Feather your Nest Friday. 11th April, 2025.

We are right in the middle of Autumn but the weather is Summer.  It is so dry and now it is hot when it should be cool.  So many farmers are just hanging on.

I have tried to just focus on what good I can do.

I will start with left over pastry.  I made a big batch of Pasties over two days.  At the end I ran out of filling before I ran out of pastry... so I made jam "pastries" and considering how simple they are  they look pretty fancy.

I used to just do little rounds in muffin trays.  Chloe showed me how to make pinwheels which look much more professional!  😊

The Pasties....  I made a big batch of filling.  This is a big meat stretcher.   I use my slicer dicer to cube a heap of potatoes...

In my big, deep frying pan I cook up some chopped onion and mince.  (Ground beef.) I have no measurements!    Then I add the potato,  a beef stock cube and a big splodge of tomato sauce.

Then when the meat is cooked and the potato has softened a bit I turn off the heat and add a couple of bags of frozen chopped veggies.   The frozen factor helps cool this mix right down... as you want it cool or your pastry goes soggy and hard to handle.

I began to make up regular and also gluten free pockets.

The rectangle ones are gluten free.

I don't know how many I made!  I had one for dinner two nights.  I gave one to one of my farm helpers.

I gave Mum three.   Chloe got a tray which included kid sized ones...

I froze some for emergency meals.  I gave three to my  niece.   The first day I was still cooking late evening and got sick of it so I refrigerated everything and kept going the next morning!

My other cook up was I decided to roast one of my on special after Christmas turkeys!  I just felt like a roast.   I had a roast dinner twice and make up a huge baking dish of roast everything for Chloe's family.

Her children will demolish roast meat and veggies and leave nothing.

I froze left over turkey meat and the bones which will become more meals and soup.

Some more apples were picked.

These will become something next week.

I started a blanket for Lily.  This will be single bed size.  The colours are to go with her room.

It will probably take me all winter.   Also I bought two patterns but after being given patterns by two lovely friends I am set with so many things I can make for Lily.

I wrote some happy mail.

My stock up item was bags of beans ie dry soup beans and dry Italian bean mix.

In the garden I planted up a bed of garlic and a bed of elephant garlic. I am really hoping these are successful.

My seeds continue to come up and my seedlings are growing.   I had trellis set up (which I showed a few weeks ago)  but I still had one bed that will soon need some kind of trellis.   Mum said she had just the thing!   And she did!  So the back of my car was loaded up!

Tomorrow I am going to the hardware store to, hopefully, get stakes that will hold this up,  worms for the worm far,  silverbeet and chard seedlings and you never basically know once you're in a hardware store!

Mum made lunch and Chloe and the kids (and me) went over to her farm.  It is about a half hour drive over a four wheel drive track.   I took this photo as the boys were both wearing vests Mum makes them every year.

My Dad always wore a green vest.  So it's a tradition now.   Lily gets a pink version too.

A great time was had by all and this was the scene on the way home.

And this is pretty much how I feel now.  It is 10 30 pm after a long day, travelling, shopping and seeing Harper dance in a concert tonight.  Tomorrow heading home I will do an Aldi stock up and make the most of being near shops I don't normally get to go to.

I hope it was a very good week for you.  How did you build up your home, pantry or garden?   xxx

  1. Dear Annabel,
    Sorry for your dry weather!
Glad you were able to have a good week regardless. Wow, wow...you have given me the solution to a problem. I have some ground turkey in the freezer that wasn't a family favorite. What a great use! Your pasties look so lovely.
I laughed at the kids all asleep in the car. My, I remember those days of carrying sleeping children in from the car. Loved it.

My week has been full. Baking bread, snacks and desserts. Canning blueberry jam to use up frozen blueberries I have been given. Also I got caught up on mending and sewing. Plus I am slowly getting my garden planted. I have a bunch of celery and zucchini gifted to me. I'm hoping to juice, and cook the celery. Shred and bake with the zucchini.
I have made a goal to clean an area each day. Yesterday it was the laundry room. The day before it was just the desktop. Today I plan to straighten bookcases in the living room.
    Blessings to all the Bluebirds,
    Leslie (Ohio)

    1. Dear Leslie, Ground turkey would work just fine in the pasties! You did have a productive week! Also the celery and zucchini are great gifts and so useful. I like to break down cleaning projects this way. Even cleaning out one drawer at a time. You soon have covered so many areas!
I also remember my girls both asleep, usually coming home from a trip. They would wake up surprised we were home "already." haha! With love Annabel.xxx

  2. Hi Annabel
The photos of the children tell such a lovely story. Hand-knitted vests for the children are the best! I used to work in a school and when we had non uniform days I loved to see children who wore hand-knitted garments, usually wool not synthetic. So nice.
Your mammoth pasty cook up was so worthwhile. Mine this week was vegetable and chickpea curry. I also tried a new recipe for pastry using coconut flour and ground almonds so it was gluten free and lower in carbs. Still needs a bit of tweaking but not bad. I found yellow sticker pork mince for the freezer and stocked up on dried cranberries although what a price! Might need to give up on those and just use other dried fruit.
It was my turn to bake cakes for floral group so I made chocolate sponge topped with mini chocolate eggs and fruit tea loaf. Our workshop was to make Japanese kokedama which are moss balls into which you plant succulents or small ferns. We wove the jute string cradle to hang it up too. Great fun.
We planted carrots and parsnips in the ground and sowed seeds for cosmos, zinnias and runner beans and my husband pricked out many snapdragon seedlings. A friend gave me a bag of surplus purple sprouting broccoli which we have enjoyed. I have decorated for Easter with the things we use every year.
I am planning a trip to a town tomorrow with lots of charity shops, I have my list and I'm so looking forward to it. Hope to have good finds to report next week.
    Good wishes to all Bluebirds.

    1. Dear Penny, Thank you! I love the sound of veggie and chickpea curry. Also your floral group would have loved that chocolate sponge and the easter theme too. Between the beautiful cake and the actual floral project this class sounds amazing. I love moss. So I am sure I would love these balls! Moss to me is like velvet... maybe thats why I have always loved it so much.
I really hope your charity shopping day is fantastic and you have lots of finds! I cant wait to hear! Chloe and I used to have a day like this at one time plus lunch along the way. Those days were amazing!
You added to the freezer too so it was a good week! With love Annabel.xxx

  3. What fun, Annabel! Tiring (I'm sure), but FUN. Staying busy is good for the soul.

You asked last week if we'd ever raised chickens before. No. I've got books, am watching You Tube videos, and finding encouragement. We'll only have a few, maybe 3-4. Inquiries are out now to find winter hardy, calm birds, even if older ones at first. Easing our way into it. Blessings to you and your family, Elise.

  4. I love your fancy pastries, and salivated over your roast. Like your grands, I’d demolish it too! Roast dinners are my favourite meal of all.
Annabel, that photo of the kids in the car…💓💓💓💓
Not much pantry building here right now as I’m taking advantage of the monsoon break to clear and tidy the outside of the house and the yards…they were in a mess after the months of monsoon flooding.
Breaks my heart to see our farmers up here losing all their stock in the floods, whilst your own are facing drought. May God bless them all and provide what they need. 🙏🏻

    1. Dear Jenny, Out of all the fancy things in the world I think a roast is still the best meal. And you get planned leftovers as a bonus. I am glad you can get out in the garden again. The imagines of drowning stock and stranded animals... these all upset me so much and while our contiditons are terrible they are not as traumatic as what your farmers are dealing with. Yes prayers for all. And strength for all. With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Wow. As always I am overwhelmed
    with all you accomplished.
    Your grand children are adorable.
It's spring here and I spent the day
Potting up baby seedlings into larger pots.
My husband rototilled the garden beds.
I have snap dragons ,sweet William, pink and purple zinnias, lobelias, foxgloves, verbena and daisies ready to go in the ground.
My husband planted the vegetable garden already.
With everything so expensive now I planted only from seed.
Everything came up really well .
I hope you get some cooler weather. I hate when you get cheated out of college fall days!
Oh and could you possibly give us the receipt for your gluten free pastie dough?

    1. Dear Savannah, Your garden is going to be so pretty! And a veggie garden too! It is so good to plant from seed. I always bought seedlings but now I am getting better at growing from seed and wow it is so much cheaper! And you get so many!
I do not make the GF pastry. I have, in small quantities only. It is tricky to not get holes in the finished folded over product. I buy Woolworths gf frozen pastry. Sorry about that! Thank you so much for your kind words! With love Annabel.xxx

  6. Dear Annabel, what a lovely week. Praying you find many bargains to bring home… a ship sailing from afar so to speak!! I love that the kids had such a great time and you got a peaceful trip home. Lols. The colours for Lily are beautiful and i’m sure the blanket will be treasured for years to come.

I’ve had 2 people tell me that they think we will have a cold winter this year after a number that were quite mild. That means lots of firewood required, and hay. Once the frost arrives, we lose the pasture. I started working on splitting and stacking firewood - this batch was old fence posts from a fence we pulled out. We still have a couple more that my husband will pull out with the tractor, and cut up into appropriate lengths. That will fill the rack in the woodshed. I’ll be looking for dead trees to cut down and stack the rounds under the rack to continue drying until i’m ready to split them. In the meantime, i’m also collecting pine ones every day and setting them aside also as fire lighters.

My goal is to get the majority of my winter garden in this week - hopefully it will get a good start before the weather gets cold and growth slows. Quite a lot of compost to shovel to accomplish that! We are also readying paddocks for winter.

My stock up this week is chicken feed which is on sale. Yay! It hasnt been on sale for ages!! We have a project going on that requires concrete. In theory, it is planned for the concrete to be poured Wednesday provided it doesnt rain. Im hoping any rain will head south where it is needed.

My encouragement to you is continue to get the infrastructure in place - clean out dams, add tanks, etc. last time we were in drought it broke the week after we had done that. God is so good!! Remember that Today is one day closer to rain than yesterday was.

    1. Dear Missy,
Thank you! Yes planning a garden party or wedding outside.. that could also cause rain! haha
I hope you are able to get the cementing done. And the rain goes south!
I agree about infrastructure. We did new roofs on sheds, new gutters and tanks, solar panels... now more recently security... but it never ends. As you know!
The really old type fence posts are fantastic firewood. Great recycling there really. Stacking firewood is itself a very good thing.
Yes... I like the Proverbs Woman bringing in things like merchant ships from far away lands! I love all things similar ie to gather to harvest and to store up!
Have a very good week! With love Annabel.xxx

  8. Dear Annabel, I love the photo of the kids tuckered out in the car, they had the best time. I love the big roast cook up, how lovely and nutritious. The pasties look delicious. My grandmother used to make pasties, they have brought up special memories for me. The blanket you are making for Lily is adorable! The colours are lovely. The boys in their vests are so sweet. I hope you had good luck at the hardware store. It is school holidays and I am greatly enjoying it. I wish time would slow down. Alas I am trying to enjoy the moment. Not much getting ahead here. We did splurge on fish and chips and it was really good. Not the healthiest, but a nice treat for every now and again. Lots of love, Bridget And we haven't changed seasons here either. It is still rainy. I am hoping for blue skies and rain your way.

  9. I love the picture of your sleeping grandbabies! What a lovely way to end a day! And all your nutritious cooking! Beautiful pinwheels!
It's been quite rainy and cool here in the Southern US this week. I've taken time to spring clean a little more. One room at a time, top to bottom. It makes good rainy day work. I'm praying for rain to come your way!
I did stock up on flour and bath tissue this week, as both were on sale. Between the flour, sugar, beans, and rice, we have a good stock if needed. There are other things in my pantry of course, but those four are my main stock up items. Thank you for the push to get that started. It feels like having a non-monetary emergency fund!
Hope you have a wonderful week ahead!

  10. Those jam pastries are just beautiful! (And truly delicious I think.) Also lovely to see the apple harvest, the vests for the boys, your blanket for Lily…
Thanks for sharing what you’ve been up to. It helps all of us to start small and bigger projects indoors and outdoors and to be generous to family, friends, neighbours and many others. 🌷👏 Esther
