It was a beautiful day. I didn't even have to drive as my brother picked Mum up and then came on to my place and picked me up. So nice!
Lucy made a gorgeous pavlova plus we had Mum's plum pudding.
We had such a nice time. The kids were all so excited and happy.
Guess what my brother gave me for Christmas? About 5 kilos of steak!
It's huge! I need to get to this and slice it and freeze portions. It is going to last me a long time, a great gift!
We also had a Christmas lunch at my place last Sunday with Chloe's family.
For the kids we called it a Christmas party an they could open their presents from us so we could enjoy seeing their reactions.
Tom and I had a secret plan. He was going to say Grace for the whole family. He was very excited and thought Nana Pat would be heaps impressed.
When it came to be time for the meal and everyone was seated he paused.... and I thought the moment overwhelmed him. There was like a pregnant pause and then off he went! It went something like "Thank you God for beautiful family and beautiful food and for everything being beautiful. Amen." He nailed it!
I gave Lily a baby so that she has her own baby when Mummy has hers! She loved it and is getting the hang of Motherhood. 😊
Chase asked very specifically for a "tele handler" and thats what he got!
And Tom... you know him well enough to know a garden trailer is a good idea.
They all got Pjs and t shirts and extras.
So we got to enjoy two special days. We were very lucky.
Besides Christmas I have produce coming in...
And I ran out of egg cartons so I have eggs in small boxes, everywhere!
Christmas wouldn't be complete without saving all the gift bags and ribbon!
😊
It has been a big year. Because I am thinking it over so much I am writing a post about reviewing our year and why that is a good thing. We need a little space just to breathe and consider. I made a lot of changes too. It takes a pause sometimes to realise that changes are even possible! Last New Year I set some goals that I felt were important and at the time I had no idea how I would achieve them... but God helps. One of them was to be more involved in my local community and church. Soon after I had a moment when it hit me what I could do! And so this year I achieved this!
Another thing was... I realised I needed to find easier ways of getting things done. I ended up off my leg for three months with an injury and wow I fast realised how quickly things could go pear shaped. All of us are in different circumstances but a deep think about how we use our time and ways to make life easier is worthwhile. I am going to share my list and see if you all can add some more.
Then finally I want to write up a plan for 2026. Some things worked and some things need work! We all kind of knew prices were going up this year and yep... that happened. But it hasn't stopped! It hasn't even slowed down. All our thrifty ways are out in full force. We are like ducks... if we look calm on the surface it is because we are paddling flat out where no one can see. Now our Nanas thrifty ways are our inspiration.
At this time last year I thought the world had gone mad. Now this year I realise it was only warming up.
Since going back to Church shortly after Andy died... which is almost two years now, I feel more "built up." That is a hard concept to describe. But often after Church I feel it... and feel ready to face another week in a revived and energised way.
When I was around 14 I was confirmed. We each chose a Saint who was our special hero/inspiration. I chose Joan of Arc. All these years later I am amazed how she was my choice as her words "I am not afraid, I was born to do this" are just how I feel about the battle we are in.
Through this year it became pretty clear to me we are in a spiritual battle. I experienced head on attacks for believing the Word of God. I had readers write to me and give me what for and saying they were leaving because I quoted a man I admired. All this did was to strengthen my resolve. It doesn't matter if your mission field is in Uganda or your home and local community... "I am not afraid, I was born to do this" are encouraging words.
Whatever is happening, don't be discouraged. Make a plan. A new year is coming. We can turn a new page, which is very exciting!
"Do not get tired of doing good" but do have a time of thankfulness and appreciation and a rest.xxx
Merry Christmas Annabel and family 🎄 I absolutely love the week between Christmas and New Year as well! It’s the ultimate reset in my books. Sometimes I try and channel the feeling I feel in this week at other times of the year just to give myself a pep up 😊
ReplyDeleteLucy’s table looked beautiful. What were the little gifts on the plate?
Your brother knows you well! Steak! I’d be ecstatic about that too!
I really look forward to your year in review post and your list of how to streamline work etc, pretty sure that will be very inspiring 🙏
One of my goals this year is to have a “Savings Log” so in a nutshell I want to calculate the savings every time I make something from scratch that I would usually buy, bread would be an example…I make it for $1, compared to my preferred bread brand at coles this would be a saving of about $4…but I want to take it even further and transfer that $4 into a savings account, once a month the total will be put into an investment fund. Our goal is to retire by 60…hopefully sooner, so we need to hustle and this is one way I think we can achieve that. I hope I can stick to it. I have a habit of setting lofty goals and they wane after a short time 🙄
I’ve been “hearing” the word ‘pivot’ a lot the past couple of weeks so I’m thinking that is my 2026 word. I’m trying to remember if this was your word at one time?? It seems very familiar.
Anyway, 2026…let’s do it!
From Cheryl
Dear Cheryl, Thank you! One the plates were a fancy bon bon... just a little different. The savings log is very like what we used to do called The Vicky Challenge. I tracked all the savings for a couple of years. Cheryl when you do you will get the hugest shock... some things are astonishing. ie... one time I made a big batch of sausage rolls... I checked the prices at the bakery... I think that one thing was over $100 savings. It added up to an income anyway. And it's fun and motivating!
DeletePivot... ! mmm very interesting. No, I havent used it but I think it's very interesting that this should be coming to you. I am going to mull this over! Have a very Happy New Year! With love Annabel.xxx
I’m reflecting on what worked and what didn’t for your Christmas this year. I’ve taken some notes as well and will pull them out next year to review. I look forward to your plan for 2026 and will be taking notes. I also plan to participate more in your Tuesday Afternoon group.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Belinda! I'll be very happy having you working along in the Tuesday group! We achieve a lot! It is amazing how it adds up over a year! xxx
DeleteI'm sorry readers feel entitled to attack you for your beliefs. It's not like your threatening us with a machine gun to live your way.
ReplyDeleteMay peace be with you as you look to the future... "you were born to do this". :-)
Thank you Elle! Happy New year to you!xxx
DeleteI look forward to seeing your plan....if you feel led to share. While your Friday posts are wonderful and very encouraging....your other writings are profound. I look back to them frequently and have copied many into notebooks.
ReplyDeleteI'm feeling like we need to prepare, toughen up ..and pray up. It's hard not to fall into the trap if thinking that times were better...but be reminded "we were born for a time such as this ". Happy New Year
Dear Stacy, Thank you! I feel as you do. In fact it keeps coming to me about putting on the whole armour... and yes, we were born for such a time as this. I feel something historic may be coming... so something big. But this doesn't worry me it more motivates me! Happy New Year! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteEven after 20+ years of blogging and reading blogs, it never ceases to amaze me when people tell you off for writing what you think about topics... on your own blog.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Sallie thank you. That is funny if you think about it. This is what I think... darkness cannot stand light! Oh boy! Well I am not discouraged I am looking forward to a new year, With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteMerry Christmas Annabel! I am always so encouraged by how you live your life. I agree with your words here at the end! God has placed us in this time in history and will give us strength to do what he has for us to do!
ReplyDeleteDear Deanna, I think we are living in a very historic and Biblical time. Which is a privilege really, to see what we will. I am thinking of "putting on the whole armour" verse. Have a very Happy New Year! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI so appreciate your words this morning.
ReplyDelete2025 was a very hard year for our family especially the last 4 months. And yet this morning I have hope. Hope in the Lord. We have so many blessings!
Merry Christmas!
Dear Margaret, I am so sorry 2025 was so tough for your family. I really hope 2026 will be an easier year. Hang on to hope and Gods plan for you going forward. With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteYou are such a blessing, my friend. Your spiritual walk is life. Anyone offended by that, should sincerely examine their eternity. I love the quote by Joan of arc.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Glenda
Dear Glenda, Thank you! It has been an adventure these last few years. That would be an understatement! Many blessings for 2026, with love Annabel.xxx
DeleteThat little Tom is so adorable in those suspenders, he ought to be on the cover of a magazine.
ReplyDeleteThank you Anne! Tom insists on wearing these daily and he wears a hat and sunglasses. He is set on it. I love it and he sure has character! Happy New Year! xxx
DeleteYour Christmas looked beautiful, Tom saying Grace must have been very special.
ReplyDeleteI also love the quiet days between Christmas and New Year and it is my intention to extend this well into January. I feel the need to rest and reset for a while.
We received a lovely piece of beef too as a thank you from someone and it's now in the freezer.
We are all together celebrating today and tomorrow ( 27th and 28th) as our daughters both worked over Christmas ( nurse and vet) so we are having a lovely extended Christmas.
Joan of Arc was a very suitable saint for you to choose!
Thank you for all your encouragement over the year.
Penny in the UK
Dear Penny, You had a good plan for Christmas. I hope it all was beautiful. You had a big and busy and very productive year. So nice to get some beef too! I hope you get some lovely rest and quiet days! Happy New Year! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel and Bluebirds,
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you all!
What a lovely table Lucy set. And her pavlova is magazine ready. Looks like you all had a wonderful time. Such a thrill to see the children's faces at the sight of their gifts!
I want to be better prepared for gift giving this year as well. I'm so sorry for your leg injury, Annabel. I had no idea it set you back so much. Now that I am in my mid 50s I am running a bit slower.🥴 I had to adjust to being a taxi service the last 2 years. I had to remind myself that this was also part of motherhood. Jessica of Three Rivers Homestead recently addressed this as well. I am very thankful for the opportunities my younger children have (jobs and participating in sports) that my older children did not. God is good!
Looking forward to a new year to encourage and be encouraged in this space!
Love,
Leslie in Ohio, USA
Dear Leslie, I had the driving around years and it was exhausting as it was often at night too. But yes it is great if kids have jobs and sports and are involved in good things. Have a very Happy New Year! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteMy son gifted me 22 pounds of lovely ground venison. The deer graze here on my land so we get the pleasure of watching them as well as knowing that they are helping to feed us.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Terri! What a wonderful gift! I know you will make the most of it all! It is very good and healthy meat. I get some sometimes here and it's such an asset! xxx
DeleteDear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteYour Christmas was all Beautiful. like Tom said, I liked all the pictures but the kids are wonderful !!!
I am back to work already for Monday and Tuesday and then at home until next year. I like this period, time has another rithm. Our Christmas was very nice, I feel like my batteries were recharged, I had many little moments that made me happy, and even a bit of snow. Although with hig winds and freezing temperatures.
As I promised I am writting about food on our Romanian Christmas table, with the mention that we prepared/cooked just what we eat, what we and our guests like, we did not follow trends, we did not waste anything, we did buy in advance most of the holiday needs, bit by bit along the months, even the presents, so December is not such a big ugly expense - we even covered part of the high bills for heating and electricity.
The traditional Christmas meal in Romania is rich and complex, including pork dishes:
- Smoked sausages,
- caltaboşi, (pudding sausage - pork organs with rice),
- tobă, (pig*s head cheese)
- piftie (pig*s trotters in a jelly, with garlic and served with lemon juice),
- sarmale (stuffed cabbage); they are typically stuffed with rice and minced meat (usually ground beef), served with sour cream. I made mine with sour cabage leaves, tomatoe sauce and basil leaves.
- boeuf salad, a French cuisine A classic dish, with vegetables, boiled meat (chicken/beef) and mayonnaise that my husband is mastering it like a Chef – it is my favourite meal of the holidays,
- Traditional platters: Ham, different cheeses, olives, zacuscă, eggplant or mushroom salad with mayonnaise
- Chicken soup with homemade noodles.
Desserts
- Cozonac: Filled with walnuts, cocoa, raisins, a must-have, symbolizing abundance, tradition.
- Homemade cakes: Diversity of flavours and textures
- Fruits – apples, pears and clementines.
It is not eaten all at one meal (too much) and some of it has a deep Austro-Hungarian Empire traditions (our history in Europe is complicated and my personal family is half hungarian/half ukrainian and am married to a romanian). Ha!
Wishing you all nice days, peace, health and prosperity for the year that comes. Happy New Year! La Multi Ani!
