Feather your Nest Friday, 8th March, 2024.

Get a cup of tea,  that is my advice.  It was a big week but I am happy to report wonderful things. 🩷

I will try to be somewhat chronological and restrain myself to include the little things...

Some apples are ready.   The side of the tree that gets the most sun is ready and they are just beautiful.   This is good as it will spread out the work over a few weeks,  at least.

The first thing I made was Outback Tania's Apple cake.

I made it with gluten free flour for Mum and me.  It was lovely.

Since Andy died something Mum has done is make me sandwiches.  She brings me a bag of ham sandwiches to which go into the freezer.  For the first few days I lived on those.  On Saturday she still arrived with more.  I get one out,  add cheese or pineapple or tomato (whatever I have) and put them in the sandwich press.   What a saviour this has been at times.

Last week I mentioned I have a cutting out mat and table now.  Setting this up started a domino style series of cleaning and re arranging.  Firstly,  having the cutting out table meant I got to some sewing.  Just a little.   I finished up the kitchen towel panels.

I finished the waffle weave... it made two bath sheets and three kitchen towels.

All of the above went into the gift cupboard.

Back to the cleaning and organising.   My second fridge is mainly for drinks but it gets used for a little of everything.  It was a really bad mess inside.   Something had spilled and I tried to ignore it for the time being but finally I emptied it and washed the whole thing out.  There is something surprisingly uplifting about a pristine fridge. Like sparkling windows... they both affect how we feel about life more than you can ever believe!

Oh a high from success I decided to tackle my bras and undies drawer.  Because I basically have everything black this drawer is hard to find anything in.  I pulled it all out and started again.   I ended up with plenty of good and well fitting items but I got rid of a huge pile of things that don't fit/don't feel right/are torture or worn out.

Then I started on dresses.   Living on a farm for five years my need for cocktail dresses,  formal wear...  all a waste of space.  I kept the dresses I wore to the girls weddings (which are gorgeous!) and my wedding dress and all the rest is hopefully going to help the new op shop in town.

Then I went through shoes.  Same as above more or less.  And I found I am well ahead on leather boots which is what I actually wear day to day on the farm.

My hallway still has all these bags of stuff lined up to go next week.   I can't believe how much!

In town the swap table gave me a small bucket of Garlic Chive plants.  I potted these up in two pots that needed something.

Also in town I found a set of brand new Sheridan cotton single bed sheets plus a separate package of matching Quilt cover and pillowcases for $15 each.  Both of these had been over $200.   Beautiful quality pure cotton set... this will give me the linen for the boys room I am setting up.

For $1 I found this beautiful jug...

It was my lucky day!

I visited my friend who also lost her husband last year.   Her husband was a Pastor and he played an important part in our lives and faith. He married Chloe and Luke.  He died suddenly,  next to the ride on lawn mower,  while she had her Grandchildren staying... plus a long list of other similarities to what happened here.    I thought I would be ok but I cried the whole time.   Dean led a lot of people to God and helped hundreds.  I came away with a book to buy,  a movie to watch and something to look up online.

When I got home I ordered the book,  downloaded the video and looked up the story of an eight year old girl who painted what she said was her vision of Jesus. I had seen this and heard about it before somewhere along the way.   The movie is called Heaven is Real.  It is based on a true story and this is linked to the painting of Jesus by the little girl.  Like two testimonies that overlap.   Since watching the movie I followed up with watching the father and son depicted in the movie.  The Dad is still a Pastor and the son (who is a little boy in the movie)  is a young man now.  Apart from fellowship with a friend it was like having homework that was good for me.

I made myself a meal with my garden tomatoes...

My cactus is not meant to be flowering (according to the man I bought it from) but it is anyway...

I made two meals for the freezer.   Really, I just assembled them.  Meatballs, cherry tomatoes, some pasta sauce and some cheese.   These just go into the oven then are served over pasta.  Easy!

I made some little gift cards using what was left of the calendar.

And some swing tags...

I packaged these up into sets for the gift cupboard.

I have continued to have beautiful cards and gifts arrive in the mail.   Thank you so much.   All of your prayers and encouragement have really been continuous and improved every single day.

Now I have to tell a short story before I tell the next one.   Background...

Years ago when I was a single Mum to Chloe and Lucy it was my dream to adopt a little girl from India.  I put the dream into a true full effort and went through approval, family studies and over twenty thousand in fees and legal fees.   If I lived 200 kilometres east of where I did it would not have been a problem but I didn't want to move away from my family.  Our state would not allow me.  With help I managed to change two small parts of the legislation but I never succeeded.  It was a decade before I gave it up.  It became too heart breaking to keep going.   In that time I had a vision of a green field with one solitude Lily.  So I had picked the name Lily and had many dreams of my little Lily.

Now to the next bit...   As you know Chloe was due to have her baby this week!   Wednesday morning Chloe was in early labor.  I felt quite anxious and had for days.  Normally I don't feel quite as anxious but the year hasn't exactly been stellar and my nerves are not great.    So at lunch time when I got a text from Chloe I was thinking it was an update and quickly looked at my phone...  but the baby had been born!
She is Lily May!

Chloe sent a text that said when she was pregnant she had a vision of a Lily in a sea of long grass... and knew the baby (which she knew was a girl) had to be Lily.

This is a photo at only a few minutes old.

So I am blessed with my Lily,  we all are.  💗

Chase is a little bit small to really understand but Tom took over.

Tomorrow they are coming home!  Yesterday and today I worked at Chloe's refreshing the fridge,  adding Mum's touch and today Mum came and she polished and did Nana things until everything sparkled.   It is hot so I watered her garden also.   My schedule tomorrow is to make a lovely first night home meal and deliver it hot at 5 45.   (It takes me about 5 minutes to drive to Chloe's.)  Then I get to see Lily and them all!

For hanging on this long you get to see Lily's nursery. 😊

The little cardigan on top Mum made for my girls and they both wore it.   The linen underneath is embroidery I did years ago...  that is a tiny pram cover.

Her shelf has a photo of Mummy and Chloe in my garden when they were about five and three.  A tiny photo of me when I was four (I hated having short hair) and a bear I embroidered.

The cot has an embroidered blanket I made.

The china and teddy are all things from Chloe and Lucy's nurseries.

It is all full of memories and loveliness.  And Lily looks just like Chloe did and looks straight into your eyes.

There is a man working on the new fence.

Andrew and his friend have been working on the house on the hill.  This week it got a new laundry floor.  Over the year this will add up to a very good house that I could rent out/have a part time care taker type deal ... I am not sure.  I just know it needs to be brought into good order and the rest will follow.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement to keep going.
Tomorrow is going to be hot.  So much for Autumn!   I have had a lesson and know how to turn on the overhead fire sprinkler system with or without electricity.   It turns out it is easy.   Andy had it all set up. He did a wonderful job on this system.  Everyone who comes here is impressed.   Andy loved when I mentioned him or what he had been doing on the blog.  On hot days like tomorrow this sprinkler system is so reassuring.   You see, this proves,  the things we are doing now will count later.  Maybe for one person or maybe for generations.

How did you build up your home, pantry or garden this week?   Keep going.  Don't give up.xxx

  1. Dear Annabel, congratulations! Congratulations to Chloe, Luke and you all on the birth of precious Lily. I LOVE her name. You and your Mum are wonderful to help out. This is so thoughtful and also very inspiring. You had me at the talk of Andy with the sprinkler work. You are right- these positive acts affect your family for years/generations. What a wise man Andy was.
I’m glad you could really chat with your friend who could understand emotionally.
I loved seeing your embroidery work, it’s delightful.
    Lots of love, Bridget

    1. Dear Bridget, Thank you! Bridge it is true, our work can be very far reaching! We underestimate this all! Today it is so hot and there are gale force winds. It's a shocking fire danger day. Andys overhead sprinkler system gives me so much re assurance. Plus the generator! Plus all the work clearing dead trees and all the bonfires we had over five years to clean the place up. All these things today I am thinking about and thankful for. Also Chloe and Luke brought Lily home. I am off to meet her later and deliver dinner. But meantime Im trying to stay out of the heat. Have a lovely weekend! Love Annabel.xxx

  2. Hearty congratulations Annabel! I’ve been checking all day to see if you had an update. And in my heart, I had a strong feeling that you would be welcoming a beautiful granddaughter. Unreal how lives of people we have never met, can touch our own. I’ve been reading your blog from the start, and often catch myself thinking more in creative ways, than would usually do. So very pleased for you all. Much love and gentle hugs. Thank you for being you xo

  3. Annabel those apples look so perfect! How I would love to bite into one, knowing it is home grown and fresh!! What a huge blessing, your hard work in watering, mulching and caring for them has certainly paid dividends!

We all know you are an industrious person and someone who can’t (and probably doesn’t like to sit still too long) reading between the lines I can tell that character trait is helping you in this time of uncertainty and grief ❤️ Seeing you staying focused and keeping busy in spite of your circumstances is humbling to me, to me you are a true Titus woman…setting an example for the younger generation even in your darkest hour. God bless you for this 🙏

Finally congratulations on the safe arrival of little Lily May, what a sweetie she is. I see old soul eyes there .

  6. Welcome Lily, God blessed you with a beautiful family. Annabel your week sounds delightful and you achieved so much, no one would have known you were anxious. I've finished preserving the tomatoes this week. Picked rosemary and dried it. Found a new pattern for a tea towel topper that I quite like. Prepared big salads for the weekend, pasta salad coleslaw, potato salad and a new to us cabbage salad. Boiled 2 dozen eggs, washed and dried lots of lettuce and pickled red onions and made a huge jelly and a big fruit salad in preparation for the heatwave. Oh and froze lots of water for ice cubes. The garden has had a nice long, soaking drink too. Cath xxx

  8. How uncanny that your friends husband died in the same circumstances as Andy. I hope it helps to have someone to share emotions who really understands what it is like for you.
Your Mum had a great idea to bring you sandwiches which could quickly be made into toasties, they're a lifesaver when things get too busy or stressed.
And you have baby Lily in your lives! All good wishes to the whole family.
During this hard time you have things to look forward to.
The embroidered blanket! I'm speechless with admiration.
This week I soaked and cooked the rest of our homegrown borlotti beans and froze portions. My husband didn't understand why I was so pleased and asked what I meant when I said I was getting ahead. He was out at work while I was cooking. When I explained how long you have to soak the beans and then cook them he understood! Now they're ready to go.
We are steadily moving towards future proofing this house so we can age in place. We have a lovely old wooden chair which belonged to my husbands grandfather and its joints were coming apart and more skill was needed than my husbands woodwork. We had it taken apart and reassembled by a furniture maker and now my husband can sit comfortably in it beside our new woodburner. It's so comfy and an investment for the future. We laugh at how old fashioned our home is in many ways but we appreciate quality over newness and we're comfortable.
I continue to declutter and keep finding useful things, this week it was fabric and theads I'd forgotten I had. I've donated more bags to the charity shop and reorganised cupboards so I can see what we have.
Thank you for continuing to post Annabel.

I am in love with the picture with Tom holding his baby sister - his smile means everything. And the baby room is beautiful!

In my part of the world Spring is very close. The weather was so fine that we could do some garden jobs, cleaning and planning. and a big bonfire in the evening with all the branches gathered. We also planted two plum trees and I was happy that my husband and my son were planting it together - memories for life!

  12. What a week! Congratulations to the whole family on the safe arrival of Lily May! My step-grandma's name was Lily and it's such a lovely name that you don't hear very much these days. She is lovely and will be very well loved - lucky little girl.

You are keeping very busy and I find during difficult times that this is important. It would be too easy to totally give into grief - and while it is important to take the time to grieve - it is also important to keep to some sort of routine. You are doing an amazing job in this regard.

How lovely of your mom to think of the sandwiches - some days that's all we can manage and adding some simple ingredients are a great way to keep going and at least get some healthy food.

Enjoy your visit with Lily and the boys and I hope that the heat won't be too intense this early in the season. Take care of yourself.

  15. You had a productive, exciting and very blessed week, my dear friend. Lily is beautiful and her nursery is truly exquisite. How wonderful to have all those heirlooms to share with her.
I worked on cleaning out various areas and drawers in the house, this week, also. I have quite a ways to go, but am starting to get my energy back, Praise God.
Tomorrow, Saturday, we are having the whole family over to celebrate our son's birthday. Time flies by quickly. He is eligible for retirement in five years. This year, it is my desire, to have special birthday celebrations for every family member.
I have been assessing our capabilities, due to age and health, in order to eliminate that which is not necessary. We will cut back our planting, this year, for a twofold reason. It is time to give four of the 3x20 foot beds a sabbatical. We will nourish those all summer with compost and comfrey, so they are nutrient rich for next year. Plus, I am only able, at this point, to do so much, so I will focus on the medicinal herb garden and expand that, along with the produce we use most. We have three 3x40 ft beds that are not due for their year of rest yet.
Other organic produce items are plentiful and haven't gone up that much, so we will purchase those and dehydrate or can them.I am trying to get back to basic simplicity in all aspects of life.
    With much love,

I hope the family celebration goes wonderfully. And I think having celebrations when we can is very valuable. I am so glad you feel you are getting energy back. Energy is everything!
I am going to have to find many more simple ways also. I have been thinking on that a lot. I have to re think many things being on my own now. I still mean to be well prepared and grow what I can... but I will have to be smarter and more efficient. Also like you I will swoop on good deals... and preserve. Thank you for your continued encouragement. With much love, Annabel.xxx

That’s beautiful that you dreamed of having a Lily and now you do. How wonderful it will be for Chloe to arrive home to a sparkling clean house, hot meal and loving family. I’m so happy for you all.

The rest of your post is lovely too, beautiful sewing and the jug you found is so you! You’ve been really productive this week, I love a good clean out of things we don’t use. I need to take about 6 boxes of stuff to the op shop this weekend. I liked your description of bras that are torture - they definitely need to go lol.

We have a long weekend here and I feel like we really need it. Every room of my house needs some love. And we need some extra rest lol. I’m really enjoying my job, and I’ve continued to bake and cook from scratch etc, but it’s a real adjustment in terms of managing time and energy!! I’m actually really excited to get stuck in to the house, I know that doing that will make me feel way more on top of things.

Annabel I know that being able to cook meals, help with the boys and having lots of baby cuddles will bring you such joy in the next few weeks. It is truly so lovely to read of your happiness when caring for your family. From your beautiful embroidery in Lily’s room to the many containers of puréed fruit you’ll be filling Chloe’s freezer with, there are so many examples of how you show love for your family. It’s even more inspirational given how difficult this time is for you. I hope the love and prayers being sent from all around the world bring you some comfort.

Enjoy your weekend and all the newborn cuddles!!

    1. Celie, Thank you! Yes Andy did a great job on the overhead system. It puts out so much water over the house and quite a distance out onto the lawn as well. It is worth more than gold! Thank you for you kind words, with love Annabel.xxx

  34. Annabel I am so glad you got to fellowship with your friend and came home feeling more uplifted along with all the lovely cards you have received from friends that have done likewise. Wow you got so much done with your sewing, cooking, making cards and sorting out your dresses, shoes and underwear and it is amazing what hides in the drawers. Congratulations on becoming a grandmother again and to Chloe too for the arrival of beautiful Lily and such a parallel with you had with your vision too.
Like yourself we have been on cleaning, decluttering and organising in the home and have cleaned the herbs and spices cupboard and I shelf lined the top, the dishes and cups cupboard and lined the top of the cupboard, the cutlery drawer and lined it, the cupboard under the kitchen sink with the cleaning products and the tea towels cupboard. We got rid of so many things that were not needed/expired or simply in bad condition so things look much better. We also cleaned 3 more ceiling panels in the kitchen too and are half way across.
    Purchases
I realised being new to the DVA gold card system that we could get a lot of the more expensive OTC items that DH needs on scripts and in conjunction used our 7% off face value racq egift card discount to save $31.17 on usual prices. This revelation will save so much money from our medical budget.
We put in an online order for groceries with WW and bought some staples we needed a lot of items on half price sales and I used our 4% off face value racq egift card, a $10 off rewards dollars to save $43.68 on usual prices.
In Coles we also bought a lot of half price sale and other sale items on deodorants and some staples to save another $66.90 on usual prices.
As we had used a few jerry cans of fuel we waited for the low prices in the pricing cycle and used our 4% off face value racq e-gift card and a WW grocery voucher to save $9.13 on usual prices which reduced the fuel cost for E10 down from $1.809 to $1.696.

Hoping everyone has had a productive week :).

    1. Hello Lorana, with the gold DVA card you're also covered for private hospital care, and once you reach 35 prescriptions their free for the rest of the year. The DVA helped my grandparents so much before they passed. Shower chairs, orthopaedic shoes, toilet aides. Such wonderful people ! Sonia in NSW

    2. Hi Sonia and thank you for that and we had been accessing treatments. private hospital care and some aids and normal scripts for DH but wasn't aware of the other things we were entitled to.

I am so glad your grandparents were able to get the things they needed to make their lives easier and yes we are assessing the pbs free medications too after we get to the limit each year which is hugely helpful when you are getting so many scripts.

      Have a great week.

      Lorna.

    3. Dear Lorna, Thank you so much! I am so glad for you about the medical savings. Thank you to Sonia for sharing her tips also.
You have been attacking the house as I have. I keep going. Some is challenging. Some feels good to bring new uses and new order to things and beautiful them too. Im not sure it will ever end as I keep finding more to do!
Good job on the deals and also filling the jerry cans. I noticed in town this week fuel prices were down a bit too. Time to fill up. I hope your week has gone well. We got some rain today which is so helpful! With love Annabel.x

  35. "How did you build up your home, pantry or garden this week? "

I changed the way I plan my grocery budget and menu. I started a new notebook and wrote down different categories.

#1 A list of the food items I bought this week. And the overall price.
#2 A list of the 'short fuse' items in the fridge.
#3 A list of meals that I could make from #1 and #2.
#4 A list of food wasted this week.

All week long, I'd mark up these lists.

For example, when I used the cucumber I bought, I'd put a check mark beside it.
When I threw out some moldy blueberries, I marked the 'food waste' list. When I made a meal, I'd mark up list #3.

Using these lists, especially #2, helped me see what I need to use up.

And I can try even harder to reduce the 'food waste' list.

    1. Well done! I really have to review everything every few days and use things up. Food is too expensive to waste although in the worst case scenario the chickens are happy if there is some! I found if I write on things with a marker pen ie jars of relish etc I am more likely to use them up otherwise I will wonder "how long has this been open?" and feel suspicious maybe its been too long! So that change helped me. Thank you for sharing your list! With love Annabel.xxx

  36. Congratulations on the birth of Lily! She looks so sweet. I believe you in the way things worked out with her name. The nursery items are lovely. I am so happy for you all.
I have seen parts of the movie, very inspiring. It is good you got to spend time with your friend
    and someone who understands.
The jug was so pretty, and the apples look so good. I admire your sewing! So good of your Mum to help with the food as well. I am glad things around the farm are set up and ready should the need arise. Annabelle we continue to pray for you. Ann Austin

  37. Dear Annabel, congratulations on the safe arrival of baby Lili! She is a beauty and will always be surrounded by love. The nursery is simply beautiful and I love her embroidered blanket. When I was reading your post, I could imagine you and your Mother going through the house making it ready with so much love for your daughter. I remembered the Shaker axiom: Hands to work and hearts to God; which I think sums you all up perfectly. With much love to you all, Jennie🖤🖤

  38. Terri from Blue House Journal here. I start out that way because if I do not I shall send off my comment with no name! Google is still being a bit of a pain with the sign ins. Some work some don't.
Anyway, I am so happy for your little Lily. I love that Chloe's dream was very similar to your vision. The nursery is such a lovely sweet sentimental place. I would love sitting there rocking a baby.
I have been examining my routines, my reasonings for purchases, my finances and so much more. I am also sorting out my house and tidying and re-organizing. I feel all of this is very important and very necessary just now and I want to pay attention and DO what I'm being urged to do. Like your house on the hill, it's all going to sort out when it's meant to sort but, in the meantime, you do what you're sensing is the NEXT thing. That's what I'm doing here. The NEXT thing that I'm being impressed to attend to.
Prayers continue here for you and your family. Hugs and Love. Terri

    1. Dear Terri,
I am hearing you on being urged to do things and sensing their importance. I started to feel the urging ... 2017 or so. It has only every increased. In 2020 I wondered if this is "it" that I had been urged to prepare for but no I felt it more and more since. We would not be the only ones. Anyone with eyes to see and ears to hear must have this. urging.
Thank you so much re Lily and the nursery! With love Annabel.xxx

  44. My congratulations to Chloe and Luke and Nana Annabel on the safe arrival of the very gorgeous Lily May. Thankyou for sharing the nursery photos - so so lovely. I am late to comment as I gained a new sister in law on Saturday when she married my husband's brother. Despite the 40 degree heat it was a joy filled day. We had family come all the way from New Zealand and today I am happily exhausted from hosting a lunch with them all at our house. You truly are inspirational and walk your talk Annabel. I am going to look up the movie/book. Much love to you, Clare

  46. Beautiful nursery and baby items ! Congratulations on your new baby grand daughter Lily !! What a blessing !! I truely can see future business opportunities and good money in making such items for new mums !! Just a gorgeous nursery even I feel at peace !! Annabel I know it's far from your mind, but I need advice in prepping as a single lady, and how to prepare for things such as weather events ? I'm so glad I listened to my mum, to keep long life milk, and bread in the freezer ! Several days ago I went to the Coles near where I live (and that's inner Sydney ) and they had their second power outage in two weeks due.to.extreme heat. So, I was covered! Please tell me Annabel what I should have as a emergency stash, and what I should have to survive if I needed to. I can't afford a generator. Love Sonia, Sydney Australia
