Feather your Nest Friday, 22nd July, 2022.

It has been a week of food and chickens judging by the photos on my phone!  It is cold and I have hit Friday afternoon feeling tired.   With so many experiencing heatwaves I will not complain about our temperatures.

Some of the ways I built up the house, garden and pantry included:-

I finished planting out the Aloe Vera from my Uncles place.  They look great in the garden and I have four in pots to trade with.

Two big pots, also from my Uncle, were filled with good soil ready to be planted up.

I picked a bunch of celery and dehydrated it over the fire place.

The lambs were "promoted" to one bottle a day.  They are five weeks old now.

The incubator had two lots of eggs going and they were a week apart in due dates.   The first lot were chicken eggs and I got five chicks.   The second lot (which were hatching up until yesterday)  gave me five Bantams.  These eggs were from a friend.    They are so cute and different a bit like when the Quail hatched!

They were full of surprises!  To give you an idea of the sizes here are two Bantams with a week old regular chicken...

I think the next round in my incubator will be more Quail.  This is so much fun!

I continued on the new baby meal delivery service.

The Broccolini was from our garden.

Another night was lamb and veggies.

I made Honey Gingerbread biscuits.

Also I did a couple of bigger cook ups.   These both gave me meals plus freezer meals.

First was Chicken Enchiladas... to freeze I assemble them but don't cook any further.

I got 18 Enchiladas all up.

The next day I did a big pot of spaghetti sauce.   I delivered one lot as a hot ready to serve dinner.

I also made up a couple of Pasa bakes.  Cheese sauce is a great stretcher of the meat sauce.   All of these meals were yummy cold weather food.  My ready frozen meals have increased too.

We have some early signs of Spring.   Wattle is coming out and several bulbs are flowering.

Lucy has been really sick with Covid.  Please pray as she has Fibromyalgia and Migraines and the combination of all three has been just terrible for her.

Baby Chase is beautiful and doing well.  Little Thomas is so sweet and patient,  he has been a little star.

I am planning some follow up posts to  Turn a Little into a Lot and Ask and you Shall Receive.   To remind us I am going to ask you how was your week?  How did you build up your home or pantry this week?  Did you find ways to turn a little into a lot?  Did you pray and did you put your needs out there!?   This reminds me of when I wanted Quail eggs.  I did ask around my circle but had no luck.  Yet when I posted the request online I had a reply in under an hour and collected the eggs a week later from my nearest town!  WHY hadn't I asked before!?   Whatever will help you, ask!

Yesterday I was watching a You Tube video... it was Jess from Roots and Refuge Farm.  The video was called "Yes I am concerned about food."   Over time I have found Jess to be very encouraging and positive.   Always positive.   Something she said was just lovely.  Here it is:   "we need to be focused on making sure there is no shortage of food in our own home and we can do that but it's time to take it really seriously..."  "because I feel pretty confident in my ability to keep shortage out of my home but I want to walk with you to keep it out of your home also..."

That is what we are doing together and the more we learn the better!  It is amazing what we can do in a week, with a plan!   xxx

  1. Annabel I can't get over how much smaller the bantam chicks are compared to the other chick
They are seriously cute, all of them.
Your enchiladas look so good. Do you make them gluten free and if you do, what do you use for the enchilada?
I am sorry to hear Lucy is so unwell with COVID and her co-exsisting health conditions. Not easy for a mum with a young family. I send her my best wishes and hopes for a good recovery.
We have the very same bulbs up in our garden 3the crazy thing is they have been up for about a month. We have had two weeks of rain here. Tomorrow afternoon is meant to be fine so I may get a chance to do my garden along the driveway
I certainly hope so but we shall see.
Lovely to hear little Thomas is enjoying his new baby brother.

    1. Dear Mandy, Thank you! I have found Gluten Free tortillas not very good... and I havent ventured into making them myself. So I make up all the enchiladas with regular tortillas and for myself I have some rice with the chicken enchilada mix on top then sour cream and grated cheese. it is delicious this way so I dont feel like I am missing out.
I hope you get a break from the rain for some outdoor time and to get to your garden. It is raining here but today I am packing up to take Mum to the city. Have a lovely weekend! With love Annabel.xxx

    2. Annabel: I use corn tortillas instead of flour tortillas, for my gluten free family, and make it as a lasagna (corn tortillas are difficult to fold). The meal is always a hit!

  2. Dear Annabel,
I was greatly saddened to learn about Lucy and of course we will be praying for her speedy recovery. Your new baby meals look absolutely delicious. The chicks are so cute. It has been a very busy week here building my home and pantry. , As you know I was gifted with a 5 gallon bucket of zucchini , which was an answer to prayer as borers destroyed my plants, and much of the week has been taken up with preserving it by making soup bases, chunks, shredded for later zucchini muffins and breads, some stuffed for late meals, impossible pies and loads of zucchini fritter, just to name a few things I doing with it. I harvested and froze green beans. At the farm market I found broccoli crowns for $1.79 a pound and bought 3 pounds to freeze as well as cauliflower. Green peppers were 40 cents apiece and I bought 10 to supplement what we are trying to grow but seem to be at a standstill due to the excessive heat. Some will be dehydrated, some will be frozen and some will be made into a meal we love which is deconstructed stuffed pepper.

Loads of cilantro and basil got harvested. With the cilantro I made lots of salsa and with the basil more pesto got made. I made several "copycat" resturant meals using the salsa and pesto for meals during the week and also to add to the freezer The last of the beets got harvested, roasted and some were frozen for later use in no'mato sauce. We also went to the orchard this week and took home 20 pounds of peaches of which some got processed yesterday and the rest will be processed today. I made a peach cobbler for dessert last night and froze the rest.

I have been watching youtube videos as well and found one called Prepper Princess. She has some really good advice on cutting costs on phone, internet service, insurance, fuel bills, amongst other things. Wishing all of the Bluebirds a happy, healthy and safe week ahead. Blessings, Cookie

I will check out Prepper Princess. I love having a new channel to watch. You tube has completely replaced TV for me. I am learning so much! Thanks so much Cookie, with love Annabel.xxx

  4. Hi Annabel and everyone,

Beautiful cooking, Annabel, and your two extra posts last week were so timely for me and very appreciated. I struggle with "asking" and it was really helpful advice and a good reminder. I will light a candle for Lucy and hope she is feeling better soon. And Congratulations on your new family member!

These past few weeks have been a little different and expensive with paying the final amount for storm damage repairs on the house and my husband doing a lot of medical visits to figure out what is going on. The big scary stuff was ruled out with endoscopy, but it is really only the past few days that he's been feeling mostly well and able to eat. We are thankful he seems to be improving now! And it is so good to have savings and health insurance and homeowner's insurance during this time - and the pantry and freezer were big helps in having nutritious food and mild things I could make up for him to drink in smoothies.

Yesterday I did a big shop with cleaning items and restocking some pantry items and produce, and the store gave me a reusable tote bag full of individual serving beverages and pedialyte - very nice and all things we can use. I hot-water washed every soft item that could be washed (bedding, mattress pads, curtains, towels) since we have had terrible dust and tiny debris from wildfires. Our home is in no danger, but the HVAC filters in our house are turning black (those have been getting switched out earlier, too).

With "asking," I have been worrying a lot because inflation is so high right now - everything is getting more expensive and I am noticing huge price increases on things from just a month or so ago, including our power bill even though we have used less power this year than last year. Until I read your post, I hadn't realized that "asking" had fallen by the wayside for me - and to be honest I am timid about doing it in person and need to be better (I will offer to help someone, but am reluctant to ask around for myself or my needs). Well, in my first few days of "asking" in all the forms you talked about - 1) we were offered help with shopping or other needs (which I don't need, but was very appreciated and lifted my spirits); 2) a friend and colleague who just got a wonderful new position gave me a chunk of her time and some great career advice and offered to be a resource and reference for me; and 3) without any action or words on my part, my boss surprised me with a salary increase justification letter that will go to our compensation committee for approval for a substantial increase in pay for me. All good things!

I hope everyone has a good weekend, and has what they need.

    1. Dear Kathy, Firstly it is very good the bad things were eliminated for your husbands health. I hope he continues to improve now. Also I hope you continue to ask! I hope your pay increase is approved promptly! This is wonderful. With asking friends/family/ strangers it might work for you to ask in writing... ie post "does anyone have a dehydrator they would be willing to lend me?" kind of thing. It might get you what you need and also it will give family and friends a clue as to what you do need... and believe me family and friends love to know what is on your list because figuring out what to get someone is hard work. I LOVE when I know just what the girls are needing! It is helpful!
You did a great big shop and all that washing would have been a lot of work but things must feel so clean and fresh. Have a lovely weekend! With love Annabel.xxx

We seem to get more and more haze from the summer wildfires that come from the north in British Columbia. In addition to HVAC filters, we tape a 12”x 12” furnace filter to the intake side of a box fan that also helps to filter out tiny smoke particles as it helps move the cool air from our portable AC when we need to keep the house closed up. We are always surprised by how dirty they get!

  5. I'm so sorry to hear Lucy is struggling with all these health issues, and I will definitely keep her and the family in prayers. Your meal delivery service is such a tasty blessing to them! All your little chickens are so cute, too. You must be swimming in eggs at times. The week here has been very hot but good. I spent time in the basement reorganizing my recent pantry purchases, which I had willy-nilly shoved into totes. I'm rotating canned goods and marking dates with a darker marker so I use things in better order. I made a dinner last night with steamed, then sautéed, cabbage, potatoes and spiral smoked ham pieces. I used some cabbage I had chopped and frozen as an experiment in the spring, and we were totally pleased with the result. The frozen cabbage will be perfect cooked in casseroles, soup, etc. Whew, since I will need to freeze some of the 17 heads that we are starting to harvest! I will also do a freezer challenge the next couple of weeks to make room for said cabbage! :) And I dug out some small hand applique projects to work on at night when I'm watching tv. Hope everyone has a good weekend!

  6. Sorry to hear about Lucy and, like everyone else, am praying for a speedy and complete recovery!
My garden harvest is surpassing any other year we’ve had and Dave and I are trying to be much more aware of how to expand it even further. I harvested a huge cabbage this morning and immediately planted green bush beans in its place. I pulled out some of my green bean plants that are nearing the end of their harvest (I canned 32 pints!) and planted peas. My goal is to replant in every spot in the garden that opens up!
I harvested another small bowl of green beans this morning and will freeze those until I have enough for a batch to can.
In an hour I am going to pick up my first Azure Standard order about 10 minutes from my house. They bring orders once a month and for my 50 pounds of 9 grain rolled cereal (which is hard to source locally and would require a 90 minute drive to Amish country to see if they have it) plus 50 pounds of dry corn and 5 pounds of buttermilk powder, 105 pounds total weight, they charge me $6.14 in shipping by their semi truck from Oregon to Ohio (over 2000 miles)!!
It seems really organized and I’ll probably start ordering from them again. I like that I can order monthly! Their prices were extremely good too!!
So, there are still blessings/opportunities if we keep our eyes and ears open!!

  7. Greetings, Annabel and all bluebirds, from the beautiful mountains of southwest Virginia, USA. I am new to this blog but have been inspired by your posts, Annabel. I considered myself to be a prepared person, but your posts on preparedness showed me several areas in which I can improve. I have experienced, fire, flood, earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, blizzards, drought, extreme heat and cold and just about any other natural disaster. There is nothing like living through a disaster to teach valuable lessons. But with each experience I learned to be better prepared. Your suggestion of preparing freezer meals really hit home with me. There have been times when I wished I had something to grab and heat. So I have taken the idea and have been double batch cooking, not just for my family but to share as well. One never knows when an opportunity will arise in which you can help another person. Your blog has been a major positive in my life. It always calms my spirit and teaches me something new. This week I have added to my pantry by canning peaches, beans, chicken broth, dill pickles and corn relish. I have frozen zucchini in every possible form; shredded, zoodled, and in a vegetable lasagna. I have dehydrated greens and shredded zucchini. Here in the Appalachian Mountains the heat has really been felt this week. We rarely hit above 90F but we are in the mid90's this week. I have been watering the gardens every other evening to keep things alive and have also covered most of my beds with shade cloth. Hopefully things will keep on producing as I have not met my annual quota of beans yet. But in keeping with your philosophy, I put up anything I find in the garden or at the fruit stand. Grocery shopping is hit or miss here and with prices so high I just will not pay for certain things. $5 for a small box of cereal!!?? Nope. My experience of living on Guam for 3 years taught me how to do without or substitute. I love your posts about asking and turning a little into a lot. Everything you said is so true. My one wish is to have laying hens...just 3 or 4, but our homeowners association will not allow it at this time. I continue to advocate for a change in this rule especially with the economy the way it is. I will pray for your family's health and again, thank you for all the encouragement and advice.

    1. Dear Marley, Welcome! I am so glad to have you here! You have been through a lot and for sure experience is the best teacher of all. Thank you for your kind words.
You added lots to the pantry this week! I love everything you did with the zucchini. You are doing an enormous amount and I would love if you could have hens. Homeowners associations are not popular with me. I would suggest looking into 1. If Bantams are considered hens. Bantams can be possibly considered pets. 2.. If that doesn't work... Quail. Many people keep quail where hens are not allowed. They make virtually no noise... a larger variety it is probably 3 Quail eggs to one chicken. Close enough. 3. If you have family or friends that could have chickens... to go in with them and have a kind of chicken club. Because with all your gardening you could provide bags of greens each week which would go a long way to feed them. 4. Find someone with chickens and offer your green scraps and do a trade system. Prices are the same here... actually a box of cereal is easily $8 and I saw laundry liquid for $30! I should maybe take some photos and post those. They are unbelievable!
Thank you so much for a wonderful comment. Love Annabel.xxx

  8. Oh poor Lucy! I will pray that she recovers well and her fibromyalgia doesn’t flare up badly 🙏

I’m still recovering myself and as such it is only the basics being done around my home, I haven’t had the energy to get ahead on anything really. I was great full for meals in the freezer and a well stocked pantry but that has dwindled over the past 3 weeks, I will have a lot to catch up on when I recover!

I did find the energy to plant up some spring seeds into punnets, that is something to look forward to!!

  13. I looked for Roots & Refuge on Youtube & she lives in Arkansas! So do I! I loved her intro video & subscribed. I'll enjoy following her. I unsubscribed from quite a few homestead channels recently because they were just too heavy, too much drama & complaining. I hope her videos will be like her intro.

I never do as much as you do but here's a short list of some of the things I did this week.
-I was given 4 pounds of cherry tomatoes & made roasted crockpot tomatoes that will be frozen for sauce, pickled tomatoes to eat in this heat & we're eating much of them fresh.
-I made basil pesto from my garden. I'm happy that my basil is doing so well. I think I'll be able to make quite a bit to put up this year.
-I shaded my vegetable garden & it turned my tomatoes around. We're having over 100'F temps (around 40'C) & I almost just pulled out a few of my plants. I didn't have enough shade cloth so I shaded with old sheets & within a week they all bounced back & are covered with new blooms in spite of the high temps.

I did few more things but I won't drag my comment out any further. :)

When it is extreme heat here I also shade my plants as much as I can. This saves them and makes a lot of difference. Also I use old sheets etc! The place looks like a laundry but it is worth it! You did heaps and were very productive! Many thanks Love Annabel.xxx

  14. Aside from watching the deer in our yard this week (there's one fawn this year and not two as in years' past), I have been watching a solitary quail. I've decided there is a nest in the nearby weedy area as we only ever see one and always in the same space of lawn. I can't wait to see if a family doesn't appear soon.
I've harvested basil, oregano, mint, and chives. I am watching tomatoes slowly recover from the green horned worms that attacked them. I have baby tomato plants that I rooted from suckers off the parent plants. They are potted up and outside to see if they will grow.
I learned this week, just today, that I can plant in my cardboard boxes and plan to set up the current lot as planters in the week ahead and begin planting fall crops in them.
We bought already formed burgers of ground beef for $3 for two pounds picking them up from the reduced price section. I am keeping my eyes peeled for those sections in one major grocery as they are good prices and products at times.
My freezer is packed full. I plan to take this next month to do a full freezer challenge (and pantry using recently or about to expire items) to make our meals. We are planning to purchase a new upright freezer, but I've asked my husband to wait one week. It will be end of September before we can receive it because of slowed production.
I received this week free: peaches, squash, tomatoes, green peppers, okra, cut zinnias and a free glass of ice on a particularly hot day when I stopped at a fast food place to order a drink. I had water and only wanted the ice which was GIVEN to me. That is unheard of here!
I passed peaches, basil and okra to my son and his family.
I prepared a Southern style Banana pudding using a single lonely banana that had gotten quite ripe.
Cooked a pot of chicken stock and culled two cups of chicken meat.
I was pleased to note our electric bill had risen but not terribly high. So far our highest bill this year is $50 less than it was this time last year. We had many temps in the 100f range so this was a great blessing and no doubt was helped by a few minor changes we made.
Prayers for Lucy and family. It is so difficult to be ill and care for children and have to be isolated as well.

  15. Annabel we are praying for Lucy's quick recovery and glad to hear the children are all doing well too :) .

Your baby meal delivery service has so many beautiful meals in it and would be such a relief for a new Mum. Wow at the difference between the sizes of the Bantams versus the baby chicken and they are so cute :) .

I do agree that praying for the things we need works. We prayed that the price of jerry cans would come back down and they did by $6.21 each so we stocked up on all that we needed.

    In the kitchen -
    - Baked 4 loaves of wholemeal white bread in the bread making machine saving $16.94 over buying them locally.
    - Made all meals from scratch.

    In the gardens -
    - Harvested and juiced 3kg of oranges we picked from our navel orange tree.
    - Amended one garden bed with lots of dried mulberry leaves we raked from the yard.

    Finances -
    - Paid an extra part payment off the mortgage.
    - Added extra to our 3 month emergency fund from having spare unspent money in other budget categories.

    Purchases -
    - Saw that fuel jerry cans were on sale at Bunnings reduced from $26.20 ea to $19.99 so we stocked up on all the ones we needed saving $99.36 on usual prices.
    - We were low on Egyptian cotton hand towels and face washers and noticed they were on a clearance sale at Big W the hand towels were reduced from $10 to $2 ea and the face washers reduced from $8 to $2 ea. We naturally stocked up at such low prices and used our 5% off RACQ e-gift card to save $73.49 on usual prices.
    - Put in a click and collect grocery order using our 4% off e-gift card, used $10 rewards,
and picked up some good specials on other items we needed saving $37.55 on usual prices.
    - We also put in another small grocery order using our 4% off e-gift card to save another $1.54 on usual prices.

Hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead :) .

I am amazed at the chickens also! Even amongst the bantams there is one extra small one. Just tiny! But runs around with the rest.
I left my lap top charger in Adelaide. Finally I fired up my old lap top and got it going and figured out!
That is awesome about the jerry cans. I have been buying extra gradually as they are so vital when it comes to fuel and power issues.
The savings with your bread are really adding up. I love to times the weekly savings on something by 52 and see the yearly amount. If people realised the yearly amounts on things they would do many things differently!
Lovely to get fresh organs from your tree! I love citrus in winter it is good timing for extra vitamin C.
Wow on the hand towels and face washers!! What a great time to stock up! Your clever use of cards and rewards save you a lot! Well done on a great and productive week! With love, Annabel.xxx

  16. Praying for your daughter. Health issues are the worst. My greatest score for this week was my hydro electric Bill. For 35 days it was only $15.15. I used only 62kw. I had been asking to be reminded to shut off all unnecessary items. It worked. Usually at this time of year it is around $35-45. It is much cooler here today so cleaned out my fridge freezer and am making some ham bone stock which will be made into ham and navy bean soup. The beans are small white round beans. I also realized I have enough stock to make beet borscht. Mine will be totally vegetarian. We love soups. It will be nice to have come the fall. Jean

The soups will be beautiful! With love Annabel.xxx

  17. I've been praying for Lucy and her family. So sorry to hear of her health issues. Prayers for you as well, Annabel. Thank you for your dedication in inspiring us and in "tending to the ways of your household".
We were blessed by a friend who had too much produce. And my husband was blessed by a co-worker with extra turkey sausage and tuna from her freezer. I continue to make homemade yogurt and granola. It was difficult to do much baking due to the heat. But we had a big rain that cooled things down, yesterday. So my daughter and I baked a huge batch of cookies.
A challenge my family and I ran into is 2 stray cats. We could not keep them and tried to re-home them with friends and neighbors. The shelters in our area are full and not taking any more animals. This caused allot of stress on our part as these were healthy house cats. We didn't want to turn them lose. Thankfully they left. Just something to consider.
    Blessings to you all!

    1. Dear Leslie,
Thank you for your prayers. Lucy has improved a lot!
How wonderful to get the gift of produce. I know you would put everything to good use! Also the sausage and tuna! Big bonuses there!
I know that in hard times a lot of animals get dumped on shelters. Or worse just dumped anywhere. Years ago my Grandparents heard a dog had been left on the highway near by tied to a tree. I was at their house that day and we set off to see and we found a dog that had obviously recently had puppies but there was no sign of them. We brought her home and she became a member of the family. Maybe because of the puppies being taken from her she went on to adopt every kitten Nans cats had. So visitors would see kittens feeding off this dog! I have thought of this lately and because of living on a farm if any animals come our way I can take them. But that is not always possible I know.
I am so glad you had rain and it has cooled! What a relief! With love Annabel.xxx

  18. Hi Annabel, I couldn’t get the google account to work so……This is Rick from St. Petersburg, Florida- the guy whole prints your blog for my ML, Donna, in Indiana. Well, she called to contribute something for your freezer dinners and give aways: Freezer Slaw. She said if you had meal sized portions in your freezer, you could add one to the dinner and by the time the dinner was baked, the slaw would be thawed!

Just enjoy your writing and pictures so very much. Everything shutting down here in continual heat as usual! But I enjoy what I have, namely papaya from seeds last year! Delicious! Do they grow there?
Our grandson has joined the Navy! Leaves this week! Time marches on! He’s an Eagle Scout, so that gives him a leg up!
Hoping Lucy is better and chicks and lambs are thriving!
Thanks for your great lift to my week (and my M/L’s, too!) when your blog appears!!!
    All the Best! Rick

Thank you so much! I hope the heat has died down somewhat. It is very wearing! I left my lap top charger in the city hence my slow reply!
