Easier ways. Helping ourselves to a better life. :)
Laine use to write a series called Easier ways. I loved that series. I set up a baking centre because of her. (If you are not familiar with Laine see my section in her name, once you get going on Laine's Letters you won't be able to stop!)
This year I knew I needed to make some changes and make my life easier. I don't want to become less productive but to avoid this I needed to re think.
Some ideas came quickly and some slowly through the year. These are the ones I can remember. Maybe the key is realising we don't have to do the same things forever, we can change!
1. I got the lawns onto an automatic sprinkler system. My big wide lawn is an important part of my fire prevention. But keeping it watered, dragging around hoses and sprinklers takes hours and many many moves during the day. Actually a huge job. Now... it's automatic. The time saved is many hours a week and it's more efficient... and if I was away from home and I knew there was a fire I can turn them on remotely. Never again will I move sprinklers!
2. I got all my chooks into one hen house. I had hens in several houses in different locations. I decided nope I need only one lot to look after and one lot of eggs to collect. This is saving me about 20 minutes a day.
3. My front garden is now all on a soaker hose set up. I have three soaker hoses and I just turn on one a day and let it properly water. I have bore water so I have no worries there. This is saving me almost an hour a day in the hot weather. Keeping my garden alive in a heatwave used to nearly kill me!
4. I completely gave up vacuums with a cord. I no longer drag a vac around and I never will again. I'm done. In my life I have probably vacced the equivalent of the whole earths surface. I also HATE emptying bags or even the non bag types. I got a shark and it's cordless and it empties itself.
5. I gave up having a car that didn't fit everything and got a ute.
6. I amalgamated all my container garden and pots into one fenced area. This is the only area I hand water. It is the biggest success I've had with lots of produce as it is fenced, protected from wind, tree roots can't get into the soil... slugs and snails don't seem to bother... it is great!
7, All my fruit trees are now on a dripper as well. Oh my gosh the hours I spent in the heat watering fruit trees... no more. Now they are deeply watered and looking wonderful!
8. I changed my odd fridge and freezers into one big streamlined and labelled system. It's fantastic. It was an epic saga to get it all done but worth it.
9. I got rid of the goats. Goats are trouble. They went to a happy home in the family. My life is easier without goats.
10. I found ways to contribute to the community without attending meetings. Meetings are a no for me.
11. I batch cook so I can eat really well and help the family even if I only cook twice a week.
12. All my animals have automatic water troughs.
13. This one is more of a gift... the larger supermarket in town will now deliver out to us once a week. Chloe now uses this service and it is amazing! So this is a possibility for me too. I no longer need to go to town once a week.
I think for the time being all my huge projects like fix up a cottage, fix up a whole house, fix up a shearing shed etc are done. It has been a few years to get to this point but there are no humongous projects I need to tackle. Yay!!
These all add up to so much help, especially in the really hot weather when I found it hardest. The real heat was an exhausting time.
Others are things I've always done ie I keep a long way ahead on supplies... I am not going to run to town for a few things.
I had a rigid routine to clean the bathroom and wash the linen. Now I do these on days that suit me because seriously things stay cleaner longer for one person.
What are some easier ways you have found? Are there any areas that you need to change to make your life easier?
All of these things have been an investment in my life here.
Now I look at it this was a fair bit changed over for '25 and I intend to keep going.
I think best when I write. If you have any make life easier tips please, please share! And if you have any areas that you need to make easier... maybe make a plan! Sometimes one thing leads to another.... ie if you want to sew it might take cleaning out a whole room and getting set up to make it happen. But it is worth it! Now might be the time to get the ball rolling. This reminds me... Stephanie has a whole room pantry and I thought oh, this would be my dream! Then weeks later it occurred to me I have a large room which was Andy's office. Never once did I realise that room didn't need to be an office anymore. It was quite a challenge to empty it and begin a pantry room. It had sat unused almost a year.
Now I have this figured out I can listen to the garden watering itself while I work on the next post... some of my plans for the New Year. I am really grateful for all the good things of 2025 and almost ready to turn the page.xxx

Absolutely wonderful ideas in this post Annabel. I need to ponder my life/home/habits and see what needs streamlining. I suspect I could come up with a lot of things that could be managed better!

This is a small thing, I bought measuring cups and spoons at estate sales and put the size I use most in baking staples so I never need to find one to measure out ingredients for a recipe.

I love little tips like that. Thankyou Clare
DeleteThankyou for this post Annabel. It is very timely. Having just moved and adjusting most of my "systems" - you have given me extra food for thought. Clare
DeleteThank you for this Annabel, I love your bonus posts and they always inspire me. You tackled some large areas which must have made life much easier. It was a very productive year for you.
ReplyDeleteThis year I streamlined various things to make life easier.
Some very small but they made an appreciable difference.
I lost count of the number of times I was out in the car and thought, oh if only I had a pair of scissors, coins, a clean rag, etc. We/I often walk the dogs at the beach and would get back to the car and I'd forgotten their water bowl...or..water...or....towel to rub them down. Instead of putting this in and out of the car I now keep a full dog kit in the car along with more gloves box supplies, it is so much more efficient.
We have streamlined the garden somewhat and have ideas for more to do next year. We need to work smarter not harder as we get older.
A big difference was to step back from a couple of things which were causing me unnecessary stress. One was a 'friend' and one was a community commitment. You are right when you say we are allowed to change things in our lives, things don't always have to be the same, whether that be the use of a room or a social commitment. I wish I had summoned up courage to do this much sooner, I am astonished at the peace of mind this has brought.
On a positive note I have lots of future plans for making life easier! Look forward to hearing your plans and sharing with lovely Bluebirds friends.

When you vacuumed the surface of the earth, it must have blown MY way. I'm vacuuming it too!
ReplyDeleteThis year I cleaned all my kitchen cabinets. I wrote an inventory of what is in those high and backward areas. Helps me remember what is squirreled away. I also did an intense under the sink organization. Both bathrooms, the utility sink and kitchen. Just amazing whats in the very back. I used scrap yarn to make multiple scarfs and gave them to the cancer center. And I'm not to the bottom of the scrap yarn,SO that's ongoing. I'm working on using my scrap pieces of fabric in piecing lap quilts. THIS is taking awhile to make progress, however I think I have the makings of at least four lap quilts in that mound of scraps. I worked most of the year on ways to reduce plastics in our daily life. This coming year I need to tackle the black hole known as the freezer. Also get my mop, broom area organized. Work on the nests of tangled cords by the computer router area. Don't buy anymore books until I've tackled the unread pile. Just to name a few of the challenges. Thank you for inspiring me to Feather the Nest. I look forward to each post.
I too keep 'kits' in the car. One is a blanket, duster, glass cloth, wet wipes, paper towels and a hand held brush and dustpan. It allows me to clean up the car while waiting at appointments when I go with my husband. The other is a small kit in the dash pocket where I keep over the counter pain reliever and allergy meds, bug bite rub, antacid tablets, lip balm, napkins, straws, dental picks, plastic spoons and forks, scissors, a pen, even little packets of salt. Surprising how handy those things are to have on hand.
ReplyDeleteIn my home, I keep cleaning items in each of the two baths and the kitchen, so I don't have to run all over the house to retrieve things. I can just reach under a cabinet and grab my cleaner and get started. I also keep a broom in my master bath as well as in the kitchen. And I have one on each porch. It's not so much about saving steps as it is about having what I need where I need it, which cuts down on my getting distracted on the way to retrieve an item!
I determined that raised bed gardening was going to work best for me, as stooping is difficult on my knees and back. So I have tall buckets and raised planters now.
Brilliant ideas in this post, I need to streamline things with my husband so ill, thank you for this post some great ideas.
ReplyDeleteI found Laine when Lori from The Transformed Wife posted about her passing, which then led me to you. I'm a young mother of three and it's amazing how letters from decades ago can still resonate so deeply with Christian mothers of today like myself. Thank you for continuing her legacy. Love your blog. Blessings and happy new year.
ReplyDeleteFabulous post, Annabel. And as I’m learning time is precious and time is the gift, so I’m definitely looking for ways to make things easier in 2026. Love, Bridget
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post! I have been trying to simplify things since my heart attack 3 years ago. Some of the things I have done include: decluttering (less things to clean), organizing things (so I am not wasting time and energy looking for things when I need them), cooking simple meals from a well stocked pantry, and cooking ahead when I can. We have purchased tools which will help such as a Roomba for vacuuming, dusters with extending poles and a hose reel for easier watering. We have hired a cleaner to come once a month. With our health issues it is worth the reasonable amount the lady charges. In between we use the roomba to vacuum the main areas and my husband and I do the rest. The cleaner does the dusting of the ceiling fans, etc. She also gives the bathroom a deep clean. We use the delivery service for our prescriptions. We also have no debt which simplifies our lives immensely. We use online banking for all except 2 monthly bills, which do not have online payment as an option. We enjoy simple activities like walking in our daily routine. Annabel, this is a great post and has inspired me to look at other ways I can simplify things as I go through my day. Thank you so much for your commitment to this blog. Marley in the Mountains
ReplyDeleteYou are and always have been an inspiration to me Annabell.
ReplyDeleteMy situation changed recently. I lost my husband a little over 4 years ago and then in August I had a mild stroke, fortunately it was a warning and no permanent damage was done, however it prompted me to think that a move to a retirement village would be a good idea, where there are people my own age (78) and the comfort of knowing I (and my little dog) are totally secure and safe, surrounded by friendly and caring people.
The move, although I had help from my family, took its toll on me. I’ve never had to make big financial decisions on my own, my husband and I were a partnership. Now three weeks later I am feeling much more settled, I can actually find things again and life has more meaning. A miracle.
Your latest post was a firm reminder to get my life back into a good routine, to have goals again in order to enjoy my life again.
Thank you so much Annabell, you are the true friend I have never met. You speak so much sense and have a positive outlook which is infectious.
Happy New Year to you and all the Bluebirds.
Happy New Year! Thank you for this post Annabel! I've been thinking about what I could do better in the new year too. I was rereading Laine's letter about "practice" and cleaning rooms in five minutes with some practice! I think I'm going to challenge myself to do this drill and see how much time I can save! I love that it's just a timer and some work put into my home!
ReplyDeleteWishing you all the very best!
