Welcome to 2025! Encourage one another.
Happy New Year! I really really love the chance to make a new start. I spent yesterday (between jobs) thinking over the year. Andy's death and Lily's birth, within weeks of each other, were obviously the biggest things. And all that came from these...
Next was, thanks to Andy, I went back to church. This transformed my year and me. I am not articulate enough to describe how beautiful it is and how much I benefit. God had a plan.
And surprisingly, considering, I was able to list so many things achieved here on the farm... from 13 calves being born, adding another 25 chickens or so, expanding gardens, renovating a house... Andy's rock on the hill and so much more. If you have not considered the progress you made in the last year take a little time because you may have come a long way and we need to celebrate that before we figure out where to next. Making my list made me feel really grateful. Even though 2024 was like a stick that couldn't stop beating us we are still going!
This year I have three themes.
For such a time as this.
A joyful heart.
Encourage one another.
Friday will still be Feather your Nest Friday because like considering the year, considering the week is really important. Otherwise we just get kind of lost at sea!
Over the next few days I hope to get each theme going. So today I am kind of combining A Joyful Heart and Encourage One Another together.
I think these themes will be self explanatory and why I chose them!
We are helped by clear instructions, for our benefit. It is like when all else fails read the instructions, right?
"The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed, those who help others are helped." Prov 11.25.
How simple is that?
"Therefore encourage one another and build each other up...... acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord." 1 Thes 5.11
"Aspire to live a quiet life.... and to work with your hands..." 1 Thes 4. 11-12
"Idle hands make one poor but diligent hands bring riches" Prov 10 4
"Her hands are busy... she lends her hands to the poor..." Prov 31 19
I could go on and on. If you would like more read Proverbs 31 right through and further look up "Bible verses about idle hands." Oh my gosh God does NOT like idle hands!!!
My Nana and my Mum are my examples. Neither have ever had idle hands. So I will tell you about Mum.
When I was little we had a chicken farm. One of my early memories was every week Mum and I would take eggs, over the railway tracks, to a lady who's husband had died and she had a lot of kids. We took that lady eggs for years.
Another early memory was Mum sewing little sheets for my brother who was yet to be born... and oh I just wanted to help sew!
My first bed had a pink and white squares blanket on it... I remember Mum making it and still have it to this day. And so in one constant stream ever since every baby in the district and family received a blanket and then over the years charities were added.
And yes it is true, busy hands mean a happy heart.
My girls were clothed in things Mum sewed and knitted. And now my Grandchildren are.

ReplyDeleteThis student is ready.
It was made clear to me in a bible verse just a coupe of days ago that Jesus loves a generous spirit, and I declared to myself to improve on this character trait this year, and low and behold your post is discussing just that thing, talk about encouragement!!
From Cheryl
Wow, that is amazing! Lots of love, Bridget
DeleteThank you Cheryl! We are on this journey together!xxx

DeleteHappy New Year Annabel and Bluebirds
ReplyDeleteYour themes sound good for 2025 and will encourage us all together.
I'm glad you're carrying on with Feather Your Nest Friday, it really helps me to review the week and see what I've done. Funnily enough my husband and I spent some time this morning reviewing 2024 and
talked through what we want to achieve this coming year.
I went to the sales in town and bought cards for next Christmas and an advent calendar too. Our local quilting shop is moving premises and had a moving sale where I bought reduced price material for Christmas and birthday gift bags.
I stripped all the meat off the turkey and gammon and frozen it for future meals.
I had asked a member of staff at one of our better supermarkets when they marked down fresh food like meat and fish and armed with that information I was in through the doors early one morning. Wow! It was worth it, the markdowns were good and the quality excellent, I bought plaice, sausages and pork and paused there because our freezers are nearly full. When we've eaten down some space I will definitely go back to stock up.
Thank you for a lovely post, I love seeing photos of your Mum, it gladdens my heart to see her at the heart of family life.
Penny in the UK
Dear Penny, I just love that you asked the staff the best time to come. They re the ones who know. Most of them are trying to save money like us and if we ask nicely they will tip us off! This is a huge advantage! (insider info!). Wishing you a very Happy New Year! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteI love your themes for the year. I’m so grateful for examples like you, Andy, and your mum, as well as all of the industrious ladies who comment here to encourage others. I will add Chloe in here also, as the bits she shares are an inspiration to me as someone in a similar season of life with littles.
It seems overwhelming to look back over the year. The world seems so noisy, and the noisier it gets, the harder I push back with quiet simplicity. That is what I will be trying to cultivate in the new year: a quiet, simple life in which I am fully present with those I love.
Lots of love to you and the Bluebirds,
Kelsey
Dear Kelsey, Yes some of what is pushed at us is so ridiculous too. I often think "you have to be kidding me!" lol
DeleteBeing busy at home and looking after our families is a busy job! I have felt like the world is spinning too fast or something! Thanks so much for your kind words! With love Annabel.xxx
What a beautiful post, Annabel. Your mom does lovely work. Her generous heart has blessed many. May 2025 be a year of kindness, hope, joy and peace. It has been a very hard past four years for most people.
ReplyDeleteMany blessings to each bluebird,
Glenda
Miss Annabelle the statement
ReplyDeletethat 2024 was like a stick that wouldn't stop beating us hit home for me.
In the hospital twice, both my cars died and had to be replaced.
Hit by three hurricanes in six weeks.
Everything that ran on gas, electricity or propane had to be repaired or replaced.
The hurricanes damaged my plumbing and septic system.
While the plumber was under my house fixing the plumbing my refrigerator died.
I broke my toe tripping over my dog. My husband fell during the flood and badly injured his hand.
My brother in law died.
My neighbor and friend had a stroke then heart problems.
So he's been in and out of the hospital.
We are helping him as much as we can.
The car I replaced my car with
was in the repair shop twice with two large repair bills.
Which leads me to New Year's Eve.
My father in law was found in his car unconscious and died yesterday.
New Year's Eve.
So 2024 did beat us with a very big stick indeed.
But as I crawl out of the ruble of 2024 I look at your example and it inspires me. I thank God for the mercy he has shown us this year.
May God bless all of us in the coming year.
Wow that is a tough year you have outlined. I hope if you reflect you can identify some better moments. All the best for 2025.
DeleteOh my gosh I am so sorry. Crawling out of the rubble of 2024 is a very good description. I am so sorry about your losses and all you have been through. I followed a lot about the areas hit so hard in NC etc and guess you are somewhere up that way. I have never seen anything like it. And I know many still sound to be homeless. I hope and pray this will be a much better year for your family. xxxx
DeleteDear Annabel, I do not know how to bless others ! I am on a tight budget and don't know how to knit. What a blessing your mother is. And you were so blessed to have Andy ! Many people never have w love like that ! All your wonderful animals ! So exciting Sydney is coming to stay ! Maybe you could make his own sheets ! My mum is wonderfully creative like this and made my 10 year old niece and made her a sun dress for the hot summers out west ! I would love to learn how to quilt, how to be w better Baker and a better everything!! I don't want to be idle ! Happy 2025 Annabel ! With Love your friend Sonia, Sydney Nsw
ReplyDeleteDear Sonia, Thank you! Maybe spend time with your Mum, if you have it, and learn from her some sewing. It would be good time together, good fun and get you going on some projects. It is a big blessing having someone to teach you. With small scraps you could do some patchwork... and that is very economical. But there are so many ways to bless people from just talking with someone who seems lonely, write letters so the lonely, visit someone elderly, there are so many things. Ask God to show you what you can do. Very simple baking definitely blessed people and inexpensive too ie scones or some biscuits. Basically everyone loves those! Happy New Year! Love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Sonia, i’m presently using worn out farm shirts cut into strips to make a floor rug, same with jeans. Make it known amoungst the family youre looking for worn out clothes and you might be surprised what you get…. Or tell the op shops youd like any jeans that they cant sell! I think you should also consider….. the one thing that my friend does for me from time to time is simply making a cuppa and making me sit quietly and chat for a few minutes during a busy work day…. You may not realise the blessing making a cuppa and being a friend can truly be. Restorative and calming. Opportunities are around you. Missy
DeleteDear Annabel, wishing you and your family many blessings in this year. 👋🌸 Esther (The Neth.)
ReplyDeleteThank you and same to you Esther!xxx
DeleteHappy New Year Annabel to you and your family! I am always amazed by everything you do for yourself and your family. Blessing in 2025
ReplyDeleteThank you Belinda! I wish a beautiful 2025 to you!xxx
DeleteWhat a lovely post Annabel. And I like the sound of your themes.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Tracy!xxx
DeleteAnnabel, you are such a motivator and I am really looking forward to being a part of the Bluebirds this year. Positive people meeting the challenges of life, being creative, loving their neighbors, providing for their families.
ReplyDeleteThank you for investing your time and energy into this blog.
Thank you for investing your time.
Linda
Thank you Linda for such kind words! xxxx
DeleteI love this! I have a genetic disease that now has me in a wheelchair many days but even on the days when I am in so much pain that I cannot even use my hands I can pray. Many have told me that it means so much to be prayed for and that it has blessed them so much. So no matter haw little you are able to do, IT COUNTS!!
ReplyDeletePrayer is no little thing. How wonderful you are able and willing to do that. A pastor once told me. Don’t tell someone you will pray for them do it right now. So many promise and then forget. We need more prayer warriors 🙏
DeleteOh I agree! Many people are so so busy there is not enough prayer. I think praying for people is a ministry in itself. Absolutely! In my life Ive had several experiences where someone was praying that I didnt even know about until later... and their prayers made all the difference!xxx
DeleteThe themes are perfect for this year! Currently I am unable to knit or
ReplyDeleteCrochet due to a broken wrist… but I think I can sew fairly well, so that is a good place to start! I like the idea of using up craft items! Challenge accepted! I can’t wait to see what comes of my work this time next year!
If you can sew Matty and have a supply of craft items then you have big possibilities. I love to turn supplies into gifts and useful items. It is just a win win! xxx
DeleteI'm so glad you are going to continue posting your week's progress as it is an encouragement to me all the way in Alabama, USA.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much MamaHen, it really helps me to do it. Like a way to pace myself and review where Im going! I need it!xxx
DeleteHappy New Year, Annabel! (And to everyone here!) I love, love, love your themes for this year...you know I am in complete agreement about keeping your hands busy...it's so wonderful to see just a snippet of your mum's output!! Yes, encouraging one another...but that's exactly what you excel at, which is why we're all here! :) I am so looking forward to seeing how you will expand on your themes all through the year, and I wish you a wonderful year ahead.
ReplyDeleteLots of love,
Jen in Ns
Thank you so much Jen. You are a producer and your hands are always busy! I know you bless many others too. I strongly feel encouragement is needed more than ever! with love Annabel.xxx
DeleteDear Annabelle
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and your family. Your post yesterday has really inspired me. Last year we moved into an over 50 resort after the government resumed our home of 40 years and I have been feeling a bit lost in regard to the direction I wanted to take in relation to my crafting to the pointing of thinking I will just donate all the material I have not used. I have thought about what you have said about idle hands and realised I could not imagine myself doing nothing at all. Your post has made me reflect on what I now want to do and feel I have found my direction. 2024 has been a challenge in year for so many in so many ways but good or bad this is life. I wish you love and peace for this year and thank you for your inspiration.
Louise
Dear Louise, Oh that is terrible about your home! To stop crafting and making would be to be defeated and I do believe that is what they want. To coral us into groups and people have no purpose. So I would do the opposite. We must not give up. No you can sew and make to your hearts content and there is so much need. The less we need to do outside work the more time we have to be busy with our hands. It is very important to keep us well and happy too. With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteThey are lovely themes to start the year with! I am absolutely on board with using craft supplies I already have. I feel like I might have said that before…
ReplyDeleteThe truth is, I have the fabric to make quilts for three of my children. I have bought the wadding. I’ve cut out some squares but I haven’t sewn a single stitch. And I feel guilty every time I see the supplies. (Let’s be honest, those are just the sewing supplies 😬). So I need to actually get the quilts made. I love having craft supplies on hand, but lately I’ve found the amount I have to be too much. I’ve donated quite a bit, and now either need to use what I have or donate more. Even if I picked supplies up on sale, I’m not saving any money if they sit unused.
So I have absolutely no reason for my hands to be idle!!
I hope you have a lovely time with Sidney! Is this the first time he is coming to stay? I’m sure you’ll have lots of nice things planned.
Happy new year everyone, I hope it is an easier one for those who had a challenging 2024.
Jen (NZ)
Dear Jen, I know you can basically make anything so I am confident you can turn all your supplies into gifts and useful things. And also some will be crafts the kids can do too. I had a beautiful time with Sidney and now the weather is hot! I am tired.. hence finally getting to my replies! Also I am emailing you! With love Annabel.xxx
DeleteOh girl, how I love you and your mum, so much! May the Father's hand be everywhere in your lives this new year, and may He, as He has done in the past, use your testimonies to draw others to a closer and more fruitful walk with Jesus. xxxxxxxxxx
ReplyDelete❤️❤️❤️❤️
DeleteDear Annabel
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous example your Mum and Nana gave you and you now share your own wonderful creative gifts with us.
I’ll stop wondering what to do with my wool stash and get crocheting, although it is a bit warm here to be excited about it. If I make the next blanket someone will need it by the time I complete it.
Thankyou for your always thoughtful and thought provoking blog and I wish you and your readers a satisfying and productive year in 2025.
Kate
Dear Annabel, oh my goodness what a beautiful post. I read it last night to let it sink in and now I have read it again. I love it so much. Thank you for this wonderful encouragement and kindness, Annabel. The stories of your Mum....delivering those eggs each week. What a thoughtful, practical way to help others. I love it. I love how your Mum knits for her great grandchildren and everyone else. I treasure everything made, the kids have their own crocheted blankets from their great-great grandmothers. I have my own from my great grandmother. These things are like warm hugs. People can talk about new decor for a room. I like a handmade blanket! It is really beautiful. I love the idea of helping others and keeping my hands busy. It is something I hope to instil in my children too. My Mum's friend volunteers with her, this lady is 87. She volunteers because it gets her out of the house. Then her friend comes in weekly and brings biscuits or cakes and they have morning tea together. Then this same friend does her own grocery shopping and started becoming friends with the trolley collector and now he brings her trolley to the car and helps unpack it. It is like dominoes. This is a beautiful post, Annabel. Thank you. I am still crocheting. But must use up some old fabrics. I am thinking fabric gift bags for birthdays. I am also thinking of saving pockets from jeans. Not sure what for yet! lol Love, Bridget
