Feather your Nest Friday, 28th July, 2023.

I am so glad to sit down and look over my week.   We are almost at the end of July!  The month went so fast.  Actually the week went so fast!

I continued to work through produce I have.   A dozen lemons and a dozen eggs went into Lemon Butter.  I still have some lemons left but they look fresh enough to last a little longer.  The chickens still are laying, I collected seven most days.

Someone was asking for fertile chicken eggs and I put my hand up and said I have some and I am happy to do a trade for produce.  We will see what happens!

There were twelve apples to use up so I made Outback Tania's Apple slice.  It was just beautiful.  Each slice takes six apples... I made one of them gluten free.  Completely delicious as a slice/cake or as a warm desert with cream or ice cream.    I will see if Tania will post a link in the comments.

I had two cook ups. The first was a batch of Enchilada sauce.   One tray of Enchiladas went to Chloe for her family.

The second use it up baking was pumpkin soup and then a batch of pumpkin scones,  I really love these.

Using what we have to the absolute fullest... I can't even express how this week made me even more aware of how important this is.    We were just inundated with dire and extreme financial news.  Each day it was builders collapsing,  farmers protesting and fighting for their lives,  headlines like "Disastrous, Panic as repayments double," figures from the first quarter of the year showing electricity went up by 30% again and meant to repeat this ...   food prices through the roof and food is shrinking!   Normally I shop and pick out the produce carefully however this week I did an online order which Andy picked up.   First I went through the catalogue and then ordered absolute necessities and some specials.   Amongst those I ordered a twin pack of lettuce and a cucumber.  They were not cheap.  I think the cucumber was $2.50 and that is about as good as I could hope for lately.   When I unpacked them I was dumfounded.  Actually I was mortified.   All I could think is what if I had kids and these were meant to fill sandwiches for the week?  I just felt sad and worried for families. They were the tiniest lettuces and cucumber I have ever seen in my life.  It was like some kind of joke.   It just really, really hit me how this would be for a family.   I showed Andy and he said the same.  He had not ever seen lettuces so small!   Since the cucumber was 1/3 the minimum normal size... for it to equal "normal" it would have cost $7.50.   No one in their right mind would pay that.  But I just had!     Because of this I am further upping my refrigerator game.  Food is worth gold now.   I am going to do a post on making food last,  keeping a close eye on what needs to be used and preserving what you can't use right now.

Apart from food.... it made the news tonight that people are paying $40 a bottle of laundry liquid and $60 a box of dish washer tablets.   I saw that small spray bottles of concentrated surface spray (used for baked on messes, the top of the stove etc) was $11.50.   I decided to adapt and test Miracle Spray.   It worked!  It works a dream so much so that I made some up as gifts.

I was so happy with this and gave some to a friend who was also distressed over the price of cleaning products.   These actually produced a lot of joy, even from the perspective of "we can beat these prices" and we can help each other.

In the sewing room the last of the Kookaburra fabric was used and then some Banksia fabric was made into kitchen towels.

For a little while I have thought about all the velvet remnants I have and that I might attempt a simple soft toy... and if it worked I might make a goal to make one a week.  This was my first attempt.  He looks a little like he needs rehabilitation in a wildlife hospital.   I have another one cut out, a bit bigger this time as his arms were ridiculously hard to stuff.  We will see how it goes.  His name is Gumnut.

A couple more wash cloths were finished.

My third big cook up was a big pot of spaghetti sauce, a giant pasta bake and leftovers to freeze.   We had this for dinner tonight,  it will re appear Sunday night as well.    I still have two pumpkins and a bag of oranges.... I think tomorrow I will make slabs of orange cake and juice some.  You can bet I will be using everything single thing to the max!

I have felt very prompted to go through my cupboard and stock,  organise,  know what I have,  how much and where...   It is six years now since I began stocking up and working on our preparedness.   What a journey!   Last week I did some Spring Cleaning and this week I totally emptied out some cupboards, wiped them out and put it all back in categories  (with labels)  and counted each item.    I got our utility cupboard done,  our under the sink cupboards and under the bathroom sinks.   It was a giant mess doing it but now they all look so nice!  Now and then I just go open the doors to admire.  😊

Next week I am going to tackle the medical cupboard and the bathroom cupboard which is quite big and has all the toiletry type supplies.   Both of these will be huge jobs.   I know having the medical cupboard better organised is long over due.   To do it I measured it up and ordered shelves that will fit inside.   Now that I've decided what to do I can't wait to do it!

It is late and I have run out of energy so I will add 1/ Outback Tania's apple recipe,  2/ How I adapted the Miracle cleaner recipe to be a concentrated cleaner for baked on messes,  3/ where you can find the Koala pattern which is free,  4/ the Lemon Curd recipe if anyone wants it and 5/ a link to Vickys enchilada sauce recipe if anyone needs that.

How was your week?  How did you build up your home, pantry or garden?  We LOVE to hear! xxx

Miracle Cleaner.    For the concentrate I doubled the dish detergent and did not dilute this as you normally would.

Vickys Enchilada Sauce.   I do not use the stock... I use tinned or other tomatoes and a chicken stock cube.

Tania's slice:  6 Apples, peeled, cored and chopped.  2 Cups Self Raising flour,  1 cup of sugar, 2 eggs, 125 grams of butter....   mix wet ing then flour and apples all together.   Bake in a moderate oven for 1 hour.

Gumnut. This is posted on The Tuesday Afternoon Club and I will repost it so it is easy to find.  Hopefully next week I will have Gumnut 2.0 and will see if a bigger size makes him easier!

  1. I was just about to head off to bed and this popped up. What a busy week you had! I agree with you on food prices, and families struggling. It is heartbreaking that in Australia in 2023 we have families who have to choose between lights and heat and food or medicine. Knowing how to get your fresh food to last is vital, and knowing how to use it all and waste nothing is even more so. I love the Fresh and Crisp bags. They are inexpensive and keep food for weeks; I use them for cheese too. We've had just enough rain to not need to water the garden; it helps to keep the rain barrels full for spring and summer. I've been picking up fallen lemons, oranges and mandarins on my walk each day. So far we've eaten the oranges and mandarins and I made lemon butter and a couple of lemon meringue pies with the lemons (one happy husband that day!).

    1. Thank you so much! I have not tried these Fresh and Crisp bags, I will try them! Rain to keep the garden going is just perfect. I love you are finding fruit on your walk, that is very motivating to walk each day too! I also never imagined Aussies not being able to pay for electricity, medicine shortages... the prices... I NEVER imagined having to go through military checks to visit my daughter or her not being allowed to take her any back to the hospital for appointments... It is like a bad dream. But not to be beaten we can do so much and must!xxx

    1. Dear Melissa, Ok now I posted Tanias recipe above in the post. It is so easy and good! Great find on the blind and lovely that you are getting things looking so nice!
GOOD JOB on taking your lunch and coffee, a huge saving there and these kind of savings do really help you build your food storage especially when you see good deals! This gas issue... they want everyone on 100% electricity... yet we are short of electricity. What could go wrong? I am trying to tell everyone do not be reliant on electricity as 1/ The price!!! 2/It can fail, it can be turned off! We must keep back ups this is so dangerous. As they knock down power stations what do they think will happen? You are doing so well and what a good week! With love Annabel.xxx

  3. Good morning! This week I actually made a menu after taking inventory of the kitchen supplies. I have used up ingredients that I've had on hand, which felt really good. I love cooking one meal and then realizing I can make an entirely different meal out of what's left. I spent the entire day on Wednesday, organizing my pantry and rearranging some kitchen shelves. I love a good, clean, well organized kitchen! It makes cooking so much more inviting.

    1. Dear Debbie, I love the same! Friday night we had Spaghetti Bolognese and tonight the meat sauce is reappearing with corn chips and melted cheese. So I get the night off, everything is used up. And its different! Well done on all of your pantry and kitchen work. I agree it makes life easier and happier since we are in the kitchen so much! Have a great new week, Love Annabel.xxx

  4. I've not posted here in a long while but I read and reread your blog. My biggest win for the week was finding an almost new name brand leather safety harness for my husband at the thrift store. A new one sells for almost $900 but I got this for $20 we were shocked! I've been working my way through an abundance of tomatoes getting them stored for winter. I also have a variety of herbs drying. In the evenings I'm finishing up embroidery projects. I have a list of things to make for Christmas so I'm moving along with that each evening. We received notice that water rates are going up starting with the July bill due August 1. Also, electric will be going up 15 percent.
Everything looks lovely. Your baking and sewng is always beautiful.
I just keep Bluebirding each day.

Your evenings sound like mine except in my case its crochet... and I love that you are working on Christmas presents! This makes for very nice evenings too. More bills going up! It is continuous isn't it. As you say (which I like very much) we can keep bluebirding! Have a fantastic new week. With love Annabel.xxx

    1. "You will own nothing and be happy". It is globalism and the green agenda. The cost of powered, fertiliser etc means the end of a lot of agriculture. The UN and WEF want us to eat bugs. Literally. Basically it is due to evil. They also wish to reduce population. Harris made a speech last week and said it out loud but "projections" are for a 90% decrease in population. We are actually the cabin they want to reduce. If this sounds outlandish do a little research and you will find it is true. As bad as that sounds I do not believe they will success they underestimate us.

I am a bluebird in the US. I am so sorry about the stress of these high prices. God is using your blog to help people and prepare them for more severe hardships ahead.

I was going to suggest that you zest your oranges and lemons, then dry the zest to use in teas. Orange or lemon tea makes a beautiful gift.

  8. Thank you so much for keeping us up to date. I read the highlights to my husband as we continue to put away as much as possibile, despite little sense of urgency here. Our one grandson is finished tree planting in Northern BC, Canada, he lost some days of work due to smoke from the wild fires. Another grandson is leaving for Australia in September for work. He is working his way around the world. Would you consider using sprouts instead of cucumber and lettuce in sandwiches. I appreciate all I have learned here, praying for you always

    1. Dear Brenda, I hope your Grandson has a wonderful time here in Australia! Sprouts are a good idea for fresh greens. We have four weeks of winter left so I can get some seedlings going in the green house and once it is Spring I can keep us in both lettuces and cucumbers pretty well. I am so glad you are working on your pantry too. Thank you for your kind words! With love Annabel.xxx

  9. I love Gumnut!! What a great idea, he must be so soft. The cook ups sound fantastic, and the lemon butter always looks beautiful. Great job on the organising and wiping shelves. I love having extra food on hand but I need it to be organised or it overwhelms me.

This week I made the call to turn one of our fridge/freezers off. Our power bill was huge despite us making a big effort to keep it down. It’s getting harder to keep two fridge/freezes full because of the cost of food so I’ve turned one off, organised the other one really well and hopefully it will help. It might mean I have to make an extra trip to the shops for fruit but that’s easy for me to do.

My neighbour helped me plant some things she had pulled from her garden on a bank at the back of our property. She said they will be good ground cover that will help prevent weeds. And also that I couldn’t kill them if I tried lol.

That will be a great post on using everything up Annabel, food waste drives me nuts! And it doesn’t have to mean spending lots of time looking for recipes, it can mean recipes we already have that extras can be chucked into! I’ll look forward to that post.

    Have a great weekend!

Gumnut no 2 is complete... I have made improvements and no 3 is being cut out today, provided I get my clean day done! Have a good week Jen, with love Annabel.xxx

  10. Annabel, I cannot get over the prices you quoted on cleaners and such! I have found the same price increases and reduced contents to be here in the US. I feel for families these days. I always buy a little extra when I find a good deal in order to donate to those in need. I also network with my daughter and daughter in law when there is a good sale on something at the grocery store. That way they can stock their pantries as well. I feathered my nest this past week by canning peaches I bought from a farm stand. I also canned green beans from my garden. I got 9 pints of peaches and 9 pints of beans. Every other day I have enough beans to can about 9 pints. My garden is small and when I think of how much I get from it I am amazed. Due to the weather this season things are coming along slowly but this gives me a chance to breathe between canning sessions. I made sourdough biscuits from extra starter. I put the biscuits in the freezer. I also made and froze a peach pie to enjoy in the cold, mountain winter in a few months. You have inspired me to go through and inventory my cupboards around the house. Thank you for your encouragement and inspiration. I look forward to your posts every week.

    1. Dear Marley, You achieved a lot for the week! I think it is wonderful how much we can grow even in a small garden. Your beans are producing very well! The peaches from the farm stand sound beautiful! Biscuits in the freezer ready to go are very handy. As you say a peach pie in winter will be gorgeous!
Our family help each other too with deals and finds. I know what they use, what items Mum buys and I grab those if I see them on a big special. This is the way to get ahead. It is in our news that due to the cost of living crisis charities are being asked to help more than ever before but donations to them are down so there is a crisis. You had a very productive and good week! With love Annabel.xxx

  11. I am always inspired by your week Annabel, but it’s no wonder you get exhausted!

I am so happy that you are going to do a post including all the recipes. That would be so helpful. I look forward to it.

I had such a busy week last week preserving food and getting the garden ready for spring that I neglected my housework a bit! I just couldn’t squeeze it all in! I will have to strike a bit more of a balance this week, but there is so much to do most days and so little time!

I have heard whispers in the news about all the things you mentioned but I am one of those who has somewhat buried my head in the sand. I am still preparing but the stress it brings me to be watching the news constantly is not worth it to me, so I keep a little ear to the ground from time to time enough to know to keep going and that is all I need. Then I watched an episode of Patera called People Are Checking Out, and I thought yes..that’s me…I’m one of those people! Well I guess sometimes you just have to strike a balance.

Anyway I think I ended up rambling a bit there, but I will still hit publish ha ha. Have a wonderful, productive week everyone.

    1. Dear Cheryl, The links and recipe are up now at the end of the post. Thank you so much! I do not watch a lot of news since half of it is lies and advertising. If you watch Patera she will keep you basically informed albeit by codes because otherwise she will get cancelled! With the garden and preserving you are already doing what she would suggest! Just keep going! I did see the people are checking out one. Around us it is striking. There are people that are preparing and informed and there are others who are thinking on their tv shows and have no idea. They truly do not live in reality they checked out! I feel that I am responsible for my family as in daughters and grandchildren. When I was young with kids I was busy trying my best but I had no idea of world events. My parents no doubt watched over us and we had good, safe and glorious years here in Australia. But now I am the one aware and I have one daughter somewhat aware of the crisis we are in and those on the horizon and another with not much idea. It is my responsibility to prepare for them all. I just cant afford to check out. Their lives might depend on me being ahead. Even with the drug shortages... a life can be lost due to those alone. So I guess most of my days are happy farm living and working and I check in with my trusted sources for a while each day to get the overall picture and take note of things that are looming. Currently one is rice. Well I have a few years in rice for us all so that is taken care of. We all need to increase our security as things go downhill crime will increase and already has... and I am pointing that out because again this is dangerous. Thats my job. I understand how you feel so assess who looks to you for wisdom and help and go from there.
I am also getting ready for Spring as we can feel it in the air and blossoms are out everywhere! You did a lot and had a very productive week! With much love Annabel.xxx

  12. Annabel another fantastic post thank you. The news is certainly grim at present. I am making my own washing powder now as the price to wash clothes is becoming ridiculous! But also the fear the ingredients in our commercial products are so very bad for our bodies. The recipe (mix) I am using is equal parts borax, washing soda and kosher salt.

  14. Its getting serious in so many ways. I am feathering our nest this week by dehydrating vegetables. I crinkle cut 4 pounds of carrots, also dried sweet potatoes, yellow and green zucchini, and green onions that will be ground into onion powder. I am also drying cooking herbs and mullein for respiratory tea this winter.

I continue to gather handfuls of raspberries every couple of days and freeze them until there is enough to make jam.

I am using egg shells, banana peels, coffee grounds, and everything else i can to make more compost to improve the soil.

I am going to have to go through all my seeds again and weed out those that didn't do well this summer or that weren't disease resistant. Times are getting too hard to be counting on questionable seeds.

I am also intentionally trying to give away items we are not using. Its nice to help others and declutter.

And most importantly, keeping my mind focused on our Lord who will never leave us or forsake us and who will always make a way for every true need to be met.

Blessings to you bluebirds wherever you live.

I am trying to listen to God... on what to do next, what needs attending to, what to stock as He has guided me in preparedness for six years or more now and this last couple of weeks I just feel strongly to organise, take inventory etc and this has created a lot of space too. Im really supervised actually how much space I have! Thank you for your list of things you put to good use too! With love Annabel.xxx

  15. Dear Annabel, such an industrious week you had. I love Gumnut he is very sweet. I have a radar for koalas at the moment because my new nephew's room has sweet grey and white wallpaper with gumtrees and koalas on it. I just bought him a koala hooded towel for Christmas. I too have felt a need to sort back through everything. I am trying to declutter a little too as our house will have to be re-stumped at some stage so that means moving everything, also my daughter is growing up and passed some childhood stages which means some things can head out the door. I find it a hard balance as to what to hold onto 'just in case' and well, hoarding really. This week I managed stationary and part of the kitchen. Can anyone tell me how THREE potato mashers got into my utensil draw. Surely someone planted it - I cannot have done that.:) Love Clare

I need to sort cards into Birthday and other categories as they are all mixed up and hard to find what I need! I made progress this week and next week I have big plans for two more areas... medical and bathroom.. I will get in a big mess doing those!

  16. Your lemon butter looks beautiful! I love your big cook ups and that you share with family. Those prices are just crazy. I don't know how some people are managing. You have been a shining light on the subject of preparedness and building up our homes. I know many of us are ahead because of you.
This week I had a friend come over for a visit. It had been her birthday, so she brought half of her cake over for the boys to enjoy, which they did for several days! She also gave us eggs, as our chickens aren't laying due to our extreme heat. I made her a set of cards as a gift.
In the garden, I got my compost pile cleaned up, as the weeds had taken over. I've been trying to be more diligent about saving kitchen scraps for the compost, chickens, and dogs. I gathered the heads from my spent sunflowers and harvested the seeds for planting.
We went through Colton's clothes to cull the ones that no longer fit. I am keeping a few for sewing material.
I saved $15.98 on groceries. It is not nearly as much as what I used to save, but I will take what I can get. I'm also going to be doing a grocery savings series, so I'm looking forward to reading yours.
I have been getting caught up on my laundry and ironing this week since getting my washer and dryer hooked back up. I have been trying to hang more on the clothesline so I can save wherever possible. With things the way they are, it takes every bit of effort. But I love my family, and I love my home, so doing all of these things is a real pleasure and makes me happy.
I hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

    1. My husband got the planters put together. These stand about three feet high and have a 12inch depth for planting in. Now I am lobbying for raised bed planters to go around the outside edge of the patio as a border and additional planting space. This sounds silly...We have nine acres more of less but I do not have the equipment nor the physical strength to put an inground garden in...So I am doing pots and things that I can manage on my own for the most part. That said, I've harvested perhaps 10 tomatoes and that's all...But I have more coming on. Nothing has done really well. Never mind. I will learn in time and things will improve. I've already grown 10xs more tomatoes than at any point in the past!

On the rest of the front, I am loving having a local grocery once more especially as the owner believes in putting markdowns out where people might snatch them up. I am always perusing the clearance produce, meat and the carts with the non-perishables in them.

I continue to try to waste nothing here at home, as far as foods go. My son has also generously been giving us lunch bags from the school system for many weeks this summer. That will end after this next week but that is fine. Its been a most welcome addition and most of the things were good, some were edible (I'm just saying about taste not about quality, nothing has been spoiled) and we will have perhaps an extra month's worth of food when this ends. That is something!

Our electric costs haven't increased overly much to date. Insurances have risen and I'm wondering what our house insurance shall look like when it comes due this year. Gas is not at it's highest point nor the lowest. The cost of most meat is dear. I found two roasts marked down at the local store for $4/pound and I sort of smirked as i picked them up because right now that is a great price for Chuck, but a couple of years ago this would have been TOP price not a marked down price! I've noted that produce overall is high this year which puzzles me as we live just above the beginning of a major agricultural area where such things are grown and haven't had inclement weather to prevent good harvests, but double price for squash/zucchini/cucumbers/tomatoes this year and those really were cheap in the past in season.
I too prefer to keep my head down and just walk in my own path and do what I feel led to do but now and then I have to lift my eyes up to see where we are. I heard the Harris speech mentioned and yes she really did say 'decrease the population'. One has to wonder if some of the controversial things being encouraged aren't step one in that process...
I've heard too of the bans on many things like gas and charcoal and wood for fuel. Yet we're told that we haven't the electric grid to support a fully electric world and nuclear and coal powered plants for electric feed are being knocked out. One wonders if there are perhaps SEEDS that one might plant for electric production the way everyone is acting. Also noted is all the controversy over killing off cattle and relying on plant and bug based proteins...
It is indeed a very strange world in which we live these days.

    2. Dear Kelsey, I will be reading your series! I hope the temperature has gone down. Chickens just hate it but it is hard on everyone and everything!
Your visit with your friend sounded lovely. I can imagine some of Coltons clothes would make good fabric for the boys... I have seen both denim and flannel quilts which I think are just lovely for boys! The hot weather is great for washing the quilts and blankets... that may be the only good thing about hot windy days! With much love Annabel.xxx

    3. Dear Terri, I heard the Harris speech too. Yes indeed they mean to decrease the population. Getting everyone dependent entirely on electricity which can be switched off. They already can control the temperature of your house. It is the same here. People now are choosing to keep warm or cool or food or medical... cant do all of them. The UN openly discuss the population reduction and Bill Goes said out loud how vaccines can be used to reduce the population. We however do not have to go along with their plans!
Fantastic about your planters!! Also the local grocery store sounds very nice! You have really increased what you grow and been very successful... now these planters are going to be wonderful! With love Annabel.xxx

  17. Dear Annabel and Bluebirds,
Thank you for sharing and for living out your beliefs!
I bottled up a bunch of homemade vinegars. 3 home haircuts helped with expenses. All home-cooked meals. Hanging laundry on the clothesline always lowers the electric bill. Plus my daughter works for a local farmer and brings home cantaloupe (2nds) for free! My husband was able to bring home free lettuce and fresh spinach from a local thrift store. This plus harvesting out of own small garden has been huge!
    Praying for you all,
    Leslie (Ohio, U.S.)

  18. Dear Annabel,

Firstly, Gumnut is so cute! And he would be so snuggly in the velvet!

It has been a crazy week, here. We had a crazy tropical system move in that wasn't really forecasted, which consisted of about 12 hours of constant thunder and lightning and torrential rain. We had all kinds of flash floods, washing out roads, bridges, flooding houses, roads, stores, etc., and taking the lives of some on their way to safety, as their vehicles were swept off the road. The roads all around us are in a horrible mess, and will take quite some time to repair...lots are closed and will likely be that way for a while. We were so lucky with our family...the kids got home from work, driving in heavy rain, but before it got to its worst, and before the roads they usually take were under water! They were stressed when they got home, but safe, and we literally had no idea that the water was so bad until we woke up the next day...the thunder and lightning kept on all night, but you couldn't really hear the rain coming down. Our little community got lots of rain, but probably only as much as we get in a hurricane or storm...but the neighboring communities around us bore the brunt of the water. Even now we're all just finding out just how bad it was that night. Anyway, this just tops up the wettest garden season we've had--nothing is growing (that could get planted...most isn't planted because it's been too wet to plant) due to the rains/wet ground and the heat and humidity. Ugh. All of us who usually garden are going to be in the grocery stores looking for food we normally grow, and the farmers are having a bad year, too. And the prices just keep going up in the stores. Our gas is more than 40 cents a litre higher than it was a month ago, now that the federal carbon tax has gone into effect, and the results are only going to be even more increased prices on absolutely everything. We are busy looking at our budget, realizing it's time to "black belt" it. And yet, I just feel so grateful that we have an intact home, our family is safe, hubby has a job, we have skills to cope, and that we have a great God who I trust will provide for our needs.

    1. Dear Jen, I am so glad everyone made it home and was safe and sound. That storm sounds so scary. How terrible. Yes if gas prices are up then the expenses always flow on to the consumer. It sounds like produce would have been wiped out over a large area. This is a strong reminder to me that we cannot rely on each season with gardening. Some are going to fail or be lower producing and some will be good... and we have to allow for that. The last two years my pumpkins failed. I am planning on completely new things to try. It is only four weeks to spring for us. I am glad you are all safe Jen. With much love Annabel.xxx

  19. Hi Annabel :-)
We must have been on the same wavelength last week! I began a complete pantry inventory too. I also relined all the shelves of our extra pantry in hubby's study (for easier cleaning and also to make the metal/wood of the shelving prettier) and grouped everything so that I can visually assess what's on hand on those lean weeks when I need to 'shop from the pantry'. I highly recommend doing that every so often to save money when big bills arrive or when someone in the family has a need. This coming week I will be making up jars of green tomato pickles, strawberry and apple jam, and lime curd as I have an abundance of them.
As our winter in the North Queensland tropics has been so warm, the bugs have been abundant doing what they can to destroy the veggie gardens. This weekend has been all about managing that, planting out more vegetables, and building another raised bed.
I'm tired from this physically exhausting winter (oh how I long for a real winter where I can snuggle under a blanket with hot chocolate for a while!) but being productive in the time God has given us, no matter the circumstances or weather, is satisfying.

    1. Dear Jenny, Yes we are on the same page for sure! I have continued with more of the same this week then I have two areas to do and I think I am where I want to be. I do feel raised beds get less bugs. In our climate anyway... it works. I also like the mesh food covers over somethings especially seedlings this works. And sewing giant mesh bags to go over taller things.
You would like our winter... the fire is going, hot packs and blankets, soup and casseroles! I have to say I now truly enjoy winter as it gives a rest. And now Im starting to get excited about Spring... but still have this month to enjoy winter. Yes we have to work with where we are and do all we can with what we have! With much love Annabel.xxx

  20. Dear Annabel🌹, what a good week you had! I love reading about and it motivates me a lot. Gumnut the koala is handsome and ready for baby hugs! We had a full week and because my husband takes up every opportunity to work extra hours at his job and even in weekends we had two days of vacation. We do only one day trips ( we can not leave home because of the animals, but we like it like that). A day was spent fishing - we came back with fish, wild mint that I have planted in the garden and lots of fresh green grass for the chickens and one day at the Aqua park with our son and two of his friends. My happy place is the swimming pool and the time with the boys swimming, singing in the car and chatting was beautiful. When we drove around the villages we have seen corn fields and sun flower fields beautiful and well grown but in the other parts of the country the drought destroyed the crops. Additionaly, the Russians are bombarding the grain deposites in Ukraine and one of the explosion was 200 m away from the Romanian border (not in my part though, it was down near the Danube river). You were right about the prices growing and about the grain crisis coming up. In that order we have purchased flour for the pantry and I was able to barter with the same coleague at work a Bread Making machine for knitting a cardigan with her yarn - so, I am the owner of a machine that made fresh bread today and it was delicious! Another tip for today: I was in the kitchen, did a small batch of calendula cream (with butter) and in the end I droped on the floor one recipient and 50 ml of good smelling cream was everywhere. Do not panic, I wipped up with paper napkins everything, folded them into a plastic container and I have shoe polish fo a while with a slight smell of calendula. Nothing is going to waste. Now I have two recipients with cream and a big jar with calendula in sun flower oil. Lots of love from far away. Laura_s_world from Romania

    1. Dear Laura, Your day trip sounds so beautiful!! To come home with fish, mint and greens for the chickens... so good! Corn and sunflower fields would be so beautiful.
I have tried to keep informed on developments... I saw the bombing of Odesa and about the ships on the Black Sea... I am glad you have flour and I would say get as far ahead with bread flour as you possibly can. I am just thrilled for you about the bread machine!! With a teenage boy to feed I think being able to have fresh bread everyday is just fantastic! Also as a gift a loaf of fresh bread is very nice. Also... you can let your bread machine make dough.. but stop if from cooking... and use the dough to make pizza or focaccia or anything else. I think that is very handy. Calendula cream sounds lovely!
What a good week you all had! With much love Annabel.xxx

  21. Gumnut is so cute! He looks like he is just waiting for a child to cuddle.
The cucumber and lettuces being so small...makes me sad. I wondered if Aerogarden is available where you are? I have 3 Aerogardens that I purchased at yard sales and through Facebook Marketplace for very little (one was $5, brand new in the box). They are super handy for starting seeds, which is what I primarily use them for. In early February or even January, I use them to start my flower seeds, tomatoes, peppers, and anything else that requires an early start. But they can also be used to grow all kinds of vegetables indoors. It's easy as pie to grow lettuce and other greens. It might not be enough for a daily salad, but certainly enough to top sandwiches or tacos throughout the week. Herbs do very well, too. It does cost electricity, but otherwise it's minimal expense beyond the seeds and pods (I buy an offbrand on Amazon).
My 5-foot tall zucchini plant finally got too top-heavy and broke in half. It still gave me 3 squash before it withered up! I have planted some more in some containers around the sides and front of my house. This week I put 10 cups of shredded zucchini in the freezer. We have enjoyed tomato and cheese sandwiches this week. My husband took some zucchini and tomatoes to a friend at work. I loved cutting zinnias to bring bouquets into the house, and every time I cut them more bloom in its place.
While cooking meals this week I tucked away some leftovers and extras into the freezer. I have cooked ground beef for a future spaghetti, one person's serving of roast beef and rice, and some chopped up pork chops to put into soup or something. Any other scraps were fed to the chickens, who enjoyed everything we gave them.
It has been so very hot and humid this week. A couple of days were in the high 90s Farenheit. My son was in football practice and band camp all week so we made sure he was set up with cold water and sunscreen. I spent a lot of time trying to make sure the chickens were okay -- refilling their waterers, giving them frozen vegetables (clearing out the deep freezers has been helpful), and putting out ice packs for them to sit near. I don't know that it helped, because they were just panting and miserable. I also covered their run with a shade cloth. Thankfully it is now raining, which has cooled things down quite a bit.
My son had a friend sleepover yesterday. I wanted to get them some junk food to enjoy. I was shocked at the prices of chips and such ($5.69 for a bag of Cheetos). Thankfully I had some CVS coupons, so I got $25 worth of items and paid only 69-cents...plus got 20 cents back through ibotta. Many years ago I used to scour the ads and coupon sites to get by, when we were buying diapers and such all the time. I got kind of lazy about it for the past decade or so, didn't bother with price matching unless it was a substantial savings. Looks like I will need to put those skills back in action.

    1. Dear Dianna, I have a friend who has an Aerogarden and she swears by it! I am successful with lettuce in my raised beds, just being winter I had stopped for a while. We have Spring in the air now and I will be planting a lot of lettuces and keeping them going. I would love to see Zucchini so big! I will be trying! Well done on the frozen meals. They will come in very handy! Well done on keeping the chickens going. They truly hate it and do badly in the heat. You did well on the treats for the boys! I have some friends who do the coupons and get a lot of free stuff... and very cheap. I wish we had these things here! I hope the weather has cooled for you! With love Annabel.xxx

  22. This week has been really hot but punctuated by thunderstorms and rain (which has been actually very good for our garden!) While prices are high in the stores, I have been finding lots of clearances on things that we use as staples- Flashfood app and my dear friend who works for a grocery chain! One of the local grocery chains sends me notices of 2 day sales on a certain produce item. This week it was sweet cherries for 99 cents/pound ($2.28/Kilo). I bought 12 Kilos to can cherry pie filling.
I canned 25 pounds of chicken breast ($1.25/pound) into pint jars to add to my shelves. Such a handy thing to have! I made 5 pounds of brown sugar because I was running low. And quilted 4 quilts this week for clients which brought in some always appreciated extra money!
Our garden is producing well- cabbages, Swiss chard, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, jalapeños, etc. We also have a volunteer pumpkin from our compost heap that is the size of a basketball!! Free food!
We’re doing better than so many that we are finding ways to share our bounty!

You had a fantastic week! The garden sounds amazing too! All the work and diligence you put in is paying off big time. Well done and I know you and Dave work as such a good team. You show what can be done if prepared to work hard! With much love Annabel.xxx

  23. Dear Annabel,
I love little gumnut. So adoreable.
Speaking of food prices, last week my husband had a doctor's appointment at the VA, and since we were on the base we decided to check out the Commissary and PX. What a shock. Usually groceries at the Commissary and items at the PX are far below those that are found in civilian grocery and drugstores. Not anymore. The prices at both were as high or higher than on the outside. Hard to believe that this is being done to active duty and veterans.
It's been very hot and humid here in south central in the upper 90's F, but we did finally get some rain and it has cooled off a bit by at least 10 degrees. This week I made Paula Deen's ooey gooey butter cake as I had a gluten free cake mix and some cream cheese that needed to be used and we were having guests for dinner. I baked 2 dozen gluten free zucchini muffins, made chocolate chip and dried cranberry scones , froze 8 containers of cream of zucchini soup base, froze 5 quarts of green beans, 4 pints of chard, 4 quarts of shredded zucchini for later use and harvested more beets, zucchini, chard, green beans and lettuce. Despite the heat the garden is doing well as it's mostly in containers and a raised bed so it's easy to water when it gets so dry here.
I have found more recipes for using up things that otherwise might go to waste. For instance, I found out that watermelon is in the cucumber family and that the green rinds that are generally used for pickles can be used in place of cucumber in salads, as well as cooked in curries. With carrot tops I make carrot top soup which is so delicious. I've been making oat flour for baking by grinding up oatmeal in the high speed blender rather than buying it already ground up. It works great for gluten free pancakes, waffles, and I made zucchini bread with it and it came out delicious. I found a recipe to make vegetable broth using dried herbs and spices rather than vegetables or vegetable scraps. Nothing is getting wasted here. Have a blessed week everyone. Cookie

    1. Dear Cookie, I think that is terrible about the Commissary prices. All of your baking sounds beautiful! I am noting your zucchini ideas! Very productive!
Also I am noting your use of the watermelon rind (I have heard of people using this) and carrot tops. You are a wealth of knowledge on gluten free alternatives, thank you so much! With love Annabel.xxx
