Feather your Nest Friday, 13th August, 2021.

This week I kept one eye on the mind boggling things going on and the rest of me busy working away.   I made one trip where I left the farm and it was a kind of reality check.  Our towns shops are open now but you must wear a mask everywhere.  I did my shopping and errands and was very glad to get home and stay here.

I have been working through the box of fruit and veggies I was given last week.  It has been beautiful!  Today I used some pears up in a crumble.  It contained one apple and six pears.  Delicious!  So this will re appear a couple of times over the weekend.

We had a lovely mix of rain and sunny days.  This is really making the grass grow.  Now our lawn seems to go on forever out into the paddocks.  It looks beautiful.

Some of the ways I build up the home, got ahead and put things to good use were:

I covered some more boxes with pictures to create storage for all kinds of odds and ends in the craft/sewing room.

I have written on the side of each one.  I have "Cellophane Bags,"  "Christmas Cards,"  "Glitter,"  "Needles," and about another hundred categories.   Order from chaos!

I began to load up my extra little shelves.  In the process I found things I had forgotten about including some potential gifts.   Now I also know what I have and how much.   I think I have every kind of needle... upholstery, leather, embroidery, darning...   these have all come from thrift stores.   I can fix anything!

Another box is dedicated to mending.   Iron on patches and invisible tape and so on...
Tomorrow I think I will be finished and I can go back to actually making stuff!

I partially cooked the corn I was given then vac sealed and froze it.  Happy to add to the freezer.

I juiced about thirty lemons and froze the juice in bottles.  The lemons then went into each dishwasher load to make my dishwasher clean and smell good.

I made a gluten free cake and gave Mum half.

Chloe and Thomas are better now but early in the week I made some meals as they were both still unwell.
I have a bunch of meals that I make as I think they re heat well.  This was one of the deliveries..

Annabel's take out delivery service!

One day I did a big roast meal.  I cooked double the veggies and plated up a full roast meat, gravy and veggies for another night as well.   I love a night off.   There was still a heap of roast meat.  The next day I made up rolls for lunch and then as many rolls as I could make up with the remaining meat.

Into the freezer they went.  I can't tell you how handy these are.

We only have two weeks of winter left.  So we got busy and lit some bonfires.  I save all boxes and paper rubbish as my fire lighters.   We lit up quite a few and each area looks better for it.

I had a major repurposing/putting things to good use job completed.   This little shed was over a pump that is not used and hasn't been since we lived here.  I only just realised the shed and the pump could both be repurposed.  The pump can be fixed up for a spare.  The little shed we moved to become a shelter for the sheep. We placed it down the bottom of a hill next to their water trough.

I added hay for extra comfort!   The nosey teenagers did not take long to come for a look.

We have water laying across the low lying paddocks and nearby swans have moved in.

You know it's wet when you pass turtles on the road.

I made an investment.  The biggest investment I have ever made.  I bought a tractor.   There are many things we cannot do without one.   Every single day would be easier with a tractor.    On Monday I walked into a place in the town and asked what they had.  They told me about a lot of tractors and how they order them and mostly they come from the US.  I said no I only want a tractor if you have one, here, on the ground in South Australia.   The man was perplexed but he said ok and he showed me one right there and it looked ok to me.   I explained to him I could order a tractor today and in six months or a year still not have it and we need it.   I said I want one while there is still one to get.   I think he might have thought I am kooky.
So... this afternoon he rang me up.  We made a deal.  I said how fast can you get it here?
Then he told me that since we talked on Monday his tractor dealer let him know the orders he placed and expected to arrive in January are not coming.   So now he doesn't think I am so kooky.
I added that yesterday shipping containers hit the all time highest price in history.   Now he is concerned but my tractor is on the ground and nearby.   I knew I was needing to do this and it looks like I was just in time.   A bird in the hand!

I was thinking how much we need every skill we can learn.  If you have someone who can teach you skills like preserving or mending (or any useful thing) then take advantage of the opportunity.  It is humbling to learn something new and be not good at it at first.    But as we learn and get better it is fantastic!  Often we might be the student in one thing and the teacher in another.   The key is to want to learn.  To have a teachable heart.  When you want to learn something you can learn it fast.   Take every opportunity to learn and to add to your pantry!

How was your week?  How are things in your area?  We are from all around the world and knowing the situation elsewhere helps us to plan.xxx

  2. Hi Annabel,
Smart thinking regarding the tractor. I thought the same about a house pump that was nearly due for replacement, it got done two weeks ago. All my sources are saying by the end of the year a lot of big businesses will be left exposed by the corruption and the share market is insane. How can an economy be healthy in these crazy times? It goes back to my comment a few weeks ago about 'control the mind' but then turn that around and it's the same as 'mind control'. We are being played and it's our place to be a beacon of common sense and love to those lost in the game. Good onto all you share and your readers who can be those beacons in tough times. I believe God has already won but we must see the bad actors and their deeds before we can move them off stage

    1. Thank you for sharing your info. I had an opportunity to speak with someone high up in a bank and he said the stock market being so high is just crazy... it Maes NO SENSE at all. Yes crazy times. When things make no sense they are not true. Something is amiss.
We must try and go on very wisely but with courage for sure. Also we must encourage each other as this is really dreadful for those that cannot see hope. As you say we see hope as we know how it turns out in the end! xxx

  3. I was picking up a part from our tractor dealer and noticed they had 8 tractors on the lot i stead of the usual 100s they have. I asked about it and was told they cannot get them as there are no raw materials OR tractors! They have 250 PAID FOR tractors on order and have no idea when they are coming! I worry about getting parts if we have a breakdown. You were wise to get on the list!

  4. How interesting that they get them from US....sure, we make them here, but with parts from out of country. We are missing several things we need to repair tractors now, including having a hard time getting needed lubricants. Purchase fuels you might need like this for back up.

  5. Greetings Annabelle from Tennessee USA! I first want to say how much I enjoy your blog, all the animals and the skills you have and share. The world is such a "smaller" place now that we have blogs to read about how each of us is faring in the world today. And of course I am such a fan of your part of the world which I really didn't know much about until I watched McCleod's Daughters!! :) That is one of my all time favorite shows and sometimes when I'm feeling stressed I watch a few hours of it! The country is so gorgeous and I imagine that your farm is just like it! Your blog brings me back to it every week!

I look forward to it every week and have wanted to ask this question for such a long time! Now that you are canning and putting away food maybe it won't be too much of a bother to ask you to tell/show me! Long ago I read a post you wrote along with photos of some jellies and jams that you were putting away. I was particularly fascinated with the way you do them without lids! Or at least it appeared that way. Now that there is such a shortage of canning supplies I would really love to know how you do this!!

    1. Hi! Thank you so much! Ok first of all my husband grew up in the town McLeods daughters was filmed in! That is where we met! I watched that too then couldn't take it any more when Clair was killed! Seriously.
If you reply let me know your name.
Ok well it turns out that different parts of the world do things differently. I grew up with Nana preserving a lot and both my Nans put things in the local shows and won prizes. So it was just normal that pickles, relishes and jams were not canned. They did cover jams often with parfait wax to make a seal. However we never have. In more humid parts of Australia though they have more mould issues so it might be different. But I use jam tops which are just cellophane to cover jams. The jars are washed and sterilised. I have never had any problem with it. Yes with the canning jar shortage we have to do what we can anyway and I think dehydrating is a very good option.
A difference I notice is many times I see US recipes for jams and jellies have purchased pectin. I dont do that and have never ... pectin occurs naturally in fruit and your fruit reaches set point itself. However some fruits could do with a bit extra pectin so I add the juice of half a lemon. There is no need to buy pectin and the steady boil is making your jam ready to last years on the shelf. Let me know if I can explain further. OH I also do my small batches in the microwave as its much faster and the colour is better.xxx

    2. Annabel, you are right that things are done differently in different countries, and I think that is all good! I have never seen the cellophane covers sold in the US, but I love the idea (I'm the one who reuses canning lids, LOL). We always sealed jam with paraffin in the 1950s, but we also used pectin. Some of the reasons many of us use pectin is that it produces a fresher-tasting jam, plus you get a greater yield. It's also a necessary ingredient in freezer jam, which many of us prefer and make. There probably isn't a saving when you factor in the cost of the pectin, but it has never been marketed that way. I use Sure Jell in the pink package which allows you to make jam with less sugar.

      Delete
    3. I wondered about the lack of pectin and am glad to get an understanding of this myself. I use paraffin to top my jams, so I don't have to hot water bath can. Most people in the states do a hot water bath and use canning lids but this way I can utilize any jar. I've had only ONE in twenty years get mold and that was because a bit of liquid jam had gotten on top of the paraffin.

      Delete
    4. Terri I save the jars like the pasta sauce ones and others as they have a tiny amount of rubber in the lid and re seal perfectly.

      Delete
    5. Terri, we always washed the paraffin after opening the jar and saved it to re-melt and use the following year. I bet you do this, too! If you pour boiling hot jam into a hot, sterilized jar and cap it with a lid (including reused), it should seal without a water bath. This is called open kettle canning and was still pretty popular when I started canning 50 years ago. The heat of the jar creates a vacuum as it cools and causes the lid to seal. I am pretty sure the USDA no longer recommends this, but I do it with cooked jams and applesauce with no issues. The lids pop. If a jar didn't seal, you can always run it through a boiling water bath.

  6. Hi, hello from the desert southwest of the US. Glad to see the teenagers enjoying the new shed ;). A few of the frugal sites I visit, with people I respect tremendously, like you, continue to suggest learning new skills and making sure pantries are stocked up. I decided a few days ago to spend the next 40 days doing something every day towards being better prepared, yesterday was day three. So far, I reviewed pantry holes in first aid supplies, dog supplies, light bulbs and batteries (and ordered any missing items). Those were the first items. I feel so good knowing I have a plan to really assess and attend to any gaps. I feel very uneasy about the future…not sure if it the blog sites that clued me into the anxiety or something I would have felt regardless, but there is no downside to be prepared! As Brandy at the Prudent Homemaker said, with inflation, the prices of things today are much less than they will be in a year, where else can you save 10%?

  7. Hi Annabel and everyone,

Annabel, that is amazing about the tractor! Well done! I love the beautiful rose photos on your boxes for storage. They are so pretty - I should do that. The lambs are adorable as always, and I am so happy to hear that Chloe and Thomas are doing better. Your cooking looks wonderful as always.

I was feeling the urge to "get ready" this week, so I did a big pantry stock-up (not more than we will use in time, or that will spoil before it can be used, but enough to get us through if we have another season like last spring.) Refilling things we used when my husband had his dental adventure (thank you for the wishes, he is doing a lot better now and happy to have "real" food!), extra dry goods and canned goods, food for the cats, some special ingredients for holiday baking, and nice soap (for me and for gifts). A gift card was used to purchase some extra horse treats - I feel silly adding that to the "pantry," but they both love this brand and I would rather use the fruits and veggies for human consumption. This week I also spent a little money on a certification for work; it's always good to invest in yourself and I learned some things!

There is stuff in the stores here, but not all of the brands you might expect or just a few of certain items (turkeys were all sold out). It might just be problems with transporting things here. This part of the country is doing very badly with COVID right now. Really high numbers and the hospitals are filling up, if not already full. Gas prices are rising, but no problems with supply. Some issues with craft and mending supplies (some flosses and fabrics are hard to get), but there is usually something available in a pinch and I always have a good stock of those. It took 4 months for a new laptop to reach me at my work; if anyone needs something that requires chips or thinks they will need one in the next 6 months or so, it might be a good idea to put in an order early.

Last weekend we did a movie date at home - these are so fun - and picked raspberries and 1 cucumber from the garden. Tomato hornworms got some of the tomatoes, but there is another batch of green ones coming up that look ok. I did a big cooking session on the weekend (bread, waffles, spaghetti sauce, roasted potatoes & zucchini & chicken) and my husband did a minor car repair (which saved a lot!). All work lunches & snacks were brought from home. For crafting, I added the beads to a big cross-stitch piece and started the backstitching - this is my work lunch project - and did a little gift knitting.

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

I am glad your husband is so much better. He will be enjoying food so much!
Your big cook up was wonderful. During the week you must benefit from all of this so much.
There is a big shortage of semi conductors. This is going to affect a lot of things. Seriously I will feel so much better when this tractor is delivered and on the farm. Now to think what else should we make sure we have in hand now? Being Sunday I am trying to think and plan and consider this! With much love Annabel.xxx

It is also good to have people in your circle who you know you could ask for advice, possibly do trades and help each other generally. You might look at NSW Sydney news and tell your husband we are seeing things that look like a war. People were given an hour and a half to be ready for lockdown... 9. You are so smart! Manufacturers cannot make cars and so many other things because of a shortage of materials. A family member who is an engineer for a car manufacturer said they usually have 60 days worth of inventory on all the car lots and now it is 8-10 days. Here all anyone talks about is the vaccine. It is driving me nuts! Everyone has a right to choose their own healthcare and decide what is best for their body. Period! I am so sick of the posts on Facebook belittling people. Mask wearing is coming back but we are not going to go back to that. My husband's brain injury just cannot do it again and I will support him by doing the same. Every time we go out to a store I pray and ask God to show me what to get and what we will need and not be able to get. I had planned to get 25 pounds of bread flour but when we got to the store I felt strongly that I needed to get 50. I was thankful for that guidance.

    Have a good weekend!

  10. We had a few annual bills due and searched around for better deals. In the end we stuck with the companies we know and trust and just saved money by haggling with them, something I really hate doing! We also fixed our energy prices for 2 years as a big price hike has just been announced in the UK and we wanted to make sure we were getting the best price possible quickly, before it kicks in. I ventured into some charity shops for the first time in a year and my reading pile has grown rather impressively! After I have read them I will pass them on to my neighbour, who gives me books in return. I have also added to my pantry stores and prolonged the life of some clothes by mending. I find it very satisfying to do that, especially if it is an old favourite - no throw-away fashion in this house.

  11. Love the idea of covering boxes with pretty paper of some kind!!!!!! Thank you for reminding me, of this!

You are allowed to burn rubbish?!?!?! I would never think this, with all the fires which Australia has. Even if it is not the dry season. How do they keep people from doing this, in the dry season, if you can do it now?

When we were first married (years ago), we could have a burn barrel. Not in years and years. Here in the US. Long before all the *Woke-Green* people were around, too!

You and the Tractor! Brilliant, my Dear!!!!

And wonderful food prep, of course.

Here in the US, we are being led by totally bizarre people! On each and every front.

Example... Canadians can not cross the border, into the US. But on our southern border, this Administration is allowing illegals to pour in, bring COVID.

2nd Example.... Our President stopped our oil production, to show his *Being Green.* Now he is asking OPEC to increase oil production, so we can import it, thus making more emissions into the atmosphere, with the transportation of the oil, to us.

Do you see the totally illogical way, the US is being run????????????

As to freezing a lot of food, I worry about power outages. We can always lose power, from T-storms, or Ice storms. And now, with not having the *Green* energy sufficient, yet... And cutting back of fossil fuel... Our state of Texas showed how areas can lose *Green power Supply*... And thus, lose all our appliances, which run on electricity. And the food stored, in our freezers.

    -sigh-

    Have you considered this...?

    Courage!!!!!

    1. You have some very good questions so I will explain. Because fires are such a serious issue the job of cleaning up dead and fallen wood etc in the winter and early spring is taken very seriously. We clean up and burn like crazy as once it is later Spring the opportunity is lost until next winter. So at this time it is like our last chance to minimise fire risk around the homestead. We are all encouraged to be responsible for cleaning up around our homes.
So the freezers... we had a generator and learned if the power goes out we needed to hook it up to each freezer for a couple of hours a day to keep them solid. Now we also have a whole house generator so if the power goes out that kicks in. So we have back up to the back up. We store enough fuel to run this way for a month or more.
We have the same thing in our state... we had a famous whole state blackout due to the fact they knocked down the power stations and wanted us to go wind and solar. Dont get me started...
I am following your situation with huge interest. Bizarre is the word. When things make no sense I believe there is more to it. We will see!
I hope this answers some of the things you were wondering. With love Annabel.xxx

  12. Dear Annabel,

I hope that Chloe and Thomas are feeling much better. You are such a great mum!

Every day I think "Things cannot get any worse", and yet, they do. We just had another big event happen here in Canada, and I pray for God's mercy. I am just about at my wit's end. The agendas and actions that are being pushed with Covid for an excuse are absolutely mind-boggling, and there is absolutely no recourse, as you simply are quashed from the get-go for failure to agree with the media/angry "Twitter mobs"/every armchair "health expert". I know that God's everlasting arms are there, underneath us, but I am like Cath last week...some days you just get so low you practically have to be scraped off the floor. Keeping busy is a good idea, and we have lots of apples to process, so am off to do that.

  13. Annabel,
You were indeed wise to get that tractor when you could. We knew within the next year we would need to replace our toliet so instead of waiting, we purchased it now while we could. My daughter needed to replace her back door and she was able to purchase a new door now so even though it wasn't the best time for her budget, she went ahead while she could get it. Remodeling/repairing supplies are very difficult to get here. Paint is even in very short supply. Shelves are still very empty here. Things are getting crazier by the day with more and more mandates being issued by President, Governors, Superintendents of Schools and individual companies. I find it hard to keep up with all the new mandates. I needed a break from all the doom and gloom so next week my mom, sisters and myself with our daughters are all going for a nice lunch on the coast. That should refresh and energize us for the tough days ahead.
My husband, son and SIL went ocean fishing so now we have some salmon in the freezer which makes me feel good. We cooked a small portion to eat fresh which we shared with family. I have a bit left over so I plan to make a salmon dip out of that.
I think now more than ever it is so important to me to have this blog community as we encourage each other in the days ahead.

  15. I am actively looking for a replacement washer as ours is starting to leak a little bit but not all the time. Only a matter of time. We had a friend who used to repair washers repair ours over a year ago and so we have gotten a bit more out of it but now it is time to look for another. My challenge is I want a basic one that has an agitator and hopefully will last a long time because the parts aren't all plastic. Our washer is going on 14 years so I could only hope to get one that good or better. Take care.

    1. You want a Speed Queen. We went through 2 washers that only lasted 5 years and had problems from year one. We asked our appliance repairman what to get and that was his recommendation. It will be five years old in October and it has been trouble free. They are expected to last 25 years. It does have a less water eco setting but otherwise it is just your basic washer. It cleans super well.

  16. Some great accomplishments this week Annabel! I just assumed you already had a tractor, now I’m even more impressed with everything you have done since moving to the farm! What a great investment, I’m so pleased you managed to get one. Your craft organisation looks amazing! I need to go through my stuff, it’s a bit of a disaster zone.

I’ve been wondering about this for a while Annabel, I know you have stocked up on your craft supplies whenever you see good buys, do you ever feel overwhelmed by it? I also have lots of craft supplies, wool, fabric, cross stitch etc and I do craft almost every day. But I have been guilty of buying things with no real plan for them and sometimes I feel like ‘stocking up’ was just my excuse for buying something I didn’t really need! Maybe organising everything will inspire me to make use of some of those impulse buys?!

I’m so pleased Chloe and Thomas are better, it must have been such a help to have lovely meals dropped off and not have to worry about cooking. Are you able to visit Lucy’s family at the moment or are there restrictions with them being in a different area? It’s such a challenging time for so many still.

I hope you have a good weekend!

    1. Dear Jen,
A couple of times my nephew and also son in law helped us with a tractor. It was amazing! Well finally we will have one!
Jen as I went through my crafts I think of what you are saying. I dont keep fabrics I dont like and projects I think I will never do and dont like much. I do keep everything that I think I could make into gifts, things for the kids and useful things. I think if shortages were to continue the ability to make clothes, mend things, make gifts... would be so valuable.
If you need to reduce I would think of what you have that could make great gifts... also if you have kids to give to and your kids probably get invited to parties (like constantly!). then making up little craft kits is a great gift. This could save you money you could use elsewhere. Another one I did was get ready kits for school holidays and the girls would make resents for teachers and friends. It kind of was a win win! So look at some impulse buys as possible gifts.
Lucy and family have a border zone situation, it varies but I think it is something like 60 ks bubble. This makes life easier as the first lockdowns it was impossible to even more around the farm!
I finally did conquer the craft room and it was such a big job. Jen I dont have young kids to take care of! I hope I gave you some ideas. With love Annabel.xxx

  17. Dear Annabel and bluebird friends,
Well done on buying the tractor Amnabel, it’s a wis investment for the farm .
Your cooking and baking looks delicious Annabel and you were fortunate to get the produce box .
I have had a quiet week but I did go out twice this week , I went out for about an hour on Wednesday with my care worker and I got some bargains !. I am a member of the Woolworths bunch club and I had 3 products to collect for free . I got a pack of 5 chicken kebabs worth $6 for free as well as a pack of chocolate brownies from the bakery at Woolworths also worth $6 for free and finally a bag of licoriceallsorts worth $2 for free . I also got a free cup of tea when we had lunch because the bakery we went to had a promotion where you got a free hot drink if you spent over $5 . The hot drinks are worth about $5 so that was a good deal I hint.
Also last weekend a lady posted on our local community Facebook page that she had homemade meals to give away , I responded to the post and she delivered me a huge bag of meals and some soup and two pieces of cake and she even gave me a card. I have bought her a box of chocolates as a thank you .
I bought a new handbag on Thursday , it was on sale ( 20 percent off) and I also had a email to say I could get $10 off as well . So I saved $20 off the handbag . I have put $20 into my savings plus another $20 went into my slush fund as a booster because I have saved by getting free meals .
Otherwise I haven’t done much else Annabel.
I hope everyone has a good weekend.
    Love Barb W.

  18. Dear Annabel and beautiful Bluebirds!!

I love and appreciate your post, Annabel!! .... The way that you decorated your boxes is beautiful, and a lovely reminder!! .......... This week, Dad and I were fencing old stable yards for sheltering my sheep!

Having our eyes open and acting accordingly are so important!! Having the Almighty’s life flowing through us in our work (especially in praying for, and helping, those around us) is a joyful perspective! At least it is becoming more evident that there is only One whom we can truly trust ..... and isn’t that what life is all about?!

During the week, I found that my some of my paid work is becoming more political. During one particular day, I felt the burden of this ...... and by that evening, when two offers for private work came in, I knew to accept them! Again, yesterday, more private work was offered, and I took interest! I am receiving more private work out in rural areas, where people need help!! .... It is so important to keep diversification in work, if we have it, and to keep developing what I call ‘new egg baskets’!

I am enjoying warmer weather, as the springtime blossoms begin to cover the trees!

I was encouraged to read, “The LORD is with you, while you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, .....” — 2 Chronicles 15:2

    The LORD reigns!

  19. A busy week! Glad for the rain. We have had rain forecast every day and it hasn't happened. My rain barrels are empty and it's coming into garden watering time. I'm praying every day for just enough to keep the gardens going, I think this year, more than ever before, they will be vital to how well we eat. I understand about the tractor. I was the same way with my car. We hadn't thought to update my car, and one day I was just sitting and it hit me that I needed to update my car. When we went to look there were none of what would do what we wanted in Australia, but if I could wait 6 weeks, I could get the new model at the old model price. It was a deal on condition that delivery was 6 weeks from that day. I prayed and prayed, and didn't hear anything and was thinking it wasn't going to happen, and then a phone call 3 days before the 6 weeks were up let me know the car was ready and waiting. Now it's almost 2 year wait to get the same - the new models will be out before the current model is delivered! When God gives me a push, I keep moving forward, I've learned not to dig my heels in and be stubborn. This week was quiet, we are still in lockdown and it's been extended. And now we have two hospitals on by-pass because there aren't enough staff to work, as they're all either sick or in quarantine. And people complain about lockdowns. If they'd all just stay home, only go out if absolutely necessary and wear a mask for 14 days, this wouldn't happen. I hate lockdown, but sometimes it makes sense. I often wonder if it was called something else, and explained properly, how it would work, or if it was smallpox or cholera or typhoid running rampant, would people be more mindful? I think of all the businesses that are lost, all the families hurting, and all because a few self-centred people put their needs and wants ahead of others. Good news is my seed order came and all were delivered. The seed box has enough for two years. My plan is to save seed each year to always be two years ahead and hopefully not need to buy seed routinely. We are expecting a sunny and warm weekend, and that will make working outside a joy, something to look forward to.

    1. Cath that's a great plan for the seed saving. I havent bought lettuce, pak choy, Wombok, tomato or runner bean seeds for the last 6 years. I have let one of the best plants go to seed and end up with so many more plants. We have lettuce and tomato weedlings that come up all the time. Stay safe in lockdown.

    2. Dear Cath, I hope you do get rain. Not watering the garden is so nice. I am hoping here we still keep getting some rain for a while. I am so glad you got your car! Also it is great you got the seeds. I am learning to save seeds too. Seeds are valuable. Also I worked out packaging them up they are good gardeners gifts!
I hope you get some rain, with love Annabel.xxx

  20. How wonderful that you got that tractor. No waiting for you.

Covid infections are on the rise here in Canada and there is one place I will not enter without wearing a mask. The other places I make sure to visit early enough not to encounter many shoppers, but I am in and out as quickly as possible.

I have a couple of new skills I would love to learn. I would like to learn how to spin and how to weave. Perhaps this winter would be a great time to do so.

    God bless.

  22. After your post last week I was motivated to act, to get better prepared.

I ordered and have already received a presto pressure canner! I have thought about getting one for a couple of years, but I am a little bit intimidated by them, I water bath can but have never been raised with pressure canning, it is such a wonderful way to preserve food (shop bought or homegrown) and I know it will help me add to our pantry once I master how to use it!

The next plan I have is to build a couple more veggies gardens, that will take me a bit of time, but I’m not waiting anymore, I’m just going to do it!!

Thankyou once again for your inspiration 🙏

  24. Well done Annabel on getting your tractor and one that is here and I do agree at the slow rate of shipping you never know if a tractor on order would ever get here which was proven by the dealer ringing you back :) . It will come in handy for so many things there for you and save a lot of trips with the wheelbarrow.

Your baking looks lovely and the boxes decorated with the rose pictures look so adorable. Good that you have been in your sewing room and have been able to organise things. Cleaning around the property with bonfires is also good before we get into the really hot weather.

We have made some progress as the builder that was supposed to turn up in first week in July never turned up and wouldn't answer his phone either so we can only imagine that he doesn't need the work. Making a few phone calls we managed to get hold of a house stumper that will come out at the end of this month or next to do replace the house stumps and level the home. We also got hold of a carpenter through the stumper and he will be out on Thursday to give us a quote to replace the ceiling panels and reinforce the tank stand shed beams so it doesn't sag anymore.

This week I have been working on stocking the pantry with all the things we needed as I had some good promo codes that gave me the extra funds to do so.

Our Vicky challenge added up to $158.30 in savings last week :).

    In the kitchen -
    - Made 3 loaves of wholemeal white bread saving $10.47 over buying them locally.
    - Cooked all meals from scratch.

    In the home -
    - We deep cleaned the lounge room, moved all the furniture and vacuumed everything to get rid of the dust and damp dusted and put everything back. The room smells so much fresher now with far lest dust and dirt.

In the gardens and property -
    - Sprayed weeds in the lawns.
    - I weeded one garden bed and planted more carrot seeds and thinned out and transplanted beetroot seedlings growing too close together.

    Purchases -
    - I put in 3 grocery orders and saved $109.73 in total by using 3 x $20 off promo codes, $10 off WW rewards $, saved 3% off or $9.33 by using our RACQ e-gift card, and buying half price chocolates.
    - From IGA I purchased 8 x 4 pk long roll (equivalent to 6 standard rolls) of toilet paper for $1.25 ea pack or .12c per 100 sheets and buying 2 x 1kg packs of bacon for $7.95 ea saving $38.10 on usual prices.

Hoping everyone has a wonderful week ahead :) .

    2. mikemax thank you and it has been a long haul saving for our home over the years but glad we finally got there and are now living in our new to us home :) .

I think we all need treats in our budgets and DH is the main chocoholic of the family and would have it with anything given half the chance :) , as an example of him making chocolate fudge sauce to go with our homemade apple pie. Treats I feel bring normality back into a home especially in times like this.

We are fortunate that DH and I work so well together to accomplish tasks we need to do. Just as an update we are running at just short of making double mortgage payments for the last 2 years and 7 months we have had our mortgage which we are happy with.

      Have a wonderful week ahead :) .

  25. Congratulations on your new tractor! The older you get the more you will appreciate it. Your timing was perfect! You are doing such a great job using what you have and getting everything organized. Being able to find things when you need them can save hours of our valuable time. You have such a beautiful place there and I am so glad you share through your lovely photos.

I made some progress this week. I have saved zinnia, sunflower and tomato seeds. I plan to include garden tools and a variety of seeds as part of Christmas gifts this year. I have a good stash of store-bought seeds besides these I'm saving. This week I will be doing a seed inventory to see if I need to add any. I froze cherry tomatoes as they just keep on producing. I planted more moringa trees. We have been looking to buy a new truck but prices are sky-high right now so we are going to do some up-grading on our old truck. It has less than 100,000 miles but needs a few body repairs and a lot of cosmetic improvements :-). I figure this will save us about $50,000. No kidding. Have you priced trucks lately?

We are doing all we can to be ready for whatever life throws at us. Our USA is in a terrible mess with the worst leadership in the history of our country. They do not have our best interests in mind. In some ways we are better off in Texas than other areas but illegals continue to stream across our southern border bringing disease including Co-vid along with them. Yesterday the Department of Homeland Security came out with new guidelines for domestic and foreign terrorism. Reading between the lines, one has to wonder if they are trying to protect us or if they are escalating control.

Stay healthy, be alert and have a great week!

  26. Dear Annabel and All,
Although I haven't commented in some time, but do enjoy your beautiful posts and photos. I also enjoy your friendship and learning a bit about other areas of the world!
Good work on getting the tractor and repurposing things like the shed that wasn't being used!
Our youngest daughter is in the process of moving into her own home. She has purchased a few necessities, like ceiling fans and a bed. We have been amazed at the many things on her list of needed or desired items that have been provided by friends or the buy nothing facebook group--everything from an air fryer to cans and boxes of food, and even fresh produce. Often there is enough to share with other friends. Just yesterday, my daughter picked up a box that had already been to a couple members of the group and had things taken and added. It had several things both my daughter and I could use. I was especially pleased to get a couple large containers of mixed nuts.
We are able to post requests for items we are looking for on the Facebook group. I recently said I was looking for a dehydrator. Although she didn't have one to give, someone graciously offered to loan me one she has. That way, I can test it out and determine if it is something worth purchasing. It is so nice being part of this community! My daughter was even able to get 2 books on dehydrating, one is an instructional manual and the other has both instructions and recipes using dehydrated food. We are looking forward to learning from it.
We are both enjoying the opportunity to gift things we no longer need or have extra of, as well as receive things we can use at no cost.
We have had several nice rains this summer and some cooler weather, making it much more bearable.
I keep working to be sure I am stocked up so trips to the store are either pick-up delivered to the car or quick run in and out to keep stocked up and add fresh milk and produce.
We have a local group that provides a meal once a week for homeless teens and also helps with other needs. I can't imagine how hard being homeless would be, let alone as a teen. (They don't turn adults away.) We made a Costco trip to purchase some the things they were in need of and were also given some of the things on their list from another free source so were able to add to what we had purchased,
Wishing you a wonderful week ahead!
    Love from Arizona,
    Elaine

  27. I did another week of gathering fragments and preparing meals from them. We used fresh only fresh fruit from this week's grocery produce purchases.
I added a few things to my pantry supply but decided it was worth while to order paper plates and slider plastic baggies. I've not seen paper plates in nearly four months in our markets and while I don't care to use them daily they are handy especially during stormy seasons. We've a tropical storm making it's way over us this weekend/week ahead. I won't have paper plates on hand if we need them this weekend but I'll have them next week!
Our tomato plant is finally blooming once again. I had to repot it. The basil and mint, rosemary and chives, even the lavender are finally all catching hold. We won't have frost until mid-November so there's plenty of time to get in a harvest from all these things.
I was given a small cultivator. It's not for breaking ground, but more for keeping broken ground weeded. I'm pleased to have it.
I am making lots of lists of things I want to try to get hold of and utilize especially for my pantry. I've looked over a lot of my supplies of things and am trying to stay atop of replacements, etc.
This week I will be harvesting some flower seeds. I will get quite a heavy harvest on one of the heirloom flower seeds I'd planted. Next year I shall certainly enjoy having more of these lovely plants.

  30. Annabel I can see you on your mean, green, tractor machine. I am assuming that as a John Deer it will be green. Bluey reckons that John Deer and Kabota are the best tractors to get. I hope you got a bucket for the front. How easy it will be to get in the sheep yards and get a bucket load of poop to add to the garden. So much easier than a shovel and a wheel barrow.
I must be feeling the turn in the season. This week the venetian blinds have all been cleaned, the interior of the windows have been washed(water restrictions mean I cant do the exteriors), furniture moved and the walls and floors behind the furniture has been scrubbed. I emptied out the spare/guest room and reorganised it. All the bedding was washed and the doona and pillows put out in the sunshine. My Brother and his wife rang me the day after I did this and asked if they could come for a visit. We havent seen them for a long time so this will be lovely. Of course they are coming so they can meet Spencer. The room is clean and ready for them.
My pantries have been emptied and cleaned out. The holes were identified and have been filled. I have cleaned out a couple of the raised garden beds and have been working on getting the soil ready for the next planting. Bluey finished my potting table and this has been put to good use with lots of seeds being planted into the seed trays, to be ready to go into the refurbished garden beds.
Bluey is the bargain hunter here. He brought home a bag of green apples and a market bag of red capsicums. He got both of these for free. These were seconds that the farmers couldnt sell to the supermarkets because they had some blemishes on them. The apples have been stewed up and are in containers in the freezer. The capsicums and a few chilli's from the garden, became jars of sweet chilli jam.
My sewing machine had a hissy fit whilst I was making a set of overalls for Tilly. I managed to finish the overalls on the overlocker with the top stitching being done on my treadle machine. My good electric machine is at the sewing machine Drs till the end of next week. I so hope he is able to give her a good health check. I am missing not being able to sew the way I want.
I am looking forward to seeing some photos of your craft room shelves in total. I can just see it as such a pretty space with all those rose coloured boxes. The last room I need to Spring clean is the sewing room. It isnt too bad but it does need a bit of tidying up and various items put away.
    Life is Spring cleaning good.

  31. That was excellent God-given wisdom about the tractor! It should also be much easier to get parts should you need them. There is a homesteader I follow on YouTube who bought a very old tractor and fixed it up because it is not computerized like many of the brand new American models. He says he can fix it himself when needed.

It's getting crazier here all the time. Insane decisions being made. The COVID hospitalizations are spiking again so I'm getting ready for another lockdown. The handwriting is on the wall. Adding to that so much of California where a lot of produce, nuts, olives (olive oil), etc. are grown is in extreme drought and even on fire, I'm freezing some extra nuts and stocking up on olive oil. My very good friend has a farm in South Dakota, their crops were either very small this year or deemed a disaster by their crop insurance company. Wheat has definitely been affected!
