For such a time as this. Cheap and Cheerful.

Everyone is stressed.  Everyone has tightened their budgets.  To me it feels like there is a lot of pressure on us all.  I have always had the theme of feathering our nests.  Making our homes a safe and happy sanctuary from the world and a place to escape stress rather than a place that causes it!

Now happily many things that are just lovely, that brighten spirits and make us feel a little bit more comfy are really easy to do and don't necessarily cost anything at all.  I will share some of mine but these are personal things and you can adapt for yourself and your family.  They might become mini projects or even little surprises you can do for your family and friends.

I love it if my bed side table is set up and has the things I need.  A drink. A book. A reading light.  A flashlight. Anything I might need in the night. Bonus if it looks pretty or has a flower. 💐

For a child... you know they are going to ask for a drink.  Set up their bed side with their book and book mark,  their own little area with everything they need.  When they settle into bed everything is right there next to them.  I try to help them then teach them to create a little nest of their own.

It is obviously psychological but tea tastes better to me from a bone china cup.  A cup and saucer is just nicer.  So is a crystal glass.  They both come from collecting in thrift stores so they don't cost any extra. But they make my day nicer.  They seem special.  When Grandkids come to stay I let them use special glasses and cups and saucers. THEY think it's special.  My Grand daughters know how to tell crystal from glass.  This is a thrift store skill you teach them young! 😊

On this... use the nice plates.  Set the table.  It costs nothing to set the table and use what you have to make it look nice.  Your meal might be very simple but it will seem so much nicer and sitting at the table and talking to each other without the tv blaring will make your day a lot better too.

A clean and organised car.  Something about this makes me feel somewhat on top of things as I head off somewhere.

Also... an organised handbag with everything you need.  I can reach into my handbag and find... my pen, my notebook, my glasses and so on and I feel kind of like I have it together and not in chaos. (Even if this is a welcome illusions haha!)

My diary/planner... opened and I can see what is on this week,  what is coming up... do I have a gift to wrap?  Are things under control?  I just feel better.  There is a theme here.. I am trying to avoid feelings of panic!

Near the backdoor I keep a couple of baskets.  One has things that I mean to send out the door with some one,  returns etc.

Another has things to donate/give away.  These two keep things heading in the right direction.

I keep the project I am working on in a basket next to my chair so it is just there to pick up when I sit down.

Set up a little spot to sit outside.  It might be on the veranda or under a tree.  A place to have a drink, write or ready, enjoy a coffee with a friend.  Getting some sun and fresh air,  listening to the birds... this is a lovely little break.   You can make this even nicer if you have a birdbath of some kind nearby.   Taking A TRAY out to your spot in the sun comes across as a treat for yourself and maybe a guest as well.

If I create a few outfits and hang them on hangers where I can see them... I don't have to try and use my brain early in the morning before heading off to town or church.  This way I am more likely to wear something different or try a new combination.   This also costs nothing but it feels nice to set out feeling put together.

I write a list for tomorrow, the night before.  Again... I don't have to figure it out in the morning... I can just follow the plan.  I made the plan in two parts.... MUST DO and hope to do.    I also enjoy crossing things off my list. That is so satisfying.  But I truly get a lot more done thanks to lists.  This sees things achieved but the knock on effect is I feel good about it.

Plate up left overs so they look appealing and pack lunches in cute containers.  It's not really harder but it seems so nice.

Have frugal and helpful hobbies.  Being content at home with a project you are just dying to get to work on is wonderful.  I will go like stink to get some sewing time in the afternoon and crochet in the evening.  These are just my happy place/happy mental spaces.   And I produce stuff!  But the contentment factor.... it priceless.

If you really like your tea or coffee then set up a little station so that it is a joy.  Add some treats as if you are making your drinks at home you are saving a fortune over buying them out and so if some vanilla syrup adds happiness to your life then maybe that little thing is worthwhile.

In summer make up jugs of water, slices of lemon and keep plenty of ice ready.  Iced water that looks pretty is beautiful on the table, costs near nothing and does everyone good.

Bake something.  Look at what you have and cook.   Even if your ingredients are flour and milk you can make something.  Baking makes little into much, makes your house smell beautiful and is like a gift to your family or friends.

Again it is psychological but a cake on a cake stand suddenly seems so special!

If you possibly can keep a few chickens.  Two or three are often enough.  They are so economical because with a small number three quarters of their diet will be food scraps, weeds and things you once threw away.  They add joy to every day and you get eggs!

Make your bed comfy.  As comfy as you possibly can.  My mattress + topper + underlay + blankets across my feet + sit up cushions + beautiful pillow + pretty pillowcases + a hot pack!  .... it is a princess and the pea kind of thing but these comforts are pretty much life saving to me.  My bed is the place I retreat to.  A good sleep is the most valuable thing. Whatever you can do to each bed in the house and your own more comfortable is worth doing.  When you have no underlay a wool blanket will also work.  An extra quilt will work too.  Whatever you have, see if it will add comfort to your bed.  Like babies like to be swaddled many children benefit from being tucked in.  I understand it, that feeling of being wrapped.  It's not for everyone but it is something to consider.  And it is also why so many adults sleep better with some weight on their feet... and this is me.  Yet somehow it took me a long time to figure it out!

Become good at least one soup.  I have two main ones and now and then try another but then come back to these... Pumpkin and Chicken soup... like the germ killing, immune boosting chicken soup.  They are both very comforting and nourishing.

Books.  Between the library and thrift stores always have a book that you love.

Add .... find a couple of you tube channels that are just your cup of tea. Your people!  And then add ones who are doing things you would like to learn.  You have so much enjoyment and inspiration lined up right there.

Say no to things that you know you are really going to dread.  And to things that you know are going to decimate your budget. Saying no is free and sometimes saves you a fortune.  EVERYONE wants your time and money.  People are even willing to tell you how to spend them!  It is easy to get sucked into a vortex of unrealistic expectations especially around birthdays and weddings...  It is perfectly ok to wish people love and happiness without wrecking the month over it.

Flowers always do me good.  If there are flowers I can pick I am filling vases!   They just lift my spirits!

When flowers are not plentiful things like pinecones, gum nuts,  reeds,  pretty dried grasses etc all are beautiful free little bits of nature in your home. Autumn leaves, sea shells, drift wood...

Play music that makes you happy.   Nothing tragic... uplifting!

Get out in nature. Walk.  Soak in fresh air and sunshine.

Have a treat.  I like to walk around the garden centre and have a coffee at their outdoor tables and chairs.

Photos of people I love, out where I see them everyday, also bless me.  So do Bible verses I want to remember always.

Have dreams,  plans and goals.  We must have these!

Faith.  Faith is free.  The ultimate gift is free.  This would be my number one thing that I could not live without.  Joy that fills your heart.

My Mum... her bliss is her garden,  books,  knitting and a cup of tea.   What are your cheap and cheerful treats that make you feel better every time?  What are things you do daily that make life nicer?  What can we do for others that might make their day be a little bit better?   It really is the little things that count.   This reminds me of feeding the birds the crumbs from your table.  Completely free beauty! xxx

  1. Love your post Annabel, what a lift, and yet we can do these things so cheaply. You are such a blessing to so many 🌾🐚🌸

  2. Annabel, What a beautiful Blog Post.
Making our home a haven I believe is our priority. With all that is happening in the world, we want someplace to "escape" to.
My dinner table has our good china, (purchased at a warehouse sale) Crystal glasses (from thrift store), real napkins (thrift store). Candles are set on the table. A meal is leisure and enjoyed be it leftovers to full fledged meal.

I try to have something baked for husband to snack on, buying from the grocery store can be expensive even at purchasing at half off. my pantry is my best friend when it comes to cooking and baking. We always look for sales and mark downs to keep it stocked, though it seems lately it is getting harder to do.

We extend meals as far as possible, one chicken breast will serve us both for dinner, another will make chicken salad to go over a garden salad or in sandwiches. Always plating on nice dishes to make the presentation look special.

I keep a basket of cotton yarn near my chair, just in the mood to create. My laptop sits on end table near me as does some books and writing paraphernalia, my journal is there also. as we know keeping track helps. Planning a week ahead, seeing what we need to prioritize.

With Spring here my favorite place is our sun room, we eat meals out there and it is a peaceful place to sit, read, listen to the birds or watch the deer. I have been know to fall asleep on the sofa out there.

We need to find our happy place, we need to create it. It brings joy to us and contentment.

The beds in the house are covered with linens, comforters, quilts and even afghans to cover with. Each bed has at least 4 pillows for guests to chose from to use. Water and a glass are set up on nightstand with tissues, a book, a candy.
I bathroom I have a basket with essentials for guests. Along with crocheted wash cloths, body puffs. I have candles in rooms if anyone wants soft lighting.

My family room furniture has blankets, afghans for each sitting area. In winter it is so comforting seeing everyone snuggling under what they call "their blankie".
I have a coffee bar set up with coffee, teas, hot cocoa and above in cabinet are snacks/dessert items. No one need worry about being hungry or thirsty.

When it all comes down to it, just making your home comfy for yourself and others makes a big difference on relaxing, feeling welcomed.

  3. Thank you.

I just woke up from a bad dream. Picked up my kindle, and didn't like the page I'd been reading.

Even though I save your blog for Friday, I thought I'd reread last week's entry.

    And what a surprise!

It reset my brain from that dream.

    Thank you.

  4. What a lovely blog post! It's a good reminder that little touches matter! I agree with you that we should make our homes comfortable and comforting!
It's a little thing, but I make myself a "cold brew" tea in the warmer months. Every evening I pop a tea bag into a glass water bottle then put in the fridge. When the heat sets in the next day, I have cold tea! I also do my laundry early morning or late in the evening in summer. We really only have high temperatures about two weeks out of the year here, so I plan to sew during those weeks when outside is way too hot!
Thank you for your encouragement to keep our homes happy and comfortable!

  5. A beautiful and practical post. Thank you 🙏

With it being Autumn going in to winter, I like soft lighting, either a small lamp or candles. They always make the small dark corners of a room seem more inviting and warm.

  6. What a beautiful post, Annabel. There is so much thought behind this post, and so many wonderful ideas that just really resonate with me. To me, spending time and thought on these kinds of things is keeping our minds on what is true, lovely, of good report, etc., as we are told in the Bible...and how much better our lives and those around us are when we take time to feather our nests like this! It's crowding out the awful with what is wonderful (and so doable!). When everyone is gone for work, I love to eat my lunch at the table with a chapter of whatever fiction book I'm reading, and it's amazing how refreshing that is...it seems like pampering, and my mind is not on worries or the news...I always look forward to this "event". Also, taking the time to go and pet our kitties and have a little pet love. For me, making sure I take the time each day to get in some "on purpose" exercise is also a type of pampering...either going for a lovely walk outside and enjoying the birds and flowers and fresh air, or even doing exercises to a workout video...I always feel so much better. Having the supper started when others get home so that delicious smells greet them. Making the bed each day...my husband always comments how much he loves getting into a made bed...it makes going to sleep so lovely. Spending at least 15 minutes each morning with my Bible, a cappuccino, and quiet. These are just a few thoughts off the top of my head, but I love what you wrote. Cheerful sometimes has to be intentional, and it makes a difference! This post was just what I needed today!

xx to you!!! Jen in NS

  7. Thanks Annabelle for your insiration! As always an encouragement to me. My current little, and not so little things that bring me joy (but no pain to the hip pocket). Celebrating others joys with them, by a word of encouragement. Taking time to make a cuppa and sit and enjoy it. Brewing a cup of tea in a little tea pot and using a vintage cup that appeals to me (blue willow). Or using a thrifted coffee press and making real coffee. Vacuum sealing my extra coffee beans to keep them fresher for longer so they are still enjoyable. Using a travel mug when heading out so I can enjoy a nice hot drink while out and about. Making a coffee or iced coffee for my teenage children. Acts of service are so special to those around us, someone taking the time to use their hands and time to perform a service for us shows love.
Using white linen on our bed and keeping it snowy. Ironing it for extra crispness and sleeping pleasure! Making the bed each morning so it looks inviting when passing by throughout the day.
Putting homemade quilts on the beds. They just seem cosier.
Making meals and baking when children request favourite things, the same day if I can. Why wait till a birthday? 😊
Taking care of my skin in this drier weather. Using a skin cream that is nice and does its job (not an expensive one).
Preparing for winter by looking for lovely suitable things for the family as I find them (usually Op shopped).
Making an effort to wear something nice to Church and encouraging my daughter to do likewise to show appreciation and consideration for those around us. A heart attitude of love for others and not of vanity.
Wearing my Grandmother's broach on Mother's Day to Church. Reading the family tree, memoirs and practising thankfulness for generations gone before us, without whom we wouldn't be here today without.
    Pondering God's promises.
Burning some essential oil (favourite lavender and peppermint) to lift my mood. Made pot-pourri with spices and dried apple for the lounge room.
Making an effort to keep the home neat and cleaned regularly to show appreciation and care for our family members.
Decorating with family heirlooms (not necessarily costly) and thrifted treasures to make our home cosy and welcoming. Latest finds - Edwardian wardrobe on marketplace and a gilt framed oil painting of a country scene in warming Autumn colours from local thrift shop (was damaged but fixed now).
Having lots of pantry staples on hand feels so cosy to me, having it ready when needed, no rush or panic to pick up something we're out of.
Watching the birds in the trees. Listening to them sing.
Enjoying time with our pets. They bring such joy.

  8. Dear Annabel, what a beautiful post ! I also love being tucked up tight as a adult even and love being on my bed. These last few days I've been spending a lot of time on my bed with early winter sickness. I plan on making my grandmother's winter veggies soup today. She always set the table with her best tablecloth and linen! It makes such a difference ! I am so very sad to hear about the passing of your dog. I know how much that hurts when my Ruby passed I was depressed for two years ! I adopted a new Bichon frise (like a fluffy white poodle) seven years ago and now we are both happy. Sending love, Sonia in Sydney

  9. Annabel, what a wonderful post! It is something I need to embrace. I have never done very well with self-care and I desperately need to start. Thank you for some good ideas to get me started.

  10. What a lovely bonus post Annabel. I love all your ideas and as I was reading through was mentally ticking off all the things you mention that I do. Small things I would add is TLC for houseplants, my indoor orchids don't take much pampering but I enjoy doing it and I plant up pots with bulbs which I can bring indoors and enjoy when they flower. Not everyone loves animals but grooming our dogs and playing with them gives us great joy and walking them is good for us. I am learning a language online and the resource is free or you can pay a small amount to have it ad free. ( Duolingo). Trying to keep the old brain going! We have a bird feeding station set up where we can see it when sitting in the kitchen. We keep binoculars and a bird identification book to hand and this simple cheap pleasure is lovely in the winter months. We have a butterfly and moth ID book to hand for the warmer months.
I have a small amount of seasonal decor which it gives me pleasure to set out, pretty spring plates, ceramic pumpkins for autumn, you know the type of thing. Charity shop only and not crazy amounts!
I LOVE your sentence that saying no is free! I am trying hard to practise this, not just to stop the budget being decimated( although that's important) but to stop pushy people from shredding my peace of mind.
It cheers me enormously to think of you in Australia and all the Bluebirds around the world keeping their homes bright and welcoming. Thank you.

  11. So uplifting!! Thank you. To my surprise I already do most of this. One of my new things to do is watercolor on my deck. It is so relaxing even if I am just swatching.
Many years ago I went antiquing and now I have delicate cups and linens.
Two things that bring me joy are taking art class with a local organization. Little Egypt Art Association offer classes and groups for free or a very low price. The best part is socializing with like minded people.
The second thing is the art gallery in my bathroom . It is the not small white wall. People laugh but I see it a few times a day. In the past it held seasonal and inspirational pictures. Now I try to put up my own works.

  17. Dear Annabel (and everyone),

This is a timely, lovely post and a good reminder. One thing I have started doing is lighting a candle, putting on some nice music, and setting my table for one with pretty dishes for dinner. I sit so that I can look out the bay window onto my garden and the birds/butterflies/bunnies that visit my yard, and it is a nice way to wind down each day. I also really like youtube music channels that pair soft piano music with pretty scenery, and will put one on while I'm cleaning the house or baking, just for a nice atmosphere. Other things are having my dad over for tea and home-baked snacks, reading a good book with a cat on my lap and the window open for some fresh air, starting herb plants from cuttings in my kitchen window (they smell very good and are somehow cheerful growing there), and puttering in the garden - transplanting things, potting up starts for friends and neighbors, even deadheading the flowers so they produce more - it's all pretty, fun, and free.

  18. I think the one idea that describes all these things is "taking the time". Taking the time to set your side table, have a cup of tea, iron linens, etc. Immersing ourselves in taking the time is what gives peace and joy to life I think because it slows us down.
