Feather your Nest Friday, 22nd January, 2021.

Reviewing the week is so good for me.  I just noticed that I did much more than I thought!  My list and photos remind me and I see it was good!   Otherwise I would have said the week was a bit of a blur!

I am sorry I didn't reply to everyone last week.  Normally I try to but the last few weeks of many extra things caught up with me.

Some of the ways I built up the home this week were:

I filled some spaces in the veggie garden with hay and mulch.

I made Apricot jam from some fruit I was given.  Also some stewed apricots which I just love.

Thinking in terms of making the most of things I made two large zucchini slices.   These used up twenty eggs and five zucchini!  One went to Chloe and Luke and fed them.

In the backyard I have two huge and lovely plant pots.   I planted them both with miniature apple trees.

I love adding something productive.

It was Mum's Birthday.  She had seen some fabric she really loved.  I was able to hunt down something nearly identical and made up two bags and then used the left overs for a pot holder.

In the op shop (thrift store) I found a few things to add to my sewing pantry.  Some pure wool yarn,  a woollen blanket that was a bit worn so I will use it to fill pot holders,  Ric Rac braid, some black cotton fabric and some lace.

Mum gave me meat for Scout and grain for the chickens.

It was also Lucy's birthday.   Mum and I had a lovely day visiting.   I made Lucy's favourite cake which is Armenian Nutmeg cake.

For Mum I made the same cake with Gluten Free Flour.  It made no difference at all so I will just make them all GF from now on.

Sidney is eating well now and so I turned one of my homegrown pumpkins into baby food.   Mum sat and shovelled it into his mouth.  He is like a little bird.
Good thing he liked it as I made twelve so Lucy could freeze them.

Now I am planning the next lot to have some beef broth as the base then the pumpkin cooked in that.     When Harper was a baby I worked out that if I filled my slow cooker with veggies and pureed them that this was $60 worth of baby food from the supermarket.   So it is probably more now.  However I think the real benefit is much more!
I hope I will be picking apples next week so I can do apple puree for us all and Sidney as well.

Another use it up project is my wash cloths/dish cloths.  I have made a lot now, all from my odd balls of cotton.   As I use up the cotton I will probably end up with some with stripes and contrasting edges to use up the little bits.

I will start making up my bundles of three next week.  I might make up some kind of little label to tie onto them.

Many of us are in lockdowns, quarantines and other worrying circumstances.   It has been a massive week.   When we get hit with what seems to be endless things it wears us down.  We had a run of things that really added up to a stressful time over the last weeks.  So I pray a lot! God is in control.  The Word of God doesn't change.  We need the full armour of God!   We need to keep our home as much of a sanctuary as we possibly can.   My bed is my sanctuary within the sanctuary!  Snuggled up in comfort with a cup of tea on my bedside table I read and write and restore.   Then you can think properly!   When you don't know what to do "do the next thing."   It adds up.  It really adds up!   We can't control the world but we can look well to the ways of our households!   So that is what we do...xxx

  1. Hi Annabel
I love apricot jam! Even in season they are expensive here unfortunately. What a lovely looking cake for Lucy. And such pretty bags for your mum. I hope they both enjoyed their birthdays. Lucy must really appreciate you bringing baby food, how nice to have some on hand.

I took four boxes of things to a new op shop this week and also have a bag of baby things to give to someone I know. I have to keep going with this as I’m feeling better for it. It’s much easier to organise spaces when they only contain things we really want.

I made a crochet baby hat for friends with a little girl and finished a cross stitch picture as well.

Apart from that there is always lots of cooking and baking in the holidays, I’ve been teaching my kids to use up things we have instead of going to the shops for things we don’t. We found a couple of good new recipes by doing this.

I hope this message works, I thought I’d sent one last week but it must have been lost.

    Have a lovely weekend!

    1. Dear Jen, Yes it worked! Thank you! I love apricot anything too. In the shops I have seen then $14 a kilo. So yikes and actually all fruit is like this. But these were free off someones tree. So I was very keen!
Yes being organised has a lot of benefits. You know what you have and what you do and dont need to look for too.
School holidays are almost over! I imagine you will be baking and getting ready. Harper starts reception and she is pretty excited! I will be making lunch box things too! With love Annabel.xxx

  3. Annabel, I love what you made from your "seashore" fabric and all the ways you thought to use up what you have on hand. I couldn't think of what to layer in my hot pads as insulation and guess what? I have scraps of wool that I will pull out. Usually I recycle ironing board cover (the insulated layer) for that but I am almost out. Thanks for that tip!
Lately I have saved seeds (flower and spinach) and bought red potatoes to plant within the next few weeks. We have oak tree leaves fallen all over so I'm raking those for the chicken pens, gardens and compost piles. Just trying to get a head start on spring. I am still using up our older canned goods to free up space and also to save time in the kitchen! Slowly I have built up my "food from storage" notebook so I have quite a few tried and true recipes now. If you have canned goods, especially meats, it can really cut down on cooking time.
Since our country has been in turmoil I have spent more time in prayer and reading my Bible. We have to remind ourselves that God has a plan and in the end everything will be okay. I have felt helpless at times, but I've decided one thing I can do is start some prayer walks locally. Around our county courthouse, schools and neighborhoods. I believe in the power of prayer where "two or more are gathered" and thankfully, I have like-minded friends so I know where to start. My break is over so I'd best get a move on. Have a great weekend, everyone.

    1. Dear Pam,
Wool is the most wonderful insulation. I can get nice wool blankets here and I wash those up and keep them but shabby ones I cut up. For inside out holders, even lining the ironing board they are fantastic.
I imagine you chickens having a lovely time scratching those oak leaves!
You are doing the best thing, busy at home and praying. This is what we need to be doing. And we are praying across the whole world too! With love Annabel.xxx

  4. Dear Annabel, thank you again for your encouragement. I copied many encouraging quotes on my document with my daily tasks and plans. So I get reminded each day. Today I copied the sentence with the bed :-) and: "When you don't know what to do "do the next thing." It adds up. It really adds up!" Oh yes, I really can confirm this. 1. Dear Cheesemouse (H) yes truly even when we can only do a few things at a time or a few minutes at a time it is amazing how this adds up. And we make a sanctuary and another sanctuary within it! This I think of as a bit like insulation from the world!

  9. I, too, love Apricot jam! Mmm-mmm. The pumpkin puree looks lovely - what a sweet picture (in my mind) of Sidney eating the food his Grammy made that his great-grammy was feeding him. Her bags are lovely!! So glad you could find the fabric like she liked :). Your crocheted cloths are really pretty, Annabel. They'll make welcome gifts.
Lucy's cake looks scrumptious and so does her daughter ;). What a pretty little apple tree and already with fruit! Wow.
I totally agree about having to lean on what God promises in His Word. I have to admit it's really been hard for me this week. I guess it shows me where I need to grow some more, sigh. Sometimes growing hurts ;p.

  10. Hi Annabelle, I look forward to your Friday post every week! Your Apricot jam looks delicious as does the Armenian Nutmeg cake. I will have to try to find the recipe and make it with gluten free flour also. I am sure your Mom appreciates your bags and pot holder and all you do for her. I looked at the pattern for your beautiful wash/dish cloths and decided it was too hard for me at this time so am still using my original easy one. Maybe some day will tackle it Your apples look beautiful. I am sure you probably have two different varieties and wondered what they were. They look like they are doing so well. Thanks for the encouragement to keep trusting God and do what we can. Nancy

One of the patters , Lilly of the Valley is just a row of single crochet then a row of two doubles then one single repeated. When you feel ready this is the easiest of the two.

  11. Dear Annabel,
I don’t get to post much (combined health issues and a goal of limiting my time online) mean that I can’t always comment, but I want you to know how inspirational your blog is to me, and what a good time I have reading all that you’ve done! Everything looks good, and that goat is so sweet! We downsized years ago from land, a kennel(breeding English Mastiffs, and also Jack Russells). We found that we downsized too much. I love our little house in a quiet little town, but there just isn’t enough garden. That doesn’t stop me from packing it with tree lillies, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, poppies, sweet peas, roses, lavender, a large selection of herbs, daisies, Mary bells, pelargoniums, clematis, and violas.
My days are spent decluttering, and planning our spring garden. I also am baking, making yoghurt, and knitting a gift for my daughter,.
Thank you so much for organizing this blog!

  13. Even on a slow day just doing one more thing can make a difference, be it putting something back where it belongs, wiping something down, sorting a few more items it helps with our surroundings and also keeps our spirits up.
I have been out early watering as the heatwave of the next few days will be hard on the garden. I have filled the bird bath too and will put out extra water later.
I have been going through my sewing and craft supplies and have decided to be realistic about what I have time to do and what I like to do. I am delivering some things to our local embroidery group today and then I will finish the sorting.

  17. Hi Annabel and everyone,

Annabel, your jam and cake and dishcloths are all beautiful! I love apricots, too.

It was a busy week at work and also in national events here. I got ahead by doing lots of cooking, and some baking for the freezer. One of these was a big pan of peanut butter bar cookies with chocolate chips. They are so good! We had a nice warm day on Wednesday so I threw all the windows open and aired out the house, and it was a good week to wash lots of linens. (I joke that washing things is my new hobby, but I do love it when everything is clean and fresh.) We have been eating from the pantry and freezer, though I will do a grocery pick up for some staples and to replace things we have used, in another week or so. I did add some fabric masks to our supply, and some in more neutral/masculine prints.

I knitted on some socks and started knitted a cowl for a gift, out of some of my stash yarn, and finished 1 small cross-stitch piece for our home. Really I have so appreciated my crafting supplies and good deals I found in the past! Your (and everyone else here!) example has been so wonderful and inspiring to me, and without doubt it has been helping us to stay well and get through this difficult time. There have been so many times I have been thankful for our food pantry, freezer, and medical/self care "pantry."

I hope everyone has a good weekend.

I love both being able to open up the house and have the breeze flow through and washing all the linens! The feeling of fresh everything is beautiful. When it is warm (like now) I usually wash the quilts, blankets, underlays... all the extras. The smell and feel of them after this is so nice. Sunshine and fresh... it is worth it and gorgeous.
Kathy the lockdowns etc made me realise how staying ahead and the crafts and supplies as well are really important. We could go on with so many projects and with pantry of everything needed that I know it made the times we had in quarantine etc much easier. A lot learned really from these experiences. Thank you for such a beautiful comment. With love Annabel.xxx

You could not buy that in the shops- it would not taste as good. The apricot jam looks delicious and what a wonderful present it would make. The colour is so pretty. I love how you planted the pots with something practical. I love the wash cloths. You get so much done. I have finished two wash cloths lol I cleaned the bathrooms, have done the washing, and dusted. 20. Dear Annabel,

It is so lovely to come and see what good you've done all week...it's always so encouraging and beautiful! You are getting into the busy season, now, as we are enjoying some "down" time here. I am happy to have some time to be crafting and working on inside house projects vs. being in the garden each day (though I love that when it's the season, too). I am finally feeling almost back to 100% after my surgery, so am able to really get to some things. This week I sewed a couple of headbands and scrunchies, knitted on a pair of mitts and a pair of gloves, embroidered another napkin, made a batch of cranberry/kiwi jam (delish!), painted a window frame (finally, after months of delay from my surgery), and cleaned up and cleared out a few areas. It has been lazily snowing the last couple of days, finally looking like Christmas, just a month late. :) I started a Christmas Challenge/Tuesday Afternoon Club with my Mom, who lives across country and is a little down in the dumps/no motivation because of Covid (and lack of seeing family, etc.), so I think this will be a fun little weekly check-in with each other and a kick in the behind for each of us!

Happy Birthday to your Mum and Lucy!

  22. I will save your photo as a reminder to me to use up my less-favorite fabric for shopping bags. And to look at the thrift store more often.
Also, I liked your idea of making pumpkin baby food. We are expecting a new grandbaby in July, so I will ask Mommy if she would like me to make some for them. If she says yes, we'll try to grow the appropriate variety of pumpkins and sweet potatoes. When our boys were babies, I had a grinder that strained out the fibers for littles ones and then had a screen that allowed more through for toddlers. I should try to find one for them. (thanks for the idea!)

  25. Hi Annabel

Belated Birthday wishes to both your Beautiful Mum and Lucy. Looks like your cakes were a hit. Last week was also my late brother's birthday so DD10 and I shared a cup cake an memories.

Loved the bag you made for your Mum, it is so beautiful.

Apricot jam, yum. My late Nan was our jam maker and I always looked forward to getting her jams. It was what my school lunches consisted of growing up....homemade jam sandwiches.

School went back here yesterday and after a bit of a house clean I have told DP that I am having today and tomorrow to myself as it was full on during the holidays with things to make and play everyday. I need time to just sit and do some things for me like crafting, diamond dotz and jigsaw puzzles just to slow my mind down a bit.

The last few days of holidays we spent baking things for the lunchbox so we have a few things that DD10 can rotate around. Love it as she can just go to the freezer and take out what she wants and pack her own lunch

Well I hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead.

    Take Care
