Feather your Nest Friday, 22nd November, 2024.

Writing the date at the top of the post I realised we are basically a month before Christmas!  Luckily I have been working on things for a few weeks and for those of you who are part of The Tuesday Afternoon Club you know we have been working hard all year!  Now we reap the benefits.   I have been able to put together gift after gift from the things I've made.

Also the Christmas cakes are wrapped now and all of these are gifts as well.

I (overall) went much slower this week and had quieter afternoons which I used to write cards,  wrap gifts and do lots of small jobs like sorting out my card drawer.

I am very consciously trying to make everything festive and cheerful.

Going through my present cupboard and stash I found I already have twenty five wash cloths made for the children's shoe boxes for next year.

Because of making an effort to have some downtime I decided to TRY and learn a round wash cloth pattern, inspired by Cath.  Last week she showed on her you tube channel (The Cheapskates Club) the things she has been making for Christmas.  It included lovely flower like wash cloths.  I cannot read a pattern to save myself but I can follow along a video.   So I tried a couple patterns.   It is good for the brain to have to figure out something new!  Also fun!

I have worked one more since in another pattern.  I will try and learn one by heart to I can stop looking back at the tutorials!

Today is hot.  It's not great.  I have gone to doing my outdoor work in sections about 15 minutes at a time.  I have four sections of veggie garden,  chooks x 3,  Justice,  regular garden, fruit trees etc.  I get them done in bursts.   A lot of the garden is looking good and my herb towers are quite full.

The new beds,  the old bath and trough, are doing so well but they get battered by wind on a day like today.  On Monday my helpers will be here and we are building a fence of hay bales to be a wind break.   After my crops are finished the bales will feed the cows,  if needed.

My cactus is flowering again.  I did not really care for cactus until I realised the flowers!!

My cook up was making multiple chicken schnitzel meals,  lemon and sour cream were added.   I made a family meal for Chloe and two dinners for myself.

Mum came for afternoon tea and so her GF scones were made for her to take home.

Justice is doing well.  It is hard to get a good photo of her as she likes being in her house and her face is always covered in milk.  However she runs to me now, skips and gallops.   Next week she is being promoted to the orchard yard which has heaps of grass and running around room.   I just need my bales in place to protect my pumpkins and zucchini...   then I will move her.

Also my last lot of chickens were promoted into the main hen house.  I should be set for hens for a few years.   There are two main houses so all my eggs are not in the one basket!

Another thing on my to do list... as summer is almost here I know that a couple of times when there has been a really hot day I have kept chickens alive by having a sprinkler on.  I need two new sprinklers and connections to have on hand in case.  I HOPE we don't get it that hot but it has happened.

How are you going with Christmas plans?  How did you build up your home, pantry or garden this week?

For those who watch Appalachia's Homestead Patara said we need to keep some energy in the tank.  We have all been working so hard as we see the need.  But what if we need some spare gas in that tank?  So I am interested in how you manage your time and energy so you have some reserves if you need them!  Share away! (Please!) xxxx

  2. What a busy week, I hope you are feeling better. We need to take care of ourselves, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, or we won't be able to take care of our families.

The Lord gave us permission to rest, He gave us a Sabbath and told us what to do on that day.

"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." Exodus 20:8-11

I tell people Saturday is our day off; we don't do anything other than the necessary chores - watering, make the bed, do the dishes. We don't work. No floors are swept or laundry done. No cooking if I can help it, I try to prepare ahead. We rest. That could mean me pottering in the peace of the garden or making cards with friends, it could be sitting on a riverbank reading a book or finishing off a Bible study, or enjoying a lunch with friends.

These things soothe my soul and mind, and give me the energy to face the week ahead, and the energy to care for my family and our home.

I know that if I don't get my day off, the week ahead is hard work, harder than it needs to be.

Don't ever feel guilty for taking time for yourself, whether you're an empty nester or a young mother with babies, or a couple or a single, young, old or middle aged. We need to rest, and rest completely so we can do the work we need to do.

    1. Yes I do agree. I think our immune systems suffer if we dont take our day off and we dont get time to think over, review, relax and make new plans. Kids even need it. They can be very over scheduled and need a day completely off. Good advice!xxx

  3. Annabel your fruit cakes look so beautiful wrapped up! They are really expensive in shops (even the supermarket versions), I imagine whoever you give them to will be thrilled!

I have been knitting cloths for gifts too, I tried a new pattern and it came out well but I have a favourite pattern that I still prefer. Teacher gifts this year will be a couple of cloths with a boxed soap.

I’ve used up a lot from the fridge this week, vegetables in self-crusting quiche, fruit in muffins etc. I have some lemons and egg yolks to use up so I’ll make some lemon curd this weekend.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and it doesn’t get too hot.

    1. Dear Jen, The teacher gifts will be great! I think a homemade gift is the best. I think I need to do a quiche like that... I have the eggs and cream... this would be good. We had some rain today (Wednesday) like a proper downpour! This is a major relief! I dont have to water for a couple of days. I agree when we check the stores and prices it is a shock. In a handmade store last year a fruit cake (homemade) was $90. I am not kidding! So now I made my cakes smaller and made many more less expensive gifts too but I am so pleased to have gifts made! Hope your week is going well! With love Annabel.xxx

  4. I have set aside afternoons for quiet work —- 2-3 pm every day. That makes me rest and I get things accomplished. I have started going to bed with a book at 8 pm because tv is vacuous, but Mister is addicted. I’m usually lights out in an hour or so. And, I listen to the news once a day! It is emotionally draining. Your calf is darling! All legs! ❤️❤️

She comes running to me. When she is another 100kilos this might become intimidating lol! With love Annabel.xxx

  5. Dear Annabel, Christmas is very close but, luckily, almost all my gifts are done, some of the handmade ones started very early in the summer, as I knew I had to snick them between the knitting comissions and gardening. That I have learned from you!
Justice is beautiful and I loved reading about your plans re. the orchard, garden, home and animals. You had a good week!

This week was my son*s birthday and we had a nice big pizza evening at home, a vet meeting with my little Charlie - he is now under treatment - and the same working hours for all of us. Finally this weekend I will put away my dehydrator, the apples were a big hit for my husband this autumn - I have gathered almost all the windfall apples and dried them, the rest were given to the chickens, nothing went to waste. My chickens, by the way, went on striking. Not one egg for the entire week. For their excuse, it is cold and dark almost constantly, but I have, somehow, count on the younger ones. They are exceptionally beautiful now.
Today was snowing all day - the snow was above ankle high in the morning, so good thing I have greenery saved for them, pumpkins and dried nettles. Also corn and black sunflower seeds, and kitchen scraps. The ducks are eating very little food, but constant water. And they are very funny, friendly and gorgeous.

With all this snow I will start making home bread - nothing beats the smell of fresh bread in the house in the winter. For my relaxation, in the evenings, I knit a green blouse for me - it is thin, delicate and it will be a nice one in the spring. Also, I plan to combine it with crochet around the neck. Keeps my brain on tip-toe trying something new.
Regarding spare gas/energy - I am quite low. Busy days at work and cold dark hours don*t help much. Also the news....

Have a nice weekend ahead, sending good wishes from very far away, Laura_s_world from Romania

    1. Dear Laura, Well done on having your Christmas gifts almost all done! It is really good now having both younger and older chickens. I have the same. This means we are set for several years. With the cold and darkness it would not be very motivating for egg laying! You feed and look after them so well.
The dried apple and putting all the apples to good use... I love this. My apple tree is looking promising. Every animal loves the cores, seeds, peels... I have to take turns on who gets what. The ducks I think would have solved your snails and slugs problems!
You are working long hours it is no wonder your energy is low. Try and look after your immune system... The bread baking and the comfort things of winter like soups are very good. I look forward to seeing this green top! Also... I like to have a different project to absorb my mind and keep my hands busy. To be both productive and calmed by handwork is such a good thing.
I already have a great amount to report for this week! I love having something good to report or some progress! With much love Annabel.xxx

  6. Keeping some energy in the tank is good advice. I just wish we could do it! Hubby has had eight weeks now of hurricane clean up here and it has made him so tired. We are getting close to being back to as good as it will get so I hope he can get more rest.

    1. Dear Lana, I cant even imagine how so many have mess to clean up, re building, repairs... Well done to your husband for working so hard on it. I think energy in the tank might be like spare meals in the freezer. In bad times they all get used up! But then we need to rebuild to be ready for next time we need them. I am glad you are getting near the end of the clean up work. Also Happy Thanksgiving! With love Annabel.xxx

  7. A couple of autoimmune diseases have forced me to learn to pace myself over the past few years and they have also forced me to have more patience as I cannot get everything done in a day or two as I used to do - now it might take a week - but it all gets done eventually. Occasionally I give myself a complete day off - did that last Saturday - made a pot of soup and did a wee tidy up but after that it was feet up and a new library book - along with very limited online distractions - and it really helped.

Today is payday and I have already allocated funds for Gift Cards, Christmas treats and extra food for a get-together that I am hosting for friends on Dec. 7th. I will mostly be handing out Christmas cards as I see people this year because Canada Post has gone on strike!! My first batch will go to my theatre group of friends when we will all be together next Saturday - I'll give out more on Dec. 7th and then slowly give to others as I see them throughout the month. I really only have a couple of gifts to buy and I try to make them "experiences" so I am on the lookout for something fun to do or tickets to buy. I do have two large bottles of vanilla essence that I need to get into small gift bottles which will be token gifts for some girlfriends.

I will do some decorating the first week in December but since I live in a small apt. I don't overdo things - there just isn't room. I really try to enjoy the season more now and not get overwhelmed by it all and most of my friends feel the same way!

Have a wonderful week - hope the heat isn't too bad.

  9. Love the cactus flower ! It’s so pretty . Justice is doing so well under your loving care . Had to giggle when you said two hen houses not all eggs in one basket ! Hubby had a laugh at that too 😊
Doing one more thing ,as a friend of ours use to say , kept you going through all your farm jobs as well as in-house cooking . Give yourself a huge pat on the back and remember to rest in stages . Over the last 6 weeks I’ve had to slow down after a fall hurting my ankle , and we have two sets of stairs , it has taken some thinking to stop myself using them as much as I have . Am so grateful I started doing gifts early for my family and local girlfriends . I’ve had to be careful how much I use my hands as much as my feet so I started early looking in sales . I have limoncello to decant for a few gifts . Baking for my family housework and now summer is almost here has hit us both out tidying the garden which is very damp snd shady in winter .
We rest in stages doing this .
One main thing I’ve learnt over the last 6 weeks is how little I rested in the past and how I can think more clearly and have been more motivated to do lots of in-house jobs in stages . So all interior glass windows got cleaned . Cupboards , cabinets , spare pantry and emergency stores got sorted and rehoused . And my family’s gift bags with cards are mostly done now .
Eldest grandson has just turned 13.and is now doing baking most weekends . Initially I was getting lots is texts on Saturday mornings about recipes or problems with .
Our four grandies are interested that I can make recipes from scratch so the list is growing . Butterscotch snd chocolate sauces , French vanilla and also chocolate chip peppermint ice cream , youghurt chocolate cake is their favourite . Haha can you see we have a lot of sweet toothed members . Meat lovers pizza , mince snd cheese pie , lasagna ate their favourite meals . The three eldest come fur dinner once a week . It has been a trying year with family things , we are riding the waves as best we can . Wishing you all good health , joy and peace , love Maria xx

    1. Dear Maria, Yes... just do one extra thing. I think of Mimi very often. I am sure you were the inspiration for your Grandsons baking. You have some obvious good gifts to give him to encourage him further even. It is hard to believe the eldest is now 13! You are inspiring them all! I hope your ankle is improving. These things can be very slow as it is so hard to give them rest. Sit with it up when you sit as Im sure elevation helps. You are well ahead on your home being lovey and gifts being made early. From all the interest I think next year a recipe book of your best recipes and some photos and extras could be a wonderful gift for these Grandchildren! With love Annabel.xxx

  10. Dear Annabel and beautiful bluebirds
Annabel I’m sorry I haven’t commented for quite awhile , it’s been a rough year for my family health wise but hopefully 2025 will be better .
    I just love justice , gorgeous !.
I thought I had been slack this year but I realised in the last month or so I’ve made about 30 cards ,I’ve given a lot of them away as a thank you present and a birthday present .
I went through a Christmas box last night and found about 25 cards that I’d made last year and forgotten about ! .
About 17 of the cards are Christmas as cards so now I’m sick with another sinus infection I can’t just conserve energy and write in the cards .
I received a gift card from a supermarket as an early Christmas gift so that has helped my budget because I have had a lot of medical expenses .
I broke my glasses while in hospital recently so I’m going on Tuesday for an eye test and thankfully my health fund extras will cover some of the cost of the glasses . It’s well worth the $53 a month I pay as that covers 4 health professionals . I use mine for physiotherapy , podiatrist , optical and dental , although I haven’t used my dental cover this year so I’ve lost out there .
I received 5 individual containers of spaghetti bolognese from a friend and her husband this week. They are an amazing couple , she’s just had spinal cord stimulator surgery two weeks ago and he has back and knee problems and other health issues too . They receive no support work help so are trying to do everything themselves but still thinking of me. We have pretty much unofficially adopted each other as sisters ! .
She has a lot of the medical conditions I have so understands me completely .
I was able to make a donation to a local charity which helps homeless people and others in need in my area , this was last week .
I donated a big bag of grocery non perishables from my pantry of foods I no longer eat ( all in date ) and a couple of gifts for Christmas picked up at bargain prices and some rulers for their back to school drive . I got the rulers for 10 cents each at Cole’s supermarket months ago .
I have most of my Christmas shopping done . I just need to buy a gift voucher / card for one of my nieces because I used the one I had put away for Christmas for her year 12 graduation gift .
I was very sad to read about Laine Annabel sending you hugs xx

,I’m sorry I haven’t been in touch sooner but as you know I’m having major technology problems.
My beautiful friend whose husband made the meals for me is going to help me over the weekend to solve some of those issues.
I paid my computer guy $120 last week and just can’t afford to have him come back yet ( that is cheap too !!)
Thinking of all the bluebirds across the world , may you have a beautiful weekend and week xx

Tech issues are a giant pain and frustrating. I had some myself. I had to get a new phone and now trouble with my iPad. Lucky I have my lap top too. Having that health cover is very good. I get $200 off glasses each year and try to use these things. Considering the year you've had I think you are doing very well Barb! With love Annabel.xxx

  11. Hello again Annabel and bluebirds 🪺

You certainly sound like you need to slow down a bit Annabel. Give yourself grace, it’s been a very emotional year, and as you approach the one year mark the emotional toll will be even greater 🙏 💜

I was happy with my progress this week. I had been raising Zinnia seedlings from seed and this week was time to plant them, so I got them in the ground and it has rained every day since! I was so pleased for the rain to establish them well.

I made onion jam to be given as Christmas gifts. I made yet another triple batch of pesto for the freezer, truly I think I might let the Bazil go to seed now, the plants are way too generous this year! LOL

I made a yummy batch of peanut butter jam drops. I haven’t made these for years and I had forgotten how good they are!

I am harvesting chives, zucchini, cucumber, Bazil and parsley from the garden.

I’ve made a small start on the Christmas shopping after a trip to a local craft market last weekend.

Finally I made time to sew myself a new apron! It’s a project I’ve wanted to do for ages, and since it rained all week I spent one afternoon drafting a pattern and sewing it up. I made it from a vintage bed sheet! I think it’s beautiful. I’ll post a photo on The Tuesday afternoon club next week.

Take care everyone. As we slide into December remind yourself of the reason for the season and let that keep you grounded in all the crazy that can be happening.

    From Cheryl 💜

Your apron was the prettiest. Did you see Cath mentioned it in her you tube show! You have been so productive and with sewing planting, baking, harvesting and preserving... you have it all going on! Pesto is just so good. It is like a vitamin pill but and great to have in the freezer. It makes a beautiful pizza base, instead of tomato too. My basil is almost ready to start harvesting but I have heaps more planted as the warmer weather it really gets going. I agree we must enjoy the season and appreciate it all. 12. Hello Annabel and everyone,

I'm so happy that Justice is doing well! Your Christmas cakes and mail look so cheery, and your food delicious as always. What a beautiful cactus flower, too.

This week I did some baking, crafting (knitting and cross stitch finishing), a small cook up, planted my spring bulbs, and made a pantry stock up trip to the price club. The carpets all need a good shampooing, so I may try to make inroads on that this weekend and start making a plan for my Christmas baked goods to give.

It is a beautiful but also difficult time of year. I've started going through the things I've made and was pleasantly surprised to have several knitted gifts and packages of handmade soap and cards tucked away. And seed packets for gardening friends/neighbors. A trip to the dollar tree shop for cellophane sweets bags or tins may be in order - I had the thought to make up some fancy sugar cubes and package those with a teacup and spoon or box of tea for small gifts.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Cellophane bags and little tins etc do help with presentation so much! It seems to me people are thrilled we thought of them and a small gift blesses people. I finally having suitable moulds to make your sugar cubes. You just gave me the idea on how to present them! I am planning on making them when the girls are here. 13. Dear Annabel, you have been through so much this year. It would be hard to have any in the tank at all, because even though you have gone so much you still keep on giving to others.
I’m trying to build some reserves by staying home more. I need to focus on here. I also try and exercise a few times a week (again at home, YouTube is so helpful). This strengthens me physically and I feel mentally too. I think learning new things like crochet patterns etc is helpful too. I love Justice. She is thriving. There is a fine line where it's too much, I get too behind, I feel really stressed and things are out of control. Also I have the distance factor but if you can merge several errands into one outing this seems to help a lot. If you want to try any flower dish cloths the you tube is Creative Grandma... she has several to choose from and if I can follow anyone can. They are fun to do and use up little bits. Right now I am about to make up four lasagnes! So that is my cook up this week! With love Annabel.xxx

  16. Keeping some energy in the tank--what a good topic for me right now. I hadn't planned to write this now, but my husband of 56 years is currently in hospice and not expected to live more than a few days longer. He went to the emergency room at the hospital about 4 weeks ago and they immediately found a mass in his pelvis that proved to be late-stage non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. He was in the hospital for 15 days and now is receiving hospice care.

Fellow bluebirds, besides a broken heart, I am utterly and completely exhausted. Even when he is gone (and he is not doing well) I still have a 48-year-old daughter who is developmentally disabled and now living with me.

Thank you for reminding me of the importance of a day of rest. I am going to really work on this, including not cooking. I had recently started freezing single and two-serves of leftovers and this will help a lot. Also, these last 4 weeks of driving a lot at night, especially when the streets are wet, have told me I am going to cut back on night and/or poor weather driving. It is just too stressful. At the same time, I need to keep up friendships so I don't become a hermit.

I know this has been a difficult time for Annabel, Kathy, Hilogene and others whose names elude me at the moment, as well as Cheryl over at Cheryl's Frugal Corner. This is a club I never wished to join...but here I am, tired and exhausted and nearly there. Annabel, I never got any Christmas gifts made, but due to your urging I am almost finished buying presents. Thank you.

  17. Hi Annabel
Your cactus flower is gorgeous as are your wrapped cakes. Presentation is so important isn't it. I'm glad you are making a conscious effort to make things feel festive and fun, we all need that currently I think. I have been thinking very much of Laura in Romania after reading her comment, I empathise with the feeling of gloom, the northern hemisphere winter can be hard and world events are scary. I feel I am holding hands with lovely Bluebird friends across the miles.
Well ,we have had our preparedness tested properly this week. Heavy snow blocked the roads out of here so we hunkered down at home. This was followed by Storm Bert which raged for two days with torrential rain and winds. Fortunately we do not flood but parts of the UK are in real trouble. The storm took our power out and it's just been restored today.
Thank goodness for our prep! We had plenty of food, dog food, firewood, candles, matches, oil in the Rayburn, batteries etc. We have an open fire and a wood burner in another room and the Rayburn doesn't need electricity and provides heat, cooking and hot water in the kitchen. The grey gloom made me feel a bit down so I counted my blessings furiously and do appreciate how dire things are in some parts of the world. We did find a couple of gaps in the prep, we couldn't find our wind up torch and the camping lantern we've relied on in the past was kaput and we hadn't tested it before the storm. Rookie error! We've now ordered more but basically everything went according to plan and we were warm, safe, well fed etc.
    Hope all Bluebirds are ok.

Good idea to cut back on the night driving, you must stay safe particularly when you are so tired. Sending you a hug.
