Feather your Nest Friday, 28th November, 2025.
It is pouring with rain. Good soaking, steady rain. This is my idea of a peaceful and lovey Friday night.
I had it in my mind that I wanted to do all I could towards Christmas this month... (I still have two days left!)
Getting the fruit cakes made was first. You can find the recipe here. I made a triple batch... using 15 eggs. Ingredients, even with free eggs, are expensive now. The cakes I give away are a lot smaller than they used to be. But that is ok, this way I got so many!
I soaked my fruit over night in some brandy and some whiskey because that is what I had.
There is no alcohol once a cake is cooked. But it somehow acts as a preservative and means these cakes improve over a few weeks. or months.
I got them all wrapped, using all kinds of ribbons in my stash.
The house smelled really good! I am really pleased as this gives me a lot of gifts!
Next... my cook up for the week was Meatloaf. Mainly I make single serve ones as the kids like them and I can freeze individual portions for myself. There are so many things that single portions tend to be handier and you seem to waste less.
They turned out to be delicious!
I got 28 individual and one large.
This lot went to Chloe's family and I made veggies on the side. Oh, also, I did put quite a lot of grated zucchini into the meatloaves. I began picking zucchini this week!
The hen house has had major improvements and some serious reinforcing. I now have a feed dispenser and can just let it fill my bucket. This is bliss compared to the lifting I've always done. The huge rock is along a side that is sandy and a fox could possibly have dug under. Now it is all compacted rocks with this mammoth one on top for good measure.
Another giant step was my front gardens (which are just succulents and a few flowers) now have a dripper system. I can turn it on, let it all soak and turn it off. This will happen in three sections. No more hours of watering in summer out there. Plus things will do better as truthfully last summer I didn't keep up anyway.
All the things that should be climbing are climbing! I have various supports and trellises and things are heading up! Also there are tiny baby cucumbers!
In 2020 which was a very challenging year (think covid and my Dad died) my goal was to fix up the cabin which is a single mans cottage. We still got it done. I have posted that story before. It became a major asset after being such a dump people suggested I just set fire to it to make it more aesthetically pleasing!
Well, then 2024 I made my goal to renovate what we call "the top house" as its on a hill. Farms were set up this way 50 years ago. An owners home. A managers home. A Jackaroo quarters. Most of these are now empty Australia wide. Many are wrecks at this point or on the edge of being saveable like mine.
The top house was pretty putrid. The carpets alone were the stuff of nightmares. It was another very big project. But I just felt it must be done. It was an asset, or could be. I also believed someone was going to need it and I had to get moving.
Then Andy died. All thoughts of plans stopped. Later last year I began to remember and again felt that this house would be needed. So there was a lot of work inside the house. I had several floors replaced. All the curtains and carpet burned. The kitchen re done. The laundry re done. The shower was like a trap door, if you stood in it then you would fall through the floor. The whole house wasn't level and needed re stumping. There was a hot water system and an air conditioner unit but rabbits had dug under them and they all fell in a huge hole!
It was infested with bees. Wood was rotting. Mice could get in and out. Birds were nesting in the chimney... there was no oven... I could go on and on. The list seemed absolutely endless!
When my Uncle died I inherited a household of very good furniture, beds, fridge, freezer, pretty much everything to set up a home. This all became part of the restoration.
This year I knew THIS IS IT, this must be complete as it would be needed.
And guess what? It was needed. Someone needed a home and asked me. And then there were two weeks to be ready.... and I used the last two hours of that time to make the bed, put out new towels and look like a pretty decent B and B. Then I wondered if it was good enough? But my guests were so happy!
God had truly gone ahead and prepared a place by telling me to get it done. All in the perfect timing.
Finally this week the outside is painted and the house on the hill blends in with the gum tress surrounds.
It is no longer a dump, it is a very decent and comfy three bedroom home. With a view! Beautiful rainwater on tap. Even a little bit of a garden! 😊
It seemed like a far off dream in January last year but now this old dump is a blessing and an asset! I just feel so happy and grateful to have it!
Today Tom came in quiet time (when the little kids nap) and he was in charge of putting up my little Christmas tree. He untangled my lights and gave me instructions to get a decent star for the top and more decorations.... which I will before he comes next week!
We figured how to keep everything away from Sparkie the destroyer and present unwrapper.
Now.. this is a little tree. I don't need a big tree. I don't need bigger or better or more. I am happy. I have a huge wreath on the front door.
My dining room table will be my main display, maybe in a week or so I will get to that.
When I wander around in the evening I love to see the twinkling lights. It fills me with joy and the Christmas feeling.
Many people who live alone think they can't be bothered decorating. Don't miss out on the joy. Don't stop enjoying decent meals, life, celebrations ... you need them MORE not less! It doesn't have to cost anything. Creatively use what you have. Even when someone calls by they are uplifted by your atmosphere.
My friends are going on an overseas trip. They offered to take one of Tom's teddy bears with them and photograph his bear at different landmarks... so he could follow them on the map and see interesting (and educational) things. This sounded a wonderful idea. But Tom said he didn't want any of his bears going overseas and he couldn't possibly sleep without any of them! haha I thought of a very small bear I have and offered that he could go on the trip and report in. This was ok apparently so this bear is allowed to go and we will follow his progress. None of Tom's bears have any hope of ever going on a trip that is for sure.
The rain continues and is doing more good for my garden than anything I could do.
Further good news is Jenny of Elefanz is back! For beautiful stitching, knitting and inspiration I am most happy to read she is blogging again!
Many of you just had Thanksgiving, I hope you had a beautiful day and are living on leftovers!
How did you build up your nest this week, did you find any ways to get ahead or prepared for Christmas? We love to hear as it gives us joy and inspiration!xxx

Annabel you continue to amaze me & all you get done in a week. You are truly inspirational.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I think everyday of the verse Redeem the time. Sometimes we cant but make hay while the sun shines is my other favourite! Have a beautiful new week.xxx
DeleteAnnabel, Another amazing week at your farm.
ReplyDeleteTom is such an amazing helper, it is wonderful seeing him take pride in his work. You and Chloe are bringing him up to be a wonderful man.
The house turned out beautiful!!! you have to feel so good having that project completed.
We haven't accomplished much around the house this week. Monday I saw the surgeon, Tuesday we went for pre-op, Wednesday was all the prep we could do for Thanksgiving dinner. Thursday was Thanksgiving, we sent everyone home with boxes full of leftovers. Today will be soup day making with the leftover bones. I will also be adding more to my hospital bag and I am taking a craft bag with yarn and Christmas cards for me to work on, praying i accomplish some things while I'm in. My plans are to get the house set.
Prayers for all Bluebirds!
Dear Rosanne, I am so glad you got to enjoy Thanksgiving at home before hospital. Soup will be great for when you get home again. It is a very good plan to take cards and pens etc so when you feel up to it you have things to do. Every prayer for your week ahead. With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteWhat a GORGEOUS reno on the top house!!!!! Oh my, girl, you outdid yourself!!! It's simply beautiful painted that lovely green (my favourite colour in green) and looks so serene in the landscape. Must admit I gagged a bit reading of all the critters and holes, but just made me admire your tenacity all the more.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you got more decent rain. Our wet season is yet to arrive, in fact it's almost late, but we are praying for it as everything is scorched and it takes hours every day to water the gardens.
I see your Tom and think how proud you are of him...so young and already a young man.
Hubby just bought 30 metres of long shadecloth to hang along the western side of Blossom's house (they rent and there's not a single tree that side to give shade). Charlie David turns 5 in December and told Poppy he wants to go up on the roof for his birthday present, so hubby will take him up on the ladder to help him hang the shadecloth. I shuddered, Blossom shuddered, but daddy Ross thought it a grand idea! I'm just a girl...and I'll never understand boys. ;-) Ross has big arms to catch, and that's what we girls are grateful for. ;-)
May your week be a wonderful one, my very dear friend. Hugs to Pat.
Love
Jennifer
Dear Jennifer, Yes boys! Going up on the roof is terribly exciting! I love it! I think the shade cloth is a a great idea and hopefully can provide more area the kids can play as well. It should help a lot. What a great thing to do. Also Im sure this will entertain Charlie no end.
DeleteThank you for your kind words! Have a lovely week! With love Annabel.xxx
We’re definitely going to be enjoying leftovers this weekend as I cooked a 14 pound turkey and there are just two of us here. The top house looks lovely and the way you described it sounds so inviting. God, in his perfect timing, knows what we need and we are wise to wait on Him. Just like the rain he is providing for you now. Bless you!
ReplyDeleteBelinda, I just love turkey. I like to freeze a whole series of complete roast dinners. Pies... then soup and stock. So good! I wont get the leftovers time until after Christmas but I really look forward to that!
DeleteThank you so much! It is our first day of summer and it's cold and pouring! With love Annabel.xxx
Always lovely! And I am a huge Tom fan! He’s simply marvelous that one!
ReplyDeleteThank you! This week we are making a lot of Christmas treats to share around and next week also. This will keep us busy! Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteThat was a beautiful uplifting read Annabel , thankyou ! I’m up early with the birds , the sun is shining and my Christmas tree snd decorations are twinkling in the sunlight ahhh…..🌷
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you about the joy of doing the Christmas decorations snd all that goes with this season for oneself as much as for those seeing it .
Yesterday a friend snd her hubby visited fir afternoon tea snd I used my best porcelain china and sweet treats . We both have quieter husbands and we are more social beings . And neither of us have many visit our homes other than family . She has recently finished treatment and can’t be in crowds .
Well they both thoroughly enjoyed the fuss snd much laughter was heard. I’m glad I made the fuss for them .
Your done a fabulous job on the renovation of the old place , in time for new tenants and I’m sure they are thrilled to bits to be living there before Christmas .
Tom is such a wee darling ! I love hearing about him snd I have my own nearly 7 year old one here who has much to tell me hahaha.I’m sure they would hit it off together !
Great idea with the hen house those sneaky foxes your ahead of them ! Your plantings look lush and yay for all that rain much needed your way too .
Wishing you a joyous blessed Christmas snd time to rest after your industrious year , much love , Maria (IK) xxx
Dear Maria, Oh how lovely, the fuss you made to make your friends visit special was well worth it. Good old fashioned hospitality is beautiful.
DeleteYes I can imagine your Grandson as the boys can sure talk! haha! Thank you for your kind words! I am enjoying the fact that some big projects have been completed. Now I can concentrate on Christmas. Have a lovely new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Hello Annabel
ReplyDeleteYou have made that house into a super home, it looks so fresh and nice. It is peculiar that many people see liabilities rather than assets and even though the renovations will have cost I'm sure you won't regret it. We are custodians for future generations too.
The cakes look so lovely all packaged up and it made me laugh that you had instructions to get a better star for the tree topper!
It has been a busy and satisfying week.
I went to a free lino cutting workshop and made some Christmas cards. I gave my friend a big butternut squash as a thank you for running the workshop.
We went with the family to a magic bubble show in the garden of a historic house. It was free and so much fun, the children were so excited. We took a picnic, flasks of hot chocolate and wrapped up warm.
I got chatting to a young Mum at a playground with my granddaughter and she told me about a free App, Playground Buddy which gives info about playgrounds all over the country and the world I think. I've installed it on my phone and I'll be taking my granddaughter to visit some.
I received a free pack of Christmas cinnamon biscuits with a supermarket voucher, which I've stashed away and also a free shower gel which I put in the donation box in the store.
I tried a new recipe for mushroom stroganoff and we enjoyed it so that will feature sometimes and help save money on meat. Crazy prices for meat now. My batch cook was tomato and red lentil soup. I found boxes of chocolate biscuits on a deal so I bought some for us and some as raffle prizes. I stocked up on baby shampoo on a deal.
I turned out a big drawer and found various treasures including a couple of beautiful handkerchiefs I've never used. I was also able to donate some new items to our church fundraiser.
I have planted up the second of the big water tanks with bulbs and wallflowers for the spring. I fill the bottom with logs, then homemade compost and top with a bag of bought compost. When I dug into the compost heap I found an enormous cache of walnuts the squirrels have buried. I tried to leave most of them so they can eat them over the winter.
I have filled a small planter for a Secret Santa present. I put in bulb compost then mixed in with topsoil the moles have thrust up in the lawn in their molehills ( my husband gets very cross with them!). Then planted some crocus bulbs, several sweet violet plants I've dug up from the garden and I've got moss to top it with and a big pine cone to set in the planter like a Christmas tree. So it's a sort of Christmas scape. I saw the idea in a Christmas magazine.
I've mended two pairs of my husband's trousers.
We've used carrots, leeks, kale and cooking apples from the garden.
At the garden centre they had piles of plastic produce boxes for free so I bought a couple home.
Phew! Sorry that's a long post. Hope I haven't bored you all to sleep!
Best wishes to everyone.
Penny in the UK
Dear Penny, People are daunted to fill big containers for planting not realising that the bottom can be filled with logs, sticks etc and all sorts of stuff. All the bulbs will look heavenly! I adore violets too.
DeleteThat is super cute about the Squirrels. Like out of a Shirley Barber book!
This bubble show sounds wonderful and I can jus imagine how much all the kids loved it! Probably adults too! And the different playgrounds to go to, that is exciting to go to new ones, like a little adventure.
I love the sound of your Christmas scape.. I adore Moss... and I have pinecones so you have me thinking.
You had a great week. Dont apologise for a long post I love it! With much love Annabel.xxx
All that food you prepared looks amazing! I love the single serving idea! We just celebrated our Thanksgiving yesterday so we are eating leftovers! I was wondering if you have kept in touch with Laines family? It's a tough time of year and I was thinking about them. So enjoy your weekly blog posts.
ReplyDeleteDear Becky, Yes it is a year since Laine died. The last person I spoke to was her daughter in law. I might send her a message. I miss her a lot. But she is still doing so much good work for the Lord through her writings! Thank you so much! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteYour cook ups always look so delicious and I appreciate how you give us ideas to stretch meat especially with the atrocious prices we're seeing and that keep increasing.Your house on the hill looks very nice.Do you have any pictures of the inside that you could share? I love seeing all your creative ideas.Glad to see Jenny is back also.It started snowing last night here in Alberta Canada,we have about 6 inches so far and is expected to quit this evening.I took frozen chicken carcasses out of the freezer last night and put them in my large slow cooker to cook over night and then this morning I strained the broth and put it right back in the slow cooker with any meat I could pick off to make chicken, vegetable barley soup.Last week I unthawed frozen raspberries from our garden to make raspberry jam and saved the drained juice to make jelly.I didn't have quite enough raspberry juice so I added homemade apple juice to it.It turned out delicious and I got double duty from my fruit.Groceries are atrocious prices here and not expected to get any better so we all need to be as creative as we can nowdays.Your Tom is so cute and such a blessing to you.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I did show in May how the kitchen turned out. I might get some more pictures to post in the new year. Oh snow! How lovely! It is the first day of summer here and it is cold, dark and pouring!
DeleteYour jelly and jam sound so beautiful! Yes this issue with both prices and availability seems to be pretty much world wide. Some places being worse obviously. So food waste is not an option. Using everything, making the most of everything, even some trade/barter... giving food items as gifts... making the most of leftovers like you did with making the stock... everything counts. I am noting your tip on apple to fill out berries... brilliant idea. A very productive week! I hope the new week is equally good for you! With love Annabel.xxx
Your posts are such a blessing! I love the meatloaf cook up and your individual servings. Tom is such a good helper! I like that he untangled the lights! Your top house is such a blessing too!
ReplyDeleteMy week has been good and productive. Our turkey was a great deal at four dollars each. I got two, one each week. We cleaned all the meat off the turkey on Thursday and I will find fun things to do with the small pieces! The Thanksgiving meal was inexpensive this year because the turkey was a good price. Praise the Lord for some respite with grocery prices rising. I'm working on quilts and embroidery in the evenings, using that down time to be productive. We're still painting in the house, and need to get another coat on before we decorate for the holiday! I'm looking forward to adding some cheer!
Bless you and your week!
Stacy in Virginia
Dear Stacy, What a deal on the turkey! A turkey here is around $40 and that is a smallish one! I wait until I get deals after Christmas sometimes around $2 a pound and I am giddy with excitement then! Also... I love turkey!
DeleteYou would understand my joy with the top house being painted! IN the past I painted so many houses. I know what work it is but it looks so good! Yes add all the festive cheer you can! With love Annabel.xxx
Hello! Your small meatloaf portions are a wonderful idea, thank you for the reminder, I just made meatloaf last week and was thinking I needed a new plan other than cooking and then hacking it to bits to freeze ;). I really enjoy your photos and updates, thank you for taking the time. The house on the hill looks fantastic…isn’t it amazing what we can do when we focus. I am working on deciding what my priorities will be next year, I do much better when I concentrate just on a few items.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the Thanksgiving wishes, it is my favorite holiday! All the best, Hilogene in Az.
Dear Halogen, Thank you so much! I really have to set goals and track how I am going... or they just wouldn't happen! I need to think over this year and begin to make some goals for next year. I just remembered to order a planner as that also helps me!
DeleteSo many things do well as single servings like quiches and tarts etc. It is good portion control too as I always overestimate what I will need! With much love Annabel.xxx
When I read about the renovation of the top house I felt SO energised! This kind of project is the thing I like the most. Well done!!! The house looks amazing. It seems one of your God-given talents is to see potential, make a plan, and take all the necessary steps until the very end, through setbacks and all. You have worked very hard and now it is harvest time. I hope this house will be a blessing for all those who will stay in it!!
ReplyDeleteIsn't Tom cute with his bears...🌸
I had mending things piling up, so I started with needle and thread and now most of it is done. Looking forward to a new project (cable knitting), but way better to first finish tasks like mending and weaving in ends (baby blanket). Have a good week! Esther🌷
Dear Esther, Thank you so much! Sometimes I felt like it was very slow with the house. One month I got new screen doors put in. Another month I got all new blinds. Another month I had a stove and exhaust fan put in... on and on!
DeleteWell done on the mending... and the weaving the ends in is the most painstaking part of a blanket!! With much love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel and Bluebirds,
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing week and year of accomplishments! Congratulations on finishing the house on the hill. I can sure relate to all the work and expenses that went into ressurecting the place.
Thanks for sharing your adventures with Tom. I sure enjoy his boy's perspective.😊
And thank you for sharing your fruitcake recipe. I plan to use it!
My family and I had a lovely Thanksgiving. Just being together was a great gift! My second son is home from the Navy. We haven't seen him in 11 months. And I only spoke to him 3 times on the phone.
I challenged myself to working on Christmas projects everyday. And so far I am meeting my goal. I'm making cards, sewing gifts, and assembling kits that fit the person's interests. The Lord bless you all as you bless others!
Love, Leslie in OH
Dear Leslie,
DeleteThank you! Yes boys perspective is really interesting and at times very funny!
I am so happy your son is home and you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! And working on Christmas each day will sure get you there! This is what I have been doing too and loving it. With much love Annabel.xxx
We have enjoyed a super week! We had a delicious, low-stress Thanksgiving Day. We prepared the grandchildren’s Advent calendars (375 pieces of Dove chocolates), mailed off the Christmas cards to Santa for the North Pole postmark, baked the first batch of fruitcakes to hand out yesterday on Family Fun Day. Purchased my Christmas stamps. Will write out those cards next week. Our family hasn’t exchanged gifts in 33 years. We give the grandkids a bit of cash, a family t-shirt, and some store bought junk food. No stress. No mess. It’s going to be a fantastic December! Peace, good health and love to all the Bluebirds. I really enjoy this blog. Thank you! 🙏🏻
ReplyDeleteP.S. Our first snowfall in Central Illinois (Midwest US) today. Very beautiful!
Dear Diane,
DeleteI love that you prepared the Advent calendars! Well done on the fruit cakes! This week I have been able to hand out two... this is so much fun.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! With love Annabel.xxx
Dearest Annabel, sorry I haven't posted in awhile. Those meatloaf yum ! I'd love the recipe living alone id love the single serves and then to freeze even better !! I cannot applaude you enough for the joy of finishing that top house and the wonderful hard work you put in !!! So much hard work and then the lord provided this for someone in need just wow ! What a blessing they is to someone !! And to think doing it all was part of God's work ! I am sure they love it it looks cosy and beautiful! And you have so many blessings going on around you. The rain, your beautiful grandson, the tree, sparkie, being so creative and such a great cook ! Annabel you are lovely. !
ReplyDeleteSending love, Sonia in Sydney
Dear Sonia, I will send you the meatloaf recipe... it would work really well for you if you have a muffin tray or small pans. Thank you so much for your encouragement! I have been thinking about you and mailed you! Im so glad to hear from you! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteHello Annabel,
ReplyDeleteI too had it in my head to want to get the Christmas baking done before the end of November and I almost did! I just have one more round of fruit mince pies to bake. But the cakes for us and gift cakes are all done. Every year I say I’m going to get it done by October! But that has never happened I’m happy with November though, it takes some of the stress away to be ahead like that! Your cakes look beautiful 💜
What a transformation your guest house is!! I love that you saved it despite all its failings. So much hard work, time and money, but it has paid off. It looks great 👍🏼
I bit the bullet and purchased a Costco membership. Something I had pondered for quite some time. It’s a big deal because Costco is 1 hour and 45 minutes from us, so it has to be worth the fuel money and membership cost. Well last Tuesday hubby and I made the trip and we paired it with trips to other outlets. We spent a lot of money BUT we saved so much money too. Well in excess of our fuel and membership. I was so happy. I feel so abundant and blessed to be able to afford these groceries. The bank account might look poorly but a full pantry is worth its weight in gold!
It is going to be busy for all of us in the coming weeks. Please everyone take time to enjoy it. I intend to savour every moment this Christmas. To keep it as slow and intentional as possible and to build memories instead of getting lost in the hustle and bustle 🎄
Take care everyone 🪺
From Cheryl
Dear Cheryl, You have done very well on the baking! I am so happy about you going to Costco. Yes if you can incorporate other stuff into the trip and make it worth while then it is fantastic! Yes also this is truly a good investment in getting ahead. I think thats brilliant. I so agree without... with the hurry and so much to do we need to appreciate everything! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel, you have had a wonderful week. I love seeing what you have achieved. It brings so much joy to my life, thank you. Your top house looks fantastic! It is an incredible asset and in this climate, it is really fantastic. I love your Christmas cakes and how you make them for people. They are beautiful gifts. I also love all those meat loaves. It is wonderful to see Tom growing up to be such a helpful person, what a wonderful family you are to raise such a great boy.I think we may have copied your little Christmas tree idea! I love our little tree and it sits up on top of the cupboard. I have the lights on, ready to clean the house. I am getting there with gifts and Christmas cards. I also hope to have a big clear out and do some sorting out of cupboards this week. Thank you for your beautiful encouragement, joy, love and kindness. Every time you post it really is an act of kindness for us all. Lots of love, Bridget And I am SO happy to hear Jenny is posting again! We need more light in the world.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! What a lovely and kind comment. I do appreciate it! Bridge just soak in all the good things, I know with kids it's all full on this time of year but they grow up so fast! This week has been a bit crazy here and went really fast! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteWhat a huge accomplishment to have transformed the house! I’m sure the last touches you spoke about felt good to complete.
ReplyDeleteI think Tom will be taller than the Christmas tree next year! He’s such a great helper. All of your plants look so healthy, you will be loving those pumpkins when they’re ready!
We had my son’s birthday last week and it was a lovely day. Our Christmas tree is up now, the girls love getting things out and displaying them.
We discovered we have a cherry tree! They are very small but should be ready to pick soon I think. Also a pear tree that is looking like it will give us lots of fruit. Im so happy, fruit is horribly expensive.
I hope you’re having a lovely week, I’m sure there are beautiful baking smells in your house.
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen, Oh wow on the fruit trees! If you can find old net curtains to make covers before the birds attack... baskets of fruit would be so good! Happy Birthday to your son! The Christmas tree adds so much atmosphere! Thank you so much re the house! With much love Annabel.xxx
