Feather your Nest Friday, 21st October, 2022.

It has been a hectic week and today it ended with a downpour of an inch of rain.  That is a lot for us and just fantastic.  I am sorry for all the places in Australia that have been flooded as that is just terrible but for us this afternoons rain was a real blessing.

Because the week has gone by so quickly I am very glad to sit, stop and consider what I actually did.   It is a bit of a blur to be honest.   Last night I was talking with a friend and we both said our lists were so long they were overwhelming.   So today I just worked to cross as many things off the list as I could.   I have always loved Elizabeth Elliot's "do the next thing."  When you don't know where to even start just do the next thing.  It all adds up in the end.  I would like to pay tribute to Mimi who taught me so much especially with recipes, cooking tips, management and more and she always shared that her Mother lived by "just do one more thing."  Mimi tragically passed away this week and I am forever thankful to her for so many things but I will carry on her and her Mothers advice to just do one more thing.

Early in the week  I added a lot of seedlings to my garden.   I counted as I went...

18 Lettuces in my stack planters.

6 Yellow Zucchini.

7 Continental cucumbers.

6 Basil.

8 Tomato.

I was watering daily up until this rain today.

I have been picking Snow Peas and Broad Beans every day.

The ducks have grown.  After a couple of days two more Guinea Fowl hatched out.   Before they hatched one lone Guinea was just a buddy amongst the ducks.  No one seemed to realise but someone looked to be the odd one out.

Tomorrow the ducks are going outside to my outdoor brooder and they are getting a swimming pool.   (An old baking dish.)  The Guinea Fowl are tiny and will remain inside.

I really love the ducks.  They are very entertaining.   I think messing around with ducklings and Guineas is the source of some of my time issues!  😊

Now that this batch of eggs is finished hatching I collected another 14 Guinea Fowl eggs and got them started in the incubator.

My mint in pots is looking good so I gave this one a trim and made a lovely Raita and a Butter Chicken dinner.

I made Banana Muffins to use up some Bananas I bought on a big special.

I saved egg shells and banana skins for the garden.

The food processor was used to chop heaps of Chard and Spinach for the dehydrator.

It was little Tom's second birthday.  Chloe made an absolutely beautiful cake and set it up so a train ran on a track around it.  It was impressive and a massive hit!

We had a beautiful afternoon tea and it was just a lovely time.

I made a big batch of Spaghetti Sauce.   Some was shared, some eaten and some frozen.

In the stores I found some really good deals.  This was amazing as lately there have not been good deals at all.   I check all the catalogues.  If one of us goes anywhere I check the catalogues for that town.   The local town has a Fruit and Veg shop with a Facebook page.   By watching that I saw that they had an amazing deal on Broccoli.  I went in and it was beautiful so I got ten kilos.  (22 pounds.)  The supermarket also had a fantastic deal on hand soap. laundry soaker, shampoo and conditioner.   I stocked up on them all.

The chemist had a gift with purchase which was a bag of all kinds of things which included shampoo, toothpaste, items for the first aid kit and more.

Some of us have very big worries with the cold weather coming in and electricity and gas issues.  One of my Bluebird friends in the UK has given me updates this week.   If you live in a place that gets sub zero temperatures please have ways to stay warm and cook without gas or electricity.   Here we will soon be preparing for fire season.   Spring has been beautiful and I am enjoying it but we have things to do before we get hot weather.  For us the hottest time is usually between Christmas and March.

I hope you had a good week.  How did you build up your home, pantry or garden? I hope many opportunities came your way! xxx

All I can really say is what her daughter posted on her Facebook page which is Mimi had a terminal cancer diagnosis and died in four weeks, this week. I did not know and got such a shock. I still dont even feel like it is possible or true... but it is. Yes you captured her message to make everyday beautiful! So we must continue to do that! With love Annabel.xxx

  4. The cake your daughter made is so adorable. I love it.
It was surprisingly cold here in upper Florida .
We had to cover the gardens up,cover our citrus and put young seedlings in the greenhouse.
I awoke to my large concrete bird baths frozen over.
    In Florida,in October!
    I've never seen that before.
I am deeply saddened by the lose of Mimi.

  5. Dear Anabelle,
First of all Happy Birthday for Tom! Beautiful boy - beautiful cake. Congratulations for Chloe, too!
Condolleances for Mimi passing - what remains after us counts so much for so many, like her mother*s words, like her recipes. She will be remembered every time you make something she taught you - I truly believe people really die only when no one thinks of them....
Another witchy thing I do always is collect mint and other herbs on a sunny and holy day or on Sunday, at noon, when the sun is at the highest - that way the scent and their healing power is stronger.
We are in a wonderful autumn time, with all the glorious colours and bounty of harvest - but we had the first night with subzero temperatures (freezing at soil) and my golden ladies stopped laying eggs for as week. They are moulting, also, so I think that is the reason.
    I adore your funny ducklings!
Our prices are higher everyday, Russia threatens everybody, including our country, and we get a lot of advice on TV on how to turn off the heat, the electricity, how to stock on food while we can - sometimes I feel the panic escalading and I calm myself down remembering I do that for some time now....
Everyday I did small steps - harvesting wall nuts, processing quinces into jelly and jam, (I still have some kilos to go through), dehydrating apples, celery and mint almost constantly, cleaning the garden and the house, cooking from scratch, knitting, enjoying family time and avoiding TV.

I wish you and everyone a beautiful weekend and peaceful days. With love, Laura_s_world from Romania

I am glad now they are advising you to stock up and prepare because some people do not see what is in front of them. The down side is when everyone realises there could be panic. So it is good you are very well ahead Laura.

The weather is cooling down quickly here and we are diligently preparing the house as well as setting up shelters for the neighborhood stray kitties. 21. Afternoon Annabel,
Yes many of us are saddened by Mimi's unexpected, to us death. The best way to keep someone's memory alive is to live a beautiful life in their honour and remember and use all the wonderful ways of living they shared with us.
Anabel those little ducklings are too cute. I imagine that you have a dam they live on or do they stay close to the house?

Here in NZ it is a long weekend, being Labour Day on Monday. I also took yesterday off to make it an extra long weekend. Yesterday DP and I visited our port suburb of Lyttelton. We picked up some reading material from the library and wondered down the street. One of the little shops I popped into sold second hand clothes. I picked up two lovely tops. One was $10 and the other a cardigan was $15. This is a little more than I usually pay but they are in excellent condition and both tops will go together and with many outfits. I know the cardigan retails for about $119 new, so still a great price for me.

Today was our shopping day and after we finished and packed it away we went to one of our other seaside suburbs of Summer. It was a beautiful afternoon and we enjoyed a walk along the sea front.

Tomorrow it is going to be 24C so I will be out water blasting the pathways and terrace, deck, and front steps. I am not sure about anyone else but I love water blasting.
Monday is going to rain so I will empty and clean out the pantry. I will also be making a lemon syrup cake for a colleagues birthday on Tuesday. I am also going to make some labna to go with crackers and sweet chilli sauce.

Chloe's birthday cake she made for Thomas is just gorgeous. She is very talented.

Laura I am thinking of you in Romania. It must be very scary having all that happening so close to you.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Mandy.

    2. Dear Mandy, thank you for thinking of me. It is scary, as from today even France sends army in our country - like it gets bigger and bigger and in the night hours you can hear the alarm siren from Ucraine - I live 10 minutes walking by foot from the border. All I can do is prepare, take care of my family, pray and hope. It is amazing how much strenght can God give you in hard times. Regarding New Zeeland (my fav. country all over the world) I am reading a book that has its action in the 1800 colonial New Zeeland - Sarah Lark, In the Land of the Long White Cloud - part of a trilogy. Have a nice week, Laura_s_world from Romania

Your ducklings and the lone Guinea fowl are a delight. You have a good success rate with your incubator.
Since downsizing I now have a very small patio but big enough for two pots of tiny tomatoes. Every time I water them I think of you and your advice and encouragement on container gardening, no matter how small.

  28. Hi from the UK. I would like to clarify the gas and electricity situation. I am married to a engineer in the gas industry. The gas will not be cut as if it is gas mains and household connections have to be disconnected, purged to get all the air out then reconnected. Air in the pipes could cause an explosion. The gas is used to make electricity, if there is a shortage then the electricity will be cut. Unfortunately this means gas boilers won’t work but gas cookers will still work. When we had 3 hour electricity cuts in the 70’s we went to a friend when we had no power and they came to us when they had cuts.

I love Chloe's ingenuity in creating that cake and the train track with Thomas on top of the cake is adorable!

I would love to say I did just loads this week but mostly what I've done is stay out of the grocery and made the best of what I have.

I made an apple crisp with apples that my husband wouldn't touch. Funnily enough he didn't recognize them in the crisp and ate that right up, lol.

It's been cool enough here for frost several mornings. So glad I went out to gather in herbs and the last flowers this past week. Though the basil never did do much of anything, I was rather pleased to get about a gallon bag of the leaves and stems to freeze. I'd read that many Italians preferred frozen basil to dried and figured they knew, so I froze it.

In the week ahead I'm focusing on what I might do to be a help to my daughter who is moving next weekend. I'm planning to roast a whole chicken, which I think would be handy for both sandwiches and meals. I'm also going to send along a loaf of Pumpkin Banana bread.

I think it really loves heat. But I keep trying and get some. Meals will help your daughter so much! It is one thing less to think about when moving! That is very nice. With love Annabel.xxx

  30. Dear Annabel

Wow Happy 2nd Birthday to Thomas, I cannot believe how fast that time has gone. What a gorgeous cake made by Chloe

In the past week I have been receiving photos, calendars, and Christmas ornament I had made. I can now happily start to put the photos in albums I have for DD12 and DNiece of our holiday together as part of their presents this year. I have finally finished Mum's quilt up to the point of hand sewing the binding on.

Yesterday we had a horrible storm and hail here, school had to keep kids back as it was to dangerous for the buses to be on the road and there was localised flooding, so almost an hour later they arrived home. It has been dreadfully hot here already yesterday saw 33 and today is 34 but nights have been in the mid 20's and once again today with the humidity and heat it was already 32 at 9am and storms and hail are predicted once again.

    The ducks are so cute

    Take Care
