Feather your nest Friday, 10th October, 2025.
It was an epic week! After the wedding, and limping around for a couple of weeks, I felt exhausted. I was thinking now I can get back to... Spring cleaning, Spring planting, Christmas plans... so many things I have lined up. But there was only one problem, my leg hurt so much. The kind of ache that wakes you up in the night over and over. Anyway I was sick of it and not resting it because of all the things and having kids here and so on... didn't really pay off. I do realise some things will just never heal unless we let them heal. But we don't or cant.
As we all have experienced pain drags your mood down and your ability to think. For anyone in long term pain I really feel for you. It is a lot of people and it is a battle.
Well, when I was feeling a bit defeated about it, as I had gone backwards instead of forwards, this story came to me (across my media feed) and it spoke to me.
It is a long story so I will break it right down. Elijah was so tired and over it that he told God he just was done and wanted to die. He had been through an epic amount, to be fair. Anyway he feels this way and then goes to sleep. But how many times in life have we felt that... I am done, I just can't take it any more!?
Anyway, God lets Elijah sleep... then he sends an angel to give Elijah cool water and food and he sleeps again. Later the Angel returns and gives Elijah more food to eat.
After true rest and restoration Elijah thought things weren't so bad after all and he went on to do many more amazing things!
So (although I am nothing like Elijah) I took the hint and decided to rest my leg Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Like properly. I rested, kept it elevated, heat packs... did minimal things and stuck to sitting down tasks... so I paid bills and cut out fabric and all I could think of! I also had sleeps. Three afternoons in a row I slept for a couple of hours.
As I started to feel better I began to think and plan. I watched You tube for gardening, homestead, cooking and sewing inspiration!
I had ideas! Andy would say "oh no..." haha. But I hatched plans! Isn't that weird? From being tired and sick of pain now I could think again. This rest transformed me and my leg was soo much better!
We don't rest as we should. The Sabbath is there for a reason. We need to be restored. We can't make a plan or reflect on life if we are just too tired and too busy to "see." Resting made me see again.
My helpful companion kept me company. 😊
So... my fenced in back yard is my container garden. It's my biggest success, produce wise. I have expanded with more and more really big containers. It occurred to me that the "hedge" looked beyond saving now. And that if it as gone I could use the cement thoughts I was given to fill that area with huge planters!
And I realised I had two lemon trees in big pots. If they were planted in the orchard I would gain two more big planters...
And I realised I could plant pumpkins in another huge planter box if it had a nice top up of sheep manure.
Tom came over. We made a Thursday afternoon action plan.
Tom and my helper Andrew moved the lemon trees.
We got them dug in and watered.
The tractor was used to lift the troughs... Tom was told to sit on the mower and NOT MOVE while this was going on. He could observe. I had eyes on him obviously.
He said it was better than television. Then they filled the pumpkin patch planter with manure. All the pumpkin seeds were watered in well.
The troughs were carried to my back yard then rolled into place and lowered with a strap and the tractor. (So they wouldn't smash.)

Annabel and Blue Birds, Happy Friday!
ReplyDeleteAnnabel, it is such great news that your leg is on the mend, prayers it is 100% back very soon. I'm sorry you have had to go through this, though it did prove to be a life lesson. It is wonderful all turned out so well. If we pay attention many life experiences are teaching moments.
It is hard to sit and not do when one is in pain, one sits and thinks of all things that need to be accomplished. It is a good time to make lists and prioritize them.
Your garden is coming along so well. Love your little helper, he definitely isn't afraid to work all day. What a good man he is going to grow up to be.
I had a week of appointments and errand running. I did use one day to make a Pumpkin, Cheesecake Braid, it was huge, so I decided to take part of it to my PT, she's pregnant and I thought a good treat would make her feel good. Been working on getting house ready for winter here and husband has been trying to keep up with lawn and leaf collection.
We did do a big shop one day and yesterday we went to another store to take advantage of their specials. Trying to fill the holes in my pantry for the winter. I did notice low stock or no stock in areas of the grocery store.
I'm still working on an afghan as when I was hurting it was hard to concentrate on not making mistakes and getting frustrated pulling the squares apart. I like having warm covers for sitting in our family room, so with colder weather approaching, it is helping me get back into crocheting. We had our first day of freezing temperatures -0.55*C. Which means more yard work as it is now time to cut the roses and other bushes back.
Dear Rosanne,
DeleteYes some of our best ideas come from when resting and thinking! If you are really unwell and cant crochet that is a bad sign. It is a bad sign for me!
Getting ready for winter is a good plan. I am doing all I can to be ready for summer!! With love Annabel.xxx
I was thinking about how many people's lives you affect.
ReplyDeleteYou affect all of us who read your blog. Your children, grand children.
Your a great teacher, encourager.
You are just an amazing woman.
If I had a tenth of your energy and skills I'd be thrilled.
Take care of yourself because your
important to do many people.
You grandson is precious.
Your new puppy is a cutie pie.
Thank you so much for your encouraging words! My Grandson came and helped me yesterday. He is so good. Digging holes seems to be a favourite at the moment! You really blessed me!xxx
DeleteWhat a lovely post. It’s so sweet to have your Grandson to help you and he is truly happy helping you. What a blessing! So sorry about the pain in your leg. But you are smart and wise and did the right thing to rest. I like to think rest and sleep are like medicine. I hope you have a wonderful time planting and taking care of your plants, and getting prepared for Christmas. Thank you so much for your blog. 🩷 Sue in USA
ReplyDeleteDear Sue, Thank you! Yes I am sure nothing heals like sleep. I got all the seedlings in and watered in and today we have some rain!! Rain does more good for seedlings than anything! Thank you or your kind words! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteSo sorry about your injury, Annabel. But I am thankful that you rested and was restored! Amazing how God teaches us through His Word exactly what we need to do. What a testimony!
ReplyDeleteLovely scones and quilting. Tom and Andrew really helped you accomplish allot! My husband always reminds me how much I accomplish after I have rested. My 12 year old daughter cooed over your photo of Zackie and Scout. I had to show her a picture of Sparkie, of course!
My week has been a good one. I told my husband that I am balancing my chores, baking, homeschooling, cleaning, a sewing project, and exercise daily. Of course, with the beautiful Fall weather, it is easy to get outside.🍂
The local college offered a free birding class that my 14 year old son wanted to attend. It was very enjoyable! Now, he and I are going on a Nature walk tomorrow with the class.😁
I'm glad to be trying to use up food in the freezer. I baked up some peanut butter pumpkin bread to use old frozen pumpkin puree. This is wonderful for breakfast. I'm so happy to finally get my fridge cleaned out. I had to put the chore on the back burner while I canned and raked leaves. Oh, well, to everything there is a season.
My husband just returned with a 50 lb. bag of russet potatoes for $19.99. We like to make this purchase when we have eaten up our homegrown potatoes.
God bless you all,
Leslie (Ohio)
Dear Leslie, Thank you! I love birds! Birdwatching has always been one of my loves. I like to identify everything!
DeleteYes it is a major challenge to rest and keep all the chores and household-family running. If we can get the balance right it is like hitting the jackpot!
There is a potato shortage in Australia! I am not sure of the current price if we can get them at all but less just say the deal your husband got is incredible! Well done on the fridge too! I love a clean organised and fresh fridge! With much love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of what most nearly 5year olds in this crazy computer gamed world are doing, Tom stands out as a wonderful beacon of how constructive and practical young children can be. He will be a wonderful human. I won’t say ‘man’ because certainly as a boy and teen he will be an amazing fellow.
If I’m blessed with grandchildren I’ll be seriously trying to follow your example, although with less tractors available 😅
Kate
Dear Kate, Thank you! Tom has already said his future wife has to know how to make lemon pies with cream and strawberries on top lol. I hope you will be blessed with Grandchildren. Its gorgeous. Grandparents who are available and put the time in are lie changing. My own were amazing and so I had very good examples. It feels like it could rain this afternoon.. Im hoping so! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel, I am so glad your leg is getting better. Thank you for reminding us to rest. Your post was beautiful and my heart melted seeing little Tom’s spade and watering can hanging up like that. It is the most beautiful thing. What an adorable young boy. I love all your planters. I think I will get a few more pots, this is a great idea. Lots of love, Bridget
ReplyDeleteDear Bridge, I have used so many random things as planters. The bigger the better. These just seem to produce the most. I got Tom a fork as well... I will put a photo tomorrow of him with his equipment. He went in the tractor and had to take ALL his tools with him. And now they re all back on the hook! I hope you are having a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI didn't see your letter but someone was kind to point the way! I look forward to your Friday letters! I could use Tom here to help me! What a lot of things you two accomplish! My garden is about done for this season but it has blessed me this year with a lot of food. Fall season here and my allergies have kicked in
ReplyDeleteYour quilt will be sp pretty with all the nice blocks you are making. Have a wonderful week end and thanks for taking the time to write the Friday letters.........Nancy
Dear Nancy, Thank you so much! Yes having a little helper is lovely! Your garden did great! I need to stop and count my quilt blocks! I am really enjoying this project. With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteHave just caught up. I spent all of last weekend and Monday sitting with the two youngest grandsons while mom and dad had a belated honeymoon/anniversary trip. They did wonderfully well with Mama especially Baby Henry, as Caleb insists on calling him. Henry is just over a year old now. The parents had a grand time and Gramma and Grampa came home semi-comatose, lol. It was absolutely lovely, and we enjoyed every minute, but we were so tired when we came home. We rested all day Tuesday, ran monthly errands on Wednesday and then had three more grandkids over to spend the day on Thursday. Again, had a lovely time with the children. I have a total of 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren but only get to see 7 of the grandchildren on anything like a regular basis. I make up for not getting to see the other seven by just eating up all the time I can with those who are nearby.
ReplyDeleteI have just started a full-on inventory of foodstuffs in my house, starting with the meats this past Friday. I generally do this about once every 3 or 4 months just to stay on top of things and make sure that my supplies are well sorted and used in a timely manner. I am too guilty of pushing new things in the freezer and the pantry in front of and on top of the older things. Sorting things out is a huge help in keeping track of the older items and keeping things better organized.
You were a wise woman to take that Biblical example of rest to heart! We try to keep Sabbath in our home three Saturdays a month. The remaining one is a ministry weekend for my husband so we generally will take the Friday before or the Monday following as our rest day. By the end of a busy week I really look forward to that time.
Once I have spent a day resting, I find myself antsy to tackle jobs and inspired to write and so much more. It is well worth it!
And it is especially needful when we are sick or injured. The body uses sleep to regenerate cells and the body is revitalized by it, so your naps were healing naps! So glad that you are feeling better.
Dear Terri, What a wonderful thing to do! It would have been beautiful but I am hearing you on being exhausted afterwards! 14 Grandchildren plus Great Grandchildren! That is amazing!
DeleteThe Sabbath is truly refreshing. God knew what He was doing and what we needed. Even our immune system needs it, not to mention our bodies and minds.
I like your freezer system. I am doing much better since my change over and loving it. I can see what needs building up. I hope your week is going well! With love Annabel.xxx
Hello Annabel,
ReplyDeleteI’m sorry to hear about your leg, but glad to hear it is getting better. I’m glad you received the nudge to rest, it sounds like it was exactly what was needed (in many ways)
That young Tom…just WOW…what a treasure he is and so funny with his little comments 💜
I think resting is something most women do poorly, I know I can’t rest for long, even when I’m tired! I look around and see all the things that need doing and well we all know what happens next!
I find if I go camping ie I’m not at home is the only time I properly rest, because there really is nothing to do but just be, and I love it!
I hope you have a good week Annabel. I hope your leg continues to improve. Have a lovely week bluebirds 🪺
From Cheryl
Dear Cheryl, Thank you! I do know what you mean. When we can see stuff that needs doing it can be hard to take that time off. Going away camping sounds very good for you! We have to find our way to take a break.
DeleteI hope you've had a good new week so far! With love Annabel.xxx
What a wonderful helper your little Tom has become - just amazing for his age.
ReplyDeleteSo glad that you gave yourself that rest time in order to heal - sometimes we just have no choice. But look at all you accomplished once the planning was in place!
I have RA and fibromyalgia and most days there is pain - just to a different degree. I have had to learn to pace myself and to pay attention to my body - a day or two of rest is sometimes a real necessity and yes, I can still accomplish things while resting - just different things.
This week I have managed to get ahead of things at the office, I have caught up on the laundry, rearranged my baking cupboard and did some batch cooking, so , meals of pork chops, chicken curry, turkey slices, and a ground beef mix for future stuffed peppers have all made it into the freezer and today I have made a big pot of carrot, sweet potato, pumpkin and red lentil soup - delicious! This afternoon I am going to make some pumpkin muffins, tidy the kitchen and then spend the rest of the afternoon reading.
Have a wonderful week.
Dear Margie, I am imagining you have to plan what to say yes to and what to say to very thoughtfully. Not getting too tired would be so important. My daughter (youngest) has fibromyalgia.
DeleteI love stuffed peppers! You did s well on the batch cooking! The muffins sound so nice too! What a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, I'm glad you're starting to feel better there is nothing worse than constant pain ! It looks like your pear tree will start fruit soon ! I love that quilt with roses on it ! Just beautiful. And the scones ! Yum ! Much love to you and all bluebirds this week. Sonia in Sydney
ReplyDeleteDear Sonia, Thank you! The second pear tree is flowering now too! I hope to get lots of pears! I love anything with roses and love the fabric too. Yes pain is very depressing quickly! I hope it's a good week for you! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel, I’m glad for you that your leg isn’t as painful as it was. May God help you to deal with the last bit, and prayers for full recovery. The photos are lovely!!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is getting bigger and bigger with each star. It seems like a wonderful, joy-filled project!
🌸🌷 Esther
Dear Esther, Thank you! I need to count how many blocks Ive finished! I just hope they all look good together! I hope you are having a beautiful week! With love Annabel.xxx
