Feather your Nest Friday, 5th February, 2021.

It has been a big week!   Actually it seems much longer than a week since last Friday!

Also we have had summer weather and now it is cold and pouring with rain.  So a few seasons in one week!  We are glad of so much rain, just fantastic for us!

I can count many things that helped build up the household and economy in all kinds of ways!

My neighbour let me pick Quinces in her orchard.

She also gave me some succulent cuttings, a big old bird cage and two old garden pots.   It turned out that I just planted the pots up with the cuttings!

'

I am working on the birdcage.  Hopefully next week you can see what I did with it!

Chloe had her two Alpaca's shorn.  So I have a black and a caramel Alpaca fleece to put away to spin, trade or gift.

I met up with Wendy (The Nesting Hen) and she gave me beautiful fresh rhubarb which is perfect to go with all the apples I have.   She also gave me old sheet music for card making.  I sent her home with eggs and apples!   And we have fun catching up!   While in town I went to their two thrift stores.   Someone had donated loads of beautiful fabrics!  Oh my goodness I had the best time going through them.    There was an old man running the shop.   He spotted my enthusiasm and told me how there were many more fabrics out in the back room that were not priced yet but I could go have a look.
Things just got better and better!  Some of what I found were dream fabrics for me such as old thick velvets in floral prints.

Most of these are velvets!  I also got a stack of plain cottons and ginghams and some smaller bits of pretty florals.

I asked the man if my friend was to come in shortly would she also be allowed to look at the fabrics still out the back?   He asked her name and agreed.   So I raced back to tell Wendy where the fabrics were all stacked and what to say to the man.   She also did well!   I was just thrilled with my day!

Oh!  I also found beautiful little boy clothes including some brand name items as new.   And a pure wool underlay for a cot.

Mum gave me some Gluten Free Chicken Schnitzels.
Mum gave Chloe and me are huge ham.   We did a deal that I would cook it and slice it up.   Then we would share it.   We are going to get a few meals and many sandwiches, rolls, quiches and other things from this ham!

The local supermarket also had some deals.  I got a big bag of bananas marked down so I am making up a heap of banana cakes.

I cooked a lamb bone in the slow cooker.  The next day I removed the fat and cooked two pumpkins in the liquid.  This gave me 16 containers of baby food for Sidney.

I started working on my apples.  First was apple puree and Thomas was the first to try it.   Now he likes apple!   I have a lot of apple puree frozen, this was all for baby food.    Now I am on to stewed and baked apples.

Mum came by and I sent her home with some Gluten Free scones.

Before this cool weather came in I made a large potato and a large rice salad. I shared these with Chloe.

A dear friend gave me a gift of essential oil roller balls, labels for them and Ylang Ylang essential oil.  Over the weekend I am going to make up some blends.   During the Corona virus  I made up many germ killing blends and sprays with alcohol plus hand wipes.  Now I realise my supplies are low.  Time to make up some more.

All week I picked tomatoes.  I have zucchini coming on but not ready yet.  I had a rush of them then a lull... now more coming.   I cooked up a slow cooker full of tiny tomatoes and made a tomato sauce.  Then this became a sauce of meatballs and spaghetti. I made a big batch!

All week I kept on crocheting in the evening and making pot holders in my 15 minutes of sewing (which usually blew out to about half an hour.  But this adds up so much!)

My Aunt sent me the gift of the most beautiful pink towel. I love it.

So with some days better than others the week still added up to some good things!   Most of it was not planned.  More a case of making the most of opportunities and what came my way.  Doing the next thing.

I hope good things came your way too and you had a chance to add to your pantry or garden.  I think my fabric cupboard was built up the most ever in one day!  So I am happy with that.

Have a very good weekend! xxx

      Wow you certainly are productive.
I’m not sure if you have ever shared your recipe for gluten free scones. I have a 8yr grandson who is a celiac and he loves scones.
If you are happy to share your recipe I would be grateful.

  4. Dear Annabel,
You were very productive this past week. I truly admire all that you do. The fabric is beautiful. The small print velvet would make gorgeous dresses for Harper and Scarlet.
All of the food preparation and baking that you do for others is such a blessing for them. They are very fortunate to have you.
Have a blessed and wonderful weekend.

  6. It looks like you had a lovely week Annabel! The fabric haul sounds amazing. And ham from your mum is wonderful, so many uses! You will be keeping busy with two hungry boys on puréed food lol.

School started back up today and everyone’s first day went really well. Unfortunately on the second day one of my boys broke a bone so that threw a spanner in the works a bit! He is feeling much better than he was, we have worked out the pain medication and he is able to move more freely. It was a good reminder of how lovely people can be, three phone calls and I had the other children taken care of while I stayed with him at the hospital.

I was so pleased to have baked for lunchboxes before school started, so lunches were easy to prepare in the mornings.

On Monday we went to the supermarket and found 1kg trays of beef mince for $5 each! I haven’t seen them so low in probably 10 years. I bought 14kg. They needed to be used by the next day, so I split them and froze them in seperate containers. I’m so happy with that find.

I found some clearance toys that were reduced by another 40% if ordered online, perfect for kids birthday parties. So I added to the gift cupboard and it’s looking really healthy. Spending on gifts was an area I wanted to really focus on this year, so this was a real bonus.

We have a long weekend here which everyone needs after a tiring first week back! Our local green grocer has cucumbers priced at 2 for $1 so I’m going to make some picked cucumbers.

    Have a lovely weekend!

    1. Dear Jen,
I am so sorry for your poor son! Yes getting back to school well is a good thing. But sounds like you had one smooth day only! Since you have not lived there a long time it is fantastic you already have that support where you can make a call and have back up like that. This is really good. I hope this break will heal well and not have ongoing pain. I can only imagine there must be pain and aches with a break. And kids are growing too so I dont know how that fits in with a broken bone.
Great deal on the mince. You can do so much with that. And also I remember the never ending birthday parties and needing presents so getting ahead there too is great.
That is a good price on the cucumbers, better than I have seen! I hope you al get a restful weekend! With love Annabel.xxx

  7. Hi from COLD Indiana! Your succulents look so nice in that planter! Lucky you to be gifted those. More wonderful finds at the OP shop! I don't go a lot but when I do go I don't seem to find a lot. Maybe it is just me. I haven't ask it of others who live in the states. After a week I am over being sick from the first covid shot. It was a Phizer shot and does not affect your DNA. Not looking forward to the 2nd one but looking forward to a little more freedom. When you cook up your sauce from the tiny tomatoes what do you do about the skins? I have never made sauce before but seem to be able to grow the little tomatoes in my courtyard better than the larger ones. Your gluten free scones or biscuits as I call them look so good! So fun for you to meet up with Wendy! I have been trying to sew 15 minutes a day too and play my piano 15 minutes a day also. Now I am wishing I had not gotten rid of some of my old music years ago! Could have made cards! I have run some off on the printer to use though. Thanks for inspiring us to keep trying! Nancy

    1. Hi Nancy, I have mainly the small cherry tomatoes. I dont skin anything. I cook them up then use the stick blender. Then I taste and season... I added pepper, a spoon of brown sugar, onion and garlic powder and oregano. It is really nice.
I am prepared to send time in an op shop, go through the tubs and drawers, stacks, I always tell them hat I am looking for. The ones I go to regularly I made friends with and this helps me find the things I am wanting. I sit on the floor and go through tubs item by item. So I did a lot. But these shops vary. They vary a lot in prices too.
I hope you feel much better soon! With love, Annabel.xxx

  8. Dear Annabel,

What a good haul you've had this week, both in terms of food and your op shop finds plus trades with Wendy! Those velvets are gorgeous! Those little boys are sure being looked after very well by their grandma! :)

It's been a busy week here. I sewed a big tote for shopping out of an old damask tablecloth and an old sheet...sounds "old" and dingy, but actually it's pretty cute and very serviceable. I'd never made a tote before, and did have a little trouble because my heavy duty sewing machine was giving me some trouble, so I had to sew it on my other machine (and it was a bit of a headache to get all those layers through the machine), but it all worked out in the end. I also picked up a packet of fabric dye to see if I can freshen up some of the other canvas bags we have here for shopping that have various stains on them that won't wash out. Fingers crossed it will work! (Worth a try, anyway, as the bags themselves are otherwise in good shape.) I've also done quite a bit of knitting, a bit more painting (as in house, not picture :)), made a few batches of cookies for our upcoming annual parish meeting, and read a couple of novels! (I know; reading doesn't exactly sound like it's accomplishing anything, but it keeps me off of the computer and getting myself worked up...Ha, ha.) I'm hoping to get a few seeds ordered this upcoming week...time to start thinking about that again!

Well, best get to making supper. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    xx Jen in NS

Bags are so useful. A damask tablecloth sounds like great material to make up!
It is good to get seeds ordered ahead of time. Last year there was a rush on seeds for sure.
I count reading, crochet, you tube.. many things as a way to relax and step back from the world! Important for us all.
The cookies will be nice for the meeting. Everyone likes a bit of a treat. Have a lovely weekend to you too! With love Annabel.xxx

I like to have projects lined up. Now and then I have too many! But mainly I like to be working on a few things and have more to go on to next. I would feel bad to have nothing to go on with ie run out of supplies. It would seem like wasting time to me. I do get in a mess though and have to stop and have a good tidy up!
Hope the new week will go well for you Barb! With love Annabel.xxx

  10. Oh Annabel what a productive week! I love how you always seem to find such wonderful things at op shops, and more importantly go on to do wonderful things with your finds!

My week started off so well, I found some delicious peaches on sale for $2/kg at my local fruit shop, on a whim I bought a box full (10kg) but then I had to bottle them all!! I had all the jars and ingredients at home to water bath can my peaches, and I ended up with 19 bottles of peaches and a couple of kilos for fresh eating, all for under $22!!

But then on Tuesday I hit the wall, not sure if I over did things on Monday but I have Fibromyalgia and it flared up big time, I haven’t been able to do much of anything all week since! I tried to go to work on Thursday but I had to come home at lunchtime 😩 I’ll get through it I always do but it’s so frustrating!

Have a wonderful week and I look forward to reading about what the new week brings for you!

I am sorry about your flare up. For me it used to be I would be doing lots then be hit with a migraine and it would take me out for a few days. It was awful. I get less now. The only other thin g is I get severe body aches if I eat wheat. It absolutely wipes me out for about five to six days. However I dont know if this is like fibro. I hope you are feeling much better! 11. Dear Annabel, Thankyou for another inspiring post. The concrete pot looks perfect. I have had a good week. I have two tomato plants that are just giving and giving so I made tomato sauce for the first time. I was a little bit nervous about it but I think it has turned out well. I also made some fig jam from figs our neighbors gave me. I have a bench full of gifted peaches and nashi pears which I will process over the weekend. I love your op shop finds - I have had a fun time at a few over the last week too. I buy old flannel sheets when I see them to make dishcloths and was thrilled to find cute pig ones and one with tractors and cars on it for the males in my life. And I was excited to find a Jemima Puddleduck figurine in perfect condition too (I love Beatrix Potter). You are such a blessing to your family Annabel, I aspire to be like you in the future. 13. Annabel how wonderful you found all that lovely fabric in the op shop and the lovely gentleman let you look out the back and also allowed your friend to go look later too and you both did well :) . Your potted succulents are lovely in their rustically beautiful pots and your cooking wonderful.

We had a week of things breaking down firstly our whipper snipper engine broke off the engine mount and fell on the ground while DH was using it and the pull cord mechanism also broke on the same machine :o . Then I was using our 7 year old push mower and the mower started to overheat and stopped and wouldn't go again, darn and dash :) . We have been home small engine self learned mechanics this week to repair things.

Our Vicky challenge added up to $144.56 in savings last week :) .

    In the kitchen -
    - Cooked all meals from scratch.
    - Baked 4 loaves of combination wholemeal bread in our bread maker saving us $14.56 over buying the loaves locally.

    Financial -
    - We earned $210 in paid gardening jobs.
    - Paid an extra part payment off our mortgage saving time and interest off our home loan.
    - Saved more money into our home maintenance fund bringing us to 79.33% of the way there to our goal and saved more into our 6 monthly living expenses emergency fund bringing us to 61.72% of the way to our goal.
    - Managed to save enough from other budget categories to buy another new push mower with and also with extra funds in the budget we purchased a new whipper snipper too.

    In the gardens -
    - Separated corn seedlings that sprouted after we trench composted shredded bean and corn plants in there. Think DH missed a couple of dried corn cobs in the mulching process and the kernels survived and sprouted :) . I ended up after thinning them out planting 3 large garden beds of bantam sweet corn seedlings.
    - DH sprayed around the paths, fence lines, around the outside of the garden beds, around the fruit trees and buildings for weeds and grass.
    - We mowed and whipper snipped the property as we have had a lot of rain here.
    - Comically we tried to change the ride on lawn mower blades with me with my booted feet on the blades and DH trying to undo the nuts on them which failed dismally :) . We then went on the internet and found a tutorial and found out you simply put in a block of wood in the deck to stop the blades turning and lock them in. Ratchet spanner in hand and me holding the block of wood in the deck we changed our ride on lawn mower blades in 10 minutes saving us $60 in labour over sending it in to have the mower blades replaced at the local mower shop :) .
    - We then played Mr and Mrs fix it again and changed the spark plug on our old lawn mower and cleaned out the air filter which was mightily clogged and saved ourselves another $70 -$100 on a service for the mower. It now starts and goes but we will have to wait until next time we mow to find out whether the motor is still overheating.

Somehow I would rather crochet and sew but the fix it small and larger engine experiences this week have been a good learning curve :).

Have a great week ahead everyone :).

I have noticed that if one things breaks down it gives other things ideas. It seems to always be the way!
I am very happy you also had rain! Things will be looking good and tanks full!
Good job on all you fixed and using You Tube to work things out! What good savings. I did have a mental image of you and your boots holding those blades still! Good job. It is good to learn these things. They are good skills. And teamwork is good!
Your savings goals are getting there too! Almost 80% on the home maintenance fund... that is getting close. When so close I think it makes the last bit easier somehow as the motivation to finish it off is high!
I hope your seedlings take off for you. Having had rain things may well be off to a good start.
Now I hope you do get some time for sewing and some easier tasks too! With love, Annabel.xxx

We have not had a stove for ten days so it has not been the most frugal week but instead of paying $3400 for the replacement I found a great well cared for used one for a total of $600 after we had it repaired and installed. It feels like we have a new kitchen!

    1. Dear Maree,
      Thank you so much!
If you have a normal scone recipe you like then continue with that only using GF SR flour. As you know the consistency you want the mix you can tell if you need a bit more flour or not. Otherwise my recipe takes into account that I am a bad scone maker! I do 4 cups of GF self raising flour, 2 cups milk, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder (yes this is extra even though using SR flour) one egg, a third of a cup of melted butter. Yes I know this is all wrong... mix well, I do in my kitchen Aid mixer. Gently press out onto a floured board and cut out thick shapes for your scones , brush with milk or butter and milk. Bake as normal. You can add cheese or pumpkin or sultanas or dates when you are mixing. Normally I double this as they freeze well. With dough you have to give and take a bit. If too sticky a little bit more flour. This always works and the usual way of making scones never would rise for me hence I do it basically wrong, but it works !
Maree for your Grandson any recipe you have usually made just substitute GF flour and in the main it works out just fine. I hope this helps. With love Annabel.xxx

  19. Hi Annabel and Bluebirds

What wonderful finds you always seem to have Annabel. The material is just gorgeous. Yesterday I made a start on a Winnie Pooh quilt that I am making for a friends baby. I also finished off 2 library bags that I have made for DD10.

This week I am shopping out of my freezer for meals as there are a few items that need to be used up. I was gifted a pumpkin and I might just make some into a puree for my friend's baby, thanks for the wonderful idea.

I have been having some time to me recently (much needed after school holidays) and have found that this benefits everyone as I am in a better frame of mind each day. I have been busy doing diamond dotz and sewing and this helps me to relax a little better. Last night during a violent storm I decided to have a flick through a book I got in the latter part of last year and have found some wonderful homemade items for presents. Today I will make a list of the thing I need to buy. Little things each day add up to be a lot at the end of the week.

Alpaca's are so adorable. We have some beautiful photos of DD10 at the age of 1 with some on a friend's farm. We have a farm near us that we have been meaning to go to. Must remember for the next holidays.

Take Care and have a wonderful week

  21. Hello my lovely what a productive week as always.
Firstly, that VELVET. It is so gorgeous, I can just see the girls in handmade pinafores and skirts etc. I particularly love the top pattern. You are right in that you never find patterned velvet for sale any more and the quality of plain velvet nowadays is rubbish. Great op shop find.
I just love your planter and succulents. What a darling neighbour. Your planters are another thing you can’t buy any more. Such a classic style and quality we don’t see now.
I love how you and your lovely Mum share baked goods and other things. The scones look delicious and the ham will fill many meals.
All the puréed food for the little boys will fill them with goodness. You truly are a wonderful Mum and Grandma.
My weeks been full of decluttering- I’m being ruthless with my huge cupboard full of scrapbooking and card making supplies. It’s years overdue- I want to be able to open the doors and not feel overwhelmed. I have a friend who’s a kindy teacher and she’s happy to take ANYTHING. She can share it with other classes as there is so much to go round.
We’ve had the dreaded wave two of mice and rats Annabel. They decimated my tomatoes and capsicum and nibbled on my zucchini. I tell you I’m battling “The War of the Rodents” and sorry to say they’re winning. We were told by an old bushie that they won’t go until we have cold weather and a wet day after. It will kill them off. So I guess we must put up with them till winter.
The worst part of it all though is that they got into my food pantry in the house. Twice I thought we’d gotten rid of them but they came back. Just seeing one makes my skin crawl and I scream for Jeff so he’s dealt with them. Three we caught but it took three days. After bleaching and disinfecting there should be no germs around now. They got into the house via a gas pipe entry point by chewing the silicone blocking it up.
I’ve been cooking all our meals as usual and made a batch of tomato sauce using our own tomatoes but wasn’t happy with it. I think I overdosed on the oregano and it tastes quite bitter. No amount of sugar has helped the flavour.
I’d love to try your recipe now perhaps in a smaller quantity. The meatballs in the tomato sauce sounds delicious. Do you cook the meatballs then add to the sauce later Annabel? That will be a recipe I’ll cook this week.
We purchased 2 white melamine cupboards for my laundry/Jeff’s work shed this week. It’s to house all my kitchen overflow and pantry stockpile which have been sitting on open shelving, definitely not ideal during our rodent plague. I just walk in the door now and admire them. Everything is safe and will stay clean and organised.. it puts a smile on my face every time.
It certainly takes time to settle into a new home and work out what works best for us. Always trying to sort problems out with a fresh eye.
Lovely to catch up with everyone. So much busyness happening in our Bluebird nests.
Love and loads of hugs Annabel,

    1. Dear Lorraine,
Oh no! We lived through a mouse plague when I was in my teens. It was horrific! I hope this passes soon.
It is so nice you have a kindy teacher who will use your things for good. That is lovely.
I pan fry the meatballs (or you can oven cook) and when I think they are pretty much done I add them into my tomato sauce. My last lot was just tomatoes cooked down with some garlic and onion (dehydrated) added. If you have some you dont love still use it up by including it in with other cook ups.
Sorry for my slow reply! The week got away from me but it was a good one! With love, Annabel.xxx
