Feather your Nest Friday, 9th May, 2025.

I am happy to report we had a little bit of rain!  This started the week off well!  It just was such a boost.  Everyone was rejoicing!  I went for a drive to look at the rain and see puddles. 😊

Today I did the grocery and errands run.   It was a really beautiful day.  And I had thrift store finds!  Despite my car being loaded up I managed to fit in this gorgeous stool....

It had to go on top of groceries but I was not leaving it behind and that was that.

This week I had the cows grazing the driveway.  This fed them for two days.  I still needed to buy more hay.  I HOPE this is the last and the grass will grown now.

I was very lucky to even get this hay as it is a hot commodity.  And... so is water.  Across the state people have run out of water.  Even Chloe and her family are low.   I was able to donate 14000 litres....

This topped up their tanks and I am so glad!

Speaking of hot commodities....  I saw eggs are $15 a dozen and my friend told me about a farm near her that is selling eggs two days a week.   A queue of cars lined up to buy .... this queue stretched for two kilometres!  And... they sold out.   I am collecting 18 or 20 a day!

When we came here the farm was set up like most... (in the district) which is a homestead,  a jackaroos quarters (single mans cottage) and a managers house.  Usually these are nearby each other like a little town.  There might be a shed, hay shed, shearing shed etc.   Lucky for me the homestead is wonderful!   The jackaroos cottage was a complete dump and it was suggested to me that I burn it down and get rid of it.  I asked a builder his opinion and he agreed it was a dump but it was a structurally sound dump! haha!  So in 2020 the plan was to renovate it to a liveable state.   I hate posting ugly photos but I will post one which pretty well represents the state of the whole place.

It was pretty unappetising and made me feel sick!   It also stank.   So in 2020 this was every spare minute work.  Also later that year Dad died.  And of course the whole year was a barrel of laughs of lockdowns and so on.

Now you all know this became "the cabin" which is a man cave style camp/quarters and I have three guys who use it on an exchange basis.  Oh boy, this is so mutually beneficial to them and me!

The "managers house" was really not much better so it took a while to pluck up the courage to take this on as over all it was a bigger job.   2024 this became my goal.   Andy wasn't keen.  He asked why?  I said because we have to be good stewards of what God has given us and fix it up.  Also I knew sometime I am going to need it.   He asked why am I going to need it?  I said SOMEONE is going to need it.  I just don't know who but it doesn't matter we have to fix it up.

Then later in January Andy died.  For many months everything stopped and I didn't really function beyond the basics.  I am not going to recount those months as everything that happened I wrote an account of already.  It is too hard to remember those months.

Finally, later that year I got back on track.  I still felt God meant me to fix up this house.

It is still not finished but the kitchen is!  Also this is the best bit.

All the furniture came from my uncles estate.  I bought a new stove.  My helpers tiled using tiles from Andrews shed!  I had a professional do some flooring... most of the floors are wooden and fine but the kitchen needed a new floor and also the laundry floor was completely rotten so that you could actually fall straight through it!   All of that was cut out and replaced.

Now I am beginning to find out why this needed to be done.   There is still a lot to do but it is now mainly useable and not a health hazard!  Painting the outside is coming up which will make it finally look lovely!

I often have it where people say to me  "that sounds like a lot of work."  Well, yes.  But you can spend an hour watching Married at First Sight  (or insert some other vile sinful tv show) or you can get something done I guess!  I have had help and every opportunity add something nice or useful to these spaces I do.  It has taken a long time,  Rome was certainly not built in a day.  But I feel so happy with finally having an area complete!

My cook up was tuna mornay.  I made three trays.

And also... I used up the very last of the produce boxes putting a ton of capsicum and mushrooms into a beef casserole.   As it cooked down I kept adding veggies until the slow cooker was full to the top.

The beef was really tender.  I served it over mashed potatoes and since I ran out of room I did the carrots (also from produce boxes) on the side... plus peas.  This made so many meals and fed all of Chloe's family a huge meal as well.

Mum knitted a vest for Lily.  It as my job to finish off the neck and arm holes with crochet.

I decided to add a slight angel ruffle...

Mum must have been happy as she has given me a beautiful blue one to do the same only with "more ruffle."  😊

I am having limited success with peas and beans growing.   My broccoli is looking good though.  The weather is just weird.

I took limes to the swap table and got a whole ice cream container of cherry tomatoes.

I am not sure if the green ones will ripen  (I think some of them will)  and there are enough red ones to make up a couple of feta and veggie bakes...

And a lovely friend gave me five tea towels that were her Mum's.  💕  She knew I would love them!

So there were many good things this week and I'm grateful!  I hope we get some more rain soon.
How did you feather your nest this week?  We love to hear!  And it is Mothers Day this weekend!  The great irony with a Mothers work is that on one hand some things go unnoticed and on the other hand it affects the generations ahead.  How amazing is that!?  💕💕💕xxx

Oh, my! It all looks so wonderful! The little home transformations are amazing. I would be honored to live or visit such a place. Your guests are blessed! Right down to the rooster linens.

Roast and vegetables is one of my favorite dinners. We're warming up now so it'll be awhile. We're focusing on salads and summer dishes.

I love how generous you all are with your gifts of all sorts. The vest is darling and I love the shared labor. My mom and I used to do that with pillowcases. Id embroider them and she'd crochet a beautiful trim.

One of my dearest friends was 50 before she could got her own home. Her husband was a hard worker, but they had a special needs child and things went away from the plan, as we so often experience. Well, a generous relative left her a enough money to buy a home. And this is my point....She has the same philosophy as you, Annabel. She considers it to be such a blessing to have one that she is always working on something to make it better. Not luxurious, but better. And it's a small home in the city. In fact, she believes wholeheartedly that it's a sin not to. That if the Lord was kind enough to see that she got one, she would make Him proud. And she sure does!

    Blessings to you!!

  2. Hello Annabel (and everyone),

The kitchen looks great! Those extra buildings are such a good resource for you. Your food and the knitting/crochet trim look wonderful. Those cherry tomatoes will ripen - there are always some still on my plants when we get our first freeze and in a brown paper bag they will slowly ripen and become delicious. A very good week!

To be honest I have been struggling a bit this spring; this week would have been my 18th wedding anniversary and Monday will be one year since my husband passed. But, one day at a time, and I am actively looking for good things and things to be thankful for.

This week I found a few things at the thrift store (beautiful glasses for a gift, a few nice tops for myself), planted in my garden and picked up a few more plants to pot up my own hanging baskets this weekend (they are so expensive to buy already made up, and I have the baskets already), spent some time with my Dad, and had a few good freecycle and garage sale finds (a veggie slicer dicer, book/magazine rack, some silk flowers). The interior shutters are being installed at long last on Monday, so that will be exciting. Otherwise I plan to putter in the garden, try to finish my current stitching piece, and make good use of my veggie CSA box.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

    2. Dear Kathy, A year already.. this came around quickly. It was a year for me in January. I really dreaded the day. It became a giant hurdle for me. You have the added Birthday. After I did get past this hurdle I began to make a lot of progress and feel so much better. So I hope the same for you.
The shutters will be gorgeous! A slicer dicer is the best thing! I use mine everyday and for making pasties especially.
The veggie box is like a mystery box challenge and I cant wait to hear what you make! Well done on making it through this week so positively! With love Annabel.xxx

Your beef and veggies look so yummy! We are heating up here in midway usa, so I m finishing our baking for the freezer, summer yum s. 4. Dearest Annabel, it seems God has answered with some rain ! I will keep praying ! Eggs are so find here in the city. Sometimes I need to go to three or four stores and even then six cost me $8 or sometimes more ! I believe selling your eggs even making a deal with shops in town with your eggs could be really a blessing to extra income ! I'm sure you'll turn that run down quarters into something nice in time ! I also think if you place those green baby tomatoes in the sun on a table they will ripen. I also love those t towels ! Many people I know don't have t towels ! A beautiful thing to have ! Mother's Day I'm off to my mother's place for lunch together. Going out is just so expensive ! You can get out of even lunch at the RSL club for less than $70 and that's before a drink etc.
Your tuna morneys look beautiful as does the casserole to give to chole. The beautiful thing about cooler weather coming is I can buy corn beef for a decent price and it will do many meals with roast veggies. My Nana used to always have a big pot of.soup bubbling away in winter. A beef broth base and heaps of different veggies like cabbage carrots etc. a tummy filler before the main ! I know your also a big believer in that. When I make pumpkin soup I roast the cut up pumpkin and garlic cloves. Then I fry up onions and a good quality stock and add the pumpkin . Delicious !
I think Chloe could add risoni or even shell pasta to soup for her babies !! Such nutrition in that. And you can freeze it and just pull it out when needed.
With the price of even mince here I'm looking at ways to feed myself. In winter I do love a jacket potato with beans and cheese etc. Or chicken, or any number of things. ! I also love the recipe you posted a long time ago of zucchini, onion, tomato and top with breadcrumbs and a little butter and bake ! My Nana also used to make this. Delicious !
Have a good week. Love Sonia in Sydney

Risotto with the soup would be brilliant! I had not thought of that thank you!
Chicken and pork can be a lot cheaper. Just watch the good deals. Dont be afraid to roast a whole chicken as you would get so many meals, cold meat and then a huge pot of soup. The tomato/zucchini dish can have little spaces made with a spoon than eggs baked into it. This is delicious! For dinner or breakfast! Hope your week is going well! With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Dear Annabel,
I feel the need for a nap after reading all you've done.😅
So very happy you have been blessed with rain, and I hope more comes. We have had way too much rain in upstate New York over the past 10 days, close to 5". Everyone is praying for it to stop. The farmers can't get on their fields and walking across our yard feels like a swamp. Our temperatures are cool also.
I have been focusing inside. My husband brought the potatoes, carrots and onions out of storage. I canned 14 pints of potatoes and 12 pints of carrots. I'm going to dehydrate some onions, put some in the freezer and give some away. Everything stored beautifully.
I have planted 150 Patterson onion plants, Freckles lettuce, French Breakfast radishes and a row of Cylindra beets. The plants have to remain in the greenhouse for a couple more weeks.
Wishing all blue birds a week filled with blessings and peace.

  6. That is such a pretty little stool. What a great find! I love the little vest too. I remember my grandmother and great-grandmother knitting and crocheting cardigans for me when I was a child and my mother-in-law knitted beautiful things for my children. The most I can manage is a scarf!
I have been busy gardening this week. A lot of things in my Spring pots have died back and it is time for the Summer ones to take their place. Not everything has survived the Winter, so I have been getting rid of dead things and trying to reduce the number of pots I have. I am also eyeing up my herbs with a view to start drying some.

  7. Annabel the kitchen transformation is stunning! I know you don’t like ugly before photos but they help show what amazing progress has been made. The stool is gorgeous. What a find!

I’m on to the last 10 rows of the crochet blanket. It’s getting cold here so that’s a good incentive to get it done. I think I’ll make some washcloths for Christmas gifts after this as some quick finishes would be good. I bought some beautiful handmade soaps and bath bombs from a seller who is changing her business focus and they will be lovely teacher gifts with a homemade wash cloth. I’m also trying to be very disciplined about using up yarn rather than buying more. It’s so hard when it’s so pretty!!! But I have enough wool that I could make another full sized blanket, as well as plenty of cotton for washcloths so I need to make use of that.

Yesterday I went to buy some treats for my daughter’s birthday (7 today!!). At a clearance shop they had specialty cake decorating sprinkles and chocolate shapes etc at 2 for $2.50. They’re normally $6 each! So I bought far too many but will be able to decorate many cupcakes and cakes for months lol.

The cheapest butter you can buy here is now $8.29 for a 500g block. It’s ridiculous. Some are over $11. So I’m searching recipes that use oil and saving butter for things that really need it.

I hope you have a special Mother’s Day with some more rain as a bonus!

    1. Dear Jen, You probably have finished those last ten rows by now! it is cooling down here too. I think on the weekend I might light the fire.
Washcloths are good gifts... and before you said it I was thinking these would be good teacher gifts! Just perfect getting soaps and bath bombs! Last week in a thrift store I found gorgeous boxes soaps... inside were three individually wrapped soaps, very pretty. I had the same thought... to grab them and add one soap each with a wash cloth. Into my gift cupboard they went!
Happy Birthday to your seven year old. I remember when she was born! What a great deal on the sprinkles. Seriously some nice sprinkles make all sorts of things look special.
Wow on the butter price! It is about $8 here. I should check though as there are more expensive brands and I guess they are some horrific price too. I love butter. In cakes I do like oil... but I will only use olive or avocado mainly. A light tasting olive is good. My friend owned a cafe... Hilde. She made the best cakes and swapped oil for butter as the cakes would stay fresher longer.
We did get ten minutes of rain today. Not long but quite heavy! This was enough to be excited about.... but that shows how desperate we are!
I guess you might be on the blanket border? I hope to get to see it! With love Annabel.xxx

  8. Annabel, I loved everything about the blog this week, especially Lily's new vest and the before and after pictures of the cabin. What a fantastic kitchen! Maybe not perfect for a family that cooks 3 meals a day, but fantastic for hunters, vacationers, etc. A lot of thought (and work) went into that remodel. I also agree with you about stewardship. I can live without changing my house, but maintenance is #1 with me. I don't do well with things that don't work right!

I bought a rotisserie chicken from Costco this week. We ate it for one meal and I made stock in the Crock Pot. I froze a quart of what I call "soup starter" that includes the bits of meat and also a cup or so of broth for cooking. I plan to have chicken salad tomorrow but I'm still trying to think of something that will freeze well for later. If any of the Bluebirds have any ideas, please chirp right up!

The transformation of the homes is incredible and such a bonus. There may be a time when family or friends need a place to stay and you will be ready. I attended a Mother’s Day Mass at my grandson’s school with my daughter-in-law. The Priest spoke about how Mary said yes to Gabriel and that as mother’s we say yes when we become pregnant. It really resonated with me and was quite moving. The boys also gave us a Blessing and a rose which was so beautiful. 10. Hi Annabel
So glad you had rain! This is riches in a dry country, hope you have plenty more to fill the tanks. Your stool is so pretty , what a lovely find. I'm looking forward to seeing more of the managers house as you progress. I agree completely about not wasting time on those TV shows, there are shows on UK TV which are just vulgar degradation. How low can they go.
We had a couple of bedrooms redecorated a few weeks ago and I'm slowly replacing grotty old lampshades, curtains etc. ( The curtains were so old the sun had rotted them!) I bought a beautiful new pendant lampshade on a trip to a city with my daughter and got 10 per cent off. I've been searching charity shops and just not finding anything. Then my daughter and I turned out a big storage box I haven't looked in for ages and had some great finds! There was some pretty curtain fabric in a pink pattern which will go nicely in one of the bedrooms, a couple of vintage French pillowcases in blue gingham and some cute children's handkerchiefs. The money saved on not needing to buy new curtain fabric will be used for a couple more things to go in those bedrooms. Also there were several large pieces of beautiful upholstery fabric and one large bolt. My mother had stored these away and I had completely forgotten them, I guess life gets so busy we sometimes forget what is under our noses. As you say make the most of all our resources!
On a last note I'm stunned at the cost of eggs in Australia. Ouch!
Wishing you and all Bluebirds a productive week

  11. Dear Annabel and lovely Bluebirds, Happy Mother's Day! Your Mum's knitting for Lily is beautiful and I love the crocheted angel wings. The embroidered stool is realy my kind of thing! All your cooking looks great and thank you for posting the pictures of your buildings. It is such hard work and it is a good example for all of us. Also, glad you have rain! In my country we have big political and economical turbulences these days, prices have gone up madly so I did a shopping trip to top up the most used items for decent money. I have to be more cautious from now on! The little yellow ducks are more than ok, growing each day and becoming fluffier and fluffier and all my flock is happy and content with all the Spring and rain bounty. I did plant more beans, zinnias, rosemary, lettuce and parsley and I noticed many volunteers of small cherry tomatoes - this is my last year project, when I burried ripe cherry tomatoes in the ground, covered with dry leaves to protect them from frost and voila, I will have now around 50 new plants, if everything will be all right. Worth to try! Have a nice weekend, I wish you many blessings from far away. With love, Laura_s_world from Romania

  13. Dear Annabel, what a transformation this 'managers' house is undergoing!! It looks so inviting already, and I can clearly see all the work that has been put into it. I did have a little giggle, because I thought of childhood days when most little girls had a dolls house and would make things to decorate it...but you have a real one! :-) What fun.
Lily's little vest is adorable, and she will look like an angel. You and your mum are so gifted with things like this. :-)
My last week was all about deep cleaning major areas, organising the pantry, organising the preserving cupboard, restocking jars, planting seeds of snow peas, climbing beans, cucumbers, rocket, spring onions and LOTS of flowers. Our yard is alive with bees now, which is just what we need, and I'm especially loving the huge Great Carpenter bees that hover in and out of the massive Geisha Girl bush.
I'm also working on a few sewing projects to re-fashion some older clothes and make them 'newish' again.
Now a new week is ahead, and I'll be cooking to stock the freezer today (Monday), using up what's left in the fridges before I shop for fresh produce.
