Encourage one Another. Add something good.
Following on from my last post on New Years Day... and from the general consensus that 2024 was pretty challenging, I wanted to come up with something extra I could do that would be encouraging.
Now how we give and help others is largely a private thing. Or should be. You see on social media people filming themselves doing something kind and reaping praise. Then these people give each other awards lol. So I don't want to go down that road. Also... I don't give to any charity that has a CEO with a multimillion dollar salary. My gift probably wouldn't pay for their luxury car to be polished. I am just talking about building each other up and encouraging one another, doing what we can.
Vicky mentions to me sending "happy mail." So I jumped on that as it is a lovely way to put it! Mail for no particular purpose other than to brighten someones day! I love to write and I like card making. Very often when I'm tired from work outside I need something I can do inside ie today it is really hot so I have a quieter day... I decided this year I will write at least one happy mail card or letter each week, just so someone has something nice, that is not a bill, in their letter box... that is pretty and cheerful. Like a little gift.
I have made up a box of cards, stamps, small items to pop into an envelope, stickers... so when I have a minute I can grab that and select a few things to put together ready to post.
Helpfulness is a gift. So is keeping someone company. Picking up the groceries, feeding the cat when the neighbours are away... neighbourly things, they are all little acts of kindness that help and encourage someone. Noticing is a gift. Seriously, these days, noticing someone is always on time, always generous, always doing something for others... just saying that you noticed is a thing!
I am sure you are all doing so much already. You have most certainly encouraged me especially since Andy's death. I just noticed my routine has changed, this is some little thing I could include in my week and to do it I just needed to set up a kit to make it easy and to remind me. All these things look so pretty together that I've made it fun for myself as well!
The new year is just a good time to decide to do something different, to add something or to take something away. Add goodness and take away something negative! We need it. The world needs it.
Oh my gosh taking away and adding are a whole new subject. It is years since I took away coffee and cake at a cafe and bought half price pantry items instead and built a pantry. Did you know in Australia is cost $420 a week to smoke a pack a day of cigarettes? Imagine swapping that with something good! (Just a random fact I thought of!) On that note most of the vices are costly and that money could be used for good. But I better get off my soapbox and do good myself! xxx
I love this idea Annabel. Like you, I remember having something arrive in the post just for me when I was a little girl and it was so exciting. A card costs very little to buy and even cheaper to make and can lift the spirits of the one who receives it. It doesn’t have to be for a special occasion either.
ReplyDeleteI have a paper punch in the shape of a little butterfly and I stamp out lots In different colours, Today I gave a gift and card to a little friend who is five and I popped in about 10 little lilac butterflies. Her face was a picture when she opened it and the little butterflies fluttered out.
I can’t wait to hear all your new ideas and those of other Bluebirds.
Thank you for the idea of including paper punch shapes in your cards. I will go tomorrow to buy a paper punch. Love the picture of the little girl watch the butterflies fall from her card!

I Love the idea of sending cards in the mail for no reason! I used to be a prolific letter writer to old friends, but with new technology, social media, etc, it mostly fell by the wayside. I like the idea of making cards, too, especially with pretty photos, like you do! I try to send the Grand kiddos Valentine cards in the mail just for fun, even though they all live close by, but I hadn’t thought of sending them random cards through the year. Same with friends near and far. It’s such a nice way to encourage each other and let them know we’re thinking of and/or praying for them, too! Thank-you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Laura C. (Nana C.)
Beautiful! I want to focus on this too. I used to put confetti in birthday cards - I got so many comments on that - like a party coming out of the card! I love the butterfly idea. Blessings on your New Year, Pam
ReplyDeleteNo one knows what a blessing receiving a note or card is unless you experience being sick or a shut in...........Nancy
ReplyDeleteI don't how we would have gotten through 2024 without all the kindness done for us. Even yesterday while we were out for an appointment and errands there were so many helpful people. I think we have all come through the disaster of Hurricane Helene here with new appreciation for kindness and others.
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of nite cards on a drawer that are doing no one any good tucked away. Tie to get them out and send them to others. After losing three dear friends in 2024 I have not been shy about telling people in our lives how much they mean to us. Some have been taken aback but I want to be sure that everyone knows.
I love the idea of adding joy to the world. It's when someone doesn't expect it, that it makes the biggest difference.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful and lovely idea Annabel
ReplyDeleteI never send mail these days and now you've really got me thinking!
I could do so much more for others.
I've been learning to save seeds recently and gosh there are way too many for one person sometimes. I could post little seed packets to people as a little surprise gift that would be fun!
Thank you Thank you
We can all make it a great year!
Love from Cheryl
Thank you, Cheryl for the seed packet idea. Can't wait to do this as Spring will be approaching soon!

What a lovely post and photos Annabel. This is such a nice idea. I have resolved to maintain more contact with a friend who has an illness which keeps her housebound and instead of sending emails I'm going to replace most of them with pretty cards and just some ' chat' . We all love proper post!
ReplyDeletePenny in the UK.
This is a beautiful idea. I love the box ready to go, and the idea of happy mail is so lovely. Lots of love, Bridget
ReplyDeleteDear Annabel,
ReplyDeleteThis is such a lovely post and your cards, as always, are exquisite. As the kiddos might say cardmaking is my jam. I love making cards and also pretty packaging. There are so many options to do with them. Not only do we have friends and loved ones to send them to, but there are also organizations who send handmade cards out to senior center, nursing homes, the Ronald McDonald House, Hospitalized Veterans, Children's Hospitals. One of those organization is Cards for Kindness. Not only are they in the US but they do have a branch in the UK as well. They do so much good. You can find them online. Imagine, the joy handmade cards can give to people we have never met and are quite likely not to ever meet. Small acts of kindness to those who are in the service industry, like grocery checkers, customer service reps, bus drivers etc. Mostly they're unrecognized and often met with anger on the other end because a customer is upset over something. Just a thank you for your help and if they're wearing a name tag saying their name with the thank you, just recognizing their worth in this world that can be incredibly rude. It doesn't cost a dime. I love the quote "Be the reason someone smiles today." Thanks again for this lovely post. Cookie
You know I love this, Annabel! I agree that a letter can make a big difference in someone’s day. I have a dear friend who lives a few hours away and we don’t get to see each other as often as we’d like. She loves to write letters so writing her is something I want to prioritize this year. She is someone who presently needs a lot of encouragement, as she is dealing with several hardships. I have you to thank for getting me back into card making and for the idea to use book and magazine images. I have acquired some fancier card making tools, but that is still my favorite way!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea sending a card or letter, I feel it's a good idea to replace a negative thing with a positive one.

I got three letters in the mail the other day and my six year old daughter said ‘Oooh lucky!’
ReplyDeleteThey were all boring (bank and insurance), but the only time she gets anything in the mail is on her birthday so she thinks all mail is nice! So definitely sending mail to children will make them feel special!

I LOVE this idea of mailing a card for no reason. My grandkids will love this, not to mention my friends and colleagues. I always try to pay a compliment to someone at work or the store, etc. For me, it is the little things that make my day like a hug from one of my students or a polite cashier at the store. I look forward to reading more of your posts each week.
ReplyDeleteDuring Covid I wrote cards and letters to friends. It made me leave the house to walk to the post box and I know that so few people get personal mail these days that it would be appreciated. The feedback was so lovely. I noticed the other day that the post box has been removed ☹️ so I will have to go further afield.
ReplyDeleteDear Annabel, I'm sure God will bless you doing all these little nice secret cards and sending them on ! I am not a crafty person at all !! I have a cross stitch I really must finish I do a bit then put it down this procrastination has been going on too long !!
ReplyDeleteToday here in Sydney was dreadfully hot even overnight. I had two fans going but not much relief. It is hard to sleep.
I don't know how to manage with food prices even at ALDI just very hard on Centrelink payments.
I bought some mince to make meatballs also, and tuna to make the tuna bake. Fresh veggies and fruit has become more and more expensive ! What a blessing your fruit trees are !! Your hens look very very happy I bet their eggs are just beautiful! Also. Blessing to have your grand kids come visit ! Sidney will remember those cooking lessons with you all his life ! I used to do that with my Nana and she's gone now how I miss her ! She was 95 1/2 like my grand dad when they died they had been on no medicines and all their memory in tact. they had been married 72 years meeting in the Australian Army at around 17/18.
I just love how they loved one another despite many challenges, people just aren't like that today !
My Nana was wise beyond her words, and I love her, my grad dad, my auntie all the days of their lives. She made such simple food but always with a freshly pressed tablecloth , a bowl of fresh salad , and her best tea cups and saucers !! Ah memories !! This year I want to have better health, and live like Nana did ! (I loved that series Annabel ! Happy new year to you and your families!

And teaching our young ones to think of others, that's something we can do too, Annabel. :-) My 8yo granddaughter Cully May writes letters to her Aunty Karen (my eldest daughter) who lives on the other side of the country. Sometimes she includes a picture she's drawn, but her message to her aunt is how much she loves her and misses her, and that she prays for her. Karen has a difficult life, but those letters from Cully May brighten her life like nothing else...and she keeps them all on display because they make her smile. Those small, simple acts, done with care and love...the Lord magnifies them because His love is added too.
ReplyDeleteBtw, what a brilliant post...and I have one to tie in at the end of the week...God at work in us, my precious friend! I love Him so much!!!
Thankyou again Annabel for giving us food for thought for 2025.
ReplyDeleteI had thought my mantra this year would be Strive to thrive in 25 but now I think I'll add Cookies quote as well: Be the reason someone smiles today.
Thankyou all Bluebirds I don't comment much but never miss a post.
We all have so much to offer and You Annabel are an inspiration to us all.
Cheers Bevo.
Thank you for the lovely post, Annabel. And dear Bluebirds, she not only shares happy mail, but happy email!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to brag on Annabel for a minute ladies. I mentioned weeks ago that my husband's health has broken. He is clearly in the early stages of vascular dementia. Several ladies encouraged me in the comments. Thank you! And you even prayed for me. Bless you. But Annabel went one step further. She emailed me a heart felt letter of encouragement. She was very transparent about some difficulties of her own.
The email was even printed in a lovely blue script! Thank you Annabel for loving me! For loving us all! You continue to bless us despite your losses: your dad, Mimi, Laine, and of course, Andy. Thank you, dear lady!
May God pour forth many blessings upon you in 2025.
And Happy Birthday 🎂.
Love,
Leslie in Ohio
Beautiful sentiments Leslie, Annabel really is one very special lady 🩵 From Cheryl
DeleteHappy Birthday Annabel. Chloe's cake is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt's cold and very windy in Upstate New York, seeing pictures of apricot jam, cucumbers and fresh garden produce of any kind is a treat for the eyes. I have five months to wait until my garden can be planted, so enjoying the season of rest and it's greatly appreciated.
I love the farm pictures, watching Justice grow warms my heart. Someday, the lamb will lie down with the lion. God's promise to all who believe.
I have great plans for today, and if my old body goes along with my thoughts, I'll have a clean house, fresh bread, some cookies to munch on and a project going in my sewing room. Fingers crossed .
Blessings to all the Bluebirds, prayers for the heartbreak and suffering in the world.
