Feather your Nest Friday, 3rd October, 2025.
Welcome to October! The year is moving way too fast. You might as well get a cup of tea this is going to take a while.
I always say make hay while the sun shines. This can mean get your seedlings in while you can, clean when you can, be up on the washing, have some spare meals... all the things, while you can, because there will be some point where you can't.
A couple of weeks ago I slid in the mud in the chicken house and I felt myself falling. (With eggs in a container in one hand.) In a fluke move I saved myself! Not falling was great but instead one leg slid a mile and the other did not. It hurt and I thought mmm I might feel this in a few days. Then I forgot about it. But days later things began to hurt. And each day just seemed to get worse. I have new empathy for anyone with back/leg/knee pain! The things I had done in advance were all a big blessing. But then when the crisis is over we go back to build up again and making hay while the sun shines! It has just been a reminder... do things and keep ahead when you can. You are going to be so thankful you did at some point!
I will start in no particular order.
Chloe harvested her Parsley. I processed it for her in the Freeze drier and returned it to her for use all summer.
Because it is school holidays my Grandson Sidney came to stay. He was so excited. Well, we got to work. He thought this all was fabulous fun and we planted all the seedlings that I got last Friday.
I had bought a small size shovel. Best purchase ever! Sidney shovelled sheep manure and compost for hours.
We filled pots, topped up other pots. Sidney went in the tractor to bring up compost...
He drove the mower to pick up manure...
We got about forty seedlings planted and watered in.
Sidney thought this was marvellous. I thought it was too! That night it rained. Perfect!
We took a ride over the paddocks to Nana Pat. The big rocks in her garden were a big attraction.

Annabel, what a full week you have had, filled with love and family and accomplishments. The wedding bouquet looks beautiful, the bride had to be so thrilled with all the flowers you had made for all.
ReplyDeletePrayers your leg heals. Yes back and leg problems slow us down. It is always good to be on top of things, for inopportune times.
We have had a week of mishaps here, the shower is still leaking, husband ordered a new shower faucet unit and valves, though son said it will take awhile for delivery. I am thankful we have another bathroom to use. We had a heated floor installed, they said to wait 2 weeks before turning it on to let the mortar and grout to set. Well husband turned it on yesterday, nothing! So another thing to repair. It seemed like a week full of mishaps.
I was only able to get the usual housework done as we were running errands and going to appointments this week. I'm behind on Fall Cleaning, haven't even touched the windows. Funny how we try to get things done so the next season is easier. Winter is on it's way up here and we have even started trimming plants back. It's leaf season, so lots of cleaning up. Husband bought a tool to pick up acorns, it's a oval cage on a pole, this will help that we don't need to bend down to clean up. I'm just hoping the deer eat most of them so there is less work for us.
I did bake a pumpkin squares recipe, it is pretty much molasses cookie dough on bottom and pumpkin pie filling on top, husband fell in love with it and said not to lose the recipe.
May all have a blessed weekend.
Dear Rosanne, Oh goodness things breaking, leaking, not working... they come in threes! Im behind on Spring cleaning! So maybe the new week we will both get more done!
DeleteI would love to have acorns! This may be silly as I wouldn't know what to do with them but they are so pretty to me!
Molasses in cookie sounds good! Have a lovely weekend! With love Annabel.xxx
The family pictures are fantastic. Having all six grandchildren in one picture is priceless. You had an amazing week, my friend. What a blessing.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Glenda! I have to get some printed for gifts and to keep. Have a beautiful weekend! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteOh Sparkie and the children! Also the gorgeous photo of your Mum with the greatgrands and all the children and dogs together, bliss! I so enjoyed seeing all those photos.
ReplyDeleteNothing to report this week as we've been on holiday but should be back to it tomorrow ready to report in next week.
Take care lovely Bluebirds.
Penny in the UK
Dear Penny, Im glad you got a holiday and hope its been fantastic! I know you will be back on the job the minute you get home! Thanks so much for your kinds always comments! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteHi Annabel, another beautiful post.
ReplyDeleteGod has definitely given you the gift of encouragement, you even push me into high gear. When I feel all done in, I think of all you do and I get back at it. I must admit though, I have more years on this body.
You're planning and planting for your growing season, and I'm harvesting, preserving and cleaning beds out. I'm so very grateful for the abundant harvest the Lord gifted us. My canning shelves are filled our freezers are near capacity. I've tried giving produce away but no one wants it so it's being canned and stored in boxes.
I would definitely love a freeze dryer but feel that it"s not worth the investment at this point in my life.
I look forward to your posts and sharing your joys of family. Your grands are beautiful, happy children. Your Scout reminds me of our Shepherd but we call him the snoopervisor. He oversees everything.
Have a blessed week Annabel, filled with peace and joy. God Bless, Linda
Dear Linda, Thank you! Thats so encouraging to me! I am so glad your garden gave you so much and also how you made the most of it all! Having full freezers and shelves is just fantastic! Well done! It is a lot of work but it is so good! Dehydrating is still a pretty good substitute for a freeze drier. I think it is great there are many ways of preserving to choose from.
DeleteHave a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
The family photos are so beautiful! Some could be turned into Christmas presents. I’m so happy you and Sidney had such a good time together. Also that you enjoyed the wedding. What a lovely week! I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been in pain, I hope you recover quickly.
ReplyDeleteI had a trip for an appointment this week and took two of my children so they could catch up with friends. We were able to make a lovely gift of toiletries from supplies we’ve picked up earlier for a birthday girl. I was also able to stop at the cheese shop and got a lot of cheese at amazing prices. Last night I made Mac n cheese with a mixture of 4 cheeses lol.
Being away and staying in other peoples houses always makes me feel like planning. I noticed some things I loved about their homes and made notes for things I want to copy!
I got a $10 voucher from Spotlight and they had 50% off a cotton yarn I’ve always wanted to buy (I think you had made some wash cloths with it, it’s Abbey Road and bright colours). So I ended up with 3 100g balls for $11.
We are back to school on Monday so this weekend I plan to bake some lunchbox snacks and make something substantial I can eat over the week. I really want to concentrate on eating a good lunch each day.
I too am excited to do some Christmas planning!
Have a lovely weekend, rest those legs!
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen, I agree with you that lovely photos I a frame or as a photo book are great presents especially for the Nanas I reckon. Wow to getting cheese at great prices! Mac and cheese is delicious!
DeleteLovely that you could get some cotton yarn. I am just moving on to cotton now as the weather is warming up.
I can imagine your back to school baking! Mini quiches are a good lunch. But so are nice wraps... lots of possibilities. It does help your day to eat a good lunch. Ok well... I have Tom's birthday presents wrapped and now I can get stuff out of the Christmas cupboard! My poor spare room goes from one thing to another but a bed is a good surface! Now it will be Christmas presents! Have a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel and Jen in NZ. I find grilling a batch of chicken (extra tasty if you have a bbq) with some lettuce and hard boiled egg (you can keep those also in fridge pre done and peeled)! On a wrap with a avocado (I take the avocado and a knife to slice with a tomato but I don't put these on until I'm ready to eat. Other nice sandwich fillings/wraps I like are tuna , salad,.etcmnA zucchini slice is also easy and filling. You can eat it cold or warm it.
DeleteGood luck with baking !
Sonia in Sydney. Australia
You have the most beautiful family! All those bright smiles are evidence of their joy and peace! What a blessing!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I know I am very blessed. And another baby on the way as well! I am very lucky they are all so beautiful!xxx
DeleteThank you for sharing your week, Annabel. So sorry to hear about your injury. Glad you are improving. Your grandkids are so precious! How wonderful that you and your mom get to spend a lot of time with them. What a good helper Sidney is. He seems to be a hard worker like Tom.
ReplyDeleteMy week went well. I got to go on a long bike ride with my youngest son. We went to my daughters' cross country meet. I saw an apple tree along the bike trail. Two days later, we returned to pick them.😁 Plus we got free apples at another tree in town. Ironically, a homeless man passed by as we were picking.
On the way home from apple picking, I picked some wild sunchoke flowers. These look a bit like small sunflowers. So we have a lovely arrangement on the table! And apples waiting to be peeled and sliced for the freezer. I might dry some as well. Mending and cleaning rounded up my week. I'm very inspired to get started on Christmas gifts after seeing all that was made on the Tuesday Afternoon Club.!
God bless you all, Bluebirds!
Love, Leslie
Ohio, USA
Dear Leslie, I love that you spotted an apple tree on the bike ride and went back! That is exactly what I would do. And now you know it's there you can go back this time next year... make sure you remember the month! I love finding a new fruit tree!
DeleteYes it is time to get on to Christmas. The year is passing so fast. I hope you have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, What a beautiful time with the Grandchildren. I hope your leg is fully healed. I can attest to your message of keep up with everything. While I am still not 100% I am always glad that I have pushed myself to keep up with housework as I do never know when I'll have a day that I cannot do anything. I got 4 big loads of washing out into the sunshine today and I know that tomorrow I will be happy I did.
ReplyDeleteBoth my overlockers were jammed. I had them sitting on the table - a lovely new friend came over for a cuppa and she was as happy to fiddle with them as doing a jigsaw and fixed both of them for me while we chatted and enjoyed our cups of tea. I was really grateful. With my hands the way they are I cannot do too much sewing at a time. But by doing 10 dish cloths a day I have managed to get 50 done. I need double this as I give nearly everyone I know 2 wrapped up like a bon bon at Christmas. I feel good to be achieving something. Love Clare
Dear Clare, How wonderful to have a friend help you sort out the overlockers! And doing 10 dish cloths a day is amazing! Getting 50 done is huge! Also hanging out 4 loads of washing is a lot of work and lifting. So you are doing very well. I hope you feel better and better. I know it has been such a hard year or you. I hope it's all behind you now! Have a lovely new week! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel, I am sorry you fell over. I will keep you in my prayers. It is hard to get anything done when in pain. I am very impressed with your week! Sidney is such a little cutie, I love how busy he got. That shovel was a good investment! And he would have loved getting to drive lots of things. Sparkie would have loved all the extra pats and company, and would be still sleeping well I am imagining. Seeing all the grandchildren together is so wonderful. How fantastic to all be together. There’s nothing better in life! The flowers are magnificent. You are gifted in so many things. I love how you and Sidney planted up lots of things. I need to get on to that too. Lots of love, Bridget
ReplyDeleteDear Bridge, Sorry for slow reply! The spade being wooden and metal is beautiful. Now I got the matching fork. And I ordered a metal kids wheelbarrow as well. Tom has since worked with this spade and hand digger and helped too. Well they are capable of a lot! They love to work! I discovered I am bette with a small shovel than a big one myself! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteEvery picture of your family is worthy pf printing and framing! You have a beautiful family! How special the moments with them are and will be. You had a BUSY week. Sorry you slipped in the chicken coop, but I'm so glad you didn't fall. Didn't slow you down too much. :-) --Elise
ReplyDeleteDear Elise, Thank you very much! I will print and frame some as for gifts to family they would be perfect. The slippery chicken coop has been sorted out. It now has a roof and wont get so wet... I am hoping to avoid a repeat performance! With love, Annabel.xxx
DeleteSo sorry to hear about your injury - as someone with two very bad knees, I do sympathize.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great help your grandson was - they are all real little workers! The children all look so happy, what a credit they are to your daughters. Just lovely photos.
It has been a busy couple of weeks with a lot of cleaning, entertaining and grocery shopping (for bargains), Last week I stocked up on dish liquid when it went on sale for $1 per bottle - normally $2.50 - $3.00. This week, aside from the weekly basics I managed to stock up on pork. Ham steaks (which I cut up into 5 to 6 servings), plus pork chops at 40% off - ham is on sale for Thanksgiving (which is next weekend in Canada) so I may get a small ham later in the week.
I cooked liver, onions & mashed potatoes for friends one afternoon - not everyone enjoys this but those three did so I was happy to make it and share it with them. This weekend I have cooked the pork chops in tomato sauce, with onions & peppers and a chicken curry with lots of veg. Multiple servings have gone into the freezer for future meals. I had planned on making some soup but the weather is heating up to 29C tomorrow and staying extra hot for the next few days so I think that will wait until later in the week when hopefully the Fall weather will return.
Have a lovely week and look after the knees.
Dear Margie, Sorry for the slow reply! I really sympathise with you having bad knees. Knees are tricky. So are shoulders... Mum has a bad knee and a bad shoulder. Thank you for your kind words! What a deal on dish soap! And pork chops, which I love. Your meals sound lovely and you had a great week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteYour grandbabies are so sweet! You're so blessed to have good little helpers! I'm so looking forward to having grandchildren! I'm sorry about your knee. It truly affects a lot of things we do. I'll be praying.
ReplyDeleteThis week was a lot of catching up on cleaning. My fall cleaning is done for the most part. I also had a chance to sew a little bit on a new quilt pattern. That's always fun!
Many blessings to you this week!
Stacy in Virginia
Dear Stacy, Having Grandchildren is like having children. No one explains what it's like because really you cant explain. But having Grandkids is pretty much a repeat of having kids the bond is so strong. You would give your life for them.
DeleteI am so glad you got to work on your new quilt pattern! I just chose the fabrics for my next few blocks... and I love them! This makes me keen to get going! I love that feeling of enjoying a project so much! With much love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, all your family is beautiful - all the children, your Mum, Sparky and Scout. They are Blessings from Above! Thank you for sharing the pictures with us, you are a Treasure for us. Sending good thoughts and smiles from far away, Laura_s_world fom Romania
ReplyDeleteDear Laura, Thank you! I am thinking of you every day and following the news in your region. Another Bluebird... her neighbours are Lithuanian. This gives me some information from there. Others in England... I am piecing together pictures from Europe. I am praying and hope you are getting plenty of eggs! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI'm sorry about your leg Annabel, but you don't let anything keep you down and that's admirable.
ReplyDeleteI love all of your photos. Such a beautiful family you have and wonderful memories being made. And your flowers you did for the wedding are just gorgeous!
I know I'm always late to the party haha, but I still wanted to chime in and say hello to everyone.
XOXO
Vicky
Well I am late to reply! Sorry Vicky! I know you live with pain. It is also a credit to you that you are always cheerful! Thank you for your kind words!! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteJust lovely pictures!🌸
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!xxx
DeleteDearest Annabel, I am so sorry you took a fall ! I have a bad knee so I feel for you ! A heat pack gives some relief.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely set of photos of both sets of children. With your mum. So precious !! I miss my grandparents so much I was so very close to them and used to spend holidays with them. My Nana would bake and show me , and they had a big gumtree she would set up the lounge chair under and I would read books for hours ! No computers then !
It's suddenly got hot here in Sydney ! I do enjoy the longer days and nights I can walk my dog. The girls love your dog so much ! Hope you had a great week ! Love to all bluebirds. Sonia in Sydney.
Dear Sonia, Your Grandma and the lounge under the tree... how beautiful! It is still weirdly cool here. But that is ok. I am not a fan of the heat. The kids all love Sparkie but Harper is obsessed. I think she is going to need a little dog! With much love Annabel.xxx
