Feather your Nest Friday, 22nd March, 2024.

Well, it has been such a big week.  Thank you for all the beautiful comments on my basics post.  I decided that I cannot reply individually while I do try to on Friday posts.  But I am very blessed by prayers and so many of you.   I have many things to tell you, so here goes...

I have been working through apples.   This week I made puree which I froze and stacked for when Lily is ready for them.

I had some too, it is really nice with yoghurt.   Also I made a big tray of pork chops and apples...

I served them with carrots and broccolini and it was really good.

I made scones for Mum.

In the thrift store I found this beautiful jug (quite large) and several gingham cottons.

There is more of a routine happening and this includes two days a week I have farm help.  I provide morning tea and lunches.   Those days are go go go but now I can see we are getting somewhere.   At first I just felt like I was in a black hole.   Then I felt overwhelmed with my own work and things I can't do.  Like I have no idea how to fix a trough or a water pipe or use the tractor!   Now I have help and also now I have (as of today) an automatic lawn irrigation system.   The lawn is a big area.  It is so big because it is a major buffer around the house against fires.  It looks lovely but it has this purpose.   Andy managed it with the ride on lawn mower and watering it in sections with huge sprinklers.  The last thing he did that day was turn the sprinklers on for the girls.

Reading my Bible this week I came across verses that speak of death as being asleep in Jesus.  I realised that when the girls came running in to tell me Andy was "asleep near the mower." ..  this was not just a fluke.  By God's grace I had a warning, a moment to prepare and the message in real words... he is sleeping.   I think that is incredible.  I am slow to catch on but I just "got it."

I have also been thinking on easier/more efficient ways to do things.  As I am writing the sprinklers came on,  all by themselves!  Each time I find an easier way I write it down.

In town a lady said to me she was very sorry I had lost my husband.  It was a case of she knew me but I didn't know her.   She had also had lost her husband three years ago.   We had a really beautiful talk. She was so kind.   Her husband had died by suicide.   All the way home I thought of the implications of this,  how that would be and I felt grateful for how Andy had died and the time leading up to it.

Thursday I headed off on a mission to pick up seven hens.  Conventional ways of buying more chickens aren't working so I advertised and found six grey and black hens.  It was a beautiful Autumn day.. a lovely drive and I found a farm with so many gorgeous hens and chicks.  The lady gave me a tour and it was a lot of fun.   So during the conversation with her I learned she had become a widow at nineteen years old.
All the way home (with the chickens in the car chatting away) I thought I am so grateful that did not happen to us!  Seriously, we just never know what someone is going through.

Andy liked it when I talked about him on the blog.  He loved it!  Usually it was something he had made, built, fixed...    now it is something else even better.  Now he is giving homework.    I have spoken about the book I bought after meeting with my friend,  the movie I watched and the painting the young girl did.  All of this were very good for me.  I have been having prayer times and bible reading.   Then when I finished the book I was looking for new material.
Andy had watched The Chosen series three times.  He was usually watching it on his iPad in the evening before sleep.  I have heard good and not so good things about it.  He only seemed to benefit and was in his Bible 10x more... which is a good sign about it I think.   I decided to catch up with him and began to watch.   The first episode I didn't really know if I would like it.  I decided to hang in there and watch one more.  By the end of the second episode I was completely hooked.   In the last week between all of the above the spring is back in my step.  I can't even explain it fully.
Each season of The Chosen explains it is based on the life of Jesus,  they have had to add personally and embroider it to bring it to be a movie.  They say to read your Bible.    This is what I have done.  I am only in season two.  It needs to be watched in exactly the right order...  it is completely free to view.   So taking into account I am in season two...  I am loving it and I am thinking about Jesus basically ALL DAY long and if I wake in the night.   If you need encouragement,  if you want the scriptures brought to life for you and if you think that will help you read your Bible more you might enjoy this.

I made a large pin up board of Andy and Andy and me in happy times.  I only finished it last weekend.   It has had a great effect on me.   Every time I walk past it I feel happy.  As I pass it probably 20 times a day that is pretty good.  Seeing him fit, healthy and so happy, as he is in heaven.   Good times.  This is very uplifting.

This has me thinking.  I am prompted by reminders.  If I have may Bible on my bed side table and where I sit at my computer it is right next to me and I open it.  My Grandparents had a beautiful Christian image on the wall in the bedroom that was "mine" at their house.  I loved that image.   In bed it was straight in front of me, over the doorway.  It included a short prayer.  I always read the prayer over and over and it reminded me of Gods love.

Later someone told me that the way they reminded themselves to pray throughout the day was to light a candle. As she went about her work she would pass the candle over and over and it would remind her to get her thoughts back to praying.   This also worked for me.  My mind just wanders off in all kinds of directions, we have many interruptions ...  but a reminder works for me.    So like with Andy's photos where I can see them any times a day  I realise I could benefit a lot from visual reminders of God and to be praying.   Andy had a prayer card and a small cross on the front of his phone cover.   Every time he took his phone out of his pocket or sat it down he saw that cross.  He died with this cross in his pocket.   There is something to this, visual reminders.   I am going to keep rearranging and reorganising the house and also the car to have visual reminders to keep me on track.

I continued to write down a gratitude list every evening.   This evening I haven't done this yet although some of the photos will represent these things.

I also continued the hot meal run.   Tonight was sausages, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes and peas.
Now I am changing over to meals that are ready to put in the oven.  So the hot meal run ends, except maybe in emergencies!

Now take a look at this little face...

Miss Lily looks like she can't wait to get going!  Pretty good for the ripe old age of two weeks.  😊

I sewed Lily some very soft flannelette burp cloths.

Hopefully some more chickens are coming and Chloe ordered some as well.

My efforts to include Fr. Goring's micro changes are going well.  Two are... to always have a drink with me in the car and always keep a spare bottle of water on my bed side table. I ALWAYS run out of water in the night and always cannot be bothered to get up and get more.  It would seem simple just to keep an extra bottle next to me,  now this small thing has worked.  I will add another micro change next week.

My eyes are closing so I must stop talking.   I hope it was a good week for you also.  How did you build up your home, pantry or garden?  xxx

  1. Oh that sweet Lilly is just like a little doll. What a blessing! One of my husband's old friends sent a text a few weeks ago telling him to watch 'The Chosen'. We had tried once and didn't finish the first episode so thank you for your review. We will give it another try. Have a good weekend! Much love and prayers continue to come your way.

It’s wonderful you have help. I’m a widow of almost 18 months. I have had a terrible time finding someone to help out when something needs repair. My son is disabled so he can’t help very much. Luckily I don’t have a big yard and my home is small. I’m learning to do small things thanks to YouTube.
My hubby was a great Bible reader. He read it for hours and asked a lot of questions to our Pastor. I have a lot of comfort knowing he is resting with our Lord.
I just finish a very large quilt top. Today I am going to do some baking.. I’ve been invited to nephew’s open house soon and he wanted me to bring cookies. Love cooking and baking so guess I’ll put some extra in the freezer. If I don’t put them in the freezer the 30 lbs. I lost this past year will be back quickly. lol.
Love your post Annabel. I look forward to reading it and all the bluebirds posts. It really makes my day. Blessings.

    1. Dear Phyllis, Thank you so much! 18 months is not very long.. I am glad you have the comfort of knowing your husband is with God. The church or in your area should have someone who can do small jobs for you... maybe in return for some baking! That would be a win win! Thank you for your encouragement, with love Annabel.xxx

  4. Dear Annabel,

Lily and the boys are absolutely gorgeous!!! A wonderful little smile on a little angel with personality! She would be so loved and spoilt by her big brothers, life will be so great for her! Congratulations for all your beautiful grandchildren.

As always, a full and good week in your part of the world. I like very much the large pin up board of Andy, what a good idea to see him so happy. God is good! I am glad He is there with you all the time.

Life goes on as usual in my part of the world. Taking care of us, the animals and the garden, continue cleaning the big orchard, we are preparing for the season so I took inventory of what seeds we have and still bought some everytime I saw them on the stores - vegetables, herbs and of course flowers. I did choose herbs and flowers that I could feed my chickens with, like nasturtium and calendula for example. Eggs are in full production and I did some swaps with them - for my son*s T-shirt, kitchen scraps for the chicks or a big size fabric for a king size bed coverlet., etc.

Last year was not a good year in my garden.
I fought with pests/slugs for the entire season. I planted, they ate it, and as I don*t use any chemicals only organic traps like beer or handpicking what went well were my containers and somewhat raised garden, it was easier to watch them. But this year, I’m ready for a fresh start. Never giving up is another positive way to look at life, stick with it even when things get tricky, and you will be a better person from each experience - I am determined to have patience and perseverance.

I did mend a big coverlet and that was big work, changed entirely one face and hand quilted some as it was too thick for the sewing machine. I am proud I did not think for a minute to buy a new one - it was perfect just needed some work. I also finished a blitz comision - two knitted pink vests in 6 days for an anniversary party. It kept me up some nights until wee hours but I did it without missing any hours from the work.

Life is hard but it is very beautiful - Remember the movie La Vita E Bella? Europe is witnessing bad and strange things, and is hearing bad and crazy talks. Keep praying, keep preparing, keep loving and being kind. That is the best!

Sending lots of love from far away, Laura_s_world from Romania

    1. Dear Laura, You did so well to get two vests made so quickly! The eggs are so good! The reading you did with them is fantastic! To make the coverlet and do the quilting is a big job! Well done on that. I do much better with pots and raised beds for the same reason. If I have lettuce in the ground there is no hope. Up off the ground it is fine. A line of saw dust is something slugs and snails do not like. I dont think they like ash either and both of these are save and natural. But I think off the ground is best.
Also I am seeing strange things. The eclipse for 8 April in USA I have been reading and looking at a long list of very strange but true things about that. Like it is made up but it isn't! I have heard Romania mentioned lately and a lot about France sending troops into Ukraine... which to me could mean NATO is now looking more directly involved and the possible implications of this. Yet our news stations say not a word. It is indeed all strange.
I think that your idea to grow things for the chickens is great. The whole subject of alternative/supplementary foods for chickens is a good one. Feed can be expensive. We can get that down low when we use everything around us that we can. If people at work take lunch... could you take a container... like a little bucket. Put a picture of a chicken on it and Lauras Chickens... maybe people would put their scraps in to it and you come home with all kinds of chicken treats. Thinking outside the box. I am trying to build my flock back up so I am thinking these thoughts! With much love Annabel.xxx

  7. What sweet grand babies, I love the picture of all three of them. Reminds me of my grands. You accomplished so much. It’s such a blessing you have some wonderful help on the farm. We live on a farm & my husband travels with his work so I have to do all I can & it can definitely be overwhelming. He does what he can when he is home, but I try to take as much load off him as possible. I am thankful also you are spending more time in God’s Word & on spiritual things. It will only bless you even more. I wish this world would turn to God & realize what true blessings we can have through Jesus. However, we know that God’s goodness will prevail in the end, even though there is so much bad in the world. Your space, farm, family, garden & friends are some of the goodness and we appreciate that you share that with us. I look forward to each post & all the beautiful, creative things you have done each week. …..Vicky in Ky.

    1. Dear Vicky,
Farm work is never ending! However I would never leave the farm. Animals need daily care and so does the garden and there are always storms to clean up from or fences to repair and on and on! You are doing a good job to do so much! Yes we know how it turns out in the end. Sometimes it takes extreme times for people to see, to turn to God. It helps me to think of the scripture that a lie has a short life and the truth lives on forever. And as you point to we have to think on the good things. Thank you so much, Love Annabel.xxx

  8. Thank you for your post dear Annabel Smith. I follow the way you try to find your way into your new life. I know how hard it is. But I have serious concens about the chosen.

I made some researches about the chosen. I am sure you can find a lot of informations in english.

This video shows what the regisseur Dallas Jenkins sais about it:

    https://odysee.com/@Kris:ce/StellungnahmeChosen:4

    start at minute 12 th

„We are doing 56 episodes of this show. And most oft the content of this show is not
directly from Scripture. I know that sounds horrible, but it’s true.
If you watched episode 1 of season 1, almost none of that is from scripture; episode 2 of
season 2, none of it is from scripture; episode 3 – none of it from scripture; episode 4 – most
    of it not from scripture.

Jenkins has also said that 95% of the content (Chosen series) is NOT biblical. So they are inventions of the director. 95%!

Jesus said, ‘Watch out that no-one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, “I am the Messiah,” and will deceive many…… and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. At that time if anyone says to you, “Look, here is the Messiah!” or, “There he is!” do not believe it.
For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. See, I have told you in advance. So if anyone tells you, “There he is, out in the desert,” do not go out; or, “Here he is, in the inner rooms,” do not believe it.

If there are only 5 % biblical content, how can this movie bring people to the biblical Jesus? it is a satanic lie and adulteration. the satan has always mixed lies and truth to deceive people.

The actor Jonathan Roumie who plays Jesus is practizing occultism.

    The bible sais:

Don’t put a spell on anyone. Don’t get messages from those who have died. Don’t talk to the spirits of the dead. Don’t get advice from the dead. 5. Mose, 18,11

    1. Dear Heike, Thank you for your comment when you do normally not comment. I am only now just started on season three. So far it has helped me to imagine how it would have been to be there when Jesus was, with him. It has brought to life many of the stories I have read and re read. It has me reading my Bible more and praying more just as it did with Andy and our friend Andrew. I would be shocked if anyone got confused and didnt know it was a movie and decided to follow the actors or not realise it is an attempt to bring the events to life to show people in the 2000s ... Certainly no one is getting advice from the dead or any such thing. There is no prophet... it is a movie with actors.. Today I woke up having heard the Our Father taught in the movie in such a way I will never miss another day of saying it. This is good fruit.
Evil violent immoral movies are made everyday and no one complains. A series made to turn people to God and the Bibles people complain. Go figure.
My day is today to rest and recover it has been a pretty big week. Have a lovely weekend! xxx

    2. Thank you for your reply dear Annabel. Yes, you are right, I usually dont comment. I wished I would do. I would tell you how amazed I am about everything you are doing, how much I learn from you, what an encouragement you are and lately how I feel with you. But through my sickness I have to be carefull with my energy. Also pain hinders me often to find a good writing position. Not mentioned my keyboard which has its own life lately, LOL. I don't know how to fix it. it takes me forever to write a few sensefull sentences and correct the mistakes. This way many things remain unsaid. But I hope that through some chats we had on fb you know how much I apprechiate you and what you are doing.

With reference to "the chosen" I have a differnt opinion than you. I started to watch it, but I did not like it. Then I started to make some researches because it is such a hype. About a few informations I was really shocked. I tried to watch it a few times since (the last time was the day of your post) but I cannot. I don't like that the movie makers say they want to show the autentic Jesus and then there are so much stories based on their own phantasie. This is confusing and not honest. Therefore I felt urged to comment despite of my low energy.

Looking forward to your next posts, dear Annabel. Blessings xxx Heike

  9. What a lovely idea to have the photos of Andy displayed where you can see him so happy. I’m so pleased for you to have more chickens! It sounds like having the work days on the farm will be such a help. I’m sure the workers will be happy to be there with you providing morning tea and lunch!

This week was quite a busy one for us and I was really happy to be able to make the call to drop a few things that were planned. Sometimes I think it’s important to know that even things we enjoy can become stressful when we have too much on our plates. So I’ll be looking at this each week as I plan, identifying what we can get rid of that week if we’re too tired, too rushed etc.

I got lots of baking done this week which felt good. I’ve realised that I find it very relaxing. Obviously it serves a purpose to feed us but the process has benefits for me as well.

Today I plan to drop several boxes at the op shop and clean the areas where the stuff has been removed from. I love clear spaces!

I hope you have a lovely weekend, spending time with your beautiful grandchildren must be so joyful!

  16. Dear Annabel,
Your grandchildren are all so adorable, a beautiful family indeed ❤️

I have watched the Chosen series and I absolutely loved it. It made me want to pick up my bible and reference things, it was an encouragement. But some time after I watched it I heard somewhere that it wasn’t very accurate and it put me off a bit, but I couldn’t understand that because the stories portrayed in the series are in the bible (as far as I could tell) so I was totally confused. But do you know what I’ve decided…what does it matter if it’s not 100% accurate, if people watch it for entertainment and are moved just a little, if they become curious as a result and want to learn more, then to me it serves a valuable purpose. I could rewatch it again and I think I will.

I think it is fabulous. I am also going to re watch it. It made me grasp things I had not ie how hated tax collectors really were... how to follow Jesus they really had to drop everything and just go... so many things I now think on. Over Easter it would make perfect viewing. Have a beautiful Easter, with love Annabel.xxx

  17. Your post resonates so much with me Annabel. I'm glad you are giving yourself time to grieve but understanding also that you are still here and can tailor your life and future to suit you.
Following a serious health blip last year I am thinking through life and routines too and your post echoes some of my thoughts.
One particular area I need to streamline is food prep and cooking. It's important to me that I continue to cook from scratch healthy and tasty food on a budget but I have been exhausting myself. We were away on holiday last week and together with friends cooked most meals at the holiday cottage. My friend cooked a one tray in the oven meal which was so easy and delicious. She told me about a cookbook which is helping her plan and cook and by happy coincidence I found a copy of the exact same cookbook in a secondhand bookshop for a few pounds! One tray cooking is going to feature much more in our house and when I feel I've streamlined cooking I will move onto other areas of life. As you say we are free to make our own choices and there are habits even reaching back to my childhood which I can let go of. I have been my own worst enemy insisting things are done a certain way and I am determined to change some things and go easy on myself.
Power to your elbow Annabel and thank you so much for bringing us along with you.

  19. I love your memories of Andy..I recently reviewed The Chosen episodes 4-6. I loved it too. I first went to my Bible to check it all out. It was right there. Now, I too read more frequently from my Bible.
You are so smart to get help Annabelle. I think I can do everything but I know that I can't -Husband is the one who keeps this old house running. Of course. on the other hand, he thinks I do. I told him if I die first to get a maid.
Keep sharing about Andy...you have beautiful memories.

    1. Thanks so much Vickie! I found so many revelations and maybe I am slow but The Chosen made me understand more of how it might have been to be there... and this has affected me deeply, for the better.
You and your husband sound like a wonderful team! Have a very Happy Easter, with love Annabel.xxx

  21. Dear Annabel, I love how you are always thinking ahead! Baby Lily will enjoy her lovingly prepared apple purée and it is such a thoughtful gift for a busy mama. Those meals that you prepare and deliver are such an act of love. I am so glad that you are having some help on the farm, we can’t do everything on our own, it is too exhausting! Much love to you all. Jennie🖤🖤

  22. We began the Chosen series and I too, like another reader and yourself, found that the series while not accurate to the Bible (And what movie has ever been?!) did portray enough of actual things that we read about to give us the incentive to go back and watch and then read still more. It made me feel very thoughtful about everyday events and was a good thing.
I do have to question those who seem to think that it's wrong to watch something that is based however loosely on Christ. Considering the absolute stuff that smells horrid that is on tv/news daily WHY would we forgo something that had some intention of pointing us in the direction of Christ?! However, I confess I have a different viewpoint. I grew up in a very legalistic church that I dearly loved but was asked to exit because heaven help me my daughter wished to be baptized but not to belong to one church, only to Christ. And that was enough to have us excommunicated. Thankfully I saw that the most important thing was that my daughter had a desire to give her heart to Christ and we found a pastor more than happy to baptize her.
All that aside, I had a good frugal week. I made all our meals at home, using what we had on hand and using the oldest things first even though it meant changing up my menu. I used up leftovers, made breads, mended clothing, found items to use in my guest room makeover that were already on hand, tugged a tiny carrot frond left from mid-winter harvesting and discovered a good-sized handful of carrots to use in our meals. I went over my budget and realized that I had a built-in savings amount that I can use to help cover an area that had presented itself.
Now to steel myself to weed flower beds. All the rain we've had and the warmer days has meant that every one of them is exploding with weeds. I was shocked when I went outdoors this morning and discovered how many had sprung up. I need to get busy on them now and then re mulch my beds so they will remain weed free. 1. Dear Terri,
Thank you! I am still so affected by The Chosen today (Good Friday) all I can think is how horrific it was for Jesus and his Mother to watch and all who were there with him. It is beyond comprehension. To be made feel you are there, to mediate on this... Of all the vile things on TV or you tube or the internet that anyone would be against something that is bringing millions to God, depicting him as best as they can (and no, no actor can be as perfect as Jesus but they can do their best) and bring scripture and the life of Jesus to a billion people (that is their goal) I have no words. I will be re watching it and waiting for season 4.
You had a very productive week! Lovely on the carrots! I hope you conquered some weeding! Have a very Blessed Easter, with love Annabel xxx

  23. What Adorable and Precious photos of Lily with her brothers! They remind me of my daughter’s two little ones! They are three years apart, (almost 4 and 7 now!) and my grandson was fascinated with his little sister’s little fingers and toes! So Cute!!
So thankful you are getting help with the farm work! What a blessing!! And am happy to hear that you are being so blessed by The Chosen series and getting into your Bible more and praying! Reminds me of the verse in James 4:8, “ Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” As you draw nearer to Him, you will be blessed more and more! He’s a good, good Father!
    Hugs and Blessings,

    1. Dear Nana C, Thank you. As we are so close to Easter the Bible reading and The Chosen have made me feel like I can imagine being there. It has impacted me deeply. I know I cannot manage the farm on my own... and thankfully we already had a trusted friend helping sometimes. He was ready to help much more... I am very thankful about this. Have a very Blessed Easter, with love Annabel.xxx
