Feather your Nest Friday, 5th September, 2025.

Australia is in Spring!  Wherever you are the change of seasons are here.   I do love them though, each has its purpose.  I have loved winter, the rain (finally), the green,  the fire going, soups,  sewing and baking.  I think I have one or two more weeks then the season of planting my Spring/Summer garden will begin.  In the next week or two I want to get my new freezers set up (they haven't arrived yet) before I tackle the garden and then Spring cleaning.   The fire is still going... tonight is cold!   I will burn through the wood at the back door then I think the fire can go out until next year.   When that happens I start wet wiping all the shelves and surfaces as a fire is gorgeous but it creates ash/dust.   Cleaning that all up makes the house clean and fresh.  Then windows....  and other organising projects!

Anyhow... the biggest project I have going on is work on the shearing shed.  Probably not exiting to everyone but to Tom it is the most fascinating work ever.  All the kids are hopefully coming over for the pouring of cement next week.

I had dealt with all the veggies from the veggie boxes so this week I used up some bananas in Gluten free Banana cakes plus one with regular flour.

I got two regular sized and one gigantic.

The one at the back with the cream cheese frosting may or may not have some missing.  😊

The giant one was sliced up and frozen.

Up at the shearing shed I positioned Tom so he could see the men drill post holes while being safely out of the way.   He had a great view.

The men would dig then hit a rock.   Then use a crow bar and dig again.  All very fascinating.

One project I had been working on was turning this wardrobe into storage for linens I find for sewing.  But some quilt covers and sheets I think are too good to cut up and I save them for the kids beds if needed. Anyway the cupboard was a disgrace and avalanche when I opened the door.   I finally measured it up and found Kmart drawers that I thought would fit.  Well... I am not a very accurate measurer... but I ordered three sets and put them together.   And voila!! They fit like they were custom made!  😊

I find a lot of wardrobe spaces are all air space that isn't easy to use... so this is what I do.

I still have things to add and will label the drawers.  But I love it!  I know what I have and I found at the bottom of the heap so many treasures!   Towel sets,  hand towels,  face washers, tea towels...  in bundles.   ALL of these have been moved to my present cupboard!

I found a wool quilt and had a correct size boys quilt cover... so this quilt is now folded on the end of the boys room bed.

And I found yarn.  Not meant to be in there but now that is in my yarn pantry.

It was like Christmas,  all that I found!

I was given the gift of egg shells for the garden.

I made a very cool voile nightie for Lily for summer in size 2.

I am about half way through a quilt block.  Time ran away from me on that.

I was given some lemons after church.

In the thrift stores... I went to four this week! ... so many amazing finds.  On FB I saw a lady who makes pure wool quilts.  Simple squares but all pure wool... like you might find in wool scarves, fine blankets, skirts, jackets...   some were greys and blues,  some were blues and browns.... and some in greens.   I just love them!  They are very boy/man style.  I checked out her prices too and her small quilts were almost three thousand dollars!  So I determined for next winter I am going to make some.  But it will take me a long time to search for and collect the wool.   On Tuesday I found some!  A pure lambswool baby rug for $4.  Today.... several wool scarves, yardage, a jacket and more.  So the cutting out can begin!   I hope to have photos next week.   It was so much fun hitting the jackpot.  The op shop today had "stuff a bag for $10" and I got so much pure wool plus some cotton dress fabric and more.

Knowing I would be washing up so much wool I made a big batch of wool wash.  Also a double batch of Miracle cleaner.

I have been thinking on the little things.  Saint Therese had "the little way."  Similar to Mother Teresa's "do small things with great love".  Little things really make a big difference.  We might not be able to do big things but we may be able to do SOMETHING.  In an out of control word we can feel a bit helpless.  But there are still many things that we CAN control.   We can control our attitude, our gratitude, our prayer life.   We can control our habits and how much effort we put in.  We can control how we speak and treat others.  We can control what we watch/listen to/consume/read and focus on.  We can control our priorities, goals and what we want to learn.  We can largely control the atmosphere in our home.  So that is a lot.  It might be that we achieve things in minute increments.   But they surely add up.  This is the beauty of the little way.

This is how I feel tonight.  Haha!

It was a good week and I can't wait to show you some of the fabrics I got today but that will be The Tuesday Afternoon Club and next weeks post.

How did you build up your nest this week?  We love to hear!

Sweet dreams everyone! xxx

  1. Just love that last big paragraph, Annabel. So good to keep reminding ourselves of these things, and to continue to put our full trust and confidence in God. I was salivating looking at that cream cheese frosting! We are truly in harvest season now...freezing green beans, swiss chard, berries, broccoli; canning applesauce, beets, pickles; drying apples and zucchini. My tomatoes are late to ripen, but the plants are loaded! Let's hope we get through the early/mid September frost threat that usually happens, because then we're usually fine until early October, by which time there should be plenty of ripe tomatoes! My smaller garden is producing almost as much as my bigger one, which is a bit surprising. (And so much for cutting down on the work! Ha, ha.) I love your efficient wardrobe! And am excited to see the beginnings of a wool quilt on your blog in the coming days!

    Have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Dear Jen, The USA ladies are telling me the same about tomatoes so it makes sense it is the same in your area...but I reckon you will still get them. Your harvest is sounding fantastic. Next week I am going to post a photo of the wools... (so far) and of the general goal so you can see as I know you love wool and you might like the idea. Cream cheese frosting makes everything better lol.. it is really good on zucchini cake! Have a very good new week! With love Annabel.xxx

  2. Annabel, What a lovely week you have had. Plus Tom is definitely going to grow up to be an experienced farmer, his inquisitive mind and all he is learning.
Your Op Shop shopping sounds amazing, so happy to hear you were blessed so well. It is wonderful coming home with a bounty from the Op Shop.

I had a hectic though slow week. Monday was Memorial Day here, it was the first we weren't having a cook out. Husband decided we would run to the grocery store, I had to ride one of the electric carts due to my ankle injury. I just wanted to get out of there because people would keep walking in front of me and it is hard to stop one of those things.

The town was over paving our road, so it smelled like hot asphalt for a day. Our tiler showed up and started the bathroom. So everything is out of the closet in there and the vanity, all over 2 beds and 2 dressers, it feel like everything is in upheaval. Hoping today things are grouted and I can at least put the closet back together.

I had cherries in frig that husband said needed using, so I made hand pies with them and with the pits and stems I made a syrup. It felt good using things that normally get tossed, making it into something delicious.
I had some leftover fresh lemon juice so I made an Italian Cream Cake with it. It's sort of reminds me of a heavy sponge cake. I felt good using up bits and not letting them go to waste.
I am still crocheting an afghan with my free to me yarn, I am finally on row 7 of 10. Three more to go before connecting and edging.

Hoping next week with travel I get to go to a thrift store and browse as I have a list to look for.

    Prayers for all Bluebirds.

  3. Another beautiful week for you Annabel ! You get so much done it puts me to shame. ! It's still cold here of a night also. I made pumpkin soup really thick to have with bread. I would love to make bread but I have a tiny kitchen no room for a bread maker. Little bench space.
I am going to make your cauliflower cheese this week. I developed a toothache but lucky my health insurance will cover the filling in full that's a blessing ! I plan to do a lot this week and will help a friend. Have a great week ! Sonia

    1. Dear Sonia, The soup sounds beautiful! I hope your toothache has been attended to. Dont let it go as bad infections are just terrible! I think the places I told you about would keep you in bread... but otherwise there is no reason you cant run a bread maker in the laundry or any other room that has a small bench space. Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx

  4. Husband and I were admiring your photos of Tom, we both agreed that you have an old soul there.
I have spent the last few days cleaning up hive equipment, I slipped an additional box onto one hive and gave all three some supplementary feed. Am hoping none of them swarm while we’re away on holiday.
I am amazed at how reasonable the prices are in the op shops in your region, I feel ours are starting to be too expensive although of course it could be that they are feeling the pinch rent wise.
My daughter was able to get a great bargain on Etsy, two almost new wheelchairs for her daughter. My granddaughter 17 next week was so excited, she is now able to transfer from bed to chair by herself and use the bathroom by herself due to having this new equipment, so important for her independence. Every couple of weeks granddaughter and I do craft together and husband spends time with our daughter to give her some relief from caring duties.
I look forward to seeing your woollen quilts, I remember seeing some made from jumpers a few years ago now and they were lovely.
We have our local spring festival start this weekend, it’s wonderful seeing all the daffodils in full bloom, every season has its joys.

The city op shops are not much good... but the country/church ones I still am finding good. How lovely you can chraft with your Grand daughter. Would she be able to knit or crochet? Having the wheelchairs is wonderful if it helps her independence.
Spring daffodils sound stunning! So bright and cheerful!! With much love Annabel.xxx

  6. Annabel you did great at the op shop. The wool alone was great. A couple years ago I went to a garage sale and under a table there was a grocery bag full of large pieces of Pendleton wool. No price on it and when I asked how much for the bag she said $5.00. Yikes! I had to get it. Well, I am going to make a quilt with it this winter. Just to warm but you got me motivated to do some winter projects.
Deep cleaning closets this week. A group of ladies that meet for coffee are doing a clothes exchange and what we don’t exchange will go to a church that gives clothes to those in need.
I have bananas to use up so (even though it’s warm) I’m going to make banana bread today. Just sounds so good.
Have a wonderful day. Phyllis from Oregon

Phyllis, I'm sure most of the people here don't realize what a find that Pendleton wool is, but I was born in Portland and spent 40 years there and I know! There is no finer fabric! My mom sewed all of our clothes and she loved working on Pendleton fabric--said she didn't even have to pin it before stitching! I have 3 or 4 Pendleton blankets and I love them.

    2. Dear Phyllis, I am guessing that bag of wool would be worth a fortune! What a find! I hope to have photos to show of what I am doing on Friday. Wool and actually any good fabrics have just gone up and up in value! I would be excited to see what you do with yours! With love Annabel.xxx

  9. Annabel I wholeheartedly approve of your icing to cake ratio!! That is a layer of icing you can sink your teeth into lol. I’m intrigued by the wool quilt you’re planning, I’m sure it’ll be fun finding fabric. It’s great when you find a fill-a-bag deal.

I bought some cotton yarn half price this week in lovely shades, $5 for 100g balls. Which means I have lots of beautiful yarn now that needs to actually be used!

It’s been very wet, windy and cold this week. It’s officially Spring but nothing much to show for it yet!

    Have a lovely weekend

    1. Dear Jen, Great find on the cotton! I feel the quilt I have in mind might be up your alley... I will post some photos of the end goal and where I am up to on Friday. Im not sure how the op shops are there.. but being a cold climate maybe there are old scarves and blankets to find and repurpose. If there is one hole in something here it is found in "dog blankets" but I wash the up and use for wool projects.
We have been the same... it was cold and wet the first days of Spring. But today Ive let the fire go out! Tomorrow I will dig out the ask and have a big clean up! With much love Annabel.xxx

  10. Dear Annabel, I love your words from Mother Teresa. It is the small things. And our home is so important. But of course we are tried to be led elsewhere. I love Lily’s nightie. Little Tom is amazing, he is a clever little boy and farming clearly is in his blood. Your wardrobe organisation looks fantastic. I love banana cake with cream cheese icing, my favourite. I bought tonnes of yarn this week to make a blanket, need to finish a tea towel first. I’ve been getting lots of papaya. Lots of love, Bridget

  11. Annabel you got so much accomplished and I do particularly like your last paragraph on Mother Therese and you are right we can all do small things with great love in the way we treat others and what we do in our homes to make things organised, tidy and clean. What a great job you did with the wardrobe inserts and it will make your linens so much easier to find now and amazing what we find tucked away in places we forget about. Your banana cakes are divine and I love the generous icing you have put on top. Tom certainly looks completely fascinated by watching the workmen dig the holes for the posts in the shearing shed too. How wonderful you found so many lovely finds in the op shops and the dress you made for Lily is so cute.

Well we both came down with the flu that was not covered by this years vac and boy were we sick. I am coming up for a week of having it on Monday but am on strong antibiotics and feeling about 80% better. DH was hospitalised briefly with seizures but is around 50% better than what he was.

This is where the doing small things comes in when you are not feeling well. So as I had a little energy I cleaned all the doors, door jambs, fronts of the kitchen cupboards and fridges/freezers, light switches upstairs and downstairs in the home to get rid of some of the flu germs. I also cleaned off the kitchen table, which tends to be a dumping ground, and put everything away and took off the tablecloth and wiped over the table. I then put a lovely colourful spring tablecloth on with lovely birds and flowers and put the basics back on the table. It looks so much better and cheerier. I also 3/4's swept and organised the tool shed and only have a quarter to sweep and organise. The back patio was getting a bit dusty and dirty so I gave that a good sweep and got off the cobwebs off the siding. Went through the walk in pantry room and got rid of any items that were out of date and then did an online click and collect shop to replace all the food and other items we used and topped up on items we usually use on half price or other specials saving 16.8% on usual costs or $58.36 to pick up next week.

Hope everyone has a good week ahead.

    2. Annabel, I am borrowing your last paragraph to share in my blog post for this weekend. I've given you full credit for your thoughts but it's too powerful not to share and too powerful not to post on my fridge to read over and over again this week as I do my work!

    3. Lol terricheney thank you and DH helped me strip the bed and wash and vacuum everything and change the bed with fresh linen. As a carer sometimes when you are the only one able to do things when your husband is really sick, you do what you can. In times like these if you can keep the home fires burning and just keep the inside of the home in order it is a major achievement. I am back to being healthy now and so is DH thank goodness after strong antibiotics but took 2 weeks.

      Lorna.

    4. Dear Lorna, Oh goodness your husband must have been so ill and you too. I hope you are both doing much better now!
You still did a lot! You went from flu to Spring cleaning bug I think! But things do feel nice and fresh and also... I agree about wiping things down etc after sickness in the house.
A fresh tablecloth works wonders too. I really hope you are heaps better. I need to do the same in my pantry. I am knee deep in changing freezers.... after this Spring cleaning and the pantry! With love, Annabel.xxx

  13. Hello, Annabel and Bluebirds. We just returned from a month in the UK. It was a lovely trip and met so many kind and lovely people everywhere we went. But now it is back to reality and making my own bed and cooking my own meals. Even with our family and neighbors using our garden produce I came home to green beans and tomatoes to can. So today I have canned the last of the green beans (7pints) and am cooking down the tomatoes to can some soup. There is still much growing in the garden. I have lettuce, spinach, green onions, kohlrabi and a cantaloupe waiting to be harvested. I harvested many tomatoes and a cantaloupe yesterday. The cantaloupe was a volunteer in the compost. I did a grocery shop to replenish as the cupboards were literally empty. I bought mostly fruit/veg and dairy. We have beef coming next month. Thanks to all for the encouragement and motivation. When we left it was summer. Upon our return we discovered it is fall here in the mountains. The cooler weather is lovely. Wishing everyone blessings for the upcoming week. Marley in the Mountains

My sweet husband is out of town this week, and I'm making a big push to get a lot done! I'm planning to cook a quadruple batch of scones for the freezer, clean for fall, and decorate a little bit for fall as well. Maybe in the evenings I can quilt a little? It's an ambitious plan but it'll probably get done! I'll be thinking about all you accomplish each week and that will spur me on!
