It seems like a long time since last Friday! We had a few warm days and a day of pouring rain. It was amazing. More is meant to be coming next week plus lower temperatures. Could I hope these are the last days of summer. Technically there are only ten days to go but for most of my life the first two weeks of March can still be hot. However, the last few years this hasn't happened. Cooler days and rain would be amazing!
This probably means some of you are itching for Spring in the same way I am waiting on Autumn!
Chloe hosted a Valentines Day afternoon tea. This was so lovely.
She included a lesson on Saint Valentines and how he became a saint. We all loved it.
We all had cake and little tokens and verses to bring home. It was so special.
In the thrift store I had amazing luck. This partial Royal Albert dinner set reminded me of Limoges and the whole lot was $20. Also a piece of cotton with rosebuds and several extra cups and saucers.
All my china is either white or pink roses.... so it kind of mixes and matches. 😊
This was not at all what I set out to find in the thrift store but, there you go, this is the nature of thrifting!
The swap tables were a success too with cucumbers and an "I forgot to look for two days" sized zucchini.
I lost track of meals but today I roasted a lovely piece of beef and veggies.... I supplied gravy and all Chloe had to do was heat it up. I think they will get roast meat for sandwiches as well.
Ike has grown and this week he really started to study faces and respond to voices. He is just more interested in everything.
Today my helper came in the little kids nap time. Well, we just have fun doing everything and even packing eggs is somehow hilarious.
If you remember I was given six pregnant Murray Greys for Christmas. The farmer told me they were due in April/May. At the time I thought they looked pretty fat, but what would I know.
Lately I thought they are really fat. But I honestly never went out and inspected closer. In my diary I had to begin daily rounds April 1.
Well, suddenly three calves were born!
The other three look like this.
If you cast your eye to the cow in the back right of this picture.....
Check out that wide load!
This all worked in my favour as this apparently would make them Murray Grey calves.
They are just beautiful. So now I am doing the daily or twice daily rounds. Last night I went out at dusk. They are all very quiet.
I have been working on Ike's blanket. It takes seven squares to cover the top of a single bed plus overhang slightly. As I intend to do a wide border this will mean it drapes over the sides nicely. I think it will be nine squares long. I am really loving it as each square is different. My friend gave me a bag of new blues and greens to work in and last night that gave me a heap of new possibilities!
Today I was given a lovely bag of brown onions. We also inspected Chloe's fig tree and it is so enormous and covered that a plan has been hatched to make a platform and use the tractor as a kind of cherry picker. I already have promised buckets of figs to a few people!
So a busy week. I didn't get a stitch sewn on my last patchwork block! That one will have to carry over to next week.
I hope you had a great week. How did you build up your nest? Are you looking forward to the change of seasons? Different seasons offer different opportunities! One of my opportunities next week is to harvest a lot of basil... the heat then the rain have made it go crazy! xxx
Tanya H, I emailed you as I lost your new address.xxx
Annabel what a lovely full week you have had. Valentine's Day at Chloe's looks so beautiful, her tea set is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see you have new additions to your herd, the baby cow looks adorable.
Tom is definitely your little helper and a wonderful big brother to Ike.
I have been on the road all week, so nothing happening at home. Today will be catch up with laundry and cleaning. We have a bad winter storm coming in with snow and ice today.
I took advantage of being in another town and went to the 2 thrift stores there. I found a beautiful pullover sweater for 99 cents and 2 summer dresses for $2.40 each. I love finding bargains while we are traveling.
I collected apples from hotels these last 2 weeks so I will be baking an apple crisp for our time home this weekend. I usually crochet while we are traveling, though this last trip I was able to spend time with an old girlfriend, so next week I will be back to crocheting.
Dear Rosanne, Thank you! I know you have continued to e on the road a lot. But thrift stores are a highlight! You had great bargains! You never really know what you might come home with. And nice to see a friend! I hope you had more good finds this week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteHi Annabel
ReplyDeleteThe Valentine’s tea looks gorgeous! I’m a bit obsessed with the cake with different flavours. Great finds at the thrift store, and new calves! What a lovely week.
I really like the colours of Ike’s blanket. He is a handsome wee man! His brothers look very proud.
I’m not sure I have much to report, this week has felt very busy and a bit frustrating at work. I’m hoping for smoother days next week. I did manage to cook most meals in the slow cooker which meant evenings were simpler.
Our pear and apple trees are covered so that will be this weekends job!
Have a lovely weekend
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen, I am sorry about work. :( I hope this week has been smoother.
DeleteThe slow cooker is the biggest help, even if it's a component of a meal let alone the whole meal!
I am thrilled for you that you have so much fruit to harvest! My pears are so close! With much love Annabel.xxx
Hello Annabel (and everyone),
ReplyDeleteThat Valentine's tea is simply beautiful, and that china! It's lovely to see the kids - you can see Ike's little personality coming out in the photo. Your cooking looks so good, and those cows starting to calve are wonderful. I've not heard of this breed of cattle before you got some, and they're lovely animals.
This week saw a lot of cooking & baking (including some apple turnovers and brownies for a Valentine's gift for a friend), some knitting, pruning my rose bushes (in my area they say to do it around Valentine's Day), and spending some time with my Dad and the horses. My follow-up from surgery appointment was yesterday & all is well! One of my bathroom double-sink vanity doors was hanging at a precipitous angle - I am not handy! - and I was able to figure out how to fix it myself. This must have saved money, and it feels very good to take care of something like that on my own, no matter how small it might be.
Produce in local grocery stores continues to be a bit hit-or-miss; there is still food and my community won't go hungry, but I do see big blank spaces on shelves and produce sections, probably due to the snowstorms elsewhere affecting transport, maybe also the fires affecting growers? It seems like what we do get does not last as long or as high quality as past years. It will soon be time to start seeds and I'm really looking forward to planning out my garden and what to add to the fourth Greenstalk. I'd love to hear what other ladies are planning and noticing, if anyone wants to share!
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Kathy
I also would love to see what others plant in their Greenstocks. I have two five tier and am adding two 3 tier this year.........Nancy
DeleteHi Nancy,
DeleteMy Greenstalks are the original 5-tiers & I live in growing zone 7B. I've had good repeat success with lettuce, radishes, Swiss chard (silverbeet), bell peppers, wax beans, green beans (bush beans, Blue Lake 274 or Calima), cucumbers, zucchini and yellow summer squash, green onions, tomatoes, basil and parsley. Carrots grew luxuriant foliage and teeny tiny sparse roots, so I won't do that again. The squashes and their roots take up a lot of space, and I used plant supports for those, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Be careful to plant determinate tomato varieties if you do - I accidentally planted indeterminate tomatoes and they fruited well, but absolutely took over everything. I plant my tomatoes in separate raised beds now. Vincas, marigolds, nasturtiums, and gomphrena have all flourished in the top tiers, to attract pollinators and just for prettiness. Would love to hear your plans! Rainbow Gardens has some nice Youtube videos on planting in Greenstalks & square foot gardening, too. Hope you have a great day.

Kathy
Thank you Kathy! Well done on fixing the vanity door! I am like you, I can sew and crochet and knit... but I look at repairs and screws and things and am not confident! Thank you also for helping Nancy! I agree... my best successes have been lettuces, herbs etc.
DeleteThank you also for your store report. Very interesting. Snow storms and transport... also people stocking up because of storms must wipe a lot of shelves. Its kind of a reminder that everything isn't always there... I never really got the shock of things not being there until Covid. Since that time things have never returned to the same.
My dream would to be a Greenstalk full of Pansies. I adore them! With love Annabel.xxx
Annabel, the blanket that you are making for Ike is gorgeous. Thomas is always smiling when he works with you. What a blessing having four grandchildren that live right by you.
ReplyDeleteBlessings and love,
Glenda
Thank you Glenda! I have made a bit of progress this week on the blanket. I am really enjoying it! And Tom was here today too! He got to help on the tractor so he was smiling for sure! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel, gosh Chloe is a superstar, four tiny children and setting up such a wonderful afternoon tea. Chloe has such style and grace- so artistic! I think we know where she gets that from. I love those tea cups and those plates are beautiful. I think that roast looks delicious and would be very nourishing too. I think you have had a beautiful week. Ike’s blanket is looking delightful, what a lucky boy. Lots of love, Bridget
ReplyDeleteDear Bridge,
DeleteYes Chloe always sets an amazing table and makes things special. And it FEELS special. You cant beat a good roast and Ive been blessed with meat. On the theme of tables I have decided I want to do an Easter table. But I'll need to think on this! I hope your week is going well, it is warm here but with a storm coming I think. With much love Annabel.xxx
Annabel what a wonderful week you have had and Ike's blanket will be beautiful. So lovely of you to cook wonderful meals for Chloe and family while she is recovering and what wonderful finds you had in the op shop, those tea cups, saucers and side plates are adorable along with the lovely rose fabric.
ReplyDeleteA belated congratulations to Chloe and family and yourself for the safe arrival of adorable Ike.
We have been busy this week and finished painting the tank stand weatherboard shed in white and now all the doors are painted a lovely Boston Ivy similar to a eucalyptus green which matches in well with all the green trees that surround the property. DH has also been cleaning up the over spray on the concrete and I from the garage door from painting the single weatherboard garage at the front of the property. DH has agreed that putting down drop cloths and hand painting the upper and lower weatherboards saves a lot of cleanup time lol.
We have been saving for a while to have solar batteries put in for the home to capture extra power from our solar panels on the roof. Our power around here is sketchy to say the least and we suffer brownouts and blackouts quite regularly even if it just looks like a heavy breeze or a slight storm is approaching. Happy to say we had it put in and we are really loving that we have power security during a blackout and are not only supplying free power for the home but exporting the rest back to the electricity grid to help alleviate the service charge costs of our electricity. I am finding it fascinating to watch the app to see how much power is in our battery, how much we are using in power, and what is being exported back to the grid. This will be a huge saving in our electricity costs and give us peace of mind in blackouts.
I also cleaned by hand some more of the underside of the patio colorbond roof and am about 3/4's of the way there and also cleaned the vinyl cladding back home wall. It is amazing how much dirt gets on them and it is looking so much cleaner and brighter white.
We have been also decluttering and going through the home and either selling good items we know we will not use, donating them to those who could use them or throwing items that are no longer useful.
Hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead.
Lorna.
Dear Lorna, Well done on so much painting. I think white and eucalyptus are so fresh and lovely. I know it is a lot of work but the immediate effects are fantastic.
DeleteI think the batteries are a very good investment. Power security is a big thing. These days increasingly so. If the grid is down... do you go over on to stored battery power? It is ten years since we looked into solar... (no doubt a lot changed since then) but with the solar set up if the grid was down we still would have no power. However batteries were pretty new then. I would like to go off grid... and have solar and batteries.... but I need to learn a lot more. I think it's wonderful what you have done.
You have been very busy and productive! With love Annabel.xxx
Hi Annabel and thank you really happy with what we have done with the painting and having the battery installed.
DeleteThe solar and batteries are still grid connected and the home runs off the battery constantly and is charged from the 6.6KW solar panels. If the grid goes down the whole home still runs on the battery power that is stored in it. We installed a 24kw battery (3 x 8kw stacked batteries) in the tower. The battery tower has the inverter on top of it and the system has an auto cut off and a built in fire extinguisher in it should anything go pear shaped.
Figure that with the hot weather in summer and using an 8kw air conditioner after lunch till bedtime and a 3.5kw air conditioner in the bedroom all night that if we had a blackout for the whole of the next day we would be fine and the home would run on what battery power that was left.
I hope this info helps and if you want to know more feel free to email me and I can let you know the good systems from the bad lol in companies.
Lorna.
Beautiful week and beautiful grandchildren. Love the tea cups and tea party. Have not seen that brand of cows in the states. Does anyone know if we have them in the states?. I have 2 five tier Greenstalks and just got two more 3 tier. What do you all plant in yours if you have them? Yesterday was a lovely day weatherwise but today cold and windy in NW Indiana. Thank you for another Friday letter Annabel! I love reading them! Nancy
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Nancy! I agree with Kathys answer... lettuces are wonderful. Things that normally get bugs just dont get bugs in a greens talk! Its fantastic. Bugs must be too lazy to travel so far upwards. However for flower displays they are also stunning! Thank you for your kindness! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteYou have had a fabulous week! Love that Chloe was able to put on a beautiful afternoon tea for you all! The table scape is very pretty. It’s all in the little details! How amazing that you have baby calves added to the farm too! Your blanket is beautiful and I love the colours you’ve chosen for Ike, he is also growing so quickly. The roast dinner for Chloe looks delicious too! xox
ReplyDeleteThanks Stephanie. I stole this idea of greens and blues from a photo I saw. It looked very much like patchwork... but in crochet. Im finding squares not too daunting and getting heaps done. The good old roast dinner still is one of the nicest meals and Chloe got cold meat to make sandwiches which is a good deal. Ive been very lucky with being given meat though. I just realised (despite it always being the case) Feb is a shot month and almost over! This is all too fast for me! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteWhat a wonderful post. The china both on Chloe's table and from the thrift store are gorgeous. Your food looks wonderful too.
ReplyDeleteI worked at the food bank, handing out food for three hours on two different days. This is a weekly thing for me.
I made two kinds of soup - cauliflower and sausage lentil with vegetables. Made a pork roast in the oven, with a spice rub I made up from spices on hand. Served it with corn from the freezer and mashed potatoes and gravy. Made chow mein, almond joy cookies, and tostadas. Also made a batch of herb muffins to go with the soup.
I shelled kidney beans that we grew in the garden last year. They have been drying in our shop. I shelled about five pounds over two days.
Hope everyone has a good week.
Nancy in Eastern Washington
Dear Nancy, Thank you! Well done at working at the food bank. This is important work. Your cooking for the week sounds delicious. Amazing work on the kidney beans! This week I had some more thrift store good luck! I hope you are having a good week too. With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteWhat amazing bargains you got at the op shop, the fabric is beautiful 😍 I can’t wait to see what you make with that!
ReplyDeleteThe afternoon tea looked so pretty, Chloe has a real knack for making everything beautiful.
What a blessing to have your herd safely multiplying! AND what a Christmas gift!
I was a bit under the weather this week, the mind was willing, but the body said no! Thats ok, I’m in an adjustment period in general at the moment since resigning my job, so I spent time thinking on what new routines and roles might look like. I can’t say I’ve nutted it out yet, but I will 😊
Have a lovely week everyone
From Cheryl
When I retired I spent the first six months or so seeming to do nothing but sleep. I didn't realize how exhausted and sleep deprived I had become working all those years. Let your body be your guide.
DeleteNancy in Eastern Washington
Dear Cheryl, I agree with Nancy, you may actually have years of tiredness to catch up on. When you are just used to being tired it is a shock not to feel tired and it might take a few months even to de stress and feel better. I would just take a time off/reset. As soon as you start to feel better all the ideas will start flooding in! Then you will be back off and running! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteLovely tea things for both Chloe and your own 'new' thrifted pieces.
ReplyDeleteAnother week of continuing to do a pantry freezer challenge. Someone mentioned perhaps the Valentine's Day sales had pushed off the normal sales routine but as there are hardly any this week either, I think it is just the new 'normal. Typically, in any given week I find about ten items worth purchasing but lately my lists are about half that size. Since I've been working on this challenge now for two months unless I was dead out of something I haven't gone into the grocery stores at all.
We went to one on Monday afternoon, as I needed to stock the lactose free milk for a grandchild who would be staying the night and buying some regular for our own usage, as well as eggs and cheese. In the past, I've bought cheese, milk and eggs in bulk and it's lasted us until the next cycle of sales but eight weeks in and no sales...
One of our Valentine's day traditions is to wait until the day after Valentine's and then go buy half off chocolate. Two days after Valentine's this year we went into a grocery that had two huge shopping carts overflowing with chocolates in heart shaped boxes. NOT marked down, just removed from the shelf and when I asked if they would mark down they said, "No"...I was flummoxed! We went to a pharmacy and John found two boxes still on the shelf for half price and got both but the pricing on them shocked me as neither had a dozen pieces of candy in them.
We had a very warm week and are currently having much needed rain. Tomorrow we're slipping back into freezing weather for three nights. That is worrying as I saw a few peach blossoms on the trees. I'm hoping it's only the very earliest varieties that had begun to bloom and that they were pollinated but we shall see. I heard on tv this week that Florida was hit hard by the deep freezes and that strawberries were affected. Since we are the next door state we benefit from their glut with low pricing in our area. I guess we shall see how that goes.
I am intent on using what we have and determining what means to go to in order to keep our grocery bill lowered when I come off this Pantry/Freezer challenge. I'm not too keen on working super hard but there are things that are easy to do that require only a minimal amount of labor on my part, like canning and cutting up whole chicken into portions to freeze and such as that and yet creates a substantial savings over all.
Terri, I forgot to sign my name to last week's comment, but I'm the one that suggested the lack of grocery specials might be related to all of the Valentine's specials. Well, you were and are right--I didn't see any good deals AT ALL this week. If this is the new normal, I wanna go back to the old abnormal!
DeleteDear Terri, Others are saying this too. I thought the snow storm and people stocking up. In all honesty our stores have never gone completely back to normal since covid. The next shock here has been Easter eggs are out... and they are so dreadfully expensive it is ridiculous. We are going to have to adjust a lot of things I think. With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteYou've had a beautiful week! ❤️ Thank you for sharing all the lovely things in your weeks with us! I enjoyed all the pictures and your thrifting finds!
ReplyDeleteI found a few good clothing pieces this week at our thrift shop. They've started putting the really nice dishes online to get more money on them. I think that defeats the purpose of thrift shops! I do always look at the sheets and blankets for fabric sources now that many of our fabric stores are out of business. I worked on kitchen chores like using various produce items before they go bad! And I stayed home some to work here and also not spend any money! Some weeks, less outings mean more productive time at home!
Blessings to you and the Bluebirds!
Stacy in Virginia
Dear Stacy, Fabric and yarn stores have closed here too. There are still some but they aren't wonderful and quality is not great either. For $35 a meter you can get nice cotton. So... thrift stores it is. Also it's a fun hunt. I totally agree that staying home and getting things done is a huge saver and I feel much more on top of things and productive. There is a lot of home economy on keeping things used up into the menu and not wasting anything.
DeleteI have a friend I go thrift store shopping with. More and more items are now from Temu and really cheap stores... and it's not cotton. It's the older better quality bedding, curtains and dresses that might be good fabric. I consider cottons, fabric, wool etc all good investments.... when it's working out so cheaply. I am glad you had some good finds! With love Annabel.xxx
Annabel
ReplyDeleteI love the Valentine's tea. I always love a tea table. And your china pieces you just thrifted are gorgeous as well as the fabric. I have several tea cups stashed away for now.
And Tom is as cute as ever.
The cows are gorgeous and if that wide load isn't twins maybe you'll be getting a nice big bull calf.
Ike is adorable and his blanket is going to be just perfect! The colors seem to fit his name somehow.
We've had some warmer days which is nice as far as not having to haul in as much wood.
I made a tea towel and just need to crochet a border on it, but it's for me so no hurry.
I've been using the colder days to bake and oatmeal raisin cookies are the current favorite.
I had two of my grandkids spend two nights and we had lots of fun. Crafting and having a movie night which is their favorite. My grandson is a little butterball from the steroids but he's so cute! I was shocked initially though.
He's so sweet he hauled in wood and groceries and shoveled snow off the deck. Haha he'll run you over to carry in the toilet paper! Kids are so funny.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead.
XOXO
Vicky
Dear Vicky,
DeleteYou would have loved this afternoon tea for sure! This cow is still going. I sure dont want a big bull calf.. but at this stage if she safely delivers a calf I will just be grateful. She hasn't got any smaller!
Im sure the Grandkids had a beautiful time with you! Your Grandson sounds like Tom just wanting to help.
I hope Spring is around the corner and you dont have to haul wood anymore. With much love Annabel.xxx
You are such an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteThe tea looked lovely! I am looking forward to spring here in my area.
Ways I built up my nest.... well, to be honest, I am practicing being mindful of not purchasing things I do not need really but for things I needed I try to be truly mindful of cost and asking myself questions. I didn't feel super this week and then I had to go to a conference, so my focus was a little more out of the home (which doesn't happen all too often) but this coming week I have so "fluffing" planned.
I hope you have been feeling better Chrissy. Really attending to things, cleaning, refreshing, re arranging... it all costs nothing and makes things so fresh. I like those home days best of all! Thank you for such kind words! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteHi Annabel
ReplyDeleteMy comments haven't been coming through so this is a test to see if I've fixed the problem.
Penny in the UK
Penny thanks for persisting! This worked..xxxx
DeleteWhat a beautiful table setting! Chloe simply amazes me. Your china is lovely. What a find! Your grandchildren are too cute. Thank you for sharing photos of them with us. Inspired by your big cook up.
ReplyDeleteOur family is busy as ever. Ohio got hit by more snow, but nothing like New York state.
Blessings to all!
Love, Leslie
Dear Leslie, Thank you so much! I guess everyone is starting to look forward to Spring with this much snow! I did see photos of NYC. Wow! I know you are very bigger. I think bigger kids who need driving around is a very busy period of life. I hope your week is going well! With love Annabel.xxx
