Welcome to 2026. The Great Reset.

A new year,  a new calendar and a new planner... a wonderful chance for a complete reset.

Mine began last year but I started out with a survival mode mindset and wanted to conquer a lot of big things.  This year I want to turn my attention more onto myself and my home.  If ever we needed a calming and organised home it is now.  Being happy and content at home is a just beautiful thing.  I really know that my surroundings affect me a lot.  Walking into a beautiful and comfortable room is glorious!  On the flip side a cluttered disaster makes me anxious.  Seriously, this is the last thing I want...  hence I need a reset!

Sometimes we only see what our home looks like when we return from being away and see it with fresh eyes.  And sometimes we are just used to things the way they are and don't realise we have choices.  It took hearing how Stephanie turned a whole bedroom into a walk in pantry and wishing I could do the same to eventually make me realise that I had a whole room (that used to be Andys office) that I could use any way I want.  I just had not even considered it.  Then it dawned on me... oh!  I have a potential whole room pantry.

Several of my friends lost their husbands in 2025.  Many of us have to make changes for all sorts of reasons....  much of the time we don't realise change is even possible... like me with the office.  But I have reached a point now where I think I can have any colours, any style, any use for any room... there are no rules.  I can have any routine, any schedule... and plan my time however I want.   All this freedom can be daunting.

It is almost two years since Andy died.  At first life was a day by day proposition.  I have shared before some of how I got through that time.  And then how I set about 2025 with a list of things that needed to be done.  Now I am ready for a major reset.  After being off my leg for several months I need to get that strong again and get my fitness back.  And I need to go room by room,  cupboard by cupboard and draw by drawer and clean out, organise, donate, give away everything I no longer need or love.

Now... I am a prepper.  That will never change.  I can rescue any family member at a moments notice with a generator, fuel, extension cords and jerry cans through to first aid and a months worth of food at a moments notice.  If necessary I could do that for several families at once.  I put it as a highest priority to be as self sufficient as I can and in a position to help my family and others in a crisis.  (If you haven't taken my 30 Days to Better Preparedness course that is in the index.)   I will always continue to build and update these areas.   So for this challenge I will be doing things like taking an inventory,  organising my big freezer,  adding to my pantry room etc.

But the rest of the house well...  no one needs all the random odds and sods that somehow build up.  An empty space is much nicer than decor you don't like much, furniture that just sits there, ornaments that collect dust and stuff you just don't know quite what to do with.

I do best in calm spaces that I think are beautiful.  I hate dusting, so there's that.  I just feel like every surface in the whole house needs every single thing removed so that I only put back a quarter of it.

To keep me accountable I will share in my Friday posts my reset work for the week as well as my health and fitness efforts.  At the moment I can have a whole day without my leg hurting if I don't over do it.  I can walk down to the orchard to turn on the irrigation.  But... if I was really busy all day or I walked up a hill or something my leg would ache a lot at night. I just want to build up to being "normal" haha.

Mostly we all know what we need to be doing.  But it can be daunting to begin.  If you would like to join me we can share our progress week by week.  Truly no matter how big the task is it really ins't too bad when we do a little each day.  We just have to get the ball rolling.

On my immediate radar.... I am getting rid of a large unused desk and several smaller bits of furniture.  A

The goal.. is to have a simplified and beautiful home with a working sewing room that I make lots in!  Setting up our spaces for success is important.  For our own health and happiness we want to have at least some spaces we can work on our projects or read or have quiet time.

I want to have a beautiful outdoor eating area and front an back porch.

And to be back to my active self plus fitter.

So that is the plan.  A reset.  I've started and am gaining momentum!

What would you like to aim for this year?  Truly if we don't set goals we don't achieve them.  The goals I did set and achieve last year - like joining a church family, attending Mass, doing more for the community... I will be building on those too.  These all were huge for me.  Huge in my healing and progress.  I am so very glad I took the time to think things over,  make that plan and take those first steps.     I KNEW one thing for sure, even when I didn't know much, and that was God had a plan and mission for me and I had to embrace that.

Now we have the opportunity to reset again, look at the course we are on and maybe steer the ship a little right or left.  But we can do that as small decisions and changes can become enormous over the next 3365 days!

I THINK I still have a post coming about managing the pressures we are under re food, electricity and basically everything.  This year was daunting especially for families feeding growing children.  This all goes in under the "we were born for such a time as this" banner.  All the things we have learned,  all our skills and determination are going to be important.  Patsy coined the phrase about having eyes to see opportunity.  To look at things in different ways.  So we will work on these things too.

Chloe gave me this bracelet for Christmas.

The verse is "The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you,  the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace."

That is my prayer for you for 2026.xxx

  3. Dear Annabel,

Beautiful post, Annabel. I am right with you. I've just had my new planner out and busy setting it up, and am still mulling over my plans and goals for this year. I just heard Dr. David Jeremiah on the radio this morning quote "Your dreams must be bigger than your memories," and that really resonated with me, especially as I can get lost in nostalgia and then lose oomph to move on and get much accomplished. Your goals are much like what I've been chewing on; my "parlour" reno that I started on last February is still in progress, though yesterday my hubby got the curtain rods up and I hung the curtains to get the effect (still have to take them down again to iron them), and I am going to love this room. The big elephant is all the junk (well, and good craft supplies, too) that is sitting in the middle of the room and needs a cupboard in which to be stored, so that's on my immediate list to bring in. I have already pared down the craft supplies, so I'm only keeping what I know I will use (which is still lots). I am ready to make our house beautiful and BREATHABLE this year!!! Right now I am nursing a cold, which is inevitable at the holidays, it seems. But I am taking a nap this afternoon so I can ring in 2026 tonight...It's going to be a great year! I am so glad to hear that your leg is feeling better enough to allow you to do SOME things, but I know you are looking forward to having it 100% so it will serve you and you don't even have to give it a thought! I love the bracelet, and am looking forward to this series this coming year.

Happy New Year to you and all your family! Lots of love from Nova Scotia! xx Jen.

  4. Happy New Year, Annabel!
My goals are clearing out things we no longer need, to eat foods that are good for my body, and to move more!

  5. Thank you for that lovely prayer Annabel 🙏

I struggle to set goals that take a long time to reach. I need to work in smaller manageable bites. My first goal is to have a “no-spend” January. My big picture goals are early retirement so my manageable bites are going to be financial goals.

My second goal is to improve my health, so I’m with you on that! I have just hit proper menopause and my weight is ballooning! My diet is the same, my activity level is the same but my weight is most definitely not, I feel uncomfortable so that needs to change! I have ideas on what to do to improve.

Finally we (husband and I) have many unfinished projects, mostly car restoration and a wardrobe I’ve been slowly restoring. There’s a motto in the car channels that my husband watches something like “Give it some thirties” as in Thirty minutes a day, there’s even a car Facebook group where people post the progress they made in their thirty minutes. We like this idea… small and often…so we are both going to try to do regular 30 minute bursts on our projects. Time will tell 😉

As always I look forward to your wisdom and encouragement Annabel, let’s get going 🪺

  6. We think the same way. My goal, really a prayer, is that 2026 will be gentle and calm. I've changed my whole mind/attitude/thinking to creating calm and gentle in our home, for Wayne and the kids, and pushed it over to Cheapskates too. Doesn't mean I won't be tackling the pantry building or whatever, just removing that "panic" the whole world seems to have. We know Jesus is coming soon, I want my focus to be on Him and being ready because it will be a surprise, the Bible tells us that. So less focus on panic preparing and more on Godly preparing for now and the time before His return. My favourite Proverb and Bible verse is Proverbs 16:3 - "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans." So 2026 is going to be gentle and calm preparing for me.

  7. Happy New Year Annabel and Bluebird friends
What a lovely bracelet and verse to have received.
I am absolutely with you on the decluttering, clearing , simplifying. I want the people in the hospice charity shop and recycling centre/ tip to become very familiar with my face! So I will post progress too.
My mantra for 2026 is" Think smarter". This will impact on so many areas of life. I particularly want to think smarter about finances, home and garden maintenance and feeding us. Hard work is good for us physically and mentally but we also need to rest and enjoy the fruits of our labours.
I have a list of projects large and small as long as your arm, which I won't bore you all with but we can share our progress through the year.
I applaud your determination Annabel to get your leg back to full strength, more power to you!
I am excited for 2026 and look forward to a year with Bluebirds.

  8. We are also removing many things from our home. We are not sure whether to remain here or to move into a lifestyle community closer to our children. Either way there is much in our home that we will probably not use again. I am unlikely to have dinner parties where I serve soup from a tureen again. I am also working on regaining fitness. In a lovely start to the year my daughter and I both found rings that had been missing for quite a while and I made a dress for my eldest granddaughter with Liberty fabric I purchased over 30 years ago for my daughter! I’m feeling positive.

  9. I love that verse Annabel, peace is what we all need. You are rolling right along and I'm glad you are on the mend.
My goals are to work hard to make life easier in the long run. It will take work at first but the benefits are great!

  11. Dear Annabel,

Happy New Year. It is so interesting to me that you are planning to go through your home in this way - I actually started this yesterday by starting to go through bookcases. I've yet to set goals, but I have felt the urge to pare things down and get my house in better order (it is clean, but so much "stuff"), perhaps turning my home office into another guest bedroom. Wishing you peace and goodness in 2026.

  13. Happy New Year Dear Annabel and Lovely Bluebirds,
this post was an echo of what has been buzzing in my head since boxing day.
I also read and interesting article about Osoji from Japan apparently they scrub , clean and declutter before the New Year to start afresh. well LOL I missed that but just today I thought better late than never so today in my new diary I have written in to do 30mins extra a day in the garden (also known as Weed City at the moment) and 30mins Osoji for all the month of January and February, and also this year will be health and fitness for my daughter and i encouraging each other fingers crossed.
your bracelet is lovely and the verses here and in the comments all wonderful.
thankyou again for all inspiring me, Cheers Bevo xx

  14. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and insight.
I'm armed with a new planner and I am contemplating my strategy for the new year. I appreciate all that is shared here. I have experienced so much personal growth since my first visit 10 years ago.

I'm currently challenging myself to shop only my pantry and freezer. I do have to buy eggs and milk. But most foods I have in storage.

    Love, Leslie in Ohio

  15. Happy New Year! I popped over from A Tray of Bliss when I saw your linked blog. You are so right about being away and really looking when you return. I'm guilty of not re-feathering our nest after moving, so my reset will be personal and environmental. Like you another declutter; there's so much kitchen stuff we never use - but also lovely decorator stuff I just haven't revisited since putting them in cupboards. No wonder the house feels bare... I appreciate your message and enthusiasm so much!

  16. Happy New Year Annabel! What a beautiful bracelet and the inscription is one of my favourite scriptures. I have not really decided fully what I am aiming for this year. Though one of my goals is to read the Bible through this year using a reading plan. It has been a while since I have done that. I read my Bible a lot but usually deep dive over a portion of scripture over a few days and then move onto whatever portion of scripture is highlighted next for me and deep dive into that and so on. My verse for this year is Philippians 4:6.

I am glad you found a church family last year. Like you I started doing more in the community during 2025, including volunteering at a local food bank.

I am looking forward to following your journey through 2026. God bless you and keep you.
