Feather your Nest Friday, 10th September, 2021.

I am so glad to be here looking back over the week.  It was pretty good!   Spring weather has really kicked in.

Some of the ways I got ahead this week were:

I got back to sewing a few minutes each day.  Just by doing that I completed a skirt for Harper and I am almost finished a dress for Scarlett.

(The above photo... Scout patiently waits for Tom to go home as she wants the toys!   She literally goes crazy over kids stuff!   I caved in and let her have a hideous blue horse with an orange mane.  🙄)

Chloe came by today and I showed her around the garden and animals.   Tom really likes the goats.

Mum gave me three huge jars of honey.  I was glad to add them to the pantry.

I potted up pumpkin seeds to try and get them started.

I made a  Sunflower patch in some really good soil (lots of sheep manure) and we put a little fence around that so the chooks can't get the seedlings when they come up.

My raised garden beds were being nibbled... I think a Deer or a Wallaby.  We added a fence around that as well.   Now to see if it works.

I fertilised and watered all the fruit trees, all my pot plants and lots of my flower beds.

I soaked three kilos of dried fruits in sherry to make some more cakes.

The fruit was all in my pantry stash and I had a lot of eggs this week.   I tripled my Christmas cake recipe which is 15 eggs!

I have been collecting tins to store my cakes in.   A tin is the best way to keep these.  A good year from now they will still be perfect.   Several of the cakes are going to be Christmas gifts.

In the evening I used another 15 eggs and made two big Impossible Pies.  Today I gave one of the pies and one of the fruit cakes to Chloe.  The cake will help with work lunches.

Andy kept on cleaning up with the tractor.   More bon fires.   He came home for lunch today with a big rock in the tractor bucket.   He said it was a nice rock, how did I like it?   So now the garden has another rock.  Scout is overseer...

This end of the garden is not very good as it gets all the heat and the wind.  But you can't kill a rock.

Tonight I went through my seeds.  I had seeds from last summer when a supermarket them away in a promotion.  I potted up all the ones I could use, cherry tomatoes, spinach,  onions, several herbs.

All of this made a nice week.   This is in spite of the fact that Australia has gone mad.   They have a kind of plastic Berlin Wall between two states.   Half of a family is on one side and the other half on the other. People gather at the wall as it is only about waist height so they use it as a kind of picnic table.  But no one goes home with their family.  It is like everyone is hypnotised or out of a movie.

Plans are rolled out and new rules and laws that mean businesses will no longer be able to serve their customers they will have to vet them first for suitability.  They have all been shut down and limited already and now they have to turn away customers of face huge fines.  So they are finished.

I do not recognise my country.  I know we are not alone but we are looking like we are leading the way.
Yet I am ok.   Currently we are not locked down but it could come again any time.  I do get shaken up but I go back to getting on with things.   Then I am ok.

This is the verse I keep going to:
"Though they intend you harm, the schemes they devise will not prevail."

How is life for you?  How did you get ahead,  add to your pantry or garden?  I hope opportunities came your way and you could make the most of them!

Take courage. Be courageous.  Enjoy your weekend. xxx

  1. Hi Annabel! Thanks again for your lovely photos ;). Yes, I agree the world has gone mad. I have empathy for you. I live in Arizona and each state here can control their own lockdown philosophy…we are wide open, with some requirements for masks, we have lots of cases, but few deaths (3,000 cases a day 2-5 deaths). I was reading commentary about the vaccine and a doctor said the correct term for it would be to call it a therapeutic, not a vaccine. A vaccine would prevent someone from getting or transmitting the disease. We both got the vaccine to prevent serious illness. I see now Israel, who has over 80% vaccinated, has their largest number of cases ever, and are giving a third shot and planning a fourth… Crazy talk. I like Arizona’s approach, let everyone either get the vaccine, or get the virus, and we move forward with our freedoms intact. But I know my opinion is in the minority. I thought about deleting my comments here but believe we should be able to discuss this without throwing firebombs at each other.

    1. Dear Traveling Oltmans, Yes I saw Israel also yet our gov doest see. They want the 80% or more even though it did not help Israel. Also I see getting double V we would still be considered unvaccinated when the third, fourth and fifth shots come out.
Your comment is just fine with me. Tyranny and financial ruin also kill, so does loneliness, devastation, depression, isolation they all kill. We have people here dying alone without a hand to hold and we have lost our decency. It is good when someone speaks up for goodness and freedom. Meanwhile we will go on doing our best and making the most of each day. Many thanks! Love Annabel.xxx

    2. Hello Annabel, I admire how you are such a trooper, you always carry on no matter the crisis. You are a wise woman. I love it that Scout likes to play with the kid's toys, how entertaining. I can't get over how big (and cute!) Thomas is. Thank you for your '30 days of prep' series, it's been a good wake-up call for me to continue to prepare--but any more, God only knows for what--it's hard to know what the next loss of freedom will be! I have learned recently about your country's heroine, Monica Smit. She is standing up to the draconian measures currently in place in your country (and is in prison for her actions). And as I have heard..."don't think it can't happen here", (in reference to the U.S.). The video I watched was recorded by her parents who said she can receive mail and that would encourage her so much. The video gave her address as follows: Corrections Victoria GP 0123 Melborne, Australia 3001. I believe we must stand for and support heros all over the world, if we don't, the next 'people' they may come for is us. God bless you Annabel!!

    3. Oh, Trav Oltmans, we were just in Phoenix this a.m. Had to wear masks at the airport in order to fly cuz it's a federal mandate. But I totally agree with you. And it is interesting to note that Israel's rate of those sick with covid are 82% vaccinated🤨Pfizer was the one "approved" and it has the lowest efficacy rate. Like Annabel says, "if it doesn't make sense, something's wrong.". Mary in SD

  2. Tom is adorable! That is just shocking to hear about the wall! Here it is all about the vaccine. Common sense is out the window! Our government needs to realize that those who have had the virus are immune! We are being lied to and numbers are being skewed to get the data they want instead of the truth. But, like you, we are okay.

  3. Hi Annabel, Thank you for taking the time to write and share your knowledge. Your positivity and cheerfulness is inspiring.

It occurred to me while reading your last post - have you ever read the book "Farmer Boy" by Laura Ingalls Wilder? It's wonderful! It's one year on her husband's farm when he was growing up as a boy. It's a children's story but really it's a housekeeping and homesteading manual. The recipes, traditions, ways they did things from planting potatoes to making butter. You'd love it if you haven't read it. The author's main series "Little House on the Prairie" is considered a classic but many haven't read "Farmer Boy" which is a gem.

    Have a great weekend!

We're visiting Oklahoma this week. Heading back home tomorrow, yay :)
Unbelievable what they're doing down there in Australia; or anywhere for that matter. Yes, we must keep our eyes on Jesus rather than the nonsense that's going on right now. Governments come and governments go (fall), but He stays the same....and takes care of His own.
So far 18 states in the US have filed lawsuits against our "president's" mandate that all businesses w/over 100 employees must be vaccinated, or submit to weekly testing.

I am so sorry to hear the news about the wall between states. I thought walls and stopping freedom of movement was a bad thing? Well, I seem to remember it was when President Trump was in office :) But it's all upside down these days. Hard to keep up and common sense is not so common these days. We are not far behind you in the madness.I went to a coffee shop recently and the 'rules' now are :wear a mask in retail shops but you don't have to in places you eat & drink. So we mask up to go into the retail area, then we can take our mask off to get drinks and food. Then mask up to leave coffee area. All one building. We had a plastic screen on *one* side of our table. Same when you check out- they have a plastic screen in front of the cashier but empty space to the side and they touch the items as they pass them through but encourage you to use contactless payment because..... it's all 'science'. It's past time now that people began to shout "The Emperor has no clothes".
On a lighter note, we are seeing Autumn/Fall signs and it is beautiful. God is good. Keep looking up!
Have a wonderful weekend and much love to you and your beautiful family.

Many of our friends are ready to walk away from careers and jobs they have invested their whole lives in.

And my daughter's cross-country running team was stunned to see her family picking apples from the tree near the school parking lot! When asked why, my daughter responded, "the apples are edible and no one else is picking them."

That is awesome that you and your kids are foraging apples. There are so many good things to make with apples and I'm sure the kind gentlemen are going to be thrilled to receive your pies. It truly is a wonderful thing to forage because you are not letting good fruit go to waste and it adds to the pantry for free which is great for the grocery budget. I hope you've been able to get a lot of apples. Good job!

  8. Things are crazy here also. In the USA our president is mandating all federal employees and contractors that do work for the federal government be vaccinated. I am vaccinated ( because that was the best course of action due to age and health) but I know that requirement isn't going to go over well with a lot of people. Our Covid 19 numbers keep rising and I anticipate to get worse as we go into winter. We are experiencing shortages here and rumors are rampant this will get worse. Glad I am frugal, have stocked up and live in the country. This is nothing like the world I grew up in !! Oh for the good ole days! Ha Ha!

  9. I just am amazed at what's happening in your country...it feels so unreal but it IS real. Incomprehensible!

I'm sure you've heard about Pres. Biden's declaration that businesses of more than 100 employees must require vaccination or weekly testing. That was yesterday. Today, a local county judge...from a very liberal county with a large population....sent out a letter saying that none of the county employees would be asked to prove they've been vaccinated or tested to come to work. So that does give me hope if the liberal leaders are fighting against the ridiculous ideas. I just hope the world can eventually come to reason without severely harming people anymore than they've already been hurt.

  13. Wow Annabel, you have had a hugely busy week. Not only on the farm but writing everyday for the preparedness challenge. I got a lot done but feel lazy by comparison.
This past week my parents arrived in their caravan for a few days. The caravan was in quite a state of disrepair. They had driven 300kms without tail lights or indicators. The pipes from the water tanks into the caravan had perished and the caravan was covered in mould both on the outside and the inside. Bluey attended to the electrics and the water pipes. I scrubbed down the exterior of the van one day and the interior over a couple of days. My parents had said they only planned on staying a couple of days and this turned into a week. They had a wonderful stay and Bluey and I were exhausted when we waved them goodbye.
My son is leaving the Airforce and moving to our hometown. Until they find a house they will be living with us. We only have a small home but Bluey and I are cleaning everything out of the spare room and the sewing room to make the rooms theirs whilst they are here. The spare room was not difficult to clean out at all. The sewing room is proving more of a challenge. However to be able to give the little girls their own space is will be so rewarding. I continue. I have until mid November before they will be arriving.
I made the little girls a little summer dress each this week. I have been getting the embroidery machine all fired up. So far I have a number of tea towels embroidered and am close to finishing off another two Christmas gifts. I have also added a little embroidery to some little facecloths for the little girls to use. An old fashioned romper has been cut out for Spencer. I am hoping to get that made today.
I think the 30 days to being better repaired series is a really good one. You have reminded me that it is nearly storm season and I have been through my emergency box. I have changed out a few items and added a few more. I have also been making a list of things I might need for the little girls in the case of using the emergency box/
I hope everyone enjoys there week. Life is exhausting but good.

  14. I love all of your pictures, but the one of Scout with Tom's toys is absolutely priceless.

I am so thankful for your preparedness series. I've always been pretty good with this stuff, but you have taught me so much and given me even more to think about. I'm happy to report that our portable tri-fuel generator is being set up as I write. Our friend was able to connect it directly to the natural gas supply line of the furnace. We will be able to turn on the generator and the furnace fan with just a flick of a switch. The generator will be stored right next to the furnace and freezer, and there are outlets for several cords. I can't even begin to tell you how good this makes me feel...and I sincerely hope we never need it!

I'm very disappointed in this week's (lack of) grocery specials. This includes a case lot sale that's likely the only one we will have in this area. The selection is very, very sparse...no canned fruit. The Labor Day specials weren't great, either, and it is usually one of the best grocery weeks of the year.

I harvested and canned a few more pints of tomatoes.

I read two books from the library. I saw a book review on TV and immediately went online and reserved the book at the library. DH wondered why I didn't just buy it. "Why would I pay for a book when I can get it for free?"

But I DID buy a book--a new first aid reference for dogs and cats. It is a lot more detailed than what I have. I ordered a used copy in very good condition from bookfinder dot com for $4.51 including postage. I was so pleased with myself that I ordered another copy for my son and daughter-in-law.

I made rags with an old cotton mesh polo shirt.

Annabel, I'm sorry that things are so difficult in Australia right now. I'm not going to criticize because I'm not there and it's not my place. Things are very difficult in the US right now, and not just because of Covid. I think doing what we can as individuals is the best thing any of us can do right now.

  15. Annabel, you are such a calm voice of reason in this crazy world and I am grateful!
I canned up 11 pints of sweet pickle relish, 8 pints of corn relish, 5 quarts of diced tomatoes, 4 quarts of tomato juice, 10 pints of cranberry applesauce and 7 pints of spiced applesauce. I still have about 2 bushels of apples to preserve, along with several cucumbers and zucchini. My husband thinks I’m nuts but I just can’t pass it up when neighbors offer free produce! If/when I get this food caught up, I have my eye on 2more apple trees that the fruit is just falling on the ground with nothing being done to preserve it. I love seeing how you make use of all the opportunities that come your way. That’s what I am trying to do as well. I’ve already given away several jars of food and plan to do more as I see a need or desire. Keep doing the things to be ready for whatever comes next!

  16. Thankyou so much Annabel for the blog and preparedness series. So many things I wouldn’t have even thought of that are so useful.
I live in Sydney and it just makes me sick that my children are currently not able to go to school or leave our house except for a walk and one of my children will have to wear a mask when they start highschool next year, because masks have already been made mandatory in highschool even though children usually only have mild symptoms with covid. How are they supposed to interact and make friends? It breaks my heart. I just keep thinking how my grandfather fought front line on the kokoda track in ww2 so Australia could be free and we are now not free. There is zero discussion of the coasts of lockdown versus the benefits. There are so many costs to so many people. This needs to be weighed against what benefit the lockdown is actually achieving
I have had first dose of the vaccine. I personally don’t think I needed it and didn’t want it but felt blackmailed into getting it because the government is saying you will basically be excluded from society if you don’t get it. I am not anti vax but feel that each individual should have a choice. If someone wants to protect themselves with the vaccine then they can. Then they don’t have to worry if other people are vaxed or not because they have vaxed themselves. Unfortunately I have had a headache for 2 weeks after getting it so it has not been a good experience and I feel my risks from covid and risks from vaccine are roughly the same with my age and health
Sadly the virus is not going away no matter what we do so we need to get back to normal life and protect the elderly and vulnerable. I fear we will never get back some of the freedoms we have now lost.
You have beautiful grand children. Scout is absolutely the cutest good girl. More photos of her please. Brings a smile to my face

    1. I really feel your worry over the children. I only have to wear a mask in a shop and half an hour of it is exhausting for me. It is difficult. So all day would be very hard.
I also am not anti vax. The girls were vaccinated and we all had most of them but I have never had coercion, bullying and threats in association with any of them. Until now. These things do not sit well.
I also agree freedoms lost are hard to get back. But dont be discouraged. Hang in there day by day and make things as good as you can. Also think of taking care of yourself as well as the family.
Thank you so much and yes ok more photos coming! With much love Annabel.xxx

  17. Dear Annabel, Oh that photo of Scout - classic, it made me smile straight away. And little Tom is gorgeous. Your achievements this week are amazing. My daughter turned 15 today. We had a slight lifting of restrictions which means she was able to have an outside picnic with three friends by the river. She loved it. She has been spoiled/loved from sunup to sundown. Family had posted parcels and cards (which I hid until this morning) and she received many phone calls. She is exhausted now and tucked away in bed. NSW regional restrictions also changed which means she will attend school next week for one week before school holidays - but will have to wear a mask all day, I am not sure how she will go with this. This week I managed to juice more lemons. I also started cutting (using scissors) our little crop of wheat I planted in half of my chook pen. The "girls" love it - they eat it up like green spaghetti. My husband told me that if I keep doing this it will keep growing, making it last longer than it would if I just let them in there. I have much to be grateful for today. Yesterday a car suddenly turned in front of my husband's ute and it took all his strength no to roll it. He was quite shaken up. Then this morning we learned that my nephew, his wife and baby boy born in October last year did roll their ute which landed on it's roof. Thank God they were all OK. Yesterday could have been the worst day of my life. Thankyou for the verse you shared and the encouragement to keep going. Thankyou to everyone who comments as well, I find inspiration there too. Love Clare

The wheat is great! I also have taken to cutting gras with scissors. I pull it up if I can but if that becomes hard I make a basket of greens by harvesting with scissors. As you say they love it. I hope it does keep growing for you!
I am so glad no one was hurt in either ute accident! I hope M manages with the mask. I am not good in a mask for a long time. I have to dip it down below my nose for a bit to get enough oxygen. So a whole day would be difficult. If they can go outside in the open air during breaks and breathe normally that would help.
Lovely week Clare! With love Annabel.xxx

  18. Numbers in our state continue to rise. Many people report that they have loved ones in hospital. Some of those who are sick have already had C19 or have had the vaccine! And though I seldom say anything about the political status of our country whether or not I voted for or against someone, if our president and his vice president are incompetent will someone else besides me finally ask the $1,000,000 question: WHO is running this country?! For that matter, WHO is running any country these days? I'm absolutely appalled that no one seems to follow through on the thought that someone is running things and if not those elected...????

I'm not going into debt nor am I so far off budget that we'll sink but have food, but I am making gathering what I can a priority NOW.
As well I am determined to use all the food that comes into my household and make it stretch and trying to determine what needs to be done NEXT.
I won't do a long post here of my frugal escapades or thoughts since I do that on my own blog but I am so appreciative for the time you take to make the posts you're making and for all of those who take time to comment and share in order to help others.
HUGS to everyone! Long distance hugs naturally but consider it a safe hug, lol

    1. Dear Terri,
You asked the Billion dollar question. I am starting to have a theory and whoever it is also runs Australia. We will soon know I feel. I am over reading your blog now. Keep doing what you are... Many thanks, With love Annabel.xxx

  19. Terri, I don't want to start something on Annabel's blog, but I'd like to discuss the WHO question (I think I know) with you. You mention your blog--what is it called? I searched for you, but you are not the only Terri Cheney with a blog!

  20. I love the photo of Scout. And Tom is adorable.
Just today I was able to arrange to buy a gently used Instant Pot (I already have one & love it) tomorrow for 1/4 of the usual price of new. I'm so excited! :)
I will be picking apples at a friend's house and be making more applesauce. I will be picking crabapples from my own tree and making jelly. I'm looking for tomatoes to make chili base and salsa.
I canned 10 pints of pasta sauce for DS2's family. And gifted him some jars of salsa, jelly from my pantry.
One of my 9 grandchildren texted me her Christmas list so I will start looking for bargains.
I cleaned out my purse and added phone numbers to my computer from my phone. I will print off my contacts list from the computer and email it also to my son out of state along with my passwords. He also has our safe combination and our banking accounts information.
Finding my fragments this weekend, we used up 1/4 of a pound of ground beef in quesadillas last night. We are using up leftover veg tonight with our anniversary dinner (made at home) of steak, baked potatoes and rolls. (the rolls were a reduced price and stored in the freezer for a week or two.)
I am still looking for a pressure canner so I can clear out some of the bone broth from my freezer and can up some beef and chicken.
Farmer and my boss (and I to a lesser degree) came down with something virus related. It was more stomach related and a tiredness with body aches. Cv? Who knows. I used a protocol I found from Deep Roots at Home and we are both back to normal. It took about 2 weeks of feeling poorly but not dreadfully ill. I am so glad I followed God's prompting to gather what I needed so I was prepared. The only thing I had to do was make elderberry syrup. I would strongly urge the Bluebirds to do that now as well. Ask God. He will show you what you need.
I ask Him for discernment and wisdom in these confusing times. He answers.
    Praying for you all.
