A big week! I like having plenty to report!
Each day as I pick the fresh produce I wash it and plan... This was another garden meal (or three) that was just delicious.
The basil is really thriving so soon I will be harvesting bunches. And the pear trees are really coming on now.
This week it was my eldest Grandson's turn to come and stay. Usually I try and plan and save good jobs that they can help with. My helper was here yesterday and Sidney was straight to work, climbing into the tractor.
The assignment was to move some old working dog kennels away from the house yard. They are not used and so they have gone into storage. This was great fun apparently.
Pictured are the dogs who are most defiantly not working.
Next... I have some trees in pots.... but the smaller pot is inside a larger basket. When it is windy they end up blowing over. I showed the boys the pot and the problem. No worries, they went and got the mower and the trailer.
Next thing they appear (proudly) with a nice load of rocks. I was sure to say wow they are just right! It's a great day for getting rocks!
Sidney loaded up his little trailer and pushed each load up the ramp. Then he lifted each rock into place and he seemed never to tire.
It worked out perfectly, I am really pleased. This is one tiny project in a mega series on my veranda.
Rocks are all through my garden and kids LOVE them. My Dad loved rocks. He wasn't happy until each property he lived on looked like stonehenge. And here.... Andy worked on placing big rocks to mark the driveway, entrance, gardens etc.
I have been trying to think of free decor for the deck area. This wagon wheel has been in the shed waiting for a job.
Sidney likes comparing his height to objects! He got stuck in and the boys rolled the wheel up the ramp.
When I get a bit further I will show some photos of how things are looking.
In the house (and cool) my trusty farm came out. We filled the troughs with real water. 😊
Sparkie is going to have a whole lot of free time on her hands (paws) now that she won't be stuck to Sidney ALL THE TIME.
Yesterday was both my youngest daughters birthday and Andy's second anniversary. A wonderful friend left me flowers on the front table.
I divide the day in half. Lucy's birthday is in the morning. She was born at 9 15 am. Andy's anniversary is in the afternoon, he died at about 3 pm. I think I did well. Having Sidney here probably helped. I am never sure how I am doing. Yesterday I thought I shouldn't have been so tired. Then I realised I was sick all the week before and now was go go go with Sidney... and our family has so many birthdays this time of the year, and Andy's anniversary. I still functioned through the day and made a great dinner and so on. So I think that is ok. But truly I often wonder if I am doing well or badly. I need a lot of alone time. And I can't handle a lot of noise. In fact I've only had the TV on once since Andy died. I don't see myself ever turning it on again. In order to do the things I think are important I have to say not to a lot of other things.
As I drove home this afternoon I was thinking ok, I'm tired and I can't wait to call it a day! Then I remembered! A friend offered me twelve litres of cream! Can you believe that? Obviously I said yes! So I stopped by her house and it is now on ice until I get to it.
Tomorrow is meant to be really hot. Plus more heat into next week. I am hoping no fires. Tomorrow I plan a good rest. And it you would pray because next week is baby week! I will be doing some serious batch cooking.... and also replenishing my own supply of ready meals as it is surprising how fast you can go through them when not well. This is why we make hay while the sun shines!
Now I am way behind on news but I do see a big storm hitting some of our USA sisters. I hope you all have your plans in place and will be safe.
This week I have been thinking a lot on investments. Where we invest our time, energy, thoughts, work, money .... all amount to huge things when they add up week after week. On the flip side rotten investments amount to digging a hole (or a pit if you stick to them long enough.) If we play stupid games we win stupid prizes. Being diligent and prudent and sound boring to some. But you don't look so silly in the end! I watch a you tube channel called Alaska Prepper sometimes. His whole working life come pay day he would buy a silver coin if he possibly could. Well... holy smokes now he is sitting on a great wealth from that small habit. Very smart. Many people smoke or gamble more than the cost of a silver coin a week. Investments! Be shrewd!
But the biggest investment is in the eternal. If you are still here then God has stuff for you to do! Do it in a mighty way with great love!xxx
I'm so sorry for your loss of Andy, Annabel. Grieving is so hard...somedays we think we got it under control and then it hits like a ton of bricks. It's a roller coaster for sure.
ReplyDeleteIt was nice to see your summer pictures of your grandson ..it's very cold here now and that helps.
I also was under the weather last week...glad we are both on the mend. Have a great week.
Dear Vickie, Thank you! I think everyone was under the weather last week! It dragged on and on! I hope you are both good now. Love Annabel.xxx
DeleteCongratulations for Sidney - great work !
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday for Lucy!
Prayers for safe arrival of the new Baby!
Dear Annabel, it is normal to feel tired, taking everything in consideration. Rest a bit, and then off you go, as always. I love how yoy have split the anniversary day in two parts - the only sound way for the soul to allow him to feel all those mixed feelings.
We have a long cold winter here, the hardest in the last 20 years - only yesterday we had the first above zero temperatures this year. 2 grade Celsius/ 35,6 Fhrenheit during the day, but at night time we still reach - 19 C/ -2,2 F. Everything is stone frozen. I managed to fall in the snow while hanging the bed linen outside (I like the crispy smell afterwards) and injured my left eyelids and under the eye, but Thank God the eye is allright. Accidents happen in the blink of an eye (not pun intended).
Because of all the bad things happening as we speak, I can not pray and hope enough for peace, for common sense, and for good days. I found a quote of Maya Angelou which I read often these times, maybe you would like it, too .
*Let the gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer. And let faith be the bridge you build to overcome evil and welcome good.*
Many good wishes from far away,
Laura_s_world from Romania
Dear Laura, Oh I cant even imagine how cold it is! I dont know how chickens stay alive even!
DeleteI am sorry about your eye! Goodness you dont need that. Im pretty sure I would fall and slip in ice and snow and be a disaster.
Yes the tension is high and nesting and praying is the thing to do. I hope you have a good week ahead! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteHugs from across the world for you!!!!!!!!! You are always in my prayers, and I'm also praying for a safe and healthy delivery for Chloe, no complications, and a beautiful little baby. I hope you had a wonderful night's sleep after such a day of extremes, and that you are strengthened and upheld by the arms of our Saviour each and every day.
We are certainly on the same wavelength, as I am also currently thinking a lot about investments. And actually, turning off the noise (of all kinds) really helps not only thought, but action and rest. I'm no hermit, but I sure need my alone time, too! Having quiet and time by myself gives me the time and clarity to really talk to God and listen to what He's saying, as well as to plan and then get busy on whatever it is that is the next (right) thing to do!!!
I'm certainly praying for relief from bushfires for all over your country, but especially in your neck of the woods. And I'm excited for you with all that cream!!!
Love and blessings from Nova Scotia,
Jen.xx
Dear Jen, Thank you. I really appreciate the prayers. I wonder... if TV blasting and constant noise... leads to complete distraction from reality... and no plans or direction, goals or listening to God. It seems this way to me. My brain is overwhelmed and tends to chase squirrels lol so I need to slow it all down!
DeleteWe have so extreme heat coming this week and the baby! All prayers are very welcome. With much love Annabel.xxx
Hi, Annabel! I'm a faithful reader, but I don't often comment. Quick question: What variety of pears do you grow? I think we have a similar climate, and I would LOVE to grow pears.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week. Praying Chloe's delivery is smooth. How exciting to welcome a new grand baby!
Blessings to you and yours,
Roberta in SoCal
Dear Roberta, I agree our climate is quite similar. Ive been to S Cal as well... These trees are about thirty years old I think. I will post close up photos there are two types. But I dont know the names as I just nursed these old trees back to life. I was told they never fruit. But I get tons of them.
DeleteI think it will still be a couple of weeks at least before Im picking them... it is really hard to tell. Im keeping the water up to them and hoping they make it to a good size! With love Annabel.xxx
Thanks, Annabel! I love how you nurse plants and creatures back to health and productivity.
DeleteI'll have to do some research regarding what pears are available in our area and give one a try (well, have Hubs give it a try since he's the gardener in the family). At least I know that we should be able to grow some variety in our climate.
Blessings (and prayers for Chloe and the delivery of the new little one),
Roberta in SoCal
Hello Annabel
ReplyDeleteIt's so lovely to see Sidney helping you with projects and the bond he has with Sparkie. Your verandah is shaping up so nicely, I look forward to seeing more as you go along.
You seem to have navigated some difficult times with grace. Lucy's birthday was lovely but the anniversary of losing Andy and being ill must have knocked you. I'm sure self doubt is very normal. I haven't been through your particular circumstances but now we're involved regularly supporting our granddaughter I have had to cut some other things from life. I just don't have the energy for it all and it's definitely family first. I read something this week that said if you want to be content and happy, do less.
My batch cook this week was cauliflower cheese and a sausage tray bake. I made a bits and bobs soup from leftovers and a couple of frozen portions of veg curry.
I took more things to fabric recycling and the charity shop.
We have been doing some clearing and splitting plants in the garden. I have cleared another noticeboard and several old files of paperwork. I sorted out a couple of old towels to be dog towels. My husband made a start clearing 'stuff' from the conservatory, there is so much decluttering still to do but every little is a step forward.
I hope you will feel completely well again soon Annabel.
Best wishes to all Bluebirds.
Penny in the UK
Thanks Penny. I think that your support of your Grand daughter must make such a difference in their lives.... (as in her and her family) and that absolutely these things mean some things have to go. Priorities involve some serious choices sometimes. Ive struggled sometimes to keep up with or order my priorities. Weirdly being sick clarified some things for me!
DeleteEven though it's so hot here the thought of cauliflower cheese and sausages is so appealing! Yum!
Well done on all the decluttering steps. I love that old towels and things become dog bedding... this is the same here.
I am feeling way better and having a few quiet days due to the heat and Chloe has gone to Adelaide now... it's 45 outside!
Have a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Hello Annabel
ReplyDeleteI am having trouble publishing my comments to you, I'm going to try again and hope there won't be a duplication.
It's lovely to see Sidney helping you with projects and forming such a great bond with Sparkie.
I'm sorry things have been tough because of being ill and the anniversary of Andy's death, you seem to be navigating things with grace and I'm sure self doubt is very normal. The last one went through... so I replied there! Thank you for making sure your comment worked!xxx
DeleteLove reading your Friday newsletters of encouragement!..........Nancy
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Nancy, have a great new week! xxx
Delete(hugs) Annabel! You certainly accomplished quite a bit and what a blessing to have such a diligent worker such as Sidney! What a cutie Sparkle is, too :) How awesome to get an abundance of cream. I know you will put it to good use!
ReplyDeleteWe are ready here for whatever the weather throws at us. I hope you stay cool with your high temps!
Dear Jenn, The weather seems to be a central issue wherever we live at the moment! It is 45 here today and just nasty. Ive been laying very low! Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteGood morning Annabel,
ReplyDeleteI love waking up on a Saturday morning and the first thing I do is sit down with a cup of tea and read your blog! Your produce looks amazing. So vibrant and healthy. I think from what I see around me that it has been an abundant year for produce, we need to be stewarding it well. I love seeing your grandkids helping on the farm, it builds good charcter. It sounds like you have had a rough couple of weeks with illness and anniversary, I'm glad you have planned to rest today.
I often marvel at how you get so much done Annabel, and there was the answer "In order to do the things I think are important, I have to say no to a lot of other things" Good stewarship of our time is the key, and I think on varying levels we all know that, but it's always good to be reminded and led by example.
I've been dabbling a bit more in creating youtube content, and I got to thinking in time I could have a playlist called "Make hay while the sun shines" about all the things that can be done to get ahead! Maybe I sould call it Annabel's Antics haha
I look forward to seeing what you make with your cream, and I have said a prayer for the safe arrival of your next grandchild. May mum and bub be well.
Love Cheryl
Thank you Cheryl! Yes... good point... not every year is great for produce. My season has just come to an abrupt end (except I think for cucumbers, pears and basil) because it's 45 and windy. Not too much will make it... but I already did well and have tried to make the most of everything. And I know you have been doing that too.
DeleteIt really has been a revelation to me how many things demand our time/attention and how we have to choose because there are 24 hours and thats it! Today I cancelled my Foxtel... which is the only way to have tv here .... and the man asked me what was my reason. I said well I havent turned the TV on in two years. So it's a waste. He gasped in horror lol. For a lot of people TV takes up 20 or more hours a week. This is just one example anyway for me. You are creating on you tube? Can you message me how to find you! (Please) Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Wow, what a way to end your post: “If you are still here then God has stuff for you to do! Do it in a mighty way with great love.” I copied it and am putting it on my desk!
ReplyDeleteI too wonder how I am doing, it is just over three years since my husband Stu passed, some ups and some downs, but I really like how your quote asks us to focus outside ourselves. Hilogene in Az.
Dear Hilogene, Thank you so much! For me it is two years and for you three years. But we have lots to do and it's important work. There are for sure ups and downs. I hope you have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteCatholics believe that Jesus died at 3pm.
ReplyDeleteYou are doing great! God and Andy are proud of you. You are not disappointing either of them.
Aimee yes the Bible tells us 3 pm was the hour. I very often remember 3 pm. Thank you for your most kind words! Have a lovely week ahead! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteHello Annabel (and everyone),
ReplyDeletePrayers for Chloe, baby-on-the-way, and you. A new life is a wonderful blessing.
Annabel, you are doing so well, truly. Every day you look toward what you can do for your farm and animals, your family and friends, and others. You keep putting one foot in front of the other, even when it is most difficult. And you bring beauty, grace, and goodness where you can.
You're not alone. I have some of those feelings and thoughts. Reducing the "noise" does seem to help!
<3
Kathy
Dear Kathy, Thank you. You have gone ahead with grace and style, helping your Dad and making your new life as nice as possible. With great success too. Yes "too much" is overwhelming... gardens are good! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel...A new baby...Oh gracious that will be another birthday added to your lot for this time of year! We have three major grouping. February, June, and November. There are other birthdays in other months, but we have many in each of the three months mentioned. So next month we hit the ground running with six birthdays.
ReplyDeleteI got over my last cold; our temperatures went up and then down (we had SNOW! which is remarkable for us in southwest Georgia) and then up again and my cold has come back with a vengeance which doesn't make me happy at all.
Fortunately, I've plenty of ready-made items in the freezer that I put aside when a recipe proved too large or we had more leftovers than I'd planned for which is a help. Chicken soup is on the back burner of the stove just now and I had only to pull it from the freezer and put it in my pot.
Many hugs to you. Many prayers and thoughts too.
Dear Terri, I think birthdays do seem to come in groups in families! You sound like me...I feel I get better than have a relapse. I hope you are completely better now.
DeleteGetting ahead meal by meal ... sometimes just stretching a meal means a couple of servings for the freezer. This is really good. Chicken soup is the best thing of all I think for getting well! Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, what a huge time you have had, very emotional. Andy's anniversary, the birthdays, the bush fire risk, the heat, school holidays, it all adds up and then on top of that being sick! You must have felt exhausted. I am glad you had Sidney with you for the birthday/Andy's anniversary. Thank you for writing about it all, the sadness, joy, the grief, the love. Very few talk about it. I'll be praying for Chloe and for the whole family as you head into baby week. Lots of love and prayers- Bridget
ReplyDeleteDear Bridge,
DeleteYou are very understanding. And thank you for your prayers for Chloe and us all... I will report tonight all that happened.
I hope your week has been good... school may have gone back... Im not sure as the dates differ I know. With much love Annabel.xxx
Hi Annabelle, I’m in the US and we are under a good foot of snow…but you taught me so much over the past few years that we are well prepared and enjoying it. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThank you for telling me this! I am so glad you were prepared and ok! Well done!! xxx
DeleteDear Annabel and Bluebirds,
ReplyDeleteIt was a big week of highs and lows, but it's ok to have some grace with ourselves. You're doing better than you think because you're eating well and resting.
There are so many things to be grateful for this week in my part of the world. We had big storms with lots of snow. But we still have power and heat! We're snowed in but happy. There's enough food stock in the fridge and pantry for many more days. With time on my hands, I'm making headway on quilts.
I'm so thankful it's almost grandbaby day for you! I'm praying for you and your family!
Stacy in Virginia
Dear Stacy, I think the storms and snow kept on coming so I hope you continued to be ok! It's been a week of extreme weather.
DeleteThank you for your prayers... I will report tonight... and say more. With much love Annabel.xxx
