Feather your Nest Friday, 2nd May, 2025.
It's May! Already! We are still having summer like weather (rather than Autumn) and no rain came ... so the bit of grass that came up is now gone. This is grim. Speaking of grim tomorrow there is an election in Australia. I guess I should avoid politics but I have never in my life experienced such an atmosphere of hopelessness. It is like do I shoot myself in the left foot or the right foot? Or will I be more creative?
Then I have to report... I always follow the local towns buy, swap and sell sites, market place etc. and as you will know, if you have been around here for more than five seconds, I love to thrift shop! I have been noticing a huge increase in what people are selling. A lot of things I didn't used to see ... ie five dollar items and things people might once have donated. Also things that are entirely unsellable because they are just past the point of no rerun... but they are trying anyway. This all is telling a story. There is an upside I guess, despite the indicators being sad. Recently I bought a fantastic generator at an amazingly cheap price because people were selling up fast. There is good preparedness stuff to gather.
After having school holidays last week this week was a bit of a catch up. And .. despite all the above points we still have to make hay while the sun shines! Each evening I still can easily come up with more than my ten things to be grateful for!
I got on with using up my boxes of produce. I attacked the pumpkin and sweet potato first. My biggest slow cooker was filled and as it cooked down I kept adding until it was completely full. Then I lifted out two cups of pumpkin and set that aside to make scones.
The soup turned out so well. It got shared around and was several lunches and dinners for me. I gave some of each, soup and scones, to Chloe.
When the kids were little they struggled with soup although they liked the taste. I told Chloe to make spiral pasta and call it pasts sauce as the pasta makes it edible with a fork. This worked!
Then next I tackled the eggplant. During the day I fried up a batch at a time. Then late afternoon I began a meat and tomato sauce with grated zucchini thrown in. When it came to assembling Lasagne I did two layers of pasta and one layer of eggplant per tray. My goal was to get as many meals as possible!
One was in my biggest baking tray which I would say makes eight generous serves. I got three all up and then extra pasta sauce to go with spaghetti.
The chickens are loving the weather and busy laying. This is so good!
I had a couple of days off cooking but this morning I got the mushrooms, onions and capsicums going with some beef. Again as this cooked down I added more veggies on top.
I have carrots but there is no room so I am going to cook up a heap of those and serve on the side with mashed potato. IF I have filling over I will make meat pies. Because... pies freeze are a whole meal ready to go! Oh, a pie with a mashed potato topping is the best!
I invested in a new winter dressing gown (thinking the cold will come eventually) and new leather boots, since I live in boots on the farm. We should, if possible, have back ups to the things that are most essential. My new boots become town/church and my old ones become farm boots.
In town via buy, swap and sell I got beautiful Agee jars. Also some books for Mum.
These are my favourite jars. I rummaged through my lids drawer and found a lid for each one! (And washed them up ready for use.)
My lovely friend came with the gift of cups and saucers...
Lily's blanket is coming along very slowly. I have been lucky to manage two rows at night. But now I am just going to aim for those every night and it will grow!
Only the gardeners will understand but I am so excited because today my helpers decided to tackle the goat yard. Trailer loads of the worlds best compost (complete with worms) have come out with more to go. I'm going to guess around ten loads.
We're experiencing the same increase in prices. One chain of charity shops here in Mid-Michigan has nearly doubled their prices. This week is city wide garage sales in our village and the one next door. Baby clothes that sold for 25 cents last year are $1 this year. Tables and racks are filled with women's clothes, some new with tags and there are shoes to match. People are emptying their closets.
ReplyDeleteBut, on the positive side I have my garden planned out and I'll plant everything today.
Candy
Dear Candy, It seems people are selling everything and anything! Well done on planting your garden! I hope it does really well for you! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteHi Annabel
ReplyDeleteYour cooking all looks wonderful and Lily's blanket is gorgeous, what lovely colours. Yes you're right, gardeners will understand the excitement over lots of compost! Gold for the garden.
It has been a lovely week, when our son in law has to work abroad our daughter, granddaughter and dog move in with us. Our daughter can manage the baby fine but the dog as well isn't easy when she's on her own and it's hot here for dog walking. We love having them here and it gives her a breather if we help out. I've done lots of cooking and we've had much fun together but I don't feel I got much done! Cuddling a baby and singing rhymes has been full time and after she's in bed I'm not fit for much. I don't know how I did it all as a young Mum. I need to catch up for a few days now.
We used more purple sprouting broccoli from the garden and pulled rhubarb and I cut some flowers for the house. I did a favour for a friend and she has given me a beautiful little posy vase as a thank you.
I redeemed some points from a consumer research panel I belong to for a new summer weight duvet, the weather has been sweltering.
Apart from that very little to report but I'm looking forward to getting back in a routine again.
Good wishes to all Bluebirds
Penny in the UK
Dear Penny, I think it's great your daughter and Grand daughter come to stay while her husband is away! You get extra time together and also they would be safer. What a great time! (Yes it is exhausting.. I dont know how I did it either!)
DeleteWow on getting the duvet through your points! That is awesome! Your garden is sounding good! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel, we have got a lot of heavy rain here in Sydney for the last few days and a sudden cold snap ! Out came through trackpants etc. a good dressing gown is essential many just turn the heat on but I think that's wasteful ! Your cooking is inspirational ! And it looks so yummy ! Your work on the blanket also is gorgeous ! I'm sure that pumpkin soup tastes beautiful too and great for the kids ! And all !
ReplyDeleteI make a roast pumpkin soup and garlic in the oven the onions and stock, and then blend it all up so good for you ! I went to the coffee shop here the other day would you believe their charging $25 per bowl of pumpkin soup !! People are struggling here too and esp those on pensions . It has got impossible to almost afford meat a tray of lean mince is now $9-10. ! However I made meatballs in sauce and made about six containers to freeze.
I will pray you get rain ! Lots of love, Sonia
Dear Sonia, Your pumpkin soup sounds so good and I nearly fell over at $25 a bowl! Talk about good motivation to make it! I know things are expensive but that even shocked me! Meatballs are really something you can stretch so making them probably still turns out to be good value. And they freeze as you say which is great. We all need to make simple meals and waste nothing. Have a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI completely understand on the politics. The world has gone mad! If we thought things were bad during Covid it is definitely more so now. There is so much advice on how to stock up and survive that it all seems useless. We just pinch pennies every day as best we can.
ReplyDeleteMy brother was a transmission rebuilder for many years and we always heed his advice to have our transmission fluid changed every 60,000 miles. That was done this week along with the brake fluid. Our 14 year old Honda just keeps going and going because we do the maintenance. It's worth having a budget to keep up with these things.
We met up with old friends we had not seen for 13 years. That was so nice and we all enjoyed the time. I find the thing that keeps us the most sane right now is spending time with others and realizing that we are all in the same place.
Dear Lana, This is a good point about maintaining things! That applies to so many things! It is lovely you caught up with your friends! I agree... chatting with friends is the best therapy! It is just lovely! I hope you have a good week! With love Annabelxxxx
DeleteAnnabel and all of the Bluebirds, I hope you are all doing well.
ReplyDeleteI bought ground beef for $2.98 lb. I don't really NEED more than what I already have in the freezer, but I'm planning a big cook up this weekend to include two meatloaves, a pot of chili and what we call goulash--beef, tomato and macaroni casserole. I always make a boatload and I will freeze what we don't eat. As a fairly recent widow (and I'm sure others can relate) there are just days when I don't feel like cooking. Those ready meals have been a lifesaver.
When I go out today, I'll be buying sour cream and Tillamook cheese for $6.99 for 2 lbs.
One of my rhododendrons in the front of the house died over the winter. Yesterday I bought a beautiful pink rhody for $35 at Wal-Mart. The one that died cost twice that much and wasn't nearly as big. I also transplanted a mystery plant (free!) in my back garden. That one was a lot of work because there was a big rock in the bottom of the hole and I had to fill the hole twice with water to loosen it. I only had to enlarge the rhodendron hole a little bit.
Today I am taking care of a sick daughter and a sick dog. Is my life fun and exciting...or what??
--Maxine in northern Idaho USA
Dear Maxine,
DeleteOh meatloaf! That is a good idea! I havent made meatloaf in ages. I do them in muffin tins so they are individual and they freeze well. Now I have sausage rolls, pies and meatloaf on my plan! Yes... there are days there is no way I feel like cooking. This also can happen though when we are tired, sick, running late... to anyone. So ready meals on hand are very important.
I hope your ew rhododendron takes off for you!
I hope your daughter is feeling much better and the dog too! Well they are both lucky to have you! With love Annabel.xxx
Muffin tins are a good way to go. Actually, whatever works well for a person is a good way to go. I use 2 lbs of meat and after I've finished adding stuff, I split the mixture and shape it into 2 loaves. I freeze them raw ( I prefer not to reheat meatloaf) and cook on a rack so the fat drains off. I will take a loaf from the freezer in the morning, peel off the wrapping (I use foil) and let it thaw on the rack. They are thawed by the time it's time to bake and they come out perfect. Each one-pounder will give us two meals plus a cold meatloaf sandwich or two (my fave).
DeleteI did the ground beef cookup over two days and ended up with 20 portions (10 meals for two) plus the one meal of goulash that we ate that day. I used a total of 6 lbs of hamburger meat for about $18. A lot can be accomplished by just cooking double when you happen to have something that freezes well. It makes me happy to go over to the freezer, open it and take a peek. Almost as nice as looking at home canned peaches for a week or so before putting them away....

As always you accomplish so much during the week!
ReplyDeleteWe too just had our federal election here in Canada and I cannot believe that so many people voted to continue with the party who has spent the past 10 years getting us into such a mess. It is a minority govt. so hopefully it will not be a full 5 years!
I have been on a re-organizing and cleaning spree - should finish everything by this evening. My office mate's daughter is trying to furnish a small apt. so they are coming tomorrow to pick up an armchair, 2 dining room chairs, an end table and a few other odds & ends. They wanted to pay me but I just want stuff gone so we have compromised on a couple of bottles of wine.
I also bought and put together 2 Raskog carts from IKEA as I wanted to rearrange things in the kitchen and I find them to be so useful I have moved a number of items from my pantry closet (along the hall) up to the kitchen as I want to make better use of all that stuff I've stockpiled. This has also allowed me to move a couple of small appliances to better locations where I will now be able to make better use of them. I am very pleased with the results.
I got lucky with some good prices (as much as 50% off on a few items) for non food supplies such as toothpaste, tooth brushes, floss, deodorant, shampoo etc. My laundry detergent was not only back in stock after weeks of not being able to find it but it was also 50% off. I bought 4 jugs and with what I already had, I am now set for the next year. It was tempting to buy more but I only have a small apt. so this does need to be taken into account. It was a good week!
Dear Margie, Well it's the same here. Apparently people want MORE and re elected the same old. I take a fair interest in USA and Canada so I have seen your new guy and he seems charming (not.) I am feeling your pain truly as is this some kind of coincidence we are both commonwealth countries and our Gov general has done nothing when laws have been broken... against the people. I guess I better stop talking!
DeleteThat is just lovely that you can help the mates daughter set up her apartment!
Very nice! Well done on your organising... I like your idea with small appliances...
All the items you stocked up on are great to have. That is the time to do it! Well done! With love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel,
ReplyDeletePrayers for your election...we had our federal election this last Monday, and talk about hopeless! Enough of politics. :( I am wishing I had that goat pen gold over here! My garden will be much smaller this year, as it will mainly be just hubby and I, and I have to get a handle on weeds. We are building 2 more raised beds, and only some garden will be in the ground...here's hoping for lots of production, just in a smaller space!
I have been cleaning out flower beds and getting them ready for spring. The daffodils are blooming, and I plan to bring some inside tomorrow to pretty up the house for dinner guests. My painting is going very slowly...not much done this week, as had to wait for some repair work to get done to trim before paint could be applied. I'll crack on this coming week, as well as continue with outside yard work. We were given 3 maple trees from friends at church, so we did get those in the ground this week...hopefully they "take" and make someone very happy with their shade some day!
Have a wonderful weekend, and hope you get some good relaxing time in with your crochet!
xx Jen in NS
Praying you will get some rain, soon!
Dear Jen,
DeleteIt interests me greatly that we are both in the same situation and both part of the commonwealth. mmm I am starting to wonder.
Truly... raised beds make life easier. I loved and admired your garden so much but know the work must have been massive. I think you can be extremely productive though in a smaller space. How beautiful to have daffodils! Maple trees would be just beautiful, I hope they grow for you too! What a very nice gift!
I kind of like painting in that it transforms things so much to pristine! But it's also a big job! I hope this week its going well for you!
My crochet is coming along now... I was a bit stuck but now it's growing! Have a good week Jen! Love Annabel.xxx
I’m sorry you haven’t had rain yet Annabel, I really hope you are blessed with some this week. All your cooking is lovely and I’m pleased it means you get some nights off! Lily’s blanket already looks l beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI was inspired by you starting the blanket last week so I pulled out the one I started last year for my daughter to see how far I’d got. I was so happy to count the stripes and realise I’d done 67 out of 90 needed!! Yes!!!! So I’m adding to it as well. Hoping to finish in next couple of weeks. Up to 76 now. I was dreading finding I was only about halfway lol.
I have set a goal for May to add something to the freezer everyday. So far I’ve added apple muffins and a gf chocolate cake.
I found some genuinely excellent deals this week while grocery shopping and honestly, I overspent but I haven’t seen prices like that for so long that I thought it’s be silly not to.
Yesterday I rearranged my pantry (we just kind of shoved things anywhere when we moved in!) and I’m feeling positive about being able to bake or cook to add to the freezer with what I have.
It’s sunny today and I have mountains of washing so that is my goal for the weekend!
Have a great weekend
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen, Wow you really dont have that far to go on the blanket! I also have a boys blanket on the go and I havent checked how much Ive actually done but finishing off a blanket feels fantastic! Im doing better on this one now. Stripes are motivating because I like getting to the next colour change!
DeleteI think if you found really fantastic deals you were wise to invest in them. Seriously. Especially with a family. I am glad you did find such good prices!
What a great May challenge! I love it! Muffins are good as they can be breakfast or lunch box or snack or desert! Im guessing by now you have added more. I am thinking of doing sausage rolls... they are a crowd pleaser and freeze well too. Hoping you have a good week! With love Annabel.xxx
Hello Annabel and Bluebirds,
ReplyDeleteLike you, we have been having an extended Summer...that is until yesterday! I felt a chill in the air for the first time, and I liked it! And this morning it is even chillier! Autumn has finally arrived in the Northern Rivers!
I had a chuckle at the 'which foot to shoot ourselves in' analogy, it feels exactly like that! I intend to be creative ;)
Something that we have experienced about selling goods is that people aren't buying the big ticket items. We have been trying to sell our caravan since before Christmas, and it still hasn't sold, despite dropping the price a couple of times. Admittedly it is a big family van that requires a big car to tow it, but we aren't even getting many enquiries. People are being cautious and rightly so.
A wonderful use of your produce as always, and also I have compost envy LOL
My energies this week have been aimed at preparing for a big 4WD adventure to Cape York in June. I am pressure canning meals, freezing some meals for our boys who will be fending for themselves at home. Vacuum sealing dry goods to take with us etc. There's a lot to do! Also I have been enjoying my garden so much and trying to do a little bit every day.
Enjoy your week everyone
From Cheryl x
We’ve done the Cape twice…. Happy to tell you the spots we liked etc. its been ages but may be able to help with planning if this is your first trip. Hugs. Missy
DeleteDear Cheryl, In another way I thought your caravan might sell ie for someone to live in. In bad times a caravan is not a bad option much better than homelessness. I have seen people advertising caravans to live in on site down here in SA.
DeleteYour trip sounds very exciting! I think having something wonderful to plan and look forward to is very good! I hope you have a great time! With love Annabel.xxx
Annabel, I rarely comment but never miss a post!!!
ReplyDeleteGluten doesn’t agree with me, so I got a Nutrimill grain mill and buy einkorn and soft white wheat berries and make my own flour as I need it. It’s worked wonderfully! Commercial gluten free flours raise blood sugar higher and longer than refined sugar and with diabetes also in my family, I don’t need that!
Anyway, thanks for all you do - it’s a big deal and so appreciated!
Carol
Dear Carol, Thank you so much! A grain mill is wonderful. I have heard of einkorn and friends having success with that. I am not good with the wheat... for me it is aching pain... pain in my joints with wheat and also soy. It took me most of my life to finally figure it out. I wish I would eat no flour at all, it's my downfall!
DeleteThankyou for always being here! With love Annabel.xxx
Oh my goodness, Annabel! Your industriousness never fails to amaze me! How wonderful must your kitchen smell and how lucky your family is to have you. The colours on Lily’s blanket are simply beautiful and your stitching is so uniform and precise. What stitches are you using for the blanket? It will keep her warm and become an heirloom. We had no internet this week, quite a shock, a problem with the NBN which our provider kept thinking it was with us. The tech said it was definitely NBN and it was exceptionally difficult to get through to the providers and explain the issue, my husband was very stressed and nearly wanted to take up smoking again. All fixed now, I really love being connected! Good thing I was at work and avoided most of the drama! We will head off soon to vote. Labor for our family, we are dedicated to the Labor Party and do not want nuclear power reactors. Later we have my grandson’s Rugby game, he is in the First 1V, so we are very proud of him. Much love to you, Jennie💙🤍
ReplyDeleteDear Jennie,
DeleteAbout everyone I know had internet problems in the last weeks including me. Its horrible! It is interesting what you say... I am not keen on nuclear either.
The stick used are all trebles, in groups of three over two rows then continuous for two rows, it is called Cupcake by Attic 24 with very easy follow along instructions. Well done to your Grandson! With love Annabel.xxx
Thank you, Annabel! I love Lucy @attic24. I have so many of her yarn packs and must really crack on with finishing my youngest grandson’s baby blanket! I really love your work and use of colour💕
DeleteI love your tea cups! I have the same ones!
ReplyDeleteI noticed about 2 years ago that the grocery stores near me (USA midwest) were raising prices on their clearance items or perhaps I should say they weren't reducing their clearance items by as much as before. And I have noticed the thrift shops have also raised prices. We used to buy my grandchildren's clothing from thrift shops but now with careful shopping at regular store's clearance racks we can often get nicer clothes with cheaper prices. I still buy from thrift shops but I I'm not finding as much as I used to.
Dear Margaret, Yes re the thrift stores. I am down to several country ones only because of this issue with many. Many I used to go to I had to give up on. But as you say... during sales and clearance great deals can be found! There are still means and ways! I often find something really good but too big... in which case I still buy it and put it away until it's time to bring it out! I have a good stash! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel, your week was very productive. I like the creativity you put in making all those yummy dishes, the blanket for Lily and the compost! Pure gold! We, too, have elections today (it is Sunday morning here) and the atmosphere is pretty much the same with yours. I am terrified about the interference of russia again and pray and hope for the best. My phone is broken so I write with some strugle but - my garden is starting looking beautiful, with tomatoe plants, chilly peppers, and a lot of pumpkins and sunflower seedlings that came out unexpectedly in the ducks yard that I did not use this months. I transplanted them all because I will use that yard again because I bought two more duck babies Daisy and Maya (pics on Insta- yellow funny fluffs). Still not chickens, I did not expect a shortage of that, too, but I have a promise after tenth of May. The flower garden looks wonderful with lily-of-the-valley, tulips, forget-me-nots, lilacs, And all the fresh green of Spring. I try to enjoy the little things and to pause for a minute but these days I have felt overwhelmed with all the news. Have a nice day, enjoy everything and try to rest, after such a busy week. With much love, from faraway, Laura_s_world from Romania
ReplyDeleteDear Laura,
DeleteI am sorry your phone is broken! I hope it can be fixed! Thank you for writing even with this struggle!
All the seedlings that came up by themselves... I bet they will do well! And they are free! I saw your ducks!! They are gorgeous! I love them! I hope you get your chickens.. they truly are worth gold! Your flower garden sounds divine! Spring is a very happy time for so many things. Time in the garden is the best, especially with added animals as you have. Yes the news continues to be intense.
Your sunflowers will look glorious but be good seeds for the hens later on! Everything is made useful! With much love Annabel.xxx
Annabel you have done so much well done to you. What a lovely start to Lily's blanket and adorable colours I might add, lovely scones, lasagne, soup and of course that compost pile is a gardeners dream for sure. What lovely tea cup/sauces and side plate tea sets you were given and great you were able to pick up more jars too and even had the lids to fit them at home. Lovely you got yourself a new dressing gown and pair of boots too.
ReplyDeleteWell re politics I am choosing to ignore it all and be creative lol. All I know is everything is going up so much in price (eek insurances comes to mind in our household), that sadly most people are struggling which is sad to see. Our local trading post/men's shed that sells everything you can imagine secondhand is saying that sales are slowing too as most people have little to no spare money to buy other than essential items and pay bills at the moment.
Like you I love a good thrift or op shop as well and pick up bargains when I see them too on items we need for the home. We do have a couple of good ones near us in opposite larger towns either side of us. One is the tip shop which is Endeavour run and the other is a community op shop where the proceeds go to buy food/supply meals etc to feed, bathe and clothe those in need/ homeless too. With the tip shop you can get 5 pieces of china, glasses etc for $2 amongst a myriad of furniture, machinery and much more at bargain prices. The other community op shop sell just about everything for similar bargain prices. Other op shops dare I say it are poisonously expensive so much so I am sure that anyone who is struggling would not be able to afford to buy items from them which is so sad.
Seeing all that is going on like you are with prices rising so much I take the opportunity to stock up on items we need and a few spares at bargain prices where I can both in stores and op shops too. This week I managed to get 6 towels and 13 cotton tea towels new with tags from the community op shop for $15 which is a bargain. The towels are light weight but we wanted them for when we are working in the garden or timber cutting just for run about towels for the heat or for putting in the car. DH got movie DVDs he wanted too for $1 - $2 for multiple cd sets.
DH and I cleaned some of the underside of the roof in the patio which had a big build up of dust. Still more to go but we will do it bit by bit as time permits.
I sorted out the bathroom linen cupboard and threw out out anything beyond it's lifespan and replaced them with new spares from storage. I also sorted my winter clothing into the wardrobe as it is now getting cooler here. So glad I took advantage of the super low priced clothing sales of the unfortunate clothing businesses that went bust and bought enough of items I need now and spares too for storage. I also bought new sheet sets to replace sheet sets that wore out and some for backup for storage too. Also bought mouthwash to replace what we used on half price sales saving $16.50 on usual prices.
Hope you get rain soon Annabel and all the bluebirds are able to prepare in some way.
Lorna.
Dear Lorna, Thank you very much! I have heard of tip shops and they sound fantastic to me but I have never been to one. I need to investigate if any of our towns actually have them but I dont think so. I am glad you still have some good op shops you can go to.
DeleteInsurance is a huge problem.. many people just no longer have it so they live with a disaster hanging over their heads. Vast areas seem to be uninsurable especially re floods.
The towels you got were a great buy! I think of every area as a kind of pantry. This week I am making up bedding for guests and I was able to go to my linen pantry and find all the linens and towels needed!
It is the same with clothing and you buying ahead as businesses closed... now you are set! Yes it is work to think ahead, plan ahead, store things away etc but it is an investment.
Thanks so much Lorna, with love Annabel.xxx
Dear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work on your baking and crochet. It is wonderful that you are adding more veggies as your sauce cooks down. I had some pan juices and cooked onions and peppers. I blended it up with some sour cream into a lovely sauce to serve over some meatballs. Such a good way to stretch my leftovers and preserve some great flavor.
My chickens are laying well. And the 4 chicks are really growing. Babysitting money is adding up. I've made over $200 now, all while helping out friends. The garden is filling up too!
Love to all,
Leslie in Ohio
Dear Leslie, Your meal sounds delicious! Sour cream is a winner for flavour!
DeleteAnd the chickens laying and the bay sitting money! These are great! Your garden last year I remember produced a lot... I hope the same for you this year! With love Annabel.xxx
