Feather your Nest Friday, 13th January, 2023.

Thank you to everyone who supported Denise and thanked her for her report from Bedford,  England.   I saw a lot of similarities between England and Canada from the two reports.   And there is a lot in common with Australia but we do not have way below zero temperatures to get through.   My hope it that we all learn something and glean things we can do to place our own household in a better position.   That is the whole point... that we all will be better prepared/forewarned...

The drug shortages are starting to hit here.   I feel I have reported on a lot of the things we are seeing in Australia but also maybe I should include an Australian report or two from someone other than myself.    I will get working on that!

So, my week...    As you already know we had a fire.  It was on Chloe and Lukes but it was closer to our house than theirs.   It was two paddocks and a dirt road from our house... I could see it from the kitchen window!   We were very lucky it was not hotter, it was not windy,  Andy saw it and got over there with our fire trailer and called for help.   We had quite a few fire trucks and farmers helping.   Actually the community is amazing and impressive.    I think it hit me today as today I feel like going on strike and doing nothing.   I can't though as there is garden to water,  animals to feed and so on.  But I can do just what must be done and be on strike for the rest!

My first photo is of the Birthday cake Chloe made me on Tuesday.   This was after having to evacuate on Monday!  She still made a special afternoon tea for me.

A bluebird!  On Tuesday morning I posted about using what we have, natural elements etc and meanwhile over the hill Chloe had decorated with gum leaves from a tree outside...

Mum also got to enjoy afternoon tea.   It was a very nice change of pace from the day before!

I am picking tomatoes every day now.   They ripened very late this year.   But that is ok they are coming in steadily.

I finished preserving the bargain tomatoes from last week.   Lots of full tomato pasta sauce and also relish.

Zucchini are also still coming in and I know I have another few that will be ready in the next couple of days.

I met my friend Wendy in town and she gave me a lovely set of vintage spice jars.   I also had great luck at the op shop and found some nice velvet fabric and also a heap of beautiful kids clothes.  They have been washed and distributed and some put away to grow in to.

I made a Date Loaf to share with Mum.

Each day I have made some progress on sewing projects.   I wanted to make some big carry all tote bags.  The first one is almost finished.  And I have other smaller projects lined up.

This week I got a beautiful box of peaches.   So far we are just living off them fresh.  If I need to I will make a crumble .... oven baked peach is one of the most delicious things on earth.

Tomorrow is going to be hot.   We have hit the weather where outdoor work is done in short bursts and quiet activities inside are best.    I have some sewing to work on and some notebooks I want to cover and decorate.   The main thing is no more fires!

A lot of us are having severe weather,  in some cases hot and in some cases freezing!  Either way this leaves us largely stuck inside laying low.  These are the times I update the photo albums,  make some cards,  go through my recipe books...  I am participating in the #threeriverschallenge with Jessica from Three Rivers Homestead.  This means I am going through my freezers,  using things up,  reorganising and making room for new produce.   It is good weather to have my head in the freezer anyway!

How did you build up your home, add to your pantry or garden this week?  I hope a lot of opportunities came your way! xxx

  1. Happy Birthday, Annabel! That cake is gorgeous! Chole did a spectacular job! So glad it wasn't windy and the fire didn't spread and that Andy and the others were able to get it under control!
My local grocer had wonderful deal on 5# bags of potatoes. With a special coupon, they were only $1.79! Normally they are almost $4. The limit was 5 bags, so that is what I bought. 10# have been shredded and are being freeze dried. The rest will be eaten in various ways over the next several weeks. I may also can some.
    Have a wonderful week!

  2. Firstly, I would like to wish you a happy birthday Annabel 🎉🎂

This week, I asked my hubby to teach me how to use our chainsaw. I’m 50 years old and have never used a chainsaw in my life! Anyway I got a crash course, and now I know how LOL! I chopped down an old mandarin tree, I’ve been watching the poor thing die a slow death for about 6 months, and it was time to cut my losses (so to speak) I planted that tree with my own hands about 15 years ago!! Anyway, I didn’t let my loss go without a fight, I mulched all the smaller branches and added them to the compost bin to become precious compost in several months time, and, using the chainsaw I cut up all the bigger limbs and stacked them up to dry and be used in our pizza oven when dry enough…waste not want not!

I had the best luck this week and managed to get over 30 Fowler Vacola jars for free!! I happened to be chatting to a work colleague about the preserving I do, 2 days later she messaged me to say her brother had some jars in his shed, and they were mine if I wanted them! I drove 2.5 hours (round trip) to collect them,
but it was totally worth the petrol money. I took some home preserves to him as a thank you gift and he gave me a dozen fresh farm eggs as an extra bonus!

I’ve been making an extra effort to collect things that may be useful down the track. I’ve asked work colleagues to save glass jars for me for preserving, but also at work yesterday I asked a patient if I could have the newspapers he was going to throw out, it occurred to me how rare newspaper is getting these days (compared to times past) and it is so useful for all manner of things, wrapping items, compost, chicken bedding when shredded etc etc…I plan on grabbing it when and where I can!

Have a lovely week Annabel and Bluebirds. As always I look forward to being inspired by you all ❤️🐦

    1. Dear Cheryl, Well done on learning how to use the chainsaw and then getting to work with it! Fantastic! It is just fantastic about the jars! I absolutely think we must let everyone know we preserve... we are always after jars and produce and get that message through everyone heads for times like this! The older Fowlers jars are just beautiful. The thick glass... I love them! I think you are very wise about possible resources... newspaper is a good one. From fire lighter to chicken bedding, mulch... packing etc it has a lot of uses. Last night I enjoyed watching Tess on you tube. (Tess Frugal Living) She collects firewood and kindling... wherever she goes she watches for it. They have it so cold and people around her are not affording heating. In hard times firewood is very valuable. Like matches. I really like your thinking! You had a great week! With love Annabel.xxx

    2. Cheryl, I would never have thought of newspapers as a resource, but you are 110% correct. Good on you!

  6. Happy birthday and all the good wishes in the world!

It is ok to feel overwhelmed after such a roller-coaster week! Try to have some rest and enjoy all the little things.

We have a warm weather, spring like, which is very unusual, so I worked one afternoon outside, tidying around the house/garden and cleaning the chicken coop - I succeded to fall going to the compost pile and injured quite bad my right shoulder - now I feel pain whenever I move my right arm. But one of my golden ladies gifted me with one egg! I was childishly happy!

We started the new year by going to doctor for the annual check-up and blood analyzes - all 3 of us are all right, which I think is the first step to keep going.

The prices for food are higher this month than the last month and the bill for heating gas, although we were careful with, is very big. Adding the car insurance, fuel, taxes at the beginning of the year - I was going to participate in the #threeriverschallenge anyway, but now more than ever I will use what I have in the pantry and make do with what we have. A big peace of mind is that we were expecting all of these and are prepared to live bellow our means.

Crafts and handmade evenings are occupied with knitting a bordeaux cardigan for my husband. Finally!

    Best wishes, Laura_s_world from Romania

  7. Happy belated birthday! Here in the UK I read that cough/cold remedy shelves in some supermarkets were empty. I found some and so I bought one each of our preferred meds which had a long shelf life, I didn't buy loads... I left some for others as I figured I still have enough to last 12 months. I did stock up on paracetamol though as I use that every day for lupus and parkinsons pain and if I ran out I'd have to take a heavier prescription drug which I'm putting off as long as I can. The basic dishwasher soap was less than half price at £1.79 so we stocked up on that. I've nearly finished crocheting another sofa throw. I planned my kitchen garden. I know my disability will limit my planting this year but I made plans for salad leaves, pea shoots, spinach, kale, potatoes and tomatoes Thank you for sharing good ideas!

I am really amazed how much it is possible to grow in a few pots or a small area. It all helps and adds fresh goodness to our meals. Also I believe the being outside in the sun etc is good for us too. Have a lovely weekend! xxx

  8. What a lovely cake! Happy Birthday! I am so thankful that the fire was seen and stopped.

Severe weather is a real concern. The weather is oddly warm for winter and severe storms and tornadoes are a real concern. We were under a watch for several hours yesterday.

We were able to buy six dozen eggs for $2.58 each. This was a blessing and will supply us for several weeks. Our dishwasher door latch broke and my husband was able to remove the part and go to the parts store and order the part for $17. So it is dishwasher appreciation week! You don't really appreciate the helpers until they are not available!

    Wishing you a restful day.

  9. hello annabel and friends, your cake is beautiful- bluebirds are my favorite, when i am having a stressful time if one appears i know that God is near because they are infrequent visitors here. one appeared on my deck when i was concerned about my dads salvation. that was the first time i had ever seen one here. this week i did my freezer clean out of rhubarb, strawberries and blueberries, making concentrates for drinks and syrup for pancakes and waffles. these will taste good and you can control the sugar. speaking of making carry totes, i saw an idea to make them from feed and large birdseed bags if they are made from burlap or the woven plastic that they use now. just a suggestion to recycle. thank you for denise's report, i have passed it on to many people. have a blessed day and stay cool;) bonnie

Well this is funny what you are saying about Bluebirds. My Dad would always comment on Robins. If he saw a Robin he would tell me. They are very uncommon here. Now Red Robins turn up at the most interesting times...
I do make bags from some of the chicken feed bags and save the goat feed bags as well. My friend Wendy also makes them into bags they are really strong and kind of cute with the animals on the front. Thank you very much for sharing Denises report! With love, Annabel.xxx

  12. Hi Annabel and everyone,

What a gorgeous cake your daughter made! Her table looks so beautiful. And you did so well with the produce this week! I'm thankful you are all ok with the fire so close.

Doing your idea of "1 extra thing" has been helping a lot, Annabel, thank you. Over the weekend I baked muffins and did some cross-stitch finishing. Monday I did a big stock-up shop at the price club; I had to go to the regular grocery store in between and was absolutely shocked at the prices there, especially on protein sources and eggs. Tuesday was laundry day for the linens and I cooked a big meat and veggie stir fry to make some extra meals. Wednesday I visited another craft store for their after-holidays clearance - my best find was 20 spools of ribbon for $4! (Ribbon is usually very expensive here.) Overall I saved a lot more than I spent, and it will be great for gifts and decorating. Thursday I organized the small freezer and made heart and flower soaps for Valentine's gifts. Today I am using up some eggs in more baking, used some greeting cards from stash for family, punched out some tags, and will be working on a new cross-stitch piece after work.

The most fun frugal thing that happened this week was that I received a free copy of a Gooseberry Patch cookbook in the mail, because I had contributed a recipe that they decided to publish. It's one of my muffin recipes, so that felt very fitting!

Does anyone has any suggestions for tasty and nutritious things without a lot of sugar, or that are good for folks with fluctuating blood sugar? I would so appreciate it.My husband's blood sugar is elevated because of his chemo drugs. (We have good doctors and are following their instructions. They have given him a medication to take, and I am trying hard with lots of non-starchy veggies and good protein sources, but it is a big learning curve and every little bit helps so much.)

I hope everyone has a good week.

    1. Dear Kathy, You are doing so well with everything you are getting done. An extra thing adds up very fast. You did some great stocking up too!
I can help with the low sugar ... think in terms of carbohydrates are sugar in that they become sugar once ingested. High GI carbs become sugar super super fast ie mashed potatoes, white flour... Because I am guessing you want to keep your husbands calories and nutrients up and his blood sugars down... I would pretty much wean out breads, cereals, high sugar fruits, pasta etc. Breakfast seems to be the high carb meal of the day for a lot of people... so an omelette or eggs and mushrooms and a tomato and so on are good breakfasts. Berries are very low sugar... Really any meat and veg/salad are good just by substituting lower GI veggies for potato. Nuts, cheese added to salad. Vinegar and lemon juice both lower GI in foods and lower blood sugar levels so use them liberally. Andy is diabetic... and I used to work at Curves which had a low GI diet option and so from this I ended up learning... I make a lot of variations on Quiches... and impossible pies which is just quiche with some flour added for body... but the flour amount is very small and you end up with a muffin like quiche that is high protein. I hope this helps and ask if you need more and I will think more too!
Have a lovely weekend, your cards and cross stitch sound just lovely. I am working on some small sewing projects and cards too. With much love Annabel.xxx

  14. Dear Annabel, happy belated birthday. Chloe has such style! I love that table setting, it’s magnificent and how pretty is the cake! You could not get better in any restaurant! I’m so impressed. I’m sorry that the fire was so close. It must have been so frightening. Take time to rest, these things take it out of us. I’m being careful with money, but needed another pair if school shorts for DS in the next size but didn’t want to spend $60. There they were in the thrift store for $2. I’ve been trying to crochet more, and I listen to YouTube at the same time. I’m going to try and stock up with medicines and learn a couple of herbal remedies for fever, cough etc I do take medicine for anxiety, (silly overthinking brain) so I should research a herbal remedy for this as well. You just never know the next shortage or out of stock item. Lots of love, Lily

    1. Dear Lily,
Well done on getting the shorts for $2!! $60 for kids shorts is just terrible. I also have anxiety. There are good remedies but they cannot be taken with prescribed meds. St Johns Wort is very good. My doctor got me on to that but it cannot be taken at the same time. I like Rescue Remedy and do swear by that and it can be taken along with medication. I would say ask your Dr if there was ever a shortage of your med what to do. Like a back up plan. Also I think get as far ahead with any medication as possible... we are trying to do that. With much love Annabel.xxx

I've just been catching up on your posts from the start of January as we have had a busy time away, then my dad had a heart attack and now half of us are sick. Still, we are getting better, Dad is back home and so are we which, I think, is the best place to be when the heat is soaring. Our garden is finally taking off but there is nothing ready to harvest yet. Thankfully the chooks are still laying and there are plenty of potatoes in the garden beds. Are you also noticing the lack of potatoes and frozen potato chips in the shops in SA? I'm glad we planted extra this year!
I love your Save Like Nana Did posts. I'll be sharing an inspired post over on my blog if you'd like to stop by.

  18. Happy birthday Annabel! I always love to see Chloe’s baking and presentation, she makes everything so beautiful! I hope you did manage to go on strike for a bit lol, you definitely deserve the rest!

Your peaches look beautiful. I know you’ll be excited about this… I found cheap legs of ham this week. I bought one, it worked out around $8/kg. My son had a great time cutting it up. There was so much meat! So the next day I decided to buy another. We haven’t cut that one yet. This will be such a big boost to our freezer. And it’s such a tasty way to add flavour without having to add heaps of meat. So I was really happy to get them.

I’ve done a full pantry and freezer stocktake, and have planned to use up certain foods in the next couple of weeks.

I also gave our wardrobe a bit of a makeover with new hangers and some storage boxes. It’s been a dumping ground since we moved in and I was sick of it. It was money well spent, I love having a look in there lol. I also did a stocktake of craft stuff and have a few things to make to use up some supplies, and can then start a big project I’m looking forward to.

I hope you have a restful weekend and there are no more fire scares.

    * I our Bible Study we had to tell someone that encouraged you and noticed your spiritual gifts. As we all shared I was reminded how I am to be encouraging the younger women. I used to have a couple I mentored and I will ask God to show me women that need encouraging words. I have my daughters and DILs and definitely seek ways with them. I am also going to sign up to rotate and help in the nursery so that I can be a smiling face for those moms and kids.
    * I am eating from the freezers and pantry as much as I can. I have gotten creative to use bits and had some successful experiments.
    * We had tornadoes come through Thursday. One caused damage about 15 miles, and they mentioned my neighborhood area and said get in cover. So I was in the closet under the stairs for a few minutes. The power was out and I have a flashlight and my phone flashlight, but the lantern and two other flashlights didn't have batteries, my phone wouldn't load the TV station, and I couldn't hear updates until the electricity came back on..The weather radio needed batteries and I couldn't get the cover off. I had put on tennis shoes, we have motorcycle helmets in our safe room, and I filled 2 pitchers with water that morning. We get a lot of tornadoes so I always have stuff prepped and ready. Our good lantern is in the camper, stored offsite. So, I was mad at myself that I didn't have the flashlight batteries in all the flashlights, or the little lantern or weather radio. I've taken care of all that now.

  24. Annabel, It sounds like you had a lovely birthday. Happy belated birthday to you. I was able to feather my nest by buying a year's worth of canned tomatoes and tomato sauce as they were on "sale." Of course the new sale price is what the regular price a year ago. But I figured the price was not going to go down any time soon. Growing tomatoes is a hit or miss thing for me. I can usually get enough for fresh eating but rarely enough to can great quantities. I usually end up driving an hour away to a farm to get canning tomatoes each year. The store also had pasta at the new sale price so I bought 6 boxes which, added to what I have in the pantry gives us more than a year's worth as we cannot eat a lot of pasta these days. Our precious grandsons love spaghetti when they come visit each month so I like to keep the noodle on hand for them. I am loving your Nana posts and your posts on the state of the world with the other bluebirds has been eye opener to say the least. I look forward to hearing from other bluebirds in the world. Here in my corner of the US eggs are almost $5/ dozen. There are fewer choices of items, for example, cereal. I used to have an entire aisle of cereals to choose from, but now it is about a third of an aisle. Thank goodness we don't eat much breakfast cereal. The medicine aisle at a variety of stores have quite a few empty shelves. Thank goodness we are pretty well stocked up. As I mentioned in prior comments antibiotics are getting hard to come by. Interesting times. So thankful for your ideas and encouragement.

  25. I feel I've done nothing at all to save but I did go grocery shopping this week. I saved a good bit picking up clearance and buy one get one free items. I have not bought pork in a good many years, but we are now adding it back into our diet. I won't complain over our prices. They are high, but we are blessed to be able to buy. I do hunt and look hard for good prices, and use what I can afford. Praise God for all the lessons in how to keep food frugal in our household over the years!

I had an eye opening look at our accounts from last year and discovered that we had spent more than 37% more than I'd budgeted. In considering the budget and trying to determine whether or not we could increase the budget this year, I realized that I'd been working harder, shopping harder and making do harder in the past year than I had in many many years. I didn't see how I could work or shop harder than I had last year nor waste any less. I increased the budget but am still looking for ways to trim and cut all areas.
