions must be considered regarding interactions with prescription meds and herbs taken together, but many herbs are generally regarded as safe. First aid books are great resources to have as well in case the Internet is out.

A good herbal mentor is Amber at Grace Walk Farm.com, she is a Christian herbalist and has lots of free YouTube videos.

Also Carolyn Thomas from "homesteading family.com".

Your figs look beautiful and will make such nice gifts that people can add to their pantries.

Have a very blessed Easter celebration with all of your family.

You are such a blessing to so many households.

    1. Thank you so much! I could not agree with you more. I would like to use one of the online medical groups to get scripts that you have but we cannot. (Like Jase medical.) I use homeopathy and essential oils mostly as my alternatives and preventatives. Some vitamins. But I love to keep learning!
Thank you or your encouragement. I do believe it is the Holy Spirt as discernment is a gift of the Holy Spirit and many times I cant figure out why someone seems to be unable to see... but this is why, they do not have the Holy Spirit. So I pray for that person.
I do have a fairly good medical library but probably could improve it. Thank you so much for great suggestions!xxx

  10. Happy Easter Annabel! Your brunch sounds like it will be so lovely. And exciting for both kids and adults to go home with treats. I’m sure Lucy will be so grateful to get home and have dinner already sorted.

I love the photos of your grandchildren, they all look so happy. Your cauliflower cheese is fabulous! Prior to last year I only ever cooked cauliflower cheese, turns out cauliflower is also great in soup. But covered in cheese will always be my favourite lol.

We have finished school!! So exciting. Yesterday I made two batches on hot cross buns. I think I’ll just keep making them all weekend. The smell is so good.

This week I went to the same supermarket as last week while waiting for an appointment, and walked out with 10 dozen eggs. They were under half price, the cheapest I’ve seen since moving. My plan is to make up quiches, slice them and freeze the slices. Our next term is busy with sports practices and games, so the more prepared I can be with decent snacks the better.

I’m also going to make up cookie dough, bake muffins and cakes etc, all to fill up the freezer and use up eggs!

I have done a stocktake of the freezer and want to use some things up to make space. Soup is another thing I like to have in the freezer, so I’ll start with pumpkin soup today.

I’ve continued to try some new simple recipes to expand our dinner options and it’s been really good to
find meals we like that use cheaper cuts of chicken. Chicken is still one of the cheapest options, but chicken breast is continuing to go up. I bought lots of chicken bone-in thighs for $4.99/kg last week and we’ve enjoyed the recipes I’ve tried with these.

Im planning lots of walks this week, we can walk to the library, the beach, a playground etc. So long as we have snacks packed the younger children will keep walking! If I can go for five car-free days over the holidays I’ll be very happy with that.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe Easter,

    Jen (NZ)

    1. Dear Jen, It was fantastic you could get the eggs. You will soon go through them. Eggs in one form or another for breakfast are really healthy especially while there is more time in the mornings on holidays.
Chicken is funny... I sometimes can buy a whole chicken cheaper than a couple of fillets. So watch of specials on whole chickens as they you get the meat and can make a really good stock. Overall it would be our cheapest meat too.
Enjoy a great holiday! Our kids break up today and I have Sidney coming next week! With much love Annabel.xxx

  11. Lovely post, Annabel, and what cute pictures of your grandchildren!

My prepping this week was mostly updating our bug out bags, which I sincerely hope never to need. I used my Amazon points to buy a crank-up AM/FM radio with weather band that also has a light and will charge my cell phone. I also bought a pack of disposable masks that I'm dividing between my bug out bag, car and leaving some in the house.

I haven't been buying much food since it's just me now, but I've arranged for help to move my pantry shelves and cabinets in the garage. Then I will begin rebuilding my food stash. I am buying some Easter specials this week, though. And I've decided to plant a few things this spring, even though I'd planned not to because of my age and arthritis.

Huge disappointment--because I haven't canned peaches in a few years (and probably never will again), I've been buying those expensive peaches in jars from Costco. I've faithfully saved the jars to reuse. Today I discovered that the rims are ever-so-slightly larger than standard jar rings. Beware! Don't buy the peaches for the jars. They look the same, but they're not. I can't reuse the lids because they are on so tight that I usually have to poke a hole to get the lid off.

That's all for now. Best wishes and Happy Easter to all of the Bluebirds. I'm going to Easter dinner at the Certified Family Home where my daughter lives. Bringing the deviled eggs!

  12. Hi Annabel,
As soon as you mentioned looking over your shoulder I thought of Lot and his wife too. As far as I’m concerned you could never give us too much information. I take it all to heart. I can’t do everything you do in my dry windy Colorado climate, but I do what I can, and I pay attention. If anything it’s made me more peaceful. One thing that’s changed in the last few months is the direction I’m looking. Interesting you brought that up. I’m looking to God more now. I thought I was before, but now He’s getting more of my attention. God sat me down one day and said “ What is more Important to you?” It was an eye opener at the time. I’ve been pretty independent from the time I was born. Now I’m letting God steer. At least more often! Have a wonderful Easter with your family. Mel in Colorado.

  13. Hi Annabel
Your feeling that something is coming is probably right! We have been hit by so many unforeseen events over the last few years and nothing would surprise me now. It gave me pleasure to hear that Chloe is putting in a new vegetable garden, growing our own food and handling things for ourselves is so important.
Hope your Easter brunch goes well, how lovely to have all the family together.
We have bought two more rhubarb crowns to help with food resilience. We were given some rhubarb by a friend too. We used purple sprouting broccoli and parsnips from the garden.
I bought four pots of lily of the valley from a church sale for 50 pence each. My husband pruned a dogwood bush and planted the whips as a small hedge. I sowed seeds for more cut flowers and we sowed carrots, beetroot and parsnips in the garden.
My husband is going to do a few more hours gardening for a client each week. Some people pay him in cash so we keep a sensible amount in the house. If systems go down we will need cash.
I continue the decluttering challenge and took a carload to the tip this week, some copper pipe to a metal merchants for a few pounds and donated books and jigsaws too.
I used vouchers for free teabags and chocolate mini eggs.
Our stock up was various things like electrical insulating tape and bits for the garden and greenhouses, the little things you always seem to need.
Our son in law went fishing and gave us two big fillets for the freezer. Fish is becoming as expensive as meat.
We are giving our granddaughter books and clothes for Easter.
Happy Easter to all who celebrate it and best wishes to you Annabel and all Bluebirds.

  15. Hello Annabel (and everyone),

Those happy smiling kids are wonderful to see! You have been going full out this week and accomplished a lot. The fig jam looks delicious, and the freeze-dried veggies always look so vibrant, it is amazing. I too feel this sense of urgency - you are not alone.

This week I've been planting up tiers of the Greenstalks as I have time in the evenings - the pepper seedlings in my tiny greenhouse should be ready to be added this weekend. A couple of quick cook ups made for easy after-work meals (pasta/bolognese and beef with roast potatoes and veggies). The thrift store yielded some nice yarn and embroidery floss! Tonight, I put together prayer shawls to take to church. Tomorrow I'll head to the farm store to pick up some veggie plants from their sale (the local greenhouse offers $1.49 seedlings once a spring, and they grow very well) and try to do an early morning grocery shop.

I didn't share this earlier, but I was diagnosed with a small aneurysm (not bleeding) on imaging earlier this winter. A kind priest performed an anointing of the sick, which brought a lot of comfort & peace. Today, I had an MRI to look at it further and see what was to be done. Well...today, the imaging report states there is *no* sign of the aneurysm and indeed *no* difference at all from my MRI several years ago (I get migraines with visual & sensory aura). This is at the regional academic medical center, so they know how to read an MRI! Truly an answered prayer, and I am so thankful. God is good.

Happy Easter to all! You and your families are all in my prayers. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and holiday.

  19. Kathy that is wonderful about the aneurysm.

Annabelle, I don't have the sense of urgency that you do but I am steadily aware of the need to not let my supplies run down, to combine trips while I can, etc.

I have had company most of this past week. We had a little family ceremony to sprinkle some of John's ashes. After company left, I started getting my finances in shape by doing what I must do to make appointments, etc to deal with the death and such. Fortunately I have done quite a lot in just two days and am feeling quite good about what's been done. I made a new list this evening of things to look into next week.

I've gone through a few things and discovered I am out of laundry detergent. I have a bit on hand I can use but I shall be looking into getting more and stocking up. I cannot use the homemade liquid as I have water that tests very soft and all the recipes use water softening agents in them, both for the powder and liquid type so it doesn't rinse out of my clothes as it might someone else's. It's important to be aware of what type of water you have and what you're using, as it can lead to plumbing and septic issues! I learned that one the hard way.

Thank you to whomever mentioned freezing quiche. I made one today and have three large pieces left of my small quiche and was debating if I really wanted to eat it three more times and if I'd be tired of it if I did. Freezing two pieces will work fine for me.

  20. Happy Easter Annabel and Bluebirds across the world.
The seasons are moving fast now and your encouragement and example inspired me to get out in the rain this afternoon and plant garlic which I had been given by a local grower. I soaked it for 24 hours in weak seaweed solution to prime it.
I have nearly finished the 15kg box of bananas I bought a couple of weeks ago for $10. They were perfect specimens but too small for the supermarkets.
My fig cuttings are mostly holding on. The biggest piece has nice new shoots on it.
Your big family gathering was the best way to celebrate Easter and the cousins would always enjoy catching up with each other. Special times and a reminder of what really matters in our lives.

  22. Beautiful encouragement from Annabel and the Bluebirds . Annabel your grandchildren are so precious your cup is overflowing.

So encouraging to see people taking action. Little promptings are best listened to. I remember hearing “ Two is one and one is none. “ That certainly seems to be the case with the supply chains. Better to have extra on hand you might not be able to restock at a later date.

My daughter read how you can clone roses. She took cuttings off one of my prettiest rose bush. Dipped the end in Turmeric and put it in a sand pot . It is growing !! 3 new roses. While we can’t eat it , it is important to have beautiful things to look at, not just edible.

I have started buying Christmas gifts now. Prices are still climbing and fuel surcharges are going to be added this month to many supplier and shippers.

Stay healthy, happy and creative Bluebirds the next generation needs our encouragement ❤️

    1. Dear Lynd, Thank you! Yes! I say two is one and one is none as well. I read that somewhere and it stuck with me. Fabulous about the roses... I am wondering it turmeric will work on other things as a root powder so will try it. I totally agree that surrounding ourselves in beauty and comfort keeps life much happier. Very good idea on the gifts... I was focused on Easter but now I will think further ahead. I think everyone is needing encouragement. Thank you for your kind words! With love Annabel.xxx

  23. Dear Annabel & Bluebirds,
Hope you all had a blessed Easter! It is so good to come to this space and be encouraged to serve my family.
With only teens in the house, we did something different this year. Instead of dyeing eggs on Good Friday, we made Resurrection gardens. Tidbits and co. has good instructions on how to make these.
I gifted all our children Easter treats instead of an egg hunt. Though my youngest 3 got to hide eggs for their cousins' children while at Grandma's.
Annabel, I love how you dove right in to preserve your vegetables. I appreciate your example. Your fig jam looks delicious! And thanks for sharing photos of the grands. They are all so sweet!

I have been working hard to show myself grace and enjoy this busy time of life. I don't get as much accomplished as I did when the children were younger. But now I am in a supportive role and I'm not home enough to bake and sew.
    Love to you all,
    Leslie

    1. Dear Leslie, Thank you! I have seen the idea of resurrection gardens and think they are beautiful! You are doing well it is a lot to be outside the home working and do everything at home too. We can do all things but not necessarily all at once! This week has flown by! With much love Annabel.xxx
