It feels like a month, at least, since last Friday. In life, and in the world, so much has happened since then!
Last weekend I was visiting my younger daughter and her family. While I had a major town to go to I went to Aldi and a couple of stores and stayed overnight so I had time to do extra things. I don't drive at night if I don't really have to as kangaroos and even deer are on the road.
Well... it was a lovely visit and although I hadn't thought of it several stores were having big end of financial year sales. Accidentally my timing was brilliant! One shop I really like had a huge sale and then several shelves of goodies on clearance. I got so many things for my present cupboard and the most expensive was $3. Just beautiful stuff. Useful too! Another store (Smiggle for those who know it) also had a big sale and I put away a few birthday presents.
Firstly, I stocked up on laundry pods which I would not usually buy but they were 1/3 the normal price due to being cleared because of new packaging. So that felt like a bit of a treat and I am set for a long time. I buy a pink body wash/bubble bath from Aldi that I love and got 5 of those.
In the thrift store (on the way down there) I found a boys Katmandu water proof jacket, a cardigan for Lily and a pale blue vest I think Harper will be keen on.
I took Lucy a lasagne and so later in the week I thought to make some more for some meals and a re stock.
I replaced the one in the freezer. Made one for Chloe... she can get 10 serves which covers two dinners if she adds a side salad or garlic bread or such.
I made another with gf pasta for Mum. The next day when it was cold and set I sliced it up... I kept two serves for myself... and Mum got eight. I pack them up into meal size portions and freeze. Cutting and wrapping takes a little while but that is 10 meals and so handy!
We both thaw them and then wack them into the air frier for a quick heat up. 😊
My other bake up was a chicken creamy pasta sauce that everyone loves and that also sorted me out for a couple of nights.
I completed my second quilt block. I think I went too complicated on this one and the star doesn't stand out so much. But I like the colours.
I have chosen the fabrics for my next square. I am itching to cut it out and get going...
I am going to cut it out carefully so that the roses feature. It is really exciting to see how it turns out...
Tom came over to help while Chase and Lily had their after lunch sleeps. We had already hatched a plan. It was his Dad's birthday. We made a double batch of Chocolate Brownies. While it cooked we played with Sparkie.
When it cooled I showed him a trick... he shook the icing sugar all over the cut out and when I lifted it up he thought this was particularly clever.
I like this almost zero effort way of making a cake look pretty. Then we carefully tied it up with ribbon.
As you can see Tom is proud of it! HE had to carry it to the car and HE had to take it in to show Mum before Dad got home.
After this achievement it was time to work outside. The plan was to catch the three fluffy bantams and move them to the big chook yard. We decided now they had grown they needed much more space. Tom got the wheelbarrow. He loves the wheelbarrow. I got the cage. I showed Tom my method to catch tame chickens. He was in charge of opening and holding shut the cage door. So my method is to use some bread as bait and to put my hand in with the bread. Then I count ONE, TWO, THREE and grab a chicken. They don't see it coming. Tom thought this was very clever and said I was a good chicken catcher. So when we had all three I shut the cage properly and Tom wheeled them up the hill in the wheel barrow to the chicken house. I had a couple of turns but he did most of the way. The chickens were hanging on for dear life I think.

When we got there we took the cage inside the coop, opened the door and put grain out where they could see and they popped out all on their own. Success. I have to repeat this with 9 others next week as I am simplifying some of my routines.
Then Tom helped the helpers and we checked the big bonfire going. As we left Tom said he could sweep out the workshop for me. He isn't five yet! I said I thought he had done a lot of work and it was a great day and we should take the brownies home for Dad. 💗
After that day the dog was worn out. She had followed the chicken catching, the wheel barrow and other adventures.
I felt the same actually.
We had more rain... and a storm. The local town even lost the jetty! It was dramatic! So when there were moments of sun Chloe rugged the kids up and got outside.
I am the same. If you can get outside you do! But if you can't well then it's a great time to bake, sew, crochet... so many good things.
Today was sunny and beautiful. Since the rain this sun will help the grass grow. And now we see more rain is coming. This is fabulous!
In a big improvement I now have starlink! I no longer could count on either my landline or mobile to actually make phone calls. I already know you must be able to call 000. So now I have starlink. I don't much care for actual phone calls but in an emergency I need this. The bonus is now my internet is ten times faster!!
Last weekend the world news was quite terrifying. It had been bad enough to mention last Friday then the weekend! 😭 One stage Mum said she was going to have a bath and go to bed and she wished she could take a valium. So I am thinking she wouldn't be the only one! I was reviewing my fuel storage and lists.
Last Friday I said just keep on keeping the home fires burning. Add something extra if you can. That doesn't have to be anything huge. If you added one bag of rice to your stores as your one additional thing for the week then that is good. Small steps add up very quickly. They really do. Maybe you got ahead in the next size kids clothes, one or two items. Or shoes. Or planted veggies... added to your fabric stash.... They are all blessings!
I have an extra post to publish, The Comfort of Routine. The last thing we need is to lose the plot. We keep things as lovely as we can, count every blessing and if we can add a couple of ducks (like Laura) or build up the gift cupboard (like Jane) or make jam to add to the pantry (like Lesley) then it is a bonus worth celebrating.
One day this week I arrived at Chloe's and the kids were dancing. Lily really has it going on as a dancer I have to say. They were dancing to "Ive got joy joy joy down in my heart." Watching Lily cracked me up and all week long that tune has stuck in my head! I've been singing it to Sparkie. She has joy in her heart I can tell you, she is bursting with joy. 😊 Having some words of encouragement to sing and work to does wonders!xxx
annabel, your choices for the next quilt block is great, your star may stand out better if you could choose a solid color for it, perhaps the darker shade of green that is in the rose print. when i took some quilting classes the instructor told us to pick a busy print that we liked then pick several smaller prints, dots ect. in the colors that are in the busy print and also a coordinating solid. dark rose might also look pretty. i hope you fall in love with quilting as i have, it is so much fun to take scraps and make something beautiful. my first project was a placemat and after that i was hooked. that was 40 years ago. enjoy your new hobby. bonnie in southern pa.
ReplyDeleteDear Bonnie, Thank you for your encouragement and tips! Wow you have a lot of experience and still loving it! Yes I agree I like it to take scraps and make something amazing. I dont really understand cutting up perfectly good yardage and sewing it back together lol.
DeleteNext Friday I will show you how this one turns out. With thanks, Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, you are a very good chicken and children cathcher!!
ReplyDeleteIt was a joy reading your words and seeing the pictures. Tom is a great helper with a big heart and nice smile, Lily is a charming beauty and Sparky extra cute with her litle face and big eyes. Loved everything about today*s post.
The last two weeks were quite busy here, at work we are in full summer season. I attended a wedding and a baptise ceremony in our extended family and, still we had some fun, but our society is very diferent and somehow split after the last months social crisis. The best place for me is at home, I guess, where my best (furry ) friends are.
Because on July 1st we were anounced of growing prices on electricity, fuel, taxes and the whole chain after that (everything will have higher prices) and also after all the news in the world I did a stock up on some pantry items at discount prices or with electronical coupons, like pasta, beans, flour, cooking oil and lots of cat and dog food. Toothpaste and toothbrushes, soap, shampoo and underwear were at good prices. I have planted more cucumbers after May weather distroyed everything and they look quite healthy and promising now.
I added to my flock two more ducks, because one of the ducklings I bought proved to be a young male, so I thought to add two more females. I hope it will be alright. We have a heatwave and egg production is a bit slower but still going.
In spite of the hot weather in the evenings I am crocheting little squares for a Christmas cabin log style blanket and when I have time, during the day and out in the good light I embroider something as a present, also for Christmas. Hand made are the best!
In the garden the best are the berries - I already made strawberry jam and blackcurrant jam and cherry jam. Yesterday I picked the gooseberries but it is just for eating fresh. I harvested mint and elderberry flowers and dried them for winter tea.
Wishing everyone a nice weekend and sending love from far away, Laura_s_world from Romania
Dear Laura, I am glad you were able to stock up so many good things. Being hit with higher (again) electricity, fuel and taxes... it seems never ending and very discouraging. Also... even here so far away... this issue of differing opinions/division is a thing. This last week when under pressure of so much happening I noticed people really getting angry and upset. I thought mmm is this a barometer of things to come?
DeleteI am thrilled about the ducks! I hope you get eggs or ducklings whichever you choose! I do remember when you had slugs in the yard. I bet you dont any more!
I love the sound of your Christmas log cabin blanket and all the beautiful berries too! Have a lovely new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Hi Annabel
ReplyDeleteIt's so lovely to see the photos of Tom, he is so pleased with the big present of brownies and he will remember how to do that simple decoration for the rest of his life. Sparkie looks adorable curled up sleeping.
Your lasagne is a blessing to the family.
It's been a good week here.
I was determined to set aside time for sewing and I've made good progress on a cot quilt for a friend's baby.
I've spent time planting up pots on the patio and renewing compost and tidying up. More to do but getting there. My husband has been propagating lots of plants from cuttings and some were a bit overlooked in the greenhouses so I planted some up in bigger pots on the patio. We've planted seed for spring onions and picked lettuce, broad beans, strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, gooseberries and lots of sweet peas and dahlia for the house.
Cherries are very expensive but I found some on a deal and we'll eat some fresh and I'll freeze some for pie fillings in the winter. We don't go out to eat much these days and I know how cheering it is to have homemade fruit pie. My stock up was bars of simple soap and I batch cooked chilli. I made chocolate chip fairy cakes, Bluebirds save so much money cooking from scratch, a small lemon drizzle loaf cake at the cooperative market was £4!! And I do mean small!
I was rooting through a cupboard and found some nice wooden Christmas tree ornaments I bought in a sale way back and they gave me an idea for an easy to assemble Christmas gift for friends, this has kick-started my thinking about homemade gifts and I'm putting together a list in my notebook, just simple inexpensive ideas.
Looking forward to reading everyone's comments.
Penny in the UK
Dear Penny, I am taking notice of the sizes and prices of things in shop as you did with the little loaf cake. One muffin, one slice of cake... mostly the prices are a shock. I love your ideas list and truly some nice presentation with homemade goods and you have great presents. At one time I lived near someone with a Holly bush (tree?) so I was able to tie things up and add a sprig of fresh Holly. This looked good! Maybe with foodie gifts I could do fresh bay leaves since they also are expensive?
DeleteYour garden is really producing a lot! I can tell it is a very busy time! Your baking all sounds yummy.
The only way to sew I think is to be determined to get even 10 minutes one way or another! I want to start my new quilt square tomorrow... I have it cut out.
Well done on all the work with pots and the greenhouse. I am eyeing pots I can fill and my compost pile is looking very healthy.... thinking of Spring. Have a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
That big smile on Lily's face just made my morning! I love a joyful child and want to to all I can to keep them that way :)
ReplyDeleteDear Kathy, I love a joyful child too! Keeping them that way forever is the goal. My Nana was a joyful person all her life. I try to be. But it is a serious goal! With much love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI haven't thought of that happy song in years. My Mom used to sing it as she worked around the house.
ReplyDeleteI worked out some swaps with our neighbors. We have lots of peppers growing and they are over run by zucchini so we traded. They have lots of tomatoes ripening and so we will trade our bread for them. A win for us both.
That is fantastic trading Lana! How beautiful too with such fresh produce. Doubling your variety as you go! xxx
DeleteA lovely post, Annabel, full of joy and optimism. I am amazed by the things Tom can do and he isn't even 5 yet! Also, I think the pink fabric will really set off the quilt square and I can't wait to see it.
ReplyDeleteI had been wanting a small CD player. Now that CDs are all but obsolete, they are hard to find. Then I found the alarm clock/radio/CD player that belonged to my son when he was in college 25 years ago. It is perfect for my kitchen and I shopped at home first, so my cost was $0. I am not much for TV but having music I like (olde time rock'n'roll and folk-rock from the late '60s-70s) on low makes life a little less lonely.
Best wishes to all of the Bluebirds. Stay safe.
--Maxine
Dear Maxine, I am not for tv either but nice music playing that is uplifting to you is a very good idea. How handy to have the clock/radio/cd player all in one. I bought DVD players for the kids when they stay here so I ca play all the old movies. They have loved this!
DeleteI hope your new week is off to a good start! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, what a beautiful post. I am so impressed with Tom. His Mum and Dad are doing an amazing job. I think he sounds like a chip off the block! Hard working and caring. I love that he made brownies with you. It is beautiful how you made those lasagnes for the family. Sparkie is so cute, seeing her sleep after her big day is adorable. I have been feeling like I’m not doing enough. But you are right the little things matter. This week the thrift store was having 50% off, I was quite shocked at some of the original prices. Things have gone up, even at thrift stores. This reminds me to be wise with our money. Today I’m going to garden with my new shears. And drink tea and crochet. lots of love, Bridget PS I’m happy to hear there has been rain
ReplyDeleteDear Bridge, Thank you! We have more cooking planned! You are doing enough just keep going. Always watch for opportunities! Yes some of the thrift stores have become ridiculous. But I a sale or sometimes a bag sale... you can do well. Other things might be rummage sales/garage sales etc. I keep a close eye on market place too! Drinking tea and doing some crochet sounds perfect to me! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteTom is a hard worker. He honors the name of his great grandfather. He will always remember all the things he did with you and cherish the memories.
The world continues in an interesting chaos. It is comforting to know that God has it all under control.
With much love,
Glenda
Dear Glenda, Thank you! Yes Dad would be so proud of Tom and Tom reminds me of Dad daily. He was born ready to work and is very generous. Day to day I dont know what the world news will hold but I do know God is my rock. I hope your week is going well! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteHello Annabel and Bluebirds 👋 It was good to be away on holidays, but so good to be home too!
ReplyDeleteI will be taking a leaf out of your book Annabel and trying to do some batch cooking this week to fill our freezer. Our boys demolished everything while we were away LOL
Sounds like you scored some great bargains at the sales. You are always thinking and planning ahead. That’s something I would like to improve on. I tend to fly by the seat of pants a lot of the time!
Your quilt blocks are coming along beautifully. I love making quilt blocks but I’ve never finished a quilt. When I get to the quilting part my sewing machine is not happy! It doesn’t cope with the thickness of the fabric, even when I err on the thinner side! So I end up screwing up the project and hiding it in my cupboard 😏 I hope to see how you quilt your project at the end, I might learn something.
Have a lovely week everyone
From Cheryl 🪺
Dear Cheryl, I know when I get back from a trip it seems to take a week to catch up. Refilling the freezer is a good goal. Ready meals are always very helpful. Lists and planning do help. I was born planning I am pretty sure.lol. But if we can see a train coming it is time to plan to get off the tracks. This is my thinking. I know Spring is next so I am planning....
DeleteNow with my friend who is teaching me how to make a quilt.. she does not use a sewing machine at all for quilting. I thought of the idea to send a quilt off to someone with a quilting machine but here at least that is a huge expense. I was shocked. So that is out. My friend does all quilting by hand. When I get up to this stage I will share what I learn. I expect therefore I will have very simple in the ditch quilting not a fancy design! But I will be happy with that. So get your quilts out... unpick the quilting you didnt like... go back to the patchwork and batting stage. We are going to get all these quilts into use/gifts /service! With much love Annabel.xxx
What an amazing little fellow your Tom is - and what a worker! That photo of Lily is so cute - can't believe how much she has grown.
ReplyDeleteWhat great timing that you were able to get so many things on sale - always great to stock up when you can!
It is extremely hot here - in the 30's but feeling like over 40C with high humidity. The only good news is that they have had some much needed rain out west which has helped mitigate the forest fires situation.
With Canadian produce now appearing on the shelves I am doing my best to freeze some of the fruit - mostly strawberries and rhubarb at the moment. Just popped another couple of trays of strawberries into the freezer. I have a few cucumbers that I am going to turn into pickles later today and I've already cooked a tray full of chicken breasts - if I use the oven it is very early in the morning as my kitchen faces west and gets very hot in the afternoon. I will put some into the freezer and use some for a big chicken salad that will last a few days - I also plan on making a nice pasta salad with tortellini, pesto, broccoli and grape tomatoes. That way I just add some greens and I'm set for some easy meals next week.
Like most of you I watch for any sales and then restock accordingly - this past week it was cans of tomato paste - some tetra packs of juice and some canned veg. I am also rotating through my pantry so used Spam and cans of tuna for meals last week. I cook a lot in the Fall & Winter but give myself some time off in the Summer - aside from batch cooking trays of chicken. I eat a lot of salads and sandwiches and as much fresh fruit as I can manage - the bonus is - I usually manage to lose a few pounds without even trying!
Have a wonderful week Annabel.
Dear Margie,
DeleteI really dont like the heat, especially high thirties and forties. Your fresh strawberries sound beautiful and your lovely salad. I dont like to use the oven either in summer where I can avoid it. It was great to get the tomato paste and juice and stock up. Eating fresh stuff through summer is very healthy for sure.
I am sorry to hear there are wildfires again. I hope maybe there can be more rain to get them out. This is our summer nightmare too! With love Annabel.xxx
Annabel I am so glad you had some rain that is fabulous and hope your grass grows well for pasture for the cattle. Hoping you were able to get enough hay to tide you over for the cattle and if not there is a organisation called rural aid that may be able to help you if needed.
ReplyDeleteTom is such a good helper for such a young boy and clearly loves to help and a mean feat to push up a hill with a wheelbarrow that is almost bigger than him. Your quilt blocks are beautiful as are the meals you share with family. So glad you were able to pick up so many specials for the present cupboard and staple items for the household too.
This week we concentrated on topping up the fuel jerries we had empty before the prices went up another 6c per litre so we filled our machinery fuel jerries along with a few 91 fuel for our cars too so we are right for some time. I also realised we were running low on fuel doctor which is an additive to put in the fuel to preserve it for a year that you put one ml per litre of fuel in each jerry. Boy that had gone up in price as I had bought some a couple of years ago for $80 a 5lt bottle and now the stores here are charging $210 per 5lt container. I managed to get 2 x 5lt containers of fuel doctor on ebay at a cheaper price and took advantage of codes for another 25% off to pay only $126.97 per 5lt container for a saving of $166.06 on usual prices.
In the firewood department we started to split and stack firewood we cut a few weeks ago from a 10m eucalypt tree a friend asked us to cut down as it was hit by lightning. We are half way through and think it will give us around 2 cubic metres of firewood to use for next winter. We will cut some more as we have seen a couple more trees fallen in the area due to storms. That bought me too chainsaw chains as we were running low on them and I managed to pick them up on ebay for $9.07 ea and I bought 9 and I know the local stores are charging $26 - $46 for 1 chainsaw chain so that was another huge saving.
Hope everyone has a wonderfully frugal week ahead.
Lorna.
Dear Lorna, Thank you! Once we had rain I soon had enough pasture to not need hay. We just made it! I did graze the whole driveway and around sheds while waiting!
DeleteWell done on the fuel stock up ad stacking the wood. From memory you worked hard last winter too and collecting and stacking wood. People are charging $450 for a trailer of food now here. If you see fallen wood to collect it is worth gold in my opinion. It is a great asset to have a dry place to tack all the wood. You will be well ahead. Also cutting and stacking wood is sure good exercise!
The chain saw chains were a bargain too! I must check that I have spare chains...
Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, Tom I think will be a great cook like you when he grows up ! What a helpful little boy he is ! And gorgeous lily ! Growing so fast ! Your lasagne looks delicious ! Your talents are amazing ! And also the quilt is gorgeous ! I'm so pleased you got rain ! It has been extremely cold here in Sydney. I am not a fan of winter esp getting dark early. However I have been making tuna bake and soup. Have a lovely week ! Love Sonia in Sydney , Australia
ReplyDeleteDear Sonia, It is a bit grim when it gets dark so early. Tuna bake and soup sound just perfect. Now I know Sidney has extreme weather and hope you are ok. Such a wide area is getting hit hard! Keep warm and out of this storm if you can! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteA friend from Church recommended your blog to me and I have really enjoyed reading through all your writings. You are an amazing woman.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you have been getting some rain. I live on the Mid North Coast of NSW and we are still recovering from severe flooding, with more rain coming this week.
I am planning to take advantage of the EOFY sales tomorrow and purchase a new fridge and freezer. I've been saving since Christmas and will bite the bullet and purchase them and hopefully save some money.
Have a great week, Megan.
Dear Megan, Welcome! I am so happy to have you here! I want to thank your friend! I see the weather could be intense as I saw the news this morning. Yes it is a really good time to buy your fridge and freezer. I would ask for a further discount or delivery because of buying two items! It never hurts to ask! I hope you get just what you want. Then you can swap over to saving for something else or maybe Christmas. I hope you dont get flooding ... I also heard about bad frosts... this is another blow if on the land. Thanks so much for commenting, with love Annabel.xxx
DeleteThis post made me smile Annabel! I can just imagine how happy Tom must have been to give Dad his present. Your lasagne cook up is so helpful to your family. And the quilt blocks are very impressive! Great timing with the sales.
ReplyDeleteWe have started school holidays and it is the best! My son suggested we do a MasterChef challenge in pairs so each pair will prepare lunch, dinner and dessert on their day. It should be fun.
I’m wanting to really get the house functioning well since we’ve been in it a few months now and know what could be improved. I also want to walk everyday, have some fun outings, and bake and sew with the fire going. I love the winter holidays!
Corned beef was the cheapest I’ve seen it all year so I bought 12kg of it. It’s one of the best slow cooker meals due to such easy prep. I also tried a new shredded chicken recipe in the slow cooker and everyone enjoyed that.
I love reading your posts each week Annabel, and it is such a treat when you post an extra one. They are such a beautiful reminder of how much good there is in the world, and how much we can influence our family’s wellbeing. Thank you for sharing and inspiring.
Have a lovely week
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen, Oh I am loving the Masterchef challenge! Great idea! You could make up a few mystery box challenges. That would be fun and keep them busy! mmm may possibilities there!
DeleteIt is true that you have to live in a house for a while to figure out how to best set things up. Holidays are a great time for some re arranging!
What a good buy on the corned beef! Yes that is such an easy slow cooker meal. Thank you so much for your encouraging words Jen. I really appreciate that. Enjoy the holidays and make special memories! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteSo good to see all your accomplishments! Thanks for sharing about your adventures with Tom. Baking and chicken catching!
I was blessed with a box of fresh broccoli! I traded it for 2 dozen eggs. I gave some to friends and family. We enjoyed it steamed and in a salad with bacon. Yum! I blanched much of it and froze 9 gallons worth. It sure pays to barter!
I have been deep cleaning while my 2 middle daughters were in Guatemala
. They arrived home Saturday morning. I'm so glad for them as they witnessed several people accept Christ as Savior. They were able to shop then bless several families with food and necessities.
God is good!
The Lord bless you all as you keep trusting Him to guide you in these times.
Love, Leslie
Dear Leslie, Oh wow what a wonderful trade! All that fresh broccoli is beautiful! And you made the most of it all! It sure does pay to barter. Your daughters had a great adventure! What an experience! They had great success too! I bet you are glad to have them home! What a great week! With love Annabel.xxx
