Feather your Nest Friday. 13th June, 205.

Last week we got the rain water tank in... and Saturday the rain came!  It was one insanely wild, wet, windy and stormy day.  I never got tired of watching water go into the tanks in the back yard.  The paddocks were drenched.  No one could really believe it!  Text messages were going back and forth comparing how many mils of rain each of us had.

There was nothing to do but be hauled up inside, keep the fire going, bake and snuggle the puppy. 😊

I made a giant batch of Pasties.  This is the tray for Chloe's family with man sized ones and child sized ones.

I got 23 so I was really pleased.  Some made it into the freezer.

That evening I was asked if I could provide a meal for a local man in trouble.  Yes,  I could.  Two pasties, some relish and a lemon pie from the freezer.

One of my handy cardboard box lids, lined with paper,  was my tray.   This is why we have emergency meals!

Also I made a double batch of gf scones.  Some for Mum and some for a friend.

And today Tom helped me make two tray bakes of meat balls, cherry tomatoes and capsicums.   I pour pasta sauce over the top and cheese.   I have enough for two nights.  Tom took their tea home and was proud to have made dinner.

We did meat ball maths.  How many meat balls could Lily eat?  He thought one or two. How many could he and Chase eat... he thought 4 each.   He said four for Mum and one hundred for Dad.  haha.

Then I said I could have three but I wanted to have two dinners.....   so we counted them out to be enough then added some spares.

This all melts down to delicious molten cheesey goodness and served over pasta it goes a long way too.

With the indoor weather I finished Lily's dress.

It is a warm soft flannelette and double thickness bodice.

Now I have some lovely cottons to make this dress with short puffy sleeves...

I have all my scraps and remnants out and grouped into colours I like...

A couple of sweet op shop finds sit in amongst my colours.  I got this little bluebird...

Many of my remnants are very old, never washed and were 50c.  Some are quite generous pieces.  The bits large enough for a dress or nightie for Lily I stacked separately ready to cut out.

Some are just dreamy!

I have been learning the actual price of brand new quality fabrics.  So I have increased my efforts to collect.  This week I was able to go thrifting with friends and found two pieces beautiful cotton with a silver shimmer thought it.

These were brand new (yet old!) also!

I finished off a blanket for Mum with an edging...

I was given the gift of four pure Australian wool blankets.   I washed these two up in homemade wool mix.   They are huge!  Larger than queen and slightly smaller than King.  I am told this is an old size they used to call Prince.

Anyway they are divine.

The third is drying near the fire now.  I am thrilled with them.   A brand new pure wool blanket is hundreds now.

I was given generous gifts of potatoes, onions, wine and cheese!  Wonderful supplies.

Sparkie is really learning a lot.

She brings back the ball.  She tells me when she wants to go outside.

She has made friends too and gets very excited to see her certain favourite people!

Today we had bon fires.  There have been several beautiful sunny days.  This is helping the grass grow.  More rain is coming... so today was a do everything outside that can be done day.

So much firewood has been cut from fallen trees.   Lots of stuff that is too large to handle and not suitable has been cleaned up and burned.   The driveway is looking neat and tidy.  Plus grass can then grow.   This fire will go a couple of days I think.   Another bigger one is out in another paddock.    I have wood lined up at the back door in a big box because rain is expected tomorrow through to Tuesday!  This could potentially fill all my tanks!

Tomorrow I want to have a pasta sauce simmering and make Lasagnes.  And maybe cut out some first quilt blocks from my fabrics.  I have no idea how many blocks I can make from what I have but I can get started.

Many of us will be daunted by the news today.  Just keep the home fires burning and doing all the things to build your nest.xxx

  1. Annabel, What a lovely and productive week you have had.
Lily looks so happy and the dress is adorable. I love hearing you have rain and your tanks are filling up and the grasses are starting to grow.
I love your fabrics. Your collection is so beautiful.

I had a busy week with visiting tile stores for tile for our bathroom floor, going to grocery stores for their sale items, gas in vehicle. I don't know how i fit in housework, laundry, baking. It was great seeing I accomplished so much including making appointments and catching up with medical files.

It feels like some weeks we have no real control of, though we get to accomplish a few things on our lists.
I have been crocheting and baking and with Father's Day here in the US on Sunday I will be cooking and baking a bit more to celebrate together.

Prayers for safety for all Bluebirds.

    1. Dear Rosanne, I know your Fathers Day celebration turned out very well. It is hard to get work done at home with a lot of appointments etc. I have four days home right now and it's fantastic to catch up and get stuff done. Im so glad you are crocheting up a storm! We did have more rain too, today was heavy showers on and off. Have a good new week! With love Annabel.xxx

  2. Dearest Annabel, you are so generous to cook for so many people but also for that man in trouble. That warms my heart !!
A icy blast has hit here in Sydney colder than any June I can recall. I see many homeless in doors and in tents in the park. One woman I saw in a doorway on a freezing night ! My heart sank. I will find some blankets and give them to her. No one in Australia should be living like that !
I think I may take her some soup also.
What beautiful baking you have been up to ! I love how you help Chloe with meals. Tom is learning a invaluable skill at his age ! And boy has Lily grown ! Mum used to make little outfits for us like that and knit our jumpers and cardigans too ! Your puppy is also growing !
I would love you to post your meatballs bake recipe. Is it a mix of pork and beef ? As I don't eat pork or veal.
My cholesterol is being watched so I have to have the leanest beef mince which even at ALDI is now $9.
I would love to make your wool wash mix , but can I do it in very little space ? And how many bottles do you need ?.
Thankful for a warm house, food, and basics. We are so blessed.
    Prayers for all bluebirds.

    1. Dear Sonia, Cold is awful. I cant imagine the homeless in the cold. When I stayed in inner Sidney a few times I saw a lot of homeless. Like everyone had a regular spot in a doorway or alcove.
You can make meatballs from whatever you like. I get the ones from Woolworths with carrot and zucchini in them and simply bake them wit cherry tomatoes. I top that with a tomato sauce/pasta sauce and cheese and bake.
If you use lots of veggies it would be very healthy.
The wool wash fills a few jars. It is a beautiful gift. Also it keeps a very long time. Jars are best as it sets solid.
Keep warm and cosy in this cold blast! With much love Annabel.xxx

  3. Hi Annabel,
I’m so glad to see the rain come for you! That takes a load off your mind in multiple ways, and is an answer to a lot prayer. I love to see your bonfire pictures. We’re not allowed anything more than a gas barbecue outside because of the dry climate. I live on prairie land at about 6500 feet altitude. As summer turns to fall, the grass dries to an orange color and at that time I’m very thankful for this rule. Your meatball bake looks really yummy. I think I’ll try it soon. Have a good week. Love Mel.

    1. Dear Mel, We have the winter season for the fires... through Summer and Autumn we cannot burn like this.... fires are out main hazard here. But when we have our window of opportunity it is clean up time!
The meat ball bake also works with a block of feta cheese. It is so versatile and easy! With much love Annabel.xxx

  4. Thank you for your faithful Friday letters. Love the dress you made Lily. Reminds me of the little dresses my Mom made for our daughter. The puppy is adorable. Our Rosie was a terror when a puppy but is so loving and a real comfort to me now. I am allergic to cottonwood trees so struggled with that this week and the usual CFS. If anyone else copes with that would welcome suggestions. Tom is a sweetheart and learning so much and a nice helpful guest. LLove all your op finds and I miss being able to go. Have another amazing week! See you next Friday! Nancy

    1. Dear Nancy, Thank you for your kind words! I can only thing re the allergy ... do you run an air purifier? And.... this may be of no use but before we moved here... I thought I might have chronic fatigue or similar... but I didnt I wasn't getting enough oxygen and when I went on to some asthma puffer suddenly I had energy. And next... my aches and pains and fatigue also disappeared the I went totally off wheat. Now I know this is far out there but I will share it with you just in case as I would love something to be a help.
Tom really loves to help and I think he will be doing all sorts in a few years for me! I will pray your op shopping days will return! With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Dear Annabel
Lily is such a sweetheart. Tom will be a very practical fellow in so many ways with the education he is getting!
Isn’t the rain beautiful? I had a small bonfire yesterday before the next rain arrives.
Those pasties look very yummy and I may be inspired to make some up. I’ve been making lots of soups and baking batches of shortbread to give out to the elders.
I’m sure the elderly man was delighted to have such nice homemade meals to sustain him.
    Stay warm.

  6. Hi Annabel
Your post is a tonic! Lovely photos of the many good things in life, grandchildren in pretty homemade dresses, home cooked food, thrifted fabric, a puppy with a ball, woollen blankets etc. I'm happy you had such a nice week and there might be more rain coming. Your emergency freezer meal for someone in need was such a good demo of why this is a good idea.
We've had a lovely week with daughter and granddaughter staying while SIL was away on business.
We picked big bowls of strawberries, some raspberries, lettuce, redcurrants, rhubarb and flowers for the house.
I freeze some of the soft fruit , even though it doesn't keep its shape it is still nice in the winter months to have strawberries stirred through yoghurt etc.
My batch cooking was coronation chicken and I stocked up on cartons of long life orange juice.
I need a raffle prize for a fundraiser and found a beauty in a charity shop , a big presentation box of toiletries, beautifully presented and new.
I visited the supermarket first thing and found some great yellow sticker deals for the freezer. It's the same old, same old some weeks but it makes me happy.
Some friends came over and we looked around the garden and I saw it with fresh eyes, it's easy to take our surroundings for granted, good to be reminded of our blessings.
Good wishes to you and all Bluebirds.

    1. Dear Penny, Thank you! How nice to have your daughter and Grand daughter for the week! I bet they had as great a time as you did!
Just beautiful that you have so many berries coming in! I agree o the fruit... bringing it out in winter is so good.
Wonderful that you found a raffle prize! And your bake up sounds delicious.
Im sure your friends loved your garden and visit. Yes we need to look at things with fresh eyes. If I have been away and come home... then I see how things really look. Mostly Im pleased and appreciate the nice setting here/view/garden as Im seeing it more how others do! When normally I just see the jobs to be done!
I am glad you found some good deals. Ours are getting hard to find. With much love Annabel.xxx

  7. Dear Annabel and Bluebirds,
Yay! So glad the Lord answered many prayers for rain. I appreciate how you share your accomplishments each week. Lovely fabrics, blankets, and such a sweet dress for Lily. And Tom cooking with you... priceless! Little Sparkie appears to be a fun and loving companion.
My week was full. I weeded morning and evening several days. Sewing, baking, and deep cleaning filled the rest of my days. Appointments on Thursday, but I took my hand work with me. I even completed a crocheted cowl for a Christmas gift. Life has been a challenge as my husband had to cut back on his hours in order to qualify for Social Security. Thankfully, I had a neighbor approach me about purchasing 3 of my hens. He offered $15 a piece! So thankful I hatched out chicks. I have eggs for sale, also.
On a fun topic, I challenged myself to learn shuffle dancing. I get a great workout and it is strengthening my left hip and leg.
    Love and prayers,

    1. Dear Leslie, I love to watch music and videos of shuffle dancing! It looks so much fun. Very cool! It is terrible (and same here) re having to cut back work hours to get SS. Hens are worth a lot. Hatching chicks is a pretty good thing to do! And eggs of course as well.
The weeding would soon be adding up! Well done on completing a Christmas gift too! I love getting things into the present cupboard. By the time December comes around I am always surprised what I have in there!
That was a busy and good week! With love Annabel.xxx

    1. Dear Missy, Frosts are very hard on everything. I am sorry you are hit with them. This has been our fear with rain so desperately late. But we have kept getting some days of sunshine and so far things have grown. My raised bed of potatoes though all look burned off and went black so that was a frost for sure! Seeing green has had a big cheer up effect on everyone. I go for little drives just to admire it! With much love Annabel.xxx

  9. Thank You, Lord, for the rain! We continue to pray that your rainy season will bring all that you need for your cows and garden beds. I agree with Penny--your blog posts are a tonic. We've gone from snow in May to HOT days. Our projects are coming along nicely; 6 of our 7 raised beds are planted and the eggs are incubating! We'll have Delaware chickens soon and (we've decided) a rooster so we can breed our own. God bless the woman doing this 1st incubating and brooding!
Annabel, your pictures and weekly wrap up truly soothe the mind and soul. What amazing fabric you have! Lily's dress is beautiful and just right for such a beautiful little lady. The blanket you finished off for your mom is lovely. What a precious, gift, too of the wool blankets. And your food always looks delicious. I know I have that out of order. It's heartwarming to hear of other Bluebirds successes as well. --Elise

Thank you so much for the prayer. We continue to have rain and more is forecast. How exciting to have eggs in the incubator! Also the raised beds almost all planted! That is great work.
Thank you for your comments. I think we have to look at the good parts of our week and feel we achieved things, otherwise its an endless list of things we havent done yet! I like how if we keep at it things add up. Consistency is a big thing and not giving up!
I hope you are having a good week. With love Annabel.xxx

  11. What a lovely dress for Lily!! Her smile is priceless. What a cutie. Your cottons are beautiful as are the things made by the diligent hands of your mother and yourself. I'm working on a baby blanket (100% cotton; crochet) and weaving/sewing in a thousand 😀 ends of a big blanket (100% alpaca; crochet too). Who can resist Sparkie's face? So glad God has sent rain to your area! Have a good week! Esther 🌷👏
