It was a very nice week. We had a family Easter brunch on Saturday. The sun was out and the kids all had a wonderful time hunting for easter eggs and speeding down the hill on the flying fox.
Since we had rain which is perfect timing to keep the grass growing and also to water my seedlings.
I managed a slightly less crazy pace and tried to balance running around with some more restful things ie paying bills and crochet and letter writing.
It is a wonder I made any progress with crochet with my friend always one inch away.
Still I completed all my squares and sewed them together.
I am on the third round of the border. My idea is that this should be quite wide. Then it will take me five thousand hours to sew all the ends in!
AND I faced up to laying out all my patchwork blogs to see how they looked together. I was worried because some blocks are more pinks, some more blues or lilacs and some more green.
With the help of a friend I loved how it looked and a layout was selected. I have joined the first row only...
I have a gorgeous floral sheet to back it. It will be really exciting to get that far!
My cook up for the week was sausage rolls.
I am not sure how many I made... maybe three dozen. This tray went to Chloe's and they are not quite brown enough because she was going to put them in her oven.
Lots of celery went into this recipe and what was left I chopped and froze.
At a garage sale I found four huge baking dishes. Exactly what I've been looking for. I can only ever find small ones. Very often I need a dish to make a lasagne and they are all full of in the freezer. Anyway it was a bit of an adventure but I came away with four great dishes and apparently one is a fancy brand and although I never would have known (if not told by my friend) it would be $400 to buy! Brands I do know well though are Pyrex and Corningware and when I see them I investigate!

That evening I was talking to a friend on the phone. She asked how was my day? I said it was fantastic and I was so excited to get these baking dishes. Then I said maybe not everyone would actually find this overly exciting but I did! She said that it was ok, one time someone gave her an actual hump of camel fat and guess who was the friend that found that exciting? Yes, that would be me. ๐ haha! She said I listened to her fat story so she could be happy for my baking trays story! It is truly a beautiful thing to have someone to celebrate with!
Friends gave me two beautiful Pumpkins. I also found lovely books for Mum.
In addition to the pumpkins I was given a bag of onions, a bag of passionfruit and cream!
I am still picking figs and have used a bucketful to trade and more to give. Often people ask me how to get trading going. Well, you give people stuff. Mostly they end up giving you stuff later on when they
have an excess they think of you. Or someone gives you something and you think of something you can give them back. Soon it is coming at you as if you are running a gauntlet. haha.
While I am on the subject.... tell people you cook, preserve, make jam... knit or crochet and tell people you are always looking for jars, a slow cooker, a dehydrator or whatever it is! Ask and you shall receive! Truly be brave! Whatever you need also pray about it!
Tom came over and because of making the sausage rolls I once again had left over pastry. I try to be teaching things as we go and I explained that we could throw out these last bits or we could make something fantastic. (Option one being not an actual option.)
So away we went. He has done this before so he was off and running.

This is the tray he took home. I needed up with some gluten free pastry treats as well.
On Tom's farm there is a huge windmill. While farms were always covered in windmills these days they have been replaced mostly by solar pumps. Only a few weeks ago I said if I find an old windmill I would put it up near the house because I think they are beautiful.
My farm helpers were fixing a water tank on a hill. This was surrounded by scrub. It was only a week later when I was told that there is an old windmill up there but it is not seen because of the trees!
So guess what we did!? Tom, the tractor, my helpers and me... off we went. I told Tom we were going on an adventure. For that he stuffed his pockets with biscuits and took a drink. ๐
First the spinning part came down.
Then the base...
It is having a clean up and a few repairs before we put it up on the hill near my house.
This next one is also going to be exciting for gardeners and farmers and maybe no one else.
Last year the sheep yards were cleaned out (after about 30 years) and the pile of sheep manure is probably the size of a small house. I know this is valuable fertiliser and some was added to my giant compost heap. But in my mind I imagined needing some kind of machine that could spread the manure around the paddocks ie a super spreader.
Last week it hit me what a waste it was just sitting there. It would be better to be in my cow paddocks any way at all to improve the soil and I have a tractor.
So this week about fifty loads (as in giant scoops) went into the paddock.
The tractor then bulldozed it around and now it is pouring with rain which would work it into the soil.
Hopefully soon I will see a difference in the grass in this area!
Now to the loveliness of a farm Easter.
The egg hunt was over a pretty big area and Lily was pretty good at it!
As you can see the sun shone and we all just enjoyed being together.
I over catered massively on purpose and sent everyone home with treats and dinner. So it was a happy success. ๐
I hope you had a beautiful Easter and a good week of nest building. Make hay while the sun shines, that is my motto. Maybe add to that busy hands = happy hearts. She works with her hands with delight... ok I have many of them! But do you notice how so often small things are big things and you feel absolute delight even if it is an old baking dish or a crochet edge.xxx
I have that exact Corningware baking dish and I absolutely love it! It gets used at least once a week. I can fit a full lamb roast with meat and veg for all of us, a triple batch of pasta bake, or four lots of Refrigerator Lasagne. It also makes the most wonderful bread and butter pudding—enough desserts to last the whole week in winter. My aunty gave it to me for my 21st. which was only a couple of years ago, of course! You’re going to love cooking in it and feeding everyone from it. Your sausage rolls look perfect. I’m a big fan of having a stash of sausage rolls, pies, and pasties in the freezer—it makes quick meals so easy, especially for a busy young mum. I see opportunity in those piles of sheep poo in the paddocks! I'm picturing lush, green grass and happy, fat sheep and cows in a couple of weeks. Everyone is talking about fuel prices, yet the roads still seem just as busy. Hannah’s staying with us all week now instead of driving home on weekends—it saves her about a week’s worth of grocery money. Diesel has doubled in just a month—$1.68/L up to $3.39/L. I’ve cut my weekly trip back to fortnightly. I never drove far anyway, but every litre not used is $3.39 still in the budget—and that adds up quickly.
ReplyDeleteDear Cath, It is really good Hannah can cut the commuting and stay with you. I am amazed at the traffic too. The tv ad... I noticed it had a little chart... of levels of steps to be taken. And we are on level 3... level 2 and 1 look to me to be rationing and restrictions...
DeleteWhat a great life you've had out of the corning ware dish! I love your suggestions for it. Your Aunt gave you the most useful present! I love corning ware and watch out for it but this is the nicest baking dish.
It has rained and each time it does I think of the manure and the grass! I wish I could send you a truckload. Although even though it was old once it was spread and rain added the perfume wasn't great. haha. I have cut travel... and I didnt travel a lot but the distances are long. My household benefits when Im home more anyway! Have a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
What a beautiful week, and it looks like you had a wonderful Easter with lots of precious family time. What an amazing discovery about the windmill...the Lord is truly GOOD. Your quilt is going to be so beautiful...you have nailed the positioning of the blocks...the perfect layout of colors and patterns. I hadn't realized the blocks were so big, until I saw them in relation to Sparkie. It will be beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteWe had a beautiful Easter. We were all better enough to be able to attend most of the Holy Week services, and for that we were so grateful. I have been knocking off some house and yard chores from our "to do" list, and that feels great. It feels great to be able to get outside and work in the yard again after a long winter! Today is supposed to be sunny and 16 C...after winter time, that feels like weather from a beach holiday!! Ha, ha. I am cleaning for company this weekend and also hopefully getting out to work on my flower beds a bit more. Wishing you and all Bluebirds a wonderful weekend.
xx Jen in NS
Dear Jen, Thank you! Well I think I made the blocks too big but I was daunted by smaller pieces. (Although Sparkie is also very small.) Now all that is left over from this quilt... which are smaller pieces... will be the next one and quite a bit smaller. I want it to be really scrappy. But first... the wool fabric winter quilts... I hope in a week or so I will be cutting that out. Spring sounds lovely, I know you will be busy with house guests but I bet you are ready to get planting. Visitors always make me spring into housework action which is good. This week I am getting ready for a visit from Sidney. Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteYour grandchildren sure had a wonderful time! A windmill! I love it!
ReplyDeleteWe love to trade too and have a neighbor who is happy to do so. Last week we gave them our crib that we no longer need for grandchildren just in time for their first grandchild. They shared a container full of grilled chicken with us this week. Win for us both.
Dear Lana, Good neighbours are such an asset. I am sure they were thrilled with the crib and you with the chicken! Watching out for each other is such a bonus too. This week I have more figs to trade, I am glad to have something, oh also onions. Have a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteAnnabel, I love your afghan with all the beautiful green and blue yarns - my favorite colors. And your Easter sounds lovely. Tom is such a good helper, too , and he's learning valuable life skills and philosophies. Wishing you a lovely upcoming week!
ReplyDeleteDear Jill, Thanks so much! Tractor green is big with the boys... I didnt ever see how I could make that good! But enough blues and greens together weirdly works! I even enjoyed it! The kids spent this morning helping collect pinecones for the fire. The three of them picked so many pinecones and had a huge amount of fun. I like how work and fun can be the same thing. Thank you for your kind comment! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteWhat a wonderful week! Sparkie is so cute! Nancy
ReplyDeleteThank you Nancy!xxx
DeleteHello Annabel
ReplyDeleteYour Easter with the children looked glorious, Lily's beaming smile will be seen in space I'm sure. A windmill will be a fantastic thing to see whirring around and I hope your grass prospers with all the muck.
Sparkies help when zero dog help is needed makes me laugh so much, sitting on the crochet, pulling the wool, sitting on the quilt. So cute.
It has been a busy week here too. Easter was lovely with family and guests around. I decorated with the Easter things we have had for years and brought flowers in from the garden. I cooked a big joint of lamb which gave leftovers and a homemade lemon cheesecake. Lamb is very much a treat now it's so expensive.
We have used parsnips and purple sprouting broccoli from the garden.
I decorated a window sill in church for Easter and picked so many flowers from the garden to take that when my arrangement was finished I was able to give another lady lots of flowers to use in hers.
We planted our first early potatoes and my husband wove willow wigwams from willow prunings. He's planted sweet peas around the wigwams. A client kindly gave him four big pots for the garden, nice green ones she didn't want.
I cleared out the under stairs cupboard,( big black hole of doom) and took donations to the charity shop and filled the car with stuff for the tip. Found some treasures too.
I washed and valeted my car myself saving £40 on a commercial wash etc and saving fuel not going into town.
I redeemed consumer research panel points for TK Maxx vouchers and brought three bath towels, three hand towels, a bath mat and a new milk pan, all very much needed. I used points off my chemist card to buy my husband a good hair comb to replace his old broken one and bought some more new underwear to replace some very tired old items. I'm buying a few pieces every month to spread the cost.
Had great finds in the charity shop and bought two tunic tops and a pack of new embroidered hankies.
I used vouchers and looked for deals in the supermarkets and was pleased to find a good deal on chicken thighs which have been portioned out and frozen.
Best wishes to all Bluebirds.
Penny in the UK
Dear Penny, What a huge week! I think we all have a pit of doom somewhere. Mine was in the laundry. I also found things I wanted in the clear out! Like a reward...
DeleteYour husbands clients often give him good things! Two nice pots will be put to use no doubt. I love that you decorate and make things lovely and the church too. Having so many flowers is wonderful for this. This effort I think is very cheering. To everyone.
Your Easter meal sounds delicious. Also that is another celebration and uplifting ... I am thinking a lot on how keeping up morale and taking time to enjoy is so important.
I really really like the sound of your husbands garden structures and really hope to see how these look when the sweetness come out. It will be glorious! The Attic 24 crochet blanket called Sweat Pea won me over to these gorgeous colours they come in. So pretty.
You really achieved a lot and cleaning the car properly inside is a big jo, well done. A clean car is lovely too.
I hope this week will be equally good! With love Annabel.xxx
Annabel, what a lovely Easter you had. I was invited to dinner at the Certified Family Home where my daughter lives. I brought the deviled eggs.
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous about the windmill and the sheep manure! I once was given alpaca poop and it was the basis of my raised beds.
Had to LOL about the camel fat. What did you do with it? Uncle Jack (my husband's uncle and a real character) was given all of the fat from a bear. It was pure white and didn't smell like bear. He declared it made the best piecrust ever! (This may or may not be true). He owned a restaurant at the time and everyone used lard in the 1930s and 40s. He served the pies to his customers and swore he got nothing but compliments.
Most of my energy this week was spent working on my finances, especially US income tax that is due next Wednesday the 15th. I hate it when I let it go this long...and it is not the first time, although not a usual thing.
Best wishes to you and all of the Bluebirds.
That was me, as usual LOL.
DeleteWhat a beautiful week! I love seeing your sweet family and pup and creative projects! Your quilt and blanket are so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI've rested this week after having shoulder and tummy issues. I'm happy to say today is much better. By next week I'll be back to working hard and making good progress!
Wish you and the Bluebirds a lovely week!
Stacy in Virginia
Dear Stacy, I hope you are feeling much better. The new week is flying by already... I am heading out to pick another round of figs... hopefully! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel, there are two things that I am really excited for you and that is the beautiful bakeware and the huge mountain of cow manure. Both would make me very happy lol! The windmill is beautiful and an iconic piece of farm machinery, love it! Your Easter sounds wonderful with the grandkids really enjoying running around in the sunshine and finding eggs. Your crochet blanket is gorgeous and I don’t envy you having to weave in those ends and your quilt is so pretty. You’ve inspired me with your beautiful sausage rolls and I need to make your pasties too!
ReplyDeleteOur Easter was busy, with plenty of food shared and spending time with our family, it was tiring but like you making enough to share and have for a few more meals. Have a restful weekend xox
Dear Stephanie, I know you would understand the baking dishes. In your photos it looks to me that you have some really lovely and good sized ones. I know you have been through the million ends type blankets! For Mum she hates sewing knitted items together. Your Easter cooking looked delicious and I am glad you had the family all celebrating together, with love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI love this post so much, Annabel! Your Easter looks like so much fun. Is Scarlett taller than Harper or is she standing on something?
ReplyDeleteThe crochet blanket is amazing, though I don’t envy you having to weave in the ends lol. I can’t wait to see it with the border completed. The quilt! How beautifully the squares come together.
I have baked fruit muffins this week, including some for the freezer. That feels like a real victory! We also made a chocolate cake. I still want to get lots more baking done, thankfully I have some very eager helpers.
I made it a goal to not spend any money on crafting materials this year and we’re now quarter of the year down and so far so good. I’m working on a large cross stitch and a crochet blanket, but I think I might to do a small project so I have a finish. The long projects can feel like a bit of a slog.
I contacted our insurance company to see if we qualify for a discount due to our work and have reduced our premiums by over $300 a year. I bought some party supplies for my daughters birthday for 75% off.
I hope you have a lovely time with Sidney visiting, I’m sure you have some exciting things planned.
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen, Thank you! Scarlett is miles taller than Harper and the gap is getting bigger. Harper is petite like her Mum. Lucy was tiny and her goal was to get to 5 foot. Which she did. I am five foot 1 and a half. Have to mention the half lol. But Lucy was so small it was a mystery as she didnt grow for a year around 10. She even had a bone scan. Then we went into the family tree... and her Great Grandmother on Mums side was 4 foot 8 and had 13 children! No one had ever mentioned her height I knew so many stories but not that! My Nan was 13. So that explained it... Scarlett is going to be much taller... she is athletic and Harper is a ballerina and into gymnastics.... which Im glad of as she can embrace being little!
DeleteWell done on getting the insurance reduced! $300 is a lot! I know you feel my pain on sewing all the ends in as I remember a striped blanket you did! and its great to be working on projects with things you have. I tend to have. few things going at once... depending on what I feel like!
Have a good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
The pictures of your grandchildren are gorgeous. It is so nice to see kids being kids and having fun.
ReplyDeleteI'll second your advice to put the word out regarding things you need. One neighbour always saves jars for me as she knows that I enjoy making jams and chutneys. She also passes cardboard boxes onto my husband to use when sending out things that he sells on online. I pass my favourite gardening magazine to her once I have read it. Some other neighbours have turned up with things that they were ready to throw out asking if my husband can sell them as they can't be bothered to do it themselves or even take them to charity shops or the tip. Another neighbour gives us garden produce.
It is amazing what turns up when people realise that you might have a use for it.
Dear Tracy, That sounds fantastic... putting the word out is the thing. Also getting to know neighbours is a big bonus too! It sounds like your husband has a nice business going there. I pretty much never met a jar I didnt like! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI’ve watched Justin Rhodes and Joel Slaton on YouTube and they have chickens run after their cows and sheep. They run their cows and sheep in the same paddocks because it stops the parasite cycle in both animals. And then they have the chickens come through a couple days later because the chickens eat all of the fly larvae out of the poop and then they distribute it throughout the yard. Just thought I’d pass it on. You have a lovely blog and I read it every week.
ReplyDeleteThat is actually a very good idea. Chickens just love bugs! I cant do it as even in the day time I lose chickens to foxes. I have tried and tried and always have losses. Thank you so much for commenting and letting me know you are reading. Also I like those you tube channels and I watch homesteading type ones and some cooking etc... you tube is way better than tv these days! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteEaster Sunday was a day I spent alone, the first 24 hour period I'd been completely alone since John died. I didn't mind being home. It was rainy and cooling day. I made a non-traditional slow cooking stew which was super good and comforting. I worked on a jigsaw puzzle and listened to sermons that had aired.
ReplyDeleteI had a rather busy week in and out of the house. On Monday I went to an appointment, ran more paperwork errands, donated stuff that has been sitting for three months waiting to go out, visited with my family in that town then to the grocery to pick up free eggs (best customer coupon), half and half, and butter and other things I didn't plan to buy and likely didn't really need but got as they are all good solid foods and will be handy to have.
On Tuesday I did housework, sadly overdue and got much done. Debated changing my heavier quilt for the light warmer weather one. Glad I didn't as the temperature decided to lean harder on the cooler side! I puttered around the house all day long. One small joy that day was when I went into John's music room and started picking up sheet music and found the cutest little song lyrics he'd penned at some point lately which included the line "Love my wife and go on a date". It made me smile and feel his love for me was ever present. Then I sorted out my workroom/guestroom closet. I felt it was a day's work well done.
Wednesday I worked a little in my yard, specifically cleaning up about the tree where some of John's ashes had been scattered (it had rained since then). I divided some hybrid tea roses that had gotten big and were too close together, so now I have two more pots of roses (not made about it either!). Then I divided some iris and planted a potion and set the rest aside. I had the children to keep that afternoon. We donned jackets and drank hot cocoa outdoors. It was lovely and sunny but it was also very cool.
On Thursday I cleaned out the children's toybox, which took far longer than I thought it might. Then I completed cleaning up my workroom/guestroom. That afternoon I took the three grands to the library and then to the Strawberry Patch to get fresh strawberry ice cream and then over to the park where they recently put new play equipment. My son grilled burgers that evening and we ate together as a family. Then he gave me a tour of his beautiful garden that is already looking as though it means to produce abundantly of all the good things to eat.
And yesterday I spent the whole day with my lovely Bess for coffee, had a long conversation with one of my pastors, and then had a long afternoon visit with a friend that included lunch, riding along the country back roads from the restaurant and sharing some of those iris with her. It was a good week!
I’m sorry you’ve lost your husband. I must have missed that earlier.
DeleteBe gentle on yourself. It takes a long time to recover and adjust.
Love
Kate
Dear Terri, You are doing so well. I think maybe frame that little verse John wrote. I dont mind being on my own either. It is nice to get out and be with people but also nice to just have some quiet time. You achieved a lot and your sons garden sounds beautiful! He got that from you!
DeleteI am so glad you have such a lovely family and also a Church family for support. Well done you are amazing! With love Annabel.xxx
It is always a delight to see your grandchildren and the four legged best friend.Tom is an amazing young man. His name fits him and he honors your Dad.
ReplyDeleteThank you Glenda, Yes Tom is so like my Dad. I feel I get to experience what Dad was like as a kid! Goodness me the apple doesn't fall far from the tree as they say!
DeleteI am heading off now to pick figs... hopefully and the kids will help. We have the tractor and the big ladder! With much love, Annabel.xxx
Annabel, what a productive and fun week you had! Your Easter looked like such fun. Your Sparkie and my Gracie (Part yorkie and part Jack Russell) would make quite the team. My Gracie likes to assist me when I am sitting working on mending or crocheting too, much to my frustration:) I call her my personal trainer when I am doing my yoga. She likes to do downward facing dog when I do it and she licks my face to encourage me (I guess?) on other floor poses. Such personalities these dogs have! Your afghan is so pretty. What a lovely gift to receive. I would love to have your sausage roll recipe as they are not very common here in southwest Virginia and I cannot find a recipe. Your Tom has the sweetest smile that reaches up to his eyes. What a darling boy. And so helpful and kind. The windmill find was a treat! This week I worked in my garden and discovered lots of lettuce starts from a lettuce from last season. I have been trying to give them away. I must have 50! To feather my nest, I made and froze potpies and a casseroles. I planted more radish, kohlrabi and a different variety of lettuce seeds. I planted my favorite lettuce which comes from Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home here in Virginia. It is a buttery type and as far as I know, Monticello is the only place to find these seeds. Fortunately for me my dear friend works there and will send me a package when I need them. Some years they reseed themselves. The rest of my week was spent teaching my 5th graders which included a fieldtrip to the local university science department. It was a good day and I am happy to say my class behaved beautifully. Those kids are so sweet. I am glad I took this long term sub job. the weather has turned lovely of late, but we are still waiting for those April showers to bring our May flowers. Blessings to you and the bluebirds. Marley in the Mountains
ReplyDeleteDear Marley, It sounds like you have a lovely class to teach. I wont share this sausage roll recipe as it was a lot of work and not better than my old way... but a good recipe is Jamie Oliver sausage rolls as his recipes are great.
DeleteForzen pot pies and casseroles will be so very handy. Mum and Dad always kept Jack Russells! And had lots of babies! You had a really busy week! With love Annabel.xxx
What an amazing week you and your family had! Thanks so much for sharing your grands with us. The blanket and quilt both look amazing. I'm so inspired! I'm always most happy when I find or am gifted an item that helps me do my job better. So I totally get your joy over the baking pan. ๐
ReplyDeleteMy family and I are busy with Spring sports, fellowship, and yard work. I'm thankful that God has stretched my time to attend my children's activities. We had chicks hatch on Passion Week. So, new life in our home.
I taught our children that God's favorite color is green. ๐ So we have been enjoying a lot of green as the world wakes up from its winter slumber.
Blessings to you all,
Leslie (Ohio)
Dear Leslie, Congratulations on chickens hatching! I love chicks! Your season sounds very busy, Spring would be exciting after snow for sure! I am glad you see how good these baking dishes are! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteOh a windmill how lovely ! There is just something so comforting about seeing a windmill.
ReplyDeleteI bet your paddocks will come alive with all that amazing fertilizer and rain.
Such fun Easter pictures. Such a blessing to have family and friends close by.
Lynd
Dear Lynd, It is funny but everyone who has seen my windmill even in bits has said how beautiful it is! Another week and it will be up I think. We had rain washing the fertiliser into the soil! This week is flying by! With love Annabel.xxx
