It has been a good week and I've been busy as a bee keeping up with produce. 🐝
I had a few days where I wasn't well. I fell in a hole. Not literally, just too tired and achy and all the things. This set me back a bit but there was nothing I could do about it.
Now, from past things that have happened I found great comfort in the verses about time. Basically God can redeem time you lost. Maybe you lost years to depression or bad choices or goodness knows what. Scripture says that this can be redeemed and in my life I have found this to be true over and over.
In this case I was sure my sick days meant I would not get much done this week. But now it is Friday evening and really there is no real sign I was sick at all! Somehow the time was certainly redeemed.
My first mission was to use the last of the pears. I sent a friend a tray of Figs... and she sent me back the most beautiful huge Quinces. Nothing smells as heavenly as Quinces! So the first thing I made was Quince and Pear jam, half and half.
It turned out so well. I made it in the slow cooker. It is pink and smells amazing. And it tastes beautiful. I got eight decent sized jars from this first round.
Next I baked two trays of Quinces in the oven. They are just cut in half, cored, some water and sugar and baked until pink. Absolutely beautiful. I took one tray over to Chloe. I lived on Quinces... first with custard them with yoghurt.
At the swap table I got heaps of big cherry tomatoes. Today I took jars and boxes of onions to both swap carts.
With my tomatoes I made a tray bake for Chloe's family and then I froze two bags for similar bakes later on.
My friend gave me three Capsicums .... I chopped two and froze those and kept one for eating during the week.
She also gave me two large Eggplant and these beautiful rose plates! I just love them!
The jam and baked Quinces are so gorgeous that I hunted around the kitchen and fridge and have just enough pears to make another batch of the exact same jam... which I hope to do tomorrow. Then that is every pear used for the season.
With all this produce and jam making the chooks have been loving all the cores and seeds etc. They are thriving on every bit!
Today I made a little box of a dozen eggs, a few passionfruit, a few onions, a mini bunch of parsley and a jar of the jam for an old lady at church. Well, she loved it. Gifts don't have to cost anything really. I was very touched this week when I listened to an old Jordan Peterson interview. He was talking about encouragement and so many people get none and never even a kind word. He knew it so well that he began to cry talking about it. And he said even one sentence of encouragement can mean the world to someone. He is terribly ill now and I think so much of him. Also if you have never seen it his wife Tammy was dying of an incurable cancer and she was totally healed. You can watch this on You Tube as it is amazing. Now I pray he can be healed too.
Anyway small gifts of help and small gestures of care... there are ways and means!
My container garden had turned into a massive mess but I was getting things planted. These seedlings went in this week plus seeds.
Still, I had issues I was stuck with such as some containers that never do well and needed to be moved to new spots. Some that needed to be topped up with compost... a general out of control hell scape. haha
Yesterday my helpers were here for the day. I explained what needed to be moved and they made it look easy despite these being huge containers. Now they will get the rain... and I have concluded no amount of watering anything does what rain does. I filled one of the empty beds with Parsley seed as I have a ton of that.
I have Basil to harvest and broccoli which is getting quite huge.
This help was a great boost.
I am now working on a blanket for Chase. It was already started and I didn't have enough wool in the colours I wanted which are dusty blues and greys. My friend turned up with her op shop finds of huge balls of pure wool. Take a look at the perfect match! I am set!
This will be a single bed blanket. Big enough, I hope, to be kept always.
Tom came and his little brother had requested Honey Crackles. So we got going. I heated the butter, honey, sugar mix and Tom said "Nana I can handle it from here." Which he did as we have done this a few times. While he worked on them I did other jobs in the kitchen.
We left them cool and I covered them with a cloth to transport them home with him. He insisted he took them inside and left them covered so he could surprise everyone after dinner. I was asked to zip it and not give the game away!
Yesterday was the feast day of Saint George. Tom gave three adults a complete lesson on Saint George and I was amazed as I didn't know half of it! So I learned a lot and he was proud we all were like "really!? wow!"
On the way here Tom noticed a big branch down. He told my helper about this and off the went. You can see his blue shirt... he is in there having a great time picking this huge branch up.
In the mail I got the most amazing gift. Thank you so much! My favourite verses... complete with Bluebirds too.
It is exquisite. I love it so much that I am going to get it professionally framed but first I need to find a frame I think is right for it. I am going to have it in my kitchen where most of the work is happening.
This was such an uplifting and toughing gift. How perfect!
Now a little story. My friend knows there is no fence too high, no one I won't ask if I see fruit being wasted. So when this tree was spotted (while they were out on a drive) she thought mmm.... ok I am going to do it! They drove up the driveway to the house and asked the lady would she mind if they picked some Quinces? The lady was very nice and said yes! and that she had no idea what to do with them and so they just fell.
I am pretty sure if I had seen this tree I would have practically crashed the car looking!
This is the bagful she came home with. They are enormous and perfect. I said five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ this is what to do! Many years I have had over 100 kilos of produce from doing this! Many times I end up friends with the people and take them back jam or a pie. Take opportunities!
So on food an opportunities.... I am blessed with reports from so many of you. This week fuel prices came down here somewhat which was great. However rationing has not been ruled out.
I listened to a speech from the head of the EU. It was fascinating. She said fuel of all kinds will probably need rationing and also food. She said everyone would need to eat less. I will refrain from giving my opinion on these unelected people with power over so many. Then she said this would include phones.
Phones.
What? How? Why?
During covid in our neighbour state Victoria people were told by the government not to talk to their neighbours, even over the fence. And to dob in people seen talking to their neighbours what's more. This does not sound like it could possibly be true but it is. Loneliness and isolation are two of the worst things for mental health and happiness. Yet this happened.
The next day after hearing this about phones my English friend messaged me. She had already been warned to expect fuel rationing and already told to expect food rationing. Heating oil had already become unaffordable. But now they were being warned that they could have PHONE rationing.
Even me... who feels like nothing would shock me anymore... well, I was shocked. I asked her where she had seen this and what was the reason given?
It had been on Great Britain news and the reason given is that the phone business uses a lot of electricity. So there you go.
I share this because the whole world is affected. I heard Cambodia and the Philippines have terrible fuel problems. Many countries are. I am sure many reading are feeling the pinch with food rices, fuel prices and even travel restrictions. We just can't be well prepared if we have no clue. I really appreciate you letting us know what you know. In Australia the general trend is that whatever is happening in the USA or UK soon happens here. We can basically count on it. Mind you in covid we excelled and maybe were the worst with some particular restrictions.
It was a great week and I have plans for tomorrow as I am just dying to get the next lot of jam going. Good thing I have so many jars. We also have the opportunity, in about another week, to pick a third round of figs. I cannot use this many figs although I could make jam.... but I can share and trade with them. I can contribute to the swap tables. So I m pretty sure we will have another harvest.
Have a rest, appreciate all the good things of the week and make new plans. There is nothing like a plan that comes together!xxx
No visiting, even on phones, sounds like planned isolation for control purposes. Always remember 2020.
ReplyDeleteYou had a very productive week, Annabel. The jam looks wonderful.
It always brightens the day to see Tom. His smile is so sweet.
I am so glad you got some rest this week.
Much love,
Glenda
Dear Glenda, Absolutely, isolating is a manipulators tool. When that happened here last so many died alone and mental health and depression problems went through the roof.
DeleteI have been making more jam since this first lot was so nice! Have a beautiful new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel and sweet Bluebirds,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, TOM !!!! I adore that boy/gentleman!
I like the rose plates, especially the colours. I have never made quinces in the trays, only jam and jelly, but I can imagine how good that can be. Chase*s blanket looks great, and it will be treasured for life, for sure!
I took a break from the outside world. I still went to the office and worked, enjoyed the beauty of a nature in Spring and the Easter Holidays in a calm loving way with my little family, but somehow I managed to block the news and media and negative persons and all the bad in the world. Not head in the sand, on the contrary, eyes wide open, but I needed a rest. I think the poem here shows more eloquently my mood.
How I Go Into The Woods
by Mary Oliver
Ordinarily I go to the woods alone,
with not a single friend,
for they are all smilers and talkers
and therefore unsuitable.
I don’t really want to be witnessed talking to the catbirds
or hugging the old black oak tree.
I have my ways of praying,
as you no doubt have yours.
Besides, when I am alone
I can become invisible.
I can sit on the top of a dune
as motionless as an uprise of weeds,
until the foxes run by unconcerned.
I can hear the almost unhearable sound of the roses singing.
If you have ever gone to the woods with me,
I must love you very much.
I have read all your posts and comments and missed you all, there were times when something happened and I was thinking *Ohh, I have to write about this to the Bluebird Girls.* You are a part of my encouragement.
I try and encourage others, too, just the ones that want to. My cousin is moving slowly to a suburban area with land and I help her establish a small garden with flowers, vegetables, herbs and a small orchard. I gave her strawberry plants, blackcurrant bushes, sour cherries trees, hydrangea and rose cuttings, seeds like beans, lettuce, sunflowers, basil, tomatoes and squash. She even prepares for potatoes soon. She gave me all her kitchen scraps for my chickens and cat food for my kitties.
Weather wise we are still in the last frosts at nights. My chickens are all well, they are friends now - the new six ones were bought from a hatchery, they knew only crumble feed I guess, and it was a pleasure observing them discovering fruits, grass, vegetables , scraps - that moment when they peck, pause, and then realise they’ve found something new and interesting.
The report from my part of the world - in addition to all the other crisis - fuel, economy, wars - our country has entered in a political crisis on 20th of April, our government considered maybe to get things even harder for us. And yesterday and today EU leaders are meeting in Nicosia to discus about energy, fuel, prices, money and war.
Mot good times.
See you all next time. Sending many good wishes from far away, Laura_s_world from Romania
Dear Laura,
DeleteNature and the garden make all the difference to keeping our heads on straight. Your cousin moving to have some land is going to be such an advantage to her! Your help will encourage her so much!
I LOVE it when new chickens discover the delights of natural food! It reminds me of when a child tries chocolate or bacon for the first time. haha
I have been watching what Eu leaders are coming up with. I did not know about your gov crisis so I will read up on that. Keep going on all the good things and all your growing and your extra chickens are good news to me!
With much love, Annabel.xxx
hello annabel, all your vegetables and fruit look so good. we are just now getting into spring and it is so dry. i hope it's not an indication of what the summer will be like, and so many tornados too. even the earth is groaning for the Lords return. i have a question about your jams, how do you seal them for long term storage? do you process them in waterbath or just leave the cellophane on them? also, when you plant onions, do you top them off after they are so tall, and if so, when do you do this? am loving your quinces, they are hard to find around here. i would like to make some quince honey- a type of jam. been busy in the garden this morning planting tomato and collard starts and some red beets. hopefully we will get some rain this weekend. take care now and don't work to hard. ha i should take some of my own advice. love, bonnie in southern pa.
ReplyDeleteDear Bonnie, I hope you get some rain. We are desperate needing some here now as well.
DeleteGenerally in Australia jams are made and go into sterilised jars and a lid of cellophane top. This keeps on the shelf usually for a couple of years. I think some in humid climates may waterbath but I had never heard of it until I heard in US jam is processed. I had never heard of this. So this is our normal and the only difference is now I have plenty of fridge room I generally keep them in the fridge.
I have never heard of cutting the tops off onions so that is a no ...
I would find it terrifying to live with tornados... but then I live with fires! It seems wherever we live we have something! Well I am pacing myself this week and preserving something everyday rather than several things a day! Today was Pesto. It turned out so well! Have a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
When you seal your jam jars, is it a special type of cellophane just for this purpose? I'm in the US and I don't process my jam, which I make with low sugar pectin. I wash the jars and keep them in simmering water while I make the jam. Then I pour the boiling jam into the hot jars and seal, sometimes with 2 piece lids but more often with saved one piece pop-up lids saved from other jars. I have never had a lid not seal this way and you can use the lids over and over. You can also reuse two piece lids as long as they are not damaged. Again...never had a problem.
DeleteThat sampler is beautiful and perfect for you. If I ever knew of anyone who fits the description of the Proverbs 31 woman, it is you!
ReplyDeleteThat is the kindest compliment you could ever give me! Thank you!xxx
DeleteHi Annabel and everyone
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you were worn out for a few days but you still achieved a lot! All the fresh produce is so good and the jam looks wonderful. We planted a quince tree a few years ago and it has looked sickly but this spring is covered in beautiful blossom and if the fruit sets we might have a crop to use. Feeling hopeful !
I am inspired by the ways you cooked and used your quince.
My doctor thinks I might have broken some bones in my foot, I will have an x-ray but I have been slow and hobbling this week. Managed to get some things done:-
Used a sponge that didn't rise well as the base for a trifle, stewed rhubarb from the garden and frozen blackberries as the fruit layer.
Used parsnips and purple sprouting broccoli from the garden
Cut iris, catmint and sweet rocket to fill a vase for the house
A friend gave us spare seedlings of red cabbage, Brussel sprouts and Savoy cabbage. We often give her plants we've propagated. As my mother used to say 'Fair exchange is no robbery'.
A friend gave us a swing for the garden for our granddaughter. His son is too big for it.
Our son in law trained as an electrician and replaced some lights for us. We paid for the lights but his labour was free because we give them free childcare every week( which we love!)
I decluttered and cleaned up an area in the garden and took rubbish to the tip.
I found a brand new t-shirt and cross body handbag for me at the charity shop. Also a hanging organiser which I've hung in the hallway and filled with gloves and woolly hats.
I have concentrated on buying 'yellow sticker' reduced price meat for the freezer and stocked up on toothpaste.
We are working to maintain our home and garden as a beautiful haven as a buffer against the craziness.
Good luck to you Annabel and all Bluebirds.
Penny in the UK
I'm so glad you were able to rest and recouperate! My husband always reminds me what a white tornado I am when I've rested.😊
DeleteThank you for sharing about your pear quince jam. I was given 2 boxes of unripe anjou pears on Thursday. And on Friday, I read your post. So perfect! My pears are stewing in the crockpot now.
So fun to read about "the cooking farmer." 😄 Tom is so thoughtful. All your grands are so joyful!
Thank you for sharing your "boots on the ground " views. My husband and I both work at lowering our cost of living through asking for better prices. Living on one income with a large family gives us tax breaks. And we seem to live in a freer state. My family in California have to deal with more restrictions. But my prayers are with those of you who are dealing with high prices coupled with unfair laws.
Love, Leslie (OH)
Dear Penny, Oh no, how did you hurt your foot? I hope it is not broken! This will be so painful... keep it up as much as you possibly can!
DeleteI hope you get a crop of Quinces! I still have some left and oh they are so good! My fridge smells of Quinces and so does my car! It's better than any perfume.
Using the sponge in a trifle was a great idea. I love trifle! I think everyone does. Very helpful having an electrician in the family and money saving.
The swing in your backyard will be fantastic! How perfect. You achieved heaps... I am hoping your foot is recovering but iii you have broken bones they are going to take time... so sorry what a set back! With love Annabel.xxx
Oh my gosh - rationing phone use! This world is getting so ridiculous and scary, and it is exhausting. Give me strength, Lord.
ReplyDeleteKathy, I know. Its nuts. All this reminds me we are in the world but not of it. There are all kinds of things now I think nar... I am not bowing down! Carry on doing good and building our homes. With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteIt was a week here. I started out by having gone out on Saturday a week ago and in coming home, overloaded my arms then stumbled going up the steps to the back porch. I hurt my hip. That put me down for a few days and made me take great care...However, it also meant I stayed home most all week long, as well as making meals here so that worked to my favor in some ways. Thursday, I went to my grandson's band concert and then on Friday 2 book sales for different library systems which was lovely. Knowing how I need bookcases now I figured I'd behave and only brought home about 8.
ReplyDeleteI finally heard from all the financial beings, and I shall be all right, able to manage on my own. I hadn't realized how tense I'd gone over the possible situation I was facing, until the last confirmation came in and then I burst into tears and couldn't stop crying. Mind you the first figure was doable, but it allowed no room at all for any emergency of any sort and with two twenty-year-old cars, older appliances and heat pump and needed maintenance I knew it would be hard to manage. Now I am assured I shall not have to look to a job nor my children to help. I am that relieved that I still get teary eyed thinking of this blessing.
I potted up tiny hybrid roses I'd purchased at the grocery. Three or four to a pot, about $2 each so I planted 7 new roses. Hybrids will grown larger, not as big as standard but they do so well in pots and most bloom all year long. I also planted older flower seeds.
My hip held up well during all the walking yesterday and I feel sure it is nearly mended.
One month anniversary of John's passing was this past week. I finally cleared out his dresser drawers. There is much more to be done but I finally felt I could do this part.
I have avoided all news, feeling I couldn't bear to be more anxious than I had been already. But I am keeping my eyes on prices, looking at what is happening about us. My usual shopping area is in a huge building boon at the moment, which seems to bode well but then we were in a big building boon during the 2008 fall...so we shall see.
Dear Terri, Of course it would be a terrible stress on top of everything being unsure of your financial position. I am so happy for you knowing now that you are ok and knowing where you stand is a great help and relief.
DeleteClearing out the clothes is a confronting job. Two of our local town thrift stores desperately needed mens clothing. Knowing this I thought well I can help there. I did it all in a day but kept a few things that Grandsons might like one day. Now with these things behind you and your hip getting better I hope this is a much easier week. With much love Annabel.xxx
Tom is so smart and cute! Now on to Phones wait ..I talk to my oldest daughter multiple times a day...I can't imagine not being able to. I have to keep up with the grandkids as well they both have phones now.
ReplyDeleteRest easy.. it's a busy time of year here and there. I want to know the honey crackles recipe please.
Dear Vickie, Thank you! I think your country is smarter and your energy is secure and I really dont think this will happen to you. Well I hope not. But all of us have had our power plants knocked over/blown up, it's not good. The honey crackles... in a saucepan put four heated tablespoons of butter, four of honey and two of sugar. Heat until sugar is melted through. In a big bowl of five ups of cornflakes pour this over and mix through really well. When they are all coated put into cases/patty pans and bake on medium one for ten minutes. Let cool and set. Kids love them. But so do adults! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteThanks I'm going to my aje this soon!
DeleteDear Annabel, that jam looks and sounds delicious. I love you words about time, this is really beautiful. Well done on making wonderful use of the produce. Thank you for your wonderful post, Annabel- you are amazing and such a gift to us all X lots of love Bridget
ReplyDeleteDear Bridge, Thank you! I love that two things together can give you enough to make jam... ie if you dont have enough berries use half apple. Once I used pear and peach. It was what I had. So it turned out really well and I gave a jar to my friend. Her husband told her to ask me what the heck it was as it was the best he had ever tasted! Ive never had pear and peaches at the same time since! Have a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteThe jam looks amazing - please may I have the recipe? Thank you.Do you have recipes listed anywhere on your blog that can be easily accessed?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I make all jam the same, half fruit half sugar and juice of one lemon. Ok in truth I lean it slightly a bit more on the fruit. This was half pear half Quince. If you know a recipe you would like in the search bar or even in google... search the name. I wish I had a seperate category but recipes have usually come as part of the story. I do have some posts concentrating on dry mixes, things to do with jam, baking days and so on... just try the search bar, I hope that helps!xxx
DeleteYour posts are always so beautiful and encouraging! I look forward to Friday morning to see what you've been doing this week! Your jam is so pretty! 😍
ReplyDeleteMy week has been productive. I visited the farmers market again this week and purchased a good sized jar of honey. Oh me, the prices there have gone up as well. But I wanted local, and honey is so useful and keeps for a very long time in the stockpile. I use it, but it's also a good pantry staple. I finished quilting a small wall hanging. I'm spring cleaning as well, and hoping to have that done soon. It's a little bit of decluttering but mostly scrubbing!
I hope your upcoming week is as lovely as last week!
Stacy in Virginia
Dear Stacy, Local pure honey is worth it. It has so many uses. Well done on completing the wall hanging! Bring cleaning is wonderful... I love the feeling when things are clean and fresh and organised. Well the new week is almost over! It has been pretty good though. I cant wait to get back here tomorrow night with a report. Thank you for being so encouraging! With love Annabel.xxx
