Feather your Nest Friday, 18th April, 2025. Good Friday.
It is Good Friday and Easter weekend. Before Easter I prayed that I could learn and grow during Lent and concentrate at least for a little while each day on some study and prayer.
Well... there is the saying about be careful for what you pray for as indeed I was delivered a whole bunch of lessons in humility and appreciation. They have not been lost on me at least! Sometimes lessons are not easy ones!
It is still dry and it has still been like summer. I didn't think the paddocks could be worse but they are. I actually avoid looking.
Suddenly this week I felt unprepared for Easter Sunday! Then I remembered! I had dried and candied a whole heap of figs from Chloe's tree. They taste delicious and so chewy which is good!
I got busy and dipped these through chocolate and packaged them up. It gave me about twenty gifts! And I still had spares!
In my imaginings these would be expensive in a store. Today I had a guest and was able to send them away with two dozen eggs and a box of chocolates. This felt so good!
These were so easy to do, so delicious and inexpensive... I will make them again next year as long as the tree has figs!
Easter eggs have become so expensive. Over in The Tuesday Afternoon Club this was a subject. There is no rule you have to buy Easter chocolates. Over the years I have made fudge, muffins, slices, brownies.... all sorts of things for a fraction of the price and fed many more people.
As you know Mum and I collaborate to give the Grandkids/ Great Grandkids warm pjs and things for winter, since Easter usually marks the cold season. I have these ready too and am so pleased with how nice they are. So I was prepared after all!
I set up my worm farm! I never fancied this until I felt God dropped a worm farm at my feet and I felt I should do it. It turns out it is actually fun and not revolting as I thought! I officially have worms. haha.
I did all the things... soaked the coir in water, set up the container and filled it with worms... when I bought these I was so hoping they came in a can (can of worms) but they came in a box.
Today I made a menu plan... mostly cooking I will do after the school holidays and with no kids here... and then I got celery into the freeze drier and I plan to fd most of the cabbage also.
So the week turned out better than I thought!
This is the verse that keeps coming to me this week... "ponder the path of your feet."
Have a very lovely Easter and long weekend, I hope it is a break if you are tired and a time with family and friends too.xxxx
Annabel and Dear Blue Birds,
ReplyDeleteAnnabel, I am so happy that the guy had more hay to give you. Prayers you receive rain soon and the paddocks become a lush green.
Your chickens noticed Fall arriving and are back to producing, I think soon you will be freeze drying eggs also.
The produce is beautiful. So many wonderful meals will come from all.
We had a slow week here, which we both needed. I did do baking and we had a Birthday celebration for Granddaughter. I even went into my present stash to give my Granddaughter a crocheted kitchen set and bath set. I baked her a Red Velvet Cake and her Grandfather made her 3 different pizzas and fried baby peppers along with cocktail hot dogs I wrapped with cresent roll dough, all that she asked for.
During the week I found a recipe for a crumb coffee cake, new to me. I tried it and husband said it was a keeper. I love finding recipes that are worth making over and over.
We are prepared for Easter dinner, just a few things to do for it. Celebrating our Lord's rising. May all have a blessed Easter.
Dear Rosanne, Eggs freeze dry perfectly and you have jars of bright yellow! I have been able to keep everyone in eggs.
DeleteI hope you have a beautiful Easter! Your cake sounds lovely I love coffee flavour. And your cake for your Grand daughter was stunning! With love Annabel.xxx
Annabel you accomplished a lot. I’m having the granddaughters and daughter, daughter in law here for dinner tonight in celebration of Easter weekend. I had froze strawberries and rhubarb so going to make a large cobbler for dessert and cream cheeses chicken lasagna. Then on Sunday I am planning on church Sunday morning and after church going to brunch with a group of friends. I’m trying to stay active and enjoy different things. Almost three years since the passing of my hubby.
ReplyDeleteGot some spring cleaning done this past week and getting some seeds ready to plant for a small garden this week. Also, I’m trying to finish binding on quilts that I’ve had ready to finish for some time.
Have a wonderful Easter weekend. Phyllis from Oregon
Dear Phyllis, Your Easter plans sound very good and your menu sounds beautiful! It is 15 months since Andy died. Yes you have to fully enjoy your family and friends.
DeletePlanting your garden is fantastic too! And quilts! Finishing those off will be amazing and you will feel good about that. Have a very blessed Easter, with love Annabel.xxx
Annabel, your worm farm brought back memories. My Dad raised nightcrawlers and red wigglers. I helped a lot in that endeavor and, actually, found it interesting. We would save all the newspapers up, tear them in strips, then soak them in water until they were saturated. Then we would add the newspaper to the worm beds. The worms would quickly turn it into compost and multiply.
ReplyDeleteWe put a dozen nightcrawlers per paper cup with lid (they were huge) and sold them. The red wigglers were much smaller so we could put way more in a cup.The people who fished were very happy.
My paternal grandfather taught me to fish before I was five years old. Putting the worm on the hook was a requirement. My Dad taught me to cast the line into the water. I usually caught quite a few fish. I only fished once, as an adult, and never again. Hooking a fish didn't go along with my great love of animals.
Have a very blessed Easter weekend, Bluebirds.
With much love,
Glenda
Dear Glenda, That was very enterprising of your Dad! Since Andy used to go fishing I ma familiar with all the kinds of bait people go and buy! I actually rather liked fishing and also we would put a net out for yabbies.. (like small freshwater lobsters) and really it goes with my love of foraging etc.
DeleteI hope you have a wonderful Easter! With love Annabel.xxx
Your chocolates look really good Annabel, what lovely gifts. I'm sure your Mum will really appreciate the ready to eat lasagne portions. I think this is one of the best things we can do for our elderly relatives. When my mother in law was alive I would cook extra on a Sunday, usually a roast and plate up two meals for her to have in the week.
ReplyDeleteI had a few nice finds in the charity shops last week. I wanted an umbrella to keep in the car and found one which was actually new and also a big bag with a waterproof lining to use as my swimming bag. A new picture book for my granddaughter and several boxed sets of new ladies hankies, I am building up a stock of hankies and will stop using tissues. I have lost some weight and now don't fit some of my casual clothes so I wanted to buy a few pieces to keep me going until I've finished losing weight and can buy new/ second hand. I found two pairs of cropped trousers in the charity shop.for upcoming summer.
I mended a pyjama jacket for my husband.
I visited the posh supermarket early for some good yellow sticker deals to put in the freezer. Lidl had a special deal for Easter, bags of carrots, parsnips, potato and large swedes for 8 pence a bag! I bought a bag of each for us and one of each for my daughter. This can be made into soup for the freezer, pureed veg for my granddaughter or eaten fresh.I have made a chocolate sponge with mini eggs for Easter and fish pie for today, Good Friday. It will feed us another day too.
I attended a charity fundraiser this morning and won a lovely new soft toy doorstop on the tombola, it can go to one of my daughters.
Happy Easter to all who celebrate the holiday.
Penny in the UK
Dear Penny, I still think a roast dinner is one of the best meals of all and gives so many extras. A complete dinner is a very good gift of help and health to someone.
DeleteI lost my good umbrella last year. No doubt I left it in a shop, trying to not leave a trail of water on their floor... so you have reminded me to get a new one. And a car one is a good idea.
I love handkerchiefs especially pretty ones! You did great at the thrift store.
The posh supermarket... now many people would just not go there thinking it's too expensive but you have worked it out! They have amazing bargains! Near where I lived in the city was a small posh supermarket and the prices were shocking. But they were so posh they couldn't have any thing that looked the least bit not posh and would make the things down to half nothing! And I would score all kinds of luxury items. You did so well there!
Winning a prize was an extra bonus! How nice! Happy Easter to you too! With love Annabel.xxx
What a blessing you are to others. I am an invalid and look forward to your Friday letters and hearing the way you bless others. I am thankful for all my Savior does and did for me. Your chocolate figs look so delicious!
ReplyDeleteAnything with chocolate makes things so yummy! I am looking forward to hearing more about your worm farm. Have a lovely Easter......Nancy
Thank you so much Nancy! I hope you had a beautiful Easter! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteThe fire-fighting equipment is a very thoughtful gift. Now, that's a phrase you don't hear every day! Seriously, though, I find it really touching that those guys were thinking of your safety.
ReplyDeleteThis was an amazing gift! Even Mum was totally impressed! I just never know what trade is coming next! Thanks Tracy!xxx
DeleteDear Annabel (and everyone),
ReplyDeleteThose fig chocolates look amazing! Beautiful cooking, produce, and eggs - and I am so glad you were able to get hay. The worm farm is totally intriguing. What a good week.
This week I planted out my seedlings and seeds in the Greenstalks and raised beds; invested in some new living room furniture and gave the old to a family who needed it; did a pantry stockup of spices, vanilla, cocoa powder, olive oil, tea, and chocolate for baking; packed up some cookie bars and plant starts for gifts; and did a little crafting. My dad and I went to the university theatre performance (I get a discount) and although work has been wild these past few weeks, I got the nice surprise of a free annual pass to the art museum.
Also, I have, and would strongly recommend, been investing in myself with doctor's and dentist appointments/preventive care. Not pleasant, but our health is so important, and we as women tend to take care of everyone else first. This weekend I scheduled a tetanus booster & am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel for appointments, haha.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.
<3
Kathy
Dear Kathy, I keep meaning to say... I love the Greenstalks in the pretty colours! They look so good! It is so nice a family could use your old furniture! Your home looks gorgeous.
DeleteYes true we need to take care of ourselves. Good point, we tend to watch over everyone else!
You did a great stock up! I am going to a store tomorrow. I dont know if I will find any after Easter deals? Have a good new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Annabel the figs look great! Like they could be in an expensive deli. What a beautiful box of produce to work through. I hope you get rain in the next week.
ReplyDeleteLast weekend we had friends over for lunch. I was determined to use what we had at home and made sausage rolls, pizza scrolls, vanilla cupcakes and apple muffins. The following day we went to a shared meal and I took the remaining muffins, made a roasting pan tray of brownies, and a potato bake. I think I could easily have spent $100 if I’d been to the supermarket and bought things. So I was really happy to have had the time to prepare food myself.
I have been working on a cross stitch for my daughters that I started last year. It is huge, and a bit overwhelming. I started last year and then took a break for months. I’ve set myself a goal to get over halfway by the end of the holidays and am hoping I’ll feel inspired to keep the momentum after that.
Wishing you all a very happy Easter!
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen,
DeleteI think your friends would have enjoyed that lunch very much! The beautiful things you took with you the next day sound delicious too.
Ive had many projects where I take a break... but then when you come back it is like a turbo boost with so much done already! So I hope you are speeding along with the cross stitch! Our kids have one more week of holidays... I am not sure but it sounds like it might be the same there. Enjoy this time. With love Annabel.xxx
Hello and Happy Easter to Annabel and all of the bluebirds!
ReplyDeleteWe are all quite excited here--my daughter is being baptized Sunday!
I woke up at 2:30 am Thursday in great pain--about a 9 on a scale of 1-10. Five months ago, I dislocated my shoulder and I've slowly been progressing. And now, this, in the same shoulder. It hurt as much as the dislocation. At 4:30 am I called my friend and neighbor and she came to stay with my daughter. I went to the hospital in an ambulance. After 3 hours in the emergency room, the doc decided I have bursitis in the same shoulder. How did I get so lucky??? So now I am on meds, mostly to relieve the pain, and I can't drive because of what's in them. This is NOT how I planned to spend Easter weekend!
Annabel, thanks again for the suggestion in your preparedness series about keeping ready-cooked meals in the freezer. Once again they have saved me. We had chili for dinner last night, I'm thawing a meatloaf right now for tonight and I plan to bake a ham Sunday. All were in my freezer. All will make more than one meal. Tonight I will also bake extra potatoes and make a big salad for all three days. After that...well, I'm trying hard NOT to think much about after that!
Dear Maxime, so sorry to hear about your shoulder complication and all that pain. Wanted to write before but something keeps blocking me so I hope this goes through the second time. Happy Sunday for you and your daughter - such a big day!🌷
DeleteDear Maxine, Oh no I am really sorry for your pain! And what a shock that it came on so quickly! I hope the meds have greatly reduced the pain now.
DeleteIt is basically guaranteed that we are going to need those ready meals at some time... even if it is just handy as we are tired. But in an emergency they are a huge help. I am so glad you had frozen things to go to. And Im glad you had your neighbour and daughter to help you! I hope you will soon be feeling much better. With love Annabel.xxx
Happy Easter to you Annabel. I so enjoy your weekly posts. I just wanted to pop by & say I was gifted a worm farm for my birthday several years ago now. It has become one of my absolute favorite things. I use it for all the scraps that I can & I add layers & then dig the used layer into my raised veggie garden. I love seeing the worms busy doing their thing - & the "worm tea" that comes out the bottom is just the very best plant food EVER. I use it on all my potted things & even my indoor plants. I have not needed to buy any plant food since getting my worm farm. I think yours will bring you lots of pleasure. xx (ps ... when I have an abundance of the worm tea I fill plastic 1.5 litre drink bottles with it, tie a nice label on & it makes another gift - people love it when I gift it to them).
ReplyDeleteDear Julie, Thank you for telling me this! I am really hoping it pays off as you say for my garden. I am enjoying it so far! Next time someone asks me what kind of farmer I am I am dying to say worms. haha
DeleteI realised I should have got more worms than I did so I ordered some more. I got the top up pack instead of the starter pack. So this week I will add in more. Then we will be really off and running! Have a lovely new week! with love Annabel.xxx
Ooh, I bet those figs would be SO delicious! My mouth is watering! Such a great idea for an Easter goodie. Tomorrow I am planning to bake hot cross buns for Easter breakfast and to give a few away at church. And we'll color a few eggs, too. It's been so lovely attending all the Holy Week services at church as Lent draws to a close. I know what you mean about Lent's revealing so much about ourselves...so many lessons to take away, it is truly humbling, as you say.
ReplyDeleteWishing you and your family a blessed Easter, celebrating the risen Christ! Alleluia!
Lots of love,
Jen in NS
Dear Jen, It sounds like you have truly soaked in Lent. Hot cross buns, home baked, would be the best! Being able to attend Holy Week services would be amazing! Have a wonderful new week! With love Annabelxxx
DeleteI have not commented in a long time. I had been commenting on the prudent homemaker blog, but she hasn't posted for a few months. I have planted some of my raised beds. Carrots, beets, kohlrabi, lettuce, green onions, snow peas and thyme. I will plant broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and celery next week.
ReplyDeleteI got a few good deals this week. 10 pounds of potatoes for $0.59. There was a limit of two bags so that is what I got. Also butter for $1.99 a pound. Haven't seen it that low in a long time. Got twenty pounds as there was no limit. Cream cheese was 1.99 for a pound.
My son, dil and two granddaughters are coming for Easter dinner and an Easter egg hunt. The two year old loves bluey, so I found a bluey bucket for her for an Easter basket. She can use it this summer to pick things from the garden.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter.
Dear Nancy, I am glad to have you here than you! Brandy said she was taking a break until January but hasn't returned. She is still positing on Instagram I see so she is ok which is good to know!
DeleteYou have planted a great variety! I hope they all do well for you! You got great deals too!
An Easter egg hunt is so fun and the kids here love Bluey too! Have a beautiful Easter! With love Annabel.xxx
Nancy--good to see you here. Where did you find butter for $1.99 lb? I'm down to about 4 lbs.
Delete--Maxine in N. Idaho
Butter is at Safeway through Tuesday. Potatoes are at Yokes. Nancy
DeleteThank you! I saw the potatoes at Yoke's but somehow missed the butter in the Safeway ad.
DeleteI had never heard of chocolate dipped figs until you mentioned it previously. Then I received in the mail a catalog from Zingerman's (Michigan USA) a fancy deli shop with mail order. They sell chocolate dipped figs in boxes. Depending on the number in the box they are about $3 each!
ReplyDeleteI love figs & chocolate. I will have to try making this someday.
I love that having things on hand for gifts is one of your priorities. I am working on building up my gift bin so I'll be able to do that more often too.
Oh $3 each is even more than I thought! Wow I make about 150! Yes working all year around and adding things to the gift cupboard really is amazing. I just love being able to be ready to choose a gift, wrap it and not have to go anywhere or spend anything to do it. It's such a help come Christmas too! xxx
DeleteDear Annabel, I love what your visitors brought you for gifts! How thoughtful. I love that you made your Mum lasagne too. This is wonderful. I hope you get rain. We are doing some planting of seeds. Finally it is getting cooler to be outside. Lots of love, Bridget
ReplyDeleteDear Bridge, I am glad it has cooled down. FINALLY I think/hope it has here too. And today I was able to give Mum her lasagne. My cabin is a trade set up. I have had the best trades doing this! Have a wonderful Easter! with love Annabel.xxx
DeleteI've been practicing NOT grocery shopping...Sales not being the best and seldom seeing good loss leaders or seasonal sales has made that easier and easier. My pantry and freezer are a bit less full, but that's okay. I will refill them a bit at a time, just as they got filled up originally.
ReplyDeleteThis past week, I noted that a set of chairs I have for seating in my kitchen had incredibly dingy pads. The chairs were a fourth-hand gift (passed among relatives and then through one of them to me a non-relative, lol). Ages ago I'd purchased some nice four-inch foam, and I always have a yard or so of some fabric on hand. The seats got recovered this week and cost was a bit of sweat and aggravation as I got overheated but nothing more.
We are having our kitchen painted and its very slow progress as we are a 'side job' and not on the craftsman's main client list. But oh, how lovely it looks as each section is revealed. It was good incentive to get those chair cushions covered, knowing they would look so lovely in the space once we can put furniture back.
I was thinking earlier today how nice Easter was as a child. It wasn't a whole lot of chocolate candy but a bunny cake (two round layers with one layer cut into a bow tie, and two ears) and frosted with flaked coconut, a family dinner, an egg hunt with mostly hard-boiled eggs (which may as well be chocolate in costs here in the US just now, lol). Dyeing eggs was so much fun and they looked so pretty.
In my family that was also the time for a new dress and often a dainty white straw purse and white patent shoes and then that went on to be the summer church outfit, but it debuted at Easter services each year.
Today I took advantage of a sale to purchase cheese blocks (2 pounds at $3 a pound) and butter (also $3 a pound). I haven't seen such sales in quite a long while now. I was very glad to pick them up on our way home since we were going right by one of the stores with the sale.
I hope everyone has a lovely Easter weekend.
Terri, I love the sound of your new Easter outfit which became your summer church outfit. I can see you in my minds eye.
DeletePenny in the UK
Dear Terri, Very good job on the chairs! Fresh paint through the kitchen will look beautiful! I just love that Easter was new dress time and the purse and shoes were special too. How beautiful.
DeleteThat was great on the sales!! I am so happy you found those as you say the good deals are harder to come by! Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
Happy Easter Annabel and bluebirds 🐣
ReplyDeleteAnnabel I love how you dipped the figs in chocolate! What a beautiful gift. They would taste amazing!
You will love your worm farm. I have one and sometimes I forget to pay my worms any attention but the worms are so forgiving! They multiply in no time with a bit of love.
Enjoy your Easter
Love from Cheryl 🐣
Thank you Cheryl, That is encouraging to know! Have a great new week! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel and Bluebirds,
ReplyDeleteWishing you all a blessed Easter as you celebrate the Resurrection!
As always you had a very productive week, Annabel.
I love your dried figs in chocolate. Decadent and healthy!
My week has been chock full of processing veg and driving children to work/appointments.
I was given 2 boxes of celery and 2 boxes of zucchini. I accepted the celery with the intent of juicing much of it. But my juicer broke after only a quart made. So lots of chopping insued! Bread making too.
I'm off to fill Easter eggs.
Love, Leslie (Ohio)
Dear Leslie, The celery will be handy. I really like it in chicken casserole/chicken pot pies. I hope you had a wonderful Easter!! With much love Annabel.xxx
Deleteannabel, could you please tell me how you candy and dry your chocolate covered figs? my fig tree will probably produce some this year. thanks so much. happy easter. bonnie
ReplyDeleteDear Bonnie, I just highlighted it and tagged you... thinking you are Boonie H? in the Tuesday club. Very easy to do! xxx
