Feather your Nest Friday, 30th April, 2021.

Can you believe April is almost over?  May tomorrow!  This makes me feel the year is flying by too fast.

I had a really good week!  Looking back over it I see a week of increase!

Some of the ways we built up our home, garden and preparedness included:

I did some trading.  Very often we have a broody hen.   But I have no rooster and decided really this is silly as I could be breeding my own hens.   I traded eggs and fig trees (that I dug up and potted) for a beautiful rooster. He is an Australorp.  I have four hens this breed also.   It was a day of adventure.  I headed off to meet a lady I knew through a livestock buy, swap and sell group.   We met and chatted and she is a wealth of knowledge so I loved talking with her.   She handed me a big box and I wasn't game to open it so it wasn't until I got home I saw what I had!   It was a trust trade!

Here is my beauty.

He has the most beautiful nature and gorgeous black eyes!  I love him!  Black Velvet is his name!

He is blackest black but when the light is shining on him he is deep green.

In the deal I also got a Pekin Bantam Rooster as none of the bantam eggs have been hatching.
He also is quiet and gentle and so cute.

He is actually tiny and round like a bowling ball.   He crows but it is so quiet it is kind of funny.

This is the girls checking him out.

This was such a good trade and the lady was asking if I wanted to do another trade soon.  I say yes!

Then I had another adventure.  A while back most of my pet lambs got mixed up with the farm sheep.  I did not worry as I thought I would get them back easily as they all come to me.   But time passed and life got so busy.   This was all fine until I heard early in the week that four truckloads of sheep were going to be loaded up and taken from the farm.  Holy cow!  (Or Holy Sheep!)  I knew I better get moving or my own sheep could be mixed in and be taken away.

Armed with two packets of Milk Arrowroot biscuits we drove out to a big mob of sheep.  This was way down the back of the property.  We drove into this paddock and five huge Kangaroos jumped the fence in front of us.   As we approached the flock of sheep they ran away.   Eventually we just got as close as they would let us and I got out of the ute and shouted "Lambie Lambie! I've got biscuits!"   All that happened is the sheep ran like mad in the opposite direction.   I turned to come back to the ute and I heard a noise... I heard galloping.  Two huge sheep were coming at me like I was about to be hit by a train!  I was rather impressed and touched that instead of running off with the others these two heard me and still came to me after all this time!

Now we were a couple  miles from home.  We decided to slowly walk them back to our house paddock where they belonged.  This is how it went...

By the last few hundred yards they were very tired.... because they are pregnant!!   See what I mean about a week of increase!

Now they are safe and sound in the home paddock with hay and water.

They are not cute little lambs anymore but they are just as friendly.

The next day Andy went out to another mob of sheep and repeated this process and brought two more back.    Two of my sheep are dark brown and Luke was able to spot these in the yarded up sheep and get them for me.   So my numbers were increasing...
Finally yesterday a truck came into for another load.   I raced up to the yards to have one last go.    The men were in discussion about several sheep that were not big enough or in good shape to go on the truck.  I piped up "I'll have them! I'll nurse them back to health!" and just like that I now have more sheep than I started with, all mine back and at least five that  I can see are pregnant!   A week of increase!

Chloe gave me baskets of green apples.  Yes, more apples!

I made two big batches of baby food.  Thomas had veggies and Sidney had half pumpkin and half apples.  Sounds strange to em but this is how he likes it!

I made a light fruit cake and used Gluten Free flour.  It worked out really well.

I did some sewing and started on handkerchiefs.

Also I made up sets of gift tags, using free images from Strangers and Pilgrims on Earth Blog.   Jes has a lot of Beatrix Potter projects.  These tags with "Fresh from the Farm" appeal to me so much!

The stickers that I am using on the handkerchief packaging are also from Jes.  She has a store of gorgeous stickers and labels.  I thought the "bless you" verse was just right!  I have lots more hankies cut out ready to sew.

Broccoli was on special so I made soup and it was beautiful.

At the op shop I found a bag of vintage braids and trims.   I am thrilled with these!

This week I invested in more animal supplies and in wool.

My yarn supply is an investment in sanity and contentment as well as practical.

Maybe by next week we will have some lambs!   This is hard to tell so it will be a surprise but it will be so amazing to have lambs from such friendly pet sheep.  I can't wait!

We have had beautiful Autumn days and cool nights.  I get a little bit more done each day in the garden. I really hope it was a good week for you too.  How did you add to your pantry, garden or preparedness and build up your home?xxx

  1. Dear Annabel, Congratulations on your fine looking roosters. And thankyou for sharing the video, it is very cute. Your sheep would have really loved those biscuits after so long without. Exciting times ahead for you with baby things. I have had a good week and a most productive day today. I washed all our bedding this morning including the dogs - the sunshine has dried these and three other loads of washing quickly so I have been able to iron the pillow cases and get them back on the beds already. I am roasting more pumpkin as I cook your impossible pie using more roasted pumpkin and feta - I've not done it that way yet. An impossible pie was requested this morning by DD. The extra roasted pumpkin will go in my soup pot in with a lamb shank and barley are cooking already. I also managed to do another batch of muffins, this time with blueberries. On Monday we were invited to an 18th birthday party the following night, being out of town I was very thankful my gift stash as I didn't need to rush off and buy anything. On Wednesday I had to drive an hour away to pick up some meat. I made sure I left early and went to a little town's op shop that I have never managed to get to. I was happy to find two steel pantry extender shelves that help fit more cans in the pantry. I also got a great book on poultry that has a lot of living sustainably information too. Well done with your week, life is good here too. Love Clare PS. I also wanted to say I have finally managed to start writing down what I have been doing and it paid off today when someone said (slightly sarcastically) 'what have you been up to this morning' I was able to rattle off quite a list of jobs already achieved by 11.30 am to which I was met with silence... and then 'what time did you get up?".

    2. What a lovely idea to put pumpkin into the Impossible pie. I totally agree on the benefit of writing down what you achieve each day. It really helped me at a time when my children were younger and my husband would wonder what i did all day! Now I love Annabel's Tuesday Afternoon Club because, even though my children are grown, I still need to see a purpose in what I do, homemaking wise. Sometimes , when a week has been particularly difficult, I am so grateful that I can see for myself, something positive has been completed, despite everything else that is happening in my life. So Thank You to Annabel, and to all the Bluebirds who comment, or acknowledge each little task, or item made.

    4. Dear Clare, Well done on making your list and being able to reply with all you had been doing! I think roast pumpkin is great in the pies. Also fetta. Very healthy too.
When everything is clean, fresh and washed it is so nice. I love getting into bed with clean sheets. The op shopping was really good! You did exactly what I would do... allow a little time in your trip to check the op shop and you were rewarded too with great finds!
      A very good week!

Dear Gill, Thank you so much! The club keeps me on the hop to make sure I have things to post so it is good for me. My children are grown too but there isn't less work to do it is just different and the house have changed. It is always so good to feel we achieved lots and that we helped. With love Annabel.xxx

  2. Oh my word! Milk arrowroot eating sheep, they remembered, that’s so sweet, and what a great swap with the roosters and well behaved ones at that, this bartering thing sounds very profitable . Those Apple look delicious, I seriously believe no one would need directions to your house Annabel, they would just follow the delicious aromas from your kitchen. Your week sound very productive and the weather has been really lovely here in the Riverina, probably one of the nicest autumns in the 12 years I’ve lived here, your liberty hankies are beautiful, I’ve been making some too.
I’ve been picking zucchini and capsicum and raspberries and rhubarb and herbs, I planted lots of bulbs in pots to bring in later for indoor colour. I also have done a lot of winter preparations and tidied up my pantry and now I can make a list of what we need, as I want everything well stocked and some freezer meals made too as I won’t have work(wages) for a few weeks because of impending surgery ( I find out more next Saturday). The world is just changing too quickly it scares me to not be prepared as much as I can and the past few weeks have sealed that deal with me, I urge everyone to add a good check up with your family doctor, as you just never know, I’m trying to stay calm and busy making home well prepared for my husband and the girls while I’m away, and recovering. Hoping to plant more spring bulbs and some winter veg this weekend and give the garage a good clean and finish cleaning the garden. Next week is busy extra hours at work and fixing up mums and her house so I know she is ok, I hope everybody has had a great week and that another good week awaits.

I am really enjoying making the hankies. I am happy to hear you are making them too.
I hope you are ok waiting on this news next Saturday. Waiting can be very difficult. I hope too that your surgery is a success and you have a fast recovery.
I agree with you... meals ahead, a well stocked pantry... all we do pays off. Have a good week... I can see you will be busy getting ahead and helping your Mum. Do let us know how you are doing. With much love, Annabel.xxx

  3. Those woolly baa baas following the car through the paddock so they can get a biccie is hilarious. How clever for you to have ended up with more baa baas, who are going to have their own little baa baas soon. Naughty me can only think of the lovely wool and meat that you have added to your paddocks.
This week a friend popped over to see if I could do a little mending for her. She turned up with a bag of clothes that she no longer wanted. In the bag was a brand new dress, complete with tags, $150 and a brand new set of cotton pants, $69. There were plenty of tshirts in this lot as well. Katie and I have ended up with a few nice additions to our wardrobe. My friend went home feeling happy as she had her favourite clothes mended. I think I might have come out of this barter a bit better off than my friend.
The garden is providing us with plenty of greens, pumpkin and sweet potato. Our girls are keeping us and Katie's house in eggs. I also use eggs as payment with a friend who has a wonderful quilting machine. She gets eggs and I get to use her machine to do my quilting. A bag of veg and eggs went off with Katie for her inlaws. They sent around fresh caught sand crabs in return.
I am loving this cooler weather, where I can spend more time in my garden. Life is autumn fresh good.

The photos I have seen of your garden it is just beautiful to have so much produce! And eggs! You are becoming quite self sufficient. Obviously this all benefits Katies household, what a help this would be.
Access to the quilting machine is a huge help also! Another good trade! Jane I am just loving trading!
It has just suddenly cooled here. Almost time to light the fire!

  7. What an eventful and productive week for you! You certainly did add to your reserves!
This past week, my friend told me about King Arthur flour on clearance- 50 cents for a 5 pound bag and we were able to get 30 bags (150 pounds) - 10 bags for me and 10 each for two of our daughters! There was an ibotta rebate so the cost went from $15 total to us profiting $3.69 to acquire 150 pounds of flour that retailed for $140.70!! What a blessing for all 3 families!
We continued to make improvements on our gardens. We are putting a perimeter fence with cow panel fencing around it to keep marauding veg-eating critters (squirrels, raccoons, bunnies, etc) out. We dug down along the inside edges of our wooden raised beds to line with heavy plastic to protect the wood from biodegrading. The posts are put in now. Today we will run the fencing and build the gate. I also was able to purchase some veg plants in 4 packs for 89 cents! So I added 4 more broccoli plants to the 8 I already had planted. We love broccoli and are low in our supply in the freezer. We are being very deliberate in what and how much we plant and hav tailored it to refill our pantry with what we need!
I also planted lettuce, kale, cucumbers, cilantro, more parsley and transferred the last 15 blackberry cuttings that have rooted beautifully from the sand to actual soil in pots. I hope to sell these and will be starting more next week.
I planted more of our strawberry runners that have rooted and all 6 beds of strawberries are blooming and look promising! Each of our fruit trees has tiny fruit forming!
It rained all yesterday so the things I had planted are all standing tall!! I think this will be a glorious gardening and harvesting season!
Glad you are finding such success, Annabel!

  11. Hi Annabel and everyone,

Annabel, your roosters are beautiful and I loved hearing about your sheep adventure and seeing them follow along for biscuits! How fun. I completely agree about how yarn stash/supply also promotes content and calm!

This week was a little easier being back on-site for work, I think we are starting to get used to it again. I too was a bit taken aback since many places still permit work from home, but our campus is bringing everyone back. We have lots of wipes and fabric masks and bring our lunches from home!

I did a lot of cooking to help with the change in schedule/site: baked two loaves of bread for work sandwiches, did a big roast and veggies in the crockpot (and froze some for future quick meals), cooked some chicken breast and froze some, turkey broth in the crockpot, oatmeal pucks for the freezer for workday breakfasts, made a depression-style chocolate cake, and cooked up a bunch of potatoes. It was also a good week to clean my fridge and big freezer, and prep and freeze a bunch of carrots that needed using for making stock later on. We also did a stock up of baking items for the pantry and butter for the freezer - the first time we have been able to get butter in stick form in quite a while! For some reason all that was available was in 1-pound blocks, and I do prefer the sticks for baking. I still had a little in my freezer, but not much! Saturday was a big washing day and it felt so good to get that done.

We had some wild hailstorms this week, but all is well aside from some damage to window screens and solar lights in the garden, which amazingly my husband was able to fix. It looks like even my blackberry canes (with green berries on them) survived! I am stunned and thankful - the storm was so loud I could not hear the weather radio announcement, and that radio is loud! We will have someone out to look at the roof just in case there is damage we didn't see. When I was looking things over outdoors last night I saw zinnia seedlings and some of my vegetable and fruit seedlings peeping their heads out of the soil - a nice surprise since we even had a freeze last week (our weather has been super weird). And this means my saved seeds from last year are viable - very exciting to me, and I will do it again this year - lots of seed packet money saved on that zinnia patch!

As I had a free few minutes or so this past week I put in some stitches on my cross-stitch pieces or knitting; little bits of progress really do make a difference and I also feel better and more relaxed with some crafting time. These will be gifts or items to decorate our home or keep us warm.

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

That hail storm sounds terrible but yes lucky the damage wasn't even worse and so good your husband could do the repairs.
I think at the end of a busy day or even as part of a regular day some stitching is kind of a quiet time that is good for us. We just need it.
Well done on the seed saving. I was just cutting up pumpkins and I have the seeds sat aside to dry out! With much love Annabel.xxx

  12. I love that you have your sheep at home and that you are expecting sweet little lambs! The video was great! That is wonderful to be able to make food for your little grandsons. Love in every spoon full!

We had to have some expensive work done on our well but when we looked at the cost and the twenty one years since we have had any work done we know that our good well water is way cheaper than municipal water. Tomatoes and green beans were planted this week now that cold weather is gone. We harvested some green onions and they are beautiful and smell so good. I went looking for flowers but they seem to be in short supply. Maybe it is just oo early since the weather has been so cold.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

I have been waiting all week for lambs but no arrivals so far. I can see the ewes getting bigger though they can still run!
They put really dodgy things in water is my feeling too so all our lives we have had rainwater to drink and sometimes the whole house, here we drink rainwater and the laundry and bathrooms use bore water. So we are completely stand alone for water.
Maybe more seedlings will have been available this week, I hope you can get what you want. I am balancing flowers and edibles in my garden much more. Mainly as I love flowers so much I need more!

Your garden would be benefiting so much from your work and the mulching. The rewards are so good. I am putting out a lot of fertiliser that has been sitting around. I think over time I have added so much but it is all helping. Some things are a gradual process.

  18. Dear Annabel,
You had a wonderful and blessed week. I was so impressed by the roosters, sheep and yarn. You do amazing things every week and are so productive.
I have been steady on trying to go through our whole house and eliminate what we don't want and no longer use. I had two huge boxes of office supplies that were new and I knew I would not use them as I already have plenty, so two weeks ago our children and grandchildren were over and they took what they wanted.
In addition, at that time, I had some hand crocheted trim that was John's mothers and grandmothers and I had no use for it, so my grand daughter, who I taught to sew, was thrilled with it. I have four huge storage containers left of crocheted, embroidered and knitted items from John's maternal line to go through and decide upon. There is a very large crocheted bedspread and several tablecloths.
We have continued to watch our food storage and try to make sure it doesn't run down. Things in the U.S. are very unstable right now, due to the new avenue the government is taking. All over the world it is definitely "pay attention," and pray season.
Spring is coming now and I am trying to plan some areas for roses. In the past, we have focused on herbs, vegetables and fruits, but I would like to add some roses to the mix. We live in a cold climate so have to be careful what I choose.
Have a wonderful weekend, Bluebirds, and many blessings to all of you.

That hand crochet trim would be the most gorgeous thing! I am so glad your Grand daughter wanted it. I hope someone would like the bedspread, what an heirloom!
I am watching everything closely. I am seeing a lot of people reporting various shortages and in the last two days I saw an unusual number of people that were asking why the stores are like they are. Some sounded worried and bewildered. A bit late to the party but people were being kind and explaining to them. I just haven't ever seen this much chatter on the subject.
I recently added some roses just for joy. I love them. And they seem to be going well. Hoping it has been a good week for you, because of my hectic week I am so late to reply! With much love, Annabel.xxx

Nice to hear everyone's news. Thanks for sharing.

With lots of rain, we are enjoying lots of flowers. The kids brought home wild honeysuckle from the park. So we are enjoying large bouquets around the house. My 12 yr. old daughter is selling her handmade jewelry, while they let me squeeze a basket of homemade jellies onto their table. My 11 yr. old daughter inherited her mother's decorating genes, so she went to help with set-up and displaying the art (as there was no wall space). Yes, my buttons are popping off from pride. I'm blessed with such amazing children! So glad we chose to home-school all those years ago....
    Have a blessed week, everyone!

    1. Dear Leslie,
Oh that is funny because my voice sounds a little funny as I talk to the animals like babies lol
I love Honeysuckle! That is something I dont have and should plant! I would love to come to your barn sale! This sounds wonderful. It is beautiful how the girls are setting up stalls and another is working on the settings. Making a stall look inviting is a skill! I would be proud too. If this has already taken place I hope they did very well! This whole process covers so many skills it is fantastic. They will probably be planning bigger and better for next year already! With much love, Annabel.xxx

  20. Dear Annabel,
What a beautiful week you've had! I loved the video and the chance to hear your voice.
This week I harvested dandelions to make dandelion jelly or honey. I made gluten free flour tortillas using cassava flour and stocked the freezer with them as well as gluten free pizza crusts. Took pantry inventories to see what needed replacement. We worked outside getting the garden ready. I finished and mailed out Mother's Day cards to friends and family. Wishing everyone a good and productive week ahead. Blessings, Cookie

    1. Dear Cookie,
I really feel like pizza. You have encouraged me to get some dough going.
Your Mothers Day cards were just beautiful. It is Mothers Day here also on Sunday and we are having a special afternoon tea. I hope it will be a very nice day for you also! With love, Annabel.xxx
